Cultural Heritage In Lucill Clifton s Study The Masters
What is cultural heritage and what is its significance today in our society? Cultural heritage is what we
call the legacy of physical science artifacts and intangible attributes of a group or society that are
inherited from past generations, maintained in the present and bestowed for the benefit of future
generations. Sometimes there are moments when we openly decide to ignore our cultural heritage and
focus on the other very worldly objects that surround our society. However, it s important to note that
many writers take time out of their day to write about their own cultural heritage instead of focusing
on other things. The Harlem Renaissance began somewhere in the 1920 s and brought forth livelihood
and amazing art along with incredible talent, this was known as the New Negro Movement , this all
took place in Harlem, New York. In the midst were three poets, Langston Hughes, ... Show more

For us, it is important for us to study those who have long gone because there may be something that
we can get out of it, hence bettering our understanding of what has long since past. In the poem she
talks about those who watch others and what can all be gained from doing so, in this one the narrator
describes how she watches her aunt as she does daily chores. This would be important because it s
good to know those people before we lose them. In the poem, Study the Masters , Lucille Clifton
describes, Study the masters like my Aunt Timmie (915). Clifton s narrator chose to study Aunt
Timmie for reasons of learning, because no one can really get anything out of cultural heritage unless
they re willing to take the time to learn. This however presents a sense of longing because times have
changed, which is why cultural heritage has become so important because everything is changing. As
a result we would long for whatever we no longer

Urban Poverty in China
Over the past two decades, China has experienced rapid economic growth, which has also brought
about a rise in social and economic inequality. A nation that once operated under the principle of
egalitarianism, China now struggles with a level of inequality that has surpassed most of its East Asia
neighbours. In the 1980 s, poverty was a problem restricted mainly to rural areas, but recently it has
forayed into urban areas as well. Since the mid 1990 s, urban poverty has grown at a very fast pace
under the influence of globalization (Fulong, Webster, and Yuting 5). The economic restructuring of
China is a huge contributor to this phenomenon. The Chinese government officially recognized urban
poverty as a problem in 2001 through a report ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The earliest of these attempts was by expanding higher education, which succeeded in matriculation,
but did not provide sufficient stimulus towards consumption as families opted to save for higher
education. The attempt to commercialize the housing market also ended up in a similar scenario, as
families opted to increase their savings in order to afford the higher prices charged for apartments
(Riskin and Qin 25). The urban poverty problem arises from the disparity between lack of income
growth and massive growth in social wealth (Fulong, Webster, and Yuting 37). In order to remedy this
problem, the government should not develop policies targeting only the poor; instead, it should ensure
that there exists a resource framework that is not only adequate for rich and middle class needs, but
one that is accessible to everyone. A strategic readjustment that ensures commensurate growth in both
social and economic wealth would be highly beneficial to the people (Wanlong and Wong 26). The
growth of incomes for residents should be strengthened and should also be accompanied by reforms in
state owned corporations.
One of the ways to remedy the consumption problem is through a rise in income levels and
implementation of reforms in monopolized state owned industries to bring about income
redistribution. Income redistribution is a government role that can be attained through proper fiscal
policies like tax reforms to ensure a balanced and fair

How Biobutanol Is More Feasible Alternative For Gasoline
Biobutanol is a more feasible alternative to gasoline. It is a more viable motor fuel substitute to
gasoline, as biomass from which biobutanol is derived from is readily available for production and
more importantly is a renewable resource. Gasoline is a crude oil product derived from petroleum,
which is finite and unsustainable as a motor fuel, because it is increasingly being used up faster than it
is being produced. It is expected that with continued research, biobutanol could eventually surpass
gasoline as the primary motor fuel. Evidence proves that biobutanol is more acceptable
environmentally than gasoline and conveniently, biomass is readily available for the steady production
of biobutanol. Biobutanol is more advantageous ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These factors would lead to biobutanol being considerably more efficient economically. In addition to
that, compared to gasoline or other motor fuel, (methanol, ethanol etc.) biobutanol has an increased
energy content and burning efficiency, which is advantageous as it can be useful for longer travels,
which would be beneficial economically speaking (Liu, Wang and Zhang, 2013). According to Table 1
below from The Promising Biofuel report, Butanol has few properties that give it an advantage over
gasoline. The octane number for butanol is higher than the octane number of gasoline. The octane
number of the fuel determines whether the fuel in the car is detonating instead of running smoothly
and having a high octane number is advantageous in the long run as there is significantly a lot less
energy wastage and the engine of the car will also last a lot longer as less damage is sustained
(Stevens, 2008). Butanol also has a much lower saturation pressure, meaning that butanol is likely to
have a significantly lower volatility. This is beneficial as gasoline with its high saturation pressure,
will easily evaporate rapidly at room temperature, whereas butanol with its lower saturation pressure
will be less inclined to. This idea is also supported by the evaporation heat of gasoline and butanol. It
is shown that more heat is required for the latter to substance to evaporate than the former. With all the
price advantages that

Neil Armstrong Epic Hero
Who was Neil Armstrong? Was he an astronaut? A war veteran? Or a chairman of the board for many
companies? He completed all of those careers throughout his lifetime. Armstrong was born in
Wapakoneta, Ohio on August 5, 1930. Like Homer s Odysseus, Neil was also a leader. An epic hero
possesses several character traits that make them who they are. Neil Armstrong embodies the
characteristics of an epic hero because he demonstrated humility, great strength and courage and
known as a national hero.
Neil demonstrated humility while serving his country in the military during the Korean War and the
first man on the moon as an astronaut. According to the text, He continued to serve as an adviser to the

NASA and first civilian ( Neil Armstrong ). Not only, did he serve his country in the military, but also
by assisting the U.S. in winning the Space Race against the Soviet Union. As a result, he received
three air medals for the Korean War and gained national recognition as the first man to step onto the

Finally, Neil Armstrong is known as a national hero. Armstrong along with two other astronauts,
Edwin Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins, landed their aircraft, the Apollo 11 successfully on the moon
after four days. They opened the hatch of the craft, Armstrong climbed down the ladder, and he says,
That s one small step for man, one giant step for mankind ( Neil Armstrong ). In spite of, the obstacles

What I Learned in the Women and Gender Studies Class
I have a very vivid memory of discussing my classes to my mother before this first semester began,
and whenever I listed off my Women and Gender Studies class I remember my mother asking me,
What do you think you are going to learn about in there? I recall opening my mouth to say something,
but nothing came out. I stopped, and looked at her and said, You know, I m not really sure. I guess we
will find out! I knew going in to this class I was excited, but for what I had no clue. However, looking
back on my experiences, discussions, and the knowledge I have gained from this course, I know
exactly why I was excited. There is an entire world out there that the media and politics had hidden
from me, but now my eyes are opened. I can ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The day I was hired a guy named Justin was also hired; he was manager within two months. Three
months after I was hired a guy named Tommy was hired; he was a manager within a month. I worked
there six months and never even got a single cent raise. I remember talking about becoming a manager
with our store owner (also a man) and he said, I promote people to managers who have mastered all
parts of the store, and who are good leaders. The guy Justin that I previously mentioned, couldn t even
make a pizza. Women were not hired or promoted into positions that required enforcement and
leadership, and this happening everywhere! Women can see that promotion, they can almost taste it,
but somehow the man always gets it. One of my favorite assignments throughout the course was the
midterm. I absolutely loved the documentary Half the Sky specifically because it truly opened your
eyes to so many transnational issues. Issues that were not isolated to a specific village or city, but
problems that were worldwide. The hardest part of the documentary for me to watch personally was
the sections discussing human trafficking. China, Cambodia, and Syria are just some of the countries
where sex/human trafficking is a predominant issue. People typically women are kidnapped, or sold
by their families and then sold to brothels to work as prostitutes. Other forms of human

Harry Potter And The Sorcerer s Stone By Severus Snape
The way we speak affects many aspects of our life. When it comes to being polite most people
struggle thinking about the right use of words and when is the correct moment to be courteous.
Managing polite speech is a basic need because it affect our interpersonal, laboral, and financial life.
Severus Snape is a character of the book serie Harry Potter Snape is rude and unfair with Harry from
book one to seven, however is in the first book Harry Potter and the Sorcerer s Stone where we can see
how Snape s behavior and often discouraging attitude and words towards Harry affect the way in
which his action are seen. In one of the scenes Harry is playing quidditch (magic game play in the

The way you treat others say a lot about you and if you are managing a business how you talk to
people can be fundamental. For instance, my friend went to a festival full of hispanic food, she didn t
knew what everything was, so when she start to get hungry she walked around looking for something
that catch her attention; and she found it but she didn t know what it was, she only knew that it looks
good so she asked the lady who was serving the food what was it and the women rudely answered her,
my friend was surprised by the women s manner and way in which she talk so even when she really
wanted to taste the food she walked away and didn t spend a cent in the restaurant. If the lady would
have been a little nicer my friend will have probably buy the food, the women didn t only lose money
but many clients because my friend told us what happened and we didn t want to buy anything there
anymore.
Sometimes being polite is not always the solution, some situations demand being hard on people, or
maybe we are just having a bad day and don t feel like being nice. Even when being rude or using
violence is easier than trying to get along with people the results of this actions are not often good.
People end up not listening to each other and getting offended, even when the words coming out of
their mouth aren t bad the tone they use only causes more problems.
In conclusion, politeness is good because

The Pros And Cons Of Ferrets
My ferrets dook, do the war dance, and skitter between my feet, and make my husband, kids, and I
smile. For my family, ferrets are excellent pets. My husband thinks they re better than dogs, and the
whole lot of us prefer ferrets to cats. Ferrets are very different from cats and dogs, however.Their
behavior, smell, motivations, and shape are all different from cats and dogs. They are classified as
exotic pets, and it is important that you consider the pros and cons of ferret parenthood before
adopting one of these wonderful weasels.
The differences between ferrets and other pets create the pros and cons of having a pet ferret
Intelligence: I hesitate to say that cats and dogs are smarter than ferrets, but I readily acknowledge that
ferrets have a significantly different kind of intelligence. Ferrets are pretty good problem solvers. As
an example, for Christmas one year, I put an apple in a stocking for my ferret. (The ferret liked to steal
apples and hide them. He didn t actually eat them.) The apple was just a tad smaller in diameter as the
stocking. Ernie put his head in the stocking, grabbed the apple, and pulled. It didn t work. After only
two tries he crawled out of the stocking and got on top of it. He pushed the apple out. ... Show more

your silverware. This tenacity makes it difficult to ferret proof and make your house safe for your

The War Of Vietnam And The Vietnam War
The war in Vietnam is The United States and other capitalist bloc countries supported South Vietnam
(Republic of Vietnam) against the support by the Soviet Union and other socialist bloc countries of
North Vietnam (Democratic Republic of Vietnam) and the Vietcong of war. Which occurred during the
Cold War of Vietnam (main battlefield), Laos, and Cambodia. This is the biggest and longtime war in
American history during the 1960s (Best 2008). It is also the most significant war after World War II.
However,The United States defeat in the Vietnam War. In Vietnam, the United States is not involved

Compare And Contrast Biological And Behavioural...
This essay will outline and compare both biological and behavioural perspectives on human
behaviour. The history, major discoveries and theories will be discussed along with some of the most
influential theorists in each of these two areas of psychology. This essay will also compare the two
areas strengths and weaknesses in the field of psychology.
Biological psychology is the study of how biology affects a number of psychological processes i.e.
how the mind affects the body (Schacter, Gilbert, Wegner Hood 2015). The study of the mind has had
many influential figures throughout history that often use each other s ideas as a stepping stone to
further advance psychology, some of the first being Plato and Aristotle. Plato believed in nativism and
theorised some skills and characteristics are innate and a person is born with them (Schacter et al,
2015). Aristotle, however, was in favour of philosophical empiricism i.e. that all knowledge is
acquired through experience, yet current scientists do not consider that nativism and empiricism are
entirely accurate (Schacter et al, 2015). Aristotle also believed that the brain existed to cool the blood,
as during that time people were sceptical that an organ could be responsible for behaviour (Kolb,
Whishaw Teskey 2016). The next major advancement in biological psychology was the introduction
of phrenology by Francis Gall, Gall s theory suggested that all psychological capabilities had a
specific place in the brain (Schacter et al, 2015). This theory later turned out to be correct, although
was overshadowed by Gall s insistence that he could state a person s character dependant on the size
of lumps and indentations on a person s skull, which he thought would represent the size of that brain
region beneath (Schacter et al, 2015). Due to this, in spite of a large following, phrenology was
quickly discredited. Biologist Pierre Flourens, unhappy with Gall s research, began removing
localized areas of the brain in various animals to observe their behaviour (Schacter et al, 2015).
Flourens then found that animal s movements differed to those with intact brains. This mirrored a
situation for surgeon Paul Broca with whom one of his patients had damage to the left side of

Rigor Murtis Research Paper
The Stiff Truth About Rigor Mortis Growing up, I have always been intrigued by murder mysteries.
My favorite shows consisted of Criminal Minds, CSI, and NCIS. From watching these shows episode
after episode, I have become familiarized with the term Rigor Mortis . Rigor Mortis is referred to as
the third stage of death, where the muscles in the body contract leaving the body stiff for a period of
time. Rigor Mortis occurs shortly after death, usually within three to four hours when the cells lose
their oxygen supply. In order for muscles to contract, ATP is required. After death, ATP is no longer
produced leaving the muscles tense. The process begins while a muscle is relaxed in its resting state.
In the resting state, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This causes the muscles to stiffen making the deceased body go into the Rigor Mortis stage due to the
accumulation of acid in the muscle tissue. Rigor Mortis hits its peak state about twelve hours after a
person s death and slowly decreases over the next forty eight to sixty hours. Although Rigor Mortis
may seem like a reliable source to use when predating a time of death, it is not. It is not ideal because
of the large spans of time it encompasses. The windows can vary by as much as 24 hours and there are
also several factors that can severely impact the onset and timeline of Rigor Mortis (Dillion, Death
and Kinetics. ). Other factors which can alter the reliability of prediction based on Rigor Mortis is if:
the deceased person had an illness, the temperature of the atmosphere in which the body was
discovered, what the person s activities were before death, and the conditions in which the body was
found. Due to the great list of factors that can modify the prediction of time of death using Rigor
Mortis, I do not think it is a reliable source for doctors, detectives, or scientists to predict a time of

Differences Between Christian Science And Science
Similarities and Differences
There are quite a few differences between Christian Science and Scientology. For instance, Christian
Science started in 1879. It was founded by a poor woman named Mary Baker Eddy who became rich
from her new founded religion. Scientology was founded in 1953. Unlike Christian Science,
Scientology is an independent religion. It was founded by a man named L. Ron Hubbard. Christian
Science is based off Christianity. It is a new interpretation of the Bible. Scientology is a religious
responds to therapeutic help. Christian Science centers on the idea of God. Scientology focuses on a
person in need of help. Christian Science sees God as the only creator. Scientology believes that the
creator is a person completely free. God has no importance in Scientology.
They have a few similaries that also differ. For example, both have churches. A Christian Science
church holds an hour long Sunday service. Just like traditional Christian services. They also have a
Wednesday testimony meeting. A church of Scientology is open and staffed every day of the week,
from morning until late at night. This way they can have auditing and training courses available. In the
auditing system, the auditor is one who is trained in Scientology methods. They listen to the learner
for the purpose of restoring his or her abilities and achieving full potential.
Both religions also offer a path to salvation. The differences between Scientology and Christian

The Student s Chair For An Adult
The students desks were rearranged because the students would run into each other and bump into
each other with their chairs. There was not enough space between the student s chair for an adult to
walk through. Turning those five groups into U shape gives the teacher an opportunity to address
every child s work in one place instead of bumping into another child for space. I gave extra space in
between the groups for more clear traffic patterns for the children to walk to the carpet, their cubbies,
or other areas of the room. After arranging them like this there is even more space in the classroom
which hopefully prevents chaos. Another area I modified in this classroom is the Cubby Area. The
cubbies in my CT s class are in an L shape against the far left corner. Every morning and afternoon the
children and pushing and bumping into each other. By putting them straight and against the left wall
gives the children more space to gather or put up their belongings in turn makes it safer. There is a
large, clear walkway to the cubbies for the students and plenty of space to line up in front of the
classroom door. In the top left corner is the new reading area. It has a bookcase that is easily
accessible to the students along with two bean bags for the children to sit on while reading. This area
contributes to their gross and fine motor skills because the children can sit while reading a book of
their choice. The bookcase has books ranging from a level 10 to a

Reflective statement. During our discussion, many aspects of Agilulf s personality were brought up.
This caused me to think more deeply on his character. The things I realized made me compare him to
myself and I drew several comparisons between his behavior and my generalized anxiety. He seemed
to have a more defined anxiety though, which I soon concluded was most likely social anxiety due to
his problems communicating. Title: Depression and anxiety in Italo Calvino s The Nonexistent Knight
In Italo Calvino s The Nonexistent Knight the main character, Agilulf, is a disembodied knight in
Charlemagne s army who is often at odds with his fellow knights due to his perfectionism. At the

His dificulties seem to stem from his self conciousness about his lack of a corporeal body, which
many knights often bring up in attempts to discredit him and when joking about him. Selfconciousnes
often coincides with social anxiety, either being the cause of the anxiety or the result. He also seems to
be more confident in himself before Charlemagne cuts him off for his name being too long winded
and tells him that he will never remember it. This could be the incident that set off Agilulf s anxiety
and depression, along with his unwillingness to start conversations. Often times sufferers of social
anxiety have a defining moment in their childhoods or adolescence which shuts them off from the
world, making them distrusting of others and unable to confidently speak with others, although this is
not always the case. While this may not be the cause of Agilulf s inability to communicate, it could
certainly be an important

Internal Conflicts in Master Harold... and the Boys by...
Most people cannot see reality as it truly is from their eyes. In Athol Fugard s Master Harold... and the

people wanted to end apartheid, other people who lived with apartheid for their whole lives do not see
the wrongs with it. These people want change, but do not know that they are the issue which is known
as a psychological barrier. In the play, Athol Fugard uses Willie who struggles with a psychological

Designing A Business Plan For A Future Bed And Breakfast
I am in the process of designing a business plan for a future bed and breakfast that I would like to
open in a couple of years. I would like to purchase some land outside of Austin, TX in order to build
this bed and breakfast. I plan on starting this company with a partner, my younger sister, Mercy. We
want to know if we should start a general partnership, with both of us as a general partner, or a limited
partnership, with me as the general partner and Mercy as the limited partner.
In addition to the type of partnership we are considering establishing, we have already decided that we
will be using the entity theory of partnerships, which regards partnerships as a distinct and separate
entity from either of us, the partners. As such, both Mercy and I will be able to enter into taxable
transactions with the partnership. And this means that the partnership can hold the title to the land, is
not legally liable for our (the partners) debts, and is required to file annual returns using the Form
1065 reporting operation results.
Our main question is that we would like to know what type of debt we should take out in order to
establish this partnership and be able to finance the land in which to build the bed and breakfast. We
want to know, and understand, the difference between recourse debt and non recourse debt and how it
pertains to a partnership as well as to the individual partners. We would also like to know which of
these two types would be the best type of debt to incur

The History of Prison Reform
The History of Prison Reform
Introduction
The evolution of prison reform is a reflection of society s changing attitudes toward crime and
punishment. Prisons have progressed from simple places for incarceration where the primary purpose
is to protect the public to instruments of punishment where the loss of freedom is penalty for breaking
the law, to institutions for reform dedicated to mould the guilty to conform to society s norms. Prisons
were among the first public buildings erected in the New World. The city of Boston felt the need of a
house of detention when the town consisted of a mere forty homes. Early American prisons were not
conceived as houses of punishment. In English and American law, political prisoners and high ranking
prisoners of war were occasionally incarcerated, but few common criminals could expect such
treatment. Almost the only time commoners were locked away was while awaiting trial, once a verdict
was delivered, they were punished on the spot or released (Lynch, 2011). The eighteenth century
transformed not only the physical form of prisons but their function and their place in American
consciousness.
Discussion
Initially imprisonment was a means of detaining debtors to ensure payment, the accused before trial,
or the guilty before punishment. Courts imposed sentences including fines, personal mutilation such as
flogging or branding, or death (Johnson, 2011).
The only offense for which long term imprisonment was common was debt, though

Why Is Canada A Mixed Economy
The United States debt is over thirty times higher than that of Canada, which may be explained by the
fact that the two countries have different types of economies. Currently, the United States economy is
what s known as a market economy, whereas Canada s is a mixed. Throughout the history of these two
countries, there have been many ups and downs, however the United States debt is currently rising at a
very high and constant rate. Many countries all over the world are currently using a mixed economy
and there is many obvious reasons why. For each economy type there are many pros and cons, but the
two economies are very different. In the long run, a market economy is inferior to a mixed due to the
fact that it is not consistent, everyone is not balanced, and there are minimal government regulations.

Since this economy is based on the individualism of companies, usually one area of a state or country
is dominant in one specific industry. If the price drops in something like oil, any area that produces a

whole country into a recession. A good example of this happening was the stock market crash of 1987,
also known as black monday . On October 19, a large number of sell orders triggered a domino effect
that scared many investors into creating more sell orders. In the unbelievably short time of 24 hours,

David by Donatello and Michelangelo
When thinking about a triumph over an unimaginable feat, the story of David and Goliath comes to
mind. During the Italian Renaissance, Florence was under constant change and turmoil however David
remained a consistent symbol of endless possibilities for the people. For the Florentines, David
represented the essence of civic virtue courage, fortitude, and faith (Murray, 39). Various artists have
revealed their own depictions of the young shepherd boy but two stand out among the masses.
Donatello and Michelangelo both created masterpieces on the biblical subject although the approaches
of each artist were completely diverse and caused unique reactions.

Each David was sculpted in the naturalistic image that their creator envisioned. They also share the
commonality of association with the Medici family, a very powerful group of people that loved the
arts and was said to have commissioned Donatello for the David sculpture. Later on they became too
powerful and the republic forced them out of control, resulting in the creation of another David as a
celebration of their triumph. The earlier David stood in the courtyard of the Palazzo della Signoria,
which also happened to be the very place that Michelangelo s piece was displayed upon completion.
Despite the fact that the David s share time periods, political meanings, and origins, the two sculptures
look completely different and evoke very different emotions. Perhaps the most significant difference is
found in the choices made by the artists to place their sculpture before or after the battle against
Goliath. Donatello s David is portrayed following the victory against the feared adversary. He is full
of glory and stands on the head Goliath with his oversized sword clutched in his small hands.
Michelangelo takes a different perspective and depicts David in the moment before battle with nothing
but his sling in hand. This creates more of a feeling of anticipation and strength of courage. The
determination in Michelangelo s sculpture s face is very apparent where Donatello creates a face that
is calm and victorious.

Legislative Framework Regarding Disclosures Practices
LEGISLATIVE FRAMEWORK REGARDING DISCLOSURES PRACTICES IN INDIA
The essential mechanism of the legal framework which governs the performance and functioning of
listed companies in any country is the laws and regulations determining the quantity and quality of
corporate disclosures. The core of governance is transparency, disclosure, accountability and integrity.
Disclosures are very necessary for transparency and accountability of listed companies; these are by
no means sufficient to ensure either of them.
The main concern for disclosure regulations lies behind the basic question of why disclosures need to
be regulated in the first place, and why not instead firms be allowed to voluntarily optimize the quality
and quantity of disclosed information in response to market forces.
There are basically two types of disclosures which are; Voluntary disclosure and required disclosure.
Voluntary disclosures are those disclosures that are left to the discretion of the company and the level
of which is determined by the management or shareholders by balancing at the margin level costs and
benefits of disclosures. Disclosures that are required, in contrast, the ones that are mandated by laws
and regulations because these are the ones that a company would otherwise not volunteer to provide.
In India, the laws legal framework regarding corporate governance is generally supervised by SEBI
guidelines and Companies Act, 2013, however they are not limited to only SEBI guidelines and

Types Of Instructional Tools
In this weeks resources, we looked at types of instructional tools that can aid in the learning process,
the pros and cons of each type, and examples of each as well. We looked at ways to incorporate each
into our classrooms to enhance the learning process. Our scriptures for this week instructed us to
always have faith in God even in hard times and to follow through with our promises. Instructional
tools are a crucial in aiding in the learning process.

tool in STEM disciplines as teachers prepare the 21st century learner. According to this article given
emerging research on how videogames and associated pedagogies work in designed settings, it seem
that the important questions is not can games be used to support learning but how can they support

Vertical Datum
A surface or level which is regarded as a base from which other levels can be counted. For example,
sea level is often used as a datum level against which the height of land and depth of the sea bed are
measured. A geodetic datum is an abstract coordinate system with a reference surface (such as sea
level) that serves to provide known locations to begin surveys and create maps. In this way, datum act
similar to starting points when you give someone directions. For instance, when you want to tell
someone how to get to your house, you give them a starting point that they know, like a crossroads or
a building address. Geodesists and surveyors use datum to create starting or reference points for
floodplain maps, property boundaries, construction surveys, levee design, or other work requiring
accurate coordinates that are consistent with one another. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Horizontal datum measure positions (latitude and longitude) on the surface of the Earth, while vertical
datum are used to measure land elevations and water depths. The horizontal datum can be accessed
and used through a collection of specific points on the Earth whose latitude and longitude have been
accurately determined by NOAA s National Geodetic Survey. One application of the horizontal datum
is monitoring the movement of the Earth s crust. This type of monitoring is often used in places like
the San Andreas Fault in California where many earthquakes occur. The vertical datum is similarly
realized through a collection of specific points on the Earth with known heights either above or below
a nationally defined reference surface (e.g., mean sea level). Geodetic vertical datum are generally
used to express land elevations. However, water level datum are a slightly different vertical datum,
and are used as a reference level to which bathymetric soundings are referenced for nautical charts.
Conversion between these two can be done through geodetic surveys at tide

Theme Of Loss Of Innocence In Frankenstein
As people gain new experiences different losses of innocence come along with that, this is shown in
Mary Shelley s Frankenstein. Throughout the book innocence plays a big role in the characterization
of Frankenstein, the monster and most of the other characters in the book. But, as tragedies in the book
occur they also symbolize losses of innocence in both the monster and Frankenstein. As these losses of
innocence occur the reader begins to realize that each of them also seems to symbolize another loss of
innocence but one that is just under the surface of literal meanings. One of the common double losses
of innocence is all of the deaths that occur in the book. While examining the characterization and the
deaths of Elizabeth and Justine, the reader comes to realize that all of those deaths symbolize the loss
of innocence. Through these deaths, it is shown that Frankenstein and the monster continued to lose
their innocence until it is nonexistent. All throughout Justine s imprisonment and death, Shelley plays
with the idea of innocence versus guilt. When William is killed Justine who is portrayed as an
innocent bystander is convicted of the crime. When she is arrested everyone is confused because no
one believes that she could have done this. This is because everyone sees her as cute and innocent.
Who is safe , if she is to be convicted of crime? I rely on her innocence as certainly as i do upon my
own (81). Even most of the characters believe that she is innocent but,

: Don Lazaro, you ve got five boys in Comitan teaching the campesinos how to read. That s
subversive. That s communist. So tonight, you have to kill them. Don Lazaro, the mayor of the war
torn village, San Martin Comitan, seems to have no choice but to carry out this heartless command.
His response is indicative of a desperate man searching for answers, yet already resigned to carrying
out the task at hand. What can I say? you tell me! cries an anguished Don Lazaro to the villagers. Is he

The feeling of fear and sadness is further portrayed by the crying of the village women, . . . a woman s
anguish pierced the still, early morning, followed by yet a duet of wails, and then a full chorus of
cries. Clearly, these women intuitively or otherwise , know of wrenching torment awaiting the village.
The somber mood continues with the procession of religious officials making their way to the same
destination as the wailing women. In contrast, however, the religious principales have assumed a
formation of some sort; marching in six files, two abreast, ceremoniously fulfilling their obligation as
if all hope had already eroded.
That hope further dissipated when the young men, now being led each by an older man, made their
way to the cemetery. The cemetery was an eery prediction of what was surely now about to happen.
Don Lazaro has protested so much that there is nothing he can do, it now borders on the pathetic. Does
he know of some additional harm that would befall him if he doesn t carry out this sinister plan? The
young men, now willing to sacrifice their lives, and resigned to doing so, bravely meet their fate. The
five young men, each escorted now by an older man, followed the cofrades over the ridge of the hill
and dropped down on the other side just out of sight. Certainly the reader can see that, with the
movement of the young men out of sight, the terrible command is surely about to be carried out. Still

The Pain Of Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain
A study from the Pain Journal found that chronic musculoskeletal pain was more common than
chronic neuropathic pain, however, neuropathic pain was found to be more severe and debilitating.
Studies show that approximately 65% 85% of individuals with spinal cord injuries suffer from chronic
pain. Many patients with spinal cord injuries will develop severe/excruciating neuropathic pain below
the level of their injury. (Siddall et all, 2003). United States SCI veterans are susceptible to chronic
neuropathic pain due to a wide range of contributing factors that include trauma, post traumatic stress
disorder, surgery, anesthesia, prolonged immobilization, depression and anxiety, and mental illness or
a combination of any aforementioned. Many of our SCI patients are on heavy pain medications that
limit them from activities of daily living and affect their ability to participate in scheduled therapies in
the hospital. For example, when our patients are on opioid medications, they are unable to drive which
directly affects their ability to function normally in society. Additionally, these medications can lead to
patients unwilling to leave the house or hospital because it will interfere with their regular drug
administration times. In both of these instances, the patient s day becomes dependent upon drug
administration.

Doctrine of Double Effect
Trident University
What is the Doctrine of Double Effect?
The doctrine of double effect if often invoked to explain the permissibility of an action that causes a
serious harm, such as the death of a human being, as a side effect of promoting good ends. It is
claimed that sometimes it is permissible to cause such harm as a side effect of bringing about a good
result even though it would not be permissible to cause such harm as a means to bringing about the
same good end. The reasoning is summarized with the claim that sometimes it is permissible to bring
about as merely foreseen side effect a harmful event that it would be impermissible to bring about

* The action must be appropriate (a): I also have to give the patient the right medicine. If I give the

appropriate (b): I also have to give the patient the right medicine for their symptoms. If I give the
patient a fatal dose of pain killing drugs, it is no use saying that my intention was to relieve their
symptoms of pain if the patient was not suffering from pain but from breathlessness. * The patient
must be in a terminal condition: if I give the patient a fatal dose of pain killing drugs and they would

Scanlon s View on the Doctrine of Double Effect Scanlon explores the ethical significance of the
intentions and motives with which people act. According to Scanlon, these intentions and motives do

bathroom and can create the illusion of more room. Instead of hanging a tiny mirror above the sink,
use multiple mirrors or cover one whole wall with an oversized one. A full length mirror against the
wall reflects lots of light and will add depth to a narrow bathroom.
Open Shelves Mean More Moving Space
If you absolutely rely on drawers to hide your clutter, consider a floating vanity without legs. These
attach to the wall and keep your floors clear, which can make the room look and feel more spacious.
While cabinets and vanities are must haves in small spaces with little storage, they physically and
visually take up space. Open shelves allow the eye to travel from wall to wall, making the room look
larger. They also force you to be more selective with what you keep in the bathroom, which makes the
space tidier.

Animal Experimentation Should Be Banned
The greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated. Mahatma Gandhi. These
famous words still ring true in today s society as we struggle to overcome the scientific
experimentation on animals. Animals have acted as the archstone of human civilization since the dawn
of man, from a source of food, to companionship. However, in the past century, we have been blurring
the line between environmental entitlement and environmental rape. Every member of the human race
interacts and depends on animals, and we owe them a certain level of respect in our society. Animal
Experimentation should be banned in all forms within the borders of the United States; prohibited
under an expansion of the Animal Welfare Act. This paper will explore the problems, causes and
solutions pertaining to animal experimentation. This is a relevant issue in the United States, where
animals are inhumanely used for experimentation in both medical and cosmetic industries. The
cosmetic industry puts defenseless animal through painful experiments for the luxury of their
products. The Indian Journal of Pharmacology states that: In the USA millions of animals were used in
procedures that caused more than momentary pain or pain/distress, while 84,000 were used in studies

The Effects Of Toys And Media On Children
From this lesson, I would like to learn the degree of effects toys and media can have on children. I was
not very aware of the different effects Disney can have on children, but I have always known that
educational games are better. I am also able to identify the effects active or violent toys can have on
boys, and from this lesson, I became more aware of the different side effects on girls. For example,
when little girls collect Barbie dolls, movies and other toys related to Disney, they have a possibility
not to accept their bodies when they become teenagers. It also helps me realize that everyone around
me including myself is or was influence by the media. However, the outcomes can be different
depending on how people manage media. It was interesting to realize how people become influenced
by media. At first, the parents, including myself, buy toys to create an environment for children to
move, interact and learn independently. As they grow older, the independence they developed as
children will allow them to choose their own toys. Parents can be proud looking at their little children
becoming independent not only at home but also in the market place. For parents that need to deal
with Barbies or violent toys for boys, little do they know of what can develop behind their admiration.
Once children develop an identity towards Disney anything their parents buy them will not be good
enough and be old fashioned to them. Also, parents start feeling left out. For example, they

Undeniably, there is an absolute necessity of mutual understanding between all pilots and controllers.
Perhaps the International Civil Aviation Organization s standardization of the English language in

Although English may have been the standard language permeating throughout the skies, the flaws of

s Hymn to U.S. Imperialism ). This quote means it is believed that the white man s burden or
responsibility is to imperialize, civilize, and Christianize these other nations. For instance, African
American were seen as the unfit and they needed to be civilized. Racism is when races are considered
inferior to another race because of assumptions made. When you consider another race unfit, you are
basing it off your own culture s differences therefore creating racism (Rashid, Aatif). Furthermore
inequality is caused by those superior nations . These superior nations put themselves on a high
pedestal resulting in the belief they are better than anyone else. Ethnocentrism is cause by imperialism
and can sometimes be the motivation behind imperialism. Inequality is then an effect of those nations
or races that believe they are better than

My Favorite Experience In My Life
Pass. Set. Spike. Serve. Dig. I have heard these words surround me since I was young. Sports have
played an important part of my life since I was young taking a parent and me swim classes at the local
YMCA. I was that kid who played almost every sport out there, from karate to soccer to basketball.
Even after all that, it still took me still took me years to find my true passion as far as sports go.
Both of my parents played volleyball growing up so it has always been in my life one way or another.
My two brothers couldn t care less about it, rather spending their days playing soccer and video
games.
All of a sudden, the first day of school, middle school, rolled around. My school offered a sports
program, so without hesitation, I had decided to sign up for volleyball because I wanted to try
something new and try to find an activity that would keep me happy and busy. Sixth grade flew by and
seventh soon came. As per the one year tradition, I signed up to play volleyball. This year, I played on
my school s varsity team.
Seventh grade was the year I tried out for club volleyball. My first year of club volleyball is where I
had some of the best and worst experiences of my life. My teammates are some of my best friends,
who I have known from previous sports our parents made us suffer through. This team also happens to
be one of the worst in the league, taking second to last place in the league. We lose every tournament,
much less every game. And everyone likes to win,

Mccubbin Case
1. Employee or independent contractor.
The most important factor in determining an independent contractor versus employee status of a
worker is the amount of control the employer has over the workers in performing a particular task.
McCubbin by through McCubbin v. Walker, 256 Kan. 276, 281, 866 P.2d 790 (1994). There must be a
contract between the person wanting work done and the person doing the work in order to establish
either an employer employee relationship or an independent contractor relationship. Id at 282, 866
P.2d at 795.
An independent contractor is defined as someone who is contracted to perform a job. The person
whom is performing the job will perform by their own means and on their own time, as long as it falls

For starters, George had control over the scheduling of employees, the way the workers dressed, the
payment, and the procedure of selling peanuts. Even if George did not explicitly use this right (like
with the scheduling system used) he still had the right to use that control (when he scheduled people to
work games they did not sign up for. There is no formal training for the employees. However, the
worksheet and discussions with George if a particular vendor is struggling can be seen as a form of
training for employees in order to up their sales. This leads into another factor with how the worker s
services tied into the business. The Vending Company s business is to be a food and drink vendor for
all of the BeanBalls baseball games. Kary along with the other employees played an integral part of
the Vending Company s business since they were the people actually selling the products at the game.
Kary personally provided the services to the Vending Company, there was no person hired by Kary as
a third party to do her job. The fact that Kary was paid by the hour and not by the game is indicative
of a continuing relationship between The Vending Company and Kary. George had set work hours for
his employees, since they could only work during the games plus the additional hour before that is
required to get all of the equipment and peanuts ready to sell. There was a specific procedure to how
the employees were supposed to go about their work for that day. The employees will first show up
and pick up their carrier. From that point, the employee will go and scoop/bag the peanuts they are
going to sell. At the end of the game there is a final tally of how many bags were sold, and whoever
sold the most would receive a 20 dollar bonus. The employees must wear uniforms, though they can
embellish it as they please, and they must wear black shoes. George

The Excitement of Gaming Turned into an Addiction
Change is the alteration which results in an important shift in the way we perceive and interact with
the world. It is the process of being reformed in appearance or turned into something or someone new.
The concept of change is very significant as it gives us new experiences whether positive or negative.
Being the best student was something I never had to worry or wish for due to my devotions towards
studies. It was the third time I got awarded as one of the best students in high school. My dad bought
me a brand new play station 3 as a gift of acknowledgment towards my good performance in school.
Video game became one of my favorite hobbies. I developed the interest in gaming and spent most of
my time on it. It taught me some driving ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They acclaimed me over my sisters which encouraged me to stick to this practice. My parents decided
to give me some opportunities to acknowledge my conduct, My room looked cleaned. Now was the
time to invite friends over to my house. My parents never wanted me to invite any friend to the house
because of how miserable the house always looked like. During my week of change, I was giving the
opportunity to invite friends over if I wish. On the 4th day, I invited my two best friends: Williams and
mike. For the past 2 week, we never heard from each other and never got worried about contacting.
Mike and William came over to my house and we all went to the recreational center to have fun. We
did a lot of exercise and played basketball. Since the day 4, we took it a practice to always visit the
recreational center. This also promoted my health and built my friendship.
As I carried on with the change, I never taught much about video games. I found more interest in
hanging out with my family all the time. I used to go to the cinema every Saturday with my family
until I had my play station. My family will go to the cinema whilst I also spend time with my play
station. On Saturday, the 7th day, I felt very bored and had no option than to join my family to the
cinema. That night was fun as I realized the ecstasy in hanging out with family.
My week of change impacted me academically because I devoted more time towards studies without

The Contribution Of David Hunter Hubel
Introduction In 1981, D.H Hubel and T.N Wiesel were awarded half of the Nobel prize in Physiology
or Medicine, along with R.W. Sperry who received the other half. The two had been conducting
experiments and publishing their findings together for over twenty years, before they were awarded
the Nobel prize for their discoveries concerning information processing in the visual system. They
produced many reports including single and complex cells, and ocular dominance. Their work
provided better understanding of the visual system and therefore led the way for others to develop
knowledge and treatment of eye conditions. Their discovery also helped other scientists to conduct
and publish work of their own.
Background
David Hunter Hubel was a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Their experiments took place on anaesthetized cats with microelectrodes inserted into their primary
visual cortex, their eyes were also held open allowing the experiment to be conducted. Small spots of
light were shone onto the restricted retinal regions which often would cause brisk responses and could
be divided into excitatory and inhibitory regions (shown in fig.1). Excitatory areas if illuminated
produced an increased frequency of firing compared to inhibitory regions, although both did produce
responses. Stationary spots showed that the excitatory and inhibitory regions were aligned side by side
within the central responsive area, flanked by antagonistic areas. Light stimulus covering the whole
receptive field was practically ineffective in most units due to mutual antagonism between excitatory
and inhibitory regions, shown in figure 1 (f).
A vertical slit of light was projected, which only covered the excitatory areas and avoided all
inhibitory areas, however when turned horizontally, it touched inhibitory areas and responses were
dramatically reduced or lost completely. This was due to the stimulation of excitatory areas being
smaller than the antagonistic areas that were stimulated and thus responses shielded. The excitatory
and inhibitory areas had similar shape and positioning and responded in the same way to directional
movement (Hubel and Wiesel, 1959).

  • 2. Cultural Heritage In Lucill Clifton s Study The Masters What is cultural heritage and what is its significance today in our society? Cultural heritage is what we call the legacy of physical science artifacts and intangible attributes of a group or society that are inherited from past generations, maintained in the present and bestowed for the benefit of future generations. Sometimes there are moments when we openly decide to ignore our cultural heritage and focus on the other very worldly objects that surround our society. However, it s important to note that many writers take time out of their day to write about their own cultural heritage instead of focusing on other things. The Harlem Renaissance began somewhere in the 1920 s and brought forth livelihood and amazing art along with incredible talent, this was known as the New Negro Movement , this all took place in Harlem, New York. In the midst were three poets, Langston Hughes, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This would be important because it s good to know those people before we lose them. In the poem, Study the Masters , Lucille Clifton describes, Study the masters like my Aunt Timmie (915). Clifton s narrator chose to study Aunt Timmie for reasons of learning, because no one can really get anything out of cultural heritage unless they re willing to take the time to learn. This however presents a sense of longing because times have changed, which is why cultural heritage has become so important because everything is changing. • 3. Urban Poverty in China Over the past two decades, China has experienced rapid economic growth, which has also brought about a rise in social and economic inequality. A nation that once operated under the principle of egalitarianism, China now struggles with a level of inequality that has surpassed most of its East Asia neighbours. In the 1980 s, poverty was a problem restricted mainly to rural areas, but recently it has forayed into urban areas as well. Since the mid 1990 s, urban poverty has grown at a very fast pace under the influence of globalization (Fulong, Webster, and Yuting 5). The economic restructuring of China is a huge contributor to this phenomenon. The Chinese government officially recognized urban poverty as a problem in 2001 through a report ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The earliest of these attempts was by expanding higher education, which succeeded in matriculation, but did not provide sufficient stimulus towards consumption as families opted to save for higher education. The attempt to commercialize the housing market also ended up in a similar scenario, as families opted to increase their savings in order to afford the higher prices charged for apartments (Riskin and Qin 25). The urban poverty problem arises from the disparity between lack of income growth and massive growth in social wealth (Fulong, Webster, and Yuting 37). In order to remedy this problem, the government should not develop policies targeting only the poor; instead, it should ensure that there exists a resource framework that is not only adequate for rich and middle class needs, but one that is accessible to everyone. A strategic readjustment that ensures commensurate growth in both social and economic wealth would be highly beneficial to the people (Wanlong and Wong 26). The growth of incomes for residents should be strengthened and should also be accompanied by reforms in state owned corporations. One of the ways to remedy the consumption problem is through a rise in income levels and implementation of reforms in monopolized state owned industries to bring about income redistribution. Income redistribution is a government role that can be attained through proper fiscal policies like tax reforms to ensure a balanced and fair ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. How Biobutanol Is More Feasible Alternative For Gasoline Biobutanol is a more feasible alternative to gasoline. It is a more viable motor fuel substitute to gasoline, as biomass from which biobutanol is derived from is readily available for production and more importantly is a renewable resource. Gasoline is a crude oil product derived from petroleum, which is finite and unsustainable as a motor fuel, because it is increasingly being used up faster than it is being produced. It is expected that with continued research, biobutanol could eventually surpass gasoline as the primary motor fuel. Evidence proves that biobutanol is more acceptable environmentally than gasoline and conveniently, biomass is readily available for the steady production of biobutanol. Biobutanol is more advantageous ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These factors would lead to biobutanol being considerably more efficient economically. In addition to that, compared to gasoline or other motor fuel, (methanol, ethanol etc.) biobutanol has an increased energy content and burning efficiency, which is advantageous as it can be useful for longer travels, which would be beneficial economically speaking (Liu, Wang and Zhang, 2013). According to Table 1 below from The Promising Biofuel report, Butanol has few properties that give it an advantage over gasoline. The octane number for butanol is higher than the octane number of gasoline. The octane number of the fuel determines whether the fuel in the car is detonating instead of running smoothly and having a high octane number is advantageous in the long run as there is significantly a lot less energy wastage and the engine of the car will also last a lot longer as less damage is sustained (Stevens, 2008). Butanol also has a much lower saturation pressure, meaning that butanol is likely to have a significantly lower volatility. This is beneficial as gasoline with its high saturation pressure, will easily evaporate rapidly at room temperature, whereas butanol with its lower saturation pressure will be less inclined to. This idea is also supported by the evaporation heat of gasoline and butanol. It is shown that more heat is required for the latter to substance to evaporate than the former. With all the price advantages that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. Compare And Contrast Biological And Behavioural... This essay will outline and compare both biological and behavioural perspectives on human behaviour. The history, major discoveries and theories will be discussed along with some of the most influential theorists in each of these two areas of psychology. This essay will also compare the two areas strengths and weaknesses in the field of psychology. Biological psychology is the study of how biology affects a number of psychological processes i.e. how the mind affects the body (Schacter, Gilbert, Wegner Hood 2015). The study of the mind has had many influential figures throughout history that often use each other s ideas as a stepping stone to further advance psychology, some of the first being Plato and Aristotle. Plato believed in nativism and theorised some skills and characteristics are innate and a person is born with them (Schacter et al, 2015). Aristotle, however, was in favour of philosophical empiricism i.e. that all knowledge is acquired through experience, yet current scientists do not consider that nativism and empiricism are entirely accurate (Schacter et al, 2015). Aristotle also believed that the brain existed to cool the blood, as during that time people were sceptical that an organ could be responsible for behaviour (Kolb, Whishaw Teskey 2016). The next major advancement in biological psychology was the introduction of phrenology by Francis Gall, Gall s theory suggested that all psychological capabilities had a specific place in the brain (Schacter et al, 2015). This theory later turned out to be correct, although was overshadowed by Gall s insistence that he could state a person s character dependant on the size of lumps and indentations on a person s skull, which he thought would represent the size of that brain region beneath (Schacter et al, 2015). Due to this, in spite of a large following, phrenology was quickly discredited. Biologist Pierre Flourens, unhappy with Gall s research, began removing localized areas of the brain in various animals to observe their behaviour (Schacter et al, 2015). Flourens then found that animal s movements differed to those with intact brains. This mirrored a situation for surgeon Paul Broca with whom one of his patients had damage to the left side of ... From watching these shows episode after episode, I have become familiarized with the term Rigor Mortis . Rigor Mortis is referred to as the third stage of death, where the muscles in the body contract leaving the body stiff for a period of time. Rigor Mortis occurs shortly after death, usually within three to four hours when the cells lose their oxygen supply. In order for muscles to contract, ATP is required. After death, ATP is no longer produced leaving the muscles tense. The process begins while a muscle is relaxed in its resting state. In the resting state, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This causes the muscles to stiffen making the deceased body go into the Rigor Mortis stage due to the accumulation of acid in the muscle tissue. Rigor Mortis hits its peak state about twelve hours after a person s death and slowly decreases over the next forty eight to sixty hours. Although Rigor Mortis may seem like a reliable source to use when predating a time of death, it is not. It is not ideal because of the large spans of time it encompasses. The windows can vary by as much as 24 hours and there are also several factors that can severely impact the onset and timeline of Rigor Mortis (Dillion, Death and Kinetics. ). Other factors which can alter the reliability of prediction based on Rigor Mortis is if: the deceased person had an illness, the temperature of the atmosphere in which the body was discovered, what the person s activities were before death, and the conditions in which the body was found. Unlike Christian Science, Scientology is an independent religion. It was founded by a man named L. Ron Hubbard. Christian Science is based off Christianity. It is a new interpretation of the Bible. Scientology is a religious responds to therapeutic help. Christian Science centers on the idea of God. Scientology focuses on a person in need of help. Christian Science sees God as the only creator. Scientology believes that the creator is a person completely free. God has no importance in Scientology. They have a few similaries that also differ. For example, both have churches. A Christian Science church holds an hour long Sunday service. Just like traditional Christian services. They also have a Wednesday testimony meeting. A church of Scientology is open and staffed every day of the week, from morning until late at night. This way they can have auditing and training courses available. I gave extra space in between the groups for more clear traffic patterns for the children to walk to the carpet, their cubbies, or other areas of the room. • 18. The History of Prison Reform The History of Prison Reform Introduction The evolution of prison reform is a reflection of society s changing attitudes toward crime and punishment. Prisons have progressed from simple places for incarceration where the primary purpose is to protect the public to instruments of punishment where the loss of freedom is penalty for breaking the law, to institutions for reform dedicated to mould the guilty to conform to society s norms. Prisons were among the first public buildings erected in the New World. The city of Boston felt the need of a house of detention when the town consisted of a mere forty homes. Early American prisons were not conceived as houses of punishment. In English and American law, political prisoners and high ranking prisoners of war were occasionally incarcerated, but few common criminals could expect such treatment. Almost the only time commoners were locked away was while awaiting trial, once a verdict was delivered, they were punished on the spot or released (Lynch, 2011). The eighteenth century transformed not only the physical form of prisons but their function and their place in American consciousness. Discussion Initially imprisonment was a means of detaining debtors to ensure payment, the accused before trial, or the guilty before punishment. Courts imposed sentences including fines, personal mutilation such as flogging or branding, or death (Johnson, 2011). The only offense for which long term imprisonment was common was debt, though ... Despite the fact that the David s share time periods, political meanings, and origins, the two sculptures look completely different and evoke very different emotions. Perhaps the most significant difference is found in the choices made by the artists to place their sculpture before or after the battle against Goliath. Donatello s David is portrayed following the victory against the feared adversary. He is full of glory and stands on the head Goliath with his oversized sword clutched in his small hands. • 21. Legislative Framework Regarding Disclosures Practices LEGISLATIVE FRAMEWORK REGARDING DISCLOSURES PRACTICES IN INDIA The essential mechanism of the legal framework which governs the performance and functioning of listed companies in any country is the laws and regulations determining the quantity and quality of corporate disclosures. The core of governance is transparency, disclosure, accountability and integrity. Disclosures are very necessary for transparency and accountability of listed companies; these are by no means sufficient to ensure either of them. The main concern for disclosure regulations lies behind the basic question of why disclosures need to be regulated in the first place, and why not instead firms be allowed to voluntarily optimize the quality and quantity of disclosed information in response to market forces. There are basically two types of disclosures which are; Voluntary disclosure and required disclosure. Voluntary disclosures are those disclosures that are left to the discretion of the company and the level of which is determined by the management or shareholders by balancing at the margin level costs and benefits of disclosures. As these losses of innocence occur the reader begins to realize that each of them also seems to symbolize another loss of innocence but one that is just under the surface of literal meanings. • 28. Foreshadowing in Three Dirges Essay Foreshadowing In Three Dirges A sense of ominous foreboding permeates the woeful passage from Three Dirges. The conflict is immediately apparent : Don Lazaro, you ve got five boys in Comitan teaching the campesinos how to read. That s subversive. That s communist. So tonight, you have to kill them. Don Lazaro, the mayor of the war torn village, San Martin Comitan, seems to have no choice but to carry out this heartless command. His response is indicative of a desperate man searching for answers, yet already resigned to carrying out the task at hand. What can I say? you tell me! cries an anguished Don Lazaro to the villagers. Is he pleading for their understanding, or asking for a miraculous solution that would alter the path ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The feeling of fear and sadness is further portrayed by the crying of the village women, . . . a woman s anguish pierced the still, early morning, followed by yet a duet of wails, and then a full chorus of cries. Clearly, these women intuitively or otherwise , know of wrenching torment awaiting the village. The somber mood continues with the procession of religious officials making their way to the same destination as the wailing women. In contrast, however, the religious principales have assumed a formation of some sort; marching in six files, two abreast, ceremoniously fulfilling their obligation as if all hope had already eroded. That hope further dissipated when the young men, now being led each by an older man, made their way to the cemetery. The cemetery was an eery prediction of what was surely now about to happen. Don Lazaro has protested so much that there is nothing he can do, it now borders on the pathetic. Does he know of some additional harm that would befall him if he doesn t carry out this sinister plan? The young men, now willing to sacrifice their lives, and resigned to doing so, bravely meet their fate. The five young men, each escorted now by an older man, followed the cofrades over the ridge of the hill and dropped down on the other side just out of sight. Certainly the reader can see that, with the movement of the young men out of sight, the terrible command is surely about to be carried out. Still there may be time to ... The Pain Of Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain A study from the Pain Journal found that chronic musculoskeletal pain was more common than chronic neuropathic pain, however, neuropathic pain was found to be more severe and debilitating. Studies show that approximately 65% 85% of individuals with spinal cord injuries suffer from chronic pain. Many patients with spinal cord injuries will develop severe/excruciating neuropathic pain below the level of their injury. (Siddall et all, 2003). United States SCI veterans are susceptible to chronic neuropathic pain due to a wide range of contributing factors that include trauma, post traumatic stress disorder, surgery, anesthesia, prolonged immobilization, depression and anxiety, and mental illness or a combination of any aforementioned. Many of our SCI patients are on heavy pain medications that limit them from activities of daily living and affect their ability to participate in scheduled therapies in the hospital. For example, when our patients are on opioid medications, they are unable to drive which directly affects their ability to function normally in society. Additionally, these medications can lead to patients unwilling to leave the house or hospital because it will interfere with their regular drug administration times. In both of these instances, the patient s day becomes dependent upon drug administration. The doctrine of double effect if often invoked to explain the permissibility of an action that causes a serious harm, such as the death of a human being, as a side effect of promoting good ends. It is claimed that sometimes it is permissible to cause such harm as a side effect of bringing about a good result even though it would not be permissible to cause such harm as a means to bringing about the same good end. The reasoning is summarized with the claim that sometimes it is permissible to bring about as merely foreseen side effect a harmful event that it would be impermissible to bring about intentionally (Uniacke 1984). If I give the patient a fatal dose of pain killing drugs, it is no use saying that my intention was to relieve their symptoms of pain if the patient was not suffering from pain but from breathlessness. * The patient must be in a terminal condition: if I give the patient a fatal dose of pain killing drugs and they would have recovered from their disease or injury if I had not given them the drugs, it is no use saying that my intention was to relieve their pain. Scanlon s View on the Doctrine of Double Effect Scanlon explores the ethical significance of the intentions and motives with which people act. Instead of hanging a tiny mirror above the sink, use multiple mirrors or cover one whole wall with an oversized one. A full length mirror against the wall reflects lots of light and will add depth to a narrow bathroom. Open Shelves Mean More Moving Space If you absolutely rely on drawers to hide your clutter, consider a floating vanity without legs. These attach to the wall and keep your floors clear, which can make the room look and feel more spacious. While cabinets and vanities are must haves in small spaces with little storage, they physically and visually take up space. These famous words still ring true in today s society as we struggle to overcome the scientific experimentation on animals. Animals have acted as the archstone of human civilization since the dawn of man, from a source of food, to companionship. However, in the past century, we have been blurring the line between environmental entitlement and environmental rape. Every member of the human race interacts and depends on animals, and we owe them a certain level of respect in our society. I was not very aware of the different effects Disney can have on children, but I have always known that educational games are better. I am also able to identify the effects active or violent toys can have on boys, and from this lesson, I became more aware of the different side effects on girls. For example, when little girls collect Barbie dolls, movies and other toys related to Disney, they have a possibility not to accept their bodies when they become teenagers. It also helps me realize that everyone around me including myself is or was influence by the media. However, the outcomes can be different depending on how people manage media. It was interesting to realize how people become influenced by media. At first, the parents, including myself, buy toys to create an environment for children to move, interact and learn independently. As they grow older, the independence they developed as children will allow them to choose their own toys. Parents can be proud looking at their little children becoming independent not only at home but also in the market place. For parents that need to deal with Barbies or violent toys for boys, little do they know of what can develop behind their admiration. Once children develop an identity towards Disney anything their parents buy them will not be good enough and be old fashioned to them. Also, parents start feeling left out. For example, they ... Perhaps the International Civil Aviation Organization s standardization of the English language in aviation in 1951 was one of the most vital advances for flight safety. It would not be until the 70 s come around, when tragedy would hit and the ICAO would have to reevaluate their intervention with communication within aviation. Excitatory areas if illuminated produced an increased frequency of firing compared to inhibitory regions, although both did produce responses. Stationary spots showed that the excitatory and inhibitory regions were aligned side by side within the central responsive area, flanked by antagonistic areas. Light stimulus covering the whole receptive field was practically ineffective in most units due to mutual antagonism between excitatory and inhibitory regions, shown in figure 1 (f). A vertical slit of light was projected, which only covered the excitatory areas and avoided all inhibitory areas, however when turned horizontally, it touched inhibitory areas and responses were dramatically reduced or lost completely. This was due to the stimulation of excitatory areas being smaller than the antagonistic areas that were stimulated and thus responses shielded. The excitatory and inhibitory areas had similar shape and positioning and responded in the same way to directional movement (Hubel and Wiesel, 1959). Simple and Complex Cells ...
