Into Thin Air by Jon Krauker Essay
The book Into Thin Air, written by Jon Krakauer, explores the struggle of man versus man and man
versus nature. The very different personalities proved costly to everyone involved on the expedition.
The team of climbers that were hiking toward the summit of Mt. Everest on May 10, 1996, was
oblivious to what lay ahead of them. No matter how advanced the hikers were, Everest on this day
would test the will and endurance of everyone attempting to reach the summit. The one element that
no one person could elude was pain.
Jon Krakauer stated in his book, I quickly came to understand that climbing Everest was primarily
about enduring pain (136). At this point in the book, Jon was unaware of the events that would soon
transpire. Even the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The pain for everyone grew increasingly greater each day that they were on the mountain. Everyone
on the expedition had to dig deep into themselves to find the will to keep moving and to put their pain
and fears aside. The pain that each of these men and women on this mountain were beginning to feel
was pain that would linger well after they got off the mountain.
Mt. Everest s summit has always seemed an unattainable goal for most people. The idea that most
people have is that if I can climb Mt Everest, I can accomplish anything. To have the money and
desire to try to attempt it is one thing, but being able to endure the punishment is quite another. Beck
Weathers, one of the climbers on this particular expedition, had such severe frostbite that he had to
have his right arm, nose and the fingers on his left hand amputated. Everyone on the expedition
suffered the rigors of Everest. The two expert guides, Rob Hall and Scott Fischer, lost their lives due
to a violent storm that ripped through during their descent from the summit. Their impaired judgment
also contributed to their demise. Everest is no respecter of persons. Mt Everest is the most respected
mountain in the whole world and if

Research Paper On Teen Panic Disorder
Teen Panic Disorder
Teen Panic Disorder happens when people suffer from sudden, uncontrollable panic attacks. These
panic attacks are not occurring for any natural fear or in any danger. In fact, it happens for
unnecessary, overpowering fear. When a teen gets many panic attacks he or she may start worrying
about having another panic attack. This needless worry causes him or her more anxiety. Teen with
Panic Disorder often experiences anxiety and avoids visiting places where a panic attack may happen.
This mental disorder is called Agoraphobia. In the USA, six million people are suffering from panic
attacks. Teens are suffering more than others.
Hyperarousal or the severe traumatic response is common when a person faces danger. The body s
expected reaction is fast and it initiates in a fraction of seconds. The sense stimulates various brain
areas that are aimed to protect you by signalling you to escape or to fight with it. At this point of time,
the brain starts releasing adrenaline and other hormones throughout the body for countering the threat.
This defensive machinery is called hyperarousal or the fight or flight response and this mechanism
helps us to survive. However, the emotional and physical responses during the hyperarousal are ...

Stereotypes In The Hunger Of Memory By Richard Rodriguez
Society will continue to judge humanity based on race, culture, and intelligence. Stereotypes affect
how citizens determine their future. Demonstrated in the excerpt The Hunger of Memory, Richard
Rodriguez faces stereotypes when he travels to the United States to achieve a higher education.
Likewise, in the essay Superman and Me, Sherman Alexie is assumed to be less intelligent based of
his ethnic background. Both of these authors futures are influenced differently based off the prejudice
situations they face. Whereas Rodriguez perceives differences as continuing in a stereotypical
humanity, Alexie perceives differences as expanding beyond stereotypical standards. Within the
excerpt The Hunger of Memory , Richard Rodriguez delivers his inspirational story about how he
came from nothing and made his life into something worthwhile. Richard Rodriguez grew up as a
tremendous disadvantage kid. Richard Rodriguez states, I was a socially disadvantage disadvantaged
kid (124). Since Rodriguez s family was poor, he would often be the poorest student amongst his
peers. Richard Rodriguez states, ... been a classmate to children of rich parents... (125). Sitting next to
his rich peers, did nothing, but motive Rodriguez into believing he could be rich himself. To better
himself and be presented a great opportunity in life, Rodriguez packed up his things and moved to
America at the age of thirty. Moving away isolated himself from not only his family, but his own

Satire is Used in the Portraits, Gin Lane, by William...
What is satire? According to oxforddictionaries.com, satire is The use of humor, irony, exaggeration,
or ridicule to expose and criticize people s stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of
contemporary politics and other topical issues. This literary device is portrayed heavily in both the
illustrations Gin Lane by William Hogarth and in Untitled by Paul Kuczynski. Gin Lane is basically
an illustration by William Hogarth that depicts life in the gin shops and shows the negative effects the
drink had on the people of London. It shines a light on the horrible circumstances London was under
when gin was introduced to its people. Unititled is an illustration by Paul Kuczynski that represents

In the top story of one the buildings fortunate to still be standing, is a man who has hung himself from
the rafters. Willaim Hogarth used all these startling scenes to grab the attention of the viewer and give
them an insight on London at its lowest. Through Gin Lane, Hogarth expressed the ravenous effects
gin had on the people of London and how it affected the living environment as well. Untitled by Paul
Kuczynski also contains satire, however the author of this portrait uses satire to depict the theme of
isolation, instead of misery, poverty, ruin and neglect. This simple, yet thought provoking picture,
shows a man looking through a periscope that is shaped like the Facebook symbol, to see through a
window above an open door. The door is not barricaded in any way, shape or form, so the man is able
to walk outside and see what is going on in the world first hand. Instead, he chooses to stay inside by
himself and view the world through Facebook. Through Untitled, Kuczynski conveys the message that
social media interaction is overtaking physical interaction. People are more likely to go on social
media to find out what is happening than to go out and experience it themselves. Kuczynski s painting
greatly showcases that even in its simplicity. Despite the fact that both pieces of art contain various
differences, they contain similarities as well. Some of the differences include the message portrayed,
themes and the style of drawing. In Hogarth s

How Does Amon Goeth Change In The Movie
Amon Goeth is portrayed as a cruel Nazi officer who was responsible for the death of many Jews in
the Krakow Ghetto. Unlike Oskar Schindler, Goeth s character did not change from the beginning of
the film to the end of the film. However, in the middle of the film there was a small development in
Goeth s personality from being a ruthless officer to a forgiving officer, which failed to permanently be
engrained into Goeth s character. In the film, Schindler stated that war brings out the worst in people,
and that Goeth would have been a different man if he was not in those circumstances. However, I do
not agree that this is true for Goeth because of a very intriguing scene in the film. At the end of the
movie, before Goeth was hanged for his war

Research Paper On Digestion
Digestion: From beginning to end
Digestion, how you get your energy and nutrients, seems simple. However, it is actually a complex
process involving three organ systems and many stages.
When food is put in the mouth, the teeth grind it up into a paste and the amylase in the saliva begins to
break down the carbohydrates. Swallowing takes the food into the oesophagus and by peristalsis
moves it into the stomach. In the stomach, strong hydrochloric acid breaks down complex proteins
over a period of a few hours. The resulting mixture then moves into the small intestine, the start of
which is called the duodenum. Here, bile from the liver and enzymes from the pancreas mix into the
food. As the mixture moves down the small intestine, the enzymes ... Show more content on

However, respiration requires two ingredients glucose and oxygen. The glucose is obtained from
carbohydrates, but the oxygen must be taken from the air. The diaphragm contracts, expanding the
lung cavity and sucking in air through the mouth and nose. It passes through the trachea, splits into
two when it meets the bronchi and splits many more times through the bronchioles and into the
alveoli.
The blood passes through the vena cava and into the right side of the heart, where the valves
accelerate it towards the lungs through the pulmonary artery. It travels into capillaries and passes by
the alveoli, where gas exchange occurs. Oxygen in the alveoli is taken by the red blood cells and
carbon dioxide from the plasma is passed into the alveoli. The newly oxygenated blood travels
through the pulmonary vein and back into the theart, this time the left side of it. The blood gets
pumped through the aorta and other arteries before it gets to the cells it needs to go

get the overhead cost. Sum the overhead and direct cost to get the total cost; this will be the total cost
of producing a batch of beer label. Therefore, we need to divide them up by the bottle per batch in
order to know the cost per each bottle for each label.
As shown in Exhibit 2, I have determined the allocation rate of each cost driver, and that will allow
me to assign them to different cost pool; base on the activities. Adding up all the number I assigned,

The Pros And Cons Of The Seebeck Effect
Energy loss is a problem encountered in every industrial process and everyday technology take power
stations for example. Electricity is generated by heat engines by which gas or steam powered turbines
convert the heat to mechanical energy then into electricity, however 70% of this energy is lost as heat
energy. Similarly in all electronics devices energy is lost through heat.
So we know that electricity creates heat mainly because or electrical devices warm up during its use.
But imagine how useful it would be to generate electricity from this heat created, in other words using
this lost energy which is in the form of heat to generate electricity so eventually you d be using every
bit of energy to generate electric power. This objective can be reached by applying the Seebeck Effect.
The seebeck effect is a phenomenon by which a temperature difference between two conductors or
semiconductors of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It all started in 1981 when a German physicist called Thomas Johann Seebeck accidently found that a
compass magnet would deflect when a circuit with two different metals with different temperature
junction. He concluded that that there is an induced electric current in the circuit that deflected the
magnet according to ampere s law. So the voltage that was due to the difference in temperature drives
the current in a closed circuit.
In order To measure this voltage, a second conductor material which generates a different voltage
under the same temperature gradient must be used. Otherwise, if the same material is used for
measurement, the voltage generated by the measuring conductor would simply cancel that of the first
conductor. The voltage difference generated by the two materials can then be measured and related to
the corresponding temperature gradient. It is thus clear that, based on Seebeck s principle;
thermocouples can only measure temperature differences and need a known reference temperature to
yield the absolute

Pesticide Essay
Worldwide it is estimated that approximately 1.8 billion people engage in agriculture and most use
pesticides to protect the food and commercial products that they produce. Others use pesticides
occupationally for public health programs, and in commercial applications, while many others use
pesticides for lawn and garden applications and in and around the home (1,2). Pesticides are defined
as chemical substances used to prevent, destroy, repel or mitigate any pest ranging from insects (i.e.,
insecticides), rodents (i.e., rodenticides) and weeds (herbicides) to microorganisms (i.e., algicides,
fungicides or bactericides) (1,3).
Over 1 billion pounds of pesticides are used in the United State (US) each year and approximately 5.6
billion pounds are used worldwide (1). In many developing countries programs to control exposures
are limited or non existent. As a consequence; it has been estimated that as many as 25 million
agricultural workers worldwide experience unintentional pesticide poisonings each year (4). In a large
prospective study of pesticide users in the United States, the Agricultural Health Study, it was
estimated that 16% of the cohort had at least one pesticide poisoning or an unusually high pesticide
exposure episode in their lifetime (5).
Although attempts to reduce pesticide use through organic agricultural practices and the use of other
technologies to control pests continue, exposure to pesticides occupationally, through home and
garden use, through

Foreshadowing In The Tell Tale Heart
The Tell Tale Heart is a famous horror fiction by Edgar Allan Poe. Poe is regarded as an important
writer of suspense and terror tales. His stories are often composed of dark and terrifying atmosphere,
and The Tell Tale Heart is also expressing terror with the story of an insane man killing the old man
pitilessly. The narrator plans to kill the old man because of his vulture eye. He cruelly kills the old
man and buries him under the floor. In the story, the intense feeling is created through setting, skill of
foreshadowing and irony. First of all, the dark setting of the old man s room manifests terror in the
story. His room was as black as pitch with the thick darkness (for the windows were close fastened,
through fear of robbers), and so I knew that he could not see the opening of the door, .... (56 59). The
author directly portrays the dark scene of the old man s room as black pitch, and the word thick
emphasizes the deepness of the dark. The fact that the old man could see nothing because there s no
light makes the readers feel anxious. People depend on the light for their own protection, and they

I heard all things in the heaven and in the earth. I heard many things in hell. (5 6). It is a delusion that
one can hear all things in the heaven and hell, but the narrator insists that he can hear those things.
This proves that the narrator is insane and makes readers get curious about the reason for the narrator s
insistence. If we think simply, heaven and hell are the main elements that are indicating death, so it is
logical to predict death in the story. Death is a main subject of horror and it creates a heavy
atmosphere in the story. Heavy atmosphere and the growing tension of death causes the emotion of
fear. In addition to foreshadowing, this story contains one more powerful constituent for the

The Reality of Married Life
THE REALITY OF MARRIED LIFE
John J. Robinson in his book Of Suchness gives the following advice on love, sex and married life. Be
careful and discreet; it is much easier to get married than unmarried. If you have the right mate, it s
heavenly; but if not, you live in a twenty four hour daily hell that clings constantly to you, it can be
one of the bitterest things in life. Life is indeed strange. Somehow, when you find the right one, you
know it in your heart. It is not just an infatuation of the moment. But the powerful urges of sex drive a
young person headlong into blind acts and one cannot trust his feelings too much. This is especially
true if one drinks and get befuddled; the lousiest slut in a dark bar can look like a Venus ... Show more

Then, much to the disappointment of both parties, the proverbial veil that had so far been concealing
the innermost feelings of each partner is removed to expose the true nature of both partners. It is then
that disillusion sets in.
Material Needs
Love by itself does not subsist on fresh air and sunshine alone. The present world is a materialistic
world and in order to meet your material needs, proper financing and budgeting is essential. Without
it, no family can live comfortably. Such a situation aptly bears out the saying that when poverty
knocks at the door, love flies through the window . This does not mean that one must be rich to make a
marriage work. However, if one has the bare necessities of life provided through a secure job and
careful planning, many unnecessary anxieties can be removed from a marriage.
The discomfort of poverty can be averted if there is complete understanding between the couple. Both
partners must understand the value of contentment. Both must treat all problems as our problems and
share all the ups and downs in the true spirit of a long standing life partnership.
A feeling of security and contentment comes from mutual understanding which is the SECRET of a

Analysis Of The Harvest Gypsies By Steinbeck
The bare land of California faced severe drought under the scorching sun, precious crops are harvest
ready, scarcely diminishing without any growers around. However, a group of benevolent nomads
approaches this dying land in hopes of living among it and healing it. Migrants from all around the
world travel across countries, borders, and vast terrain. California, being a famous location today in
the United States, is also set to be the heaviest drought environment with very large farmlands. This
land would have deteriorated, but it was healed in the most mundane way, agricultural farming.
Steinbeck introduces the mere impact that these migrants they ve had in the country, but in most cases,
it s not seen like that. In The Harvest Gypsies , Steinbeck writes a deliberate passage to assure that
these migrants are not of the country s problem. He denounces prejudice views among them, includes
the issues they face with the law, incorporates their unprecedented arrival, and alludes California s
importance in migrant labor for agricultural economics. Near the beginning of the passage, Steinbeck
s technique is to use specific word choices to imply that most residential views on migrants/gypsies
are prejudice. They are often a part of: This hatred of the stranger that occurs in the whole range of
human history (2). Steinbeck uses hatred of the stranger to tap into a sort of knowledge of history.
Aside from his, he shares a view in which they are often seen as ignorant and

Carlo Scarpa s Approach And Theory
INTRODUCTION AND BUILDING HISTORY
Carlo Scarpa s approach and theory to designing with existing buildings is an innovation that is
relevant to buildings even today. The Castelvecchio museum is one of his greatest projects, and
thoroughly reveals his way of working. Scarpas intention was not only to restore an aging building but
to do so in a way that creates dialogue between the new and the old. By careful work of demolition
and preservation, he literally cuts, shifts and adds elements to the existing building in order to create
an exhibition of the building s past, and its connection to modernity.
In order for him to make informed decisions about what to preserve and what to demolish, he had to
have a thorough understanding of the building s political history. The Castelvecchio dates back as far
as the 12th century, and has undergone four eras of development in its lifetime. The commune wall is
the oldest element in the building and was the second of three large fortifications in Verona (Fig 1.1).
In 1354, the Castelvecchio was built by the Scaligeri family, the Lords of Verona, and was built for
their own defense against the citizens for times of revolt. It was built either side of the commune wall,
and consisted of a three story residence or Reggia around an inner court and an outer military zone
(Fig 1.2). The Castelvecchio continued this military function until 1797, where Napoleon and his
troops claimed residence during his invasion over the Venetian Republic. This

Georges Seurat s Young Woman Powdering Herself
At the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston I choose Georges Seurat s painting, Young Woman Powdering
Herself . Seurat s painting portrays Seurat s mistress who Georges kept a secrete relationship with for
about 3 years. Georges Seurat carries out Young Woman Powdering Herself during the 19th century.
Majority of Georges Seurat s work is considered to have a French/ Impressionist style. The medium
and technique used for Young Woman Powdering Herself is an oil on canvas. By using oil paints on
his work, Seurat is able to make the colors as well as the vivid colors on his work standout, which
ultimately reinforces the subject.

The two elements Seurat s uses in his work are light and pointillism. The use of theses two elements
help brings femininity and beauty to his painting. Georges is known for bringing out light in how it
appears in nature in his work. Through the of the medium of pointillism, Seurat is able to create a
bigger picture in his work. Seurat use of the element light helps show hoe light bounce around. For
instance, the way the light travels through the open window and bounces off of the young woman s
skin shows the light that is being presented. Through this, Seurat reveals the light in places where the
light hits first.
Through Georges Seurat s use of numerous shades of color such as tint, value, warms colors, and cool
colors he is able to create a certain mood/feeling. His use of tint in multiple areas helps bring depth to
the painting. The use of value of the colors is used to portray the lightness and darkness in the

create a mood of warmth toward her. Lastly, the use of cool colors in the background aid in allowing

Discuss the relative importance of physical and human factors in accounting for changes to vegetation
over time within ecosystems in the British Isles (40 marks)
The British Isles can be found in the Northern Hemisphere where deciduous forest is the main biome.
Here physical and human factors have accounted for changes to the vegetation for many years. Human
factors can include tourism, agriculture, urbanisation, interception and deforestation. Physical factors
can be such things as natural disasters, succession and diseases.
The human factor of interception can vary between many situations. For example, humans can
intercept and alter the vegetation through predator control. By reducing the predators which feed upon

A physical factor which can alter the vegetation of an ecosystem within the British Isles can be natural
disasters. There are a range of natural disasters that take place all over the world but the ones most
common in the British Isles are forest fires, floods and earthquakes. Irrespective that the value on the
Richter scale is usually quite low a lot of vegetation can still be disrupted. Small plants can be
uprooted and even fallen debris from damaged properties can fall upon an ecosystem and damage the
already existing plants resulting in another physical factor secondary succession leading to other
species colonising the land and becoming the dominant species.
In addition, forest fires and floods act in a similar way. For example, in 2004 in Boscastle there was
severe flooding which resulted from a large amount of precipitation that the water basin just couldn t
hold. This led to increased surface runoff and high saturation of the soil, decreasing it stability. With

Essay about Flannery O Connor
Flannery O Connor
Mary Flannery O Connor was born in Savannah, Georgia, on March 25, 1925. Until she graduated in
1945 she was known as Mary Flannery. At this point she felt that Mary Flannery didnt seem suitable,
on one occasion she described it as sounding like the name of an Irish washerwoman. From this point
on, she was known as just Flannery OConnor. Flannery is most recognized for her short stories but at
the same time had great interest in cartooning and drawing. She would paint over any cracks in the
walls of her home so that her mother would not cover them up with paintings from relatives. As a
student at Georgia State College for women Flannery displayed her interests in art by painting murals

While living at this residence Flannery became sick with a incurable disease known as Lupus. After
coming to terms with her illness OConnor returned home to Geogia where she concentrated most of
her efforts on writing and less on cartooning. Wise Blood, her first novel, was finished in 1952, this
was an extraordinary achievement for her. Considering her belief that she would pass away in the
preceding 3 years, OConnor devoted most of her time to writing her short stories. After surprisingly
living to see the end of the third year Flannery had completed nine short stories.
Most of what is known about Flannery after she moved back to Georgia is relayed through her
correspondence with friends and people who admired her work. One person in particular who became
very close with Flannery was a fan who had developed a friendship and companionship over an eight
year period through the exchange of 250 letters. In 1979, Flannerys close friend Sally Fitzgerald
published The Habit of Being. She used the letters that had been shared between the two friends to
help document Flannerys life. The anonymous friend OConnor had exchanged the letters with
throughout the years was not revealed until 1998 when she took her own life. It was at this point that
the public had learned the true identity of Betty Hester, the mystery correspondent.
Flannery exceeded her expectation of only living three years. While continuing to write throughout
her illness, she completed two

Alcohol And The Liver Research Paper
Alcohol can have negative effects on liver function. When alcohol is consumed the body starts trying
to metabolize it but has no way of doing so. The liver then has to work detoxify and remove the
alcohol from the bloodstream. Once the liver finishes the oxidation process, the alcohol becomes
water and carbon dioxide. If the alcohol accumulates in the body, it may destroy cells and organs. The
oxidative metabolism prevents this from happening. When too much alcohol is ingested at once, the
toxins take a toll on the body, starting with the liver. The oxidative metabolism of the alcohol creates
molecules that lead to a condition called fatty liver. Research supports that fatty liver, the early stage
of alcoholic liver disease, develops in nearly

Question One: Outline the methods of expansion used by the company. Qantas which was founded in
1920 was first only a domestic airline. Eventually the company began travelling internationally and
started expanding itself into the global market. Qantas today has become Australia s national airline
and one of the world s leading long distance airlines. To become one of the worlds s leading airlines;

An example in the case of Qantas is their constant struggle of market share between their domestic
competitors, Virgin Blue. This also has an inverse relationship with the domestic market, where if
there are sudden fluctuations in the international market, the domestic market may make up for the
potential loss. In order to gain this cushioning of the economic cycle, Qantas also had to effectively
spread production costs and promote operation efficiency for their growing international corporation.
Economies of scale are the reduction in costs of productions caused by increasing the scale of the
production facility and spreading fixed costs over a larger output. This means that as Qantas expands
to global markets, they can possibly gain more revenue through services and this would generate
lower average costs and the potential for higher profits. The purchase of Australian Airlines in
September 1992 allowed Qantas to more efficiently use their aircraft and improve management of
passenger capacity and transfers between domestic and international services. Through their
increasing economies of sale, they were able to gain a cushion for the economic

Essay about 1776 Book Review
1776, Book Review It was a good year for a revolution, 1776. But it didn t start off quite as well as the
colonists would have liked. When George Washington agreed to take command of the American
forces in 1775, he probably didn t realize what he was truly getting himself into. Washington took
command of an army made up of old men and young boys that had either come from their farms or the
street. The army was short on weapons and gunpowder, lacked uniforms, and was racked by disease
and drunkenness. Washington understood that what lies ahead would be difficult, considering he
would be facing the most powerful country in world. But he probably didn t expect his worst problems
to come from his own army, which was an undisciplined and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The battle was won, despite insufficient arms and ammunition. It would be one of the few military
victories Washington would experience that year. The news got back to England, and King George III
was angered when he heard the outcome of Boston. He spoke before Parliament and ordered that the
rebels were to be stopped. The British, devastated by the defeat, returned later in the year, this time
with more reinforcements and the help of the Hessians. New York City was now the new battleground.
The battles and conflicts that lie ahead once again reminded Washington of what kind of army he had.
The Battle of New York would soon prove to be a disaster. It was Washington s first command on a
large scale battle. He and his general officers had not only failed, but they looked like fools from the
British point of view. After the battle, troops began to run away in fear. Even Washington s closest
friend, Joseph Reed, began plotting behind his back. Washington suffered another bitter defeat at Fort
Washington, N.Y. The colonists were intimidated, and surrendered Fort Washington. It was a severe
blow to the colonists, 2000 were taken prisoner, 59 killed, 146 cannons lost to the British and Hessians
in a matter of hours. It was a humiliating blow. During one particularly disastrous skirmish with the
British, Washington saw his own troops fleeing from the enemy, and they were refusing to obey
orders. Washington threw his hat on the ground in disgust. And

Gesture To Understand The Relationship Between Language...
Why people use gesture when they speak? People use gestures when they talk, but is this behavior
learned from watching others move their hands when talking. When speaker talk, they gesture. The
goal of this article is to understand the contribution that these gestures make to how we communicate
and think. Gesture can play a role in communication and thought at many timespans. I explore, in turn,
gesture s contribution to how language is produced and understood in the moment; its contribution to
how we learn language and other cognitive skills. I find that the gestures speakers produce when they
talk are integral to communication and can be harnessed in a number of ways. Gesture provides
building blocks that can be used to construct a language. By watching how children and adults who do

This article will use the terms body language and nonverbal communication, gestures. I have my own
opinion that everyone talks with their hands at least sometimes. Some people s hand talking or

How Water Shaped Michigan
How Water Shaped Michigan
For many years, I have always wondered how Michigan was shaped. I did not realize that water could
have such a huge impact on the way Michigan was made. From doing research, I recognized that there
has been four Ice Ages on Earth. The last Ice Age, Pleistocene Epoch began and ended two million
years to 12,000 years. At this time, hot and cold temperatures swayed and glaciers receded to advance
into the interglacial periods. In the United States, and around the world glaciers have carved out our
landscape, making what the world is today. The first glaciers circulated south from what is now
Canada. From what I ve researched the Great Lakes were once riverbeds, which provided the glaciers
perfect passage to the south. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sand dunes are mounds of windblown sand, which vary greatly in size, from less than one meter to
tens of meters high. The size depends upon the supply of sand. Many of the more recognizable dune
forms are ridges or complexes of mounds or crescents. The shape of individual dunes is equally
variable. Shape relates to the direction and strength of the wind forming it, as well as to the amount of
sand available. The impressive sand dunes along the eastern shore of Lake Michigan were created by
the prevailing westerly winds blowing the sand deposited along the beaches into the dune

Martial Arts Has Impacted Every Facet Of Korean Life
From the earliest times in Korean history, martial arts have impacted every facet of Korean life.
Martial arts in Korea have remained fluid and ever changing as a result of movement and connections
of other cultures and countries throughout Asia. It is difficult for us as Americans to understand just
how significant of an impact martial arts had on everyday life during this time in Korean history;
however, we can look into multiple key relationships to attain a better understanding of just how much
that influence had throughout the Korean peninsula. The history of Korean martial arts is rooted in
their deep connection to Korean government, culture, and religion. The three kingdoms period began

of Tae Kwon Do originated from subak and taekkyon. While this martial arts has its origins dating
back thousands of years, it is relatively modern only dating back to the 1940s and 1950s. The martial
art of tae kwon do is quite aggressive, strength versus strength. Typically tae kwon do is referred to as
a hard style art, where as hapkido, another Korean martial art is considered a soft style art. Hapkido
originated from yool sool, as well as tae kyon and unlike tae kwon do, it focused on throws and kicks
rather than strength versus strength. Hapkido and tae kwon do alike each have there differences, but
modern hapkido and tae kwon do are still seen in numerous military and security organizations as
effective methods of self defense. Korean governments, especially that of Koguryo saw an enormous
connection to the martial arts. These connections ranged from the structure and function of the
government to the basis of all order and infrastructure. Early Korean warriors and tribal units needed
martial arts as they took over and conquered other territories. Consequently, the foundations of each of
the three kingdoms is that of a fighting spirit, and marital arts. Society also encouraged the
advancement of martial arts as a means of protection from outside invasions and as a way to advance

Conflict In Interpreter Of Maladies

Conflict in Interpreter of Maladies
Many of the stories in Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri include a fundamental composition of
literary elements, such as conflict which readers see in both Interpreter of Maladies and A Temporary
Matter . Lahiri shows the difficulty of communication which overtime turn into the destruction of the
entire relationship. For instance, readers see difficulty in communication when Shukumar and Shoba
become distant shortly after she has a stillborn child. The death of their baby has severe effects their
entire relationship, and adds to their lack of communication. Similarly in Interpreter of Maladies when

instead he had thought of how he and Shoba had become experts at avoiding each other... or
whispered his name on those rare occasions they still reached for each others bodies before sleeping
(Lahiri 5). Shukumar comes to a realization that their relationship is slowly collapsing and that the
couple has drifted. He reminisces on the good times, when they were in love, made love, and when
they communicated.
Lack of communication is shown in Interpreter of Maladies when two people who speak the same
language, do not understand each other or communicate. This is best shown when Mr. and Mrs. Das
constantly argue: At the tea stall Mr. and Mrs. Das bickered about who should take Tina to the toilet.
Eventually Ms. Das relented when Mrs. Das pointed out that he had given the girl a bath the night
before (Lahiri 43). Conflict is shown between Mr. and Mrs. Das when they bicker about who will give
the girl a bath, furthermore having the child feel as if taking care of her is a chore. From this quote,
readers see that the state of their marriage is not well. As Mr. Kapasi and Mrs. Das grew closer, she
decides to share one of the biggest secrets of her life and marriage: Rajs. He s not Raj s son (Lahiri
62). Their lack of communication and isolation from each other continue as Mrs. Das keeps this to
herself. She feels that the guilt will not get to her if she explains everything to the

The Benefits
Players will find that there are plenty of benefits when it comes to using bitcoin at an online casino.
You won t have to go far to hear of why it makes sense to start using bitcoin when gambling online.
First off, using bitcoin reduces and in some cases eliminates the charges usually associated with
moving money around and between online casinos. It also means that you won t need to submit bank
or credit/debit card information to your online casino operator, increasing anonymity.
The Choices
Bitcoin has actually benefited the online casino industry from multiple standpoints, what often goes
unnoticed is the increase in casino variety it is providing. The costs of staring a small business through
bitcoin results in lower costs due to the lack of financial institution involvement. When you partner
that up with the fact that an online casino only requires a small website, bankroll, and office to launch,
you can begin to understand how bitcoin is helping further variety in the world of online casino
gambling.
The Future
What bitcoin is bringing to the world of online casino is a new dimension and with it a brand new way

Policing in Kelsey: Budget Report

Abstract
Working as the budget director for the mayor of the city of Kelsey, we have recently been getting
numerous complaints from the citizens about an increase in crime and also an issue of the public
demanding for more police officers. With the population of the city growing daily, the increase of
crime is continuing to progress as well. The mayor has informed us that this past year is the highest
increase in crime in the city s history, that the federal government has reduced the federal pass through
money for the state and that the budgeting group needs to revamp the budget for the coming year.

There are different types of budgeting that businesses typically use and those include Operating
budgets, Capital Budgets and there are many subtypes that exist because a budget can also be created
for special events, the recruitment and retention of new staff, and to manage the advertising expenses
and return on investments for a business (Demand Media, 1999 2012). According to Demand Media
(1999 2012), An operating budget outlines the total operating expenses and income for the
organization, typically for the period of a fiscal year. Capital budgets evaluate the investments and
assets of the business, and a cash budget shows the predicted cash flow in and out of the business over
a period of time (para.2 ). According to the Cost Benefit Analysis (2012), Capital budgeting has at its
core the tool of cost benefit analysis; it merely extends the basic form into a multi period analysis,
with consideration of the time value of money. In this context, a new product, venture, or investment
is evaluated on a start to finish basis, with care taken to capture all the impacts on the company, both
cost and benefits. When these inputs and outputs are quantified by year, they can then be discounted to
present value to determine the net present value of the opportunity at the time of the decision ( Cost
Benefit Analysis, 2012).

Examples Of Romanticism In Grendel Chapter 4
One movement I observed throughout chapter 4 of Grendel is romanticism. Romanticism is an
intellectual movement that where the artist s emotions toward his audience is the true. In addition,
Gardener described how people showed the positive aspects of the world through creative ideas such
as music, poetry, and images. On page 49, Gardener s use of romanticism is when Grendel noticed
how the Shaper reshaped the world. In addition, He stared strange eyed at the mindless world and
turns dry sticks to gold (Gardener). This quote clearly exemplifies romanticism to show that the
Shaper had influenced the Danes about the positive world he envisioned after the war in Chapter 3. In
order to show his vision that he said through his songs, he brought the idea of a new meadhall that
would ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He knew the Shaper was tricking the people to believe in him. Another example of Gardner s use of
romanticism is the Shaper told the story about the ancient feud between two brothers which split the
entire world between darkness and light (Gardener, pg. 50). This quote exemplifies romanticism as the
allegory of Cain and Abel. The Shaper represented Cain as darkness and Abel as the light. Grendel
honestly admitted he was the dark side because he was a descendant of Cain. Because the Shaper s
words were powerful, it made Grendel depressed. He knew that he was cursed by God, due to the
curse he inherited from Cain. However, he looked at the corpse where the man was slaughtered by a
group of men in order to conclude that both him and men were sinful and imperfect. As proof, Grendel
had seen humans kill each other throughout chapter 1 4. As the darkness is increased through Grendel
s heart, Grendel now feels the Shaper s foolishness towards tricking the humans, foreseeing a plan to
destroy humanity. John Gardner implemented romanticism in order to show that romanticism can lead
people to

The Great Expansion Of The 20th Century Essay
By the turn of the 20th century, both agricultural interests and large urban cities like San Francisco and
Los Angeles needed more water for its rapid growth. In all this great expansion of aqueducts and
dams, concerned citizens like John Muir proclaimed that more must be done to protect the majesty and
beauty of California before it is all gone. Inspired by the writing of Henry David Thoreau, which
published Walden, a landmark book on the topic of environmentalism, and his years exploring and
camping in the Sierra Nevada wilderness, Muir began to gather like minded scientists and thinkers in
San Francisco. Efforts by Muir and the formation of his Sierra Club in the 1890s eventually met with
success in convincing the federal government to protect the Yosemite Valley from logging and grazing
interests, preserving the area into a newly formed forest reserve concept of a national park (Fox, p.
106). Muir had less success in preserving the sister valley of Hetch Hetchy, which eventually was
dammed and flooded to use as a reservoir for the inhabitants of San Francisco.
Up till the 1950s, environmental activism was fractured among diverse groups with diverse causes:
water quality, overpopulation, air quality, clean beaches, toxic wastes, pesticides, endangered wildlife.
Yet, in 1950, the Sierra Club, led by native Californian David Bower, eventually secured its national
reputation in the battle against another massive dam proposal, this time the Echo Park Dam project in
Utah.

  • 2. Into Thin Air by Jon Krauker Essay The book Into Thin Air, written by Jon Krakauer, explores the struggle of man versus man and man versus nature. The very different personalities proved costly to everyone involved on the expedition. The team of climbers that were hiking toward the summit of Mt. Everest on May 10, 1996, was oblivious to what lay ahead of them. No matter how advanced the hikers were, Everest on this day would test the will and endurance of everyone attempting to reach the summit. The one element that no one person could elude was pain. Jon Krakauer stated in his book, I quickly came to understand that climbing Everest was primarily about enduring pain (136). At this point in the book, Jon was unaware of the events that would soon transpire. Even the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The pain for everyone grew increasingly greater each day that they were on the mountain. Everyone on the expedition had to dig deep into themselves to find the will to keep moving and to put their pain and fears aside. The pain that each of these men and women on this mountain were beginning to feel was pain that would linger well after they got off the mountain. Mt. Everest s summit has always seemed an unattainable goal for most people. The idea that most people have is that if I can climb Mt Everest, I can accomplish anything. To have the money and desire to try to attempt it is one thing, but being able to endure the punishment is quite another. Beck Weathers, one of the climbers on this particular expedition, had such severe frostbite that he had to have his right arm, nose and the fingers on his left hand amputated. Everyone on the expedition suffered the rigors of Everest. The two expert guides, Rob Hall and Scott Fischer, lost their lives due to a violent storm that ripped through during their descent from the summit. Their impaired judgment also contributed to their demise. Everest is no respecter of persons. Mt Everest is the most respected mountain in the whole world and if ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

These panic attacks are not occurring for any natural fear or in any danger. In fact, it happens for unnecessary, overpowering fear. When a teen gets many panic attacks he or she may start worrying about having another panic attack. This needless worry causes him or her more anxiety. Teen with Panic Disorder often experiences anxiety and avoids visiting places where a panic attack may happen. This mental disorder is called Agoraphobia. In the USA, six million people are suffering from panic attacks. Teens are suffering more than others. Hyperarousal or the severe traumatic response is common when a person faces danger. The body s expected reaction is fast and it initiates in a fraction of seconds. The sense stimulates various brain areas that are aimed to protect you by signalling you to escape or to fight with it. • 4. Stereotypes In The Hunger Of Memory By Richard Rodriguez Society will continue to judge humanity based on race, culture, and intelligence. Stereotypes affect how citizens determine their future. Demonstrated in the excerpt The Hunger of Memory, Richard Rodriguez faces stereotypes when he travels to the United States to achieve a higher education. Likewise, in the essay Superman and Me, Sherman Alexie is assumed to be less intelligent based of his ethnic background. Both of these authors futures are influenced differently based off the prejudice situations they face. Whereas Rodriguez perceives differences as continuing in a stereotypical humanity, Alexie perceives differences as expanding beyond stereotypical standards. Within the excerpt The Hunger of Memory , Richard Rodriguez delivers his inspirational story about how he came from nothing and made his life into something worthwhile. Richard Rodriguez grew up as a tremendous disadvantage kid. Richard Rodriguez states, I was a socially disadvantage disadvantaged kid (124). Since Rodriguez s family was poor, he would often be the poorest student amongst his peers. Richard Rodriguez states, ... been a classmate to children of rich parents... (125). • 5. Satire is Used in the Portraits, Gin Lane, by William... What is satire? According to oxforddictionaries.com, satire is The use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people s stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues. This literary device is portrayed heavily in both the illustrations Gin Lane by William Hogarth and in Untitled by Paul Kuczynski. Gin Lane is basically an illustration by William Hogarth that depicts life in the gin shops and shows the negative effects the drink had on the people of London. It shines a light on the horrible circumstances London was under when gin was introduced to its people. Unititled is an illustration by Paul Kuczynski that represents how our current society ... Willaim Hogarth used all these startling scenes to grab the attention of the viewer and give them an insight on London at its lowest. Through Gin Lane, Hogarth expressed the ravenous effects gin had on the people of London and how it affected the living environment as well. Untitled by Paul Kuczynski also contains satire, however the author of this portrait uses satire to depict the theme of isolation, instead of misery, poverty, ruin and neglect. This simple, yet thought provoking picture, shows a man looking through a periscope that is shaped like the Facebook symbol, to see through a window above an open door. The door is not barricaded in any way, shape or form, so the man is able to walk outside and see what is going on in the world first hand. Instead, he chooses to stay inside by himself and view the world through Facebook. Through Untitled, Kuczynski conveys the message that social media interaction is overtaking physical interaction. People are more likely to go on social media to find out what is happening than to go out and experience it themselves. Kuczynski s painting greatly showcases that even in its simplicity. Despite the fact that both pieces of art contain various differences, they contain similarities as well. Some of the differences include the message portrayed, themes and the style of drawing. • 6. How Does Amon Goeth Change In The Movie Amon Goeth is portrayed as a cruel Nazi officer who was responsible for the death of many Jews in the Krakow Ghetto. Unlike Oskar Schindler, Goeth s character did not change from the beginning of the film to the end of the film. However, in the middle of the film there was a small development in Goeth s personality from being a ruthless officer to a forgiving officer, which failed to permanently be engrained into Goeth s character. In the film, Schindler stated that war brings out the worst in people, and that Goeth would have been a different man if he was not in those circumstances. However, I do not agree that this is true for Goeth because of a very intriguing scene in the film. At the end of the movie, before Goeth was hanged for his war ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

However, it is actually a complex process involving three organ systems and many stages. When food is put in the mouth, the teeth grind it up into a paste and the amylase in the saliva begins to break down the carbohydrates. Swallowing takes the food into the oesophagus and by peristalsis moves it into the stomach. In the stomach, strong hydrochloric acid breaks down complex proteins over a period of a few hours. The resulting mixture then moves into the small intestine, the start of which is called the duodenum. Here, bile from the liver and enzymes from the pancreas mix into the food. The blood passes through the vena cava and into the right side of the heart, where the valves accelerate it towards the lungs through the pulmonary artery. • 11. The Pros And Cons Of The Seebeck Effect Energy loss is a problem encountered in every industrial process and everyday technology take power stations for example. Electricity is generated by heat engines by which gas or steam powered turbines convert the heat to mechanical energy then into electricity, however 70% of this energy is lost as heat energy. Similarly in all electronics devices energy is lost through heat. So we know that electricity creates heat mainly because or electrical devices warm up during its use. But imagine how useful it would be to generate electricity from this heat created, in other words using this lost energy which is in the form of heat to generate electricity so eventually you d be using every bit of energy to generate electric power. So the voltage that was due to the difference in temperature drives the current in a closed circuit. In order To measure this voltage, a second conductor material which generates a different voltage under the same temperature gradient must be used. Otherwise, if the same material is used for measurement, the voltage generated by the measuring conductor would simply cancel that of the first conductor. The voltage difference generated by the two materials can then be measured and related to the corresponding temperature gradient. It is thus clear that, based on Seebeck s principle; thermocouples can only measure temperature differences and need a known reference temperature to yield the absolute ... • 12. Pesticide Essay Worldwide it is estimated that approximately 1.8 billion people engage in agriculture and most use pesticides to protect the food and commercial products that they produce. Others use pesticides occupationally for public health programs, and in commercial applications, while many others use pesticides for lawn and garden applications and in and around the home (1,2). Pesticides are defined as chemical substances used to prevent, destroy, repel or mitigate any pest ranging from insects (i.e., insecticides), rodents (i.e., rodenticides) and weeds (herbicides) to microorganisms (i.e., algicides, fungicides or bactericides) (1,3). Over 1 billion pounds of pesticides are used in the United State (US) each year and approximately 5.6 billion pounds are used worldwide (1). In many developing countries programs to control exposures are limited or non existent. As a consequence; it has been estimated that as many as 25 million agricultural workers worldwide experience unintentional pesticide poisonings each year (4). In a large prospective study of pesticide users in the United States, the Agricultural Health Study, it was estimated that 16% of the cohort had at least one pesticide poisoning or an unusually high pesticide exposure episode in their lifetime (5). Although attempts to reduce pesticide use through organic agricultural practices and the use of other technologies to control pests continue, exposure to pesticides occupationally, through home and garden use, through ... • 13. Foreshadowing In The Tell Tale Heart The Tell Tale Heart is a famous horror fiction by Edgar Allan Poe. Poe is regarded as an important writer of suspense and terror tales. His stories are often composed of dark and terrifying atmosphere, and The Tell Tale Heart is also expressing terror with the story of an insane man killing the old man pitilessly. The narrator plans to kill the old man because of his vulture eye. He cruelly kills the old man and buries him under the floor. In the story, the intense feeling is created through setting, skill of foreshadowing and irony. First of all, the dark setting of the old man s room manifests terror in the story. His room was as black as pitch with the thick darkness (for the windows were close fastened, through fear of robbers), and so I knew that he could not see the opening of the door, .... (56 59). The author directly portrays the dark scene of the old man s room as black pitch, and the word thick emphasizes the deepness of the dark. If we think simply, heaven and hell are the main elements that are indicating death, so it is logical to predict death in the story. Death is a main subject of horror and it creates a heavy atmosphere in the story. Heavy atmosphere and the growing tension of death causes the emotion of fear. • 15. Analysis Of The Harvest Gypsies By Steinbeck The bare land of California faced severe drought under the scorching sun, precious crops are harvest ready, scarcely diminishing without any growers around. However, a group of benevolent nomads approaches this dying land in hopes of living among it and healing it. Migrants from all around the world travel across countries, borders, and vast terrain. California, being a famous location today in the United States, is also set to be the heaviest drought environment with very large farmlands. This land would have deteriorated, but it was healed in the most mundane way, agricultural farming. Steinbeck introduces the mere impact that these migrants they ve had in the country, but in most cases, it s not seen like that. In The Harvest Gypsies , Steinbeck writes a deliberate passage to assure that these migrants are not of the country s problem. He denounces prejudice views among them, includes the issues they face with the law, incorporates their unprecedented arrival, and alludes California s importance in migrant labor for agricultural economics. Near the beginning of the passage, Steinbeck s technique is to use specific word choices to imply that most residential views on migrants/gypsies are prejudice. • 18. Carlo Scarpa s Approach And Theory INTRODUCTION AND BUILDING HISTORY Carlo Scarpa s approach and theory to designing with existing buildings is an innovation that is relevant to buildings even today. The Castelvecchio museum is one of his greatest projects, and thoroughly reveals his way of working. Scarpas intention was not only to restore an aging building but to do so in a way that creates dialogue between the new and the old. By careful work of demolition and preservation, he literally cuts, shifts and adds elements to the existing building in order to create an exhibition of the building s past, and its connection to modernity. In order for him to make informed decisions about what to preserve and what to demolish, he had to have a thorough understanding of the building s political history. The Castelvecchio dates back as far as the 12th century, and has undergone four eras of development in its lifetime. The commune wall is the oldest element in the building and was the second of three large fortifications in Verona (Fig 1.1). In 1354, the Castelvecchio was built by the Scaligeri family, the Lords of Verona, and was built for their own defense against the citizens for times of revolt. It was built either side of the commune wall, and consisted of a three story residence or Reggia around an inner court and an outer military zone (Fig 1.2). The Castelvecchio continued this military function until 1797, where Napoleon and his troops claimed residence during his invasion over the Venetian Republic. This ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This is where an algae bloom takes place resulting in the depletion of oxygen disabling plants such as pondweed to respire and therefore die. A physical factor which can alter the vegetation of an ecosystem within the British Isles can be natural disasters. There are a range of natural disasters that take place all over the world but the ones most common in the British Isles are forest fires, floods and earthquakes. Irrespective that the value on the Richter scale is usually quite low a lot of vegetation can still be disrupted. Small plants can be uprooted and even fallen debris from damaged properties can fall upon an ecosystem and damage the already existing plants resulting in another physical factor secondary succession leading to other species colonising the land and becoming the dominant species. In addition, forest fires and floods act in a similar way. There are different types of budgeting that businesses typically use and those include Operating budgets, Capital Budgets and there are many subtypes that exist because a budget can also be created for special events, the recruitment and retention of new staff, and to manage the advertising expenses and return on investments for a business (Demand Media, 1999 2012). According to Demand Media (1999 2012), An operating budget outlines the total operating expenses and income for the organization, typically for the period of a fiscal year. Capital budgets evaluate the investments and assets of the business, and a cash budget shows the predicted cash flow in and out of the business over a period of time (para.2 ). According to the Cost Benefit Analysis (2012), Capital budgeting has at its core the tool of cost benefit analysis; it merely extends the basic form into a multi period analysis, with consideration of the time value of money. In this context, a new product, venture, or investment is evaluated on a start to finish basis, with care taken to capture all the impacts on the company, both cost and benefits. When these inputs and outputs are quantified by year, they can then be discounted to present value to determine the net present value of the opportunity at the time of the decision ( Cost Benefit Analysis, 2012). • 36. Examples Of Romanticism In Grendel Chapter 4 One movement I observed throughout chapter 4 of Grendel is romanticism. Romanticism is an intellectual movement that where the artist s emotions toward his audience is the true. In addition, Gardener described how people showed the positive aspects of the world through creative ideas such as music, poetry, and images. On page 49, Gardener s use of romanticism is when Grendel noticed how the Shaper reshaped the world. In addition, He stared strange eyed at the mindless world and turns dry sticks to gold (Gardener). This quote clearly exemplifies romanticism to show that the Shaper had influenced the Danes about the positive world he envisioned after the war in Chapter 3. In order to show his vision that he said through his songs, he brought the idea of a new meadhall that would ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He knew the Shaper was tricking the people to believe in him. Another example of Gardner s use of romanticism is the Shaper told the story about the ancient feud between two brothers which split the entire world between darkness and light (Gardener, pg. 50). This quote exemplifies romanticism as the allegory of Cain and Abel. The Shaper represented Cain as darkness and Abel as the light. Grendel honestly admitted he was the dark side because he was a descendant of Cain. Because the Shaper s words were powerful, it made Grendel depressed. He knew that he was cursed by God, due to the curse he inherited from Cain. However, he looked at the corpse where the man was slaughtered by a group of men in order to conclude that both him and men were sinful and imperfect. As proof, Grendel had seen humans kill each other throughout chapter 1 4. As the darkness is increased through Grendel s heart, Grendel now feels the Shaper s foolishness towards tricking the humans, foreseeing a plan to destroy humanity. John Gardner implemented romanticism in order to show that romanticism can lead people to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 38. The Great Expansion Of The 20th Century Essay By the turn of the 20th century, both agricultural interests and large urban cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles needed more water for its rapid growth. In all this great expansion of aqueducts and dams, concerned citizens like John Muir proclaimed that more must be done to protect the majesty and beauty of California before it is all gone. Inspired by the writing of Henry David Thoreau, which published Walden, a landmark book on the topic of environmentalism, and his years exploring and camping in the Sierra Nevada wilderness, Muir began to gather like minded scientists and thinkers in San Francisco. Efforts by Muir and the formation of his Sierra Club in the 1890s eventually met with success in convincing the federal government to protect the Yosemite Valley from logging and grazing interests, preserving the area into a newly formed forest reserve concept of a national park (Fox, p. 106). Muir had less success in preserving the sister valley of Hetch Hetchy, which eventually was dammed and flooded to use as a reservoir for the inhabitants of San Francisco. Up till the 1950s, environmental activism was fractured among diverse groups with diverse causes: water quality, overpopulation, air quality, clean beaches, toxic wastes, pesticides, endangered wildlife. Yet, in 1950, the Sierra Club, led by native Californian David Bower, eventually secured its national reputation in the battle against another massive dam proposal, this time the Echo Park Dam project in Utah. ...
