This document provides information about the WordMasters vocabulary competition for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students at Cibolo Green Elementary. It explains that students will learn about analogies, be given vocabulary words to study, and participate in a meet in December where they will complete a page of analogies using their vocabulary words. The goal is for students to practice analogies and vocabulary to prepare for the competition.

WordMasters is a vocabulary competition for 3rd

3. What Will Students Do?
Another great question!
First, students will learn what an
analogy is. An analogy is made
up of words, grouped together
because of their relationships.

4. You have probably seen or
heard analogies before.
ANALOGY EXAMPLE
Up is to down as front is to _________.
The first two words of an analogy are always
related in some way. How is UP related to
DOWN?

5. Therefore I’m looking for the
opposite of “front”…
Up is to down as front is to _________.back

6. Analogies show relationships
between words, but they are not
always opposites. You have to
figure out how the first two words
are related. Then, you try to make a
pair that is related in the same way.
TRY THIS ONE:
SHOE is to FOOT as GLOVE is to ________

7. SHOE is to FOOT
as GLOVE is to ________HAND

8. I’m sure you knew that one!
SHOE is related to FOOT because a
shoe goes on a foot. In the same
way, a GLOVE goes on a HAND!
There are many other types of
analogies. You will work on other
types when you practice.

9. Once I understand analogies,
then what?
The second thing you will do is
learn some new vocabulary
words. These are your
WORDMASTER challenge words!

10. Each grade level will have
WORDMASTER words. You will
practice using online flashcards,
both at school and at home.
The more you practice, the better
you will do in the challenge!

11. WORDMASTERS MEET #1
The first meet will be
held in December.
You will complete a page of
analogies, and the analogies will
use words from your word list.
