Summary and Analysis of The Merchant s Tale Essay example
Summary and Analysis of The Merchant s Tale (The Canterbury Tales)
Prologue to the Merchant s Tale:
The merchant claims that he knows nothing of long suffering wives. Rather, if his wife were to
marry the devil, she would overmatch even him. The Merchant claims that there is a great
difference between Griselde s exceptional obedience and his wife s more common cruelty. The
Merchant has been married two months and has loathed every minute of it. The Host asks the
Merchant to tell a tale of his horrid wife.
Analysis
The prologues that link the various Canterbury Tales shift effortlessly from ponderous drama to
light comedy. The lamentable tale of Griselde gives way to the Host s complaint about his shrewish
wife. This prologue ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To this the knight retorted with Biblical stories that state a man without a wife is bent on ruin.
These stories cites the creation of Eve for Adam as proof that a wife is man s support, as well as
examples of humble and devoted wives. January, wished to have a young wife of no older than
thirty, for a young wife would be more pliable, but Placebo warned him that it takes great
courage for such an aged man to take a young wife. He warned him of the misery that can come
from taking a wife, for she could be shrewish or a drunkard, facts that a husband will not learn
until well into the marriage. Despite the common opinion that Placebo has a wonderful wife, he
knows what faults she has. They argue about the merits of marriage, with Placebo predicting that
January will not please his wife for more than three years, but Placebo eventually assents to
January s plan. January finally decided to take a young and pretty wife, foolishly believing that
nobody would find fault with his choice. He spoke to Placebo and his friends about his choice,
praising his intended wife. January, however, worries that a man who finds perfect happiness on
earth as he would with his wife would never find a similar happiness in heaven, for one must choose
between one perfect happiness and another. Justinus countered by stating that it is more likely that
married men will get to heaven than single men. He muses that marriage might be January s
purgatory.

Different Versions Of Sleeping Beauty Stretch From The...
Various versions of Sleeping Beauty stretch from the middle of the Renaissance period to
contemporary settings. The Ninth Captain s Tale by Arabian Nights is the earliest, recorded even
before its 1550 publishing (cite). In Italy, Giambattista Basile writes Sun, Moon and Talia, which is
the first record of the Sleeping Beautytale in Europe. Charles Perraults Sleeping Beauty in the Wood
revises the tale, making it more children friendly and most similar to the Brother s Grimm version
familiar with many children. Common throughout these stories, the princess character s helpless
nature is romanticized, not to mention the popular story of a prince finding a sleeping princess and
the two living happily ever. Despite this fairy tales popularity, the several versions of Sleeping
Beauty endorse a submissive and powerless female by establishing a surreal, magical setting
around the sleeping princess character, dampening the alarming actions of the prince and systemic
lack of female agency. Magical elements present themselves throughout each of these fairy tales.
The princess character in each version is magically put to sleep or death. Perrault s version has a
fairy with a chariot of fire, pull by dragons. However, when the prince character is introduced, the
description of the surreal setting around the princess is emphasized, primarily the princess character
s place of rest. In The Ninth Captain s Tale, the mausoleum for Sittukhan is described as spectacular

Sweatshops In Developing Countries
Todays, when the citizenship is concentrated, sweatshop is becoming a striking issue of
controversies. Especially in developed countries, this problem is always boycotted, but on the
other hand it is an opportunity for people in underdeveloped countries to change their lives.
Although sweatshop is considered as a complex issue with underpayment and underworking
environment, they are beneficial to change the old ideologies, economic growth, and fair working
conditions. Firstly, women choose to work in sweatshops in developing countries because this is
their only source step out of unavailable and unthinkable situation. Women in these countries
tolerated outdated beliefs, such as being restricted to domestic chores and relying on their
husbands. Their lives are always in a vicious circle that they want to escape but do not know the
right way, so working in sweatshops provide women not only chance to create stable income, but
also sense of their own independence. As the writer mentions that with the small income from
garment sweatshop, women in Bangladesh can manage their finances, have their own choice in
marriage and having children (Sachs, quoted in Garyfalakis, para5). Moreover, they have chance
to go to school and gain their special skills. For example, earning $1 to $2 in Indonesia or
Bangladesh sounds unbelievable, but it can help a woman feed her kids and restrict diarrhea
disease (Kristof and Wudunn, 2000). Women in these countries also admitted that even

Vasilisa s Coming Of Age

Essay 1 Coming of Age
The Coming of Age The coming of age is an ethos differing on a wide spectrum (cross cultural,
spiritual, moral, physical, inter alia), which in a nutshell refers to the transition of a child into
adolescence or, as some countries refer, adulthood. It lacks the standard of generality adhered by
humanity in common. But that notwithstanding, the salient essences of coming of age more or less
approximates it welcomes independence, braveness, physical maturity, and concomitant freedom in
decision making and an overall sense of maturity. One perspective of a coming of age can be seen
by an individual undergoing self independence, both of the two short stories Vasilisa ... Show more

It is submitted that Vasilisa s coming of age is better while Jing Mei is less desirable. Vasilisa
reflected a girl s triumphant journey towards being a woman in order to be freed from
oppression. Her subsequent acts that made her prevail against her antagonists were well justified
and represented as perfect examples of poetic justice. Two Kinds reflected a somewhat different
representation of womanhood wherein rebelliousness is attached. Jing Mei s mother was not
hostile and only wanted what was best for her daughter, nothing more. The only mistake on the
mother s part is that she has overdone it (going to the extent where Jig Mei starts to feel unhappy
about herself) and neglected the possible uniqueness of her daughter. This is something common
at status quo where some families suffer the strain between a parent (or parents) and a child
whose concomitant psychological state brought about by a false sense of I am already a grown up
sows costly conflicts. For this fact, it is submitted that Jing Mei s coming of age is insufficient. But
is also noteworthy to state that Jing Mai subsequently embraced her mother s desire, it is just
unfortunate that it came a little bit too late (when her mother was already

The Amazing Adventures Of Kavalier And Clay And Amazing...
As someone who lives in the United States of America, the Freedom Capital of the World, it can
be hard for me to completely understand the horrors one endures under a dictatorship.
Practically every aspect of one s life is tightly monitored and controlled 24/7. The paranoia of
being caught doing something you should not be doing starts to wear you down more and more
every day. And god forbid you break a law or a well known rule, because there is a very good
chance that the government already knows about it. Within the stories of Michael Chabon s The
Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay and Junot DГaz s The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar
Wao, the main characters were terrorized by two different dictatorships with their usage of scare
tactics, surveillance abuse, and the stripping of their citizen s basic human rights in order to
oppress and terrorize the people and obtain complete power over them.
In The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay and The Amazing Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao,
Josef Kavalier and Beli Cabral s respective home countries, the Czech Republic and the Dominican
Republic, had two similar dictators wreaking havoc on their own people in order to obtain
power. In order to escape these horrific acts of blatant abuse, these characters were forced to
leave these countries in order to find a better life elsewhere. They left to ensure the survival of
their family name, and to live in a place where they wouldn t be hunted down and killed. In Beli s

Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer s Parole Problems
Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer is making a complaint about his parole division being understaffed

overwork them the less likely they will be able to handle their job to their full extent. Anyone
that has been overworked would have a hard time completing their job in a matter what it is.
Having overworked police officers on the street trying to do their job is very dangerous in a way.

Evolution of Technology in the United States from 1860
A number of notable technological innovations have taken place between the years 1860 1870 in
the United States. In the sphere of communications, a major development was the completion of the
first transcontinental telegraph line across North America by Western Union in 1861 (Western
Union 2009). Moreover, in 1866, after several failed attempts, the Transatlantic Cable was laid that
connected Europe and North America. Before this landmark event, the fastest communication
between the two continents had taken at least a week; after the cable was laid, messages could be
transmitted instantaneously. The first message was, famously, that a treaty of peace has been
signed between Austria and Prussia (History Magazine n/d, Third Time Lucky ,... Show more

Presidency as an institution Essay
The Presidency as an institution
Both the administration of Carter and Reagan were shaped by the Cold War in the aftermath of
Watergate. Watergate created cynicism of the government, which in turn made governing difficult
both intentionally as well as improvisational because the institution of the President was seen as
acting in the best interest of itself. President Jimmy Carter and President Ronald Reagan both had
their difficulties as President. Carter had terrible problems with economics as our country
underwent high unemployment as well as many other economic problems. Reagan was one of the
unfortunate Presidents that had to deal with assassination attempts. Both Presidents had great
accomplishments both foreign and domestic. Carter ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He invited Sadat the Prime Minister of Egypt and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin to
meet with him at Camp David in an effort to reconcile the two nations. Carter helped secure an
agreement between the sides and won national as well as world wide praise for helping the sides
come together in peace.
This success was near forgotten when in 1979, a mob of Iranian students stormed the American
embassy in Tehran, taking ninety hostages. On top of this Muslim fundamentalists seized power in
Iran, cutting off oil supply to the United States. This only worsened economics in America, and
Carter was blamed for the economic problems
Page 3 of the United States. The economy dipped so much that inflation rose to an astronomical
figure of 18%. Inflation rates stuck around in double figures for most of the time during the end of
the Carter Presidency. High unemployment rates as well as high interest rates were put on the
back burner as Carter tried to solve the Iranian hostage crisis as well as the shortage of fuel, which
is one of the reasons why the economy spiraled downhill.
As far as improvisational, Carter struggled in dealing with the Iranian Hostage Crisis. No plan
was ever developed for the release of the hostages on a diplomatic level. This lead to a disaster of
sorts in rescue attempts. Carter ended up never resolving the crisis, and it didn t end

The Changing Roles and Status of Women Essay
The Changing Roles and Status of Women
In 1903 the suffragette movement was born with the formation of the Women s Social and Political
Union (WPSU) by Emmeline Pankhurst and her two daughters Christabel and Sylvia.
At first the newly formed suffragettes relied on spreading propaganda to gain support. However, on
the 18th October 1905 they gained considerable unplanned publicity when Christabel Pankhurst and
Annie Kenney stood up at a public meeting and asked if a Liberal government would introduce
women s suffrage. Receiving no reply they stood on their seats waving a banner which said, votes
for women . They were thrown out of the meeting and arrested for causing an obstruction ... Show

The outbreak of war resulted in a truce between the suffragettes and the government. Emmeline
Pankhurst rallied the suffragettes behind the war effort on the 10th of August 1914 with the
question, What is the use of fighting for a vote if we have not got a country to vote in? In return all
suffragette prisoners were pardoned and the WPSU devoted it s formidable energies to fighting the
war.
It was absolutely essential that women should take over many of the jobs, which had been done
the men recruited into the armed forces. There were female sailors, ambulance drivers and female
police officers. However, women are probably most renowned for their work in munitions factories
making bombs and cartridge cases.
Women continued to work after the war, in the jobs the war had created for them. This showed
everyone what women were capable of. At the end of the twentieth century it was an eye opener to
those brought up in the Edwardian tradition that a woman s place was at home. It s success gained
publicity for women s rights, and the newspapers and magazines of the time were filled with praise.
In 1917, the Prime Minister Lloyd George announced that women s war work had changed people s
opinion on women s suffrage.
The suffragettes contributed to women being given the vote by

Ciabatta Bread History
In the history of art there are periods when bread seems so beautiful that it nearly gets into
museums. (Janet Flanner, Paris Was Yesterday, 1925 1939). Bread comes in a myriad of forms,
flavors, shapes, and sizes. To millions of people every day it is a source of nutrients, a way of
filling their stomachs with something their body needs. To others, it is a form of art, a chef or bakers
life and soul poured into their creation. Whichever way you see it, breadis a part of our lives, as well
as our history.
Ciabatta bread has its roots in Italy, with numerous regions taking claim to be the originators. The

Turkey Accession to EU
Will Europe Open its Doors?
Arguments and Implications for Turkey s Accession to the EU The possible accession of Turkey to
the European Union is at the center of the controversy surrounding the EU s enlargement. Given the
disparate histories of the EU member states, Turkey s own complex and battle scarred history, and
nationalistic considerations, the question of whether Turkey will ultimately be accepted as an EU
member, with full rights and privileges, is one to which there are few clear cut answers. The debate
surrounding this issue continues to gain momentum both in Turkey and in the European Union.

At the Copenhagen summit in December 2002, the EU outlined the political and economic
conditions that Ankara would have to satisfy before formal accession talks could begin. The so
called Copenhagen criteria require that Turkey have a functioning market economy and stable
institutions that guarantee democracy, the rule of law, and human rights (Phillips). With the
2002 election of the Justice and Development Party (AKP), a pro European party with Islamist
roots, a number of reforms led to increased political and economic stability. Recep Tayyip
Erdogan, who became Turkey s Prime Minister in March 2003, made it a priority to prepare
Turkey for eventual EU membership, and passed several constitutional and judicial reforms to
that end. (Solana 12). As Turkey s political reforms continued, the EU leaders agreed on
December 16, 2004 to start accession negotiations with Turkey beginning in October 2005.
Despite an attempt by the Austrian government to offer Turkey less than full membership, EU
accession negotiations were officially launched, and Turkey has closed its first chapter in
negotiations in June 2006 ( History , pars. 8 9). In spite of this, Turkey encountered several
roadblocks along the way. Specifically, these included strained relations with the Kurds in northern
Iraq and separatist PKK guerillas who resumed fighting following a ceasefire (Zakaria 45). Another
major challenge that Turkey faced was Cyprus. Javier

The Correlation between Parental Affection and Future Adult Relationships
A recent study showed that a person s upbringing is the core foundation and influence on future
relationships. According to Currie (as cited in Tayler, 2015) it has been shown that a child s early
encounters shape the brain foundation for future behaviors. Parent to child relationship is the core
foundation in a child s development. (Butcher, R. L., Gersch, 2014) Attachment theorist John Bolby
showed that having emotional relationship with a child s main caregiver is the key foundation to
that child s personality and behavior. (as cited in Butcher, et al. 2014) A warm, positive early
relationship in a child s life leads to them developing strong emotional and social capability, which
in turn directs them into making positive future relationships with others. (Hanko, 2006) Thus, the
purpose of the present study is to establish whether positive, nurturing parental upbringing is related
to positive, successful adult romantic relationship.
Childhood Relationships A large body of research has demonstrated the importance of a strong,
nurturing parental foundation and the benefits it has on future adult companionship. (Hanko,2006 )

The Educational Achievement Gap Between Minorities And Non...
Race in America is and has always been an enormous deal and a focal point in America and of

Therefore, the only thing I could think of is my race. I am one of very few African Americans on
the campus and one of few African Americanmale teachers in the school district. Although most
schools in the district have over 90% minority students, which is not the case when it comes to the
numbers of minority educators in the classroom.
This is not just a problem in my school district or just in California but one seen across the
nation. Today in the United States minority students have actually become the majority in the
classroom. With this change, there has not been any uptick of teachers of color. One place
where there is a great disparity is Boston, for every 52 Latino students there is only one Hispanic
teacher, and one black teacher for every 22 African American students (Rich, 2015). This is not a
new problem or one that can be fixed with just money, a stroke of a pen or with this study but will
take a number of things to happen. Many studies have cited for years the importance of role
models for minority students but for some reason, they still do not have these role models and it is
not concrete that these role models will help produce a positive effect on the learning abilities of
minority students.

Satan s Excessive Pride Quotes
Paradise Lost, a criteria on man s first disobedience, displays a struggle of liberty against
authority. It presents a fascinating background on how Satan, a lowly figure of God s creation,
invokes sin and death into our world. Satan, a prominent and ambitious angel in Heaven, fails to
respect God s almighty throne and loses his placement as an angel. Accepting Hellas his new
dominion, he struggles to purify the horrid bounds of Hell and overcome Gods celestial power. He
starts off as a heroic and prominent leader whose supreme pride impels his plans to overthrow God
s throne, then begins to lose his pride as he ponders his banishment from Heaven, and ultimately
loses his free will by corrupting mankind. Through the course of the poem, Satan... Show more

. . (IV. 58 60). As he contemplates his actions during his rebellion, he can see that they were not
entirely justified. He further delves into the matter that things were once more glorious than the
way they are now, and even acknowledges that his service toward God was not hard . Satan even
suggests that God did not deserve such malicious behavior from him, and implies that he owes
God service for creating him. This speech from Satan reveals his incertitude about his fall from
Heaven, in that he goes from desiring to create a Heaven of Hell to stating how he was happier
in Heaven. We can see a shift in his argument, as he goes from showing compassion toward God
to blaming him for his fall and corruption of mankind. His perpetual exposure to evil in Hell has
further restricted his free will, and he can only undertake evil. This leaves him to despise the
divine and desire wickedness. Further, Satan feels that God put him into too prominent of a
position in Heaven to become an ambitious angel. He concedes that if God had made him an
inferior angel , then he would still have been a happy angel, willing to accept God s superiority.
During this moment, Satan does not desire authority. This is substantial, in that his sole mission is
to overpower God. Instead, he blames God for exposing him to power and fame.

A Nation Essay
A Nation
A nation is said to exist when it could traced its origins through the state, in which it associate itself
with, histories. Additionally, the cultural elites must be established and well versed in writing and
speaking the national language. There must also be a valid reason for its claim on a certain
territory. It is only when these three requirements are fulfilled will the international community
consider their claim for a nation (Hobsbawm, 1990: 37). Disagreements, however, tend to arise in
the political community over the definition of a nation. This essay will try to list out the different
approaches employed in defining a nation starting from a nation being a natural cultural entity to it
being politically and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The question on why and how he makes his choice is irrelevant. It is only when he consented to
participate in the community will he readily conform to the community norms and values.
Society cultural consciousness would then play an important role in dictating the speed of his
consent. According to Herder, people become aware of their heritage when they read or listen to
myths, legends and even songs. By doing so, the community captures the Volgeist or the spirit of
the people. Language is thus seen as an important medium in spreading a community s culture as it
contains people traditions and historical memories. Therefore a nation is defined as the unification
of people through the sharing of the same cultural heritage (Heywood, 1997: 105).
This approach has been met with several criticisms. Firstly, according to Gellner the definition used
is too wide (Gellner, 1983: 53). By adopting the above criteria, any social network with the same
cultural norms and values are entitled to call themselves as a nation. This would include clubs or
any other associations. Another problem encountered by this definition is the impossibility of
limiting cultural boundaries. In addition to that Herder s claim of the unification of the people
through a common language could be dismissed as most nations have several national languages
due to its multicultural population. Switzerland, for example, has three

How Does Willy Loman Commit Suicide
In the story, Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller, Willie Loman, a traveling salesman, has just
returned home from a business trip. On his way home he almost crashes multiple times and his
wife, Linda, suggest that he request a local job from his boss. That night Willy starts having
flashbacks that wake up his sons, Biff and Happy. Biff worries about his father and decides to
find a local job in order to fix him and his father s relationship. Linda tells Biff and Happy that
Willy has been trying to attempt suicide and blames Biff for Willy s unhappiness, not on the
main reason, their financial problems. Biff tells his father that he is going to see a former
employer about a job the next day and Willy gets overjoyed at the thought of this as well as the
thought of he, himself, getting a local job. The next day does not go as planned, Willy is fired from
his job and Biff does not end up getting the job. Willy can not handle the disappointment and tries
telling himself that what is happening is not true. That night when everyone returns home, the

By definition, a tragic hero is a person born into nobility, is responsible for their own fate,
endowed with a tragic flaw, and doomed to make a serious error in judgment. Aristotle explains
tragic heroes by having a tragic flaw that causes the downfall of a hero. Tragic heroes also make
an important discovery in the story. The purpose of a tragic hero is to evoke the audience to

How To Write A Rhetorical Analysis Of I Had A Dream Speech
Speech Analysis Speech on Martin Luther King, Jr
The I had a dream speech by Martin Luther King, Jr was delivered in Washington D.C, at the
steps of Lincoln Memorial on August 28, 1963. This speech was given many years after slaves
were given freedom. The deliverance of the speech was given to address and find out the reason
after all these years of slaves given freedom, why the Negros are still not free. It was also given to
end racism in the United States for Job and Freedom. Martin Luther King, Jr, was a very
charismatic speaker and leader. He used words in a way that made people able to understand and

Immediate Response
When I read the play Accidental Death of an Anarchist for the first time, I took notes on post its.
Although I was looking for scenes that I could use in this notebook, I managed to touch on possible
themes that I thought showed up throughout the play. I also noted not just the characteristics of
each character, but what characteristics the cast member would have to have to play the part
successfully (in my opinion). As I finished the acts, I made a short summary on the most important
content I had touched on. This included themes I had noticed, characters involved, and points on
interest in the play. After I had recorded this and finished reading the play, I went through and
recorded the following; My Immediate Response I noticed that the... Show more content on

Although my scene needed more of a stagnant set, with definitive types of furniture, the interactions
between the actors and the set were something that I was definitely interested in looking into. The
cast of Curious Incident also had an insane amount of energy, which was necessary for that type of
show. Accidental Death of an Anarchist is similar in energy level (if done correctly), so the ways
that the actors harnessed their energy in Curious Incident was of great interest to me. While reading
this script and thinking about how to get my actors to achieve the energy necessary for this show, I
thought about the times in Curious Incident where the energy was at its highest, and where the
energy was at its lowest. A very memorable scene in Curious Incident that surprisingly had an
extreme amount of energy was the scene when Christopher Boone (protagonist) and his father, Ed,
have a completely silent moment for at least five minutes. It was an extremely powerful scene

The Success Of Richard Branson
These days, many students cannot afford to go to college or university. However, there are
many people who have succeeded without college degrees. Richard Branson, the founder of the
Virgin Group, is one of the successful people without a college degree. The reason for choosing
Richard Branson for this essay is because he conquered dyslexia and achieved many unique and
great businesses although he did not have a college degree. Therefore, having a college degree is
not necessary to succeed.
In Richard Branson s childhood, he struggled with dyslexia and dropped out of school, but he
started his business. Richard Branson was born in England in 1950 and lived with his family.
Branson does remember that his parents always set him challenges. When he was only four
years old, his mother stopped the car a few miles away from their house and made him find the
way home. He got lost, but later he said that it was a lesson that he never forgets. His mother
made him independent and let him challenges a lot. He has attended Scaitcliffe school and Stowe
School, which were good schools. However, he had dyslexia so he had a hard time in school. He
struggled and he was not able to get a good score. Instead of studying, Branson found success in the
field of extracurricular activities such as football and cricket, rather than studying. Branson was
nearly expelled from his school when he was found in headmaster s house being together with his
daughter. This incident left him devastated, and he made a suicide note. The headmaster... Show

suicide, homicide, domestic violence, and accidents.
All three articles acknowledge the right to keep and bear arms as a right of US citizens. Scholar

Comparison of A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings and The Handsomest Drowned Man
The old man from the story A very old man with enormous wings and Esteban from the story The
Handsomest drowned man in the world are opposites of each other, maybe the only similarity
that they have is that they are both flat and static characters. First, they are different in terms on
how they are portrayed. The old man who is an angel, was portrayed as an ugly old man who doesn
t even resemble an angel. We can see this in paragraph 2, He was dressed like a rag picker. There

While, Esteban who is just an ordinary person and at the same time a dead man, was portrayed
as a good looking guy, We can see this in paragraph 4, Not only was he the tallest and strongest,
most virile, and best built man they had ever seen, but even though they were looking at him
there was no room for him in their imagination . What s ironic here is even though he is a
drowned dead man who is supposed to be portrayed as a man full of anguish, he is still portrayed
as a good looking as peaceful looking man. And even though he is already, many women still
fantasize him.
Lastly, the old man, who is an angel, symbolizes Jesus Christ. The old man and Jesus Christ are
very much alike. They are both doubted by the people around them even though they had already
performed many miracles that no ordinary human can do. They are also both mistreated by people
despite of their power. In paragraph 4, tossing him things to eat through the openings in the wire as
if weren t a supernatural creature but a circus animal . From this line, we can conclude that the
angel was treated like a freak show by the people. The same as Jesus Christ, he was tortured by the
soldiers even though it is clear to them that he is a supernatural being.

In an era of ever increasing costs of college expenses, concerned parents and stressed high school

Handedness Of An Individual Can Be Determined
Handedness
Handedness of an individual can be determined by knowing which hand(right or/and left hand ) is
used high frequently for performing the tasks. Most of the people around the world are right
handed. There are four type of handedness. They are
Right handedness Major usage of right hand for most activities
Left handedness Major usage of left hand
Cross dominance Usage of separate hands for separate tasks
Ambidexterity Using both hands equally
Origin:
Different statistics study shows that certain percentage of population belong to particular category
is likely to be left or right handed. The motor homunculus as shown in the picture represent the
division of motor cortex that contribute to different structures of the body. Hand movement
involve fine control over the motor area. The differentiation occur in the region of brain more
particularly in the motor cortex in the cerebrum. For right handedness people the left hemisphere
of the brain dominates and vice versa.. Researchers from University of Oxford and its collaborated
universities found the link between the handedness and gene that is involved in this process which
is mainly PCSK6 gene[1]. A study conducted with approximately 54,000 individuals revealed that
24% handedness is contributed by genetic factor. [2] These gene can be influenced by cultural and
social pressure that can result in right handedness child born to left handed parents. Broca s area

Review Of Jacob Riis s Muckraker
This is a chapter of a book was written by Jacob Riis, who was a muckraking journalist.
Muckraker was a journalist who pushed for reform in publications that covered the issues of
society for the middle and wealthy classes. In this book, Riis made a photographic report about
the life of poor people in the tenements of New York. In the beginning, Riis described a raid
which was made by policemen. The object of that raid was the stale beer dives. He said that the
squads sent to make simultaneous control on all tramp s lair in the area. After that, they caught
several tramps and sent them to the police station. Then, Riis described a room of one tenement.
There was a dirty floor, broken chair, and many things that it shouldn t in the memory of the man.
In that place, there was a group of poor people. The policemen broke into that room and
surrounded those people. There was a thirteen person in that dirty room. The police took them and
went to another location. In another location, the policemen found seventy five men and women
and arrested them in four small rooms. When they went back to the police station, there were two
hundred seventy five tramps, who were captured by policemen, packed them into groups to be
arraigned in the police court. He said that the tramps might be sent to an island for six months.
After that, he described the people s life in that area which known as the bend . He said that a

These volumes reflect our understanding that historyis an act of interpretation. Essentially, this book
offers a multitude of benefits for those who wish to further study history, but at the same time the

Another pro to this book is its ability to save time and effort. The editors have condensed their
opinions and the opinions of the brightest historical minds into one book. Rather than search the
internet for an assortment of interpretations on a given historical event, the reader can flip to the
desired event in the text. Because of this, the student can rest assured that the content has been
properly evaluated, found relevant, and is, therefore, worth the time to read. Such a time saving
benefit must not be overlooked. Also, the variety of viewpoints presented in this book help to
expand the reader s knowledge. The editors provide a well rounded collection of additional
works that show the reader some of the major theories on a historical event. Basically, a reader is
able to see historical issues through the eyes of professional historians. Interpretations of American
History does not merely state the facts, it allows the reader to decide where they stand on the
historical event in question. This can lead to a deeper, more profound study of history. However,
the reader must keep in mind that this book is fact based opinion. The editors and consulted
historians are adding their thoughts to the known facts. Although such speculation can open the
door to broader thinking, it can also trip up those who take the opinion as fact. If misinterpreted,
this book might muddy the waters of the reader s mind. Still, the book in no way attempts to hide its

Marketing Swot and Pest Analysis on Aston Martin 2008
The current economic crisis has spread havoc across local and global markets. There can be no

from the catastrophe. The car industry is a huge entity that has several different subdivisions, and it
is quite intriguing to see how consumer behaviour shifts across these sublevels of the automobile
market and how different brands engage in dealing with the arising instability. Aston Martinis one of

of People Service Profit was successful in insuring a union free workforce devoted to customer

results from the first MCT test (Appendix B) explains that I need to improve on my geometry skill

The task that best demonstrates my ability to use geometry is in the TTP for week 9 The iPhone
problem (Appendix K) which required me to convert units of measurement to calculate the volume
of area that an iPhone occupies, calculate the volume of the average Australian home and then use
these values to determine whether all the iPhones would fill a house and then determine if they

Laser scanning devices
These are single devices which function by the use of a scanning laser beam to view and map an
area.
This works by use of a two dimensional sensing zone, this zone is programmable thus enabling it to
recognise any stationary equipment within the scanning zone.
Guards / Physical Barriers
The standard barrier used to prevent access to a robot consists of a perimeter fence that is made
from 2 m high rigid panels securely fastened to the floor or to some convenient structure and
positioned so that it is not possible to reach any dangerous parts of machinery.
The possibility of component ejection should also be considered when designing this type of
barrier. Fixed transparent barriers may be adequate. For most purposes, a hollow section steel
framework in filled with mesh is satisfactory.
Where regular access is required, the fencing may be provided with sliding or hinged interlocked
access gates; and/or an opening protected by a trip device.
Brakes or hydraulic/pneumatic stop valves
Should be incorporated to prevent the robot from moving or cause the gripper to release the load
when power is removed. Such as that in the event of an emergency stop.
Brakes should be provided where there is the danger of

Introduction
GDP is an important measure that indicates an economy s performance and affects employment,
inflation and foreign trade among others. Extensive research has been done on the factors that
impact real GDP growth, but many different models exist and there is no consensus that is
universally accepted. One important influence is government expenditure but economic theory
does not clearly state the relationship between government spending and GDP growth. Free market
supporters believe that government expenditure will lower real GDP per capita since they expect
that government expenditure in

How To Write An Essay On Plantar Fasciitis
Plantar fasciitis can lead to severe feet pain if it is not managed properly. A single of the best

Adnan Syed Case
The fallout in a relationship can lead to one of the most complicated and emotional periods in our
lives. We are compelled to sit through a continuous merry go round of rejection, anger or sadness
that feels almost insurmountable. Our pride will be bruised and our ego, regardless of its size, will
deflate, prompting us to murderour former significant other. This was the state s claim regarding
17 year old Adnan Syed s motive in strangling his ex girlfriend, Hae Min Lee, on January 13,
1999. The state also built its case against Adnan out of Jay Wild s, an acquaintance of Adnan who
sold drugs, testimony and the suspect s cell phone records. This case has garnered so much

Dierdre Enright, a lawyer for a similar case, proclaimed that she couldn t help but feel concerned
about racial profiling by the state in Adnan s case (Bajor Episode Summary Two: Episode 7 The
Opposite of the Prosecution ). On March 31, 1999, when a bevy of Muslims arrived in court
with the tens of thousands of dollars they had raised, prosecutors jumped to the belief that Adnan
had limitless resources. They believed that Adnan could have had help from his Muslim friends
and if set to bail, he could flee the country. Prosecutors believed that it was stereotypical of
Muslim men to kill their lovers and escape from the consequences because of the similarities with
previous cases involving suspects of Pakistani background. Furthermore, there were other biases
that were introduced by teachers and classmates who feared what Adnan was being taught at home
about his culture and religion (Mutalib Episode Summary Five: The Best Defense is a Good

it was absurd that someone would date a man named Adnan Musud Syed. The opinions of these
teachers and classmates were significant since they played a role in the way the jurors perceived
Adnan. Although the state denied that Adnan s race and religion played

Installing Windows Server 2012 Machine
GOAL
The main purpose of this lab is to install and configure services such as Active Directory, DNS
and DHCP on the Windows Server 2012 machine. Also the DNS and DHCP services were
monitored with the help of a monitoring system like OpsviewAtom and Windows Performance
Monitor. The role of DHCP is to make sure that clients (Windows 7) can obtain an IP address
whereas that of DNS is to make sure that they can access websites within the domain.
The steps regarding AD, DNS and DHCP were a refresher as it was covered in a previous class.
The installation and configuration of Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer and Performance
monitor was new which needed some research and understanding.
PROCEDURAL AND INFORMATIONAL DOCUMENTATION
The first activity of the lab is to install Windows Server 2012 Datacenter. The steps involve using
VMWare s Vsphere and the .iso image of windows server that is already been installed. The steps
for setting up the OS on the VM are pretty straightforward. After the CD/DVD has been inserted the
installation process is followed and then Server can now be used.
The second activity involved the installation of DHCP on the Windows Server machine. This is
done by Add the DHCP Server feature Option from within the Server Manager, Add Roles and
Features. After the installation is completed, the scope of the subnet is to be defined. Within the
scope, the allocated range of IP addresses is entered along with certain reservations (Windows 7
client) exceptions.

How Does Shakespeare s King Lear And Alejandro Gonzalez...
How do Shakespeare s King Lear and Alejandro Gonzalez s Birdman use literary and film
techniques to explore the complex dynamics of power, social position, and age? Shakespeare and
Alejandro Gonzalez both successfully convey how an individual is treated due to their power,
social position, and age, in their respective texts King Learand Birdman. Both portray the main
character as an individual who has lost their power and must overcome the challenges that come of
this. These characters also must endure society s treatment of them due to their old age, especially
from their younger counterparts. The authors also exhibit how each individual is treated by society
due to their social position at the time. Both authors have the idea of... Show more content on

She then goes on to say that he is not the only one fighting to be relevant and that he is terrified,
like the rest of us, that he doesn t matter . This dialogue signifies something that the audience fears,
being forgotten by society, and further conveys this to them by exhibiting a character that this
affects. A motif of nakedness is also incorporated in the film. This occurs when Riggan is about
to perform a preview of his production. He gets locked out of the back of the theatre and must
run through the streets in only his underwear. It is this scene though that provides Riggan his
chance to become relevant, as he is filmed by a pedestrian and uploaded to YouTube. It is later
that Sam refers to this video as power for Riggan. This just shows what is classed as power in the
twenty first century, and the audience can understand this when looking at celebrities and their
dominance on social media. This motif of nakedness is also present in Shakespeare s King Lear.
In this story, Shakespeare writes of a king who gives his power to his daughters only for them to
overthrow him completely and banish him from the kingdom. However, unlike in Birdman
where the character gains power, this motif occurs to symbolize Lear s complete loss of power.
As without his lavish clothes that reveal his regal status, he is no different to a farmer. The crown
that Lear wore is also symbolic of his power. As when Lear splits his kingdom up in two for his
daughters to rule,

Pediatric Nurse At The Local Emergency Department
I.Background SL, a 4 month old Caucasian male, accompanied by his 24 year old mother
presented to the ER nurse at the local emergency department. SL s mother reported he has had a
fever, runny nose, coughing, and often wheezing during the past 4 days. With a colicky infant,
she noticed a blue color to the skin, and relatively high fever developed during the night
prompted her to bring him to the emergency department. SL s mother stated when he breathes, he
sounds funny, which is also accompanied by a barking cough. She has not even given any other
thought but that he had developed a simple cold, because he has been exposed to other sick
children at his daycare. Once the ER nurse evaluated SL, he had received a referral to a pediatric
nurse at Children s Hospital a few blocks away for further and immediate evaluation in Newborn
Intensive Care Unit (NICU). II.Physical and Laboratory Findings On examination, the pediatrician
noted SL has an increased respiratory distressed. He observed high fever, widespread expiratory
wheeze, and fine crackles. Chest X rays were taken and inflammation of the bronchioles was
confirmed. In addition to the chest X ray, the pediatrician required three nasopharyngeal specimen
collections for viral testing. For this nasopharyngeal collection, the technician inserted sterile cotton

Correlation Between Lower Extremity Biomechanics and Hip Drop During Single Leg Landing
Post ACLR
Purpose/Hypothesis: Incidence of second ACL Injury after ACL reconstruction is 17 times higher
than healthy uninjured peer athletes. There is high interest in understanding and correcting LE
mechanics during single leg landings as the majority of injuries occur during single leg tasks.
Strengthening and motor control of the proximal hip musculature has been emphasized to improve
pelvic stability and reduce injury risk. Alternatively, decreased load acceptance at the kneemay
contribute to excessive hip drop during landing. Those with ACLR consistently demonstrate
quadriceps weakness and reduced knee extensor moment during landing. Our aim is to ... Show

The isometric strength of the quadriceps was significantly different side to side (INV QUAD =
2.72 В± 0.77, UNINV QUAD = 3.07 В± 0.78, quad LSI = 89% В± 14%). The hip drop of the two
limbs were weakly related to one another (r= 0.237, p = 0.026), the involved limb demonstrated
more hip drop than the uninvolved (INV HIP ADD =14.55 В± 5.05, UNINV HIP ADD = 11.00 В±
5.31). Quadriceps strength symmetry and normalized max knee extensor moment were inversely
related to hip drop with a stronger relationship on the surgical limb (INV: QUAD MVIC r = .341 p

MOM: r = .294 p = .005).
Conclusions: There is a significant correlation between sagittal plane knee and frontal plane hip
moment during SLL in both limbs. Increased quadriceps strength and increased knee moment was
associated with less hip drop during landing. Moreover, the quadriceps strength asymmetry in this
population further amplified this relationship on the surgical side. The increased hip drop indicates
that the participants involved side was not fully recovered post surgery. Limitations: As a

The Book of Three and J.K. Rowling s Harry Potterand the Philosopher s Stone would not have
completed their task without the help of their female companions, Eilonwy and Hermione,
respectively. However, even Eilonwy and Hermione could not have helped their male companions
without first looking inwards at their selves and readjusting their attitudes towards Taran and Harry,
respectively. The girls both progress and change over the course of their adventures, and these
changes are the ones that help them in the end. Without progressing and experiencing their character
development, the main goal of the hero could not have been accomplished. The main character
would have failed in their journey without their female friend because the main characters of both
books possess certain downfalls that are only made positive by the girl s influence. Both girls
character developments are dissimilar but ultimately crucial, despite not being the main characters
in their respective stories. Eilonwy is introduced as a quick witted, defensive fighter who matures
into a bold but appreciative protector of Taran. In The Book of Three, Lloyd Alexander first
presents Eilonwy as a very headstrong, but slightly offensive

Watching A Disappearing Number in Theater Essay examples
Choose one production that you have seen and which you particularly enjoyed and discuss the
aspects which made it so successful.
A Disappearing Number
I went to see a Disappearing Number, in the Theater. The production was performed by Complicite
and was directed by Simon McBurney. I really enjoyed this performance. I thought that the mixture
of maths and romance as well as the structure of the performance by incorporating the past and the
present together, was extremely successful.
The most successful aspect of the performance for me were the scene changes. I found that the
rotation of the blackboard, center stage, where the actors were able to stoop beneath it in order to
enter and exit the stage, was an effective touch to this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another really effective aspect to the performance was the use of technology, including sound
effects, projections, pod casts and voice overs. The scene which stood out most for me,
concerning technology would be the scene where Al is trapped in the lecture theatre. Here, he
begins to look through Ruth?s belongings of books, papers and passports. While he is doing
this, actions too small to be seen from the audience, a live streaming is being projected up onto
the whiteboard behind to show us, as the audience, what he is looking at. Al starts to read a page
from a book which has been marked down and as he starts to read a voice over starts reading the
same words, quietly at first and as that gradually builds up in volume, Al?s voice decreases in
volume till its just the voice over reading out the words from the book. This is one of the first
links to the past, a key theme in the performance, as the voice over is the voice of G H Hardy, the
great mathematician reading from his own book.
We were introduced to the performance by the character Ruth giving a maths lecture, simple at first
but then getting extremely difficult to follow, going off on a tangent, using mathematical
terminology I had never even heard of. This maths theme carried on throughout the whole
performance, making it, from my point of view, the strongest link from the present to the past, as
Ruth was wanting to follow in the footsteps of Ramanujan and Hardy.
One of the scenes which had the

  • 2. Summary and Analysis of The Merchant s Tale Essay example Summary and Analysis of The Merchant s Tale (The Canterbury Tales) Prologue to the Merchant s Tale: The merchant claims that he knows nothing of long suffering wives. Rather, if his wife were to marry the devil, she would overmatch even him. The Merchant claims that there is a great difference between Griselde s exceptional obedience and his wife s more common cruelty. The Merchant has been married two months and has loathed every minute of it. The Host asks the Merchant to tell a tale of his horrid wife. Analysis The prologues that link the various Canterbury Tales shift effortlessly from ponderous drama to light comedy. The lamentable tale of Griselde gives way to the Host s complaint about his shrewish wife. This prologue ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To this the knight retorted with Biblical stories that state a man without a wife is bent on ruin. These stories cites the creation of Eve for Adam as proof that a wife is man s support, as well as examples of humble and devoted wives. January, wished to have a young wife of no older than thirty, for a young wife would be more pliable, but Placebo warned him that it takes great courage for such an aged man to take a young wife. He warned him of the misery that can come from taking a wife, for she could be shrewish or a drunkard, facts that a husband will not learn until well into the marriage. Despite the common opinion that Placebo has a wonderful wife, he knows what faults she has. They argue about the merits of marriage, with Placebo predicting that January will not please his wife for more than three years, but Placebo eventually assents to January s plan. January finally decided to take a young and pretty wife, foolishly believing that nobody would find fault with his choice. He spoke to Placebo and his friends about his choice, praising his intended wife. January, however, worries that a man who finds perfect happiness on earth as he would with his wife would never find a similar happiness in heaven, for one must choose between one perfect happiness and another. Justinus countered by stating that it is more likely that married men will get to heaven than single men. He muses that marriage might be January s purgatory. January ... • 3. Different Versions Of Sleeping Beauty Stretch From The... Various versions of Sleeping Beauty stretch from the middle of the Renaissance period to contemporary settings. The Ninth Captain s Tale by Arabian Nights is the earliest, recorded even before its 1550 publishing (cite). In Italy, Giambattista Basile writes Sun, Moon and Talia, which is the first record of the Sleeping Beautytale in Europe. Charles Perraults Sleeping Beauty in the Wood revises the tale, making it more children friendly and most similar to the Brother s Grimm version familiar with many children. Common throughout these stories, the princess character s helpless nature is romanticized, not to mention the popular story of a prince finding a sleeping princess and the two living happily ever. Despite this fairy tales popularity, the several versions of Sleeping Beauty endorse a submissive and powerless female by establishing a surreal, magical setting around the sleeping princess character, dampening the alarming actions of the prince and systemic lack of female agency. Magical elements present themselves throughout each of these fairy tales. The princess character in each version is magically put to sleep or death. Perrault s version has a fairy with a chariot of fire, pull by dragons. However, when the prince character is introduced, the description of the surreal setting around the princess is emphasized, primarily the princess character s place of rest. In The Ninth Captain s Tale, the mausoleum for Sittukhan is described as spectacular with columns ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Sweatshops In Developing Countries Todays, when the citizenship is concentrated, sweatshop is becoming a striking issue of controversies. Especially in developed countries, this problem is always boycotted, but on the other hand it is an opportunity for people in underdeveloped countries to change their lives. Although sweatshop is considered as a complex issue with underpayment and underworking environment, they are beneficial to change the old ideologies, economic growth, and fair working conditions. Firstly, women choose to work in sweatshops in developing countries because this is their only source step out of unavailable and unthinkable situation. Women in these countries tolerated outdated beliefs, such as being restricted to domestic chores and relying on their husbands. Their lives are always in a vicious circle that they want to escape but do not know the right way, so working in sweatshops provide women not only chance to create stable income, but also sense of their own independence. As the writer mentions that with the small income from garment sweatshop, women in Bangladesh can manage their finances, have their own choice in marriage and having children (Sachs, quoted in Garyfalakis, para5). Moreover, they have chance to go to school and gain their special skills. For example, earning $1 to $2 in Indonesia or Bangladesh sounds unbelievable, but it can help a woman feed her kids and restrict diarrhea disease (Kristof and Wudunn, 2000). Women in these countries also admitted that even ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Vasilisa s Coming Of Age Logsdon, Amanda ENG 2000 Tjarks, Mark Essay 1 Coming of Age The Coming of Age The coming of age is an ethos differing on a wide spectrum (cross cultural, spiritual, moral, physical, inter alia), which in a nutshell refers to the transition of a child into adolescence or, as some countries refer, adulthood. It lacks the standard of generality adhered by humanity in common. But that notwithstanding, the salient essences of coming of age more or less approximates it welcomes independence, braveness, physical maturity, and concomitant freedom in decision making and an overall sense of maturity. It is submitted that Vasilisa s coming of age is better while Jing Mei is less desirable. Vasilisa reflected a girl s triumphant journey towards being a woman in order to be freed from oppression. Her subsequent acts that made her prevail against her antagonists were well justified and represented as perfect examples of poetic justice. Two Kinds reflected a somewhat different representation of womanhood wherein rebelliousness is attached. Jing Mei s mother was not hostile and only wanted what was best for her daughter, nothing more. The only mistake on the mother s part is that she has overdone it (going to the extent where Jig Mei starts to feel unhappy about herself) and neglected the possible uniqueness of her daughter. This is something common at status quo where some families suffer the strain between a parent (or parents) and a child whose concomitant psychological state brought about by a false sense of I am already a grown up sows costly conflicts. For this fact, it is submitted that Jing Mei s coming of age is insufficient. But is also noteworthy to state that Jing Mai subsequently embraced her mother s desire, it is just unfortunate that it came a little bit too late (when her mother was already ... As someone who lives in the United States of America, the Freedom Capital of the World, it can be hard for me to completely understand the horrors one endures under a dictatorship. Practically every aspect of one s life is tightly monitored and controlled 24/7. The paranoia of being caught doing something you should not be doing starts to wear you down more and more every day. And god forbid you break a law or a well known rule, because there is a very good chance that the government already knows about it. Within the stories of Michael Chabon s The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay and Junot DГaz s The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, the main characters were terrorized by two different dictatorships with their usage of scare tactics, surveillance abuse, and the stripping of their citizen s basic human rights in order to oppress and terrorize the people and obtain complete power over them. However, on the 18th October 1905 they gained considerable unplanned publicity when Christabel Pankhurst and Annie Kenney stood up at a public meeting and asked if a Liberal government would introduce women s suffrage. In return all suffragette prisoners were pardoned and the WPSU devoted it s formidable energies to fighting the war. It was absolutely essential that women should take over many of the jobs, which had been done the men recruited into the armed forces. Women continued to work after the war, in the jobs the war had created for them. This showed everyone what women were capable of. At the end of the twentieth century it was an eye opener to those brought up in the Edwardian tradition that a woman s place was at home. With the 2002 election of the Justice and Development Party (AKP), a pro European party with Islamist roots, a number of reforms led to increased political and economic stability. Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who became Turkey s Prime Minister in March 2003, made it a priority to prepare Turkey for eventual EU membership, and passed several constitutional and judicial reforms to that end. The Correlation between Parental Affection and Positive Adult Relationships Teena John The University of Texas at Tyler Research Methods, Fall 2016 The Correlation between Parental Affection and Future Adult Relationships A recent study showed that a person s upbringing is the core foundation and influence on future relationships. According to Currie (as cited in Tayler, 2015) it has been shown that a child s early encounters shape the brain foundation for future behaviors. Parent to child relationship is the core foundation in a child s development. (Butcher, R. L., Gersch, 2014) Attachment theorist John Bolby showed that having emotional relationship with a child s main caregiver is the key foundation to that child s personality and behavior. (as cited in Butcher, et al. 2014) A warm, positive early relationship in a child s life leads to them developing strong emotional and social capability, which in turn directs them into making positive future relationships with others. (Hanko, 2006) Thus, the purpose of the present study is to establish whether positive, nurturing parental upbringing is related to positive, successful adult romantic relationship. Accepting Hellas his new dominion, he struggles to purify the horrid bounds of Hell and overcome Gods celestial power. As he contemplates his actions during his rebellion, he can see that they were not entirely justified. He further delves into the matter that things were once more glorious than the way they are now, and even acknowledges that his service toward God was not hard . Satan even suggests that God did not deserve such malicious behavior from him, and implies that he owes God service for creating him. This speech from Satan reveals his incertitude about his fall from Heaven, in that he goes from desiring to create a Heaven of Hell to stating how he was happier in Heaven. We can see a shift in his argument, as he goes from showing compassion toward God to blaming him for his fall and corruption of mankind. His perpetual exposure to evil in Hell has further restricted his free will, and he can only undertake evil. This leaves him to despise the divine and desire wickedness. Further, Satan feels that God put him into too prominent of a position in Heaven to become an ambitious angel. He concedes that if God had made him an inferior angel , then he would still have been a happy angel, willing to accept God s superiority. During this moment, Satan does not desire authority. Additionally, the cultural elites must be established and well versed in writing and speaking the national language. There must also be a valid reason for its claim on a certain territory. It is only when these three requirements are fulfilled will the international community consider their claim for a nation (Hobsbawm, 1990: 37). Disagreements, however, tend to arise in the political community over the definition of a nation. It is only when he consented to participate in the community will he readily conform to the community norms and values. Society cultural consciousness would then play an important role in dictating the speed of his consent. According to Herder, people become aware of their heritage when they read or listen to myths, legends and even songs. By doing so, the community captures the Volgeist or the spirit of the people. Language is thus seen as an important medium in spreading a community s culture as it contains people traditions and historical memories. Therefore a nation is defined as the unification of people through the sharing of the same cultural heritage (Heywood, 1997: 105). This approach has been met with several criticisms. Firstly, according to Gellner the definition used is too wide (Gellner, 1983: 53). By adopting the above criteria, any social network with the same cultural norms and values are entitled to call themselves as a nation. This would include clubs or any other associations. Another problem encountered by this definition is the impossibility of limiting cultural boundaries. In addition to that Herder s claim of the unification of the people through a common language could be dismissed as most nations have several national languages due to its multicultural population. While reading this script and thinking about how to get my actors to achieve the energy necessary for this show, I thought about the times in Curious Incident where the energy was at its highest, and where the energy was at its lowest. A very memorable scene in Curious Incident that surprisingly had an extreme amount of energy was the scene when Christopher Boone (protagonist) and his father, Ed, have a completely silent moment for at least five minutes. Richard Branson, the founder of the Virgin Group, is one of the successful people without a college degree. The reason for choosing Richard Branson for this essay is because he conquered dyslexia and achieved many unique and great businesses although he did not have a college degree. Therefore, having a college degree is not necessary to succeed. In Richard Branson s childhood, he struggled with dyslexia and dropped out of school, but he started his business. When he was only four years old, his mother stopped the car a few miles away from their house and made him find the way home. He got lost, but later he said that it was a lesson that he never forgets. His mother made him independent and let him challenges a lot. He has attended Scaitcliffe school and Stowe School, which were good schools. However, he had dyslexia so he had a hard time in school. He struggled and he was not able to get a good score. A motif of nakedness is also incorporated in the film. This occurs when Riggan is about to perform a preview of his production. He gets locked out of the back of the theatre and must run through the streets in only his underwear. It is this scene though that provides Riggan his chance to become relevant, as he is filmed by a pedestrian and uploaded to YouTube. It is later that Sam refers to this video as power for Riggan. In this story, Shakespeare writes of a king who gives his power to his daughters only for them to overthrow him completely and banish him from the kingdom. However, unlike in Birdman where the character gains power, this motif occurs to symbolize Lear s complete loss of power. The hip drop of the two limbs were weakly related to one another (r= 0.237, p = 0.026), the involved limb demonstrated more hip drop than the uninvolved (INV HIP ADD =14.55 В± 5.05, UNINV HIP ADD = 11.00 В± 5.31). Quadriceps strength symmetry and normalized max knee extensor moment were inversely related to hip drop with a stronger relationship on the surgical limb (INV: QUAD MVIC r = .341 p = .001, KNEE MOM: r = .425 p .001 (n=88), UNINV: QUAD MVIC r = 0.278 p = .009, KNEE MOM: r = .294 p = .005). The scene which stood out most for me, concerning technology would be the scene where Al is trapped in the lecture theatre. While he is doing this, actions too small to be seen from the audience, a live streaming is being projected up onto the whiteboard behind to show us, as the audience, what he is looking at. Al starts to read a page from a book which has been marked down and as he starts to read a voice over starts reading the same words, quietly at first and as that gradually builds up in volume, Al?s voice decreases in volume till its just the voice over reading out the words from the book. This is one of the first links to the past, a key theme in the performance, as the voice over is the voice of G H Hardy, the great mathematician reading from his own book. We were introduced to the performance by the character Ruth giving a maths lecture, simple at first but then getting extremely difficult to follow, going off on a tangent, using mathematical terminology I had never even heard of.
