studies the composition, structure
and properties of matter”

2. How is chemistry important in our
lives?
• All objects and the materials we use, are composed by
chemical components which have an enormous diversity of
applications.
3. Daily life uses for chemistry
• Daily life chemistry has different uses, for
example: the fuel we use in our cars, the drugs
we take, the water we drink, how we cook our
food, etc.
4. The origins of chemistry
• It covers a broad time period, ranging from
prehistory to the present. Ancient civilizations
already used technologies demonstrating their
knowledge of the transformations of matter,
and some provide a basis to early studies of
chemistry.
5. Early uses for chemistry
• Extracting metals, making alloys such as bronze, the
manufacture of ceramic , enamel and glass,
fermentation of beer and wine, the extraction of
substances from plants to use them as medicines or
perfumes and transformation of fats into soap.
6. Early uses for chemistry
• Robert Boyle in 1661 was recognized for the
book; The Sceptical Chymist: or Chymico-
Physical Doubts & Paradoxes and he also
supported and developed the scientific
method.
