Wooden Flooring and it’s types
Wooden Flooring is any product manufactured from timber that is designed to use as
Flooring. Wood is a common choice as a flooring material due to its environmental profile
durability and restorability and can come in various styles and colors.
Types of Wood Flooring
1. Solid Hard Wood Flooring
2. Engineered Wood Flooring
3. Laminated Wood Flooring
1.) Solid Hardwood Flooring
This solid timber flooring is made of real wood from top to bottom- wood that has been
harvested from a variety of trees like oak, walnut and pine.
Durability: It is extremely durable and will last for years, if well maintained. It can be
refinished several times over its lifetime.
Price: Rs. 650 – Rs 5000 per sq foot.
Ease of installation: Labour-intensive as solid hardwoods are nailed or stapled down.
Suitability: Solid hardwood is value for money. It is suitable for those who have long-time
use in mind.
Hickory, Oak, Pine and Maple are mostly used in solid hardwood flooring.
Brown Teak Solid Hardwood
Price: Rs 400 per sq. ft.
Thickness: 18mm
Oak Solid Hardwood
Price: Rs 350 per sq. ft.
Thickness: 15mm
Advantages Disadvantages
• Long term investment • Much costly
• Variety • Prone to termite attack
• Ageless Quality • Avoid water contact
• Healthy Air Quality • Scratching
• Good Acoustics • Limited Usage
• Increase value of your home • High Maintenance
• Good Hygiene • Molds

2.) Engineered Wood Flooring
It is a veneer of real wood glued to several layer of other wood, like plywood. This gives this
wood excellent stability over time.
Durability: It is quite durable, which is why it is a good choice for any area of your home. It also
holds up better to moisture than hardwood does.
Price: Rs 200 – Rs 900 per sq foot
Ease of installation: It includes a wider range of installation methods like staple or nail, click and
fit, or glue.
Suitability: Engineered wood doesn’t have the longevity that solid wood flooring has. Thus, it is
for those who want the look of wood but who are practical about wanting it for a certain period.
Brown Oak Engineered Wood
Price: Rs 250 per sq. ft.
Thickness: 14mm
Oak Deep Brown Engineered Wood
Price: Rs 450 per sq. ft.
Thickness: 14mm
Maple Engineered Wood
Price: Rs 290 per sq. ft.
Thickness: 15mm
Advantages Disadvantages
• Less expensive than solid wood. • Can be scratched easily.
• Easy and quick installation. • Veneer layer can reduce your floor
lifespan.
• Extremely Durable. • Can fade in sun.
• Can be refinished and sanded. • High maintenance.
• Looks like real wood. • Not waterproof.
• More resistance to fluctuations in
temperature.
• Less moisture Resistance.

3.) Laminate Wood Flooring
Laminate wooden floor tiles are composed of a synthetic material that stimulates the
appearance of wood, which is then laminated.
Durability: While it’s durable, the biggest advantage of laminate wood flooring is that it is very
simple to install.
Price: Rs 120 – Rs 1200 per sq foot
Ease of installation: Very simple to install.
Suitability: Laminate wooden flooring is ideal for those who want the finish of solid wood but
are on a limited budget.
Fiberboard Laminate Flooring
Price: Rs 102 per sq. ft.
Thickness: 8 mm
PVC Laminate Flooring
Price: Rs 20 per sq. ft.
Thickness: 2 mm
Advantages Disadvantages
• Low Price. • Prone to water damage.
• Easy Installation . • Warping can occur.
• Simple Cleaning. • Noisy if installed improperly.
• Budget Friendly. • Quite Slippery.
• 100% Recyclable. • It isn’t natural.
• Low Maintenance. • Dangerous Chemical Compounds.

Method of installation of
Wooden Flooring:
1.) Glue less/ Floating
With various engineered floors, you are
required to apply adhesive on the surfaces
where they conjoin. Glue-less engineered
floors, however, have tongue and lock edges
that interlock therefore conjoining to form
a tight bond.
Due to their straightforward method of
installation, glue-less engineered floors can be
taken up as DIY projects without incurring
labor costs.
https://www.homestratosphere.com/types-of-engineered-wood-flooring/
2.) Glued
Unlike glue-less hardwood flooring, glued
engineered requires adhesive to be applied
on joints to maximize the grip. Owing to the
extra cost of adhesive and time needed to
attach the boards, you will spend more money
installing glues boards over their glue-less
counterparts. Urethane Adhesive is widely
used now-a-days as an adhesive.
https://www.homestratosphere.com/types-of-engineered-wood-flooring/
3.) Nail Down
Nailing down hardwood floors is the most
common installation method, especially for
solid flooring. The process involves nailing the
flooring directly to a wood subfloor. With
this method, the nails are nearly invisible after
installation.
https://www.homestratosphere.com/types-of-engineered-wood-flooring/
Process of Installation:
1. With the floor prepared, spread flooring adhesive with a trowel. Glue will typically set in about 60
minutes.
2. Hold your trowel at a 45-degree angle to spread the glue in small sections.
3. Next, lay the first row.
4. Install row one on the starting line.
5. Cut the last board of the row to fit using a table saw, leaving a 12-15mm expansion gap.
6. When adding the second row, fit the groove onto the first row’s tongue and gently tap it into place
using your rubber mallet.
7. Use spacers to help maintain the expansion gap.
8. Tap any rows in place with your rubber mallet to make sure the rows of flooring are flush against
one another.
9. For engineered hardwood flooring, match the ends and push into place.
10. You will probably have to cut the width of the boards in the last row to fit. Measure the space and
subtract 3/4-inch for the expansion gap.
11. Cut the boards to width on a table saw. Put the boards in place.
12. Install the shoe moulding to cover the expansion gap.
Points to remember:
1. Expansion gap should equal the thickness of the boards used.
2. Acclimatize the wood properly before using.
3. Get an experienced labour.
Properties of Wood Flooring:
1. Easy to clean.
2. High quality look.
3. Strength and Durability.
4. Long term investment.
5. Variety.
6. Good Acoustics.
7. Healthy indoor air quality.
8. Warmth.

Installation process of Nail down Wooden Flooring:
1.) Locate Joists. 2.) Cut casing

3.) Secure Underlayment 4.) Create chalk guide
https://www.bhg.com/home-improvement/flooring/installation-how-to/how-to-install-hardwood-floors/
5.) Rack Planks 6.) Drill pilot holes
https://www.bhg.com/home-improvement/flooring/installation-how-to/how-to-install-hardwood-floors/
7.) Lay first boards 8.) Install next row
https://www.bhg.com/home-improvement/flooring/installation-how-to/how-to-install-hardwood-floors/
9.) Work across room 10.) Cut for corners
https://www.bhg.com/home-improvement/flooring/installation-how-to/how-to-install-hardwood-floors/
11.) Lay the Final Row 12.) Mind the gap
