Introduction:
In this Web Quest, you will be learning about all the different types of chemical bonds. Then,
you will have to answer questions about chemical bonds while searching the websites provided
for you.
Chemical bonds are all around us. They are in the air we breathe (O2), the water we drink (H2O),
and food we eat (NaCl). The four main bonds include: covalent, polar covalent, ionic, and
metallic.
Task:
In groups of 2, answer the following questions based on chemical bonds.
1. In a covalent bond, what is the behavior of the electrons? Ionic bond? Metallic bond?
2. What two types of elements make up a covalent bond? Ionic bond? Metallic bond?
3. List 4 properties of covalent bonds.
4. What makes a compound polar or nonpolar?
5. Draw the electronegativity charge for each element on water.
6. In a double bond, how many electrons are being shared?
7. What is the name of the compound that sodium and chlorine creates? What type of bond
occurs?
8. Is an ionic bond or a covalent bond stronger?
9. In a metallic bond, where are the electrons located?
10. Draw Lewis Dot Structures for H, B, O, Ne, Mg, Si, K, and Xe.
