What is NEHS?
The National Elementary Honor Society was
established in 2008 with two main purposes:

to recognize students who have achieved
   academic excellence and demonstrated
   responsibility, and

to engage those students in meaningful
   service and leadership activities.
Selection Process
Students in 4th and 5th grades who, at the end of the
fall semester, have A averages in all subjects, and
who have achieved a cumulative all-A average in the
previous semester, are eligible for membership.
Those students are invited to complete an application
for NEHS. Applications must be turned in by the
 due date.
Teachers and staff members who have worked
closely with the student are asked to complete
evaluation forms, providing information about each
student’s demonstration of responsibility at school.
A Faculty Council, appointed by the principal, reviews
the student applications and teacher evaluations.
Members of the council cast votes to make the final
selection. The advisors provide information to the
council, but are not involved in the selection of
 members.
Student Evaluation
The Faculty Council will review feedback given by
teachers regarding the responsibility demonstrated
by each student, as indicated on a rating scale. The
responsible student is one who demonstrates many
positive qualities such as the following:

     is honest and reliable
 is cooperative, respectful and courteous
     works well with others
 is a positive role model in the school
Expectations of Members
NEHS members will be expected to maintain the
        academic excellence and responsible
behavior that led to their selection.

NEHS members will attend meetings held once a
 month.

NEHS members will be expected to participate in
 service projects and activities.
Clarifications
Membership in NEHS is for the duration of 4th and/or
5th grades only. At the middle school level, students
must meet the criteria for eligibility set forth by the
NJHS of the middle school, and complete
requirements that are part of the middle school’s
 selection process.

A major goal of NEHS is to move students beyond
recognition into service and leadership in their schools
 and communities.
If you have any questions about NEHS, please contact
 one of the faculty advisors.
