INTRODUCTION
Todd Whitaker is a
great educationist, Phd
Professor at Indiana State
University, USA. Has
written many books on
education and participated
in many research studies
on effectiveness of School
Principals, Teachers,
students and also work as a
consultant in more than 50
schools in the state, US.
1. WHY LOOK AT GREAT?
•We learn from anyone.
(Effective people and Ineffective people)
Good teachers knows:
1. Not to use Sarcasm.
2. Not to yell at kids.
3. Not to argue with teens in front of their friends.
So, we can always gain good ideas from a
successful educator(Great teacher) And
such ideas can’t be learnt from visiting
Classroom of ineffective teacher.
Biggest Challenge-
* In any profession is the ability to self reflect
accurately.
• Those who know how they come across to
others.
• How others receive their behavior more
effectively.
We all struggle to achieve this self
awareness, but all too often we fall
short
What skills will educator need if they
are to be effective in this century?
Answers:……
1. Language Proficiency
2. Understanding of Computer and Technology.
3. Master in lifting students high standards.
4. Good communication skills
Wrong
Approach
For all teachers to be like the best
teacher needs:
Do their jobs, Do them well
Day after Day
Year after Year
Decade after Decade
So, that their students are confident to face future.
“ This is my 38 years teaching fifth grade, but
for these students, it’s the first time around.”
To bear one new experiences every day.
2. It’s People, Not Programs
1. Quality of a teacher determines our
perception of the quality of school.
a. Get a better Teacher
Or
b. Improve the current Teacher
“It is never about program,
it is always about people.”
2. It’s not what you do, It’s how you do it.
a. Debate over Praise and Reward for students.
“ Some of our best teachers praise / or reward
their students, but so do some of our least
effective teachers.”
So, it’s not what you do, Its how
appropriately and effectively you
do it”.
3. The power of Expectations
• For Classroom management:
- Great teachers focus on
expectations,
- Other teachers focus on rules,
- Least effective teachers focus
on consequences of breaking
the rules.
Expectations:
• Be respectful Respect yourself
• Be prepared or Respect others
• Be on time Respect your school
“ Great teachers establish clear
expectation at the start of the year and
follow them consistently as the year
progresses.”
4. If you say something, mean it.
1. Do that again and you’re fired.
2. You are grounded for a month etc.
“ When inappropriate behavior occurs,
we should give ourselves time to think
before we react.”
5. Prevention v/s Revenge
• When a student misbehaves.
• Sending students to the office.
*When a student misbehaves, Great
teachers have one goal: to keep that
behavior from happening again.
6. High expectation-for whom?
- Are high expectation important?
* Great teachers have high
expectation from students, but have
even higher expectations for
themselves.
7. Who is the variable in the Classroom?
What if the students do poorly?
a. The Predictable answer: Herself
b. Predictable answers:
i. Kids
ii. Parents
iii. Administration
iv. Last year’s teacher
v. Drugs
How to deal with the demand of others?
1. Ten Days Out of Ten
How we make our teaching effective?
1. The Power of praise
2. Five Strategies that help praise
work.
3. Too much nice.
“ Great teachers create a
positive atmosphere in their
classrooms and schools. They
treat every person with respect.
They understand the power of
praise”
2. Be The Filter
1. Impact of an effective teacher.
2. Perception can become reality.
“ Great teachers consistently filter out
the negatives that don’t matter and
share a positive attitude.”
3. Don’t need to repair-Always
do repair.
1. Some never need to repair- but always do.
2. I am sorry that happened.
“ Great teachers work hard to
keep their relationship in good
repair to avoid personal hurt
and to repair any possible
damage.”
4. The Ability to Ignore
1. Ignore minor errors.
2. Understand the high achievers.
“ Great teachers have the ability to
ignore trivial disturbances and the
ability to respond to inappropriate
behavior without escalating the
situation.”
1. Random or Plandom?
Great teachers have a plan and purpose
for everything they do.
a. Why does Jimmy always pick Billy?
b. The Whole- School Assembly.
c. The faculty Meeting
2. Base Every Decision on the Best
People.
Great teachers make decisions following
three simple guidelines-
a. What is the purpose?
b. Will this actually accomplish the purpose?
c. What will the best people think?
What will the best students
think?
An incident to narrate………………
The Teacher’s Pet ……………..
“Nurture the superstar students you
have, and work to cultivate others”.
3. Put yourself in their
Position.
Model the behavior you expect
from students…….
4. Make it Cool to Care.
Having a cool classroom.
The great Teacher does things
differently.
THANK YOU
FOR
LISTENING
PATIENTLY
