Shrek Argumentative Essay
Shrek is the hero of my story. At the beginning of the story he is located at his home. He lives
there alone and he doesn t want any company, at all. Alot of other animals come to his home
invading his privacy and that is where he will receive a call to adventure. The call to adventure was
going to see Lord Farquaad. Lord Farquaad is the person that the animals were trying to escape
from, and that s why they went to Shreks home.
He accepts the call to adventure immediately, because he wanted to get all the other animals to
leave. That s is also what motivated him to accept the call. Donkey helps him on his journey,
because he knew where Lord Farquaad was located and shrek didn t. Shrek didn t want Donkey
to show him the way. Shrek didn t like Donkey because he couldn t be quiet. None of the other
animals wanted to tell him where Lord Farquaad was because they were scared.
The main thing that is significant about shrek is that he is a Ogre. Lord Farquaad is the person that

He overheard Donkey and Fiona talking and became very angry. He hid his feelings, and started
being mean to Fiona. Shrek and Fiona both believe that the relation is doomed, because they are
from two different worlds. That is the point where everyone becomes hopeless, except Donkey.
Donkey is the one who saves them. Ogre called Lord Farquaad the next morning, because he
wanted for them to take the princess so he could go back to his normal life.
Donkey begins to battle with himself mentally and with a close friend which is Fiona. He wanted
for Shrek and Fiona, but he didn t want to betray Fiona by telling Shrek her secret. He didn t want
to tell Shrek that they actually weren t talking about her. She was talking about herself that way and
he overheard everything that was said. Princess Fiona and Lord Farquaad planned to get married
later on that day, because she was mad at Shrek and wanted to upset

Well Being Assessment
The Human Well Being Index 10 Geography Melony Weir This report serves as a means of
explaining and evaluating The Human Wellbeing Index (aka the HWI). Consisting of several
general well being indicators, the HWI was created in hopes of providing a greater insight into
living conditions in various countries. To measure and compare the quality of life for people
across the globe, several well being indicators were carefully selected and analysed. These
indicators were thought to most appropriately represent human well being in each country as they
covered areas such as education, the economy, and population. Having established that the HWI
indicators were used to determine the general living standards in each country, the facts and
figures collected were then used to create an average well being ranking system. This system
ranked each country from highest to lowest levels of life quality and human well being. The
remainder of this report will include a background on general human well being, a description of
each indicator used, the results of the HWI, and finally, an evaluation of its overall effectiveness.
Background While there is no universal definition of human well being, it can generally be
described as a concept that... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These methods of understanding well being are meant to cover the depth of the topic,
acknowledging issues such as gender inequality, poverty, and environmental sustainability. This
information is useful to people in many different fields; ranging from politicians, scientists,
activists, and everyday citizens. The importance of measuring well being lies in the fact that this
information is vital in revealing a country s strengths and weaknesses. By establishing the areas in
which a country can improve, their governments have greater incentive to address these concerns

Hunger thirst fear transport selection fire chimney: these words all have intrinsic meaning, but in
those times, they meant something else. (Wiesel 2006, p.XII). Night is a novel and an
autobiography written by Elie Wiesel in 2006. In this book, Wiesel shares his four years of
Horrifying experience at the concentration camps. The main purpose of writing this book is to
show the audience how exactly the day to day life of the Jews were at the concentration camps.
Two of the main points of this book are Relation and Faith. Wiesel has a good bond with his
father that he doesn t lose no matter what circumstances they both went under. Through out the
entire book, Wiesel shows his faith in god to the audience. There were times where he doubts in
god and almost loses faith in him and humanity but then he continues to have faith in him. The
author Elie Wiesel is a Noble prize winner and a teacher born on September 19, 1928 in Sighet,
Transylvania. Wiesel wanted to study religion because of his religious background but
unfortunately that could not happen because he was sent to the concentration camps at the age of
twelve. I chose this book because it was something that I chose it in high school to write a paper
on but I could not do it because it did not meet the requirements of the professors of my sophomore
and junior year. The Author uses his Point of View, Symbolism and Foreshadowing in this Novel.

Queene Quotes In Queenie
Queenie
Nelson Mandela once said, No one is born hating another person because of the colour of his skin,
or his background, or his religion. Instead, it is the surrounding environment and its people that
teach prejudice and discrimination. An example of the transmission of xenophobia from parents to
an impressionable child appears in the text, Queenie .
Queenie is a prologue to the novel, Small Island by Andrea Levy from 2004. The story takes
places in England shortly after World War I. The storyline follows a girl, Queenie, attending the
Empire Exhibition with her parents and two employees. She is the protagonist of the story, and the
story is written from her point of view with a first person narrator. Therefore, her viewpoints and...

One of the new things that she does try, however, is the tea from Ceylon. This is most likely
because tea re minds her of the British culture. When Queenie wonders about the dots of the Indian
women s foreheads, the mother stops Queenie from asking in case the dots meant they were ill and
con tagious. This shows that when the mother faces something unknown she immediately pre
sumes the worst instead of turning curios and adventurous like Queenie.
Graham and Emily, the family s employees, are accompanying the family at the exhibition. They
are completely absorbed in each other and seem to consider Queenie as a burden be cause they
have to follow her around. During the encounter with the black man Emily and Graham act
childish and teasingly push Queenie towards the man, cheering kiss him, kiss him. Not once do
they consider that the man might be able to speak and understand English. Earlier in the text,
Graham also says, She can t understand what I m saying... They are not civilized ll. 90 91, p. 3),

Meaning Of Words In Adah s A Silent Vow
Has a speech ever been presented that was very meaningful, but was also short and cut straight to
the point? The proverb words should be weighed, not counted perfectly shows that. When someone
is giving advice, a person doesn t just sit there and count the amount of words that are being said;
they pay attention to the message and grasp the concept. This proverb originates from a Yiddish
(Jewish) author. It s understandable why he would say something like this because his ancestors
went through the Holocaust. They tried explaining how they felt, but no one (especially Hitler)
listened to them which caused them to forcefully adapt. Another example, FBLA has planned a
fundraiser to sell a product for premature babies. Their item of sale is... Show more content on

Adah s poem is very revealing. Within the first few lines, the author wrote; But the silence of a
pen on a paper is a great sound (Adah). Although using pen and paper could be used to count the
words, what the person wrote down made a great sound . It shows that sometimes, people can t
just speak their mind; each thought needs to be written out, taking each word into deep
consideration. This poem shows that you don t have to speak literal words to get your point
across. Tony states, Here I have taken a silent vow and my pen spits liquid pellets on the faces of
retreating army (Adah). Without moving a single facial muscle, words that are written down can
mean the world to the right person. Fighting battles could be as easy as an arrangement of the
alphabet 26 simple letters. Tony s work enhances this proverb by taking a silent vow against
stereotypes. Worded better than anyone else could have, Adah says, Here where I am the
commander of the silent war and the pen my silent gun (Adah). As the author, commander, of this
work of literature; Adah controls the silent gun (pen). He battles the stereotype that one has to
openly speak without thinking about what they re saying. Contemplate all expressions; don t argue
blindly. A person shouldn t think on their feet . A Silent Vow elaborates on quality over quantity
through each line that Tony Adah

Narrative Essay On Integrity
I stared at myself in the mirror, the image of myself seeming to distort. Tears streamed down my
face and I covered my face with my hands, sinking to the bathroom floor. Nothing made sense. I
looked in the mirror, but it didn t look like me. Did I steal this body from someone? I didn t
understand why I was feeling like this. I got myself cleaned up and climbed in bed, not wanting to
be conscious of my thoughts anymore.
The next morning I got up, put on a skirt and a blouse, and caked my face with makeup. The
whole process was very tiring, since it was five in the morning, but I had to do it. If I didn t, I
wouldn t fit in with everybody else. So I readied myself for the day and jumped right into the pit
of sharks that was high school. This place was my own personal nightmare. I didn t have very
many friends to begin with, and my extreme insecurity only made it harder for me to talk to
people. I felt wrong constantly. I wasn t even there, really. I just stumbled through my schedule,
went home and took off the mask, then broke down and started the process all over again. It was

myself all the time. I had everything. I had friends, few and far between, but people ... Show more

Analysis Of Corecivic s Politics And The English Language
At first glance, CoreCivic strictly adheres to an ideology of acceptance and second chances, and
the discourse of their Code of Conduct strongly reflects that. However, on deeper analysis, certain
anomalies present themselves, and CoreCivic s apparent ideals begin to shift. Luckily, many of
these irregularities can be easily pointed out by applying Orwell s criteria for bad writing from
Politics and the English Language , such as misuse or overuse of idioms and vague use of language.
While CoreCivic s statements paint a remarkably friendly picture, context paints another. Firstly,
nearly every statement made by CoreCivic is unnaturally saturated by honorific words and phrases,
oftentimes with as many as four in a single sentence. In conjunction... Show more content on

Consequences Of The Blue Hotel And Tennessee s Partner
All Actions Have Consequences, Sometimes
In Stephen Crane s The Blue Hotel and Bret Harte s Tennessee s Partner, many themes are
evident; some of these themes are easily recognizable while others depend on the perception of the
reader. The stories share the themes of personal integrity and that all actions have consequences.
However, there are several themes that are unique to each story that can have a diverse effect on
the reader, such as the rules of society to fear of the unknown. The plot and storyline of Tennessee s
Partner is straightforward, but after reading the complex, diverse plot and storyline of Crane s The
Blue Hotel, one can imagine many different plots that could have taken place throughout the story.
Through illusions, the reader can take what each author presents and let his or her imagination do
the rest; there is not a set feeling or reaction that the every reader will obtain. In both stories, distinct
and diverse motifs are present ranging from personal integrity and all actions have consequences,
which are found throughout both stories.
The characters Tennessee partner in the story, Tennessee s Partner, have a complicated but strong
relationship. At first, we see them as good friends to one another, but later on Tennessee does some
unkind things to his partner. However, Tennessee s partner is not upset about this, and upon
Tennessee s return, he is the first to greet him and shake his hand. Showing his true integrity
Tennessee s partner never holds a grudge on Tennessee. Throughout the rest of the story, Tennessee
s partner never downgrades Tennessee for the things he did and stood by his side to the end.
Nevertheless, all of the bad choices Tennessee made caught up with him. No matter what Tennessee
s partner did, he could not fix the amount of damage Tennessee caused himself. Therefore, all of his
bad actions had consequences were well overdue. Comparing, The Blue Hotel, there are similarities,
including integrity and all actions have consequences. The Swede drives himself insane, trapped by
his fixed idea about the unknown environment of the west. Causing the people around him to feel
uncertain and standoffish. Consequently, his attitude toward other characters throughout the

Behavior Disorders And Attention Deficit Hyperactivity...
Behavior disorder is defined as Any of various forms of behavior that are considered
inappropriate by members of the social group to which an individual belongs. (The American
Heritage Stedman s Medical Dictionary, 2015) Due to its broad definition, methods of
identification, diagnosis, and treatments are varied and controversial. After my son was
diagnosed with Sensory Processing Disorder and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in
November of 2012, I recognized a stigma within the community surrounding behavior disorders
that made it difficult to find the appropriate support for my son and my family. This paper will
discuss the causes of behavior disorders, methods for proper identification, and problems that can
arise in the home, school, and community of a child with a behavior disorder. Behavior disorders
vary in symptoms and name, and can be divided into several classifications, including anxiety
disorders, disruptive behavior disorders, emotional disorders, dissociative disorders, and pervasive
developmental disorders. In addition to Sensory Processing Disorder and Attention Deficit
Hyperactivity Disorder, Bipolar Disorder and Autism fall under the behavior umbrella. Like many
other mental illnesses, direct causes of these disorders are hard to pinpoint. Although the exact
cause of most mental illnesses is not known, it is becoming clear through research that many of
these conditions are caused by a combination of biological, psychological and

Example Of Phonetic Based Instructional Unit
B.1. In order to fulfill my Teacher Work Sample assignment, I created a phonetic based instructional
unit, The Foundations of Reading, for a level one through three, adult ESL class. I completed this in
accordance with the following guiding learning goals:
1. Students will identify the letters and sounds of the English alphabet,
2. Students will recognize consonants and vowels, and
3. Students will learn short and long vowel sounds.
Upon completion of the unit, and after reviewing student pre and post test scores, it became evident
that the goal my students made the most improvement in was goal number two;
Students will recognize consonants and vowels. Students achieved an average, combined score, on
the Vowels and Consonants Pre test, of 88 percent. After receiving the corresponding instruction in
this area, their combined average score improved eight percent to 96 percent.
In analyzing this result, I believe there are two plausible reasons. B.1.a. One reason for the students
success with this second goal may actually be the instruction they attained in pursuing the first goal
Students will identify the letters and sounds of the English alphabet. While addressing the letters
and most common phonetic sounds of the English alphabet, (including short vowels sounds) in
lessons two and three, incidental discussions occurred regarding the vowels themselves, due to
students curiosity, prior knowledge and the changeable nature of English vowels phonetic
representations.

Co2 Into Methanol Essay
CO2 is one of the biggest problem our planet currently faces. Scientists around the world are racing
to find a solution that will help us deal with the excessive Carbon Dioxide in our atmosphere.
CO2 is at its highest levels in millions of years. And without a solution these conditions will not
change to acceptable levels anytime soon.
There are several research projects currently tackling this issue. Some have found methods to
convert CO2 into methanol, or hydrocarbon fuel. But these are not very useful at this time. Other
attempts have produced products that are either too expensive or not scalable.
There is even a team in Iceland trying to turn CO2 into solid rock which can then be buried. But
this method has not be fully proven as yet, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Adam Rondinone, an author of the study, explained to Popular Mechanics. It also only requires 1.2
volts of electricity, and yields over 60% of CO2 into Ethanol. These results were possible because
the catalyst s nanostructure was easy to change, this, according to the researchers.
In a press release, Dr. Rondinone said this system is effectively reversing the combustion process.
Explaining that it is very difficult to produce ethanol from carbon dioxide with one catalyst.
Because of how cheap the materials involved are, and very low electricity requirements, this
method can easily be scaled to meet global needs.
The team at Oak Ridge did say this is not a ready to use solution for global CO2 reduction. More
development using this system will need to be made in order to have a scalable program in place.
The Automotive Industry can benefit greatly from this innovation, and we can easily say it will be
a big deal for other fuel consuming industries. In the US we are currently blending over 10% of
gasoline with ethanol.
The Oak Ridge lab will continue to develop this revolutionary technology, and if all goes well we
might just be able to fix Earth s CO2

prisoner doctors was recorded and retained. For example, typhus began to spread feverishly

Many of the mid status non prisoner doctors conducted research to benefit the Nazi military
effort. Research on altitude, sea water, and mustard gas was conducted to help increase the
survival rate of navy, air force, and army personnel. In order to do so, the mid status doctors were
required to either suspend, or redefine their moral code, to serve their higher purpose of careerism.
The first group of these experiments, the high altitude experiments, were done under the
supervision of Dr. Sigmund Rascher, an SS doctor at the Dachau camp. High altitude research
duplicated the atmospheric conditions a German pilot might encounter in combat when falling
great distances through space without a parachute and source of oxygen. Altitude experiments
were carried out by locking the prisoner in an airtight, low pressure chamber, then simulating high

L. monocytogenes, L. innocua, L. welshimeri, L. seeligeri, L. ivanovii and L. grayi. Although the
first four of these have all been implicated in human infection nearly all cases of Listeria infection
are caused by L.monocytogenes (Foodsafety.org, 2017).
Listeria is the name of a bacteria found in soil and water and some animals, including poultry and
cattle. It can be present in raw milk and foods made from raw milk. It is also found in marine
environments and is often associated with fish and seafood products. Animals such as sheep, goats

Poverty and Children Education In this time and age the United States contains a high number of
students in the public schools who are under the poverty line. Poverty is defined as the state of
being really poor financially. Poverty in the United States has become a complicated problem that

United Statesis showing great signs of improvement, povertyremains a serious issue. While

When a child s early experiences are chaotic and one or both parents are absent these causes the

child to have trouble connecting with classmates and lack of social skills. The article also

Employee Privacy Employee privacy concerns came up when conducting medical examination
of employee s pre and post fitness program due to employee rights. The federal Health Insurance
Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) set a national standard for privacy of health

employee is volunteering federal law does not stop employers to have access to the information

What Is The Theme Of The Snow Child By Angela Carter
3.Angela Carter s The Snow Child
In The Snow Child , Angela Carter criticizes gender roles as well as the result of when we can
finally fulfill a desire and this is conveyed in a very interesting way. Angela Carter does not simply
rewrite the story of Snow White but rather represents the objectification of the female gender, even
in a premature age. This story belongs to the post modern literary era, which is known for
deconstructing things, going deep to the core, criticizing and pointing things out. All those things
can be found in this story, not only as a post modern feature but also as a feminist feature. The tales
in [The Bloody Chamber] still foreground the violence and abuse but the narrative itself provides an

The Master Behind the Scandal
The Empire of the Edge is the article under discussion. Patrick R. Keefe writes the article, and it
deals with the issue of Steven A. Cohen, who is a billionaire trader and masterminded the greatest
financial scam in the history of United States stock market through his hedge fund S.A.C Capital
Advisors. The story as discussed in the article starts with the issue when a medicine called
bapineuzumab (Keefe) was being developed to treat Alzheimer disease. Mathew Martoma joined
S.A.C Capital Advisors and worked his ways to get close to Dr. Sid Gilman, one of the doctors

His negligence caused a lot of problem for the others. Many people who had invested funds in
bapi lost a lot of money due to Cohan shorting of Elan and Wyeth stock. After the major issue that
was faced by Cohen and because of these charges, the legal team settles the case at a huge price.
Afterward, the company and Cohen separated their ways entirely. Despite this major issue that
Cohen has faced, he is still a very active member of the financial community, and considered as one
of the best hedge funds manager in the United States by many.
The significant finding from this article is that the world of finance is a very strange world. This
world can offer opportunities to many, and at the same time, it can prove to be a mess for the
others. Many people are not corrupt in their person, but by being negligent or by being careless,
they fail at doing their duty successfully at some points in time. However, what the article talks
about is the complete picture. Steven A Cohen faced a problem. He got entangled in an enormous
financial mess.
However, not only did he face the charges, he tried to resolve the issues as positively as possible.
Because of his efforts, he could resume his career as a financial hedge funds expert very soon.
Usually, once a person faced such charges, his or her job is over. When it comes to Cohen, he

Personal and Collective Unconscious
The Personal and Collective Unconscious
To many, the unconscious is a section of our minds that is inconceivable and almost nonexistent.
Like many things in life, what we cannot explain, we cannot accept. Sigmund Freud, mastermind
of the field of psychology, began to theorize and explain the concept of the unconscious and its
effects on our personal lives. Carl Gustav Jung was a young colleague of Sigmund Freud who made
the exploration of this inner space [the unconscious] his life s work (Boeree 1). Jung was not only
knowledgeable on the Freudian theory he was also knowledgeable in mythology, religion,
philosophy and traditions such as Gnosticism, Alchemy, Kabala, and similar traditions in Hinduism
and Buddhism (Boeree 1). Jung ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(Carl Gustav Jung 76, 77)
Our memories are in fact like a car that disappears around a corner. Just because it is no longer
visible it doesn t mean that the car is no longer existent. It is the same with our thoughts and
memories. Once we think or experience something it becomes stored in our minds. This is then
what begins to dictate the way in which we carry out our lives. Our minds are continuously
working and our personal unconscious allows us to store information and experiences that can
either be retrieved or unconsciously applied. The personal unconscious, therefore, is
distinguished by the fact that the materials contained in this layer are of a personal nature in so
far as they have the character partly of acquisitions derived from the individual s life and partly of
psychological factors which could just as well be conscious (494). Not only is the personal
unconscious different for each individual, it can easily be recalled or conscious. This is what
separates the personal conscious from the collective unconscious.
The collective unconscious is the part of the unconscious that was never conscious before.
Therefore, the contents of the collective unconscious have never been in consciousness, and
therefore have never been individually acquired, but owe their existence exclusively to heredity
(C. G Jung 1). The collective unconscious is the area where we find the kind of knowledge we are
all born

The NBA Should Enforce a Hard Salary Cap
How many of you sports fans out there are sick of paying twenty five dollars for a lousy seat at an
NBA game? How many of you are sick of seeing the same teams in the finals every year? I m sure
there are thousands of you out there that feel this way, as do I. The way we can fix these problems
is to demand that the NBA enforce a hard salary cap. A hard salary cap would lower ticketprices,
allow for more teams to be more competitive and eliminate the possibility of any future lockouts. If
the three things listed above aren t met, it s hard to say if the NBA will survive at all. I want to see
the NBA survive, but not in the way things are being run now. A hard salary cap is the only way...

( 1 ) The players realize that they are eliminating their average fan and they don t care. We as fans
should not pay these outlandish ticket prices. A hard salary cap is the only thing that will lower
salaries and ticket prices. If ticket prices aren t lowered, I personally feel that the players can kiss
their pay checks goodbye. But what do other people think.
Some people believe that NBA arenas will fill up in spite of high ticket prices. Just last year
Michael Jordan made 33.14 million dollars while the whole Chicago Bulls salary cap was 26.9
million, and all season long seats were filled. That means to some that no matter the amount, people
will continue to attend NBA games.
To the people that believe this, I must remind them of Major League Baseball and the situation
that they faced just a few years back. First, players salaries skyrocketed to obscene levels,
alienating their average fan. Next, the players couldn t decide how to divide up their millions.
Finally, they quit playing the game and their fans quit caring about Major League Baseball.
Does any of this sound familiar? This is exactly what s happening in the NBA right now. If it
happened to the American Pastime it can, and certainly will, happen to the NBA. Yet people, in
spite of the lower ticket prices provided by a hard salary cap, aren t convinced that a hard salary
cap is a good idea. They feel that players

Comparing My Husband And I Cultures
For my sociology project, I decided to compare and contrast my husband and I cultures. In doing
so I discovered we shared many cultural norms and tradition although there was some noticeable
difference in terms of how our communities are run within our defined societies. My husband hails
from a small country on the coast of West Africa named Sierra Leone. That s a huge contrast from
the Hmong people who don t have a land to call home. Our people through centuries of prosecution
have scatted throughout Asia and America with the vast majority still residing in our ancestral land
of China. Despite this, however, Hmong people like the people of Sierra Leone continue to possess
a strong sense of identity and culture. Often Hmong communities in the United State take on a
specific identity, not unlike American Indians reservation or other sub cultural community in The
United State. Conversely, although the people of Sierra Leone have a nation filled with rich
tradition and culture but continue to be inundated by a western culturewhich could be having an
adverse effect. Ultimately our discussion highlights that both of our people ultimately want to move
forward as one to a better and prosper future.
My husband and I discussed the structure of family in our culture. While mine was a patriarch
system, his, however was the matriarch. Like most Asian culture the male is often the head of the
family and hold the most status. The people of Sierra Leone, however, hold the

Immanuel Kant On Moral Education
Paper One: Kant on Moral Education
Jennifer Penkov: 1345217
Phil 444, Dr Alan McLuckie
Friday, February 12, 2016
Word Count: 1, 567 This paper will focus on Kant s account of a moral education as found in his
Lectures on Pedagogy. It will begin by discussing why Kant believed that education, specifically
moral education, is necessary for a human being to realize her Bestimmung (destiny), but not
necessary for non rational animals to reach their natural vocations. It will analyze the role a moral
education (the general development of morality) plays in becoming human and will continue by
outlining the structure and key points of Kant s hypothetical moral educational system. Finally this
paper will highlight possible conflict between education and autonomy (a concept vital to his
broader moral philosophy) but will ultimately argue that moral education is compatible with the
notion of the intelligible self. Kant makes it explicit in his work that the human being is the only
creature that requires education to reach its natural destiny. In order to fully make sense of this
notion, it is first necessary to briefly discuss the twofold nature of the human self as explained in
Critique of Pure Reason and developed in Groundwork for the Metaphysics of Morals. The human
being is thought of as participating in both the empirical and intelligible realms. The empirical self
is sensual and determined, in that it participates in the natural world and is governed by the laws of
nature

The World s Population Will Face A Severe Shortage Of Water
Case Summary According to research conducted by the United Nations, approximately two
thirds of the world s population will face a severe shortage of water by 2025(Shaw Barry, 2014,
pg. 131). Some countries have begun to prepare early by importing tankers of water from other
countries. The State of Michigan; however, is not as concerned about the shortage due to having
over 11,000 lakes including the Great Lakes. Due to the vast amount of water sources, Nestle
has built a bottled water plant in Mecosta County, Michigan. The new plant has cost Nestle over
100 million dollars and has caused much controversy with locals. Nestle had built a 12 mile
pipeline from the plant to a local spring. Many organizations in Michigan saw this as a huge
threat to water conservation and later had resorted to suing Nestle. Lawyers from organizations
such as, Michigan s Citizens for Water Conservation and Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa
Indians had claimed that due to reasonable use and a treaty from 1836, the land was protected from
misuse of transportation of water. Michigan state judge, Lawrence Root, had bought the argument
and had upheld the lawsuit. Ruling that the environment is at risk no matter how much water
Nestle draws out, he ordered the pumps turned off (Barry, 2014, pg. 132). Around two years later
the case had been appealed and sent back to the appellate court to be revised. The court had entered
Nestle into an agreement that they would not pump more than 250 gallons

The Deregulation Of The U.s. Economy
In the 1920s, there was an increase in bank credit and loans. Confident in the potency of the U.S.
economy, the stock market became a one way bet. Many consumers borrowed money to buy
shares. Firms took out more loans for expansion. Because people took on so much debt, it meant
they became more vulnerable to a change in confidence. When that change came in the form of
the 1929 crash, those who had borrowed money were left exposed. Moreover, rush to sell shares
trying to remedy their debts. Interconnected to buying shares on credit was the practice of buying
shares on the margin. To buy on the margin meant you paid between 10 20 percent of the value of
the shares; but it also meant you were financing 80 90 percent of the value of the shares. This
allowed more currency to be invested, which inflated the value of each share. Numerous investors
made millions buying on the margin, the so called margin millionaire investors made millions in
profits buying on the margin and observing the rising price of their share. However, it also left
stockholders vulnerable when prices fell. During the 1920s, the virtually endless increasing
movement of the markets seemed to make this practice practicable, Exacerbating this tendency was
the fact that more and more investors were getting bank advances in order to pay the preliminary
marginal buy in, Thusly resulting in there being very little tangible currency supporting these
stocks values. As investors and brokers began to identify

The Passions Of The Man
The Passions of the Man We exist in an artificial world created from our passions. Uncontrollable
as they may seem, our natural inclinations and mental faculties have actually effected immense
social change on both a physical and mental level. As oxymoronic as it may seem, it is ultimately
our innate passions that both drive conflict and allow for cooperative endeavor, and Thomas Hobbes
s masterful 17th century work Leviathancaptures this point beautifully. His passions are a kind of
internal motion related to one s will and encompass character traits, moods, or ephemeral states of
being such as sudden glory causing laughter. Hobbes uses the idea of passions as a motivating
source to flush out a future directed approach to the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Unfortunately, we live in the natural world. Far from perfect. Our passions do not even come close
to fitting us in the perfect world. In fact, they prevent its existence. The nature of man then is one of
passions and thusly, one of war. According to Hobbes, the nature of war consisteth not in actual
fighting, but in the known disposition thereto during all the time there is no assurance to the
contrary. (13) War is not a state of fighting, it is a state of being; specifically a state of being in
which safety and protection of one s life or happiness are close to non existent. Coupled with the
very real ideas of exhaustible resources and the will to survive, this war or natural world is then
populated by beasts unreasoned beings dominated by their psyches and unable to coexist in a
society. Hobbes concluded that in the nature of man, we find three principal causes of quarrel.
First, competition; secondly, diffidence; thirdly, glory. () These three passions are at once
dangerous to the natural world, but necessary for the artificial world to exist. The competition to
which Hobbes speaks is a competition for power. In his observations, it is the powerful that are
happy and can assure their continued felicity. Thus, competition begets violence. Diffidence
implies the defense of oneself and your well being in fear of it being stripped of you. Diffidence
seems to beget violence as well. And glory begets the most violence. The thirst for power becomes

The Symbolism of the Purse in Theft by Katherine Anne Porter
The purse in Katherine Anne Porters short story, Theft , is linked to several episodes and in each
event reveals the main character s inner personality. The first episode is her encounters with three
men. The second event is the theft of her purse. Lastly, the protagonist confronts the thief. In each
episode the main characterdisplays her intimate personality.
After an afternoon cocktail party, a Latin man named Camilo escorts her to the subway station
through the rain. Camilo makes several gracious gestures to try and pay for her, but she refuses, as
she is afraid he may fall on the rainy steps when returning. She states that he made an effort to

She then makes reference to a letter that had made her mind up for her. This indicates that she
knows she is indecisive. Roger comments on her beautiful purse and she responds that is was a
birthday present and that she likes it. Here we see she is proud to own something that someone else
admires.
Her third encounter is with a man with whom she wrote an act for one of his plays. He complains
about his financial situation and shows her the new rug he bought. She then starts thinking of her
empty purse and how he owes her fifty dollars for the act she wrote for him. He downplays her
writing and says her stuff was no better than mine, and she says, let it go. Later we see that she is
used to letting things go.
The next event is the theft of her purse. While she is in the bathtub the janitress knocks and comes
in, needing to inspect the radiators. When she gets out of the bathtub to get a cigarette from her
purse, it is gone. She knows that the janitress has taken the purse. Her purse made of gold cloth
symbolizes all property. The purse represents the difference between the haves and the have nots.
As she is going over whether or not to confront the thief she thinks it would cause a great deal of
ridiculous excitement. She again decides to let it go.

Based on earlier attempts at deception the LCS had a general idea of where their false landing
sites should be (Barbier 8). This was by all means a united Anglo American effort, unlike
Operation Mincemeat which was a solely British endeavor, many American units, like the
American 23rd Headquarters Special Troops, who for example, played a role in Operation
Fortitude (Barbier 9). In November of 1943 the main objectives of the deception operation were
planned. A deception operation for the invasion of France should have three objectives. First, to
convince the Germans the attack was coming in the Pas de Calais region or east of there.
Second, to keep the Germans doubting the real date and time of the attack and third, during and
after the invasion contain as many German troops as possible in or east of the Pas de Calais for

decided that dummy aircraft, antiaircraft, tanks, artillery, and landing boats would be assembled in
South East England while wireless communication to simulate a command center were also
fabricated by several people with radios in South East England (Barbier 14 15). Operation Fortitude

Small business owners often fail to grasp the understanding of the legalities of ownership and
how to separate their business liability from themselves. This means there must be a legal
structure in place to protect the investor from the mishaps or misfortunes of the business, aside
from carrying a business insurance policy. State and county tax laws play a role in determining
how the legalities of the business should be structured, as well. In many cases an incorporated
business is often preferential over a limited liability company with outside investors. Both legal
entities ensure to protect the investor by separating personal and business assets. Being
incorporated either way allows the RV park an easier avenue of attracting new investors, raising
capital, and if necessary, allowing a more manageable transfer of ownership. There are some
differences between the types of incorporation, though most are minimal. Limited liability
companies have options of four different types of tax treatment, whereas a standard incorporated
business, such as an S corporation or C corporation is often taxed heavier. Some of the drawbacks
for a business set up under an incorporation is the additional requirements for administrative details
and record keeping. In some cases, becoming incorporated can create an additional tax burden for
the business. This can be especially detrimental to the owner of the business during the

Paper On Landscaping
Gardening and landscaping is a wonderful way to make use of your outdoor space. In order for
you to have a beautiful garden, you are going to have to plan it around the conditions that are in
your area. You can have great looking garden anywhere; you just have to make sure that you work
with what you have. Living in the west or southwest where the air is arid and the climate is dry,
will require the planting of drought tolerant plants that can survive the hot and dry conditions that
are present in these areas of the country. Since these areas are close to the desert, they can get
anywhere from 4 to 16 inches of rainannually. Rain is very inconsistent in this area of the country.

The early steps toward winterizing includes weeding, mulching and composting the weeds.
Hopefully, the gardener will have time to weed before the weeds develop seeds. If this should not
be the case, compost or dispose of the resultant greenery away from the garden to prevent a
bumper crop of weeds next year. Cover fallow areas of the garden or future garden patches with
garden cloth or black plastic; lay down a layer of mulch, and cover the mulch with plastic.
Weight it down well. The mulch and plastic will kill the weeds in the future gardening area;
containing the mulch as the filling in a plastic sandwich allows the gardener the ability to lift
away incompletely rotted material without excessive handling. This is especially important for
individuals with mold allergies. As autumn approaches and the nights grow longer and colder,
assess the plants still growing in the garden. Salad beds and even tomato plants can be made to
grow a little longer if surrounded by square hay bales topped with a plastic window . This creates
an impromptu cold frame. The hay or straw provides insulation; the plastic allows sunlight for
photosynthesis and solar heating. Autumn is a good time to plant green manure crops, such as
turnips, that can be tilled into the soil in the spring. It is also a good time to apply slow release
organic fertilizers.

Mary Jackson Case Summary
Subjective: Mary Jackson, 27 years old female, was evaluated at the University of Florida Speech
and Hearing Clinic on October 10, 2017 because of her complaints of hearing difficulties, vertigo,
and tinnitus. She reported the following: often asking people to repeat themselves, dizziness,
balance complications, high pitched tonal ringing in the right ear, and an increased difficulty in
understanding conversational speech, especially in the presence of background noise, since
becoming pregnant. Mrs. Jackson had a family history of hearing loss from her maternal side due to
otosclerosis. She reported a hearing screening had been done approximately 10 years ago while in
high school and results indicated normal hearing. The patient experienced drastic changes in her
daily routine: discomfort, embarrassment, and social isolation. Her listening needs include
communication with her newborn and family members, co workers, and social networking.
Objective: Bilateral otoscopy examinations indicated normal pinnas, external ear canals, and
tympanic membranes. A pure tone... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Pure tone audiometry suggested the presence of otosclerosis in the right ear. SRT (50dB for the
right ear and 30dB for the left ear) corresponds with the pure tone thresholds. WR scores for the
right ear were 96% (85dB) and 100% (70dB) for the left ear, which are consistent with the CHL in
the right ear and WNL in the left ear. Typanometry confirmed that finding by revealing a reduced
compliance, which indicated less mobility of the tympanic membrane due to increased stiffness.
These findings corresponded with the presence of Carhart s notch at 2000Hz from the audiogram.
The absence of OAEs in the right ear also confirmed the conductive component of hearing loss in
the right ear due to otosclerosis. The audiology evaluation affirmed that the patient has a decrease in
hearing for natural and speech sounds in the right

Audre Lorde s Essay On Intersectionality
Audre Lorde s essay on intersectionality highlights the point that there is not a single issue fight
because we do not live day to day with our single issue lives (Lorde, pg 654). Acknowledging that
we are beneath the dominant class is important to reconstruct the structural power. Intersectionality
requires power that fortifies how our differences come together on both an individual level an a
collective foundation. There are many issues we tend not to even look at because the women that it
affects usually have always been overlooked for the dominant groups oppressed world (Lorde, pg

Pierre later tells him Don t you feel more and more trapped? First you shaved your moustache,

their husbands. The babysitter responds with it s the law, you know. So God is protecting me. This
response brings up the concept that Muslim women are childlike needing to be saved. An
intersectional translation of islamophobic misogyny. I believe this scene particularly highlights the
point that gender trumps religious faith and ethnicity. Johnson Reagon says that a coalition is not
a home and should not feel comfortable (Reagon, pg 259). This film debunks the myth that all
women share a common experience simply by being a female. (Reagon, pg 360). However,
when we see all women get together, we begin to see the differences between all of us including
race, sexuality, status, age, able ism, etc. I believe Pierre standing up for a man in this scene shows

  • 3. Well Being Assessment The Human Well Being Index 10 Geography Melony Weir This report serves as a means of explaining and evaluating The Human Wellbeing Index (aka the HWI). Consisting of several general well being indicators, the HWI was created in hopes of providing a greater insight into living conditions in various countries. To measure and compare the quality of life for people across the globe, several well being indicators were carefully selected and analysed. These indicators were thought to most appropriately represent human well being in each country as they covered areas such as education, the economy, and population. Having established that the HWI indicators were used to determine the general living standards in each country, the facts and figures collected were then used to create an average well being ranking system. This system ranked each country from highest to lowest levels of life quality and human well being. The remainder of this report will include a background on general human well being, a description of each indicator used, the results of the HWI, and finally, an evaluation of its overall effectiveness. Background While there is no universal definition of human well being, it can generally be described as a concept that... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hunger Thirst Fear Transport Selection Fire Chimney Purav Patel Eng 101 Novel Evaluation David Goldstein 11/19/2014 Hunger thirst fear transport selection fire chimney: these words all have intrinsic meaning, but in those times, they meant something else. (Wiesel 2006, p.XII). Night is a novel and an autobiography written by Elie Wiesel in 2006. In this book, Wiesel shares his four years of Horrifying experience at the concentration camps. The main purpose of writing this book is to show the audience how exactly the day to day life of the Jews were at the concentration camps. Two of the main points of this book are Relation and Faith. Wiesel has a good bond with his father that he doesn t lose no matter what circumstances they both went under. Through out the entire book, Wiesel shows his faith in god to the audience. There were times where he doubts in god and almost loses faith in him and humanity but then he continues to have faith in him. The author Elie Wiesel is a Noble prize winner and a teacher born on September 19, 1928 in Sighet, Transylvania. Wiesel wanted to study religion because of his religious background but unfortunately that could not happen because he was sent to the concentration camps at the age of twelve. I chose this book because it was something that I chose it in high school to write a paper on but I could not do it because it did not meet the requirements of the professors of my sophomore and junior year. • 5. Queene Quotes In Queenie Queenie Nelson Mandela once said, No one is born hating another person because of the colour of his skin, or his background, or his religion. Instead, it is the surrounding environment and its people that teach prejudice and discrimination. An example of the transmission of xenophobia from parents to an impressionable child appears in the text, Queenie . Queenie is a prologue to the novel, Small Island by Andrea Levy from 2004. The story takes places in England shortly after World War I. The storyline follows a girl, Queenie, attending the Empire Exhibition with her parents and two employees. She is the protagonist of the story, and the story is written from her point of view with a first person narrator. Therefore, her viewpoints and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This shows that when the mother faces something unknown she immediately pre sumes the worst instead of turning curios and adventurous like Queenie. Graham and Emily, the family s employees, are accompanying the family at the exhibition. They are completely absorbed in each other and seem to consider Queenie as a burden be cause they have to follow her around. During the encounter with the black man Emily and Graham act childish and teasingly push Queenie towards the man, cheering kiss him, kiss him. • 6. Meaning Of Words In Adah s A Silent Vow Has a speech ever been presented that was very meaningful, but was also short and cut straight to the point? The proverb words should be weighed, not counted perfectly shows that. When someone is giving advice, a person doesn t just sit there and count the amount of words that are being said; they pay attention to the message and grasp the concept. This proverb originates from a Yiddish (Jewish) author. It s understandable why he would say something like this because his ancestors went through the Holocaust. They tried explaining how they felt, but no one (especially Hitler) listened to them which caused them to forcefully adapt. Another example, FBLA has planned a fundraiser to sell a product for premature babies. Their item of sale is... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Adah s poem is very revealing. Within the first few lines, the author wrote; But the silence of a pen on a paper is a great sound (Adah). Although using pen and paper could be used to count the words, what the person wrote down made a great sound . It shows that sometimes, people can t just speak their mind; each thought needs to be written out, taking each word into deep consideration. This poem shows that you don t have to speak literal words to get your point across. Tony states, Here I have taken a silent vow and my pen spits liquid pellets on the faces of retreating army (Adah). Without moving a single facial muscle, words that are written down can mean the world to the right person. Fighting battles could be as easy as an arrangement of the alphabet 26 simple letters. Tony s work enhances this proverb by taking a silent vow against stereotypes. Worded better than anyone else could have, Adah says, Here where I am the commander of the silent war and the pen my silent gun (Adah). As the author, commander, of this work of literature; Adah controls the silent gun (pen). He battles the stereotype that one has to openly speak without thinking about what they re saying. Contemplate all expressions; don t argue blindly. A person shouldn t think on their feet . A Silent Vow elaborates on quality over quantity through each line that Tony Adah ... Tears streamed down my face and I covered my face with my hands, sinking to the bathroom floor. Nothing made sense. I looked in the mirror, but it didn t look like me. Did I steal this body from someone? I didn t understand why I was feeling like this. I got myself cleaned up and climbed in bed, not wanting to be conscious of my thoughts anymore. The next morning I got up, put on a skirt and a blouse, and caked my face with makeup. The whole process was very tiring, since it was five in the morning, but I had to do it. If I didn t, I wouldn t fit in with everybody else. So I readied myself for the day and jumped right into the pit of sharks that was high school. This place was my own personal nightmare. I didn t have very many friends to begin with, and my extreme insecurity only made it harder for me to talk to people. I felt wrong constantly. I wasn t even there, really. I just stumbled through my schedule, went home and took off the mask, then broke down and started the process all over again. It was like this day after day. • 11. Analysis Of Corecivic s Politics And The English Language At first glance, CoreCivic strictly adheres to an ideology of acceptance and second chances, and the discourse of their Code of Conduct strongly reflects that. However, on deeper analysis, certain anomalies present themselves, and CoreCivic s apparent ideals begin to shift. Luckily, many of these irregularities can be easily pointed out by applying Orwell s criteria for bad writing from Politics and the English Language , such as misuse or overuse of idioms and vague use of language. While CoreCivic s statements paint a remarkably friendly picture, context paints another. Firstly, nearly every statement made by CoreCivic is unnaturally saturated by honorific words and phrases, oftentimes with as many as four in a single sentence. In conjunction... This kind of language may be great for public image and investor trust, but through the lens of Orwell s analysis of modern language, it becomes far more disingenuous. • 12. Consequences Of The Blue Hotel And Tennessee s Partner All Actions Have Consequences, Sometimes In Stephen Crane s The Blue Hotel and Bret Harte s Tennessee s Partner, many themes are evident; some of these themes are easily recognizable while others depend on the perception of the reader. The stories share the themes of personal integrity and that all actions have consequences. However, there are several themes that are unique to each story that can have a diverse effect on the reader, such as the rules of society to fear of the unknown. The plot and storyline of Tennessee s Partner is straightforward, but after reading the complex, diverse plot and storyline of Crane s The Blue Hotel, one can imagine many different plots that could have taken place throughout the story. Through illusions, the reader can take what each author presents and let his or her imagination do the rest; there is not a set feeling or reaction that the every reader will obtain. In both stories, distinct and diverse motifs are present ranging from personal integrity and all actions have consequences, which are found throughout both stories. The characters Tennessee partner in the story, Tennessee s Partner, have a complicated but strong relationship. At first, we see them as good friends to one another, but later on Tennessee does some unkind things to his partner. However, Tennessee s partner is not upset about this, and upon Tennessee s return, he is the first to greet him and shake his hand. Showing his true integrity Tennessee s partner never holds a grudge on Tennessee. Throughout the rest of the story, Tennessee s partner never downgrades Tennessee for the things he did and stood by his side to the end. Nevertheless, all of the bad choices Tennessee made caught up with him. No matter what Tennessee s partner did, he could not fix the amount of damage Tennessee caused himself. Therefore, all of his bad actions had consequences were well overdue. Comparing, The Blue Hotel, there are similarities, including integrity and all actions have consequences. • 13. Behavior Disorders And Attention Deficit Hyperactivity... Behavior disorder is defined as Any of various forms of behavior that are considered inappropriate by members of the social group to which an individual belongs. (The American Heritage Stedman s Medical Dictionary, 2015) Due to its broad definition, methods of identification, diagnosis, and treatments are varied and controversial. After my son was diagnosed with Sensory Processing Disorder and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in November of 2012, I recognized a stigma within the community surrounding behavior disorders that made it difficult to find the appropriate support for my son and my family. This paper will discuss the causes of behavior disorders, methods for proper identification, and problems that can arise in the home, school, and community of a child with a behavior disorder. Behavior disorders vary in symptoms and name, and can be divided into several classifications, including anxiety disorders, disruptive behavior disorders, emotional disorders, dissociative disorders, and pervasive developmental disorders. In addition to Sensory Processing Disorder and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Bipolar Disorder and Autism fall under the behavior umbrella. Like many other mental illnesses, direct causes of these disorders are hard to pinpoint. Although the exact cause of most mental illnesses is not known, it is becoming clear through research that many of these conditions are caused by a combination of biological, psychological and ... In order to fulfill my Teacher Work Sample assignment, I created a phonetic based instructional unit, The Foundations of Reading, for a level one through three, adult ESL class. I completed this in accordance with the following guiding learning goals: 1. Students will identify the letters and sounds of the English alphabet, 2. Students will recognize consonants and vowels, and 3. Students will learn short and long vowel sounds. Upon completion of the unit, and after reviewing student pre and post test scores, it became evident that the goal my students made the most improvement in was goal number two; Students will recognize consonants and vowels. Students achieved an average, combined score, on the Vowels and Consonants Pre test, of 88 percent. After receiving the corresponding instruction in this area, their combined average score improved eight percent to 96 percent. In analyzing this result, I believe there are two plausible reasons. B.1.a. One reason for the students success with this second goal may actually be the instruction they attained in pursuing the first goal Students will identify the letters and sounds of the English alphabet. While addressing the letters and most common phonetic sounds of the English alphabet, (including short vowels sounds) in lessons two and three, incidental discussions occurred regarding the vowels themselves, due to students curiosity, prior knowledge and the changeable nature of English vowels phonetic representations. ... • 15. Co2 Into Methanol Essay CO2 is one of the biggest problem our planet currently faces. Scientists around the world are racing to find a solution that will help us deal with the excessive Carbon Dioxide in our atmosphere. CO2 is at its highest levels in millions of years. And without a solution these conditions will not change to acceptable levels anytime soon. There are several research projects currently tackling this issue. Some have found methods to convert CO2 into methanol, or hydrocarbon fuel. But these are not very useful at this time. Other attempts have produced products that are either too expensive or not scalable. There is even a team in Iceland trying to turn CO2 into solid rock which can then be buried. But this method has not be fully proven as yet, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Adam Rondinone, an author of the study, explained to Popular Mechanics. It also only requires 1.2 volts of electricity, and yields over 60% of CO2 into Ethanol. These results were possible because the catalyst s nanostructure was easy to change, this, according to the researchers. In a press release, Dr. Rondinone said this system is effectively reversing the combustion process. Explaining that it is very difficult to produce ethanol from carbon dioxide with one catalyst. Because of how cheap the materials involved are, and very low electricity requirements, this method can easily be scaled to meet global needs. The team at Oak Ridge did say this is not a ready to use solution for global CO2 reduction. More development using this system will need to be made in order to have a scalable program in place. The Automotive Industry can benefit greatly from this innovation, and we can easily say it will be a big deal for other fuel consuming industries. In the US we are currently blending over 10% of gasoline with ethanol. Just because it is no longer visible it doesn t mean that the car is no longer existent. It is the same with our thoughts and memories. Once we think or experience something it becomes stored in our minds. This is then what begins to dictate the way in which we carry out our lives. Our minds are continuously working and our personal unconscious allows us to store information and experiences that can either be retrieved or unconsciously applied. The personal unconscious, therefore, is distinguished by the fact that the materials contained in this layer are of a personal nature in so far as they have the character partly of acquisitions derived from the individual s life and partly of psychological factors which could just as well be conscious (494). Not only is the personal unconscious different for each individual, it can easily be recalled or conscious. This is what separates the personal conscious from the collective unconscious. The collective unconscious is the part of the unconscious that was never conscious before. Therefore, the contents of the collective unconscious have never been in consciousness, and therefore have never been individually acquired, but owe their existence exclusively to heredity (C. Immanuel Kant On Moral Education Paper One: Kant on Moral Education Jennifer Penkov: 1345217 Phil 444, Dr Alan McLuckie Friday, February 12, 2016 Word Count: 1, 567 This paper will focus on Kant s account of a moral education as found in his Lectures on Pedagogy. It will begin by discussing why Kant believed that education, specifically moral education, is necessary for a human being to realize her Bestimmung (destiny), but not necessary for non rational animals to reach their natural vocations. It will analyze the role a moral education (the general development of morality) plays in becoming human and will continue by outlining the structure and key points of Kant s hypothetical moral educational system. Finally this paper will highlight possible conflict between education and autonomy (a concept vital to his broader moral philosophy) but will ultimately argue that moral education is compatible with the notion of the intelligible self. Kant makes it explicit in his work that the human being is the only creature that requires education to reach its natural destiny. In order to fully make sense of this notion, it is first necessary to briefly discuss the twofold nature of the human self as explained in Critique of Pure Reason and developed in Groundwork for the Metaphysics of Morals. The human being is thought of as participating in both the empirical and intelligible realms. The empirical self is sensual and determined, in that it participates in the natural world and is governed by the laws of nature ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The World s Population Will Face A Severe Shortage Of Water Case Summary According to research conducted by the United Nations, approximately two thirds of the world s population will face a severe shortage of water by 2025(Shaw Barry, 2014, pg. 131). Some countries have begun to prepare early by importing tankers of water from other countries. The State of Michigan; however, is not as concerned about the shortage due to having over 11,000 lakes including the Great Lakes. Due to the vast amount of water sources, Nestle has built a bottled water plant in Mecosta County, Michigan. The new plant has cost Nestle over 100 million dollars and has caused much controversy with locals. Nestle had built a 12 mile pipeline from the plant to a local spring. Many organizations in Michigan saw this as a huge threat to water conservation and later had resorted to suing Nestle. Lawyers from organizations such as, Michigan s Citizens for Water Conservation and Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians had claimed that due to reasonable use and a treaty from 1836, the land was protected from misuse of transportation of water. Michigan state judge, Lawrence Root, had bought the argument and had upheld the lawsuit. Ruling that the environment is at risk no matter how much water Nestle draws out, he ordered the pumps turned off (Barry, 2014, pg. 132). Uncontrollable as they may seem, our natural inclinations and mental faculties have actually effected immense social change on both a physical and mental level. As oxymoronic as it may seem, it is ultimately our innate passions that both drive conflict and allow for cooperative endeavor, and Thomas Hobbes s masterful 17th century work Leviathancaptures this point beautifully. His passions are a kind of internal motion related to one s will and encompass character traits, moods, or ephemeral states of being such as sudden glory causing laughter. Far from perfect. Our passions do not even come close to fitting us in the perfect world. In fact, they prevent its existence. The nature of man then is one of passions and thusly, one of war. According to Hobbes, the nature of war consisteth not in actual fighting, but in the known disposition thereto during all the time there is no assurance to the contrary. (13) War is not a state of fighting, it is a state of being; specifically a state of being in which safety and protection of one s life or happiness are close to non existent. Coupled with the very real ideas of exhaustible resources and the will to survive, this war or natural world is then populated by beasts unreasoned beings dominated by their psyches and unable to coexist in a society. Hobbes concluded that in the nature of man, we find three principal causes of quarrel. First, competition; secondly, diffidence; thirdly, glory. () These three passions are at once dangerous to the natural world, but necessary for the artificial world to exist. The competition to which Hobbes speaks is a competition for power. In his observations, it is the powerful that are happy and can assure their continued felicity. Thus, competition begets violence. Diffidence implies the defense of oneself and your well being in fear of it being stripped of you. Diffidence seems to beget violence as well. And glory begets the most violence. Cover fallow areas of the garden or future garden patches with garden cloth or black plastic; lay down a layer of mulch, and cover the mulch with plastic. Weight it down well. The mulch and plastic will kill the weeds in the future gardening area; containing the mulch as the filling in a plastic sandwich allows the gardener the ability to lift away incompletely rotted material without excessive handling. This is especially important for individuals with mold allergies. As autumn approaches and the nights grow longer and colder, assess the plants still growing in the garden. Salad beds and even tomato plants can be made to grow a little longer if surrounded by square hay bales topped with a plastic window . This creates an impromptu cold frame.
