What Is Good Writing Essay
Crafting an essay on the subject of "What Is Good Writing" can be a challenging endeavor, as it
requires a nuanced understanding of language, communication, and subjective interpretation. The
difficulty lies in navigating the vast landscape of perspectives on what constitutes "good"
writing, considering the diverse audience, and incorporating relevant examples to support your
arguments.
Defining the parameters of good writing itself poses a formidable task. It involves delving into
the intricacies of style, grammar, structure, and creativity while acknowledging that these aspects
may vary across different genres and purposes. Balancing the technical aspects with the elusive
quality of eloquence adds another layer of complexity to the writing process.
Moreover, addressing the subjective nature of good writing adds an additional challenge. What
one person considers exemplary writing might not resonate with another. Thus, constructing an
essay on this topic demands a careful exploration of various viewpoints, incorporating
counterarguments, and presenting a well-reasoned stance.
Researching and gathering relevant information to support your assertions is a crucial step,
involving a thorough examination of literary theories, writing guides, and real-world examples.
Additionally, you must navigate the ever-evolving landscape of writing trends, considering the
impact of technology, cultural shifts, and evolving communication styles on contemporary
notions of good writing.
Expressing your thoughts in a clear, coherent, and engaging manner is essential. The essay itself
becomes a testament to the principles of good writing as you strive to communicate complex
ideas with precision and flair. Striking the right balance between academic rigor and accessibility
to a broader audience further complicates the task.
In conclusion, tackling the theme of "What Is Good Writing" in an essay necessitates a profound
understanding of the multifaceted nature of writing itself. It requires a delicate interplay of
technical proficiency, critical thinking, and the ability to engage readers. Despite its challenges,
the process can be intellectually rewarding, offering an opportunity to explore the dynamic and
ever-evolving world of written expression.

Personal Reflection on College Life:
Contrary, to what others have stated about online college classes, I found that there
are many advantages and disadvantages for those who choose to advance in their

me to make their own decisions on how to manage their college courses. Before I
made a decision to take college courses online I had to be sure I was up for the

The Importance Of Film And Film
The importance of film and the movies that collectively tell history is easily
overlooked during ones search for entertainment. Sometimes movies persuade the
viewer without them noticing, and then sometimes it s just obvious. During WWII,
the film industry was still young, however, they were growing quickly. Hollywood
was making an impression as soon as possible, and with the war just starting nearly
15 years after, Hollywood was able to expand onto that front. From persuading
viewers, to being labeled as propaganda , the filmindustry made an impact on World
War 2. It s hard to tell which films made an impact on history and give them proper
credit, however, M. Todd Bennett goes about his book by telling history through
media and film observations. One World, Big Screen is an analysis of movies,
actors, politicians, and the media in general during World War 2. i have dyslexia
Bennett goes about the book not just as a top 10 list for historical movies, but as a
collection of historical references regarding films imprint on World War 2. During

Hollywood during World War 2 was just being born. TV was made in the 1920 s,
but the film industry, however, was just being brought to light. Actors and actresses
were lining up for the next big show. Although the actors were reading a script for a
movie, they were also reading a script for advertising the directors thoughts or beliefs.

Delaware Aqueduct
CASE STUDIES
The two projects highlighted are the Delaware Aqueduct in upstate New York and the
Eisenhower Tunnel in Colorado. Both projects were an evolution in tunnel design
and methods used were from lessons learned on past tunneling ventures.
Both projects were a high priority at the time of construction and were primarily the
result of increasing demand for resources and mobility. The purpose of the Delaware
Aqueduct is to transport water from upstate New York to provide the water needs of
New York cityfor millions of people. The Eisenhower Tunnel was constructed as one
of the last parts of the interstate highway system which started growing in the 1950 s
under the Eisenhower administration.

years to keep its world class water system running.
Admitting to the holes
It has been 57 years since anybody got a decent peer inside the Delaware Aqueduct,
which begins toward one side of the Rondout Reservoir in Ulster County and runs 45
miles toward the West Branch Reservoir outside of Carmel, then turns south for the

the ultraviolet purification plant in Eastview, onto the Hillview Reservoir in Yonkers
and afterward into the tunnels that feed the city s mains.
Opened in 1944, the water gathers water from four repositories crosswise over
1,000 square miles and can convey up to 900 million gallons of water a day, yet, for
the most part, handles around 66% of that, all fueled by gravity on a course that

Eight Stages Of Genocide By Gregory Stanton
They had found what they were looking for, scientific proof that would justify a clear
distinction between East African people, a distinction that would claim the lives of
millions of innocent people. A separation that should ve been trivial and meaningless
instead lead to superiority complexes and an ever growing bitterness in the heart of
the Hutupeople. East Africa became a powder keg that finally exploded as Burundi
divulged into a civil war. Genocide happens under three circumstances, war,
decolonization, and national security; By using Gregory Stanton s Eight Stages of
Genocide it becomes very apparent to us that the Tutsis not only systematically
murdered the Hutu people but hid behind the cover of war to do it. Conflict in the...

It is because of Hutu aggression that caused the Tutsi to hit back harder and begin
their elimination of the Hutu people. America couldn t deal with Burundi because it
was still fighting in Vietnam, a war in which they were losing and one where the
American people wanted out. We couldn t direct resources to Africa because they
were need in Vietnam. Besides external conflict America was suffering internally as
the Watergate scandal began to come to light. The American people were fighting at
home against the government and overseas against communism, they didn t have the
time to deal with a small African country. Finally, other big players like China and
the USSR were unwilling to help Burundi because there was no real benefit to it.
Burundi had set itself up to become a capitalistic society so there was no real future
between them and large communist countries. The growing tension in Burundi
became overshadowed by more pressing matters and because of that Station s Eight
Stages of Genocide went by unnoticed, starting with classification.
Burundi s idea of classification was not new, it has been rooted in their history and
making its reappearance because of fear. Burundi s idea of us vs. them began with
colonization as Europeans had proven the Tutsi to be superior to the Hutu; the
scientists found what they had believed all along. Tutsi had a nobler , more naturally
aristocratic dimensions than the coarse and bestial Hutus.

Patrick Henry His Uses of Rhetorical Devices In Patrick Henry s Speech to the
Virginia Convention , Patrick Henry persuades colonists to fight Britain through
several rhetorical devices: Imagery, appeal to ethos, rhetorical questions and
metaphor. These rhetorical devices worked to help gain trust and to soften the
message. Patrick Henry wanted to approach them emotionally and question their
logic and morality. One of the most important rhetorical devices he used was
imagery. One example of imagery he used on his speech was We are apt to shut our
eyes against a painful truth which meant to tell them that they believe in a hope that

To make them react so they could take action on the problem that might ruin them
all if they don t act fast. To make them know if they were smart enough or were
capable of making the right decisions. Patrick Henry also wanted to make them
choose between liberty and slavery. It s logical to choose liberty because then you
are free to make your own decisions and live without reserve. There was a part of
his speech where Patrick Henry used sarcasm as part of his rhetorical question part
of his speech was And what have we to oppose them? Shall we try argument? The
explanation is that the Colonist don t really have anything to defend themselves
against the British but to fight them. Sarcastically, he asked them if they wanted to
try to argue with the British so they could make them reason. But, sincerely, talking
their problems out wasn t going to really work. Another example of a rhetorical
question was But when shall we be stronger? Will it be the next week or the next
year? Will it be when we are totally disarmed, and when a British guard shall be
stationed in every house? Shall we gather strength by irresolution and inaction? The
purpose of this was to ask every Colonists when will it be that they suggest they
should become stronger and stand up for themselves or if they were just going to wait
until they were totally defenseless and unprepared to actually start thinking what is it

Malaria Is A Parasite That Has Been Impacting The World...
Malaria is a parasite that has been impacting the world for the past couple of
centuries. The illness associated with malaria gives intense fevers, chills, terrible
headaches, muscle pains and can be deadly if not treated properly. Although
overall malaria cases have decreased from 262 million in 2000 to 214 million in
2015, it is still an issue to be concerned about today.1 There have been developments
of a vaccine against this parasite, but the parasite has adapted to the vaccine and
developed a resistance to it, thus rendering it ineffective. The p. falciparum and p.
vivax strains of malariais what is causing problems as these resistant strains have
popped up in much of Asia and Africa and a couple of countries in South America.1
This can potentially be a problem for the military and more specifically the Air Force
as multiple countries where the Air Force deploys are infected with these resistant
strains of malaria. It can be seen through the background and history of the fight
against this parasite that the chemistry behind an antimalarial vaccine is important to
the Air Force.
The illness associated with the malaria parasite was first thought to be a result of
poisonous mists drifting from marshes hence its name meaning bad air in Italian. Of
course it was unbeknownst back then that it was actually caused by the female
anopheles mosquito which tends to live near still water such as marshes.2 Although it
was unknown what actually caused the symptoms of malaria,
Teacher As A Teacher Essay
Teachers have been in existence for thousands of years, influencing the lives of
countless people. A teacher as a person who teaches and teaching as giving
systematic information to a person or about a subject or skill. Yet, these definitions
do not sufficiently explain the true role of a teacher. Clearly, a teacher provides
information and imparts knowledge to his or her students. A teacher, however, is
more than an instructor; a teacher is a motivator, a counsellor, and an ally.
Teacher may be the strongest motivating force in a student s life. If a teacher
successfully achieves student motivation, then he or she has met an essential teaching
goal. A good teacher is like a good coach always encouraging and always supportive.

Motivation in teaching comes from an innate need to better students lives; being a
teacher means to relentlessly strive to motivate students to succeed. As a motivator,
teachers also have an innate ability to guide students in education and career choices.
This is where teachers excel as counsellors. Many students will question their future;
through knowledge and experience, teachers guide students in the best direction to
success. Not all students will figure out what they want to do in life immediately;
therefore, teachers must continuously guide students throughout their years of
education. A teacher s ability to direct is a powerful tool.
With strong motivational and counselling skills, teachers become a powerful ally for
students experiencing difficulties. School can be a constant battle for students, many
of whom rely on teachers as supporters. Teachers who turns his or her back on a
struggling student is a deserter to the student and a failure to the teaching profession.
This does not mean a teacher must become a student s best friend; students often do
not want a friend from their teachers, but, rather, an ally. As an ally, teachers strive to
provide a positive and comfortable environment for students. In doing so, students
struggles with

Business Negotiations Advantages And Disadvantages
Business negotiations are deliberations that ensue from different motivating factors
and whose agenda have a common ground. Such a phenomenon brings the
conflicting sides together in the aim of seeking a lasting solution to the conflict.
Often the conflicts being resolved emanatefrom interests among the parties, which
happen to be coinciding. As such, one party feels less advantaged and seeks
reprieve. It is a common case nowadays and it features a series of across the table
discussions, which happen to be under the watch of the court system. Therefore, both
partners have the privilege of accessing the courts in case they feel there is a breach
of contact or patentfor that matter. The negotiations between apple and Samsung are a
perfect eоЂЂample of such a phenomenon. In this case, apple accuses Samsung of
breach of its patent rights. Apple claims that Samsung copied the look and feel of an
iphone, through their galaоЂЂy brand. !illing of the case was in #$$ when the
conflict began. The issue of business negotiations is a common phenomenon these
days especially on matters of patents and royalties. The desire to protect the uni%ue
characteristics of various products has become a fundamental element of business
negotiations nowadays. It is often argued that in order to hold enough leverage to
such a negotiation, one should commence the negotiations way before the two parties
even meet face to face on the table negotiations. Only that way, will a given party
ensure their

Rose For Emily Setting
In a Rose for Emily the setting is a very important part of the story, and is what
makes the story complete and unique in its own way. The setting is Faulkner s
fictitious post civil war; it takes place in a small town in the deep South of the
United States. Faulkner s is successful in giving the readers an understanding or
background knowledge of the beliefs of the characters and their town, and a part of
their background history. He is very informative on all these items. He makes
certain that we as readers are not confused at any point in the story or about a
character. Faulkner s setting also helps the reader understand the mentality and
actions of the town. The townspeople seem oddly fascinated with Miss Emily as a
relic of the past history of the town, they are in a way obsessed about her because
they want to know more about her than what she is saying. Who wouldn t find her
strange, and who wouldn t want to know more about her and why she did the things...

Miss Emily became crazy and insane after the death of her father and the horrible
death of her lover, Homer Barron. It is also revealed at the end of the story that she
went to the extent of poisoning Homer, so people thought, they never did actually

poison to kill rats . The negro delivery boy brought her the package; the pharmacist
didn t come back. When she opened the package at home it was written on the box,
under the skull and bones: For Rats . (p520) The pharmacist didn t want to get in
trouble for selling poison for any other reason other than for rats, so he made notice
that she knows what he had told people, and that he didn t sell it to her to kill
anyone. Miss Emily never answered him when he had asked what it was for, she just

The Consequences Of Elder Abuse
Psychiatrists are obliged to report when elder abuse is suspected or identified.
Failure to report is a lapse not only in ethical obligations but also has legal
implications (1). APS is the single, dedicated, authorized victim services system for
elder abuse. It exists in every community in the U.S, operating under state laws.
APS receive reports of elder abuse, neglect and exploitation of older people, and in
most states, of younger adults with severe disabilities (3). Although older adults tend
be frequent visitors to the doctor office, physicians rarely report suspected abuse,
because bruising is common in elderly, but the Adult protective services workers

I was speaking with a good friend of mine recently and she is going through the
process of making a few changes (moving, looking into a new career, improving her

the process is much more difficult than it ought to be. It seems as though things come

disappointment, and frustration for the same things.
She s not the only one in my network who feels this way. I ve heard the same thing

A Woman Who Went To Alaska Essay
In the late 1800 s tens and tens of thousands of people joined what was called the
Gold Rush. They risked their lives and many died along the way in the horrendous
and treacherous conditions. In the pieces of text including, The Klondike Gold
Rush , A Woman Who Went to Alaska and the narrator of City of Gold, they are
discussing the same topic but are using different viewpoints or perspectives. They
share the same topic but have different attitudes of that time in history. One is
about a person whose family member was part of it. A different one is just a
descriptive and describes the Gold Rush and finally the last one is a perspective
on how they had it hard and the oppressive effects associated with it. In the
passage, A Woman Who Went to Alaska , it has a very different perspective from
the other passage and video. This piece of text focuses on the corrupt government
in that time. The author uses many examples such as, A person wishing to prospect
for gold must procure a miner s license, paying 10 dollars for it and If anything
discovered, he must make a claim, men are sent to examine it...the officials seize it.
These examples are just of the few of the crooked and corrupt ways the officials and

This video s narrator takes the place of a miners son. Unlike all the other pieces of
text, this makes it more of a personal story. While watching this, the author makes it
feel more emotional than all of them. In the video, the narrator shows the treacherous
climb up the mountain. He shows a very strong emotional connection between the
hardships and struggles associated with being a miner. The other pieces of text are
more cause and effect, whereas this video is more descriptive. Also, it is much
different to actually see the actual footage than just read the

Hayman s Courage In The Book Of Esther
In a land where Jews are oppressed, a weak willed king lusts for a new respectable
wife.
Although being disliked the Jews showed extreme courage in the face of danger
throughout the book of Esther. Conversely, the family of Hayman attempted to
weaken this courage and ironically was cursed to fall in their own traps and schemes.
Moreover, the royalty exhibited hypocrisy when it involved taking responsibility.
Courage was overflowing flowing with the Jews, and irony in their enemies, while
the higher ups were hypocrites. Though constantly being oppressed Mordecai and
his family showed bravery. For example, Mordecai refused to bow down to
Hayman. This was important since Hayman being second in charge could have
and actually tried to have Mordecai killed. But even in the face of danger Mordecai
trusted in the lord and stood against his enemies regardless of the consequences.
Heroics must have ran into the family. Esther also displayed valor, when it came to
going before the king unannounced. This was a risky move, if the king did not
acknowledge Esther; she would be killed on the spot. Ignoring imminent danger
Esther went before the king and not only was acknowledged, but saved her people in
the process. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

My Halo Research Paper
The Background During the summer before my junior year in high school I broke
my neck while on vacation in Outer Banks, NC. I spent the next three months in a
cervical halo and three more months after that in a standard C collar neck brace.
My first month back at school was spent in the halo which was interesting because
not many people had ever seen one of these braces and did not know the full extent
of the hardware. It is a large plastic vest with sheep wool lining the inside; making
attending a school with predominantly outdoor hallways in the August heat a very
sweaty endeavor. From the vest shot four bars, two in front and two in back, that
held a horseshoe shaped bar (the halo) containing 4 screws. At the end of each
screw was a fine point that anchored into my skull and stabilized my head/neck. I
could not take the halo off and had to bathe, sleep, eat and everything else while
wearing the device. Obviously wearing the halo limited my choices of fashion and I
resorted to wearing a tank top that I would slip on starting with my feet because it
was the most breathable option. It also looked weird if I wore any other shirt. The
Incident Normally this would... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Not surprisingly; most people thought I could remove the device or that the screws
were just suction cups holding my head in place. My principal was one of these
people. This miscommunication directly affected her positive face. During the
conversation my mother was very accommodating and said if she required it, that I
would dress according to dress code though it was difficult to dress that way. When
my mom explained the situation to her she responded similar to when she was with
me. She suppressed the conflict issues by ignoring that she didn t know what exactly
was going on so she could continue the conflict without the embarrassment of being
ISIS Attack In The United States
The Islamic State of Iraq and al Sham, commonly known as ISIS, has frightened
the whole world by committing attacks in the Middle East, Paris, and San
Bernardino, California. ISIS claims to be the legitimate ruler of all Muslims and it
operates the Muslim world. ISIS was able to expand as the result of local groups
conflicts with Western interests. Daniel Byman declares that local groups are
attracted to ISIS for genuine conviction. Particularly, young men believe that ISIS is
the defender and avenger of Sunnis worldwide. On the other hand, some groups join
ISIS for accessibility to financial and technical aid. While , ISIS grows beyond Iraq
and Syria, religious intolerance is created. The group delivers its religious beliefs by
barbarian acts, such as beheading and rape to intimidate their enemies and obtain

In addition, Byman stated that the United States and its allies should target
provincial command and control centers and locals who have personal
relationships with top ISIS leaders in Iraq and Syria to weak the terrorist group. As
ISIS spreads in the Middle East can be more difficult to fight, but with use of strong
war tactics, the United States and its allies can seek victory. The United States can
use effective strategies , such as targeting ISIS affiliates provinces and local
grievances in the news and on social media. Eventually, the integration of ISIS s
provinces in the Unites States strategies against it will cause serious
Bartleby The Scrivener Narrator
Who is the narrator in Bartleby the Scrivener ? What is he like? The narrator in
Bartleby the Scrivener is committed, he just wants to get the job done, he is
understanding, and very compassionate. The narrator believes that he will figure
everything out and he never gets angry at Bartleby. He cares about all of his
employees and wants them to be safe and happy. The narrator does whatever is best
for him and his work so that everything gets done efficiently. There are many
examples in the story that show how the narrator of the story is very committed. The
narrator figures out ways to make his employees work most efficiently and is always
trying to get things done. The story tells us about how Turkey comes back from lunch

Even in times where his employees are causing him a lot of anguish he always
understands and never gets too angry. When the narrator first asks Bartleby to do a
task and Bartleby says I would prefer not to. (Melville 306), the narrator does not
get very angry, he questions Bartleby but then proceeds to sit back down and go on
with his day. Most people with employees would get very angry at them and scold
them but instead the narrator just sits back down and thinks about it and assumes
that Bartleby did not have bad intentions. The narrator states I should have
violently dismissed him from the premises. But as it was, I should have as soon
thought of turning my pale plaster of paris bust of Cicero out of doors. I stood
gazing at him awhile, as he went on with his own writing, and then reseated myself
at my desk. (Melville 307). It is also shown in the story that he is understanding
when he fires Bartleby yet he comes back to his office to find Bartleby still inside
and he does not make any rash decisions and refuses to treat Bartleby with any
disrespect, however the narrator did not want Bartleby to be living under his roof
for free. The narrator thinks to himself Turn the man out by an actual thrusting I

Reflection Of The Movie Remember The Titans
The movie I selected was Remember The Titans (2000). The movie was about
leadership, teamwork, and overcoming obstacles. Remember The Titans took place
in Alexandria, Virginia Where one high school became integrated with blacks and
whites forming T.C. Williams High school. The football team at the school for the
first time had blacks and whites doing the same sport together. The school board
fired Coach Yoast from being head coach and hired a new head coach named
Coach Boone who was African American. This led to problems with white families
since they did not want a black coaching their kids and it caused problems for
Coach Boone. However, after an incident with the white football players Coach
Boone compromised with Coach Yoast allowing him to be the defensive
coordinator in hopes of creating some peace in the tense time. As the summer
came to an end football camp began. At football camp the audiences experiences
the problems the black football players had with chemistry because of racism and
hatred from their white teammates. However in the end of camp the team became
brothers and does not see a person by their skin but what s on the inside. The boys
were ready for football yet when they started school the Titans had to face the
hardships of school and realize not everyone at school was as optimistic as they
were which lead to more turmoil inside the team due to racism. Thankfully as time
went on their bond grew and the team went on to become undefeated as well as win
the state championship. The main characters in Remember The Titans were Coach
Boone, Coach Yoast, Gerry Bertier, and Julius Campbell. Coach Boone was the head
coach for the Titans, Coach Yoast was the ex head coach and was the defensive
coordinator for the Titans, Gerry Bertier was the All American on the team and was
the main white football player throughout the movie, and Julius Campbell was the
main black football player on the Titans. All of these characters showed leadership
throughout the movie. Coach Boone showed his leadership by forcing others to do
what he wants no matter the cost. Multiple times throughout the movie the audience
watches Coach Boone ordering players to run, redo a play, burpees and other
commands. Coach
Criticisms Of The Distributive Model In Social Justice

Criticisms of the Distributive Model in Social Justice Iris Marion Young takes on a
strong position surrounding the notion of a distributive model within the realm of
social justice in Justice and The Politics of Difference. She does not believe the
distributive model truly encompasses the issues within social justice, but rather limits
social justice to the fair and just distribution of advantage and strain amongst the
members of society. The distributive model fails to acknowledge the process that
limits the distribution of human rights to society s members, thus lacking the means
to evoke change. Young takes on a position that focuses on the process of
domination and oppression within society and how that should be the primary focus
when trying to understand social justice. The distributive paradigm or model that
Young refers to in her book defines social justice as the morally proper distribution
of benefits and burdens among society s members (Young 16). In that regard, social
justice is being viewed as the distribution of material goods, resources, and other
means of economic advancement. Social justice is much broader and goes far deeper
than simply defining who gets what. While the distribution of resources, wealth, and
material goods is an important factor when thinking about social justice, it should not
be the center of discussion. The distribution of such things comes first from the
initiation of a social system that defined who was worthy of receiving resources in
life. To think that social justice is solely about the distribution of wealthy possessions,
ignores the fact that there are social structures that have been put into place in order
to control the distribution. In a sense, the distributive model only acknowledges the
effects of the issue and not the cause. By only focusing on the distribution of wealth,
resources, income, and jobs in society, the distributive model leaves out the way
social constructions of race and class have allocated the distribution of such
possessions. There are institutions within society that are controlling the distribution
of various material things in society, and have been put in
Men vs. Women in Professional Sports
Men Vs. Women in Professional Sports Ever since the ancient Greece, men have held
athletic competitions or sports. It is only in modern times that women have had an
opportunity to compete. Most sports still don t have men and women directly
competing against one another. In the past athletic instructors adapted the rules to
make sports less physically taxing for women. For instance in basketball, to ensure
that girls maintain proper decorum, they were forbidden from snatching the ball and
dribbling it more than three times in row. Females would not be considered strong
enough to play a full court basketball game until 1971. Women have struggled to be
taken seriously as athletes for more than two centuries. Over the years, females have

women s soccer team say they are relying on future generations to keep their team
supplied with talent. To take advantage of its time in the spotlight, the team
launched a twelve city tour against a team of world all stars in the months
following its win. They wanted to demonstrate to the USSF (United States Soccer

financially viable. Players say a league is needed to maintain the growth of women

were a professional woman s football and soccer leagues launched. The football
league had to close after only a few weeks due to lack of fan support and
sponsorships as well as not having a television contract. The soccer league has faired
somewhat better due to the huge national media attention the United States Women s
soccer team received after winning the World Cup of Soccer in 1999. They however
also suffer from little fan support and no television contract. Men have fared much

Reasons for the Gap between Social Classes in America
USA is a very big country with a lot of people and the social classes are very
important. We can see that social class plays big part of people s life. Everyday
people are working, studying, trying to be better. Even though right now it s time
when everyone has many opportunities in his life, anyway there is a gap between
classes and groups of people with same features. And your background probably
will build your future. And we need to find what kind of class we have right now
and look into these classes. The main idea is that Social Classesstill exist and it s
most general part of U.S.A society. There are three reasons why gap between
groups still exist. The first reason is that everyone has different economic status.
People divide by groups with same ideas, religion, economic status, political views,
and cultural features. For example in U.S.A we have poor people, very rich
people, and kind of middle people and we can t say that these families are same.
People from each group have different opportunities in education, medicine, and
job. If you are from rich family you have more chance to be succeed in this world,
for you it will be much easier unlike someone from poor family. The children from
rich families will get best college or university degree, will find good job, and will
learn how to be rich from their parents. Money for now is very powerful tool in your
hand, with money we can go to our dreams. The statistic shows us that most of

Indonesia s Youth Smoking Epidemic
Introduction
Cigarette consumption is heavily prevalent in Indonesian society and culture.
Indonesia ranks as the fifth largest market for tobacco in the world and remains as the
only member of the Southeast Asian nations who has not ratified the World Health
Organization Framework Convention on TobaccoControl (FCTC). Unfortunately,
this has led to a high tobacco prevalence among Indonesian youth. Data from the
Indonesia Global Youth Tobacco Survey 2014 reported that one in five students were
tobacco users. (World Health Organization) Many begin smokinghabits at a young
age and later suffer from tobacco addiction. The impact on youth is drastic upon their
health and socioeconomic status.
Prevalence
Indonesia is noted to be the fifth largest consumer of cigarettes in the world,
consuming 21.5 billion cigarettes annually. Approximately 34.5% adults
Indonesians are tobacco users. (Aditama) Majority of smokers begin smoking daily
between ages 15 19. Among Indonesians aged 13 15 years old, 41% of boys and
3.5% girls were daily cigarette smokers with the consumption of 10 12 cigarettes
daily. (Susilowati) Gender, education and environment are contributing factors to
cigarette smoking. Smoking prevalence is low among girls due to cultural views on
female and cigarette habits. Female smokers are viewed as socially inappropriate and
are associated with negative connotations such as impolite and ill mannered. The
prevalence of

they also play a very important role as facilitator and collaborator. However, in
practices, they were not adequately prepared to assist patients to engage in clinical
treatment because of external barriers, including heavy workload, time constraints
and hospital special setting et al. Consistent with previous researches, communication

In our study, TB inpatients committed that keep cooperation with health providers in
hospital settings may help to making them feel cared and promote patient

I am proud to say that I live in America, the land of opportunity. I am proud to live
in one of the richest countries in the world. I guess you could say that I am a proud
American. What other government has a national budget of $2 trillion? People say
money can t buy happiness, but I disagree. The reason people say money doesn?t buy
happiness is because they are spending it on the wrong things. Of the $2 trillion at the
government?s disposal, $355.4 billion is spent on the military every year. I know that
our President must fight terrorism and wants to spend billions of dollars in order to
keep American citizens safe; however I don?t think that spending almost a billion

Which means that these sources are paying around $658.8 billion dollars a year and
the federal government contributes the other 10% (www.ed.gov). This includes
expenditures not only from the Department of Education, but also from other federal
agencies, including the Department of Health and Human Services Head Start
program, which is a comprehensive child development program that serves children
from birth to age 5, pregnant women, and their families. They are child focused
programs and have the overall goal of increasing the school readiness of young
children in low income families (http://www2.acf.dhhs.gov/programs/hsb), and the
Department of Agriculture s School Lunch Program which provides nutritionally
balanced, low cost or free lunches to more than 25 million students each school day
(http://www.fns.usda.gov/cnd/Lunch/ default.htm). When these are subtracted, the
Department of Education is left with 6% of the total education spending. Which in
turn is $55.8 billion dollars and 2.7% of the federal government s budget of $2
trillion. Despite this large amount of money spent on the American education system,
it is still not a reflection its quality.
Perhaps if the government were to trim the fat on their national defense budget which
will reach $451 billion by 2007, there might be hope for the education system in our
country. Instead of spending

To what extent can preparedness and planning mitigate the effects of tropical

hurricanes, tropical cyclones, typhoons and willy willies. These intense low pressure
weather systems are associated with catastrophic wind speeds averaging at 120kmph
and torrential rainfall. Tropical revolving storms are huge and extremely violent
extending to about 500km in diameter. They occur in the tropics and the sub tropics

Structural approaches may also be necessary to protect coastal areas. Preparedness
includes the education of populations. People need to know the dangers and what
they can do to avoid them. In Florida, evacuation routes have been prepared and
cyclone shelters are clearly signed and posted. Planning includes land use planning.
This regulation is used to reduce the vulnerability of people and property so for
example, only low value land uses (recreational) can occupy coastal strips, the areas
most vulnerable to a storm. In Northeast Florida, coastal properties have been rallied
above the ground on stilts and have non residential functions on the ground (storage).
This means that hazards like the storm surges do not impact the people and less
damage occurs to infrastructure. Warning systems put in place to predict incoming
storms inform the public about them. This is linked with the effectiveness of the
government and how developed the country is. A less developed country is less
likely to have the money to be able to afford such technology and equipment meaning
that no matter what form of planning or preparedness occurs, mitigation is less likely
to be achieved. More developed countries have the money to install advanced
technology and equipment to ensure that their population can be warned meaning
that lives can be saved. In late August 2005, Hurricane Katrina swept onto the coast
of Louisiana with winds of over 160km per

Thoreau And Civil Disobedience
3. How does Thoreau justify the moral need for civil disobedience? What principles
does her rely on in his justification?
Thoreau justifies the moral need for civil disobedience when the acts and actions
of a government oppose the person s conscience. More specifically, he uses the
example of the Mexican American Revolution to describe this idea. He claims that
people go to war even though they may be against the morals involved in the war,
including slavery, and how even people who oppose slavery are fighting for its
establishment in Texas. He also justifies the need for civil disobedience by saying that
for change to take place, people have to act upon it, not only cast votes or support it
weakly. He argues that Even voting for the right is doing nothing for it , and that in
even minorities can influence change by stating that a minority: is irresistible when it
clogs by its whole weight .
7. Would you describe Thoreau as optimistic or pessimistic about people s ability to
improve the world? Explain. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is because he believes that even minorities can influence improvements when
he says that even a minority: is irresistible when it clogs by its whole weight , but
also believes that people: hesitate and [they] regret, and sometimes [they] petition .
In addition, Thoreau also argues that the votes and petitions people merely are
voting for the right and doing nothing for it , and further argues this by stating that
the masses of men have little virtue and that: When the majority shall at length vote
for the abolition of slavery, it will be because they are indifferent to slavery, or
because there is but little slavery left to be abolished by their vote. Moreover, he
discusses about how there are many people that oppose slavery and the Mexican
American War but do not do anything about
Review Of The Movie Stranger
Comedy is a way of using jokes, dialogue, or actions to make an audience laugh.
The movie Stranger Than Fiction uses comedy constantly during the course of the
movie. The movie is about a man named Harold Crick that is living an ordinary life
as an IRS Auditor. He begins to hear a narrator narrate his entire life and his future.
He then goes crazy and gets assigned to audit a baker. The baker, Ana Pascal, starts
to hate Harold because of his job but soon falls in love with him throughout this
funny and sort of romantic movie. Harold finds out he is going to die by the
narrator in the second half of the movie and starts to panic. He wants answers on
how he s going to die and when he is going to die. This movie may sound like a
serious romantic movie by reading the summary but, it s actually mainly known as a
Comedy. There are many types of comedy used throughout this movie but, the types
that were used the most in Stranger Than Fiction was Observational Comedy,
Situational Comedy, and Tragicomedy. In the beginning of the movie director,
Marc Forster, uses Observational Comedy to make fun of Harold s life.
Throughout the first ten minutes of the movie the narrator is telling the audience
about Harold s boring dead end life. The narrator begins to talk about how boring
his job is, how weirdly organized he is, and how lonely he is. This comedy makes
fun of how Harold lives his simple life and how he might have no future. Soon he
begins to hear this narrator and starts to panic.
Essay on A Short History of the Basque Country
A Short History of the Basque Country
Archaeological and ethnographic findings indicate that Basque [people] evolved
from Cro Magnon [...] in this area over a period dating from about 40,000 years ago
until distinct features were acquired approximately 7,000 years ago. Two thousand
years later the sheep, not native to these lands, was introduced and horse and cattle
farming came into being, as shown by Adolf Staffe. These circumstances made it
necessary for the people to travel periodically and cultural contacts were thus made.
This period in the history of the Basque people can only make sense if it is studied in
conjunction with the cultures of the surrounding areas, in the basin of the River ...

P. Villasante says that the Basques, in calling themselves Euskaldunak (those who
speak Basque [Euskera]) and the country Euskalerria , i.e. Basque speaking country,
are making cultural history in that it is the language that has moulded and given the
Basque people a sense of unity, a sense of being a nation. Antonio Tovar comfirms this
and explains the situation by saying that the Basques did not take part in the battles
between Carthaginians and Romans; Silius Italicus refers to the fact that there were
Basque soldiers in Hannibal s armies. The Basque only intervened to defend
Sertorius, the Roman general who had shown respect for them. The relationship
between Romans and Basques was cordial: Pompey founded Pompaelo, Pamplona, in
the settlement that was Iruna (the city in Basque). Roman influence further north was
less evident, however. This meant that the Basque language survived in its entirety,
with its multiple influences.
In the third and fifth centuries the Basques defended themselves against the
Barbarians who came south to the Iberian Peninsula. After fighting the Germanic
Swabian tribes, they went into battle against the Visigoths. The latter gained several
victories over the Basques and founded Victoriacum in the year 581 in the proximity
of present day Victoria, which was in turn founded by Sancho the Wise on the site of

The Underground Railroad And The American Civil War
In 1619, the first Africans arrived in Jamestown, Virginia setting in motion one of
the darkest eras in American history. Slavery would continue throughout the 17th
and 18th centuries and eventually divide the nation in the bloody battles of the
American Civil War (1861 1865). On January 1, 1863, four million slaves were
freed when President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.
However, the road to freedom for many slaves was long and brutal. Countless
African American slaves were tortured and terrorized and many lost their lives. In
the early 1800s, a secret network of routes and safe houses was established to help
fugitive slaves reach freedom. This system became known as the Underground
Railroad and spanned across twenty nine states. Routes also led to Canada,
Mexico, and the Caribbean. Historians believe the origins of the Underground
Railroad can be traced back to the Quakers (Penrice). Without the courageous
efforts of the dedicated Quaker men and women, the Underground Railroad would
not have been successful in leading an estimated 100,000 slaves to freedom ( Myths
of the Underground Railroad ). When British Colonial America was first colonized,
a lack of labor to work the land became a dilemma. Indentured servants from Europe
were initially used but as the agricultural economy grew, so did the demand for cheap
labor. The problem was resolved with the introduction of African slaves. With the
completion of the American built ship,

В·Carson Fulmer The White Sox have three strong prospects for their future. They
are going to play out the string in 2017 looking at which of these pitchers steps

Much of his minor league difficulties have centered on control issues. Too many
free passes have lead to a balloon in his ERA. At times, he has used his mid 90s
fastball to mow down hitters, while at other times he can t seem to locate with
consistency. Fulmer had tossed 6 innings with only three Ks out of the bullpen
since his call up, but nailed 9 San Francisco hitters in his first start. He has his
future in front of him, and his 3 hit, 1 run performance in his first start turned the
heads of the White Sox brass. Look for Fulmer to pitch his final opportunities with
a sense of purpose. В·Lucas Giolito Giolito s fantasy numbers in his first four starts
have accounted for two masterful performances, sandwiched in the middle of two
defensive collapses by his fielders. He allowed 1 earned run, scattering only a half

those two wins. In his other two starts, the White Sox defense fell apart. It led to a
momentary loss of concentration against San Francisco, leading to 4 walks. Giolito
still gave up only three hits in 5 plus innings of work, so the potential is obviously

Lane laughs and responds by saying, she told me, I would rather you were dead.
But Lane s mother later on, came to except the idea that her son was gay. After a
while, Lane states that he got married the day before the interview, Behar
congratulates him and she appears happy, supportive and enthusiastic about the
news Lane has shared. Behar repeatedly looked at her Apple Watch, Lane noticed
and confronted her and implied that was more important than his interview, for
Behar to get distracted. Behar laughs and replies by implying that she got a
notification and changes the subject. They continue the rest of the interview; with
Lane sharing his personal experience with people he had acquaintances with and
worked with in his work. Furthermore, Nathan discusses his book Naughty Mable,
he shares how it is a book about his dog Mable , the book discusses Mabel s
characteristics and life. (Lane 40:00 42:00) The way Joy Behar was interviewing
Nathan Lane, appears to be supportive about homosexuality, but she never states her

Auggie Pullman Character Traits
Introduction I admire August/Auggie Pullman from the book Wonder, who has
won the genetic lottery which made war on his face. He has a great amount of
strength. Though Auggie is very self conscience, but his other qualities help him
overcome school issues. August also is a hilarious boy, which is a very good
quality in a person. I respect Auggie because of his great qualities. August Pullman
s Strength Auggie Pullman has some of the greatest strength I have ever seen
/read. To quote the book Wonder, Ever since I was little, the doctors told my
parents that someday I d need hearing aids. and Do I really have to wear this,
Mom? I said, trying not to cry. I hate them. They don t make any difference! This
helps show strength from Auggie because he does not want to wear these hearing
aids, worried that people would notice, and judge him, more than they already do,
but he wears them anyway. To add on, quoting Wonder, I don t know if there s a
word that means the same as brightly in terms of hearing, but I wish I knew I one,
because my ears were hearing brightly now. When the ear doctor turned on the
hearing aids for Auggie, he no longer didn t want to wear them and worry about
others, he loved... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As reported by Wonder, Like the other day I saw Maya writing a note to Ellie on a
piece of Uglydoll stationary, and I don t know why, but I just randomly blurted
said: Did you know that the guy who created the Uglydolls based them on me?
This alone proves that Auggie makes jokes, and once Maya saw that Auggie was
okay of joking about his face, she laughed very hard. Actually, technically speaking,
her full name is Darth Daisy, but we never really called her that. and Darth Daisy!
That s funny! Darth Daisy! Furthermore, this is also an example of Auggie making a
joke where another person responds with laughter. Ultimately, Auggie s sense of
humor is one of the
Imagination; a Human s Special Sence Essay

Imagination: A Human s Special Sense
Human beings have the ability to create their own individual worlds through
imagination. However, the imagination is limited because of the constant use of
technology and the reliance on vision. The technological culture has separated
humans from the actual world and their senses; much like vision has done. In the
essay The Eyes of the Skin: Architecture and the Senses , Juhani Pallasmaa focuses
on the exploration of the senses and how they interact with one another. We also see
his discussion on how vision can affect the human experience. The more visually
capable we are, the more we begin to lose our sense of imagination. Similarly in the

We see that our imagination comes into play when our vision is obscured. Without
the sense of vision, our other senses quickly assume richness and power. This occurs
to blind people such as Hull, who at the age of forty eight became completely blind.
Sacks states that Hull speaks of how the sound of the rain, never before accorded
much attention, can now delineate a whole landscape for him...it throws a coloured
blanket over previously invisible things (304). In other words, we see that Sacks
is showing us how strong Hull s imagination was after becoming blind. Just
because Hull became blind, it did not mean that Hull s life was over. On the other
hand, it was a new beginning for Hull. He was able to make use of his other senses
and see how important they are. With Hull s imagination also came a sense of
intimacy with his surroundings. He felt as though with his strong visual imagery, he
had a strong sense of closeness, which evolves from imagining. The term delineate
has a significant meaning in Sack s text because imagination is what led Hull to be
able to portray the images precisely in his mind. Similarly, Pallasmaa states, anyone
who has half woken up to the sound of a train or an ambulance in a nocturnal city,
and though his/her sleep experienced the space of the city with its countless
inhabitants scattered within its structures, knows the
Theories Of Gender Performativity
Gender performativity was defined in lecture by Dr. Thomas O Neill as the act of
being either male or female each day (September 21st, 2017). In this essay, I will
first be discussing what is meant by gender performativity, followed by an illustration
on how it differs from gender socialization and interpretive reproduction two other
theories of genderidentity formation. Patricia Adler (1992) as cited by O Neill in
lecture, explains that gender socialization theoryemphasizes how children, through
socialization, try and adopt gendered characteristics to develop their own identity
(September 21st, 2017). Interpretive reproduction on the other hand, was a concept
established by William Corsaro and explained by O Neill in lecture as, the... Show

This statement suggests that if you were to disregard the scripts that are assigned to
each gender, something different might come to be. In summary, the theory of
gender performativity highlights that gender performance is habitually and
continually acted and performed on a daily basis in everyday life and gender does
not have to be depicted by the set regulations of society.
A gender identity formation theory that exhibits a completely different way of
thinking is gender socialization theory. Karen Wells (2015), explains that gender
socialization theories originated from general theories of socialization which
suggest that children learn how to be functional members of society through daily
experiences and arising issues in addition to formal training. Wells (2015)
highlights that gender socialization focuses on socialization into appropriate roles
depicted by gender this varies drastically from the theory of gender performativity.
For example, gender socialization theory assumes that children learn what is
considered to be culturally appropriate for their gender by using others as role
models, imitating and eventually internalizing the role model s behaviours and
attitudes (Hill, 2002 citing Ickles, 1993 as cited by Wells, 2015). Patricia Adler
(1992) describes gender socialization as the internalization of idealized gender
images . As a result, this creates a socially constructed right and wrong for each

The narrator states I should have violently dismissed him from the premises. But as it was, I should have as soon thought of turning my pale plaster of paris bust of Cicero out of doors. • 24. Reflection Of The Movie Remember The Titans The movie I selected was Remember The Titans (2000). The movie was about leadership, teamwork, and overcoming obstacles. Remember The Titans took place in Alexandria, Virginia Where one high school became integrated with blacks and whites forming T.C. Williams High school. The football team at the school for the first time had blacks and whites doing the same sport together. The school board fired Coach Yoast from being head coach and hired a new head coach named Coach Boone who was African American. This led to problems with white families since they did not want a black coaching their kids and it caused problems for Coach Boone. However, after an incident with the white football players Coach Boone compromised with Coach Yoast allowing him to be the defensive coordinator in hopes of creating some peace in the tense time. As the summer came to an end football camp began. At football camp the audiences experiences the problems the black football players had with chemistry because of racism and hatred from their white teammates. However in the end of camp the team became brothers and does not see a person by their skin but what s on the inside. The boys were ready for football yet when they started school the Titans had to face the hardships of school and realize not everyone at school was as optimistic as they were which lead to more turmoil inside the team due to racism. Thankfully as time went on their bond grew and the team went on to become undefeated as well as win the state championship. The main characters in Remember The Titans were Coach Boone, Coach Yoast, Gerry Bertier, and Julius Campbell. Coach Boone was the head coach for the Titans, Coach Yoast was the ex head coach and was the defensive coordinator for the Titans, Gerry Bertier was the All American on the team and was the main white football player throughout the movie, and Julius Campbell was the main black football player on the Titans. All of these characters showed leadership throughout the movie. Coach Boone showed his leadership by forcing others to do what he wants no matter the cost. Multiple times throughout the movie the audience watches Coach Boone ordering players to run, redo a play, burpees and other commands. Coach
  • 25. Criticisms Of The Distributive Model In Social Justice Wadood, Jaleel AfroAm 188A Sem 3 Spring 2017 Professor Rogers May 26, 2017 Criticisms of the Distributive Model in Social Justice Iris Marion Young takes on a strong position surrounding the notion of a distributive model within the realm of social justice in Justice and The Politics of Difference. She does not believe the distributive model truly encompasses the issues within social justice, but rather limits social justice to the fair and just distribution of advantage and strain amongst the members of society. The distributive model fails to acknowledge the process that limits the distribution of human rights to society s members, thus lacking the means to evoke change. Young takes on a position that focuses on the process of domination and oppression within society and how that should be the primary focus when trying to understand social justice. The distributive paradigm or model that Young refers to in her book defines social justice as the morally proper distribution of benefits and burdens among society s members (Young 16). In that regard, social justice is being viewed as the distribution of material goods, resources, and other means of economic advancement. Social justice is much broader and goes far deeper than simply defining who gets what. While the distribution of resources, wealth, and material goods is an important factor when thinking about social justice, it should not be the center of discussion. The distribution of such things comes first from the initiation of a social system that defined who was worthy of receiving resources in life. To think that social justice is solely about the distribution of wealthy possessions, ignores the fact that there are social structures that have been put into place in order to control the distribution. In a sense, the distributive model only acknowledges the effects of the issue and not the cause. By only focusing on the distribution of wealth, resources, income, and jobs in society, the distributive model leaves out the way social constructions of race and class have allocated the distribution of such possessions. There are institutions within society that are controlling the distribution of various material things in society, and have been put in

We can see that social class plays big part of people s life. Everyday people are working, studying, trying to be better. Even though right now it s time when everyone has many opportunities in his life, anyway there is a gap between classes and groups of people with same features. And your background probably will build your future. And we need to find what kind of class we have right now and look into these classes. The main idea is that Social Classesstill exist and it s most general part of U.S.A society. There are three reasons why gap between groups still exist. The first reason is that everyone has different economic status. People divide by groups with same ideas, religion, economic status, political views, and cultural features. For example in U.S.A we have poor people, very rich people, and kind of middle people and we can t say that these families are same. People from each group have different opportunities in education, medicine, and job. If you are from rich family you have more chance to be succeed in this world, for you it will be much easier unlike someone from poor family. The children from rich families will get best college or university degree, will find good job, and will learn how to be rich from their parents. People say money can t buy happiness, but I disagree. The reason people say money doesn?t buy happiness is because they are spending it on the wrong things. Of the $2 trillion at the government?s disposal, $355.4 billion is spent on the military every year. This includes expenditures not only from the Department of Education, but also from other federal agencies, including the Department of Health and Human Services Head Start program, which is a comprehensive child development program that serves children from birth to age 5, pregnant women, and their families. They are child focused programs and have the overall goal of increasing the school readiness of young children in low income families (http://www2.acf.dhhs.gov/programs/hsb), and the Department of Agriculture s School Lunch Program which provides nutritionally balanced, low cost or free lunches to more than 25 million students each school day (http://www.fns.usda.gov/cnd/Lunch/ default.htm). When these are subtracted, the Department of Education is left with 6% of the total education spending. Which in turn is $55.8 billion dollars and 2.7% of the federal government s budget of $2 trillion. Despite this large amount of money spent on the American education system, it is still not a reflection its quality. Perhaps if the government were to trim the fat on their national defense budget which will reach $451 billion by 2007, there might be hope for the education system in our country. Instead of spending

Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Structural approaches may also be necessary to protect coastal areas. Preparedness includes the education of populations. People need to know the dangers and what they can do to avoid them. In Florida, evacuation routes have been prepared and cyclone shelters are clearly signed and posted. Planning includes land use planning. This regulation is used to reduce the vulnerability of people and property so for example, only low value land uses (recreational) can occupy coastal strips, the areas most vulnerable to a storm. In Northeast Florida, coastal properties have been rallied above the ground on stilts and have non residential functions on the ground (storage). This means that hazards like the storm surges do not impact the people and less damage occurs to infrastructure. Warning systems put in place to predict incoming storms inform the public about them. This is linked with the effectiveness of the government and how developed the country is. A less developed country is less likely to have the money to be able to afford such technology and equipment meaning that no matter what form of planning or preparedness occurs, mitigation is less likely to be achieved. More developed countries have the money to install advanced technology and equipment to ensure that their population can be warned meaning that lives can be saved. In late August 2005, Hurricane Katrina swept onto the coast of Louisiana with winds of over 160km per

Thoreau justifies the moral need for civil disobedience when the acts and actions of a government oppose the person s conscience. More specifically, he uses the example of the Mexican American Revolution to describe this idea. He claims that people go to war even though they may be against the morals involved in the war, including slavery, and how even people who oppose slavery are fighting for its establishment in Texas. He also justifies the need for civil disobedience by saying that for change to take place, people have to act upon it, not only cast votes or support it weakly. Two thousand years later the sheep, not native to these lands, was introduced and horse and cattle farming came into being, as shown by Adolf Staffe. Antonio Tovar comfirms this and explains the situation by saying that the Basques did not take part in the battles between Carthaginians and Romans; Silius Italicus refers to the fact that there were Basque soldiers in Hannibal s armies. The Basque only intervened to defend Sertorius, the Roman general who had shown respect for them. The relationship between Romans and Basques was cordial: Pompey founded Pompaelo, Pamplona, in the settlement that was Iruna (the city in Basque). Roman influence further north was less evident, however. This meant that the Basque language survived in its entirety, with its multiple influences. In the third and fifth centuries the Basques defended themselves against the Barbarians who came south to the Iberian Peninsula. After fighting the Germanic Swabian tribes, they went into battle against the Visigoths. The latter gained several victories over the Basques and founded Victoriacum in the year 581 in the proximity of present day Victoria, which was in turn founded by Sancho the Wise on the site of the ancient

Slavery would continue throughout the 17th and 18th centuries and eventually divide the nation in the bloody battles of the American Civil War (1861 1865). On January 1, 1863, four million slaves were freed when President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. However, the road to freedom for many slaves was long and brutal. Countless African American slaves were tortured and terrorized and many lost their lives. In the early 1800s, a secret network of routes and safe houses was established to help fugitive slaves reach freedom. This system became known as the Underground Railroad and spanned across twenty nine states. Routes also led to Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean. Historians believe the origins of the Underground Railroad can be traced back to the Quakers (Penrice). Without the courageous efforts of the dedicated Quaker men and women, the Underground Railroad would not have been successful in leading an estimated 100,000 slaves to freedom ( Myths of the Underground Railroad ). When British Colonial America was first colonized, a lack of labor to work the land became a dilemma. Indentured servants from Europe were initially used but as the agricultural economy grew, so did the demand for cheap labor. The problem was resolved with the introduction of African slaves. Sacks states that Hull speaks of how the sound of the rain, never before accorded much attention, can now delineate a whole landscape for him...it throws a coloured blanket over previously invisible things (304). In other words, we see that Sacks is showing us how strong Hull s imagination was after becoming blind. Just because Hull became blind, it did not mean that Hull s life was over. On the other hand, it was a new beginning for Hull. He was able to make use of his other senses and see how important they are. With Hull s imagination also came a sense of intimacy with his surroundings. He felt as though with his strong visual imagery, he had a strong sense of closeness, which evolves from imagining. The term delineate has a significant meaning in Sack s text because imagination is what led Hull to be able to portray the images precisely in his mind. Similarly, Pallasmaa states, anyone who has half woken up to the sound of a train or an ambulance in a nocturnal city, and though his/her sleep experienced the space of the city with its countless inhabitants scattered within its structures, knows the
  • 44. Theories Of Gender Performativity Gender performativity was defined in lecture by Dr. Thomas O Neill as the act of being either male or female each day (September 21st, 2017). In this essay, I will first be discussing what is meant by gender performativity, followed by an illustration on how it differs from gender socialization and interpretive reproduction two other theories of genderidentity formation. Patricia Adler (1992) as cited by O Neill in lecture, explains that gender socialization theoryemphasizes how children, through socialization, try and adopt gendered characteristics to develop their own identity (September 21st, 2017). Interpretive reproduction on the other hand, was a concept established by William Corsaro and explained by O Neill in lecture as, the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In summary, the theory of gender performativity highlights that gender performance is habitually and continually acted and performed on a daily basis in everyday life and gender does not have to be depicted by the set regulations of society. A gender identity formation theory that exhibits a completely different way of thinking is gender socialization theory. Karen Wells (2015), explains that gender socialization theories originated from general theories of socialization which suggest that children learn how to be functional members of society through daily experiences and arising issues in addition to formal training. Wells (2015) highlights that gender socialization focuses on socialization into appropriate roles depicted by gender this varies drastically from the theory of gender performativity. For example, gender socialization theory assumes that children learn what is considered to be culturally appropriate for their gender by using others as role models, imitating and eventually internalizing the role model s behaviours and attitudes (Hill, 2002 citing Ickles, 1993 as cited by Wells, 2015). Patricia Adler (1992) describes gender socialization as the internalization of idealized gender images . As a result, this creates a socially constructed right and wrong for each
