Mens Rea (Blameworthiness) Introduction Duff = responsibility is a necessary but not a sufficient
condition of liability An actor is responsible when they are sufficiently blameworthy in causing the

judgment, and there can be involuntary MR e.g. drugged paedophile in Kingston. * There are many

* Lord Bridge disagrees with the leniency of the Woollin definition. He uses the example of a man
who boards a plane to Manchester the plane s arrival in Manchester is a virtual certainty and so it
should be seen as conclusive proof of intent to go there. Woollin is more generous. * Exceptional
cases : oblique intention D has a purpose other than causing the prohibited harm but where that result
is an inevitable or likely consequence in rare cases it is permissible / central problem is that there are 2
possible interpretations of Woollin * Definitional interpretation = extended definition of intention if a
consequence is foreseen as virtually certain the jury may be told that this amounts to intention *
Evidential interpretation = still no definition of intention where a consequence is foreseen as virtually
certain this is evidence entitling a court or jury to find intention jury has discretion * Evidential

certainty to proof of intent, not just evidence. Rix LJ couldn t see the difference. * Adv. of evidential =

How Did Carrie Chapman Catt Impact Society
Carrie Chapman Catt
In the adjustment of the new order of things, we women demand an equal voice; we shall accept
nothing less. These are the words of Carrie Chapman Catt, an american feminist in the 1900 s. She had
a powerful voice that made a huge impact on the way women are treated today s society. She changed
the way women of today are viewed. Her voice made us equal, it made us superior to men.
In the 1900 s women didn t have the same rights as men, we didn t have the right to vote. One voice
was all we needed to change the way men viewed women and Carrie Chapman Catt was that one
voice. Carrie was a women s rights activist, she only wanted to have equality. Carrie led the Women s
rights movement for 25 years. She was the leader of the National American Women s Suffrage
Association. The National American Women s Suffrage Association was a group of women that fought
for the rights of women, specifically voting rights. When ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They say she campaigned but she only campaigned for women s rights. Contrary to what everyone
believes Carrie was more for equality between genders. She held elections voting for women s rights
but the women couldn t vote half the time. She had meetings with women on ways to gain rights.
Carrie set up the Mississippi Valley conference to give women a chance to meet and discuss new ideas
together. Carrie wanted peace and to bring everyone together, she didn t want us to have a label of it s
because you re a women.
Carrie had that one voice, the voice of a motivated woman. She fought for peace and equality for
women. Without the voice of Carrie Chapman Catt we wouldn t have the rights we have today. We
wouldn t be able to vote and we would be compared to men every second of everyday. She had a
powerful voice that changed everything. If is wasn t for Carrie we would still have the rights we had
in the 1900 s and everything would be different, wouldn t

We Shall Overcome Summary
The article, We Shall Overcome: Promoting an Agenda for Integrating Spirituality and Community
Practice by Anthony J. Hill and Linda Plitt Donaldson (2012) detailed the role of spirituality in social
work community practice and investigated previous research conducted integrating spirituality into
community practice. The article described the relationship between organized religion and community
outreach, since many religions offer assistance to needy members of their congregations and
communities.
An important claim of the authors was the lack of studies conducted about incorporating spirituality
into community practice. Spirituality has been studied at micro levels of social work and been found
to be influential in helping individuals, therefore, it is possible that it would be beneficial in macro
practice as well, furthermore, studies should be done to determine spirituality s efficiency in
community practice (Hill Donaldson, 2012).
This article is valuable to social workers, particularly macro level workers because spirituality may
not be considered a part of community or macro social work ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Social workers should be aware of this fact and give religious leaders information on how to help
these individuals and inform the leaders of resources available to the victims. I spoke to a pastor when
I was contacting an organization to distribute the domestic violence survey to, and he said domestic
violence was an issue he and his wife were very passionate about. Spirituality is also connected to the
community and organizing social movements. Spirituality can help motivate individuals towards a
common purpose or goal, and religious organizations have assisted communities in meeting needs for
social change and can be an ally of community practitioners (Hill Donaldson,

How Shakespeare Makes the Audience Aware of Cleopatra s...
How Shakespeare Makes the Audience Aware of Cleopatra s Infinite Variety in the Opening Act
Cleopatra was a talented mistress who used her feminine charm for personal gain. She was seductive,
lustful, flirtatious, and sarcastic, she had courage, and she was jealous, spiteful, very violent and
impatient. She was a woman of many contrasts, facets and changing moods. Shakespeare shows these
different aspects of her character in the first act then goes on to build on them throughout the play.
In the opening scene straight away we enter into Philo and Demetrius friends of Antony conversation,
the subject of which is Cleopatra, Philo is not speaking very highly of her saying she has, . . .a tawny

In scene two Antonysays, . . . these strong Egyptian feathers I must break, or lose my self in dotage.
Here Antony is explaining that he needs to break the bond between him and Cleopatra because he
knows she will ruin him. Later in that scene he says, . . . I must from this enchanting queen break off. .
. which shows that he feels strongly about leaving Cleopatra but he is determined to do it. Enobarbus
has a strong and pleasant opinion of Cleopatra and shares it with Antony, . . . her passions are made of
nothing but the finest part of pure love. We cannot call her winds and waters sighs and tears; they are
greater storms and tempests than almanacs can report: this cannot be cunning in her; if it be, she
makes a shower of rain as well as Jove. Here Enobarbus is saying that Cleopatra is very passionate
about the way she feels, she moves from one extreme to another but doesn t settle in between. He is

German Tradition Influenced The American Tradition
German tradition influenced the American tradition immensely. While they did not agree on
everything the German tradition caused American sociologists to question their society and examine it
further, American social philosophy took shape largely in response to stimulation from the teachings
of the German tradition, (pp.252). German and American views on what makes a good society differ
tremendously. The German sociologists believe that no one can determine whether a society is good or
bad while the American sociologists believe a good society rests on the norms that a particular society
has created. Germans believe sociologists cannot say whether a society is good or bad and that
absolutely no one can determine. German sociologists, especially Weber believed that, the calling of
scholars and scientists was best justified by the contributions their work makes to enhancing human
self consciousness, (pp.208). They believed that individuals or groups of people create codes of
morality where they all agree on it but that order is not something we can adhere to (lecture). These
groups of people or the individuals collectively make up for themselves what is good and bad based
on the norms that they wish to follow. They thought a normative self existed and believed individuals
had freedom and that they determined their actions for themselves and that an individual can chose
what rules they want to follow (lecture). They noted that we can be free to the extent of making

artistic depictions of Shakespeare the Chandos portrait, the Droeshout engraving, and the wall
monument at the holy trinity church in Shakespeare s home town. The Chandos portrait is the most
widely known and is believed to be the only portrait done while he was alive. It shows a balding but
not unhandsome man of about forty who sports a trim beard (Bryson, 2). He was sporting a very
bohemian looking earring and dark clothing signifying that he has some sort of wealth. The Droeshout

The Importance of Boosting Morale in the Workplace
The Importance of Boosting Morale in the Workplace A team is only as strong as their weakest link.
The same can also be said for a company. It is often forgotten that it takes everyone in a company
operating on all cylinders for it to be successful. However, it is no secret that humans tend to perform
at the highest of their abilities when they are happy. It makes sense that a company would want their
employees operating at a higher productivity rate. For the company higher productivity normally
results in more income. The company will not get a high level of productivity from employees
(legally) unless they boost morale. Keeping employees involved, less stressed and motivated by
presenting challenging but, attainable goals with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This means that a good goal is specific, achievable but challenging, while providing the employee
with a sense that the goal is indeed theirs and that the employee is interested in achieving the goal. The
performance of the employee attempting to complete the goal is determined by the goal directed
effort, how much support the company offers and the employees own abilities and traits. When the
goal is complete the model shows that intrinsic rewards and extrinsic rewards are followed by
satisfaction. The goal setting theory model proves that when goals are set appropriately the employees
performance will ultimately lead to them attaining a reward that in turn will give the employee
satisfaction and boost morale. Stress is a major part of any job. Psychologists believe stress is caused
by a stimulus that is either physical or psychological that makes the individual respond to the stimulus
in some way (#2 pg 178). Stress can be brought on by a goal or daunting task that is unachievable or
unpleasant. This is often called distress. However, not all stress is brought on by negative things.
Pleasurable stress is called eustress. Eustress normally is experienced during pleasurable events. Stress
can be used to motivate employees to accomplish a goal or it may need to be lowered to help improve
morale. The only way to deal with stress is to find what the stimulus is. Sometimes stress is triggered

Teaching Reading Comprehension
Introduction
What is reading? Reading is about understanding written texts. It is a complex activity that involves
both perception and thought. Reading consists of two related processes: word recognition and
comprehension. Word recognition refers to the process of perceiving how written symbols correspond
to one s spoken language. Comprehension is the process of making sense of words, sentences and
connected text. Readers typically make use of background knowledge, vocabulary, grammatical
knowledge, experience with text and other strategies to help them understand written text.
Researchs and classroom practices support the use of a balanced approach in teaching reading
comprehension. Because reading comprehension depends on efficient ... Show more content on

A person may also read for enjoyment, or to enhance knowledge of the language being read. The
purpose(s) for reading guide the reader s selection of texts.
The purpose for reading also determines the appropriate approach to reading comprehension. A person
who needs to know whether she can afford to eat at a particular restaurant needs to comprehend the
pricing information provided on the menu, but does not need to recognize the name of every appetizer
listed. A person reading poetry for enjoyment needs to recognize the words the poet uses and the ways
they are put together, but does not need to identify main idea and supporting details. However, a
person using a scientific article to support an opinion needs to know the vocabulary that is used,
understand the facts and cause effect sequences that are presented, and recognize ideas that are
presented as hypotheses and givens.
Reading research shows that good readers
· Read extensively
· Integrate information in the text with existing knowledge
· Have a flexible reading style, depending on what they are reading
· Are motivated
· Rely on different skills interacting: perceptual processing, phonemic processing, recall
· Read for a purpose; reading serves a function

Diffusion of Osmosis through a Membrane
Introduction
The aim of these experiments are to determine the diffusion of osmosis through a selectively
permeable membrane by using a solute and determining the rate at which concentration moves from
an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration and marking the time taken from the
starting point to the end point. Membranes can be impermeable to larger molecules such as ions and
proteins to pass through where permeable membranes will allow hydrophobic molecules such as lipids
and small molecules like oxygen, nitrogen and carbon dioxide to pass through.
The motive force for the movement of water is the differences in osmotic pressure between ... Show

The percentage indicates the number of grams of solute per 100ml of solution. Secondly, to assemble
the funnel apparatus, you will have to obtain a section of membrane and keep it wet. And then you
will need to place the membrane of the mouth of the funnel and secure it with an elastic band, then
fold the membrane over the first elastic band and secure it with second elastic band. Make sure the
membrane is tight over the mouth of the funnel and it should not leak. The membrane should not be
allowed to get dry during this experiment. Then you need to add one drop of food colouring to your
sugar solution and by doing this it will make it easier to identify the solution in the tube of the thistle
funnel. Then you have to suspend the funnel in the beaker with the mouth of the funnel about 2cm off
the bottom of the beaker. Once done this, you will pour distilled water into the beaker until the water
level is 1cm above the lower rim of the funnel. When you are making the control, you use a dropper to
fill the funnel with coloured distilled water to the first mark which is the lowest point. When you are
making the experiments, you use a dropper to fill the funnel to just below the first mark with the sugar
solution and remember the volume used. You need to watch the movement of the solution and when it
reaches the first mark, make a note of the time because this will be the starting point. The funnel will
be marked at 1mm intervals so allow the solution to rise to exactly 10 mm and make a note of this
time. Once you have done the first replicate empty both funnels and examine the membranes for
damage and then do 2 more replicates using both funnels and both funnels will contain the sugar

African American Communities in Beloved
Thesis: Toni Morrison focuses on negative impact of slavery on the well being of African American
communities throughout her novel Beloved by depicting the damage done, its effects on individual
characters, and the renewal of community.
1. The enforcement of slavery has destroyed black communities and families 1. Families throughout
Beloved were split due to slavery 2. The community of 124 abandons its members 1. Characters are
negatively impacted by the lack of community 1. The deeds and traits of Six o compared to the rest of

Stamp Paid confronted the wickedness of having a fellow black live in a empty lonesome cellar,
another example of the pain the community inflicts upon itself. They not only alienate Sethe and her
family, but Paul D for having relations with them. The community was longing for Sethe to come on
difficult times (155 Hinson), and Paul D was only another target for the community s anger. Hajer
Ayadi theorizes here that instead of taking care of a fellow ex slave Paul D, the community once again
fails to perform its role (Ayadi, 265).
Slavery destroyed African American communities, specifically Bluestone, and the damage is evident
when Sethe takes Beloved s life. The circumstances leading to the event is most important however.
When Sethe arrived at Bluestone all mashed up and split open carrying newborn Beloved, Stamp Paid
sets out to collect to bucket fulls of blackberries (Morrison, 159). Sethe matches the buckets of fruit
with chickens, fish, turkeys, and a list of other items. The community quickly grows malice towards
Baby Suggs grand display of wealth. Too much, they thought. Where does she get it all...It made them
furious (Morrison, 161). The community was envious of how well Baby Suggs was doing. For Baby
Suggs to have so much were His [God s] powers they did not belong to an ex slave who had probably

The History Of Quantum Computing
The field of quantum information science is undergoing rapid growth, and is leading to many new and
exciting discoveries with applications in computer science, communication, encryption, and
elsewhere. One application is quantum computing, which uses quantum qubits instead of classical
bits, and has the potential to allow researchers to solve certain previously intractable problems in a
much shorter timeframe. Another is quantum cryptography, which allows for theoretically unbreakable
encryption.
Many experiments in quantum information science rely on single photon detectors as core components
of their functionality. Quantum key distribution experiments transmit the information using photons,

One of the most common superconductors used in low temperature experiments for this purpose is
niobium titanium alloy (NbTi). At very low temperatures, NbTi can transfer an order of magnitude
less heat than non superconducting cables [2]. However, titanium and titanium alloys form oxides
when exposed to air, and these oxides make soldering to NbTi cables nearly impossible. While
solderless methods of connectorizing cables exist, the machines required are expensive and purpose
built for one size of cable [3].
A better candidate for connectorization is electroplating, which has been one of the focuses of my
research in Professor Lafyatis and Professor Gauthier s groups at The Ohio State University. By
studying various electroplating techniques, I aim to create a simpler, less expensive procedure which
would allow our group to produce these cables on demand to use with our SNSPDs. In the past,
companies have used nickel electroplating of NbTi cables, which is described in a patent by Saubestre
and Bulan in 1961 [4]. However, this technique has two issues that prevent it from being useful in for
plating NbTi today. First, the metal being plated is nickel, which is ferromagnetic. In recent years,
there have been many experiments at cold temperatures that are highly sensitive to magnetism,
including research using SQUIDs, magnetometers, or nuclear magnetic resonance, making nickel a
poor choice of plating

A Report On Traditional Neighbourhood Search Methods
Initial Population: We originally decide the size of the population, and then the method by which the
members for the population are chosen. The primary idea of the size of the population always forms a
trade off between the efficiency and the effectiveness of GA implementation. In general, it appears
that there should be some ideal value for a given length or size of the population, on the grounds that
too little a population would not permit adequate opportunity for exploring the search space
effectively, while too big a population would damage the efficiency of the approach that no solution
could be expected in an realistic amount of time limit [15]. Termination Condition: Traditional
neighbourhood search methods are simple in the sense that they terminate when a local optimum is
encountered. On the other hand, GAs are blind search stochastic optimization techniques that could in
principle run for endlessly, but could converge fast to the solution with right termination criteria set. In
practice, a termination criterion is mandatory to prevent the iterations get infinite; the common
practices are to set a limit on the number of fitness evaluations or the computation time consumed, or
to track the variability in the population and stop when this falls below a pre set boundary value. The
meaning of diversity in the latter case is not always apparent, and it could relate either to the genotype
or the phenotype, but the most effective way is through a measure of the

Introduction.
Musical notes are a language that has evolved over thousands of years and the notation that we know
today, there are more than 300 years. Music notation is a representation of sound by symbols of a
simple notation for pitch, length and timing to more advanced features of expression, timbre, and even
special effects. This book will show you the basics of reading music, some more advanced methods
and how you can learn more about the subject.
This guide focuses on musical notations and symbols found on sheet music; note counts, accidentals,
time signatures, key signatures, breaks, codas, ornaments, and articulations, to mention a few. This
guide will also include pictures and simplified definitions to make it easier for you to understand.
Modern musical notation was derived from European Classical music and is still used by musicians
around the world.
In the middle of the 19th century, it was said that the monasteries in Europe began developing
notations for Gregorian chant using neumes* or the earliest musical notation. The roots of modern
musical notation symbols are originally from the Roman Catholic Church.
Neumes These were the earliest form of musical notation, used during the middle ages by Christians,
which are still being used for Gregorian chants and plainsongs (or plainchants) nowadays.

Feminist Criticism In The Thirteenth Night
Feminist criticism, a direct product of the women s movement of the 1960s , is a broad school of
theory that examines the representations of women in literature as well as the socially constructed
concept of femininity (Barry, 2009, p.116). Besides challenging the previously unquestioned
naturalness of gender roles in society, feminist criticism is also concerned with female experiences of
oppression, and seeks to expose how aspects of our culture are inherently patriarchal (Purdue
University, 2010). In addition, feminist criticism raises the question of whether or not an inherently
female language exists, and aims to change the traditional literary canon that previously marginalized
women writers.

Oseki s identity is defined by her social roles in relation to male figures, in line with the Confucian

Winston argues that she exists in an inchoate body, for she is neither her own person nor a corpse ; her
true self exists acceptably only within the cracks of her fragmented identity, and she struggles to
suppress her desire for agency (Winston, 2004, p.10). Her attempt to give up her roles as wife and

The Basics Of Synchronous And Asynchronous Circuits
ABSTRACT The aim of the presented report is to understand the basics of synchronous and
asynchronous circuits. The term paper is about synchronous and asynchronous circuits and their
differences. The advantages and disadvantages of both synchronous and asynchronous circuits are
discussed further. Digital circuits and sequential circuits are also described in brief at the beginning of
the report. The clock gating, self clock gating and clock signals are explained. Further, the sequential
machines moore and mealy are discussed along with their differences and variations. In the end, the
differences between the two types of circuits are highlighted. Also, the term paper is summed with a
conclusion in the end. What are digital circuits? Those circuits wherever the signal should be one in
every of 2 distinct levels is referred to as digital circuit. Every level is taken into account jointly of 2
completely different states. Example on/off, 0/1, true/false etc. In comparison to analog circuits,
digital circuits are less susceptible to noise or degradation in quality, additionally the errors are
detected and corrected simply with the assistance of digital signals. EDA ELECTRONIC style

Plagiarism And The Ethics Of Plagiarism
Many scholars and parents have heard the term plagiarism while talking about writing essays, poems,
and other works. Plagiarism is defined as to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one s
own by Merriam Webster dictionary. While plagiarism may be denoted as stealing one s work without
credit, a more vast and broad definition usually applies to college level work. Every college and
university has their own handbook and code of conduct on what exactly plagiarism is defined as, and
what are the consequences for breaking these rules. Collin College s Scholastic Dishonesty , Boston
University s Academic Conduct Code , and Yale College s What is Plagiarism? all have different
perspectives as to what plagiarism is and how it is defined.
Collin College s Scholastic Dishonesty is set up in six sections, four having bolded first words,
showing what each paragraph is about. The wording in the sections are very formal; making it seem as
though to steal someone s work to be childish or immature. The tone, set by the wording and overall
flow of the sentences, is very serious; it makes it seem as though committing one of these crimes is as
bad and just as serious as committing murder. The list of scholastic dishonesties, general scholastic
dishonesty, plagiarism, cheating, and collusion, is very open ended. Collin College even goes as far as
saying while specific examples are listed below, this is not an exhaustive list and scholastic dishonesty

Imagine you are coaching a team in college. You have had a great season and you ve only lost 1 game
and won your division. However, you lose your spot in the playoff to another team that was
undefeated. How would this make you feel? The BCS should be replaced with a playoff system in
College Football. Replacing the BCS with a playoff system would give each of the eleven conferences
(and the FBS Independents) an equal opportunity to compete for the national championship. Most
teams are left out of the BCS due to 1 loss, even though they might ve had a great season. A playoff
system would even up the playing field, allowing more teams to compete for the National
Championship. No teams with 2 losses have ever made the championship (In fact no team with 2
losses, besides Auburn, has even placed in the top 4). There also hasn t been a team to win the ... Show

Higher ranked schools have an option to weaken to protect their undefeated record. Higher ranked
teams can pay lower ranked schools to play against them. This would allow the higher ranked team to
avoid a loss. Many teams pay lower ranked teams to play against them. For example, Alabama (#1
ranked team in College Football) paid West Kentucky (6 7 record) $1.3 million to play them. Another
example is Miami (FL) (ACC Coastal Champion) paid Arkansas State (3 5 record) $300,000 to play
them (Rovell 1).
A lot of people state that since there are so many teams, there is no way to play each team. This is
wrong for the following reason. Every team doesn t have to make the playoffs. Only one of every
conference (and one from the FBS Independents with six teams in them). Every team has a conference
(besides the FBS Independents) which means every team has a chance to compete in their conference
championship game. This would mean that every team in each conference (including an FBS
Independents championship) would have an equal opportunity to make the playoffs (NCAA

Chicken Pox and Epidemiology
Chicken Pox is a virus caused by varicella zoster, a member of the herpes family. This same virus also
is a cause of herpes zoster other known as shingles in adults. Chicken pox is very contagious and can
easily spread to people. Chicken pox is acquired by coming into contact with the fluid of a chicken
pox blister, or airborne by an infected person sneezing near you. The blister like rash usually lasts five
to ten days. The incubation period lasts 10 21 days and a person with chickenpox becomes contagious
one to two days before their blisters appear. The person with chicken pox remains contagious until all

The person should avoid scratching or rubbing the itchy areas and keep their fingernails short to avoid
damaging the skin. The infected person should avoid prolonged exposure to excessive heat and
humidity. The use of over the counter antihistamines or hydrocortisone creams may be recommended
for itch relief. Some doctors may prescribe antivirals if the rash began within 24 hours. Antiviral
medication is not usually prescribed to otherwise healthy children who do not have severe symptoms.
Antivirals are usually prescribed to high risk groups whom are prone to severe symptoms such as
eczema, lung conditions, or who immunocompromised individuals. The infected person should also be
advised to avoid aspirin due to association with a serious condition called Reyes syndrome or
Ibuprofen due to the association of more severe secondary infections. Tylenol is recommended for
fever relief. Some complications that can occur are bacterial infections secondary to scratching,
encephalitis, pneumonia and death. The preventions of chickenpox are acquired by vaccination with
the varicella vaccine in children, adolescents, and adults, and the herpes zoster vaccine for persons of
60 and older (Maurer Smith). The Centers for Disease and controls estimates that 95% of Americans
will have chickenpox by the time they reach adulthood. The CDC also estimates that there are 4

Argument Against Surrogacy In Canada
Good afternoon, Mr Prime Minster, and federal and state members of parliament. I m Alex Barry
Ramoi, we are all here today to review and debate our current laws affecting the Australian family. As
you ve stated Mr Prime Minster, we are in a time of great social change and family life has become
vastly different to that of our grandparents. The values of the new generation are changing and our
laws need to be updated to be properly adequate for these changes. One of those laws that I personally
feel requires immediate change is our current laws surrounding surrogacy as it has always been and
always will be a common desire to have a family. The current laws and penalties are Inconsistent
throughout all states, they discriminate especially against same sex couples, they don t make clear on
what is legally acceptable and our current law system just moves our surrogacy issues overseas. ...

Descriptive Essay On Ballet Slippers
The young, fashionable man contrasted starkly against other High Ground patrons, who were nearly
all dressed casually. However, this casual clothing took different forms; from the woman in the casual
dress to the outdoorsy looking man, there were many variations on casual wear. For example, there
was one young woman in the line who was wearing the same shorts and a tee combination as many
other patrons. Hanging off the back of her backpack were a pair of pink leather shoes, soft and supple,
with worn pads on the bottom where the material was gathered in from the top. They were hooked
onto her backpack with a carabiner through the criss crossed elastic bands which pulled the two sides
of the shoe together. Through iconic reasoning, I recognized them as ballet slippers. This lead me to
assume that this young woman was a dancer, coming from or going to class or rehearsal. This
indexical assumption was based on my recognizing the ballet slippers and understanding what ballet
slippers are generally used for, as well as knowing that rarely, if ever, someone would hang a pair of
well used ballet slippers off of their backpack as a sort of fashion statement. After mentally cataloging
the woman in the summer dress, the hiker, the fashionable young man, and now the ballerina based on
clothes and accessories, I tried to find a sign that was not clothing. I noticed the young woman at the
table next to mine, who was industriously typing away on her laptop, referring every now and

Analysis Of Flaming Iguanas By Cormac Mccarthy
Transfiguration of America Through Road Novels Flaming Iguanas by Erika Lopez and The Road by
Cormac McCarthy critiques America, while transgressing heteronormativity and modifying mobility
and identity. Traveling west is an adventure and an opportunity to discover oneself, it is also an
extension to exercise one s freedom. As a woman,Tomato Rodriguez travels across the country to see
his dad in California. Being on the road transgresses the meaning of the road, whilst inventing one s
identity. It is a space to develop a bond that is of mutual respect, sustained by love. In Flaming
Iguanas the road is presented as a means of escape and reassertion. Tomato escapes domestication,
common societal beliefs that are placed on women. As a bisexual, chicano woman on the road she is
transgressing heteronormativity. In previous road novels the road is a place for white hetero men
having an adventure. Tomato exercises her new found identity when she consummates with the
Canadian John, challenging double standards that are placed on women. She writes if you re a woman
traveling alone people will instantly want to kill you , she is not scared to challenge these myths and
exercise her freedom, as a woman on the road (111). As a pioneer in heteronormativity, she has set a
path in which she does not conform to society s ideals, ultimately mending gender norms for others.
The road novels are usually dominated by men and their adventures, causing havoc on everywhere

People Corrupt Power In George Orwell s Animal Farm And...
William Gaddis once said Power doesn t corrupt people, People corrupt power In Animal Farm and
Mouseland both of the animals who have the power take over and create corrupt and unequal
societies. This causes the societies to fall under the rules of greedy and selfish leaders. The authors of
Animal Farm and Mouseland use the narrative techniques of characterization and conflict to illustrate
messages about how power can destroy societies and take away the equality in the society.
First, in Animal Farm and Mouseland the authors use characterization to show how power can destroy
societies and can take away the equality that is in the society. For example, in Animal Farm, George
Orwell uses the pigs as a way to show the different levels of importance. It shows how the other
animals are always below the pigs. On pages 35 and 36 it states You do not imagine, I hope, that we
pigs are doing this in a spirit of selfishness and privilege? Many of us actually dislike milk and apples.
I dislike them myself. Our sole object in taking these things is to preserve our health. Milk and apples
(this had been proven by science, comrades) contain substances absolutely necessary to the well being
of a pig. We pigs are brainworkers. Orwell uses the words absolutely necessary to the well being of a
pig making it seem the most important to the pigs and no other animals. This means that the pigs
started to take the things they wanted and decided they were the ones who had all of the power. This
shows that the power they created could give them more equal rights than the others. In a similar ways
Tommy Douglas uses the cats to show how the other animals are below them and the cats are the ones
who have power. In paragraph 3 of Mouseland it states A government made up of big, fat, black cats.
Douglas states fat, black, cats. characterizing the cats are lazy and useless. This means that in
Mouseland there was a society run by animals who didn t do what they needed and they were lazy.
This shows that just because of the way the cats are characterized they aren t good leaders and they
have the power. This shows that in Animal Farm and Mouseland the people in power were
characterized as greedy and selfish, but came off to the

Waiting For Godot And Dr Strangelove Essay
Significant texts in any period arise from particular ways of thinking and possess an enduring
relevance. Following the dropping of the atomic bombs at the end of World War Two, global
consciousness began to slowly change due to the realisation that civilisation could be destroyed at the
press of a button. Texts that are able to grasp these changes, depicting their immediate context while
also reflecting on universal questions, possess enduring value. Waiting for Godot, the 1952 stage play
by Samuel Beckett, challenged the idea of human purpose and also questioned the relevance of
scripture and religious institutions. Similarly, Plath, in Ariel, a collection of poems posthumously
published in 1965, challenged the same ideas, especially ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The montage is accompanied by a non diegetic string arrangement of the song Try a Little Tenderness
. Kubrick specifically creates an overt sexual innuendo to make light of great fear. This foreshadows
the rest of the movie where frequent sexual themes and comedic tropes are utilised to undermine
previously unquestioned figures of authority. Beckett s opening also foreshadows the rest of the play,
as the setting begins the continual challenge of the institutional idea of human purpose, as it
accentuates the lack of meaning an idea also extended by the characters. When Estragon struggles to
take off his boot, he mutters Nothing to be done , which Vladimir mistakes for existential discourse
and replies with I m beginning to come around to that opinion. All my life I ve put it from me. Beckett
uses verbal irony to show how the most simple statement could be mistaken as a philosophical
pondering on existence, which in turn is designed to pose the question of whether individuals truly
have an essence. Similarly, Kubrick uses absurdist humour to force a questioning of what had been the
bedrock of the western world: the political sphere. President Muffley, himself named after pubic hair
wigs, attempts to avert atomic bombs being dropped on Russia and desperately calls the Chairman of
the USSR. However he proceeds to waste time commenting on the good phone connection,

The Global Threat of Malicious Code

Malicious code is Software or firmware intended to perform an unauthorized process that will have an
adverse impact on the confidentiality, integrity, or availability of an information system. 1 Today, as
ubiquitous computing is fast becoming a reality and information systems are becoming a part of
everything from mobile phones to cars, any threat to an information system represents a risk to
hardware, software, data, and the users that depend on their confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

So they built a large horse and presented it to the Trojans as a gift, which the Trojans accepted. Hidden
inside the gigantic horse was a small army of Greek soldiers. During the night, the soldiers
dismounted and quickly gained control of key defenses, allowing the rest of the Greek army to invade
the previously invulnerable city of Troy. Just as in the myth, Trojan horse programs allow
unauthorized users access to a computer system. While viruses and worms usually carry a payload,
Trojan horses usually do not. Payloads are the part of the malicious code that modify, erase, or leak
information from a system. They may also alter the state of a system, by displaying a simple undesired
screen or causing programs to crash or behave abnormally. The lifecycle of viruses and worms is to
infect as many systems or files as possible, and then to execute its payload at a predetermined trigger.
The trigger may be a time or system event. Trojans, on the other hand, allow unauthorized,
anonymous access to information systems. Another type of threat that is becoming increasingly
popular is malicious code hybrids. Hybrids use a combination of virus, worm, and Trojan techniques;
virus techniques for self replication, worm techniques for rapid propagation over the Internet, and
Trojan techniques for remote system compromise. Today, hybrids represent a growing threat because
of their increasing sophistication and multiple propagation

Selective Incorporation Research Paper

RA #2 Nationalizing Civil Liberties (Selective Incorporation) The concept of selective incorporation
has played a huge role over the debate of the powers of a state or local government against the federal
government. According to Tom Streissguth, ... it refers to how the rights outlined in the Constitution
apply to the states and the requirement that state laws and constitutions must observe these rights in
his article The Definition of Selective Incorporation (Streissguth). After the Civil War, the idea of
selective incorporation came with the passing of the Fourteenth Amendment. The legislature laid
down significant new rights for the citizens of the United States; these rights included due process and
equal protection. This amendment also touched upon and strengthened the first ten amendments to the
Constitution known as the Bill of Rights. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

are what drive all of the negative things in society. Characteristics of evil are all around us in our
everyday lives. political leaders, celebrities, People we idolize show characteristics of evil. Even small
insignificant roles in society hold certain evils in their motives. Throughout this story these evils were
for once boldly stated for all to understand. The games the boys play, the fire they set, and their rescue,

culprit of greed. Time and time again in the story he reflected his obsession of having complete power

Video Games Have A Huge Part Of Society
From Pac Man to Call of Duty, video games have been a huge part of society. People will line up
hours before a midnight launch of a video game just so they can play it the night it gets released.
Video games aren t just a hobby they are a passion. People get immersed in fantasy worlds playing
Call of Duty or being a dragon slayer in dragon age or Elder Scrolls. Video games are about
accomplishment and competiveness. Xbox and PlayStation have built an empire on video games and
consoles because our society fell in love with them dating way back to the arcade Pac Man and
Donkey Kong days. Video game sales ($25 billion in 2011) continue to be the No. 1 form of
discretionary entertainment, outshining both movies and music (USA,News 2015). Video games are
obviously nothing without the consoles you play them on. PlayStation and Xbox are the biggest
competitors in the video game market. The new consoles are virtually the same with a few small
differences. The difference between buying an Xbox one or a PlayStation 4 is mostly your history of
buying. Most PlayStation users have always had PlayStations and most Xbox users have always had
Xbox s. For a huge number of our society, playing video games is a lifestyle.
History In 1967 Ralph Baer invented the first video game that worked on a television screen. The
video game was a very simple game, consisting of two squares that chase each other on the screen.
However, this simple game paved the way for future video games and future

separated from their hunting parties. At first, they argue, but realize that it s useless to fight given their
positions, trapped under a tree. They soon reconcile, and see what appears to be one of their hunting
parties. As time passes, however, it becomes apparent that what is thought of a hunting party is
actually a pack of wolves and that death is inevitable. A Story of an Hour depicts Mrs. Mallard, who
has a heart condition, and is given the shocking news that her husband has died in a train accident. Her
sister gently breaks the news, and while Mrs. Mallard initially feels grief, gradually it turns to a
feeling of freedom. Soon after, she comes out of her room and down the stairs to see her husband walk
through the door, unharmed. When she sees him, Mrs. Mallard dies of a heart attack. The doctor says
that she died of the joy that kills. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The primary similarity is the conflict. In both tales, there is a conflict between someone or someone or
something. In The Interlopers , the main conflict is the hostility between the two men, and the second
is man versus nature, referring to the helplessness of the men when trapped by the tree branch. The
Story of an Hour presents two examples of conflict as well. The external is between Mrs. Mallard and
her husband, and the internal is between freedom and marriage. Mrs. Mallard though

Much Ado About Nothing and Good Will Hunting
Self discovery relies on the learning from others.Self discovery is defined as The act or process of
achieving understanding or knowledge of oneself. We all interact with many people who play an
influential role in our lives. These people could challenge, criticize, motivate, inspire, or judge us.
Through this, we may develop a deeper understanding of ourselves and our abilities. By reflecting
upon difficult or unhappy interactions with another person, we might even be able to see these
interactions with new eyes. The idea of counterfeiting, in the sense of presenting a false face to the
world, appears frequently throughout Shakespeare s much ado about nothing. A particularly rich and
complex example of counterfeiting occurs as Leonato, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Again, influenced by the people around him. Similarly, during the film Good Will Hunting, Will
counterfeits himself to his new lover, Skylar. I have 12 older brothers, were scattered all over the place
but three live with me Hiding the shameful fact that he was an abused orphan. Benedick and Beatrice
both get soliloquies during the play after being tricked into thinking that one loves the other. Both
soliloquies contain the personal growth that they have just encountered through the help of the other
people around them. Benedick speaks of Beatrice as fair , virtuous , and wise , which confirms that he
has always been in love with her, but had never wanted to admit it to himself. Beatrice has come into
realisation of how she was and what she is becoming by discovering her love for benedick. Taming
my wild heart to thy loving hand; If thou dost love, my kindness shall incite thee The scene with Will
and Sean at the pond. Sean has a soliloquy through almost the entire thing; the only shot is an eye
level close up on Sean. It stays on him until he begins talking about love, then the camera very slowly,
staying at eye level, and pans to include Will in the shot. Michelangelo? You know a lot about him I
bet. Life s work, criticisms, political aspirations. But you couldn t tell me what it smells like in the
Sistine Chapel This effective technique creates the idea that Will is slowly being exposed by Sean s
words.

Fashion Fads In The 1960s And 1970s
Fashion is about the clothes, footwear, makeup and hairstyles. It is considered the pinnacle of
expressing oneself and is often associated with adolescents. In the late 1960s and 1970s fashion was
the epicentre of revolutionary change. The tremors felt by teenagers would result in the youth culture
explosion. Teenagers across the nation began to follow fashion fads such as the hippie look of the late
1960s. The fashion trend that quickly followed was the anti fashion of 1970s. From then on, many
other fashion fads began to emerge, from the rebellious punk to the dancing disco styles of mid 1970s.
This decade of recurring revolutionary change would forever change the youth culture of adolescents
from being obedient teens to rebellious adolescents

These are the words of Carrie Chapman Catt, an american feminist in the 1900 s. She had a powerful voice that made a huge impact on the way women are treated today s society. She changed the way women of today are viewed. Her voice made us equal, it made us superior to men. In the 1900 s women didn t have the same rights as men, we didn t have the right to vote. One voice was all we needed to change the way men viewed women and Carrie Chapman Catt was that one voice. Carrie was a women s rights activist, she only wanted to have equality. • 4. We Shall Overcome Summary The article, We Shall Overcome: Promoting an Agenda for Integrating Spirituality and Community Practice by Anthony J. Hill and Linda Plitt Donaldson (2012) detailed the role of spirituality in social work community practice and investigated previous research conducted integrating spirituality into community practice. The article described the relationship between organized religion and community outreach, since many religions offer assistance to needy members of their congregations and communities. An important claim of the authors was the lack of studies conducted about incorporating spirituality into community practice. Spirituality has been studied at micro levels of social work and been found to be influential in helping individuals, therefore, it is possible that it would be beneficial in macro practice as well, furthermore, studies should be done to determine spirituality s efficiency in community practice (Hill Donaldson, 2012). While they did not agree on everything the German tradition caused American sociologists to question their society and examine it further, American social philosophy took shape largely in response to stimulation from the teachings of the German tradition, (pp.252). German and American views on what makes a good society differ tremendously. The German sociologists believe that no one can determine whether a society is good or bad while the American sociologists believe a good society rests on the norms that a particular society has created. Germans believe sociologists cannot say whether a society is good or bad and that absolutely no one can determine. German sociologists, especially Weber believed that, the calling of scholars and scientists was best justified by the contributions their work makes to enhancing human self consciousness, (pp.208). They believed that individuals or groups of people create codes of morality where they all agree on it but that order is not something we can adhere to (lecture). These groups of people or the individuals collectively make up for themselves what is good and bad based on the norms that they wish to follow. They thought a normative self existed and believed individuals had freedom and that they determined their actions for themselves and that an individual can chose what rules they want to follow (lecture). However, it is no secret that humans tend to perform at the highest of their abilities when they are happy. It makes sense that a company would want their employees operating at a higher productivity rate. For the company higher productivity normally results in more income. One of the most common superconductors used in low temperature experiments for this purpose is niobium titanium alloy (NbTi). At very low temperatures, NbTi can transfer an order of magnitude less heat than non superconducting cables [2]. However, titanium and titanium alloys form oxides when exposed to air, and these oxides make soldering to NbTi cables nearly impossible. While solderless methods of connectorizing cables exist, the machines required are expensive and purpose built for one size of cable [3]. A better candidate for connectorization is electroplating, which has been one of the focuses of my research in Professor Lafyatis and Professor Gauthier s groups at The Ohio State University. By studying various electroplating techniques, I aim to create a simpler, less expensive procedure which would allow our group to produce these cables on demand to use with our SNSPDs. In the past, companies have used nickel electroplating of NbTi cables, which is described in a patent by Saubestre and Bulan in 1961 [4]. However, this technique has two issues that prevent it from being useful in for plating NbTi today. First, the metal being plated is nickel, which is ferromagnetic. In recent years, there have been many experiments at cold temperatures that are highly sensitive to magnetism, including research using SQUIDs, magnetometers, or nuclear magnetic resonance, making nickel a poor choice of plating ... • 16. A Report On Traditional Neighbourhood Search Methods Initial Population: We originally decide the size of the population, and then the method by which the members for the population are chosen. The primary idea of the size of the population always forms a trade off between the efficiency and the effectiveness of GA implementation. In general, it appears that there should be some ideal value for a given length or size of the population, on the grounds that too little a population would not permit adequate opportunity for exploring the search space effectively, while too big a population would damage the efficiency of the approach that no solution could be expected in an realistic amount of time limit [15]. Termination Condition: Traditional neighbourhood search methods are simple in the sense that they terminate when a local optimum is encountered. On the other hand, GAs are blind search stochastic optimization techniques that could in principle run for endlessly, but could converge fast to the solution with right termination criteria set. In practice, a termination criterion is mandatory to prevent the iterations get infinite; the common practices are to set a limit on the number of fitness evaluations or the computation time consumed, or to track the variability in the population and stop when this falls below a pre set boundary value. The meaning of diversity in the latter case is not always apparent, and it could relate either to the genotype or the phenotype, but the most effective way is through a measure of the ... Besides challenging the previously unquestioned naturalness of gender roles in society, feminist criticism is also concerned with female experiences of oppression, and seeks to expose how aspects of our culture are inherently patriarchal (Purdue University, 2010). I m Alex Barry Ramoi, we are all here today to review and debate our current laws affecting the Australian family. As you ve stated Mr Prime Minster, we are in a time of great social change and family life has become vastly different to that of our grandparents. The values of the new generation are changing and our laws need to be updated to be properly adequate for these changes. One of those laws that I personally feel requires immediate change is our current laws surrounding surrogacy as it has always been and always will be a common desire to have a family. • 29. Descriptive Essay On Ballet Slippers The young, fashionable man contrasted starkly against other High Ground patrons, who were nearly all dressed casually. However, this casual clothing took different forms; from the woman in the casual dress to the outdoorsy looking man, there were many variations on casual wear. For example, there was one young woman in the line who was wearing the same shorts and a tee combination as many other patrons. Hanging off the back of her backpack were a pair of pink leather shoes, soft and supple, with worn pads on the bottom where the material was gathered in from the top. They were hooked onto her backpack with a carabiner through the criss crossed elastic bands which pulled the two sides of the shoe together. Through iconic reasoning, I recognized them as ballet slippers. This lead me to assume that this young woman was a dancer, coming from or going to class or rehearsal. This indexical assumption was based on my recognizing the ballet slippers and understanding what ballet slippers are generally used for, as well as knowing that rarely, if ever, someone would hang a pair of well used ballet slippers off of their backpack as a sort of fashion statement. After mentally cataloging the woman in the summer dress, the hiker, the fashionable young man, and now the ballerina based on clothes and accessories, I tried to find a sign that was not clothing. I noticed the young woman at the table next to mine, who was industriously typing away on her laptop, referring every now and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

As a woman,Tomato Rodriguez travels across the country to see his dad in California. Being on the road transgresses the meaning of the road, whilst inventing one s identity. It is a space to develop a bond that is of mutual respect, sustained by love. In Flaming Iguanas the road is presented as a means of escape and reassertion. Tomato escapes domestication, common societal beliefs that are placed on women. As a bisexual, chicano woman on the road she is transgressing heteronormativity. In previous road novels the road is a place for white hetero men having an adventure. Tomato exercises her new found identity when she consummates with the Canadian John, challenging double standards that are placed on women. She writes if you re a woman traveling alone people will instantly want to kill you , she is not scared to challenge these myths and exercise her freedom, as a woman on the road (111). William Gaddis once said Power doesn t corrupt people, People corrupt power In Animal Farm and Mouseland both of the animals who have the power take over and create corrupt and unequal societies. This causes the societies to fall under the rules of greedy and selfish leaders. The authors of Animal Farm and Mouseland use the narrative techniques of characterization and conflict to illustrate messages about how power can destroy societies and take away the equality in the society. First, in Animal Farm and Mouseland the authors use characterization to show how power can destroy societies and can take away the equality that is in the society. For example, in Animal Farm, George Orwell uses the pigs as a way to show the different levels of importance. It shows how the other animals are always below the pigs. On pages 35 and 36 it states You do not imagine, I hope, that we pigs are doing this in a spirit of selfishness and privilege? Many of us actually dislike milk and apples. I dislike them myself. Our sole object in taking these things is to preserve our health. Milk and apples (this had been proven by science, comrades) contain substances absolutely necessary to the well being of a pig. We pigs are brainworkers. Orwell uses the words absolutely necessary to the well being of a pig making it seem the most important to the pigs and no other animals. This means that the pigs started to take the things they wanted and decided they were the ones who had all of the power. This shows that the power they created could give them more equal rights than the others. In a similar ways Tommy Douglas uses the cats to show how the other animals are below them and the cats are the ones who have power. In paragraph 3 of Mouseland it states A government made up of big, fat, black cats. Douglas states fat, black, cats. characterizing the cats are lazy and useless. This means that in Mouseland there was a society run by animals who didn t do what they needed and they were lazy. This shows that just because of the way the cats are characterized they aren t good leaders and they have the power. This shows that in Animal Farm and Mouseland the people in power were characterized as greedy and selfish, but came off to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. Waiting For Godot And Dr Strangelove Essay Significant texts in any period arise from particular ways of thinking and possess an enduring relevance. Following the dropping of the atomic bombs at the end of World War Two, global consciousness began to slowly change due to the realisation that civilisation could be destroyed at the press of a button. Texts that are able to grasp these changes, depicting their immediate context while also reflecting on universal questions, possess enduring value. Waiting for Godot, the 1952 stage play by Samuel Beckett, challenged the idea of human purpose and also questioned the relevance of scripture and religious institutions. The montage is accompanied by a non diegetic string arrangement of the song Try a Little Tenderness . Kubrick specifically creates an overt sexual innuendo to make light of great fear. This foreshadows the rest of the movie where frequent sexual themes and comedic tropes are utilised to undermine previously unquestioned figures of authority. Beckett s opening also foreshadows the rest of the play, as the setting begins the continual challenge of the institutional idea of human purpose, as it accentuates the lack of meaning an idea also extended by the characters. When Estragon struggles to take off his boot, he mutters Nothing to be done , which Vladimir mistakes for existential discourse and replies with I m beginning to come around to that opinion. All my life I ve put it from me. Beckett uses verbal irony to show how the most simple statement could be mistaken as a philosophical pondering on existence, which in turn is designed to pose the question of whether individuals truly have an essence. Similarly, Kubrick uses absurdist humour to force a questioning of what had been the bedrock of the western world: the political sphere. Hidden inside the gigantic horse was a small army of Greek soldiers. Just as in the myth, Trojan horse programs allow unauthorized users access to a computer system. While viruses and worms usually carry a payload, Trojan horses usually do not. Payloads are the part of the malicious code that modify, erase, or leak information from a system. They may also alter the state of a system, by displaying a simple undesired screen or causing programs to crash or behave abnormally. The lifecycle of viruses and worms is to infect as many systems or files as possible, and then to execute its payload at a predetermined trigger. The trigger may be a time or system event. Trojans, on the other hand, allow unauthorized, anonymous access to information systems. Another type of threat that is becoming increasingly popular is malicious code hybrids.
