Access or FDMA is a channel
access method used in
multiple-access protocols as a
channelization protocol.
•FDMA gives users an
individual allocation of one or
several frequency bands,
or channels. Multiple Access
systems coordinate access
between multiple users.
Drawbacks of 1G
 Poor voice quality
 Poor battery life
 Phone size is big
 No security

2nd Generation Technology(2G)
 It uses GSM
 GSM provides voice & limited data
services and uses digital modulation for
improved audio quality
 Demand for Fax & short messages was
growing rapidly

2G technology uses two standards
1. TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access)
2. CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access)

Drawbacks of 2G
 Need to improve transmission quality
 Unable to support complex data such as video
 Cell towers has a limited coverage area

3rd Generation Technology (3G)
 3G networks provide the ability to transfer
voice data & non-voice data (music, emails
& instant messaging) over the same
network simultaneously.
 3G networks deliver broadband capacity &
support greater number of voice & data
customers of lower incremental cost than
2G.
 It uses W-CDMA & UTMS 12
