After 15 years of service on my job, my hours were
temporarily reduced. I’ve always been able to pay my
bills, but now without as much income, I really didn’t
know how I could make my next full mortgage payment.
I contacted my Credit Union and let them know about

modify my mortgage payments so that I could keep my
home. Thank you so much…

Board of Directors and
Supervisory Committee
Educational Systems Federal Credit Union
Greenbelt, Maryland

We have audited the accompanying statements of financial condition of the Educational Systems Federal Credit Union as of
December 31, 2009 and 2008 and the related statements of income, changes in members’ equity and cash flows for the
years then ended. These financial statements are the responsibility of the Credit Union’s management. Our responsibility is to
express an opinion on these financial statements based on our audits.

We conducted our audits in accordance with auditing standards generally accepted in the United States of America. Those
standards require that we plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial statements
are free of material misstatement. An audit includes examining, on a test basis, evidence supporting the amounts and
disclosures in the financial statements. An audit also includes assessing the accounting principles used and significant estimates
made by management, as well as evaluating the overall financial statement presentation. We believe that our audit provides a
reasonable basis for our opinion.

In our opinion, the financial statements referred to above present fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of the
Educational Systems Federal Credit Union for the years ended December 31, 2009 and 2008, and the results of its operations

Educational Systems FCU | 2009 Annual Report

With our income decreasing so drastically, it really made it difficult to pay all of our bills on time. When I contacted Educational Systems FCU to explain our situation, they helped our family get back on track with financial advice and options to help bring our bills current. We are so grateful…
  • 17. Independent Auditor’s Report Board of Directors and Supervisory Committee Educational Systems Federal Credit Union Greenbelt, Maryland We have audited the accompanying statements of financial condition of the Educational Systems Federal Credit Union as of December 31, 2009 and 2008 and the related statements of income, changes in members’ equity and cash flows for the years then ended. These financial statements are the responsibility of the Credit Union’s management. Our responsibility is to express an opinion on these financial statements based on our audits. We conducted our audits in accordance with auditing standards generally accepted in the United States of America. Those standards require that we plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial statements are free of material misstatement. An audit includes examining, on a test basis, evidence supporting the amounts and disclosures in the financial statements. An audit also includes assessing the accounting principles used and significant estimates made by management, as well as evaluating the overall financial statement presentation. We believe that our audit provides a reasonable basis for our opinion. In our opinion, the financial statements referred to above present fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of the Educational Systems Federal Credit Union for the years ended December 31, 2009 and 2008, and the results of its operations Educational Systems FCU | 2009 Annual Report and cash flows for the same periods, in conformity with accounting principles generally accepted in the United States of America. As discussed in Note 17 to the financial statements, the Credit Union, as an insured claimant, is a co-defendant in a declaratory judgment action filed by Cumis Insurance Society, Inc. in the United States District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin, and it has filed a counter declaratory judgment and breach of contract action in the United States District Court for the District of Maryland. Preliminary hearings and discovery proceedings on both actions are in progress. The ultimate outcome of the matter cannot presently be determined. If unfavorable, the outcome of the matter would concretize a loss of up to nearly $5 million apart from legal fees, which is not reflected in the accompanying financial statements.
