Theories About Memory
~ S. Joy Fox, Psy.D.
(1968 Atkinson-Shiffrin ~ Information-Processing Model or Multi-Store Model)
Sensory – Short-term – Long-term
(Craik & Tulving, 1975) ~ Levels-of-Processing Model
(Baddeley & Hitch, 1974) ~ Multi-Component Model of Working Memory
(Broadbent, 1958) ~ Filter Theory of Selective Attention
(Treisman & Gelade, 1980) ~ Feature-Integration Theory
Memory ~~ Storage Models
(1968 Atkinson-Shiffrin ~ Information-Processing Model or Multi-Store Model)
 SensorySensory (SM)
 Short-termShort-term (STM)
 Long-termLong-term (LTM)
Sensory Memory
~ 'snapshot' of our environment ~
 Ionic (visual) – image stimulus (less than a second)
 color, shape, size
 Echoic (aural) – sound stimulus (2-3 seconds after heard)
 Haptic (touch) – 2 seconds duration
 tactile impression of object after touching it
Short-Term Memory
7 +/- 2 rule (Miller, 1956)
Memory tricks to increase this
 Chunking / closure ~ State-dependent learning
 555-555-5555 phone numbers ~ elaborate rehearsal
 Rhythm spelling ~ mnemonics ~ acrostic ~
Filtered and accepted by attention to them
 Manipulate & process information
 Cocktail effect – attenuate to your name in a crowded room
Interference disturbs process
 Proactive Interference: Difficulty in learning new information because of already existing information
 Retroactive Interference: A person has difficulty recalling old information because of newly learned information
Long-Term Memory
Hippocampus encodes STM into LTM
Secondary=recent and remote LTM memory
Recent memory most vulnerable to aging process
DeclarativeDeclarative or Explicit memory: (conscious)
 Autobiographical memory: ~ Use hippocampus & frontal lobes
 Semantic: president’s name; word meanings
 Episodic: last anniversary; the time you won a medal
 Flashbulb memory (emotional etching in memory of event)
ProceduralProcedural, rote or Implicit memory: (unconscious)
~ Use basal ganglia & cerebellum
 Riding bicycle; playing an instrument
 “Priming” is accessing the most used neuro-pathways
(automatic)
ProspectiveProspective – remembering to remember; future
Levels-of-Processing Model
(Craik & Tulving, 1975)
 Depth of Processing
 Structural – ex: is the word in capitals?
 Phonemic – ex: what does it rhyme with?
 Semantic – ex: meaning (deepest level & greatest
amt. of recall)
Multi-Component Model of
Working Memory
(Baddeley & Hitch, 1974)
Three Systems under the Central ExecutiveCentral Executive
attentional control; directs attention to tasks
 Phonological loop – auditory storage
 Visuo-spatial sketchpad – visual & spatial storage
 Episodic buffer – integrates
Filter Theory of
Selective Attention
(Broadbent, 1958)
The sensory register receives & maintains for a brief
time, two sensory stimuli which are initially presented at
same time: 7-4-3 in right ear/ 8-2-6 in left ear
A filter selects one of the stimuli to pass through a limited
sensory channel based on its physical characteristics while
the other stimulus is held in a temporary buffer for later
processing
The stimulus that passed through the channel to short term
memory is processed for meaning and comes into conscious
awareness
 The information was remembered as 743-826, indicating
processing based upon physical location characteristicslocation
of sound, in this experiment
Feature-Integration Theory
(Treisman & Gelade, 1980)
Two stages
 Pre-attentive stage – basic features of object like size,
shape, color, or orientation are perceived in parallel at
an automatic or subconscious level
 Attentive stage – Features processed serially to form
coherent whole
 Once integrated, continues to be perceived & stored in
memory as a unitary object
 Over time, can decay and become disintegrated again
