WHAT IS PEER
COUNSELING?
GERALD V. MALATE
Peer Counseling was introduced in
the Philippines in 1977
 In 1972, the martial law regime, young
people believe that power emanates from:
 Money, Fame, and Dominance – The Martial
Law Values
The counselor can look at the client’s
experience like the memory bank of a
computer.
Input: Experience >Pleasant/Unpleasant
Process:
sorted
 coded
 classified
 filed
Unpleasant experience may cause a 90% jam
on the process which result to blocking.
Unpleasant
experience
 Pain
 Unhappy feelings
 hurt
 trauma
 Etc.
FRUSTRATION
PEER COUNSELING IS NOT ADVISING!!!!
In peer counseling, the counseling of
the person will depend upon how you
have treated the “blocks” because
blocks can cause irrational behavior.
Counseling process enables the person
to sort out unpleasant experiences and
erase “blocks”.
COUNSELING = LISTENING
When a client talks, client listens to
herself/himself.
When listening to oneself, one gets insight
within one’s self.
Equivalent to intuiting- talking to
yourself.
Peer Counselors
listens with delight
responds but lets the counselee
decide
do not interrupt or make “sabat”
but instead let the client talk
continuously because the
counselee is actually taking to
herself, not to the counselor.
Other things to remember in
counseling:
don’t interrupt
Probe (investigate)
don’t console (contain)
observe confidentiality
ADVICE may be good
for the counselor
but not necessarily
good for the
counselee.
The counselor must not
dwell on:
anger
grief
emotions

WHAT IS PEER COUNSELING PROGRAM?
THE PEER COUNSELING PROGRAM is:
 dedicated to assisting students throughout their important
years of college by establishing one-on-one peer-mentoring
relationships between students.
 built on the belief that the regular availability of a trained
upper-class student to listen and offer counseling and
guidance will greatly assist any student in meeting the
demands of college life.
 Realizing that a student’s college experience involves much
more than the classroom and that academic achievement
can be influenced for both good and bad by how a student
balances the myriad components of college life, peer
counselors are prepared to provide counseling and assistance
on a variety of issues that might affect a first-year student.
WHO ARE THE PEER COUNSELORS?
PEER COUNSELORS are:
 upper-class students who volunteer because of
their desire to assist their peers/co-students.
 selected based on strong interpersonal skills,
solid academic performance, and thorough
knowledge of how to function as a college
student.
 leaders in other campus organizations. After
being selected, Peer Counselors participate in
a comprehensive training program.
PEER COUNSELORS ASSIST STUDENTS WITH:
 The important balance between academic and social
life.
 Resources available at CSPC, both academically and
socially.
 Roommate interactions and dormitory life.
 Homesickness.
 Any and all aspects of college life relating to academic
success.
 Campus policies and procedures.
 Cultural adaptation for international students or those
from across the country.
BENEFITS TO A PEER COUNSELOR:
The Peer Career Counselor will gain experience in:
 communication, counseling, and instruction while
enhancing leadership and presentation skills.
 Peer Career Counselors not only gain the ability to
assist others with career issues, but also gain
knowledge about the job market and career related
topics that will aid in their own career decision-making
and job search.
 Valuable experience will be gained by working in a
professional environment and having a professional
staff mentor.
“A person is of
more value than
the whole world”
“A good friend is one that you can
sit at a park bench with,
say nothing to, and when you leave
you feel as if you have had the best
conversation of your life.”
