                                              Sensory Memory1
                                              Purpose
                                              Sensory memory is the first “level” of memory. Your brain takes
                                              a temporary “snapshot” of all information coming in via your
                                              senses – e.g., sight, sound, touch, etc. Your sensory memory
                                              “captures” that information.

           Capacity
           Your brain can take in a lot of information. The capacity of your sensory memory
           is unlimited – it captures millions of pieces of information daily.

           Duration
           This “snapshot” only lasts a few seconds before it is replaced with more incoming
           sensory information.

           Transfer of Information
           Of the millions of pieces of sensory information you receive daily, the only
           information that will move into the next level of memory (working memory) are
           those pieces of information that we pay attention to – the rest vanishes. Factors
           that influence what we pay attention to include:

                        Learning styles: We are more likely to process information received in our
                        preferred learning style (e.g., visual, auditory).

                        Encoding processes: Research also says that we move information from
                        sensory memory into working memory (the next level of memory) through
                        the use of two “encoding” processes:
                              Selective attention occurs when you notice – pay attention to –
                              important information that meets your needs or interests. In other
                              words, you pay attention to information that is relevant and you are
                              likely to discard what is not relevant.

           Feature extraction occurs when you consider things as unusual or “out of the
           ordinary.” In other words, you pay attention to things that are novel or unexpected.
