The Contributions Of The Lincoln Electrical Company
What are its values and how is this related to increased performance by employees?
The Lincoln Electrical company has an organizational structure rooted in the values and principles set
out by its two founders, John Lincoln, engineer and inventor, and later his brother James F. Lincoln.
The company has a strong company culture that persists to present. Both brothers left their imprints on
the company, but the primary shaper of its values and principles, and success should be attributed to
James Lincoln.
It was James who understood that customer s needs were key and should be the driving force behind
the company s mission and values, and not simply profit. Because customer needs come first, and not
the needs of shareholders, production ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The quietly governed the way he treated employees and the way he conducted business.
Is Lincoln rare?
Lincoln Electric s commitment to its employees is rare and its concept of empowering employees goes
back to the company s origins. The sharing of company profits with its employees is a unique
characteristic. It was one of the first companies to pay bonuses and to allow workers the option of
buying company stock, which empowered employees by making them partners with management. It
was also one of the first to have retirement packages and to institute a formal employee merit
evaluation system.
What are some company artifacts?
Some artifacts of Lincoln are exceptional worker performance with little idle time. Another is the rate
of turnover with no employee ever having been fired or being dismissed. Employee performance is
extremely high and employees receive bonuses, a key part of its unique system. Worker productivity
has steadily increased, with figures having doubled since 1945. There is no need for a union as
employees have an excellent relationship with the company and are involved in making key decisions
that affect employees.
What type of organizational company profile does Lincoln Electric have?
Lincoln represents a company with a strong company culture which has persisted for many years. The
founding principles still govern the way it runs today and it remains an

Analysis Of All But My Life By Gerda Weissmann
This book is called All But My Life. The author is Gerda Weissmann. Gerda Weissmann Klein is one
of many survivors of the Holocaust. During the holocaust many Jewish people were killed. Gerda was
the only one that survived out of all her family. There were a number of reasons she survived this
horrible event. She survived the holocaust because of luck, family, and courage.
The first reason why she survived the holocaust was because of luck. There have been many things
that predicted or showed that Gerda was lucky during this time. One example was when Gerda were
using cards and it told Ilse that she was unlucky and told Gerda that she was lucky. Ilse says to Gerda,
Remember the cards in Bolkenhain. They told us I am unlucky, but you you

The End of the World Essay
The End of the World
In writing definitively about American films of the nineteen fifties, Douglas Brode refers to the
societal hysteria resulting from fear of both the communist threat and the possibility of nuclear war.
Accompanying this general state of mind was the emergence of the science fiction film as a major
genre. Titles in the genre dealt with fantasy topics ranging from alien invasion (The Thing, 1951, or
Invasion of the Body Snatchers, 1956), to biologial missing links (The Creature from the Black
Lagoon, 1954), to the bizarre side effects of nuclear contamination (The Incredible Shrinking Man,
1957), or to actual nuclear war (The World, the Flesh and The Devil, 1959).
Another interesting example of this last category ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Strada describes a spectrum of discourses ranging from the extreme right, constituted of the governing
elite and the politicians notion of the Pax Atomica, to the extreme left, occupied by the type of panic
about the bomb which resulted in some of the more grizzly works of science fiction literature. The
other specific positions he addresses are the sugar coated science fiction films (left of centre), the
avoidance seeking general public (centre), and the atomic scientists with their varied acceptance of the
H bomb as a necessary evil (right of centre). Regardless of one s position along the spectrum, the
possibility of nuclear war constituted a daily reality in the life of the average American in the nineteen
fifties. Government agencies issued specifications for the household bomb shelter, school children
experienced weekly drills teaching them the most effective positions to brace themselves against the
physical force of an atomic explosion, and true to form, the cinema presented society with various
reflections of face of the nuclear potential or the nuclear threat.
In most of the science fiction of the time, a primary concern related to the threat of the end of the
world is the belief that humanity, in its bizarre mix of madness and complacency, has created and
perfected the means of its own destruction. As a result, even in instances where the nuclear fiction
casts blame on an

Graph Lab Report
All three graphs displayed a similar graph shape. The absorbance values increased with an increase in
temperature. Each graph plateaued at various temperatures. C. perfringens plateaued first, followed by
the DNA of the calf thymus and finally E. coli.
2. Tm values
C. perfringens 80.5°C
Calf Thymus 87.5°C
E. coli 91°C
GC content
C. perfringens GC content = (Tm 69.3) × 2.44 = (80.5 69.3) × 2.44 = 28.55 %
Calf Thymus GC content = (Tm 69.3) × 2.44 = (87.5 69.3)×2.44
= 44.41%
E. coli GC content = (Tm 69.3) × 2.44
= (91 69.3)×2.44
= 52.95%
Discussion:
The Tm of the genomic DNA from each species differed depending on the GC content of the sample.

A higher pH has a negative effect on the DNA s stability, which results in the lowering of the melting
temperature. Raising the pH strips the H+ shared between the nitrogenous base electronegative centres
from the hydrogen bond. The loss of hydrogen bonds between two complementary strands results in
separation. The increase in pH will deprotonate the bases and will exist as negatively charged
conjugate bases. As the deprotonated species, the hydrogen bonding between the bases G and C; and A
and T are eliminated.
The curves for all pH values displayed a similar shape. The higher the pH, the sooner the curve
reached a plateau i.e. the maximum absorbance was reached. At pH 9.3, the lowest melting
temperature of 82°C was seen. At pH 5.4, the highest melting temperature of 90.5°C was seen. This
confirms the inverse relationship between Tm and pH conditions of the DNA strand.
The absorption is decreased due to base stacking interactions. When DNA is denatured, these
interactions are disrupted and an increase in absorbance is

Malvolio
In Julien and my Vine, we wanted to show how Malvolio s by the book lifestyle and his love for
Olivia led to his humiliation. At the start of the Vine, we put a picture of a man, Malvolio, looking
longingly at a woman, Olivia. Throughout the play we have seen Malvolio s apparent love and care
for Olivia and her household. We continued with Malvolio s other attempt at recognition, including
the yellow stockings, the smiling, his serious attitude, his rejection of love, his sense of order, and
finally, his want for loved. All these attempts to obtain Olivia s recognition are potential causes for his
humiliation.
From the first act to the final scene of the play we can see the apparent love Malvolio has for Olivia.
Understandably, Malvolio wants the best for her being that he is one of her top servants. When the

Malvolio is brought in by Fabian to see that the love of his life, Olivia, is with a new man. The men
think their jokes are all fun and games until the final scene when Malvolio confronts Olivia about the
letter. Olivia who is unaware of the jokes being played, responds with, Have I, Malvolio? No!... this is
not my writing... Tis Maria s hand (5.1. 318. 333 344). Malvolio doesn t know how to react to the
news of his crush being taken away and that the letter was phoney. This doesn t seem to get much
attention from the surrounding crowd because immediately after they start talking about other matters.
The only thing Malvolio can say is, I ll be reveng d on the whole pack of you! (5.1.365). The jokes
played on Malvolio were taken to another level when they created Olivia s false love for him. Was it
this or was it that Malvolio was so blind from the love that he couldn t see anything? Either way
Malvolio s love for Olivia concluded with him being humiliated in front of the whole cast of

Definition Of Stress
My definition of stress is something that continues to worry me until it solves or until I try to forget it.
My stress levels all depend on the day. If I m having a good day I tend to forget about all the
negativity versus if I m having a bad day. My stress range from small things such as social life and car
problems to big things such as school and health. My number one stress problems is my anxiety. My
anxiety stops me from doing a lot of things, it sometimes can send me into a slight depression mood. It
affects me in so many ways because it causes me to stress about other things such as my weight. My
weight is something I ve been struggling with my whole life. Last summer I reach my heaviest weight
ever, it caused me to sit in this house.

The Twilight Zone By Rod Serling
Imagine a clear summer night, gazing up at the stars when all of a sudden something goes zooming
across the sky. A shooting star perhaps or could it be something more. This is how Monsters are Due
on Maple Street begins and ends, with the unknown. Now, there is no evidence to prove or disprove
the existence of alien life forms, but one young boy puts doubt into the minds of everyone on Maple
Street. The fear, paranoia, and suspicion the characters experience is directly related to real life events
that took place in the nineteen fifties. To understand The Twilight Zone, it is important to look at the
writer and producer, Rod Serling, to gaze into his past and receive answers. Rod Serling was born
December 25, 1924 in Syracuse, New York. After graduating from high school in 1942, Serling joined
the United States Army. Experiencing the horrible acts of World War II made Serling concerned for a
moral society. Upon returning from war, Rod Serling attended Antioch College. His senior year he
began writing for CBS where he developed his unique style of writing. By the beginning of the
nineteen fifties Serling made a full time career out of his writings. He then went on to write for NBC.
This was his break out stage, when he wrote the hit television series, Patterns. Throughout the fifties
Serling wrote about serious issues in society. Tired of this type of writing, Serling began writing
science fiction and fantasy. According to PBS, Science Fiction allowed Rod

Exploring the Concept of Satire in A Modest Proposal by...
A Modest Proposal by Jonathan Swift, and Top of the Food Chain by T. Coraghessan Boyle, both are
short stories that explore the concept of satire. Satire can be defined as a kind of writing that ridicules
human weakness, vice, of folly in order to bring about social reform. It is a kind of writing to bring
about change to society. Even though both are short stories, they easily get the faults of society across
to its readers. In A Modest Proposal, Swift is offering an outrageous solution to the problems of
human misery. He proposes that people should start eating babies, and using them for everything that
they are worth on a daily basis. Swift creates a pamphlet and states six reasons as to why this is a
brilliant idea. He states that money wouldn t be wasted on food, the number of Catholics would be
reduced, it would be great inducement to marriages, there would be more food so the economy would
increase, poor tenants would have money for their landlords, and it would be an improvement for the
tavern business. Swift wants everyone to know how badly the Irish people are being treated by the
English. He wants to change the reader s point of view through this sarcastic satirical pamphlet. The
authors purpose of A Modest Proposal, is to try to change society. Swift is trying to reform the British
official s involvement in Ireland. People are dying, and nothing is being done about it. He is trying to
shock readers with a twisted story, but also bring about change

Enron Essay
As Bethany McLean and Peter Elkind portray in The Smartest Guys in the Room: The Amazing Rise
and Scandalous Fall of Enron, there was a chain reaction of events and a hole that dug deeper with
time in the life span of, at one time the world s 7th largest corporation, Enron. The events were
formulated by an equation with many factors: arbitrary accounting practices, Wall Street s evolving
nature and Enron s lack of successful business plans combined with, what Jeff Skilling, CEO of
Enron, believed was the most natural of human characteristics, greed. This formula resulted in fraud,
deceit, and ultimately the rise and fall of Enron.
Kenneth Lay created Enron in 1985 as a result of the merger of Houston Natural Gas and Internorth.

Next came California s rolling blackouts caused by Enron s traders. By turning the power off and on
in California, they could control the price of electricity, essentially stealing people s money. Because
they could manipulate the price, they made hefty bets on it, and in turn made over $2 billion dollars
for Enron. Just before the fall of Enron, the insiders sold off nearly $1 billion dollars prior to the
annunciation of the bankruptcy of Enron. What caused so many executives and employees to behave
in such a fraudulent way? As Skilling put it, the biggest motivator for humans is money. Enron s
executives received large quantities of stock options, motivating them to manipulate earnings which
would cause an increase in the stock price. The nature of Enron s executives also played a big role in
influencing employees to display similar characteristics of aggression, arrogance, greed and
dishonesty. Executives at Enron were known to take extreme dirt biking trips to places like Mexico,
where they could dangerously travel 1200 miles of rugged terrain. Stories of broken bones, stitches
and flipping jeeps became legendary at Enron, and fed the macho personality of the employees. Top
management gave its managers blank orders, to just do it (60). In turn, employees attempted to not
only crush outsiders, but eachother. Skilling encouraged this behavior, saying he wanted them to

The economic interest of the Unites States greatly outweighs the benefit of maintaining a Cuban

failed and the consequences of a decades old embargo land squarely on the general population of Cuba
and the business interests of the Unites States. American business have much to gain with the removal

Definition Essay On Phobia
Phobia. Three syllables, six words, one meaning. For most people saying that you have a phobia is just
like saying how nervous you are for your math final. According to Google, a phobia is an extreme or
irrational fear of or aversion to something ; when you really think about it, a phobia isn t the last
minute anxiety over question four. A phobia is a fear that pulls at your stomach for hours at a time and
no matter what you do you can t get rid of it; it s sort of like your child. When a person has a phobia,
they ll do anything to avoid it. Sometimes when they attempt to dodge it, they make the thing they
were dodging happen. This can all lead up to therapy where the person will confront their phobia and
deal with the problem like a man. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
You are always trapped in the world of endless suffering. There is no way out. Therapy for this phobia
is almost useless because making someone think more and more about what they are afraid of can
drive them to do things they normally wouldn t do. Imagine being stuck in a room with a therapist for
a whole hour where they are making you think about how you will kill your kid. Obviously this
wouldn t work, but hey, trust the person with the degree right? Wrong. This can make the fear worse
over time. Because the patient is so scared of hurting their kid, they might lock the kid in their room
and completely ignore them to keep them from being killed. Parent of the year awards are being given
out as we speak.
It is very scary to have this phobia and knowing that you will have to deal with it for the rest of your
life. What doesn t help is when people laugh at the phobia. This is very serious, just like child abuse
and cancer. You can t know what those things are and laugh about it without looking like an asshole.
Same goes with this and many other fears because most people go through a lot with their fears. So
next time someone decides to share their fears with you, instead of laughing you could see what you
could do to help. I can promise you that making fun of the person will not help the

Edward Scissorhands Character Analysis
Individuality can be an admired gift, but it is often buried under society s illogically perfect
expectations. The famous film director, Tim Burton, known for directing movies such as Edward
Scissorhands and Alice in Wonderland, proves in several thrilling adventures. He shows that
uniqueness is a strength, not a weakness, even if it means being an outcast or misfit. Through two of
his films, Miss Peregrine s Home for Peculiar Children and Edward Scissorhands, showcases the
message of identity is preferable to conformity.

Edward s actions speak very loudly, louder than his odd hands, dark clothing, or strange/awkward
behaviors. The show of loyalty proves Burton s message of identity. This message is also showcased
in the movie Miss Peregrine s Home for Peculiar Children. Basically, all of the Peculiars are the
outcasts of the film. When Jake first enters the loop and meets Miss Peregrine, she says a quote that
beautifully supports the message. As Miss Peregrine explains to Jake what Peculiars are, she says, We
are what s known in common towns as peculiar. Because our abilities don t fit in the outside world, we
live in places like this where no one can find us. Miss Peregrine. This quote helps to show the
audience that the misfits couldn t fit in, but as the movie continues, the peculiars prove themselves as
brave, merciful people with strong characters. In contrast, the times we do get to see the townspeople,
they seem to be reckless, moody, unstable people. The words both sets of characters say shows just
how different they are and just how much of a good thing being an outcast can be.
The contrasting settings between the two main different places also helps to accent the difference
between individuality and conformity. Typically, in each of Burton s films, there is a dark, eerie
setting, and a bright, vivid setting. The example of vivid versus eerie settings

Life Of A Serial Killer

urge to be unearthed by the idea, what makes a person effectively commit such repulsive acts? There

Using Population Control to Achieve Environmental...
Environmental sustainability is when a person, community or area is able to meet the needs of the
present, without compromising the needs of the future. Overconsumption will lead to hardship in the
future, and possibly to the destruction of the planet s finite resources; and if we continue using our
resources as at current rates, which have been estimated to be 4 planets worth of resources, this will be
inevitable. Populations are all the inhabitants of a specific area/country and this population can be
controlled in various methods such as population policies, like the ones in China, Kerala and France;
as well as control via migration by putting on limits.

On the other hand, Canada has a fairly low population density of just 3.75 people per square kilometer
and with high resources, Canada is environmentally sustainable; some even say that Canada is under
populated and therefore Canada is lenient on in migration.
Similarly to this, Thomas Malthus (1766 1834) had the theory that when population overshoots a
certain point (usually food production) there will be catastrophic effects. The club of Rome, in 1968
published a report called the limit of growth , which stated that population growth will lead to an
increase in food demand and this will eventually lead to resource exhaustion, which is obviously not
environmentally sustainable. To prevent resource exhaustion, the Club of Rome decided that we have
to regulate population growth and reduce fertility and that is what China s One Child Policy, and
Kerala s non enforced population policy was aiming to do. Similarly, the anti Malthusianist Ester
Boserup was a resource optimist, with research based on studies of shifting cultivation. Her hypothesis
was that population growth would result in an increase demand for food and to meet this demand,
improved agriculture productivity would be needed. A higher agricultural productivity means an
increase in methods of agriculture like the slash and burn technique, which often are not
environmentally sustainable at all.
All these population / resource theories

learning that he has a son, quits his job in an attempt to be present in the baby s life, unlike his own
father. With little persuasion from his landlord and roommate, he resorts to bank robbery in pursuit to
provide for his new family. After eventually being caught and killed by a trigger happy rookie cop,

lawyer whose father was also a cop, lies about who shot first to save both his reputation and his career,
deals with the guilt by focusing on his ambitions and shutting off his wife and newborn. The final
narrative transition, where both sons, now teenagers, meet and form a friendship despite not knowing
their father s pasts. Dane Dehaan, a privileged but rebellious thug with a distant father, and Emery, a
loner pothead struggling with both his own identity and of his biological father,

Historical Inaccuracies In Saving Private Ryan
Saving Private Ryan is a film that takes place in WWII and the main conflict is trying to bring back
Private Ryan back safely. In the film many battles go on and we get to see first hand through the main
character Captain Miller how gruesome it got. First few scenes we get a good look at how hard it is
going to be for men fighting. D Day June 6, 1944 Normandy, France was the first battle, and in the
scene that takes place here is for the most part accurate. Portrayal of the Invasion of Normandy seems
to be very similar to the actual event. During the real battle, the plan was for the Ranger companies to
be the first wave with the goal of taking over Pointe du Hoc and taking the higher ground. The
soldiers stormed Omaha Beach and that is when the horrors of war began. Similarly the movie shows
the men arriving on the LCVPs and storming the beach, and also suffering heavy casualties at the
same time. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Theme Of Symbolism In Great Expectations
Charles Dickens s Great Expectations contains a lot of symbolism throughout the book, there are
symbols of isolation, manipulation, and people wanting to be something they are not. The names of
the characters in the story Great Expectations symbolize who they are and how they act. These are all
seen in the book through the characters of Estella, Abel Magwitch, Miss Havisham, Pip, and Biddy.
Estella, French for star, implies radiance and exquisiteness like a star, likewise, Dickens s character,
Estella, in Great Expectations is inaccessible and cold like a star, too. Also, like a star, men love to
gaze upon her, but cannot touch her because she has been trained by her adoptive mother, Miss
Havisham, to have no feeling and no empathy for others. She has been taught to be cold and
calculating and to break the heart of any man who makes the mistake of falling in love with her.
Additionally, Estella symbolizes isolation and manipulation; she has been locked away for years in the
impenetrable prison of Miss Havisham s making, far away from the carefree and caring life a young
girl deserves. She teases and manipulates boys and later, men into loving her only become ice cold
and break their hearts. Estella tells Pip, that I have no softness there, no sympathy sentiment nonsense.
(Chapter 29) Estella manipulates Pip as a young boy and plays with his feelings as she leads him on to
make him believe that he has a chance of loving her and being loved in return when she allows

Greatest Conceivable Being Research Paper
There are many ways to go about justifying a belief in the Greatest Conceivable Being. There are
numerous disputes to argue a theistic position, but there are also many fallacies that people use in an
unjustified way to prove the existence of God. Using strong evidence mainly from the cosmological
argument, the theory that everything happens as a cause of something before it leading all the way
back to a first existence, and the argument of design, stating that the complexity of nature could only
be explained by a sentient designer, a Greatest Conceivable Being must exist.
The cosmological argument discusses the idea that everything is an effect of a cause. Everything
happens due to something else, and all of that had to have begun somewhere at sometime. If you go
back all the way to the beginning of time and the commencement of the universe, something had to
have happened to caused for this to occur. This is what is believed to be the work of a Greatest
Conceivable Being. Everything in the world that exists, exists because something else caused it,
including the world itself. Thomas Aquinas established his own version of this cosmological theory by
saying, whatever is moved must be moved by another...but this cannot go on to infinity, because there
would be no first mover ( The Five Ways ). This theory ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Existentialism In Hamlet
Hamlet is widely regarded as one of William Shakespeare s most famous and best written tragedies.
Its importance to history, due in part to the fact that the introspection of the main character upon his
dilemmas was rarely addressed in other popular plays, is felt to this day. Similar to the likes of Romeo
and Juliet, Macbeth, Julius Caesar, Othello, King Lear, and other Shakespearean tragedies, it has been
the subject of much critical analysis and literary review from many approaches. In this essay, the
historic, existentialist, traditional revenge tragedy, psychoanalytic, and archetypal approaches will be
used to understand the tragedy of Hamlet. The time period in which the play was written is known as
either the English Renaissance or the Early Modern Era. The existence of both names seems to prove
that Hamlet was penned in a period of transition for England, and the characters within the tragedy all
but confirm this conjecture. Hamlet, the titular character, represents the modern half of the transition,
acquiring an education from a city where the transition was most prominent, while Claudius represents
the medieval half, claiming and subsequently abusing the traditional position of king through means of
betrayal and secrecy (Bernath 220). The time period also suggests that the introspection of the main
character upon his dilemma s in such a way as to question his own existence initially had an incredible
resonance with audiences, as such commentary on the human

Depersonalization In Frrantz Fanon s Black Skin, White Man
Frantz Fanon was one of the leading theorists of postcolonialism. His career as a psychiatrist gave him
a unique perspective and allowed him to focus on the identity formation of the colonized subject and
racial injustice. Fanon s insight and view of colonization helped to further explain course material. In
Fanon s famous work Black Skin, White Mask, it became obvious how prevalent and severe racism
was at that time (Julien). According to Fanon, it led to depersonalization which was so strong that
colored people ultimately had to wear a white mask in order to survive. I believe that it s very sad that
colored people weren t allowed to fully embrace who they were are and weren t able to live peacefully
with the whites. Nobody should have to pretend to be someone whom they aren t. In Frantz Fanon s
book titled The Wretched of the Earth, Frantz Fanon asserts that decolonization will always entail
violent armed struggles between the colonized and the colonists. He makes several main points to
substantiate such a bold and sweeping claim. Fanon states, At whatever level we study decolonization,
it is quite simply the substitution of one species of mankind by another. The substitution is absolute,
total, and seamless (Fanon 1). When colonization first begins in a certain region, fights soon break out
between the natives and the colonists in hopes to preserve their land and freedom. When the natives
lose, they then have to follow the colonist s rules and regulations

The Anunciation And Expulsion From Paradise Summary
Giovani di Paolo s The Annunciation and Expulsion from Paradise is currently in the National Gallery
of Art in Washington DC. According to the panel next to the artwork, the piece was finished in 1435
CE and made of tempera on panel. This Sienese altarpiece from the start of the Italian Renaissance
shows the experimentation of form at that time. Giovanni di Paolo uses golden texture to display
divinity, line to illustrate architectural perspective, and a strategic use of scale throughout the
composition in order to portray the importance of the religious context. The golden foil that
compliments tempera works at the time draws your eye to specific points in the piece. Drawing your
eye to the upper left corner, the golden material then aids the eye in traveling down towards the
bottom right corner. Because the largest golden form is in the upper right corner, your sight starts
there. This is where god is represented and the symbol for divinity starts. Divinity implied by golden
nimbuses or halos continue throughout the piece around the head of divine figures. The only two
figures on the left without nimbuses represent Adam and Eve who are no longer divine one kicked out
of paradise. This relates to the second part of the title, Expulsion from Paradise. For obvious cultural
reasons, the angels have the heavenly halos. One angel is specifically known, Archangel Gabriel,
because of the annunciation scene with Mary in the center. Joseph, at the right, and Mary both also

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Biometrics
One major disadvantage of usual authentication techniques, they can t confirm that the demand
identification of user is from the legal owner [11]. Therefore, there was a need for a kind of technique
that can t be forgotten or lost and can identify users based on their unique characteristic [37].
Biometric is an automated method for easily verifying and recognizing the identity of a living person
based on his physiological or behavioral. Biometrics are excellent candidates for providing an extra
level of security, especially when used in conjunction with traditional methods for authentication [10].
Generally, most biometric based authentication systems consist of two phases, Enrolment Phase and
Verification Phase Figure 5. In the Enrolment/ Training Phase, users deal with different kind of
sensors depends on the kind of biometric used for authentication system. Those biometric sensors scan
and capture the repeated user s basic login data till finishing the system number of training sessions

from the scanned biometric data using an algorithm. The feature vector used for generating a template
for each user of the system. This template is encrypted using the public key obtained from cloud
server then send back to cloud server to be stored in the template database for later use.

Interacting with Dementia Essays
When I was 18 year old, I applied to work at an assisted living facility called, Crestwood Senior living

asked my coworker, why some of the residents were acting different and she explained to me that
some of the resident have dementia. Now, at that time I didn t really know what dementia was because

One way that people who are working with the elderly community can interact with individuals with
dementia is by playing games such as memory games that can help them keep their mind s going.
According to Karen Miller, publisher of Memory Jogging Puzzles, stated that Studies have shown,
that memory games help slow down memory loss and brain deterioration. These games can range
anywhere from being low tech, or high tech. Some games that the help stimulate the mind that

game that is often seen in quiz shows and in educational programs. In the basic form, cards are laid
face down on a surface and two cards are flipped face up over each turn. The object of the game is to
turn over pairs of matching cards. This game is used to exercise the brain and help recollect and
concentrate individuals with dementia. Some other games that I personally play with my residents at

Although, games are a great way to interact with elderly individuals with dementia, a second way that
people who are working with the elderly community can interact with elderly individuals with
dementia is by bring familiar objects such as a photographs and accessories to help trigger memories

The Transformation Of Women In Jack Kerouac s On The Road
Throughout Jack Kerouac s classic novel On the Road, the women are portrayed as weak,
unintelligent, and manipulated targets to the dominant male figure. The women in the novel are clearly
depicted for the male s pleasure. Life on the road for these characters was not only for the
unbelievable adventures that were awaiting or for the opportunity to experiment with different drugs
and alcohol, but mainly for the sexual objectification of meeting new women everywhere they
traveled. By controlling these women, the men have the power to manipulate the women s body
mentally and physically. Yet, this process fails and creates a destruction of the characters who are
unable to find their inner self. Dean and Sal show the most important change of character towards the
end of the novel by the decisions they made earlier on the road. These decisions effectively made them
change character and underestimate the effect of manipulation.
One of the first occurrences of female manipulation transpires when Dean comes home to Marylou
after spending an abundance of time with Camille. Dean is known to leave his wife and pursue any
women he wants, whenever he wants. This is one of the many examples of how Camille and Marylou
are used only for sexual treatment. Marylou is the most familiar victim of Dean s fluctuations to see
his wife but for once Dean had a change of heart and suddenly had an explosive yen to see his sweet
first wife Marylou again (111). This isn t uncommon for Dean to get

Vasculitis Essay
By Jonas Wilson, Ing. Med.
Vasculitis affecting large arteries
A large vessel essentially refers to the aorta and its largest branches that are directed to the head and
neck and the extremities. The hallmark in terms of pathology with large vessel vasculitides is that
chronic inflammatory lesions are primarily found inside of the walls of vessels and not on the outside.
This is a key distinction that can be used in order to separate large vessel from small vessel
pathologies, which present with inflammation on the outside of the vessel wall in addition to being
found within. The two main large artery vasculitides that will be discussed below are giant cell
arteritis (GCA) and Takayasu disease.
Giant cell arteritis
Also known as temporal arteritis or Horton s arteritis, giant cell arteritis is a fairly common systemic
vasculitide with a higher prevalence in women and peak incidence almost exclusively after the fifth
decade of life. GCA typically has a gradual onset, but an abrupt one is not unheard of. Most of its

patients, the condition is considered a medical emergency. Ocular manifestations also indicate
increased risk for central nervous system complications such as ischemic stroke. Steroid therapy with
calcium and vitamin D supplements is the cornerstone of treatment for GCA. Moreover, in terms of
prognosis, there is no associated increase in mortality of patients that are treated with timely diagnosis

The Advance Traveler Information Systems
The motive and idea proposed through this paper is to implement Advanced Traveler Information

Generally both, descriptive or prescriptive concept of pre trip traveler information has a positive

properly and make better informed transit choices. En route visual data and information offer tested
guidance, saves travel time, helps to avoid congestion, improves traffic performance and provide more
efficiency than paper maps, written instructions or previous traveler experiences (BoozAllen
Hamilton, 1998). However, recent studies have revealed people s lack of awareness about the system
and its diminished usage.
The efforts and rework carried to overcome this weak link register a pitfall in the prevailing system

The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas Analysis
Living in a life of fairytale, a life that mirrors a life that is unreal and too good to be true. The short
story by Urusla K. Le Guin The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas won the Hugo award for best
short story in 1974. In this short story Le Guin writes about a town Omelas that is portrayed as too
good to be true. Omelas sounds in my words like a city in a fairy tale, long ago and far away, once

tend to live for our own happiness even if that means harming others in the process. We strive for
success in this world, we want money and we want to be the best. Our happiness is important to us but
we are willing to take from others in order to get to our happiness. Only pain is intellectual, only evil

Contributions Of The Roman Aqueducts

Roman Aqueduct Before the Roman aqueduct was engineered, the ancient Roman people depended on

water quality were a daily problem of the Romans, and the droughts and drainage problems were even
deadly. The engineering s curiosity that implemented the rise of the Roman Empire and sustained the

used the Greek designs like the columns and arches by the Etruscans. The aqueducts were built from a
sequence of brick, stone, and special volcanic cement. The aqueducts were very important to the
ancient Romans and profoundly impact their daily living. Ancient Roman aqueducts were constructed
to carry water from far away springs and mountains into the cities. From 311 B.C. to 226 A.D., the
Romans had built eleven significant aqueducts around Roman Empire. The water would supply the
city s fountains, gardens, public baths, bathroom, and a house of wealthy Roman. The water from the

The Aspects Of Gender Roles In The Return Of Martin Guerre
Throughout history, our society has created gender norms that are followed consistently by members
of communities. Though they differ from place to place, we recognize trends that seem almost
prescribed to certain genders. Specifically, in the 1600s, men and women had explicit roles that were
designated by people of stature. These expectations were followed loyally and people who failed to
follow suit were shunned or sometimes even suffered seriously punishment including crude public
beatings that were mot only pain inflicting but also status damaging (Rocke, Gender and Sexual
Culture, 159). Looking deeper into the novel The Return of Martin Guerre, we identify from the start
the expectations that are in place and how they play a role in the story. In comparison of Characters,
taking into consideration the standard that had been set for men of this era, we notice that Pansette
(Arnaud du Tilh) is an almost faultless example of what is expected for men and in contrast, Martin
Guerre fails to meet these standards. First, some background on what was expected of men at this
time. Natalie Zemon Davis describes expectancies of men through a number of instances in Martin
Guerre s life. Men had large roles to fulfill both in their households and in the community. At home,
the male was considered the lord of the household and was expected to provide for the family. In the

The Health Promotion And Behavior Change
Like never before have there been so many demands or efforts on those in health care to facilitate
behavior changes, or so many potential strategies from which to choose from. Health care
professionals now realize that multiple interventions at multiple levels are often needed to initiate and
sustain behavior change in their patients, in their community, in their family and ultimately in their
own lives. Behavior change is our best hope in reducing problems such as preventable diseases,
chronic illnesses, health disparities, violence, and death around the world. In this Age of Information,
where society has shifted to an economy based on information computerization, gamification has
become a prevalent force in promoting such changes.
Although gamification is a new term for me, it is apparent, through my research that it has become a
recent topic in health promotion and behavior change Gamification is a broad umbrella term used to
encompass the process of using gaming elements to motivate and engage people in non game contexts
(King, Greaves, Exeter, and Darzi, 2013). It includes the application of gaming mechanics and
thinking to change behavior and can turn the monotonous or ordinary way of doing an activity such as

prompts and competition between other players. Consequently, better health behavior saves money,

Flaubert as Emma in Madame Bovary Essay

During the Nineteenth Century, Europe experienced a literary movement known as Romanticism. This
movement valu[ed] emotion, intuition, and imagination (Rosenbaum 1075). Gustave Flaubert, born in
1821, grew up during this innovative movement and became entranced by the romantics.
Unfortunately, Romanticism was a passing affair in France, and young Flaubert realized it consistently
encouraged illusions it could not satisfy (Bart 54). His later disgust for the movement would lead
Flaubert to writing his greatest novels.

Meursault s Death
In the novel, The Stranger, by Albert Camus, Meursault s murder of the Arab helps to illuminate the
meaning of the work as a whole. The Stranger tells the story of Meursault, a man who passively lives
his life until he kills a man and is then put on trial and sentenced to death. The murder of the Arab is
the climax of the novel and signals a shift in Meursault s thought and character. Through Meursault s
killing of the Arab, Camus brings attention to the absurdity of social expectations and shows how it is
possible to change from passivity to consciousness in order to give one s life meaning.

drastically awakes him. After the death scene, Meursault becomes more aware of the importance of his
choices and how to give his life meaning. He begins to reminisce over memories that give his life
meaning and evaluates his relationship with his mother, Marie, and religion. To Meursault, the sound
of the bullet leaving the gun marks a new beginning, characterized by consciousness and awareness.
Much like Sisyphus, in The Myth of Sisyphus, Meursault is now aware of his burden and his existence

Social Factors Affecting The Mortality Burden Of...
Toronto in 1902 was a city on the cusp of transformation. It was a city marked, like many large
Western cities by the high probability of death at a young age. At this time period life in large cities
was characterized by many deaths due to infectious disease. According to the death records collected
from the year 1902 to 1904 by the city of Toronto, 8.1% of the total population died from
gastroenteritis or typhoid. For the purposes of comparison, it is important to note that the mortality
burden of all infectious diseases at this time period was extremely high, with these cases making up to
41.3% of the total population mortality. There were numerous social conditions that affected this
reality, and in this particular case study, had the power to either increase or decrease the mortality
burdens of infectious disease. These social factors will be further studied in the paper, and they
include, but are not limited to: housing, socioeconomic status, diet, age, water quality, waste
management, hygiene, rapid industrialization, increased population growth, immigration, scientific
advancements, increased classification and record keeping, and the role of government. The common
thread between all of these realms and typhoid, is the focus of this paper: public health. It is because
of the particularly high rate of infection and death due to typhoid and gastroenteritis that I have chosen
to study this particular disease over other options present in the data sample. This paper

My Journey To Six Flags-Personal Narrative
Wake up babe! We re going to Six Flags today! , my boyfriend yelled excitedly. Those two words
instantly made my stomach knot. I was not a fan of roller coasters and I knew exactly what Henry, my
boyfriend, wanted to do as soon as we got there. Krystal and Emily, my two younger cousins, had
spent the night with us so we could all go together the next day. I anxiously got up and started to get
ready. Everybody was really excited. I wanted to be just as excited as they were but some how I
couldn t manage to gain enough courage.
Six Flags was about an hour away from where we lived. I decided to listen to music to try to soothe
my nerves. I m going to try to get on a roller coaster at least once before we leave. , I said under my
breath. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I looked up at the roller coaster and all its loops and turns and jumped with excitement. Let s go! , I
exclaimed. As we were walking up the stairs, a part of me wanted to turn back, but i was determined
to get on this one ride. I stood at the gates, waiting for it to be my turn and before i knew it, I was the
next one. I went through the gates and went straight to my seat. Henry sat right next to me and held
my hand. I was ready. The ride started to take off and I knew there was no turning back now. Up and
up we went. The ground below us got further away. I held on tightly to my boyfriends hand and down

Taxicab Classification Essay
Our analysis is based on a sample size of fifteen jurisdictions. These cities were chosen on the basis of
geographic diversity and relevance: three major cities from the Northeast, three cities from the
Midwest, three cities from the South, and six cities from the West. Overall, these jurisdictions exhibit
a broad range of approaches to entry management and a variety of regulatory systems. Most of these
cities do not institute taxicab caps; in the sample, only six out of fifteen cities have caps.
Analysis of Accepted Practices Findings Types of Caps Standards for Setting and Modifying Caps
Each sampled jurisdiction has its own process of determining the number of taxi permits in a closed
market. In most cases, the number of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To address these proposed actions, state agencies prepare an environmental impact statement that
outlines all potential environmental consequences of the proposed actions, potential alternatives,
unavoidable environmental effects, and the steps to be taken by state agencies to mitigate the
consequences. In order for additional taxi permits to be issued in a city, the impacts on socioeconomic
conditions, transportation, public health, neighborhood character, air quality and greenhouse gas
emissions would be assessed comprehensively. Transportation related variables including impact on
traffic, parking, pedestrians or bicycles, and transit facilities would be examined as well. Example:
New York City.
3. Public Convenience Necessity ( PCN )
In order to operate a taxicab in certain jurisdictions, a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity
( CPCN ) is required. To apply for the certificate, a new entrant must first prove that he/she is
qualified by demonstrating his/her ability to provide a continuous taxicab service, lack of criminal
record, etc. Once qualified, the applicant must attend a Public Convenience and Necessity ( PCN )
hearing to make a case that there is a need for additional service. The burden of proof falls on the
applicant. During the hearing, stakeholders such as existing service providers are allowed to intervene,
and this may create a significant obstacle for the applicant. Examples: Chicago, Las Vegas and New
Orleans.

The End of the World Essay The End of the World In writing definitively about American films of the nineteen fifties, Douglas Brode refers to the societal hysteria resulting from fear of both the communist threat and the possibility of nuclear war. Accompanying this general state of mind was the emergence of the science fiction film as a major genre. Titles in the genre dealt with fantasy topics ranging from alien invasion (The Thing, 1951, or Invasion of the Body Snatchers, 1956), to biologial missing links (The Creature from the Black Lagoon, 1954), to the bizarre side effects of nuclear contamination (The Incredible Shrinking Man, 1957), or to actual nuclear war (The World, the Flesh and The Devil, 1959). Strada describes a spectrum of discourses ranging from the extreme right, constituted of the governing elite and the politicians notion of the Pax Atomica, to the extreme left, occupied by the type of panic about the bomb which resulted in some of the more grizzly works of science fiction literature. The other specific positions he addresses are the sugar coated science fiction films (left of centre), the avoidance seeking general public (centre), and the atomic scientists with their varied acceptance of the H bomb as a necessary evil (right of centre). Regardless of one s position along the spectrum, the possibility of nuclear war constituted a daily reality in the life of the average American in the nineteen fifties. Government agencies issued specifications for the household bomb shelter, school children experienced weekly drills teaching them the most effective positions to brace themselves against the physical force of an atomic explosion, and true to form, the cinema presented society with various reflections of face of the nuclear potential or the nuclear threat. In most of the science fiction of the time, a primary concern related to the threat of the end of the world is the belief that humanity, in its bizarre mix of madness and complacency, has created and perfected the means of its own destruction. Raising the pH strips the H+ shared between the nitrogenous base electronegative centres from the hydrogen bond. The loss of hydrogen bonds between two complementary strands results in separation. The increase in pH will deprotonate the bases and will exist as negatively charged conjugate bases. As the deprotonated species, the hydrogen bonding between the bases G and C; and A and T are eliminated. The curves for all pH values displayed a similar shape. The higher the pH, the sooner the curve reached a plateau i.e. the maximum absorbance was reached. At pH 9.3, the lowest melting temperature of 82°C was seen. At pH 5.4, the highest melting temperature of 90.5°C was seen. This confirms the inverse relationship between Tm and pH conditions of the DNA strand. The absorption is decreased due to base stacking interactions. When DNA is denatured, these interactions are disrupted and an increase in absorbance is

Coraghessan Boyle, both are short stories that explore the concept of satire. Satire can be defined as a kind of writing that ridicules human weakness, vice, of folly in order to bring about social reform. It is a kind of writing to bring about change to society. Even though both are short stories, they easily get the faults of society across to its readers. In A Modest Proposal, Swift is offering an outrageous solution to the problems of human misery. He proposes that people should start eating babies, and using them for everything that they are worth on a daily basis. Swift creates a pamphlet and states six reasons as to why this is a brilliant idea. He states that money wouldn t be wasted on food, the number of Catholics would be reduced, it would be great inducement to marriages, there would be more food so the economy would increase, poor tenants would have money for their landlords, and it would be an improvement for the tavern business. Swift wants everyone to know how badly the Irish people are being treated by the English. He wants to change the reader s point of view through this sarcastic satirical pamphlet. The authors purpose of A Modest Proposal, is to try to change society. Swift is trying to reform the British official s involvement in Ireland. People are dying, and nothing is being done about it. The names of the characters in the story Great Expectations symbolize who they are and how they act. These are all seen in the book through the characters of Estella, Abel Magwitch, Miss Havisham, Pip, and Biddy. Estella, French for star, implies radiance and exquisiteness like a star, likewise, Dickens s character, Estella, in Great Expectations is inaccessible and cold like a star, too. Also, like a star, men love to gaze upon her, but cannot touch her because she has been trained by her adoptive mother, Miss Havisham, to have no feeling and no empathy for others. She has been taught to be cold and calculating and to break the heart of any man who makes the mistake of falling in love with her. Additionally, Estella symbolizes isolation and manipulation; she has been locked away for years in the impenetrable prison of Miss Havisham s making, far away from the carefree and caring life a young girl deserves. She teases and manipulates boys and later, men into loving her only become ice cold and break their hearts. Estella tells Pip, that I have no softness there, no sympathy sentiment nonsense. (Chapter 29) Estella manipulates Pip as a young boy and plays with his feelings as she leads him on to make him believe that he has a chance of loving her and being loved in return when she allows ... • 26. Greatest Conceivable Being Research Paper There are many ways to go about justifying a belief in the Greatest Conceivable Being. There are numerous disputes to argue a theistic position, but there are also many fallacies that people use in an unjustified way to prove the existence of God. Using strong evidence mainly from the cosmological argument, the theory that everything happens as a cause of something before it leading all the way back to a first existence, and the argument of design, stating that the complexity of nature could only be explained by a sentient designer, a Greatest Conceivable Being must exist. The cosmological argument discusses the idea that everything is an effect of a cause. Everything happens due to something else, and all of that had to have begun somewhere at sometime. If you go back all the way to the beginning of time and the commencement of the universe, something had to have happened to caused for this to occur. This is what is believed to be the work of a Greatest Conceivable Being. Everything in the world that exists, exists because something else caused it, including the world itself. Thomas Aquinas established his own version of this cosmological theory by saying, whatever is moved must be moved by another...but this cannot go on to infinity, because there would be no first mover ( The Five Ways ). • 27. Existentialism In Hamlet Hamlet is widely regarded as one of William Shakespeare s most famous and best written tragedies. Its importance to history, due in part to the fact that the introspection of the main character upon his dilemmas was rarely addressed in other popular plays, is felt to this day. Similar to the likes of Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, Julius Caesar, Othello, King Lear, and other Shakespearean tragedies, it has been the subject of much critical analysis and literary review from many approaches. In this essay, the historic, existentialist, traditional revenge tragedy, psychoanalytic, and archetypal approaches will be used to understand the tragedy of Hamlet. The time period in which the play was written is known as either the English Renaissance or the Early Modern Era. The existence of both names seems to prove that Hamlet was penned in a period of transition for England, and the characters within the tragedy all but confirm this conjecture. Hamlet, the titular character, represents the modern half of the transition, acquiring an education from a city where the transition was most prominent, while Claudius represents the medieval half, claiming and subsequently abusing the traditional position of king through means of betrayal and secrecy (Bernath 220). The time period also suggests that the introspection of the main character upon his dilemma s in such a way as to question his own existence initially had an incredible resonance with audiences, as such commentary on the human ... • 28. Depersonalization In Frrantz Fanon s Black Skin, White Man Frantz Fanon was one of the leading theorists of postcolonialism. His career as a psychiatrist gave him a unique perspective and allowed him to focus on the identity formation of the colonized subject and racial injustice. Fanon s insight and view of colonization helped to further explain course material. In Fanon s famous work Black Skin, White Mask, it became obvious how prevalent and severe racism was at that time (Julien). According to Fanon, it led to depersonalization which was so strong that colored people ultimately had to wear a white mask in order to survive. I believe that it s very sad that colored people weren t allowed to fully embrace who they were are and weren t able to live peacefully with the whites. Nobody should have to pretend to be someone whom they aren t. In Frantz Fanon s book titled The Wretched of the Earth, Frantz Fanon asserts that decolonization will always entail violent armed struggles between the colonized and the colonists. He makes several main points to substantiate such a bold and sweeping claim. Fanon states, At whatever level we study decolonization, it is quite simply the substitution of one species of mankind by another. The substitution is absolute, total, and seamless (Fanon 1). When colonization first begins in a certain region, fights soon break out between the natives and the colonists in hopes to preserve their land and freedom. When the natives lose, they then have to follow the colonist s rules and regulations ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 29. The Anunciation And Expulsion From Paradise Summary Giovani di Paolo s The Annunciation and Expulsion from Paradise is currently in the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC. According to the panel next to the artwork, the piece was finished in 1435 CE and made of tempera on panel. This Sienese altarpiece from the start of the Italian Renaissance shows the experimentation of form at that time. Giovanni di Paolo uses golden texture to display divinity, line to illustrate architectural perspective, and a strategic use of scale throughout the composition in order to portray the importance of the religious context. The golden foil that compliments tempera works at the time draws your eye to specific points in the piece. Drawing your eye to the upper left corner, the golden material then aids the eye in traveling down towards the bottom right corner. Because the largest golden form is in the upper right corner, your sight starts there. This is where god is represented and the symbol for divinity starts. Divinity implied by golden nimbuses or halos continue throughout the piece around the head of divine figures. The only two figures on the left without nimbuses represent Adam and Eve who are no longer divine one kicked out of paradise. This relates to the second part of the title, Expulsion from Paradise. For obvious cultural reasons, the angels have the heavenly halos. One angel is specifically known, Archangel Gabriel, because of the annunciation scene with Mary in the center. • 34. The Transformation Of Women In Jack Kerouac s On The Road Throughout Jack Kerouac s classic novel On the Road, the women are portrayed as weak, unintelligent, and manipulated targets to the dominant male figure. The women in the novel are clearly depicted for the male s pleasure. Life on the road for these characters was not only for the unbelievable adventures that were awaiting or for the opportunity to experiment with different drugs and alcohol, but mainly for the sexual objectification of meeting new women everywhere they traveled. By controlling these women, the men have the power to manipulate the women s body mentally and physically. Yet, this process fails and creates a destruction of the characters who are unable to find their inner self. Dean and Sal show the most important change of character towards the end of the novel by the decisions they made earlier on the road. These decisions effectively made them change character and underestimate the effect of manipulation. One of the first occurrences of female manipulation transpires when Dean comes home to Marylou after spending an abundance of time with Camille. Dean is known to leave his wife and pursue any women he wants, whenever he wants. This is one of the many examples of how Camille and Marylou are used only for sexual treatment. Marylou is the most familiar victim of Dean s fluctuations to see his wife but for once Dean had a change of heart and suddenly had an explosive yen to see his sweet first wife Marylou again (111). • 35. Vasculitis Essay By Jonas Wilson, Ing. Med. Vasculitis affecting large arteries A large vessel essentially refers to the aorta and its largest branches that are directed to the head and neck and the extremities. The hallmark in terms of pathology with large vessel vasculitides is that chronic inflammatory lesions are primarily found inside of the walls of vessels and not on the outside. This is a key distinction that can be used in order to separate large vessel from small vessel pathologies, which present with inflammation on the outside of the vessel wall in addition to being found within. The two main large artery vasculitides that will be discussed below are giant cell arteritis (GCA) and Takayasu disease. Giant cell arteritis Also known as temporal arteritis or Horton s arteritis, giant cell arteritis is a fairly common systemic vasculitide with a higher prevalence in women and peak incidence almost exclusively after the fifth decade of life. Le Guin The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas won the Hugo award for best short story in 1974. In this short story Le Guin writes about a town Omelas that is portrayed as too good to be true. Omelas sounds in my words like a city in a fairy tale, long ago and far away, once upon a time (Le Guin 254). In this town being happy comes at another s suffering. In our society we tend to live for our own happiness even if that means harming others in the process. We strive for success in this world, we want money and we want to be the best. Our happiness is important to us but we are willing to take from others in order to get to our happiness. Only pain is intellectual, only evil interesting (253). Though they differ from place to place, we recognize trends that seem almost prescribed to certain genders. Specifically, in the 1600s, men and women had explicit roles that were designated by people of stature. These expectations were followed loyally and people who failed to follow suit were shunned or sometimes even suffered seriously punishment including crude public beatings that were mot only pain inflicting but also status damaging (Rocke, Gender and Sexual Culture, 159). Looking deeper into the novel The Return of Martin Guerre, we identify from the start the expectations that are in place and how they play a role in the story. It was a city marked, like many large Western cities by the high probability of death at a young age. At this time period life in large cities was characterized by many deaths due to infectious disease. According to the death records collected from the year 1902 to 1904 by the city of Toronto, 8.1% of the total population died from gastroenteritis or typhoid. For the purposes of comparison, it is important to note that the mortality burden of all infectious diseases at this time period was extremely high, with these cases making up to 41.3% of the total population mortality. There were numerous social conditions that affected this reality, and in this particular case study, had the power to either increase or decrease the mortality burdens of infectious disease. These social factors will be further studied in the paper, and they include, but are not limited to: housing, socioeconomic status, diet, age, water quality, waste management, hygiene, rapid industrialization, increased population growth, immigration, scientific advancements, increased classification and record keeping, and the role of government. The common thread between all of these realms and typhoid, is the focus of this paper: public health.
