Dr. Ben Carson Essay
Doctor, there is a great deal of blood loss! We need to stabilize the patients and give them more
anesthetic! Many orders bounced around the operating room as the first conjoined twin separation
occurred. A slight movement to the right may rupture a blood vessel. A slight movement to the left
may breach a vein. Each move was paramount in the completion of the surgery. After 16 hours of
gargantuan pressure, the surgery was deemed a success. One may say that Dr. Ben Carson was
destined for success from an early age when in reality his childhood pushed him towards being a
model of the typical African American male stereotype. Every man has a profound story to tell. The
story of Dr. Ben Carson is one that consists of many hardships and accomplishments. ... Show more

Benjamin Carson has had a tremendous impact on the choices that I have made in life so far. When I
was in the eighth grade I wanted to be a neurosurgeon because I was inspired what Dr. Carson had
done. After conducting a few projects based around the brain, I decided that neurology was not for me.
When I was in 9th grade I had a chance to meet Dr. Carson. I told him that I wanted to be a
neurosurgeon at first, but then I obtained a growing interest in oncology. Dr. Carson told me to follow
my passion. From that point until today I have been following my passion of doing cancer research. I
have obtained two pending publications with scientist throughout the country. I have also received top

Nose Cone Lab
What nose cone allows the rocket to go the highest? Grant, Tyrone and Knobloch, Niklaus Crestwood
JH, Cresco IA The purpose of our experiment was to find out what nose cone would work the best for
our rocket. Our hypothesis was that the ogive nose cone shape would work the best to eliminate drag.
To do our experiment we had 5 different nose cones and tested them on a rocket three times each
measuring how high the rocket went each time with an altimeter. The nose cone that we found worked
the best was the conical nose cone. The ones that were the worst were the blunt and ogive having only
a small difference between the average height flown. The conical nose cone was the only nose cone
that had any significant difference and was barely one

Introduction. Anterograde Amnesia Is The Inability To Form
Introduction
Anterograde amnesia is the inability to form new memories, while keeping old memories intact.
People who suffer from this impairment, are unable to encode new memories into long term memory
but are able to keep them in short term. The movie Fifty First Dates portrays this type of amnesia
accurately and inaccurately. The main protagonists of Fifty First Dates are Lucy, played by Drew
Barrymore, and Henry, played by Adam Sandler. Lucy suffers from anterograde amnesia due to brain
damage. For the most part, the movie is accurate to the impairment and is almost exactly the same as
the impairment patients suffer from.

Procedural memory is usually memories associated with muscle memory where her body remembers
it even if she does not. This is also true to the type of amnesia. She even dreams about Adam Sandler s
character even though she is not sure how she knows him. Somehow, her encounters with him are
encoded even though she doesn t remember them explicitly.
A Real Life Example: FL and Similarities from the Movie
What is most interesting is that the movie seems to be based off of a real incident. Smith et. al (2010)
wrote about a special case of a patient named FL. She was in a car accident in 2005 and reported
difficulty retaining information from one day to the next. She describes her memory as unaffected
over the course of the day but when she falls asleep, the memory for each day disappears. FL also, is
able to recall things from before her accident. Lucy, a fictional character created for a movie, shares
many things in common with FL, thus showing that the film is accurate to the disorder. It also is
interesting to know that FL like Lucy was somehow able to remember something s. According to
Smith et. al (2010), For some tests, unbeknownst to FL, material learned on the previous day was
intermixed with material learned on the same day as the test. In other words, FL sometimes mixed in
previously learned material that she did not recall learning due to her impairment with material that
she learned that day. This idea of intermixing material was also accurate

Personnel Selection Process Essay
Question 1: What strengths and what shortcomings do you see in the newly developed multinational
personnel selection system? Strength 1: Levels of content validity in application tests. In the
application process, tests such as the group exercise and the panel interview provide a high level of
consistency between the test items or problems, and the kinds of situations or problems that a
candidate might find themselves in when on the job. This is known as content validity. By being able
to control the scenario in which the employee finds themselves in, such as in the group exercise, the
staff in charge of the process are able to have a clear idea of the way they want ideal applicants to

Why Is Employee Training A Waste Of Time
The article, Why Your Employee Training Is A Waste Of Time And Money And What To Do About It ,
by Christo Popov seeks to address how training of employees is expensive and worthless to the
company and how it does not increase performance. The research problem being addressed is whether
employee training is a waste of time and money and if the company is selecting the right personnel in
the critical skills for the business`s stage of development and what are the shortfalls of the program.
It is clear from the title of the article that this is no simple issue. In fact, the article`s can be misleading
at a glance. The author starts by saying that companies that are up to present codes of practice will
beat their competition in the present day, however in order to do this the company has to learn quickly
and it cost the company more in 2014 to financially to do this.
SUMMARY ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The author speaks from personal training and development experience and lists the following as
common problems: no strategic focus to training, not being useful and interesting, and training in long
marathon sessions rather than short bites. In addition, fixes to these common problems are discussed.
First, organizations should plan first and train later. Creating a strategy and execution plan will ensure
core skills and competencies will be addressed. Next, organizations may consider finding trainers that
have actually worked in the field they are training for. Other fixes discussed include: plan for sprints,
not a marathon, road test the training, and spend less, not more. These suggestions can help companies

Parker s Back And A Rose For Emily Analysis
Narrative Point of View in Parker s Back and A Rose For Emily An author s use of narrative point of
view has a significant impact on the presentation and interpretation of a text. The choice of a first
person narrative, for instance, will create a viewpoint that is substantially different in comparison to a
third person narrative. In Parker s Back, Flannery O Connor uses a third person limited point of view.
Faulkner s A Rose For Emily employs a first person point of view. In Parker s Back, the third person
limited narrative allows the author to take an objective, analytical view of Parker that allows the
reader to understand the protagonist s psychology; in A Rose For Emily, the reader s knowledge of
Miss Emily is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the same way that the eyes of the tattoo make Parker feel transparent, the third person limited
narration also makes Parker transparent to the reader by allowing the reader to access Parker s
thoughts and feelings. Parker likes to maintain control over what is seen and known about him; this is
clear in the fact that all of his previous tattoos have been on the front of his body: He had no desire for
one anywhere he could not readily see it himself (Kennedy and Gioia 430). On a more abstract level,
Parker keeps his real name a secret and goes only by his initials; his first real act of intimacy with
Sarah Ruth is to share his name: Obadiah Elihue. The third person limited point of view, therefore,
allows the reader to do what both the eyes of Christ in the tattoo and Parker s wife do: to see Parker as
he really is, not as he pretends to be. In contrast to the third person limited point of view in Parker s
Back, the point of view in A Rose For Emily is the first person. The narrator s exact identity; the first
line refers to our whole town, implying that s/he is a towns person and neighbor. In fact, the narrator is
never specified as one, single person; the pronouns our and we seem to indicate that the narrator
consists of several people, or even the town as a collective whole. Rather than being told by a narrator
who is outside of the story, and therefore objective, the first person nature of this narrator

Raphael Research Paper
Raffaello Sanzio, known as Raphael, was an Italian painter and architect born in the mountain town of
Urbino. In his early years, Raphael was trained by his father Giovanni Santi, a court painter and
versifier, allowing him to gain a wide education in the arts, literature, and social skills. This enabled
Raphael to move easily amongst the higher circles of court society and this helped him gain
recognition. His career falls naturally into three phases and three styles, first described by Giorgio
Vasari: his early years in Umbria, then a period of about four years (from 1504 1508) absorbing the
artistic traditions of Florence, followed by his last hectic and triumphant twelve years in Rome,
working for two Popes and their close associates. (Raphael Biography)
Raphael s mother Màgia died in 1491, followed by his father in 1494 causing him to become orphaned
at the age of eleven. He was left under the supervision of his paternal uncle, Bartolomeo. This is of
course, when he wasn t serving as an apprentice to a master. He had already shown talent, according to
Giorgio Vasari, who tells that Raphael had been a great help to his father . In these years he developed

was engaged in the greatest solo project of the Renaisssance, the painting of the Sistine chapel.

project of such high religious significance. This began one of the greatest artistic rivalries of all time

Summary Of Amy Tan s Rules Of The Game

Americans more readily give this credit to an individual s own efforts and talents. Implicit in this
mother daughter struggle is a conflict contrasting Asian values, which emphasize familial and

to pursue chess as a passion creates a cultural divide between her and her mother. Meimei veers
toward American behavior as she pursues chess. Tan has her approach the game in a classically
American fashion, the result of which is a classic American success story. First Meimei watches her

fundamental strategies in library books, looking up words she doesn t know, even drawing a
chessboard and staring at it for hours. She accosts an old man playing in the park and convinces him
to mentor her. She gives up social activities to study chess theory. In this way, she becomes a national
champion and gets her picture on the cover of Life magazine. This is, in fact, the embodiment of the
American Dream: no matter where you come from, if you have the smarts, take initiative, and work

Beyond Analysis Of The Book Beyond The River Chebar Essay
Beyond the River Chebar
Young Hoon (John) Kim
This book, Beyond the River Chebar, is a collection of articles that talks about the kingship and
eschatology in Ezekiel. Block wants to show the proper interpretation of the book of Ezekiel by
providing different views on the interpretation of certain passages and different theological views.
Moreover, Block provides history and other aspects for the better understanding of the book of
Ezekiel.
Daniel Block starts by introducing Zion theology. Zion theology is the Israelites religious attitude
toward Jerusalem. Scholars recognize some Israelites thoughts regarding to the Zion Theology. First,
since worshipping of Yahweh at the national temple in Jerusalem, the Israelites thought that the deity s
enthronement is a central feature. Second, since the Location of the temple is on the peak of Zaphon,
they assume that Zion is the center of the universe. Last, The election of Zion by YHWH is closely
tied to the election of David. From Zion Yahweh s reign of peace and justice extends to the entire
world.
Additionally, Yahweh s kingship, which is the one of the core aspects of the Zion Theology, has poor
evidences in Ezekiel s ministry. The word malak has been used to refer to Yahweh once (Ezek. 20:33).
However, the context does not provide any element that has to do with the enthronement of Yahweh.
In second chapter, the author deals with the royal ideology in Ezekiel. Block briefly talks about the
history of Israel s monarchy

Social Norm In Moby Dick
All men live enveloped in whale lines. All are born with halters round their necks; but it is only when
caught in the swift, sudden turn of death, that mortals realize the silent, subtle, ever present perils of
life. (Melville, 1851) The creation of Moby Dick was a significant turning point for American
literature. Melville s application of intense symbolism, challenging themes, and extraordinary
allusions contrast with that of typical American writings of that time. In fact, many Americans rejected
the novel due to the fact Moby Dick explicates realism that many Americans neglected to comprehend
in the 19th century; many Americans were not aware the immoral social norms they practiced. In this
way, Melville utilized Moby Dick as an allegory ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Additionally, Melville addressed allusions to Greek Mythology including the three Fates who
conducted the strings of life and destiny. In Moby Dick, the crew seized destiny into their own hands;
however, in the end, life and death were augured by the harpoon ropes. Ahab stooped to clear it; he did
clear it; but the flying turn caught him round the neck, and voicelessly as Turkish mutes bowstring
their victim, he was shot out of the boat, ere the crew knew he was gone. Next instant, the heavy eye
splice in the rope s final end flew out of the stark empty tub, knocked down an oarsman, and smiting
the sea, disappeared in its depths. (Melville, 1851) Despite the attempt of the crew, they were not the
deciders of fate. On the other hand, this was similar to Americans at the time. Americans used God to
justify their iniquities including treatment of races and expansion. As stated previously, America s
justified the Manifest Destiny as God s word; thus, generating a strong sense of nationalism.
Americans concluded God constructed them as the superior nation, and many Americans grew
audacious. In fact, many felt America should only be for Americans, not foreign immigrants. Some
went as far as violence to voice their opinion, similar to Ahabd s revenge against the whale. At the
same time, Americans also removed Native Americans and enslaved African Americans. Needless to
say,

Otto Von Bismarck s Triple Alliance During World War I
The countries of Europe formed various alliances with each other in the years leading up to World War
I, eventually splitting the continent in two. Otto von Bismarck was instrumental in forming many of
these alliances in an attempt to keep the European Concert together. He was eventually dismissed by
Kaiser Wilhelm II, but would still accurately predict the beginning of the first international war.
Initially, the Triple Alliance was a defensive pact between Germany, Austria Hungary, and Italy. It
guaranteed mutual support in event of an attack by another power. The Triple Entente, between
Britain, Russia, France, was a treaty in direct response to the Triple Alliance. It was a series of mutual
defense pacts that was to stay in place for the duration of the Triple Alliance. If a member of the Triple
Alliance attacked a member of the Triple Entente, the members of the Triple Entente could attack the
aggressor and the allies of the aggressor once they attacked. Going back a bit, Otto von Bismarck s
greatest diplomatic achievement, the Reinsurance Treaty, was a treaty between Germany Russia
guaranteeing they would remain neutral in a war unless Germany attacked France or Russia attacked

The Triple Alliance was initially a strength, offering protection to a weak Austro Hungarian Empire
and Italy. However, the fear it generated in countries such as Russia, Britain, France (future Triple

between the opposing sides that would go to fight the war to end all wars. When Kaiser Wilhelm II let
the Reinsurance Treaty expire, Germany now had two enemies, one to the east and one to the west.
The Triple Entente of 1907 was intended to increase security between Britain, Russia, and France. The
treaty failed to do this in the end, only heightening the arms race which would ultimately lead to

on the Fourth of July. This raises curiosity about security during the holiday and if we will all be safe.
I believe that everyone, at the time, was worried about there safety and anyone would have chose this
topic to do research on since it was still in the public eye. I learned quite a bit about the psychological
impact of the Boston Marathon Bombing. After researching the effects, I realized how much trauma
these innocent people went through during a moment that was supposed to be joyous. People that were
healthy and filled with life were either severely injured or had there life taken away by a senseless act.
Some of the injured victims will never be able to walk again, others, never able to see their loved ones

Nurture Plays a More Dominant Role in Human s Development...
Humans are unique and intricate creatures and their development is a complex process. It is this
process that leads people to question, is a child s development influenced by genetics or their
environment? This long debate has been at the forefront of psychology for countless decades now and
is better known as Nature versus Nurture . The continuous controversy on whether or not children
develop their psychological attributes based on genetics (nature) or the way in which they have been
raised (nurture) has pondered the minds of psychologists for years. Through thorough experiments,
studies, and discussions however, it is easy to see that nurture is far more important in the
development of a human than nature.
The Nature versus Nurture argument can be traced back many millenniums ago. In 350 B.C.,
philosophers asked the same question on human behaviour. Plato and Aristotle were two philosophers
that each had two diverse views on the matter. Plato believed that knowledge and behaviour were due
to inherent factors, but environmental factors still played a role in the equation. Conversely, Aristotle
had different views. He believed in the idea of Tabula Rasa .
The Blank Slate theory supported the nurture side of the argument and believed that everyone was
born with a Tabula Rasa , Latin for Blank Slate . He proposed that people learn and acquire ideas from
external forces or the environment . In other words, he believed that the mind is a blank slate and it is

Kindness Reflection
Your book has significantly changed my view of the kindness in our society. Kindness is like love, it
blooms in some and lingers in others.
I grew up in New Ulm, Minnesota a small town with a deep passion and obsession for their German
heritage with a population of around 13,000. Although with this town, it has a lack of diversity. The
percentage of Caucasians is around 95%, which leaves the remaining 5% to non Caucasians; I am
Chinese and part of that 5% of non Caucasians. Being different here is a challenge, we have the
friendly people that treat us decently, but then we have the people that would give us a look of disgust
or an intrusive stare. Similar to the looks that you got when people were judging you and your yellow

The Novel The New Atlantis By Ursula K. Le Guin
The short story The New Atlantis paints a picture of a dystopian United States, where the government
has become an overwhelming force. The people living in the States are left in a state of neglect, where
harsh administration and forced ideals are the norm. Ursula K. Le Guin s story follows Belle, a
woman who leaves her memoirs to the rising oceans that are swallowing up the continent. Belle s
story records the struggle of a person s life under the suffocating government, with her husband Simon
attempting to gain political strength through his scientific vision. The themes of the story are based on
a damning critique of the direction that humanity along with science and technology have taken under
capitalism (Maxwell 15). With its heavy hand, civilization has consumed itself with conflict and
consumption. By the end of the story, the United States has completely collapsed into the ocean,
collapsed under the weight of its own government. The story The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas
, also by Ursula K. Le Guin, tells the tale of an idealistic city called Omelas. Shoshana Knapp
illustrates the lives of Omelas as a complex moral problem: The basic situation . . . is the promise of
mass bliss in exchange for a unique torment (par. 5). When children become young adults in Omelas,
they are shown a morbid truth about their society the basis of Omelas whole existence relies on the
suffering of one lonely child locked in a room. This dilemma introduces many uncomfortable

about half of them are rented. The rental rates were supposed to be set pretty high, but our RMS
recommends setting it at the same price as a compact. We hedged a little and set the price to about 10

Essay Health Economics
Cost benefit, cost effectiveness and cost utility analyses are forms of economic evaluation which are
useful in health economics for comparing costs and allocating resources. Health economics is widely
relevant to governments and the health sector in implementation of new policy, as it concerns the
allocation of resources in the context of a limited budget, or scarcity . Economic evaluation is a
potential tool for setting priorities in health, though it is only one of many potential criteria, including
overall budget and public attitudes and wants. Economic evaluation is already in use in some settings,
such as in pharmaceutical company proposals for government subsidisation, but there is room for
expansion across the field of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Changing factors such as aging populations and new technologies becoming available are increasing
expectations from people throughout the world, and decision makers must make rational choices to
maximise benefits to population health whilst working with limited resources. Yothasamut et al (2009)
summarise this by observing that health care resources in every setting are always constrained, while
unlimited demand is observed . The best choices in the context of economics are the ones which
maximise utility (individual satisfaction through consumption of goods) and welfare, the sum utility
experienced by all individuals in society. Decision makers often have to seek satisfactory rather than
optimal solutions, also known as working with bounded rationality (Simon 1957 in Williams et al
2008), as it is important to pursue both efficiency and equity in the funding of health care. Therefore,
it may be unsuitable to fund the most cost effective option if it sacrifices the equal distribution of
benefits. Research in health economics can take a normative or positive approach and this reflects the
balance needed between cost control and equity when making economic decisions. Positive economic
research and analysis is concerned with how things are and seeks to explain economic phenomena,
whilst normative economic research and analysis is concerned with how things ought to be and relies

LDCT Screening
According to recent studies at Indiana Universty School of Medicine, alternative methods for
detecting non small cell lung cancer are emerging. The current methods of detecting NSCLC may be
effective, but they are also very expensive. One method called a low dose computed tomography
(LDCT) has been successful in identifying malignant tumors. However, routine LDCT screenings
would result in 1.3 to 2 billion dollars nationally in health care costs annually. Deig, Mendonca, and
Lautenschlaeger suggest that pursuing other methods of screening for NSCLC would significantly
decrease this cost. If screenings could be conducted in a cost efficient and effective manner, then the
expensive LDCT procedure would only have to be conducted for patients who ... Show more content

Biomarkers are natural indicators in the body that respond noticeably to the presence of disease. By
measuring the responses of biomarkers, oncologists detect the cancerous cells before recommending
expensive procedures, rather than immediately resorting to these procedures. One of these biomarkers
that responds to the presence of cancerous cells is microRNA. MicroRNAs are molecules that are
involved in the cell life cycle and therefore the progression of cancerous cells. A study in cancer
patients was conducted to compare the accuracy of screening with microRNAs to screening with
LDCT. Observing microRNAs did not prove to be as accurate at identifying cancer as LDCT, but
since using microRNAs is a less expensive process, it can identify patients that should undergo LCDT
testing. Screening with microRNA testing initially would decrease the number of patients paying for
LCDT testing. Another biomarker that can be observed in response to cancer is ct DNA. Ct DNA
refers to fragments of DNA from tumors found circulating in the blood stream. A recent study
indicated that observing ct DNA could have multiple useful applications for oncologists. Ct DNA
analysis during treatment could serve as an indication of how tumors react to treatment methods and
whether recurrence is likely. Detecting ct DNA in the bloodstream could even serve as an early sign of
cancer, observable before imaging tests even show tumors. However, ct DNA analysis has not yet
proved to be a replacement for LDCT

Poets Explore the Theme of Death in Educating for Leisure,...
Structural techniques play a huge role in many poems due to the fact that structure sometimes reflects
what is happening in the poem. This can clearly be seen with all the poems, in Remember and Do not
go gentle into that good night a strict, tight and ridged structure and this helps reinforce the meaning
that the poets are trying to portray. With Do not go gentle the structure of the poem in some respects
contrasts what is actually happening with Dylan Thomas, with father dying; his head is all over the
place but the structure is tight and strict. Villanelles are very traditional strict structures and the
message that is portrayed through Do not go gentle contrasts it as it is an untraditional message. In

Even though it is not evident we could interpret that the mother in the poem is becoming hysterical
and agitated and due to the fact that her she needs to Carefully part it . This is because the child is, as
we find out later on, is dying. As for the readers, they are anxious due to the fact that Chinua Achebe
slowly drip feeds information to the reader allowing many different interpretations and events to
evolve in the readers mind. As for E for L the lack of strict and ridged structure and the quick
evolution of the structure in some aspects mimic the thought process of the character within the poem.
The character within the poem is psychotic and his mind is all over the place j, on top of that his
killing tendencies and his thirst for murder quickly evolves from a fly to a goldfish to a human just
like structure quickly evolves. This lack of strict poetic structure allows for the poet to get the readers
full attention and for them to grasp the reader and get their message about death across in the most
effective way possible. Finally In The man he killed and Havisham a cyclical structure is used and this
helps reinforce the meaning that the poet is trying to portray. With The man he killed the structure
reinforces the dilemma that the character is facing as he has killed a man; his head is all over the place
but the structure is tight and traditional and this can be seen with the ABAB rhyme scheme. In

The Mentality Of War In Kurt Vonnegut s Slaughterhouse Five
The Mentality of War
Many people think of war hero as a title of honor and glory and therefore perceive war itself as
glorious. But, there are dangerous consequences to serving in war, not only physically but mentally.
Being in such an environment can be traumatic, and leave permanent effects. War can leave scarring
psychological impairments on veterans, causing them to suffer from problems such as personal
insecurities, desensitization to violence, and post traumatic stress disorder.
Serving in war, specifically returning home from war, can cause many psychological impairments and
personal insecurities, such as severe inward shame. For example, The Yellow Birds by Kevin Powers

The movie Dunkirk, directed by Christopher Nolan touches on the idea of how war affects your
mental state and how it can cause you to act irrationally due to PTSD. There is one specific scene in
the movie where a civilian boat rescues a man from the water, but upon hearing that they are heading
to shore to get more soldiers the man goes into a blind rage killing one of the boys on the boat. () The
mere thought of going back to the war sent the man into a full blown mental breakdown where he
wasn t in control of his actions. The stress that he felt about the war affected him so much that it lead
him to hurt a child. That is the severity of what PTSD can do to a person. Likewise, in the excerpt of
The Yellow Birds by Kevin Powers, there is a man is struggling with reentry to civilian life and his
own PTSD. For example, in the excerpt he talks about how the hot air of America is much different
that the air oversees, It was quite unlike the heat in Al Tafar, which had the surprising effect of
reducing one to tears in an instant, even after having spent hours broiling in it already. (p. 131 132).

bring you to tears. The effects and conditions of war take such a mental strain on the soldiers that they

Essay On Abortion In The United States
The topic of abortion in the United States remains one of the most controversial, divisive, and painful
subjects in contemporary society. Traditionally, an abortion is defined as removing or expelling the
fetus from the womb before it is ready for birth. This may comprise spontaneous abortion, which is
often referred to as a miscarriage or induced abortion, in which someone the woman herself, a
layperson, or a doctor purposefully causes the abortion. The term is commonly used to refer to the
induced abortion, and this is the abortion, which has been filled with controversy. In the developed
nations, induced abortion is known to be one of the safest procedures in medicine if it is conducted

procedures performed in the United States annually. According to studies released by the Guttmacher

Columbus Day And The Columbus Day
Christopher Columbus is an Italian navigator who sailed west from Spain in 1492. He was in search
for the Indies(India, China and Japan) through the waters due to hostile armies and long distances on
land. Columbus thought he landed in the Indies when he actually landed in the Bahamas, welcomed in
by the Taino(Native Americans). However, Columbus did not go there to spread Christianity, he
forced the Taino into slavery, looting them, spreading deadly diseases that killed many Natives, and
taking their land (causing other people to come to the Americas). However, Columbus day is
celebrated by Americans thanking Columbus for finding America, but should we celebrate a man for
terrorizing Native Americans? In addition, to all of this chaos, there is a huge debate going on if
Confederate monuments should be allowed to stand or be taken down. These monuments come from
the American Civil War, the North(Union) versus the South(Confederates). The South relied heavily
on agriculture, using slaves to harvest their cotton. Some historians say that the South wanted to keep
slavery, while others say that the South fought mostly for the right to decide their own affairs. Even
though the North won, the South made monuments to make Confederate soldiers be portrayed as
selfless heroes(no monuments have anything about pro slavery). Columbus day should be celebrated
and the Confederate monuments should stay because people cannot forget their history, people respect
these things for different reasons, and people do not know the real reason to why Columbus day and
Confederate monuments are really celebrated for. The Civil War and Columbus finding the Americas
will always be in our history and can never be changed even if we try. Professor Leo Killsback of

Gender And Social Aspects Of The Sexual Revolution In The...
Industrial revolution was the change to new manufacturing process that took place in the 18th to the
19th century. The process involved the change from the use of hands in production to the use of
machines. The examples included the engineering of chemicals and iron productions, use of steam
power and the plant machine method. Due to the developments in the way of production in the
industries, employment especially the textile industry featured both male and female genders
improving the overall living standards of people. Sexual revolution can also be described as sexual
liberation because it was seen as freedom from the traditional codes of behavior to interpersonal
relationships and sexuality (Gill 103). As a result of this there was witnessed several changes in the
general perceptions and traditions held, especially on gender and social stereotypes, which resulted to
sexual liberation. This paper is going to look into industrial revolution and find out the extent to which
it constituted to sexual revolution and the everyday social and family life for both men, women and
the children.
Industrialization took place earlier in the western countries than the other parts of the world. Through
the introduction of machines that made work easier in the industries, employment was no longer a
man s thing and women found an opportunity to work (Carlin 318). The revolution created a shortage
in labor and textile factories absorbed young single ladies from the rural areas. The

Persuasive Speech About Sleep
Wake up. Drown in knowledge for the next seven hours. Eat. Homework. Sleep. Repeat. Does this
sound like you? Wait, that s all of us! For twelve years, the seven hour day at school just seems to get
longer and longer every year. I know, graduation day is laying out at the beach while we suffer
learning about pythagorean theorem. As as much as we despise this thing called school, there are steps
to excel academically, mentally, and emotionally. I think we ve all cried at least once over how
stressful school can be. First of all, we all hear the lectures get enough sleep to be productive the next
day, by our teachers. They aren t lying to you. For instance, my close friend has the idea that if he
stays up the night before until 2:00 AM studying for his test the same morning at 8:00 AM that he will
have a better chance to score better than studying during decent hours. Come to find out, he could
hardly keep his eyes open during the two hour exam even if he chugged a venti caramel macchiato
from Starbucks. Even if you put the book under your pillow at night, that won t work either to retain
information. According to SleepFoundation, the proper amount of sleep consists of 7 9 hours for the
certain age group. Sleep is vital because it rejuvenates our organs, especially our brain. Guess what
my friend did after his test? He slept for four hours straight. Although we are all guilty of
procrastination, it cause stress for forcing our brain to work increasingly faster and

Why Is Mommy Important To Me
Jeremy In the song Jeremy we read, listened, and watched a song about a kid. The 3 tones were all
different and I will explain them to you. As on is sad. The other one is exciting. The last one is even
more depressing then the other 3. So I will explain to you why these are now. The first tone is us
reading the lyrics simply. The lyrics tone was sad because when you read the song, some of it says I
remember picking on the boy and Daddy didn t give attention to the fact mommy didn t care. These
are only 2 of the several song quotes that make it sad. As in 2 problems are the parents are neglecting
their child, and he is being bullied by reading it. So the mood is sad for this. Now the second one is
listening to the music, when the singer says the lyrics he makes it sound exciting. As he is saying it
with excitement, making us all excited as well. So this Defeats the point of the sad tone in reading it.

The Effects Of Media And Stereotypes On Women
Women Leaders and
The Effects of Media and Stereotypes Confidence, integrity, purpose, empowerment, determination,
and courage. These are some of the many words associated with leadership. Regardless of gender,
these words apply to all leaders. It is no longer a question of what women leaders are, but rather why
there are not women leaders. Today s society focuses on fulfilling leadership positions with males, not
because females do not have the same skills and knowledge as men, but because people associate men
with leaders. There are various daily obstacles that women face in the attempt towards leadership roles
including prejudice beliefs, resistance due to stereotypes, leadership styles, family life demands and
underinvestment in social capital. We have found that through depictions in the media, women are not
seen as effective leaders in the same sense as men. These media findings and various research
techniques provide evidence for the lack of female presence in leadership positions.
Media Review
As part of our research, we Googled different images associated with women and leadership. When
you Google women leaders, what do you see? Countless images of beautiful women appear. Women
have always had to walk a fine line when it comes to their femininity in the workforce. If a woman is
too girly , she is looked down upon. When a woman is too masculine , she is looked down upon.

Descriptive Essay About A Hot Air Balloon
Hot Air Balloon One day I was just sitting at home while I was thinking about what to do, it was
during thanksgiving so it was not only me thinking about what to do at the time. My whole family and
I would usually do something fun for thanksgiving after we ate our thanksgiving dinner and talked and
everything like that. I then had an idea that I had been wanting to do for a while but I didn t want to
say it because I knew nobody would want to do it except me. But then I was getting scared about the
idea I had myself; the idea I had was to go in a hot air balloon. I don t really know why but I suddenly
had the courage to just tell them that I thought it was a good idea to go in a hot air balloon. I was
expecting everyone to basically laugh at me and say no right when I said it, but I got a totally different
reaction then I thought. My entire family liked the idea to go do it but they all said they were to
scared, but we could still go because they said it would be really cool to watch me do it and anybody
else that wanted to go up in the hot air balloon. So, before I could basically even try to get over my
own fear of going up in the hot air balloon we were already on our way there. The best thing about it
was is that where the hot air balloon place was, people that we knew worked there so not only did we
get to go there in the first place. Now we go to do it for free, and I ll tell you what to go in a hot air
balloon is not cheap. So basically, this idea I had that I thought was never going to happen was
happening right in front of my eyes. So after about a 20 30 minute car ride to the hot air balloon lift
off place; we finally arrived. When we finally got there and all of my family got to the place to lift off
we had to talk about all of the rules. The rule that probably scared me the most was how you could not
move around a lot because the basket you had to stand in. The basket was able to break if there was
too much weight or there was too much movement and just other stuff that is possible. Also, another
really scary thing I had to do before getting in the hot air balloon was to basically sign a waiver saying
that if something goes wrong and I die it s not their fault. But even though with all

Foreshadowing In The Tell Tale Heart
The Tell Tale Heart is a famous horror fiction by Edgar Allan Poe. Poe is regarded as an important
writer of suspense and terror tales. His stories are often composed of dark and terrifying atmosphere,
and The Tell Tale Heart is also expressing terror with the story of an insane man killing the old man
pitilessly. The narrator plans to kill the old man because of his vulture eye. He cruelly kills the old
man and buries him under the floor. In the story, the intense feeling is created through setting, skill of
foreshadowing and irony. First of all, the dark setting of the old man s room manifests terror in the
story. His room was as black as pitch with the thick darkness (for the windows were close fastened,
through fear of robbers), and so I knew that he could not see the opening of the door, .... (56 59). The
author directly portrays the dark scene of the old man s room as black pitch, and the word thick
emphasizes the deepness of the dark. The fact that the old man could see nothing because there s no
light makes the readers feel anxious. People depend on the light for their own protection, and they
instinctively feel fear when it gets dark around ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I heard all things in the heaven and in the earth. I heard many things in hell. (5 6). It is a delusion that
one can hear all things in the heaven and hell, but the narrator insists that he can hear those things.
This proves that the narrator is insane and makes readers get curious about the reason for the narrator s
insistence. If we think simply, heaven and hell are the main elements that are indicating death, so it is
logical to predict death in the story. Death is a main subject of horror and it creates a heavy
atmosphere in the story. Heavy atmosphere and the growing tension of death causes the emotion of
fear. In addition to foreshadowing, this story contains one more powerful constituent for the

The Problem Of White Collar Crime
White collar crime is a problem that we do not really see the full extent of; Geis and Stotland (1980)
present the argument that the seriousness of victimisation caused by many corporations is much
greater than that caused by common crimes however the public seem much less interested and
concerned with white collar crime. Some traditional criminological theories have attempted to prove
that white collar crime is not a different and separate phenomenon to common, every day crime.
Robert Merton s Strain Theory is applied to everyday crime, however his theory was in fact set up as
an economic theory that he believed could explain all types of corporate crimes as well as traditional
crimes. Gottfredson and Hirschi also provided what they understood to be a General Theory of Crime
with Control Theory, which they also believed to be relevant to both white collar and traditional
crimes. I am going to discuss these theories in detail and show how they do, and do not provide
sufficient explanations of white collar crimes. I am also going to include Organizational Theory in my
discussion which looks at the issue of understanding crime in a different way. Traditional theories such
as strain theory and control theory form a certain understanding of the issue, on the contrary some
argue that these theories are not appropriate and need twisting to fit the issue, some suggesting a
completely separate way of thinking is needed to understand white collar and corporate crime.

Eugenics In Erskine Caldwell s Tobacco Road
Eugenics in Tobacco Road
Introduction
It is almost impossible to think that there was a time in American history where eugenics was
something that a large mass of the public thought was actually a great idea. But, when it comes time to
face reality, one must realize that this was not just a fabled tale of time of the past and that it actually
happened. When researching historical events or movements, nothing is more beneficial to find
evidence than through popular literature of the specific time period. The novel that sums up what this
entire movement is about the best would be Erskine Caldwell s Tobacco Road.
Even though, to the naked eye, the story just seems to be a classic twentieth century American tale of
drama, theft, and individual differences between the demographics represented, it is clear that, when
analyzed, there is something much more deep and dark than one may initially see when first opening
the novel. One can theorize that Erskine Caldwell, who actively supported eugenics in the midst of its
rising popularity in pre war United States, wrote Tobacco Road as a means of promoting the accepted
legislation of compulsory sterilization ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Let s take a look at a famous scene from the book. Upon Lov s return from town, having just bought
fresh turnips, Lov tries to avoid the Lester family. He does so because of the suspicious nature of
Jeeter, knowing full well that he would make an attempt to steal the turnips. Lov, keeping his distance
at the edge of the yard, discusses his marriage problems with Jetter. During this discussion, Erskine
describes Ellie May s attempt at seduction by ...forcing herself upon her sister s husband, Lov, and
then having an orgasm in the yard while her family and black men, a group whom eugenicists would

undiagnosed pleural lesions. Exudative pleural effusions are frequently encountered in pulmonary

inconclusive and malignancy is suspected [8]. The clinical findings in this study were consistent with
Sahn et al. [9] who found that shortness of breath and chest pain were the most common symptoms in
pleural effusion. Also, Dhital et al. [10] reported that the most common clinical symp toms were in the

Economic Systems, Capitalism And Socialism
Economic Systems
People can use economic systems to build empires and destroy civilizations. The society s featured in
the books 1984 by George Orwell and Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury did just that. Both took
advantage of some form of an economic system to achieve their respective goals. Whether it be the
command economy of Oceania, or the overly consumerist economy of the dystopian United States,
they both employed economics to their benefit. Economics is the science of scarcity. Scarcity is when
you have a population with unlimited wants coupled with limited resources. Economics deals with the
production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services. An economic system is how a
society deals with these factors. The three main questions that an economic system is supposed to
answer are what will we produce? how will we produce it? who gets it? Answer these questions and
you have an economic system (Hettige). This report will cover the two main economic systems,
capitalism and socialism.
Capitalism
Capitalism promotes private ownership of the means of production, or resources, to produce goods
and services for profit. In other terms, private entities purchase resources; be it labor, natural
resources, or factories to create goods to sell for profit. Capitalism promotes that people build up their
own wealth and that all, or most, available resources be privately owned. Production in capitalism is
controlled by supply and demand and individuals purchase products on

  • 2. Dr. Ben Carson Essay Doctor, there is a great deal of blood loss! We need to stabilize the patients and give them more anesthetic! Many orders bounced around the operating room as the first conjoined twin separation occurred. A slight movement to the right may rupture a blood vessel. A slight movement to the left may breach a vein. Each move was paramount in the completion of the surgery. After 16 hours of gargantuan pressure, the surgery was deemed a success. One may say that Dr. Ben Carson was destined for success from an early age when in reality his childhood pushed him towards being a model of the typical African American male stereotype. • 4. Introduction. Anterograde Amnesia Is The Inability To Form Introduction Anterograde amnesia is the inability to form new memories, while keeping old memories intact. People who suffer from this impairment, are unable to encode new memories into long term memory but are able to keep them in short term. The movie Fifty First Dates portrays this type of amnesia accurately and inaccurately. The main protagonists of Fifty First Dates are Lucy, played by Drew Barrymore, and Henry, played by Adam Sandler. Lucy suffers from anterograde amnesia due to brain damage. For the most part, the movie is accurate to the impairment and is almost exactly the same as the impairment patients suffer from. A Real Life Example: FL and Similarities from the Movie What is most interesting is that the movie seems to be based off of a real incident. Smith et. al (2010) wrote about a special case of a patient named FL. She was in a car accident in 2005 and reported difficulty retaining information from one day to the next. She describes her memory as unaffected over the course of the day but when she falls asleep, the memory for each day disappears. FL also, is able to recall things from before her accident. Lucy, a fictional character created for a movie, shares many things in common with FL, thus showing that the film is accurate to the disorder. It also is interesting to know that FL like Lucy was somehow able to remember something s. According to Smith et. al (2010), For some tests, unbeknownst to FL, material learned on the previous day was intermixed with material learned on the same day as the test. In other words, FL sometimes mixed in previously learned material that she did not recall learning due to her impairment with material that she learned that day. Parker s Back And A Rose For Emily Analysis Narrative Point of View in Parker s Back and A Rose For Emily An author s use of narrative point of view has a significant impact on the presentation and interpretation of a text. The choice of a first person narrative, for instance, will create a viewpoint that is substantially different in comparison to a third person narrative. In Parker s Back, Flannery O Connor uses a third person limited point of view. Faulkner s A Rose For Emily employs a first person point of view. In the same way that the eyes of the tattoo make Parker feel transparent, the third person limited narration also makes Parker transparent to the reader by allowing the reader to access Parker s thoughts and feelings. Parker likes to maintain control over what is seen and known about him; this is clear in the fact that all of his previous tattoos have been on the front of his body: He had no desire for one anywhere he could not readily see it himself (Kennedy and Gioia 430). On a more abstract level, Parker keeps his real name a secret and goes only by his initials; his first real act of intimacy with Sarah Ruth is to share his name: Obadiah Elihue. The third person limited point of view, therefore, allows the reader to do what both the eyes of Christ in the tattoo and Parker s wife do: to see Parker as he really is, not as he pretends to be. • 8. Raphael Research Paper Raffaello Sanzio, known as Raphael, was an Italian painter and architect born in the mountain town of Urbino. In his early years, Raphael was trained by his father Giovanni Santi, a court painter and versifier, allowing him to gain a wide education in the arts, literature, and social skills. This enabled Raphael to move easily amongst the higher circles of court society and this helped him gain recognition. His career falls naturally into three phases and three styles, first described by Giorgio Vasari: his early years in Umbria, then a period of about four years (from 1504 1508) absorbing the artistic traditions of Florence, followed by his last hectic and triumphant twelve years in Rome, working for two Popes and their close associates. Block wants to show the proper interpretation of the book of Ezekiel by providing different views on the interpretation of certain passages and different theological views. Moreover, Block provides history and other aspects for the better understanding of the book of Ezekiel. Daniel Block starts by introducing Zion theology. Zion theology is the Israelites religious attitude toward Jerusalem. Scholars recognize some Israelites thoughts regarding to the Zion Theology. First, since worshipping of Yahweh at the national temple in Jerusalem, the Israelites thought that the deity s enthronement is a central feature. Second, since the Location of the temple is on the peak of Zaphon, they assume that Zion is the center of the universe. Last, The election of Zion by YHWH is closely tied to the election of David. From Zion Yahweh s reign of peace and justice extends to the entire world. Additionally, Yahweh s kingship, which is the one of the core aspects of the Zion Theology, has poor evidences in Ezekiel s ministry. The word malak has been used to refer to Yahweh once (Ezek. 20:33). However, the context does not provide any element that has to do with the enthronement of Yahweh. All are born with halters round their necks; but it is only when caught in the swift, sudden turn of death, that mortals realize the silent, subtle, ever present perils of life. (Melville, 1851) The creation of Moby Dick was a significant turning point for American literature. Melville s application of intense symbolism, challenging themes, and extraordinary allusions contrast with that of typical American writings of that time. Next instant, the heavy eye splice in the rope s final end flew out of the stark empty tub, knocked down an oarsman, and smiting the sea, disappeared in its depths. (Melville, 1851) Despite the attempt of the crew, they were not the deciders of fate. On the other hand, this was similar to Americans at the time. Americans used God to justify their iniquities including treatment of races and expansion. As stated previously, America s justified the Manifest Destiny as God s word; thus, generating a strong sense of nationalism. Otto von Bismarck was instrumental in forming many of these alliances in an attempt to keep the European Concert together. He was eventually dismissed by Kaiser Wilhelm II, but would still accurately predict the beginning of the first international war. Initially, the Triple Alliance was a defensive pact between Germany, Austria Hungary, and Italy. It guaranteed mutual support in event of an attack by another power. It is this process that leads people to question, is a child s development influenced by genetics or their environment? This long debate has been at the forefront of psychology for countless decades now and is better known as Nature versus Nurture . The continuous controversy on whether or not children develop their psychological attributes based on genetics (nature) or the way in which they have been raised (nurture) has pondered the minds of psychologists for years. Through thorough experiments, studies, and discussions however, it is easy to see that nurture is far more important in the development of a human than nature. The Nature versus Nurture argument can be traced back many millenniums ago. In 350 B.C., philosophers asked the same question on human behaviour. Plato and Aristotle were two philosophers that each had two diverse views on the matter. Plato believed that knowledge and behaviour were due to inherent factors, but environmental factors still played a role in the equation. Conversely, Aristotle had different views. He believed in the idea of Tabula Rasa . The Blank Slate theory supported the nurture side of the argument and believed that everyone was born with a Tabula Rasa , Latin for Blank Slate . • 25. Essay Health Economics Cost benefit, cost effectiveness and cost utility analyses are forms of economic evaluation which are useful in health economics for comparing costs and allocating resources. Health economics is widely relevant to governments and the health sector in implementation of new policy, as it concerns the allocation of resources in the context of a limited budget, or scarcity . Economic evaluation is a potential tool for setting priorities in health, though it is only one of many potential criteria, including overall budget and public attitudes and wants. Economic evaluation is already in use in some settings, such as in pharmaceutical company proposals for government subsidisation, but there is room for expansion across the field of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Changing factors such as aging populations and new technologies becoming available are increasing expectations from people throughout the world, and decision makers must make rational choices to maximise benefits to population health whilst working with limited resources. Yothasamut et al (2009) summarise this by observing that health care resources in every setting are always constrained, while unlimited demand is observed . The best choices in the context of economics are the ones which maximise utility (individual satisfaction through consumption of goods) and welfare, the sum utility experienced by all individuals in society. Decision makers often have to seek satisfactory rather than optimal solutions, also known as working with bounded rationality (Simon 1957 in Williams et al 2008), as it is important to pursue both efficiency and equity in the funding of health care. Therefore, it may be unsuitable to fund the most cost effective option if it sacrifices the equal distribution of benefits. Research in health economics can take a normative or positive approach and this reflects the balance needed between cost control and equity when making economic decisions. Positive economic research and analysis is concerned with how things are and seeks to explain economic phenomena, whilst normative economic research and analysis is concerned with how things ought to be and relies on value ... • 26. LDCT Screening According to recent studies at Indiana Universty School of Medicine, alternative methods for detecting non small cell lung cancer are emerging. The current methods of detecting NSCLC may be effective, but they are also very expensive. One method called a low dose computed tomography (LDCT) has been successful in identifying malignant tumors. However, routine LDCT screenings would result in 1.3 to 2 billion dollars nationally in health care costs annually. Deig, Mendonca, and Lautenschlaeger suggest that pursuing other methods of screening for NSCLC would significantly decrease this cost. If screenings could be conducted in a cost efficient and effective manner, then the expensive LDCT procedure would only have to be conducted for patients who ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Biomarkers are natural indicators in the body that respond noticeably to the presence of disease. By measuring the responses of biomarkers, oncologists detect the cancerous cells before recommending expensive procedures, rather than immediately resorting to these procedures. One of these biomarkers that responds to the presence of cancerous cells is microRNA. MicroRNAs are molecules that are involved in the cell life cycle and therefore the progression of cancerous cells. A study in cancer patients was conducted to compare the accuracy of screening with microRNAs to screening with LDCT. Observing microRNAs did not prove to be as accurate at identifying cancer as LDCT, but since using microRNAs is a less expensive process, it can identify patients that should undergo LCDT testing. Screening with microRNA testing initially would decrease the number of patients paying for LCDT testing. Another biomarker that can be observed in response to cancer is ct DNA. Ct DNA refers to fragments of DNA from tumors found circulating in the blood stream. A recent study indicated that observing ct DNA could have multiple useful applications for oncologists. Ct DNA analysis during treatment could serve as an indication of how tumors react to treatment methods and whether recurrence is likely. Detecting ct DNA in the bloodstream could even serve as an early sign of cancer, observable before imaging tests even show tumors. However, ct DNA analysis has not yet proved to be a replacement for LDCT ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Structural techniques play a huge role in many poems due to the fact that structure sometimes reflects what is happening in the poem. This can clearly be seen with all the poems, in Remember and Do not go gentle into that good night a strict, tight and ridged structure and this helps reinforce the meaning that the poets are trying to portray. With Do not go gentle the structure of the poem in some respects contrasts what is actually happening with Dylan Thomas, with father dying; his head is all over the place but the structure is tight and strict. However, Columbus did not go there to spread Christianity, he forced the Taino into slavery, looting them, spreading deadly diseases that killed many Natives, and taking their land (causing other people to come to the Americas). However, Columbus day is celebrated by Americans thanking Columbus for finding America, but should we celebrate a man for terrorizing Native Americans? In addition, to all of this chaos, there is a huge debate going on if Confederate monuments should be allowed to stand or be taken down. These monuments come from the American Civil War, the North(Union) versus the South(Confederates). The South relied heavily on agriculture, using slaves to harvest their cotton. Some historians say that the South wanted to keep slavery, while others say that the South fought mostly for the right to decide their own affairs. Even though the North won, the South made monuments to make Confederate soldiers be portrayed as selfless heroes(no monuments have anything about pro slavery). Columbus day should be celebrated and the Confederate monuments should stay because people cannot forget their history, people respect these things for different reasons, and people do not know the real reason to why Columbus day and Confederate monuments are really celebrated for. The Civil War and Columbus finding the Americas will always be in our history and can never be changed even if we try. So, before I could basically even try to get over my own fear of going up in the hot air balloon we were already on our way there. The best thing about it was is that where the hot air balloon place was, people that we knew worked there so not only did we get to go there in the first place. Now we go to do it for free, and I ll tell you what to go in a hot air balloon is not cheap. So basically, this idea I had that I thought was never going to happen was happening right in front of my eyes. So after about a 20 30 minute car ride to the hot air balloon lift off place; we finally arrived. When we finally got there and all of my family got to the place to lift off we had to talk about all of the rules. The rule that probably scared me the most was how you could not move around a lot because the basket you had to stand in. The basket was able to break if there was too much weight or there was too much movement and just other stuff that is possible. Also, another really scary thing I had to do before getting in the hot air balloon was to basically sign a waiver saying that if something goes wrong and I die it s not their fault. But even though with all ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 44. Foreshadowing In The Tell Tale Heart The Tell Tale Heart is a famous horror fiction by Edgar Allan Poe. Poe is regarded as an important writer of suspense and terror tales. His stories are often composed of dark and terrifying atmosphere, and The Tell Tale Heart is also expressing terror with the story of an insane man killing the old man pitilessly. The narrator plans to kill the old man because of his vulture eye. He cruelly kills the old man and buries him under the floor. In the story, the intense feeling is created through setting, skill of foreshadowing and irony. First of all, the dark setting of the old man s room manifests terror in the story. His room was as black as pitch with the thick darkness (for the windows were close fastened, through fear of robbers), and so I knew that he could not see the opening of the door, .... (56 59). The author directly portrays the dark scene of the old man s room as black pitch, and the word thick emphasizes the deepness of the dark. The fact that the old man could see nothing because there s no light makes the readers feel anxious. People depend on the light for their own protection, and they instinctively feel fear when it gets dark around ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I heard all things in the heaven and in the earth. I heard many things in hell. (5 6). It is a delusion that one can hear all things in the heaven and hell, but the narrator insists that he can hear those things. This proves that the narrator is insane and makes readers get curious about the reason for the narrator s insistence. If we think simply, heaven and hell are the main elements that are indicating death, so it is logical to predict death in the story. Death is a main subject of horror and it creates a heavy atmosphere in the story. Heavy atmosphere and the growing tension of death causes the emotion of fear. In addition to foreshadowing, this story contains one more powerful constituent for the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 45. The Problem Of White Collar Crime White collar crime is a problem that we do not really see the full extent of; Geis and Stotland (1980) present the argument that the seriousness of victimisation caused by many corporations is much greater than that caused by common crimes however the public seem much less interested and concerned with white collar crime. Some traditional criminological theories have attempted to prove that white collar crime is not a different and separate phenomenon to common, every day crime. Robert Merton s Strain Theory is applied to everyday crime, however his theory was in fact set up as an economic theory that he believed could explain all types of corporate crimes as well as traditional crimes. Gottfredson and Hirschi also provided what they understood to be a General Theory of Crime with Control Theory, which they also believed to be relevant to both white collar and traditional crimes. I am going to discuss these theories in detail and show how they do, and do not provide sufficient explanations of white collar crimes. I am also going to include Organizational Theory in my discussion which looks at the issue of understanding crime in a different way. Traditional theories such as strain theory and control theory form a certain understanding of the issue, on the contrary some argue that these theories are not appropriate and need twisting to fit the issue, some suggesting a completely separate way of thinking is needed to understand white collar and corporate crime. • 46. Eugenics In Erskine Caldwell s Tobacco Road Eugenics in Tobacco Road Introduction It is almost impossible to think that there was a time in American history where eugenics was something that a large mass of the public thought was actually a great idea. But, when it comes time to face reality, one must realize that this was not just a fabled tale of time of the past and that it actually happened. When researching historical events or movements, nothing is more beneficial to find evidence than through popular literature of the specific time period. The novel that sums up what this entire movement is about the best would be Erskine Caldwell s Tobacco Road. Even though, to the naked eye, the story just seems to be a classic twentieth century American tale of drama, theft, and individual differences between the demographics represented, it is clear that, when analyzed, there is something much more deep and dark than one may initially see when first opening the novel. One can theorize that Erskine Caldwell, who actively supported eugenics in the midst of its rising popularity in pre war United States, wrote Tobacco Road as a means of promoting the accepted legislation of compulsory sterilization ... Length of hospital stay: calculated from the day of perform ing the procedure to the day of discharge from hospital. Chest X ray presentations: chest X ray was done for all patients one day after the procedure. The final histopatholog ical diagnosis presented in Table 5 shows that significant statis tical difference between two studied groups in cases of pleural tuberculosis and parapneumonic effusion (P 0.05). The sensitivity of ultrasound guided needle pleural biopsy in diagnosis of pleural lesions was 85% as 17 out of 20 cases were diagnosed by ultrasound guided pleural biopsy. In this study, we have presented the data of 40 patients who were divided into two groups. Group I (20 patients) in whom Tru cut needle biopsy was performed guided by ultrasonography for the diag nosis of pleural lesions and group II (20 patients) who under went thoracoscopy for the diagnosis of undiagnosed pleural lesions. Exudative pleural effusions are frequently encountered in pulmonary practice. Determination of a specific diagnosis can represent a major challenge. Thoracoscopy is the investiga tion of choice in exudative pleural effusions where a diagnostic pleural aspiration is inconclusive and malignancy is suspected [8]. The clinical findings in this study were consistent with Sahn et al. [9] who found that shortness of breath and chest pain were the most common symptoms in pleural effusion. Also, Dhital et al. [10] reported that the most common clinical symp toms were in the form of shortness of breath (83%), cough (67%) and fever ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 48. Economic Systems, Capitalism And Socialism Economic Systems People can use economic systems to build empires and destroy civilizations. The society s featured in the books 1984 by George Orwell and Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury did just that. Both took advantage of some form of an economic system to achieve their respective goals. Whether it be the command economy of Oceania, or the overly consumerist economy of the dystopian United States, they both employed economics to their benefit. Economics is the science of scarcity. Scarcity is when you have a population with unlimited wants coupled with limited resources. Economics deals with the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services. An economic system is how a society deals with these factors. The three main questions that an economic system is supposed to answer are what will we produce? how will we produce it? who gets it? Answer these questions and you have an economic system (Hettige). This report will cover the two main economic systems, capitalism and socialism. Capitalism Capitalism promotes private ownership of the means of production, or resources, to produce goods and services for profit. In other terms, private entities purchase resources; be it labor, natural resources, or factories to create goods to sell for profit. Capitalism promotes that people build up their own wealth and that all, or most, available resources be privately owned. Production in capitalism is controlled by supply and demand and individuals purchase products on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
