Waste is a problem because it spreads diseases and pollutes the environment. Garbage dumps attract animals and insects that spread germs, while rain washes chemicals from garbage into soil and underground water supplies. Burning garbage also pollutes the air. We can reduce waste by refusing unnecessary purchases, reducing packaging used, reusing materials whenever possible, and recycling items like paper, glass, plastic and aluminum cans which can be melted down and made into new reusable products.
