Summary Of Coach Lombatte Speech
I will be analyzing a speech given by coach Vincent T. Lombardi. Coach Lombardi is widely
considered one of the greatest coaches of all time as well as one of the most influential voices in sports
history. The speech by coach Lombardi that I will be analyzing is called What it Takes to be Number
One. I will begin my analysis by introducing the background information of the speech and the
speaker. Then, I will describe the occasion of the speech in order to describe its significance. Finally, I
will analyze the rhetorical technique used by coach Lombardi to deliver a speech that left an
impression that still impacts.
The speech was given by Lombardi in 1970, the same year that he passed away and only one short
year before he was inducted into ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The main way that Lombardi created such an influential speech was through his style and invention of
arguments. Coach Lombardi used a style in his speech that made everything very clear to the
audience. His speech was very casual and used language that, although powerful and moving, was
easily understood by anyone who listened to the speech. This allowed his speech to connect with a
much wider audience than football players, fans, or reporters. Still, today, this speech is easily
understood but conveys the powerful message that anything is possible through hard work. It is so
well known, that it is used on motivational posters today. Furthermore, apart from the simplistic,
powerful style, Lombardi uses a type of invention for his arguments that makes his perspective very
clear to see. For example, he argues that a football player must play in his entirety in order to be
successful. He begins this argument by saying, he s got to play from the ground up from the soles of
his feet right up to his head. He then emphasizes this point another time by saying that every inch of
him has to play. He then introduces the counter perspective that Some guys play with their heads. He
says that this is good because you need to be smart to be the best. However, he says that the most
important thing is that you play with your heart, with every fiber of your body. This

How War Shaped American Society
How did the War affect Americans lives and continue to shape American lives in the 21st century in
the following categories: War Industry (Women in the work force, Rosie the Riveter) War
Entertainment (Censorship, Music, Movies, USO, Bob Hope, Pin Up Girls) At Home (Rationing,

way the world worked and ushered us into a new generation. Women began to work, the entertainment

Women were just beginning to break into new jobs and industries during World War II. In addition to
women working in factories and on home fronts 350,000 women also joined the armed forces. In May
1942 Congress began a new service branch called the Women s Auxiliary Army Corps they also
became Airforce Service Pilot s. Although women were getting various jobs in the workforce the
aviation industry saw the largest increase in female employees. In 1953 they made up 65% of the
aviation industry workers in comparison to the 1% they made up prior to the war. Women were
changing their role they were taking steps to better themselves and they were spending less time
relying on men.Propaganda like Rosie the Riveter became one of the most successful recruitment tools
it depicted the strength of women and represented the ability of the nation to pull together in a tough
time. Rosie brought to life the idea that this was everyone s fight everyone had to do their part in the
war effort and the workforce wasn t just a man s world anymore. Those qualities have carried on to
our current generation and it improved women s roles in society. The war provided an opportunity for

China s Effect On Child Labor
Imagine a twelve year old child getting up every morning going to work in a factory instead of going
to school to get an education. Yes this is the reality in China for many young children. While here is
the US many children at the age of 12 are in elementary school, children in China are working in
factory industries making toys and other goods to export out to the US and other countries. For years,
China has engaged in the use of child labor, wage levels below international standards, and unsafe
ergonomic conditions.
Some facts about China is that they are a communist country and currently the president of China is
Xi Jinping. They have the largest population of people in the world with more than 1.3 billion people.
There was a one child policy per couple in effect and that policy has recently been amended. A few of
their major cities like Dogguan, and Tianjin have been found guilty of child labor abuse
(Asianhistory.About, 2014).
China entered the WTO in December 2001. It had been a long process of negations with the WTO
formerly the GATT. For China this was a big step. The process took about 15 years before China was
accessioned into the WTO. According to an article Free trade it took this long mainly due to getting
the country s politics and policy making process to produce conditions that would allow them to
submit a bid into the WTO and eventually become part of the WTO (Harold, 2008). Once China
became part of the WTO they have tremendous economic growth.

Theme Of Euthanasia In The Million Dollar Baby
Million Dollar Baby, released in 20014, is a film directed by Clint Eastwood. He also stars as one of
the main characters by the name of Frankie Dunn. The film also stars Hillary Swank as Maggie and
Morgan Freeman as Eddie Dupris. This film is categorized as a sports drama and explores a variety of
issues. However, one of the moral dilemmas that come up strongly in this film is euthanasia. Although
it comes up towards the end of the film, it has a huge impact on how one perceives the whole film.
Euthanasia continues to be a moral dilemma for many people, especially Christians. This is because it
covers the very important issue of life and death. Though legal in some countries and several states in
the United States, it is still a hot topic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the beginning, Frankie appeared strong in his decision against proceeding with euthanasia. He was
strong enough to tell her that he could not do it, basing his decision on his beliefs. Eventually, he gives
up and decided to go ahead with the decision yet he knows that it is wrong. Though it was a difficult
decision for him to make, it is still not the right one. At one point, Frankie talks to Father Horvak and
expresses his conflicted feelings. Father Horvak advises Frankie to leave Maggie with God, since it is
wrong to kill a human being even under the circumstances. In his perspective, Frankie justifies the act
by saying that it is wrong for him to let her suffer any longer. He makes an individual decision that
goes against his faith and kills Maggie, just to end her suffering. It might have seemed like a good
decision at the time since it would end Maggie s suffering, but he still killed her, which is wrong. The
decision that Frankie made had a huge impact on his relationship with God, self and others. First, after
helping Maggie die, Frankie felt a disconnection from God. His relationship with God would never be
the same again, since he had knowingly committed sin. Secondly, Frankie s relationship with himself
changed as he felt guilty for what he had

The Ghost Dance Movement
Throughout the settlement of Western America, Native Americans were culturally assimilated. This
was an attempt by the Americans to transform the Natives culture and civilize them through white
education and living on reservations. However, the Natives preserved their cultures, tribal identities,
and even developed self sustaining economic practices. First, The Ghost Dance Movement was a
revival of Native beliefs that further helped them regain hope through religion. Specifically, it was a
religion of the late 1880s and early 1890s that combined elements of Christianity and traditional
Native American religion. It fostered the Plains Indians hope that they could resurrect the great bison

Mississippi Casino Gambling
Casino gambling remains a controversial issue, mostly due to personal and religious views on the
negative effects (gambling addictions) it has on society. However, there seems to be very little
controversy relating to the role the casino industry has in the state s economic and tourism
development. The purpose of the paper is to provide a synopsis of the role Mississippi s casino
industry has played in the state s economic and tourism industry. The report focuses on three
jurisdictions: Tunica, Greenville, and the Gulf Coast. The report supports my theory that the
Mississippi casino industry unequivocally has a positive impact on the state s economy and tourism
industry.

How Does Piaget Use Hypothetical Deductive Reasoning
According to Piaget and his stages of development, formal operational thinking allows adolescents to
think, reason, and problem solve at more complex levels than they could before. When adolescents
reach this stage of development, they develop the capacity to think abstractly about concepts and
reason more logically about multiple complex issues. With the onset of this stage, new skills emerge
such as hypothetical deductive reasoning. Hypothetical deductive reasoning is a key characteristic that
makes teens so good at arguing and debating with others. It is because of this specific skill that
adolescents can develop an answer and defend, debate, and logically explain that answer.
To demonstrate a situation in which a teen uses hypothetical

Kaluza Klein Theory and Higher Dimensions
Kaluza Klein Theory and Higher Dimensions I. Introduction Human civilization has always been
characterized by our ceaseless curiosity and awe for what we do not comprehend. Our wonder for
what lies beyond the scope of our daily lives has been the driving force for innovation and
advancement. The intensity of our fascination for what lie beyond is consummately personified in the
late astrologer and philosopher Giordano Bruno(1548 1600). Captivated by gazing into the night sky,
Bruno dreamed of a homogenous universe(reference to phy 312) with a multitude suns with earth like
planets rotating about them just like our own solar system. Publicly hailed a heretic, Bruno was
rejected from scientific and religious communities alike. Even after being excommunicated by three
different churches and denounced at Oxford University, Bruno held on tight to his beliefs. His ideas
would eventually lead him to the stake where he was burned to death on charges of heresy and
opposing the catholic faith. Bruno s death served as indispensable sacrifice for modern day cosmology
and our scientific community. It ultimately marked the beginning of humanity s questioning of
whether our world is actually what tradition tells us. Whether if it was Einstein questioning Newton s
long held laws of motions or Bohr questioning Einstein s beliefs on quantum mechanics, history has
repeatedly shown that curiosity about what we do not know is integral towards the advancement of
science. In Bruno s

Romanian Culture Interview Essay
Though I was born in Detroit and am a first generation American, I have always identified more with
my Romanian heritage. My parents escaped from communist Romania and found a community of
other Romanians also seeking solace here in Michigan. We connected with each other through
churches spread throughout southeast Michigan. And so, I would be able to spend time with my
extended family and a multitude of other Romanians at least once every week. There is a saying here:
It takes a village to raise a child, and that could not be more true of the Romanian family that raised

In Romanian culture, it is incredibly important to respect your elders as well as each other. I deduced
that the purpose behind this cultural phenomenon was to learn from others. By respecting my
Romanian elders, I opened up the avenue to understand and apply their wisdom. For example, I owe
them my strong work ethic. Due to the fact that many Romanians lost everything when they came
overseas, I was raised to never take anything for granted. This included my own intelligence. As an
example, during my academic studies I made sure that I was not over confident of my abilities and
prepared to do extra work in order to insure my success. In fact, I came up with a saying to motivate
myself: Work hard enough so that it s impossible to fail. Each time I struggled in a class, certain that I
would receive my first B, I would apply this work ethic in order to deal with the stress. Thus, I feel
that I would be of great use to the medical community as I am no stranger to arduous work. My

Summary Of The I Didn t A Christian Friend Essay
Sitting outside on the paint chipped, front porch in the middle of a sweltering night, listening to my
casually Christian friend, Cassie, tell a vaguely interesting story about her mother to another one of
my casually Christian friends, Shelby, was the first time I realized I wasn t a Christian.
And I don t really know if all this is true, she just rushed through the story over the phone a minute
ago, but my mom said that the stoplights had been out for a couple hours and when she pulled up at
the intersection and it was her turn to go, somebody cuts in front of her going the other direction. She
says it would ve been a huge accident, but the light flashed red for a second, so she hit the brakes and
missed the other car by a few feet, Cassie reported, wrapping up her story.
Wow, Shelby paused for a second. Just another one of God s miracles, she sighed unequivocally with
an optimistic, spiritual air.
I didn t let the verbal vomit register in my brain by merely not sanctioning it to enter in the first place.
I never understood how someone can believe in miracles. How can one have so much blind faith? This
world is not full of miracles, this world is full of the same humdrum twists of fate that occur to every
one of us time and time again in our compendious lives. With the world population over six billion,

Disability In Still Alice
Independent film can be examined by 5 terms: the relation in its work process, it means of production,
the financing of its film, its conception of quality films and its system of consumption (Bordwell,
Staiger and Thompson, 1985, p.317). The second film that will argue the representation of a minority
group is the independent drama film, Still Alice (2014) directed by Richard Glazer with his partner
Wash Westmoreland. Still Alice worked on a smaller budget in comparison to MBY totalling up to

The Life of Britney Spears Essay
I have selected Britney Spears as my subject for the reason that I realize that she has been through so
much in her life and has a tendency to convey her emotions radically and live life on the edge most of
the times. Moreover, I find it simply fascinating to scrutinize Britney Spears personality by means of
the Psychoanalysis so as to offer deeper comprehension in investigating her personality. Even though
this process of personality analysis is hardly ever employed today due to a deficiency of empirical
verification and a disappointment to deal with any adulthood impact on personality, the approach s

Birth Defects
Birth Defetc s No one is immune to birth defetc s, yet not everyone is equally susceptible.
Birth defetc s are not merely a medical problem. They have profound effetc s on the social and
psychological well being of their family and friends. In the normal course of fetal development, cells
migrate to their appropriate destination so that organs and limbs form where they should. Usually, the
genes perform flawlessly, but mistakes can and do occur. Some of the most common birth defetc s
results from the interaction between one or two abnormal genes out of 100,000 that make up who we
are. This is caused by the genes parents pass on or effetc ed by drugs and alcohol upon the fetus of a
new born child. Down s syndrome, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Spina bifida is hereditary and some other factors may be involved, such as drugs or alcohol and even
the environment.
True genetic disease are distinguished from diseases in which genetic factors play a part in the
causation of the disorder, but are not totally responsible for the disease Strom 117). Mutations causing
birth defetc s are not the result of a single gene but, have some genetic components in their causation.
Therefore certain birth defetc s are prone to occur repeatedly in families but, not to be considered
purely genetic such as spina bifida. Other causes of birth disorders are causes from drug and alcohol
abuse while pregnant. When a woman uses drugs during pregnancy, she is not only damaging her
health, but also that of her unborn child. The most harmful drugs are those classified as narcotics (
cocaine ,heroin etc
). Other harmful substance include alcohol, tobacco and caffeine. A women s inter uterine
environment is designed to protetc the fetus from external injury and to assure proper nutrition. Fetal
homeostasis is however heavily dependent on the maternal habitat and can easily be subjetc ed to the
harmful effetc s of drug and alcohol misuse (Gardner 1). In marked contrast, alcohol purchase and
consumption carries few restrictions and in terms of damage to the

Autism Spectrum Disorder and its Characteristics Essay
In 2000, one in every one hundred and fifty children was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder.
Since then, there has been a drastic increase of the incidence of this disorder. In 2013, according to the
Centers for Disease Control, autism spectrum disorder occurs in one out of eighty eight children.
(CDC, 2013) That is a significant increase over a relatively short period of time. With such an
increase, it is important to learn what autism spectrum disorder is and what might cause it.
Autism spectrum disorder is the term used for a group of disorders in brain development. It is a
complex disorder and symptoms usually appear before the child is age five. It is called a spectrum
disorder because each person is affected differently ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first is a pattern of irregular language development. Although, most people with autism do
develop language skills, they are generally not at a level of a typically developing person and the
progress of their language development is usually slow and irregular. An example of the irregular
pattern of speech development seen in autism is Echolalia. Some estimates say that 85% of those with
autism spectrum disorder who are verbal with show Echolalia in some form. (Teach Me to Talk, 2008)
There are two types of echolalia. Immediate echolalia and delayed echolalia. Immediate echolalia
occurs when the child echoes the words immediately after another says them. Delayed echolalia is
when a child repeats the words or phrases long after they were originally said. This can occur days,
weeks, or even months later. Another example of irregular speech development is prosody. Webster
dictionary defines prosody as the rhythm and pattern of the sounds of language. Some people with
autism may know the correct vocabulary to use but are unable to use a correct tone of voice. Not only
are they unable to use prosody, but they are not able to detect its use others. (Rudy, 2010) This can
make them appear emotionally distant, or uninterested. An example of this is; a child, who has autism
spectrum disorder, is talking

Morragh Mine
Morragh Mine 1. Identify the hazards in the case, which can be environmental, situational, human or
ergonomic. Environmental Hazards Mining is a dangerous occupation, and many of these dangers are
associated with the environment in which the miners worked. One environmental hazard evident in
this case was the dangers the miners encountered while working underground. While working in this
type of situation there are always threats of cave ins and because the environment is underground there
would be a lack of natural light. Situational Hazards Situational hazards are known as unsafe
conditions which exist when proper measures are not taken by company officials, for example,

Management was not allowing adequate time for maintenance work. It was reported that two months
before the explosion a maintenance worker could not complete repair work on mining equipment
because it was needed for work underground. Because management allowed broken equipment to be
involved in dangerous mining operations this would be a human hazard. Maintenance workers were
also required to modify machinery in order to conform to safety regulations. This is a human hazard
because workers are required to work with machinery that could possibly be dangerous and employees
maybe using the machinery improperly. Management did not encourage the development of an
occupational health and safety committee. The company never encouraged the committee to meet and
discuss safety concerns and management was not involved with the committee. There were also
problems with mining inspections, government investigations into this problem produced
irregularities. Many orders issued by mining inspectors were not carried out. Management and mining
inspectors not ensuring that safety standards were followed is a human hazard. 2. How does the case

Similarities Between Sumerian And Mesopotamia
The ancient civilizations of Sumer and Egypt were each shaped by their environments. In the Sumer
civilization they lived on a flat plain with few mountains to buffer them from invasion and relied on
an unpredictable twin river system. Sumer lacked vital natural resources such as wood and precious
metals. In Egypt they had the advantage of a consistent flooding season as well as protection of
natural barriers surrounding them. These natural boundaries included desert, mountain, as well as
water. Where Sumer lacked natural resources, Egypt was blessed with a plentiful supply of them.
From the river flooding of their plains to the natural barriers or lack thereof surrounding their area
helped influence how these civilizations handled their government, writing, and agriculture. The
nature of their life giving rivers affected both Sumer and Egypt. Whether it was the consistent
flooding of the Nile or the erratic nature of the Tigris Euphrates delta each river had an impact on the
way of life in these civilizations. Sumer blossomed in the Tigers Euphrates valley in an area referred
to as Mesopotamia which The Earth and its Peoples defines as land between rivers For the Sumerians
the Tigris and Euphrates flooding was unpredictable and would destroy farms and crops. The flooding
in Mesopotamia would occur in the summer from the melting snow in the mountains, too late for the
ideal planting season. However, the twin rivers provided vital trade routes as well as rich silt that

Disadvantages Of Megacities
Overview
Cities exist because of the benefits of centralized production and exchange. By living and working in
cities, we achieve a higher standard of living but also put up with pollution, noise and congestion. (O
Sullivan, 2012)
Megacities are large and highly dynamic systems, and represent concentrated sites of human life as
well as ecological stress and pollution. Due to the combination of pollution and stress as
neighbourhoods grow in size and their resource capacity, the transformation in social environmental
relations is also observed. Over time more local environmental hazards associated with inadequate
services and sanitation is being replaced by risks that accrue at the city scale. Most megacities are
important nodes in the production of pollution and greenhouse emissions which have negative impacts
on populations at regional and also global scales. Historically coastal megacities have recorded some
of the highest economic losses due to disaster events but megacities are also the centres of capacity,
ingenuity and resources. The management of hazards, vulnerability and environmental management in
megacities is very complex, and governance responses require special attention to the multiple scales
of impact. (Mark Pelling, 2013)

conditions of rapid urban growth, which is likely to increase travel demand significantly. (S. K. Goyal,

A Vanished World Chris Lowney Summary
A Vanished World by Chris Lowney Book Report A vanished World written by Chris Lowney
chronicles the daily life of the Jews, Muslims and Christians, living in the Muslim kingdoms in
Medieval Spain. He covers different spectrum of this world that was torn by religious antagonism. In
Medieval Spain, in the medieval Spanish villages Muslims, Christians, and Jews rubbed shoulders on
a daily basis. They shared irrigation system, bathhouses, municipal ovens, and marketplaces. But they
created a system that made everything work efficiently. Medieval Spaniards introduced Europeans to
paper manufacture, Hindu Arabic numerals, philosophical classics, algebra, citrus fruits, cotton, and
new medical techniques. More astonishing than Spain s wide ranging accomplishments, however, was
the simple fact that until the destruction of the last Muslim Kingdom by King Ferdinand and Queen
Isabella in 1492, Spain s Muslims, Christians, and Jews often managed to bestow tolerance and
freedom of worship on the minorities in their midst. A Vanished World chronicles this panoramic
sweep of human history and achievement, encompassing both the agony of Jihad, Crusades, and
Inquisition, and the glory of a multi religious, multi cultural civilization that forever changed the West.
Chris Lowney in his writing showed how these three controversial religious groups once lived and
worked together in Spain, creating commerce, culture, art, and architecture. He reveals how these

Iago s Character Exposed Through Language and Diction in Othello
Everyone at some point in their lives attempts to convince someone to behave certain ways and to do
specific things that ultimately will only benefit the person doing the convincing. Throughout the entire
book, Othello, Iago attempts to convince numerous people in order to in the end only benefit and help
himself. In this scene, Roderigo is explaining to Iago how he no longer wants to love because he is
without Desdemona s love. Iago then focuses on convincing Roderigo not only out of suicide, but also
into getting Desdemona back. If Iago was unable to encourage Roderigo to go back after Desdemona,

Another example if flattering diction that Iago uses in his appeal is found in line 302, when Iago refers
to Roderigo as a sill gentleman . The term gentleman makes it appear as though Iago thinks highly of
what Roderigo does and hopefully shows Roderigo the trust that Iago has in him.
Iago also tries to persuade Roderigo through the different types of language techniques and appeals:
ethos, pathos, and logos. Iago uses the appeal to ethos twice in the passage, in line 331 and then again
in lines 355 357. In line 331, Iago says Come, be a man! . This statement appeals to Roderigo s sense
of pride in his character. There is no man that does not delight in being called a real man. Iago uses the
same type appeal to pride in lines 355 357 when he says that it would be better to die by hanging with
her rather than to die by drowning without her. This also shows Roderigo that he should at least have
the joy of winning the prize when he dies. Iago also appeals to Roderigo s pathos in line 301 when he
says that if Roderigo kills himself by drowning, then Iago will never love him after he dies. This is a
phrase that Iago uses to appeal to Roderigo s emotion. This touches Roderigo s emotions because no
one wants to do something that will cause those around them to not love and cherish them when they
are gone. Lastly, Iago appeals to Roderigo s logic, or logos. This is best

Victorian Era Research Paper
The Victorian Era started with Queen Victoria s rule from June 20, 1837 to her death on January 22,
1901.
The Victorian Era primarily describes a period of English history, where Britain saw a rise in
industrialization, growth in the economy, growth of the middle class, growth of a large population, and
a large scale expansion of imperial power.
The society was extremely conservative and patriarchal. There was an idea called the Cult of
Domesticity that believed that a woman s identity should consist of piety, purity, domesticity, and
submissiveness.
However, this era saw the birth and rise of political and social movements such as socialism,
liberalism, and organized feminism.
Because of the rapid changes that occurred during the Victorian Era, it brought out rapid changes in
literature.
The most popular topics for Victorian Era novels were industrialization, class, science vs. religion,
progress, utilitarianism, the role of women in society, and how to live an ideal life.
This era also saw an increase of works in a large variety of subjects such as scientific works,
philosophy, nature writing, and Gothic tales.
Early Victorian works, emphasized the notion of what is English or what constitutes an Englishman .
This is mostly due to how conservative the society was. Later Victorian works rebelled against these
ideas.
The novel became the most popular form of literature during the Victorian Era. Many of them were
originally serialized.
Many novels during this era helped develop our current popular genres such as fantasy and science
fiction.
There was a rise in female novelists, but they went under male pseudonyms because of how male
patriarchal the society was and female writers were often shunned.
The most popular writer of this time was Charles Dickens.
The Bronte sisters wrote many significant works, but they were not appreciated by Victorian critics.
Others famous writers include:
William Thackeray, who wrote Vanity Fair
Thomas Hardy, who wrote Far from the Madding Crowd
Oscar Wilde, who wrote The Picture of Dorian Gray
George Eliot (Mary Anne Evans), who wrote Middlemarch

Consumer Rights And Consumer Strengths
CONSUMER RIGHTS AND CONSUMER MYTHS A CRITICAL STUDY
ABSTRACT
Consumer right is the right to have information or the right to know about the potency, quality,
quantity, price, purity and standard of goods and services. The consumers should be protected from
unfair trade practices. It is very important and mandatory for the consumers to know their rights. If
they know their rights properly then they can be saved from exploitation from the shop keepers. To
safeguard the consumers and their rights the Consumer Protection Act of 1986 has been introduced. It
ensures correct information to the consumers and fair competition in the market. But on the other side
consumers are also exploited. Many people are cheated by low quality or duplicate products but
people do not claim for it. Nowadays we are not able to find the duplicate and original products. There
are many consumer rights but there are some facts and myths too. Most of the people are not aware of
their consumer rights and who to complain once any of the rights are infringed. Though consumer
rights are provided with each and every consumer should be aware of the products which they buy. On
the one side consumers are protected by their rights on the other side consumers are being cheated by

How Did Architecture Influence Roman Architecture
Roman architects did not invent the Arch nor for that matter concrete, but they did however refine and
apply these key architectural techniques and materials to sublime effect we will explore the impact the
use of these two elements had on the development of Roman architecture, how they affected everyday
life in Rome and the results of their use. .
Some of the earliest evidence of the application of the arch date back to the second millennium BCE,
the Romans adopted it from other cultures and were drawn to a number of key attributes of this shape.

The resultant aggregate was very strong and durable as the numerous examples of structures

employed under water concrete technology on a large scale. In addition to the system of aqueducts,
concrete technology allowed Roman engineers to create networks of dams, canals and cisterns that
played a vital role in irrigation and feeding Rome s populace. Rome also constructed a number of
military installations including walls and strategic garrisons which helped to defend her citizens. The
construction of strategic bridges also helped logistically in moving Roman forces across her empire
which allowed her to maintain a military dominance that lasted for centuries. Roman concrete also
allowed for the creation of grand temples, baths and public buildings that helped maintain social
cohesion, supported the political system and influenced the Roman psyche engendering a pride and
confidence which no doubt played a vital role in developing the Roman

Strange Fruit Controversy
Following our nation s reconstruction, racist sentiments continued to occur and White on Black
violence was prevalent throughout society. The horrible act of lynching African Americans was
thoroughly widespread in the United States, particularly in the South. It is said that approximately
4,742 individuals were lynched between 1882 and 1968; of the victims, 3,445 or seventy three percent
were African American (Perloff 315). An image of two lynched young men inspired Abel Meeropol to
create the poem, Strange Fruit, later converted into a song by Billie Holiday. On August 7, 1930 in

to the black bodies in the beginning of the song by stating that southern trees bear a strange fruit (1).
Fruit is usually sweet and appealing however, in this case, Meeropol uses the fruit as a metaphor to
describe the bodies hanging from the trees giving the lyrics tremendous significance. Also, in the first
stanza, Meeropol says blood on the leaves and blood on the root (2) to signify that the guilt of the
white people forever remains on the southern trees. This line is powerful because Abel Meeropol is
outwardly deploring the South for lynching. At this time, there had been no other African American
who had spoken out against racists and White on Black violence, making Strange Fruit such an
important touchstone. Meeropol shows the extent of racism by

mainly used with cheques as people can change the numbers on cheques to make the total larger. If
this does happen then the pen they used would most likely be a different brand and could be seen by
the different colours that have been used to create the ink.
The plant cycle is fairly simple. It begins with a seed that cracks and a tiny shoot appears, soon the
shoot grows up to become the stem and the roots grow down into the soil. Then the plant gets taller
and the stem gets thicker. Leaves begin to grow of the stem and flowers can begin to grow to. Soon
the flower creates a new seed which makes the whole thing begin again. The plant however would
need water, sunlight and air.
Pollen grains can be used at a crime scene as the pollen grains differ in size, shape and texture. Pollen
samples can show whether a person was present at the crime. Fibres can look very different under the
microscope so can be compared to those found on the suspects clothing. The fibres can be matched to
the victims clothes or hairs for example to prove that he was present at the crime also if these same
fibres are found at the place of a crime then people know that that is where the crime took place
however lots of different pollen grains would have been left there as other people would have been in

Analysis:
Drug release data for curcumin was fitted into 5 mathematical models and studied to determine the
best mathematical model. The model chosen were:
i. Zero Order Kinetics
The zero order kinetics depends upon the initial concentration of the drug loaded on the nanoparticles
and refers to constant release of drug5,6. Zero order kinetics is represented as:
Qt=Qo+k*t
Qt = amount of drug dissolved in time t, Qo=initial amount of drug, k=zero order kinetics constant
ii. First Order Kinetics
The release of the drug which followed first order kinetics can be expressed by the equation7: log C =
log C0 Kt / 2.303
Co is the initial concentration of drug, k is the first order rate constant, and t is the time
iii. Hixon Crowell Release Kinetics
Hixson and Crowell derived the equation: Q01/3 Qt1/3 = κ*t where Q0 is the initial amount of drug,
Qt is the remaining amount of drug at time t and κ (kappa) constant incorporates surface volume
relation. The equation describes the release from systems where there is a change in surface area and
diameter of particles or tablets9.
iv. Higuchi Release Kinetics
Higuchi drug release kinetics model was proposed Higuchi in 1961 based on a matrix system8. The

The rate of browning could ve been even more if the bananas in the toaster oven were also kept in
their environment for 9.5 hours. The lack of partners may have made the data slightly inaccurate. For
example when the banana was placed into the water, it was shaken. When it was shaken, the banana
fragments were mixed with the water more, but after the shaking, the banana fragments clumped
together and floated to the bottom. Because the flasks could only be shaken two at a time (one for
each hand on a single person), they were not all shaken at the same time. Therefore, some flasks were
strained into water after a shorter period of time than others. Having a partner/partners could ve
enabled all the flasks to be shaken and strained into the water simultaneously.
Because the same banana was used for all five trials of each level, there might ve been more errors in

Phaedrus Essay
Purposely difficult and intentionally obsessive, Plato s Phaedrus is an exceedingly difficult read that
defies all conventional logic as a piece of discourse. The text is extremely subjective, open to
interpretation and individual creativity as to what or whom the narrative is about. Written by Plato, a
close disciple of Socrates, this text is set along the Illissus river where Phaedrus and Socrates meet for
a day of speech, debate, rhetoric and okay...flirting. Phaedrus leads of the day and recites a speech by
his close friend Lysias, who Phaedrus considers to be a top speechmaker. Socrates then, after chiding
by Phaedrus unleashes two speeches of his own that overshadow and refute Lysias claim so boldly
that Phaedrus is so taken by the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We, on our part, must prove that such madness is given by the gods for our greatest happiness; and our
proof will not be accepted by the merely clever, but will accepted by the truly wise (469).
It is my intention with this quote to show the crucial relationship between madness and the evolution
of higher thought. I argue very plainly for this correlation linking the truly wise and madness because
it demonstrates Socrates attempt to dangle an idea in front of Phaedrus, who after Socrates 1st speech
was expecting a philosophical, structured way of defining the soul and now left to wonder what
madness has to do with anything. The quote defends the claim that madness is an essential part of
Socrates attempt to persuade Phaedus (the reader) that madness is not something bad; the way Lysias
outlined it in his speech, but an obligatory element in developing a passion for something.
My discourse has shown that this is, of all inspirations, the best and of the highest origin to him who
has it or who shares in this madness, is called a lover (483).
Taken from Socrates 2nd speech, Socrates is using madness now on a different level, this time as tool
to describe inspiration to be a lover. Socrates literally cites his entire speech to explain how madness
leads to love; to passion, not just an evolution of thinking, but also a pursuit of how it manifests itself
through madness. It is the madness that I consider

Roald Dahl s The Landlady
Roald Dahl s realistic fiction story, The LandLady, takes place at a bed and breakfast owned by the
landlady where she also lives. Billy Weaver, a seventeen year old guy, was looking for a place to stay,
and he walks by the landlady s house. He was going to keep walking when a sign suddenly caught his
eye and next thing he knew, he was ringing the doorbell. By using sentence variety with lots of
description, Roald Dahl creates the lesson that it is essential to be aware and conscientious of one s
immediate surroundings.
Throughout the story, the lack of awareness and being conscientious is a central issue that affects all of
the characters. Bill Weaver lacks an awareness of what is going on throughout the story and he is not
being cautious ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Throughout the story, Billy is not aware and conscientious of his immediate surroundings. When Billy
is walking down the street and sees the landlady s sign, he seems to be drawn into the house. BED
AND BREAKFAST, it said. BED AND BREAKFAST, BED AND BREAKFAST. Each word was like
a large black eye staring at him through the glass. These words are holding him compelling him
forcing him to stay where he was and not to walk away from that house (2). This does not even make
Billy have the slightest doubt about anything. Dahl uses the sensory detail of sight to draw in the
reader to the sign as it did to Billy when Billy keeps repeating what the sign said over and over again.
Dahl not only uses sensory detail as a craft to develop his ideas, but he also uses sentence variety with
lots of description through his story. Dahl describing how Billy is being drawn to go to the house
shows his craft for developing his ideas. Billy found himself automatically starting forward into the
house. The compulsion or, more accurately, the desire to follow after her into that house was
extraordinarily strong (2). The way Dahl describes how Billy is feeling the desire to follow the lady
really helps the reader imagine and almost feel the urge that he is. With Dahl s

Positive Aspects Of Being An American
Being an American means having the chance to voice your opinion. This can be either good or bad for
multiple reasons. A few positive reasons are that you may have a view that no one has considered or
you may have new ideas for laws and/or acts. A few negatives to everyone has a say is that mainly
elite upper class white males or people with massive amounts of funding are elected to positions of
power. In addition to the political system we have in place we have a great economic system. In
America we are free to buy and sell almost anything we would like to. The one stipulation is that you
cannot sell controlled substances and things of that nature. We are also able to hold a vast assortment
of jobs instead of having a few that the government allows us to choose from. Finally, America has a
great social system. In America you are allowed to practice your religion without being arrested or
killed. We also have a great assortment of different cultures and ethnic groups. America isn t called a
melting pot for nothing. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Everyone that is over 18 is allowed to vote; regardless of race, gender, and religious beliefs. The bad
part about this is that children don t get a say in what happens even though they are today s future.
Another fascinating part of America s government is that we have two main political that represent us
in congress. This is great if the party you support holds a majority of the seats because you can pass
just about anything you want to. If the party that you are supporting is the minority party, then there s
not much that you can do without convincing the opposition which can be very difficult at times.
America may have one of the best political systems in the world, but we still have a lot of learning and
tweaking to do in order to make it the best it can

Mountain Equipment Co-Op
The following report documents 5 different areas of focus pertaining to the following company
Mountain Equipment Co op , Please enjoy...
Marketing Management Orientation:
The Societal Marketing concept is the orientation best exemplified by Mountain Equipment Co Op
(MEC). This is evident in the following ways: The company s mission statement clearly outlines that
passion is what drives their company, even over profit. The passion to continue to look for ways to
protect our wild spaces and reduce the ecological footprint of their business. MEC separates itself
from other outdoor retailers through its eco friendly product line and superior focus on corporate
social responsibility. They urge society to count on them to act with integrity ... Show more content on

The monetary fee is just clever business practice, the real idea behind this is to let the potential market
know that MEC truly values your business and would like you to become apart of our business
structure going forward. Lastly, Mountain Equipment Co op has undertaken many business initiatives
to solidify customer loyalty from top to bottom of the organization. Back in 1997, they introduced a
free of charge online gear swap where members could recycle used outdoor gear. In 2007, MEC
opened the first accredited Green LEED(The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)
distribution center in Surrey, British Columba. LEED encourages and accelerates global adoption of
sustainable green building and development practices. In 2008, MEC developed and launched a series
of annual national paddling and biking expositions. Its been clearly defined that MEC takes a very
Green approach when it comes to business, this is something that directly plays into that target market.
A self propelled wilderness oriented recreation goer would certainly buy into such strong values and
ultimately stick by that company.
Segmentation Variables:
One of Mountain Equipment Co op s key main marketing strategies is one of product leadership
through supporting price, promotion and distribution strategies. This allows them to gain loyalty from
their customer s year after year. MEC is a retail co operative owned by those who shop at their stores.

Coach Lombardi is widely considered one of the greatest coaches of all time as well as one of the most influential voices in sports history. The speech by coach Lombardi that I will be analyzing is called What it Takes to be Number One. I will begin my analysis by introducing the background information of the speech and the speaker. Then, I will describe the occasion of the speech in order to describe its significance. Finally, I will analyze the rhetorical technique used by coach Lombardi to deliver a speech that left an impression that still impacts. The speech was given by Lombardi in 1970, the same year that he passed away and only one short year before he was inducted into ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The main way that Lombardi created such an influential speech was through his style and invention of arguments. Coach Lombardi used a style in his speech that made everything very clear to the audience. His speech was very casual and used language that, although powerful and moving, was easily understood by anyone who listened to the speech. This allowed his speech to connect with a much wider audience than football players, fans, or reporters. Still, today, this speech is easily understood but conveys the powerful message that anything is possible through hard work. It is so well known, that it is used on motivational posters today. Furthermore, apart from the simplistic, powerful style, Lombardi uses a type of invention for his arguments that makes his perspective very clear to see. For example, he argues that a football player must play in his entirety in order to be successful. He begins this argument by saying, he s got to play from the ground up from the soles of his feet right up to his head. He then emphasizes this point another time by saying that every inch of him has to play. He then introduces the counter perspective that Some guys play with their heads. He says that this is good because you need to be smart to be the best. However, he says that the most important thing is that you play with your heart, with every fiber of your body. This ... This film is categorized as a sports drama and explores a variety of issues. However, one of the moral dilemmas that come up strongly in this film is euthanasia. Although it comes up towards the end of the film, it has a huge impact on how one perceives the whole film. Euthanasia continues to be a moral dilemma for many people, especially Christians. He was strong enough to tell her that he could not do it, basing his decision on his beliefs. Eventually, he gives up and decided to go ahead with the decision yet he knows that it is wrong. Though it was a difficult decision for him to make, it is still not the right one. At one point, Frankie talks to Father Horvak and expresses his conflicted feelings. Father Horvak advises Frankie to leave Maggie with God, since it is wrong to kill a human being even under the circumstances. In his perspective, Frankie justifies the act by saying that it is wrong for him to let her suffer any longer. He makes an individual decision that goes against his faith and kills Maggie, just to end her suffering. It might have seemed like a good decision at the time since it would end Maggie s suffering, but he still killed her, which is wrong. The decision that Frankie made had a huge impact on his relationship with God, self and others. First, after helping Maggie die, Frankie felt a disconnection from God. His relationship with God would never be the same again, since he had knowingly committed sin. Secondly, Frankie s relationship with himself changed as he felt guilty for what he had ... With the onset of this stage, new skills emerge such as hypothetical deductive reasoning. • 14. Kaluza Klein Theory and Higher Dimensions Kaluza Klein Theory and Higher Dimensions I. Introduction Human civilization has always been characterized by our ceaseless curiosity and awe for what we do not comprehend. Our wonder for what lies beyond the scope of our daily lives has been the driving force for innovation and advancement. The intensity of our fascination for what lie beyond is consummately personified in the late astrologer and philosopher Giordano Bruno(1548 1600). Captivated by gazing into the night sky, Bruno dreamed of a homogenous universe(reference to phy 312) with a multitude suns with earth like planets rotating about them just like our own solar system. Publicly hailed a heretic, Bruno was rejected from scientific and religious communities alike. Even after being excommunicated by three different churches and denounced at Oxford University, Bruno held on tight to his beliefs. His ideas would eventually lead him to the stake where he was burned to death on charges of heresy and opposing the catholic faith. Bruno s death served as indispensable sacrifice for modern day cosmology and our scientific community. It ultimately marked the beginning of humanity s questioning of whether our world is actually what tradition tells us. Whether if it was Einstein questioning Newton s long held laws of motions or Bohr questioning Einstein s beliefs on quantum mechanics, history has repeatedly shown that curiosity about what we do not know is integral towards the advancement of science. They have profound effetc s on the social and psychological well being of their family and friends. In the normal course of fetal development, cells migrate to their appropriate destination so that organs and limbs form where they should. Usually, the genes perform flawlessly, but mistakes can and do occur. Some of the most common birth defetc s results from the interaction between one or two abnormal genes out of 100,000 that make up who we are. Mutations causing birth defetc s are not the result of a single gene but, have some genetic components in their causation. Therefore certain birth defetc s are prone to occur repeatedly in families but, not to be considered purely genetic such as spina bifida. Other causes of birth disorders are causes from drug and alcohol abuse while pregnant. When a woman uses drugs during pregnancy, she is not only damaging her health, but also that of her unborn child. The most harmful drugs are those classified as narcotics ( cocaine ,heroin etc ). Other harmful substance include alcohol, tobacco and caffeine. A women s inter uterine environment is designed to protetc the fetus from external injury and to assure proper nutrition. Although, most people with autism do develop language skills, they are generally not at a level of a typically developing person and the progress of their language development is usually slow and irregular. An example of the irregular pattern of speech development seen in autism is Echolalia. Some estimates say that 85% of those with autism spectrum disorder who are verbal with show Echolalia in some form. (Teach Me to Talk, 2008) There are two types of echolalia. Immediate echolalia and delayed echolalia. Immediate echolalia occurs when the child echoes the words immediately after another says them. Delayed echolalia is when a child repeats the words or phrases long after they were originally said. This can occur days, weeks, or even months later. Another example of irregular speech development is prosody. Webster dictionary defines prosody as the rhythm and pattern of the sounds of language. Some people with autism may know the correct vocabulary to use but are unable to use a correct tone of voice. Not only are they unable to use prosody, but they are not able to detect its use others. In the Sumer civilization they lived on a flat plain with few mountains to buffer them from invasion and relied on an unpredictable twin river system. By living and working in cities, we achieve a higher standard of living but also put up with pollution, noise and congestion. (O Sullivan, 2012) Megacities are large and highly dynamic systems, and represent concentrated sites of human life as well as ecological stress and pollution. Due to the combination of pollution and stress as neighbourhoods grow in size and their resource capacity, the transformation in social environmental relations is also observed. Over time more local environmental hazards associated with inadequate services and sanitation is being replaced by risks that accrue at the city scale. Most megacities are important nodes in the production of pollution and greenhouse emissions which have negative impacts on populations at regional and also global scales. Historically coastal megacities have recorded some of the highest economic losses due to disaster events but megacities are also the centres of capacity, ingenuity and resources. The management of hazards, vulnerability and environmental management in megacities is very complex, and governance responses require special attention to the multiple scales of impact. A Vanished World Chris Lowney Summary A Vanished World by Chris Lowney Book Report A vanished World written by Chris Lowney chronicles the daily life of the Jews, Muslims and Christians, living in the Muslim kingdoms in Medieval Spain. He covers different spectrum of this world that was torn by religious antagonism. In Medieval Spain, in the medieval Spanish villages Muslims, Christians, and Jews rubbed shoulders on a daily basis. They shared irrigation system, bathhouses, municipal ovens, and marketplaces. But they created a system that made everything work efficiently. Medieval Spaniards introduced Europeans to paper manufacture, Hindu Arabic numerals, philosophical classics, algebra, citrus fruits, cotton, and new medical techniques. More astonishing than Spain s wide ranging accomplishments, however, was the simple fact that until the destruction of the last Muslim Kingdom by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella in 1492, Spain s Muslims, Christians, and Jews often managed to bestow tolerance and freedom of worship on the minorities in their midst. A Vanished World chronicles this panoramic sweep of human history and achievement, encompassing both the agony of Jihad, Crusades, and Inquisition, and the glory of a multi religious, multi cultural civilization that forever changed the West. • 31. Victorian Era Research Paper The Victorian Era started with Queen Victoria s rule from June 20, 1837 to her death on January 22, 1901. The Victorian Era primarily describes a period of English history, where Britain saw a rise in industrialization, growth in the economy, growth of the middle class, growth of a large population, and a large scale expansion of imperial power. The society was extremely conservative and patriarchal. There was an idea called the Cult of Domesticity that believed that a woman s identity should consist of piety, purity, domesticity, and submissiveness. However, this era saw the birth and rise of political and social movements such as socialism, liberalism, and organized feminism. Because of the rapid changes that occurred during the Victorian Era, it brought out rapid changes in literature. The most popular topics for Victorian Era novels were industrialization, class, science vs. religion, progress, utilitarianism, the role of women in society, and how to live an ideal life. This era also saw an increase of works in a large variety of subjects such as scientific works, philosophy, nature writing, and Gothic tales. Early Victorian works, emphasized the notion of what is English or what constitutes an Englishman . This is mostly due to how conservative the society was. Later Victorian works rebelled against these ideas. The novel became the most popular form of literature during the Victorian Era. Many of them were originally serialized. Many novels during this era helped develop our current popular genres such as fantasy and science fiction. There was a rise in female novelists, but they went under male pseudonyms because of how male patriarchal the society was and female writers were often shunned. The most popular writer of this time was Charles Dickens. The Bronte sisters wrote many significant works, but they were not appreciated by Victorian critics. Others famous writers include: William Thackeray, who wrote Vanity Fair Thomas Hardy, who wrote Far from the Madding Crowd Oscar Wilde, who wrote The Picture of Dorian Gray George Eliot (Mary Anne Evans), who wrote Middlemarch Charles Dickens was the most famous Victorian novelist. • 44. Phaedrus Essay Purposely difficult and intentionally obsessive, Plato s Phaedrus is an exceedingly difficult read that defies all conventional logic as a piece of discourse. The text is extremely subjective, open to interpretation and individual creativity as to what or whom the narrative is about. Written by Plato, a close disciple of Socrates, this text is set along the Illissus river where Phaedrus and Socrates meet for a day of speech, debate, rhetoric and okay...flirting. Phaedrus leads of the day and recites a speech by his close friend Lysias, who Phaedrus considers to be a top speechmaker. Socrates then, after chiding by Phaedrus unleashes two speeches of his own that overshadow and refute Lysias claim so boldly that Phaedrus is so taken by the ... We, on our part, must prove that such madness is given by the gods for our greatest happiness; and our proof will not be accepted by the merely clever, but will accepted by the truly wise (469). It is my intention with this quote to show the crucial relationship between madness and the evolution of higher thought. I argue very plainly for this correlation linking the truly wise and madness because it demonstrates Socrates attempt to dangle an idea in front of Phaedrus, who after Socrates 1st speech was expecting a philosophical, structured way of defining the soul and now left to wonder what madness has to do with anything. The quote defends the claim that madness is an essential part of Socrates attempt to persuade Phaedus (the reader) that madness is not something bad; the way Lysias outlined it in his speech, but an obligatory element in developing a passion for something. My discourse has shown that this is, of all inspirations, the best and of the highest origin to him who has it or who shares in this madness, is called a lover (483). Taken from Socrates 2nd speech, Socrates is using madness now on a different level, this time as tool to describe inspiration to be a lover. Socrates literally cites his entire speech to explain how madness leads to love; to passion, not just an evolution of thinking, but also a pursuit of how it manifests itself through madness. It is the madness that I consider ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 45. Roald Dahl s The Landlady Roald Dahl s realistic fiction story, The LandLady, takes place at a bed and breakfast owned by the landlady where she also lives. Billy Weaver, a seventeen year old guy, was looking for a place to stay, and he walks by the landlady s house. He was going to keep walking when a sign suddenly caught his eye and next thing he knew, he was ringing the doorbell. By using sentence variety with lots of description, Roald Dahl creates the lesson that it is essential to be aware and conscientious of one s immediate surroundings. Throughout the story, the lack of awareness and being conscientious is a central issue that affects all of the characters. Bill Weaver lacks an awareness of what is going on throughout the story and he is not being cautious ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Throughout the story, Billy is not aware and conscientious of his immediate surroundings. When Billy is walking down the street and sees the landlady s sign, he seems to be drawn into the house. BED AND BREAKFAST, it said. BED AND BREAKFAST, BED AND BREAKFAST. Each word was like a large black eye staring at him through the glass. These words are holding him compelling him forcing him to stay where he was and not to walk away from that house (2). This does not even make Billy have the slightest doubt about anything. Dahl uses the sensory detail of sight to draw in the reader to the sign as it did to Billy when Billy keeps repeating what the sign said over and over again. Dahl not only uses sensory detail as a craft to develop his ideas, but he also uses sentence variety with lots of description through his story. Dahl describing how Billy is being drawn to go to the house shows his craft for developing his ideas. Billy found himself automatically starting forward into the house. The compulsion or, more accurately, the desire to follow after her into that house was extraordinarily strong (2). The way Dahl describes how Billy is feeling the desire to follow the lady really helps the reader imagine and almost feel the urge that he is. With Dahl s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
