Stereotypes In The 1950s Era
The stereotypes of a teenager haven t changed much over the years; nevertheless, the fads have.
The fun, lively 1950s era brought poodle skirts, jukeboxes, hot rods, and Elvis Presley; things
we don t normally see unless it is Halloween. Teenagers danced at sock hops, where there was
never a night upbeat dance moves such as the twist and the jive weren t danced. The seemingly
large predicaments of the world today were insignificant back then. Life, as it seems, was simpler.
Today, many people swoon over the idea of living in the 1950sera; however, I would prefer to live
in the time period that I live in now because of fashion, schooling, and technology.
Fashion in the 1950s and now are disparate. Back then, most mothers sewed clothes for their
children, and fabric cost roughly $1 per yard. Girls didn t regularly buy clothes from the
department store because their mothers had time to sew their modish outfits. Girls were
required to wear dresses or skirts to school because pants weren t befitting enough at the time for
women. Poodle skirts, as well as sweaters, were quite popular. Girls wore nylons with their attire,
but nylons are made differently now. Nylons back then were 2, basically full leg long socks,
whereas, today they are sewn together as one. They wore belts to hold the nylons up, and they had
a seam up the back. Popular hairstyles back then included the back comb, and embellishing flowers
around the bun. As the role of a woman in society has evolved, so has a

Washington Irving Research Paper
Washington Irving American Literature Pioneer
American literature greatly flourished in the nineteenth century through remarkable works of
American Romantic authors. Among these people was Washington Irving who achieved
international fame for his fictional works as well as for his biographies and historical writings.
Irving also advocated for writing as a legitimate career, and argued for stronger laws to protect
writers from copyright infringement (Bio). Washington Irving exemplified the Romantic Era
because he emphasized feelings, emotion, and imagination, and he valued individualism and
uniqueness of each person. Washington Irving was a popular nineteenth century American author
best known for the stories Rip Van Winkle and The Legend... Show more content on

In Life of Washington Irving, the author described and scrutinized Irving s biography,
aspirations and ethics, W. Prescott [American Historian] believed that Irving availed himself of
all picturesque and animating movements of the period which he had treated, and that he was
not seduced from historical accuracy by the poetical aspect of his subject... (Stoddard 26). This
quote illustrated Irving s uniqueness as a person where he created his insight from his own
accounts instead of adapting information from similar works. In Rip Van Winkle , the
protagonist enjoys solitary activities in the wilderness (Enotes.com) [In the forest] he would
sometimes seat himself at the contents of his wallet with Wolf, with whom [Rip] sympathized as
a fellow sufferer in persecution (Irving 15). Irving used this quote to exemplify his individualism,
where he developed a connection between a man and a wolf. He used Rip Van Winkle to
illustrate how being unique is beneficial to a person because as Rip Van Winkle wandered in the
forest and slept while others were busy working, time passed by and he did not witness harsh events

Memory in Beloved Essay
Clariza Gutierrez
April 16, 2012
English 320
In everyone s life there is a moment that is so dreadful and horrific that it is best to try to push it
further and further back into your mind. When traumatized by death for example it is very natural
to shut off the memory in order to self defense suppresses the awful emotional experience. Very
often it is thoughtful that this neglecting and abandoning is the best way to forget. In Toni Morrison
s novel Beloved, memory is depicted as a dangerous and deliberating faculty of human
consciousness. In this novel Sethe endures the oppression of self imposed prison of memory by
revising the past and death of her daughter Beloved, her mother and Baby Suggs. In Louise Erdrich

She must have nursed me two or three weeks that s the way the others did (pg 73). Again here we
see how milk to a child is important to Sethe because it is the only interaction that she had with her
daughter Beloved and her nameless mother. Even though Sethe tries to understand and cope with
the past, Beloved generates a metamorphosis in Sethe that allows her to speak what she had thought
to be the unspeakable.
With Beloved s arrival and back into Seth s life, Sethe also feels the need of going back into the
memory of Baby Suggs, her mother in law. Baby Suggs held religious gatherings at a place called
the clearing, where she taught her followers to love their voices, bodies and minds. However, after
Sethe s act of infanticide, Baby Suggs stops preaching and retreats to a sick bed to die.
Accompanied by Denver and Beloved, Sethe feels the need to go to the clearing where Baby
Suggs used to preach. Baby Suggs long distance love was equal to any skin close love she had
known. The desire, let alone the gesture, to meet her needs was good enough to lift her spirits to
the place where she could take the next step (pg 112). In this section the memory of Baby Suggs
also comes onto the surface, making Sethe want to remember her death by the presence of Beloved.
Similar to Toni Morrison s novel Beloved, Erdrich s novel Love Medicine shows characters also
dealing with memory of death and the

Social Stressors
Men are more vulnerable to various social stressors due to influence of internal psychology and
external gender roles. While males and females both experience social stressors that contribute to
suicide, data has shown that these social stressors have a stronger effect on males (Watt and Sharp,
2001). In particular, a statistical analysis on suicidal adolescents demonstrated that men are more
impacted by social strains related to esteem and status, known as status strains. One key social
stressor that is also tied to status trains is related to socioeconomic class. The suicideprofile of a
male completer tends to be unemployed (Coleman, Kaplan and Casey, 2011). Using the analytical
psychological escape theory of suicide, it is possible to determine that perceived failure of failing
socioeconomically can contribute to suicide rates. Also, as stated earlier, the male genderrole
focuses on being a provider. Not being able to fill that gender role can result in feelings of distress
leading to the act of suicide.
Occupations that are more often held by men, tend to put them at a higher risk of suicide. Men, in
general, tend to work in more high stress occupations than females (Roberts, Jaremin and Lloyd, ...

While this may appear contradictory there is a simple explanation behind this fact. As stated
earlier, there tends to be more social supports for women than men: men tend to be more
isolated. Marriage is a protective factor against suicide for men but not for women (Gold, 2005).
This is due to lack of social bonds in men. men in general have only their spouse who acts as a
main social support in times of distress. Meanwhile, women have many others to call upon in
times of distress. This puts men at a higher risk of suicide since one of their few social support
systems will disappear after experiencing relationship

American Sniper Character Analysis
A good movie about a person s life, especially one that involves real life wars has to be
convincing. That means the actor must be compelling of who the character actually is, in
addition to the scenes being true to the actual event, place and time. I also believe the plot of the
story is essential as a true drama is one classified as the hero dying or making you feel sad.
American Sniper , a drama and true story about a legendary sniper and navy seal, Kris Kyle
accomplishes the heartfelt experience of family, death, commitment and the life of a true soldier.
With his record of confirmed kills, he earned the nickname The Legend by his team, on the other
hand, the enemy wanted him dead. Directed by Clint Eastwood, the actors, the set, themes,... Show

I really liked this as it made you realize what being directly in the war zone is like for a soldier.
When he has to make the decision to shoot a woman and a child to save American lives. The
woman was his first confirmed kill (Turan). He has flashbacks, which immediately got my
attention and wanted to see more. Differing from other war movies, like The Hurt Locker , the
war veteran is as reckless solider. Whereas, Cooper does a better job at making Kyle seem like a
more welcoming character. There is no question what his intentions are throughout the entire
movie. While he struggles with home and deployment, he gives an excellent performance on
what it is really like to face decisions where there is a sacrifice either way. His character really
shines through and make anyone think about what goes through a person s mind and what they
have been through. For me, when he was in the tire shop and the young man approached and
recognized him, thanking him for saving his life, his voice, tone and demeanor
shifted...stuttering, his voice dropped and at a loss for words, coming across discourteous. What I
didn t like was the character Taya Kyle, played by Sienna Miller. I can t imagine the wife would be
unsupportive. Didn t really believe her

The Importance of Wildlife Conservation
Imagine a world with barren trees in overgrown fields. The only sound to be heard is the wind
blowing through the tall grass. A world once full of life now lays empty do to extinction. This is
the result of a world that failed to understand the importance of wildlife conservation. Why is
wildlife so important? What steps need to be taken to preserve wildlife? How can one become
involved in wildlife conservation? These are all important questions that need to be explored in
order to help maintain the delicate ecosystem on Earth. Wildlife plays a vital role in this fragile
ecosystem and without wildlife the human race would not survive. The initial step in wildlife

According to David Stauth, towards the end of the 1800s humans began to eradicate the wolf
population in the Yellowstone area. (David Stauth) By 1926 the wolf population was destroyed.
(David Stauth) During the 1800s and 1900s the West was popular for cattle ranches. Ranchers
saw the wolves as pests destroying their profits due to the wolves feeding on the cattle. Thus
began the beginning of the collapse of an ecosystem. With wolves missing from the ecosystem
everything became greatly unbalanced leading to a domino effect. No longer fearing the wolves,
elk began to freely graze which in turn began the destruction of foliage. The foliage destruction
affected other animals that relied on the vegetation for sustenance and shelter. With the lack of
vegetation, animals begin migrating elsewhere for food and harborage. Not only were the wolves
gone, other animals began to either over populate or disappear along with the foliage. Hence the
slow beginning of a land that would eventually become bare of life. One can now understand why
wildlife conservation is so important after learning the effects of simply removing one key element
from the ecosystem. To further this understanding of the importance of wildlife conservation
observe the affects of reintroducing the wolves in Yellowstone . Beginning at the end of 1994 and

How Did Manet Portray Women Naked In The 19th Century
Such a scandal it was to paint women naked in the nineteenth century. Not a goddess or a mythical
creature, but a real, contemporary french woman. No matter how beautifully it was painted, this
type of subject matter was simply not supposed to be done. This was such the case for Г‰douard
Manet, a french painter in the nineteenth century. In 1863 he created Le dГ©jeuner sur l herbe or
The luncheon on the grass, an oil on canvas impressionist style painting. Not only was there
controversy in the subject matter but in the way it was painted as well. The luncheon on the grass
depicts four people; two men and two women, having a lunch out in the woods. The two men
appear to be locked in conversation while they sit with the company of a womanin nude. The
woman s clothes in scattered in the left hand corner of the painting, as if they were quickly shed
off her body. The second woman appears further back in the composition, standing in a small pond.
All three appear to be dressed in contemporary... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They had the capability to take a photograph of what they desired to paint, and then return to their
studio to paint it. This brought rise to a more photographic style of painting, which often flattened
the subject matter. This can be very easily seen here in Manet s painting. One could say it was a
lighter version of tenebrism; the technique that used harsh light and darks. typically in this style of
painting the figures are in extreme light while the background is rather dark, similar to what
photography lightly would give. The woman in nude appears in a very bright, stark manner against
the dark clothing of the man she is sitting beside. She appears very flat, almost as if she was cut
out from another painting and placed there. Tenebrism isn t the only technique used to create this
painting, for the brush strokes move away from clean and precise lines to more impressionistic

The wages of fear was a fun and fantastic movie. Going into this, I realized that I wanted to watch

Frenchmen Mario, and Jo, Dutchman Bimba, and Italian Luigi being stranded in the remote town
of Las Piedras. Circled by desert, the city is connected to the outside world only by a minute
airport, but the airfare is much too expensive for the guys. There is limited opening for

Despite the risks, many of the locals enlist, seduced by the high pay off two grand per driver.
This is an absolute fortune to them, and the money is viewed by some as the only means out of
their hopeless lives. The pool of candidates is thinned down to four drivers: Mario, Bimba, and
Luigi are taken, along with a man named Smirnoff. However, he fails to emerge on the designated
day, so Jo, who knows O Brien from his unlawful days, is replaced in his absence. The other
drivers assume that Jo assassinated Smirnoff to aid in his private hiring.
Jo and Mario move the nitroglycerin in one vehicle; Bimba and Luigi in the other, with thirty
minutes parting them to limit possible losses. The drivers are made to deal with a string of physical
and mental hindrances, including a stretch of notably rugged road called the washboard, a
construction barrier that requires them to wobble around a rotten platform above a mountain, and a
boulder obstructing the road. Jo discovers that his nerves are not what they used to be, and the
others confront Jo about his growing weakness. Finally, Luigi and Bimba s truck detonates without
warning, annihilating them

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) produces images of organs and structures inside the body
by using magnetic field and pulses of radiofrequency (RF) energy. An MRI machine consists of
two powerful magnets that generate strong magnetic field when electricity is passed through a
conductive field coil. Human body contains large amount of water molecules that are randomly
arranged. Upon entering the machine, the hydrogen nuclei of the water molecules align in one
direction. Then, a second RF pulse is applied in a series of quick pulses that cause the hydrogen
nuclei to be out of spin alignment. When the RF pulse is switched off, the hydrogen nuclei realign
themselves and relax by releasing RF signals, also known as free induction decay (FID) response

Emmeline Pankhurst s Suffragettes
Separating Right and Wrong: Emmeline Pankhurst s Suffragette Movement
Women s suffrage has been one of the unsolved problems of the last two centuries. Today, many
countries constitutionalized women s right to vote; however there remain a few that outlaw it. This
ban resulted in women fighting for the right to vote in the 19th century, which gave birth suffrage
movements. While the suffragettes were emerging from all around the world, The United Kingdom
was the heart of the movement, with Emmeline Pankhurst as one of the main figures and she played
a crucial role in women s suffrage in Britain; however her work has been criticized and argued by
historians for their militant tactics and their effectiveness. To this date, it remains arguable... Show

Other women all around the world began protesting under the name of Suffragettes and the
movement quickly became epidemic. While there were many approaches in history for the same
purpose, United States, Ireland, Canada and many more women around the world adopted the
methods of the suffragettes to their own cause. The reason why the British suffragettes influenced
so many other women is explained in a research paper by Laura E. Nym Mayhall as ...Once the
Liberal government introduced forcible feeding as an antidote to the suffragette hunger strike,
militants created a visual activism, dependent upon the exhibition of women s tortured bodies as
spectacle. By this account, the activities of the WSPU became exemplary of what critic Barbara
Green has called performative activism and visibility politics in early twentieth century feminist
praxis, creating almost entirely feminine communities where women celebrated, suffered, spoke
with, and wrote for other women, and that allowed women to put themselves on display for other
women. Many women in the 19th century looked up to Emmeline Pankhurst, listened to her
speeches, went to her propaganda walks and adopted her methods and women in Britain gained the
right to vote in 1928, for men and women over 21, without any other requests of marital status or
property, as other countries followed

Ericsson s sales dropped by 52%, recording a $1.39 billion loss which preceded an announcement

A joint venture with Sony allows a large R amp;D division focusing on mobile, which is vital to
ensure its network business stays in touch with consumer demands. Sony has a strong reputation
on the domain of digital and audio technology. However, Sony was a marginal player in the
handset industry with 2% of market share. Previous attempts to enter the US and European
markets both failed due to poor knowledge on mobile technology. Sony was too slow to move
away from its traditional businesses such as music stereos, televisions, VCR and DVD, hence a
partner who could provide expertise knowledge was needed. Joint ventures have further benefits.
Joint ventures are based on sharing individual ability and resources for the purpose of achieving a
mutually beneficial objective. Sony gains access to Ericsson s market share and their network of
infrastructure and handset technology. Ericsson can acquire Sony s experience on consumer
electronics, fashionable designs and production processes. Hence, the joint venture overcomes Sony
s low market share and strengthens Ericsson s ability of research and product development. Thus
joint ventures resolve the opportunism issue with OEM, licensing and franchising. In addition, both
companies gain access to foreign markets. Joint ventures allow Sony to get back to global business

Power Struggle In Literature
Power Struggles
A measure of a man is what he does with power. These wise words were once said by the classical
greek philosopher Plato, and can be applied to our society and fictional societies to this day. In
literature, it can be applied to the societies of Lamb to the Slaughter by Roald Dahl, Ponies by Kij
Johnson, and Honor to Us All from Disney s Mulan. Marxism (the theory that is used to look at
conflicts and imbalances of power in literature/societies) and Feminism (the study/advocacy of
equality for men and women rights) can be used to implement this quote into fiction. An
examination of these three stories reveals that sexism causes power struggles in societies.

Each pony represents a girls spirit: their voice, their freedom (wings), and their ability to fight
back (horns). When they go to a cutting out party, they get these things taken away from them,
leaving them powerless. This is important because there is a power imbalance and struggle
between those who get their power taken away from them and those who don t. The author is
showing what could happen if expectations are deeply ingrained into a community making it hard
to break away. In these societies, girls are objectified and have their power taken away, which
creates a struggle between the sexes. A power struggle can also be proved when characters try to
defy authority. When characters defy authority, there are often consequences. An example of this is
when Sunny shows defiance in Ponies. Sunny spins and runs.... but there are more of the others and
they are bigger, and Sunny doesn t have her wings to fly or her horn to fight. They pull her down
before she can jump the fence into the woods beyond. Sunny cries, and there is nothing, only the
sound if pounding hooves from the tight circle. (Kij Johnson, p.3). Sunny is defying the authority,
which are the girls and their ponies, so the ponies kill her. This is significant because it shows that
of anything threatens the ponies/girls control, they immediately put out the rebellion. The Girls

Love As A Love Poem
It is a love poem that is written in an unusual form of dialogue. This dialogue between the lovers
adds personality to the poem. The lovers however know one another and have a shared history. As
he still attempts to amaze the woman even after she has criticized him. It is vague whether the poet
is openly communicating with her or is it only a conversation that is occurring in his mind.
However, I will assume that it is a conversation that is a reality and that the poet is communicating
directly with the woman as the poem indicates in the first stanzaShe says : (Line2) and She insists
(Line4) also mentioned in the final stanza She says (Line8). Therefore, this suggests that they are

This suggests that the poet is writing from his heart and feelings which characterizes the poem
as sincere and genuine. The poet attempts to redeem himself after the woman has criticized him
in the first stanza. However, he would have desired to remain with the technique of a metaphoric
dialogue. The poet however uses a different representation in this stanza as the woman would
prefer a more literal dialogue of his love as she insists Then you d better think twice (Line4). The
woman is aware that the poet is capable of better quality writing. This indicates that they have a
shared history. It suggests that the woman motivates the poet to write better (Line 4) and also she
acts as inspiration for the poet. The first and second stanzas complement each other. The fact that
the poet uses a different dialogue technique in the second stanza reveals his love for this woman.
The poet is willing to terminate his own writing technique for her So I write (Line5). He would
adjust the dialogue of the poem if it were to make the woman delighted and captivated. This is the
reason it is a love poem, despite it being written in an unconventional dialogue. The poet would

The And Collective Memory Of The First World War
Contemporary Canadian reimagining of the First World war is from the book Catching the
torch by a Brock University teacher Neta Gordon. She wrote this book in 2014. She tries to
explain to the reader the conflict between history and collective memory of the First World War.
With many other essays, she focuses on the role of the Canadian army in the First World war. As
we know, the Canadian army entered the war in early 1915 to offer help to the Britain soldiers
fighting against the Germans. The Canadian army was basically forced to join because they were a
member of the British Empire.
On the one hand, Gordon quotes from Jonathan Vance s Death So Noble: Memory, meaning and
the First world war: the dominant or collective memory of a ... Show more content on

Most of the work that Gordon studied and with the publication date from this book, we can also
say that collective memory is not a whole. Most of the soldiers are dead at this time and she had
to rely on works that were published years later after the First War. Gordon quoted Winter in the
first few chapters of her book, he stated: This sense of the socially constructed nature of
collective memory is vital to historical study, since it precludes talking about memory as if it
exists independently of the people who share it (2). From what I understand from the few pages
that we had to read and with my research done with the whole book, the collective memory is
based on the present memory, but since the soldiers they rely on are no longer in a group or in the
same place, it is mostly a memory from one person.
Another thing she said that made me realize how true her statement was with the novel that we
studied during this term. She stated that: many of the narratives this volume examines rehabilitate
the figure of the father and/or conception of productive masculinity; many follow in the tradition
of early twentieth century home front novels by women to consider the value of female work, in
wartime and beyond [...] and most conclude with a look to the future (which is now the present)
and a sense of promise that is decidedly free from irony. (21 22)

The Fine Line Between Harlot And Handmaiden

one can easily create a terrifying dystopia where all fabrics of society suffer the erosive

Sex Education And Comprehensive Sexual Education
Let s talk about sex. Stances on comprehensive sexual education vary, whether it be from
religious beliefs or past experiences, different views are held throughout. It is in the interests of
society in general... for every secondary school pupil to be in receipt of sexual education (Cumper

idea of a pregnant and STD ridden 15 year old tends to frighten a million times more than the
thought of proper contraception use and safe sexual encounters. Although the likeliness of a parent

The infamous ideal of waiting until marriage, no matter if it s right or not, is claimed as the set

could provide the solution to this because it could eliminate or at least minimize the amounts of
carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere. Scientists have found that CO2 is a direct
contributor to global warming and alternative energy could save the planet. The two alternative
energy sources, nuclear and solar, could help with this issue. They would be most effective in
Denver, Colorado because it is a desert area that gets very little rainfall and it allows for
isolation. Both nuclear and solar would help because both of these sources do not emit any

When Orthopedist considers which analgesia to use after Total knee arthroplasty

Over the last decade significant efforts have been made to improve pain control following TKA,
but it is still very challenging to get full optimal control with fewer adverse sides effects. Current

Such efforts are by no means new as neighborhood revitalization through the civic engagement of
residents in low income communities has long been a funding priority of the philanthropic
community. The African American community in particular, hard hit by social and economic
challenges, presents many opportunities for the increased civic engagement on the part of residents
to promote changes in approaches and strategies. Community foundations have the resources and
commitment to community revitalization to make significant inroads into solving the problems in
low income communities.
Tester, Ruel, Anderson, Reitzes, and Oakley (2011) describe issues such as urban renewal as
directly responsible for the decline and destruction of low income African American communities.
They argue that strategies such as relocating residents of public housing and high crime areas for
example are not solutions to the root cause of the problem lack of support, inadequate resources,
and isolation. Further, relocating residents of these communities does not result in improved quality
of life. In fact, those moved out of one low income community typically migrate to a similar type
of community that is usually only a few miles from where they originally resided. It is at the
community level in everyday activities that citizens can experience the most measurable and
impactful degree of civic engagement.

Essay on Complexity Theory
The words complexity and complex have been used in the context of management. While the word
complex suggests dynamics rising from the interaction between elements, factors, parts, it results in
nonlinear and ongoing changes in the parts. The word complexity is used different ways in many
organization systems. The different uses of this word is dependent on the systems being chartered
and organized. Nowadays, complexitytheory is at the center of what systems are today and it is
attached with the concept that a system is more than a set of machines. Regarding complexity

Complexity theory tries to rationalize the behavior of complex systems by attempting to discover
how the separated factors of a system cooperate together to shape the system and its outcomes.
Characteristics of Complexity theory
Complexity theory also has some basic characteristics: Complexity theory is characterized by a
number of similar elements but they are separated. These elements interact information together by
receiving from their neighbors.
While elements keep interacting together, one agent s actions will affect to another agents so based
on these action, they divide into two kinds of feedback which are negative and positive feedback
which are the unique feature that differ the complex system from a complicated system. Due to
these characteristics, small changes in one area can make a large changes in the whole systems: It
is not always easy to determine and identify the boundaries of a complex system. The boundary
often comes from the observer s needs. But sometimes, we can base on the property of the systems
to find the boundaries of a complex system. History is an important characteristic in complex
systems. It is easy to recognize that all the actions, reactions, and behaviors in the past can influence
the current s behavior. Besides, the complex system also has some other

During my time as a CyberNavigator, I worked in numerous underprivileged communities where I

  • 2. Stereotypes In The 1950s Era The stereotypes of a teenager haven t changed much over the years; nevertheless, the fads have. The fun, lively 1950s era brought poodle skirts, jukeboxes, hot rods, and Elvis Presley; things we don t normally see unless it is Halloween. Teenagers danced at sock hops, where there was never a night upbeat dance moves such as the twist and the jive weren t danced. The seemingly large predicaments of the world today were insignificant back then. Life, as it seems, was simpler. Today, many people swoon over the idea of living in the 1950sera; however, I would prefer to live in the time period that I live in now because of fashion, schooling, and technology. Fashion in the 1950s and now are disparate. Back then, most mothers sewed clothes for their children, and fabric cost roughly $1 per yard. Girls didn t regularly buy clothes from the department store because their mothers had time to sew their modish outfits. Girls were required to wear dresses or skirts to school because pants weren t befitting enough at the time for women. Poodle skirts, as well as sweaters, were quite popular. Girls wore nylons with their attire, but nylons are made differently now. Nylons back then were 2, basically full leg long socks, whereas, today they are sewn together as one. They wore belts to hold the nylons up, and they had a seam up the back. Popular hairstyles back then included the back comb, and embellishing flowers around the bun. As the role of a woman in society has evolved, so has a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Washington Irving Research Paper Washington Irving American Literature Pioneer American literature greatly flourished in the nineteenth century through remarkable works of American Romantic authors. Among these people was Washington Irving who achieved international fame for his fictional works as well as for his biographies and historical writings. Irving also advocated for writing as a legitimate career, and argued for stronger laws to protect writers from copyright infringement (Bio). Washington Irving exemplified the Romantic Era because he emphasized feelings, emotion, and imagination, and he valued individualism and uniqueness of each person. Washington Irving was a popular nineteenth century American author best known for the stories Rip Van Winkle and The Legend... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Life of Washington Irving, the author described and scrutinized Irving s biography, aspirations and ethics, W. Prescott [American Historian] believed that Irving availed himself of all picturesque and animating movements of the period which he had treated, and that he was not seduced from historical accuracy by the poetical aspect of his subject... (Stoddard 26). This quote illustrated Irving s uniqueness as a person where he created his insight from his own accounts instead of adapting information from similar works. In Rip Van Winkle , the protagonist enjoys solitary activities in the wilderness (Enotes.com) [In the forest] he would sometimes seat himself at the contents of his wallet with Wolf, with whom [Rip] sympathized as a fellow sufferer in persecution (Irving 15). Irving used this quote to exemplify his individualism, where he developed a connection between a man and a wolf. He used Rip Van Winkle to illustrate how being unique is beneficial to a person because as Rip Van Winkle wandered in the forest and slept while others were busy working, time passed by and he did not witness harsh events present in the American ... • 4. Memory in Beloved Essay Clariza Gutierrez April 16, 2012 English 320 In everyone s life there is a moment that is so dreadful and horrific that it is best to try to push it further and further back into your mind. When traumatized by death for example it is very natural to shut off the memory in order to self defense suppresses the awful emotional experience. Very often it is thoughtful that this neglecting and abandoning is the best way to forget. In Toni Morrison s novel Beloved, memory is depicted as a dangerous and deliberating faculty of human consciousness. In this novel Sethe endures the oppression of self imposed prison of memory by revising the past and death of her daughter Beloved, her mother and Baby Suggs. In Louise Erdrich s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She must have nursed me two or three weeks that s the way the others did (pg 73). Again here we see how milk to a child is important to Sethe because it is the only interaction that she had with her daughter Beloved and her nameless mother. Even though Sethe tries to understand and cope with the past, Beloved generates a metamorphosis in Sethe that allows her to speak what she had thought to be the unspeakable. With Beloved s arrival and back into Seth s life, Sethe also feels the need of going back into the memory of Baby Suggs, her mother in law. Baby Suggs held religious gatherings at a place called the clearing, where she taught her followers to love their voices, bodies and minds. However, after Sethe s act of infanticide, Baby Suggs stops preaching and retreats to a sick bed to die. Accompanied by Denver and Beloved, Sethe feels the need to go to the clearing where Baby Suggs used to preach. Baby Suggs long distance love was equal to any skin close love she had known. The desire, let alone the gesture, to meet her needs was good enough to lift her spirits to the place where she could take the next step (pg 112). In this section the memory of Baby Suggs also comes onto the surface, making Sethe want to remember her death by the presence of Beloved. Similar to Toni Morrison s novel Beloved, Erdrich s novel Love Medicine shows characters also dealing with memory of death and the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Social Stressors Men are more vulnerable to various social stressors due to influence of internal psychology and external gender roles. While males and females both experience social stressors that contribute to suicide, data has shown that these social stressors have a stronger effect on males (Watt and Sharp, 2001). In particular, a statistical analysis on suicidal adolescents demonstrated that men are more impacted by social strains related to esteem and status, known as status strains. One key social stressor that is also tied to status trains is related to socioeconomic class. The suicideprofile of a male completer tends to be unemployed (Coleman, Kaplan and Casey, 2011). Using the analytical psychological escape theory of suicide, it is possible to determine that perceived failure of failing socioeconomically can contribute to suicide rates. Also, as stated earlier, the male genderrole focuses on being a provider. Not being able to fill that gender role can result in feelings of distress leading to the act of suicide. Occupations that are more often held by men, tend to put them at a higher risk of suicide. Men, in general, tend to work in more high stress occupations than females (Roberts, Jaremin and Lloyd, ... As stated earlier, there tends to be more social supports for women than men: men tend to be more isolated. Marriage is a protective factor against suicide for men but not for women (Gold, 2005). This is due to lack of social bonds in men. men in general have only their spouse who acts as a main social support in times of distress. Meanwhile, women have many others to call upon in times of distress. This puts men at a higher risk of suicide since one of their few social support systems will disappear after experiencing relationship ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. American Sniper Character Analysis A good movie about a person s life, especially one that involves real life wars has to be convincing. That means the actor must be compelling of who the character actually is, in addition to the scenes being true to the actual event, place and time. I also believe the plot of the story is essential as a true drama is one classified as the hero dying or making you feel sad. American Sniper , a drama and true story about a legendary sniper and navy seal, Kris Kyle accomplishes the heartfelt experience of family, death, commitment and the life of a true soldier. With his record of confirmed kills, he earned the nickname The Legend by his team, on the other hand, the enemy wanted him dead. Directed by Clint Eastwood, the actors, the set, themes,... When he has to make the decision to shoot a woman and a child to save American lives. The woman was his first confirmed kill (Turan). He has flashbacks, which immediately got my attention and wanted to see more. Differing from other war movies, like The Hurt Locker , the war veteran is as reckless solider. Whereas, Cooper does a better job at making Kyle seem like a more welcoming character. There is no question what his intentions are throughout the entire movie. While he struggles with home and deployment, he gives an excellent performance on what it is really like to face decisions where there is a sacrifice either way. His character really shines through and make anyone think about what goes through a person s mind and what they have been through. For me, when he was in the tire shop and the young man approached and recognized him, thanking him for saving his life, his voice, tone and demeanor shifted...stuttering, his voice dropped and at a loss for words, coming across discourteous. According to David Stauth, towards the end of the 1800s humans began to eradicate the wolf population in the Yellowstone area. (David Stauth) By 1926 the wolf population was destroyed. (David Stauth) During the 1800s and 1900s the West was popular for cattle ranches. Ranchers saw the wolves as pests destroying their profits due to the wolves feeding on the cattle. Thus began the beginning of the collapse of an ecosystem. With wolves missing from the ecosystem everything became greatly unbalanced leading to a domino effect. No longer fearing the wolves, elk began to freely graze which in turn began the destruction of foliage. The foliage destruction affected other animals that relied on the vegetation for sustenance and shelter. With the lack of vegetation, animals begin migrating elsewhere for food and harborage. Not only were the wolves gone, other animals began to either over populate or disappear along with the foliage. Hence the slow beginning of a land that would eventually become bare of life. One can now understand why wildlife conservation is so important after learning the effects of simply removing one key element from the ecosystem. To further this understanding of the importance of wildlife conservation observe the affects of reintroducing the wolves in Yellowstone . Beginning at the end of 1994 and continuing ... Not a goddess or a mythical creature, but a real, contemporary french woman. No matter how beautifully it was painted, this type of subject matter was simply not supposed to be done. This was such the case for Г‰douard Manet, a french painter in the nineteenth century. In 1863 he created Le dГ©jeuner sur l herbe or The luncheon on the grass, an oil on canvas impressionist style painting. Not only was there controversy in the subject matter but in the way it was painted as well. The luncheon on the grass depicts four people; two men and two women, having a lunch out in the woods. The two men appear to be locked in conversation while they sit with the company of a womanin nude. While there were many approaches in history for the same purpose, United States, Ireland, Canada and many more women around the world adopted the methods of the suffragettes to their own cause. The reason why the British suffragettes influenced so many other women is explained in a research paper by Laura E. Nym Mayhall as ...Once the Liberal government introduced forcible feeding as an antidote to the suffragette hunger strike, militants created a visual activism, dependent upon the exhibition of women s tortured bodies as spectacle. By this account, the activities of the WSPU became exemplary of what critic Barbara Green has called performative activism and visibility politics in early twentieth century feminist praxis, creating almost entirely feminine communities where women celebrated, suffered, spoke with, and wrote for other women, and that allowed women to put themselves on display for other women. Many women in the 19th century looked up to Emmeline Pankhurst, listened to her speeches, went to her propaganda walks and adopted her methods and women in Britain gained the right to vote in 1928, for men and women over 21, without any other requests of marital status or property, as other countries followed ... Marxism (the theory that is used to look at conflicts and imbalances of power in literature/societies) and Feminism (the study/advocacy of equality for men and women rights) can be used to implement this quote into fiction. Each pony represents a girls spirit: their voice, their freedom (wings), and their ability to fight back (horns). When they go to a cutting out party, they get these things taken away from them, leaving them powerless. This is important because there is a power imbalance and struggle between those who get their power taken away from them and those who don t. The author is showing what could happen if expectations are deeply ingrained into a community making it hard to break away. In these societies, girls are objectified and have their power taken away, which creates a struggle between the sexes. A power struggle can also be proved when characters try to defy authority. When characters defy authority, there are often consequences. An example of this is when Sunny shows defiance in Ponies. Sunny spins and runs.... but there are more of the others and they are bigger, and Sunny doesn t have her wings to fly or her horn to fight. They pull her down before she can jump the fence into the woods beyond. Sunny cries, and there is nothing, only the sound if pounding hooves from the tight circle. (Kij Johnson, p.3). Most of the work that Gordon studied and with the publication date from this book, we can also say that collective memory is not a whole. Most of the soldiers are dead at this time and she had to rely on works that were published years later after the First War. Gordon quoted Winter in the first few chapters of her book, he stated: This sense of the socially constructed nature of collective memory is vital to historical study, since it precludes talking about memory as if it exists independently of the people who share it (2). From what I understand from the few pages that we had to read and with my research done with the whole book, the collective memory is based on the present memory, but since the soldiers they rely on are no longer in a group or in the same place, it is mostly a memory from one person. Another thing she said that made me realize how true her statement was with the novel that we studied during this term. She stated that: many of the narratives this volume examines rehabilitate the figure of the father and/or conception of productive masculinity; many follow in the tradition of early twentieth century home front novels by women to consider the value of female work, in wartime and beyond [...] and most conclude with a look to the future (which is now the present) and a sense of promise that is decidedly free from irony.
