2. Reduce
Reduce/Reduction: to make something
smaller or use less, resulting in a
smaller amount of waste. "Source
reduction" is reducing waste before you
purchase it, or by purchasing products
that are not wasteful in their packaging
or use. A key part of waste "reduction" is
"conservation" - using natural resources
wisely, and using less than usual in
order avoid waste.
3. Reuse
You can "reuse" materials in their original form instead of
throwing them away, or pass those materials on to others who
could use them too! Remember, one man's trash is another
man's treasure!
4. Recycle
Recycling occurs when you save and take
reusable materials to places where they can
be remade into either the same product or
new products, rather than to just toss them in
the trash. Making new items from recycled
ones also takes fewer energy and other
resources than making products from brand
new materials.
5. Don't throw away anything that can be recycled!
Here is a list of things you should always recycle
Acid Batteries
Plastic Bottles
Steel Cans
Tires
White Goods (Appliances)
Wood
Writing/Copy Paper
Yard Waste
Aluminum Cans
Building Materials
Cardboard
Chemicals
Electronic equipment
Glass (particularly bottles and jars)
Lead
Magazines
Metal
6. Easier - Recycle means to process old, used items in order that the material
can be used to make new products. Examples of things that are often recycled
are glass, plastic, newspapers, aluminum cans, used motor oil, and batteries.
Here, reduce refers to lessening the amount of items or resources that are
consumed, using only the amount that is needed, and looking for alternatives
that will lessen our use. And reuse means extending the 'life' or repurposing an
item rather than discarding or throwing it away.
Harder - Recycling is the processes of collecting, processing, remanufacturing,
and reusing materials instead of discarding them. This helps conserve raw
materials and energy that manufacturers would otherwise use in producing new
products. Recycling also reduces the amount of material going into landfills.
Recycling helps lessen the pollution that may result from waste disposal.
Reducing our consumption of materials and reducing the waste of materials
also adds to the conservation of our resources.
7. When I Recycle I…
Recycling reduces the need for landfills, but it also
does much more. By recycling, you are conserving
natural resources, such as trees, metal ores,
minerals, oil, and water. You are also reducing the
amount of pollution and greenhouse gases released
into the environment, and you are conserving
energy. Recycling can be fun and easy, and by
recycling, you are helping yourself and your
community, and you are setting a good example at
the same time.
8. How can young children learn to care for
Earth?
One of the ways:
Art & crafts experiences enable children to acquaint
themselves with the natural qualities of the earth
such as leaves, rocks, shells, dirt, wind, rain and
sunshine. Children also learn to observe, create,
and remain in touch with the ever changing world,
and to develop a caring attitude towards the earth by
learning to recycle and use materials for art and
crafts rather than throwing them away.
10. Reuse,Reduce & Recycle
Recycle: We should not throw cans, bottles and newspapers into
landfills. These items can be recycled. Don't throw those shoe boxes
away -- they can become toy dioramas or doll houses. Discuss how
these items get recycled.
Reuse: We don't always need a new piece of paper or a new t-shirt.
We can try to reuse what we already have. We can help keep trash
out of the landfills. How can a piece of paper be reused? Example:
We can use the comics to use as wrapping paper, print the templates
in this web site on the blank/clean side of junk mail or other discarded
paper material. How can a T-shirt be reused - many pieces of fabric
from T-shirts can make a great quilt!
Reduce - Every home can reduce the amount of waste/garbage it
produces and the landfills would last years longer. Composting is one
way of reducing -- explain how you can help and/or are helping to
reduce.
11. Facts About Recycling Paper for Kids
Paper is made from crushing trees into wood pulp. It
takes 98 tons of resources to make just one ton of
paper. Trees are important to the environment and
take years to grow back. Everyone is part of the
solution. Kids making the first step to change may
create the difference in an entire family making a
positive change to save the environment. There are
a few easy steps kids can take today to make a
difference in their homes and make a better
tomorrow.
