By statute, African Americans received the basic civil rights to make and enforce contracts; to acquire,
hold, and dispose of property; and to equal applications of criminal laws in 1866. These rights were

DuBois in this situation would argue that African Americans feel a widespread feeling of dislike for
his blood, which keeps him and his children out of decent employment, from certain public
conveniences and amusements, from hiring houses in many sections... and from being recognized as a

overwhelming amount of African American males die before they reach the age set forth by the
government to receive Social Security disbursement, yet are still required to pay in the same amount
as every other hard working American. When the Social Security act of 1935 was passed, sixty to
seventy percent of African Americans were excluded from receiving benefits based on occupation
alone. The occupations excluded were the ones in which women and African Americans were most
