A Visitor Statistics of Saint Catherine World Heritage Area Pre nomination, the site of the Saint
Catherine monastery as a part of the protectorate area of Saint Catherine receives about 750 to
1000 visitors per day that has been recognized (Nomination File, 2002). In fact, the visitor
numbers to the St. Catherine WH area is notably duplicated from 150000.00 to 300000.00 from
1996 to 2002, this 100.0 per cent increase rate may cope with the tremendous gross of the visitor
number in Sharm El Sheikh (EEAA, 2004). Post nomination, the numbers have fluctuated between
284000.00 to 448000.00 visitors per year from 2003 until 2010 (EEAA, Sector, N. C. St.

The Education Of Higher Education
Institutions of higher learning compete amongst each other, enabling them to focus on subjects that
do not pertain to education. The education system has become more of a business organization,
making learning their second priority and further shifting their focus from the quality of education
and students to the quantity of students and the popularity of their institution. The economy of the
country has also had a big impact on shaping universities operating systems. American modern
economy is based on knowledge, thus there is an increasing high demand for higher education.
Higher educationhas become a market system, and universities have to change their traditional
structure in order to become a valuable competitor; although education is in demand, the supply of
quality in education is decreasing. Competition among traditional universities and the increase of
for profit schools have diminished the value of higher education. Educational instiutions are
evolving into businesses and primarily focusing on the profit aspect.Education is a very valuable
business, it creates a lot of free cash flow and there is a high rate of educational needs that continue
to grow. In the essay The Sandbox Experiment , by Peter Sacks, the author makes an argument that
professors are placed in situations where they are forced to moderate their course material in order
to please their students(Sacks 1 2). Sacks conducts the Sandbox experiment which demonstrated

Food Stamp Program
The Food Stamp Program, now known as, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, is the
U.S. largest food assistance agency, whose annual budget is $75 billion (U.S. Dept. of Agri.,
2012). SNAP was created in 1969 to help combat hunger and improve the nutrition and health of
low income families. Indeed, the federal government is acting irresponsibly and contributing to
Americas obesity epidemic by allowing SNAP participants to purchase junk food, such as soda;
therefore, sugary based beverages should be eliminated as an acceptable food item, expand
knowledge regarding nutritioneducation and wellness programs and lastly, revise SNAP to meet
current dietary guidelines and restrict unhealthy foods to benefit recipients. Almost half of... Show

Making Things Better At Philips
Making Things Better
A Philips case study
Group Team 2
ParticipantsEmily Henson, Karen Hernandez , Lakshmi Bagare, Ritu Sahai
Introduction This study focuses on the way in which Philips has transformed its organization and
culture in order to flourish in the modern competitive world. Organizations today operate within an
environment of change. As this environment is so dynamic, it is crucial for organizations to
constantly reinvent themselves. It is important, therefore, to continually adapt and move on.
Nowhere is this more true than in the modern business environment, where today s technology
becomes out of date within a short span of time and in which there is intense global competition as
firms jostle for the new huge markets that are opening up. Philips is one of the world s leading
electronics companies. Its products are diverse and range from coffee makers to silicon chips,
from recordings of Mozart s symphonies to cancer screening systems. Philips has been at the
forefront of electronic innovation since 1891, registering some 65,000 patents and has been
responsible for many of this century s greatest, most useful products such as:
Electric Shaver
Audio Cassette
Video Cassette Recorder
Compact Disc
Energy Saving Lamps The 1980s was a significant period for the electronics industry over which
enormous changes took place worldwide. These included: A period of high growth for the

Identify five (5) Diagnostic tests that would be performed on Mr Bellows. Explain the indicators
for the test and identify normal result values (5 marks)
12 Lead Electrocardiogram (ECG) There are typical changes to the normal pattern of the ECG in
a heart attack. Patterns that occur include pathological Q waves and ST elevation (Koutoukidis,
Stainton Hughson 2013, p. 505). However, it is possible to have a normal ECG even if a patient
has had a heart attack. The indicators for this test include: suspected myocardial infarction,
suspected pulmonary embolism, perceived cardiac dysrhythmias, fainting or collapse, a third heart
sound, fourth heart sound, a cardiac murmur or other findings to indicate structural heart disease.

Describe two complication of Acute Myocardial Infarction. (2 marks)
One of the complications of an acute MI is Left Ventricular Aneurysm (LVA) which is a localized
area of myocardium with abnormal outward bulging and deformation during systole and diastole.
The epidemiology occurs in 10 30% of patients after an acute MI (American Heart Association
2015). The risk factors include total occlusion of the LAD artery, females and an anterior MI. To
prevent this, early revascularization is needed. The LVAs usually range from 1 8 cm.
Pericarditis is another complication of acute MI. The incidence of early pericarditis after a MI is
about 10% (American Heart Association 2015). This is caused by the inflammation of pericardial
tissue which overlies infarcted myocardium. Clinically a patient can present with severe pleuritic
chest pain and pericardial friction rub. Pericarditis usually develops between 24 and 96 hours after
an acute MI. The treatment of this complication is with anti inflammatory drugs and analgesia
(American Heart Association 2015).

Chesapeake Bay Eutrophication
In this paper I will examine multiple perspectives in an attempt to understand the recent
eutrophication of the Chesapeake Bay. Our textbook, Cambell Biology defines eutrophication as a
process in which nutrients, usually phosphorus and nitrogen, are unusually present in a body of
water, leading to algae blooms and accelerated growth. Anoxia is a condition in which areas of
water are severely depleted of dissolved oxygen. Fisher, Hagy, Boynton, and Williams provide a
helpful overview of this phenomenon, focusing their study on the Choptank and Patuxent estuaries
specifically. They note that the Chesapeake has become eutrophic over the last 50 to 100 years and
that systematic monitoring since 1970 has shown a 2 5 fold increase in nitrogen and phosphorus
inputs. They attribute this change to sewage discharges, fertilizer application, atmospheric
depositions, and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Using a model they projected the outcomes of a 10 fold increase in existing oyster biomass. This
resulted in a system wide reduction of surface chlorophyll, increased dissolved oxygen in summer
average deep water, and added to summer submerged biomass by removing nitrogen. The influence
on pelagic waters was limited. They recommend this de nitrification method as a supplement to
nutrient load reduction. (Cerco CF, Noel MR. 2007.) All of these articles offer distinct perspective
on the eutrophication and anoxia in the Chesapeake Bay. Growing up in Washington, DC the
Chesapeake bay holds a lot of cultural and environmental significance for myself and my
community. Through these multiple perspectives one is better able to understand the
anthropogenic change that has occurred and continues to persist in the Chesapeake Bay watershed.
And most importantly, one can lean what we as scientists and citizens can do to ensure the health

Rhetorical Analysis Of Is Google Making Us Stupid
Major Paper II:Rhetorical Analysis In the article, Is Google Making Us Stupid , the main
argument the author, Nicholas Carr is trying to make is to explain how the Internet becomes our
only source of information. Carr is also trying to warn oncoming generations in how the Internet
has affected our ability to read long pieces or to be able to retain information for a long period of
time. Carr provides personal experience, imagery, and a professional analysis that is backed by
research to hook the audiencein and persuade them that in today s society, the Internetis only
causing problems rather than any solutions.Throughout the article Carr provides an abundant
amount of rhetorical modes by giving examples and studies from different organizations . Carr
gives an insight on the positive ways the Internet had influenced his life.
The author s tone changes in paragraph 4 when Carr talks about how the Internet has altered his
mind by crumbling away at how much he can concrete. When Carr states For me, as for others, the
Net is becoming a universal medium in paragraph four the author provides his counter argument
which is to warn the incoming generations the dangers of the Internet before his main argument.
Which is that the Internet is making us stupid and is altering how we think, by doing this it allows
Carr to spend the rest of the article refuting his main argument.
In order to move along his argument the first thing Carr does is share a problem with the

Examples Of Archetypes In The Lamb By William Blake
True Meaning
(A discussion on Blake s Archetypes)
An archetype is defined as a recurrent symbol in literature, art, and mythology. Usually an
archetype is a character in a story that represents such universal patterns of human nature.
William Blake is a poet and an artist during the 1800 s who used archetypes in many of his writing
s he wrote. Blake published two books of poems, one being called Songs of Innocence, and Songs
of experience, these two books of poems are his most known writings. William Blake uses
archetypes in his four poems The Lamb , The Tyger, The Chimney Sweeper , and Infant Sorrow .
In The Lamb , the lamb is the archetype that symbolizes as cute and sweet. In the poem Blake s
describes the lamb as softest clothing of delight . He explains the lambs wool as soft and
elegant. Blake talks about the lambs sound explaining Gave thee such a tender voice, making all
the vales rejoice. Blake explains that the lambs noise can make the most depressed valley s happy
with joy. The lamb is symbolized as sweet an innocent. Blake decided that the lamb is one of God s
great creations.
In The Tyger Blake uses the tyger as an archetype of power. Tigers in the real world today are the
biggest killing/hunting machines, and they never let anything get in their way. Tigers want all
the power. Blake explains What immortal hand or eye, could frame thy fearful symmetry? . He
uses the word fearful in that sentence to describe the tigers face. He also used the word could in
the quote above, but also restates the statement using dare instead of could. Blake is trying to
get at how could someone make something so destructive and demanding. Blake uses fire to
describe the tiger several times. For example, In what distant deeps or skies burnt the fire of
thine eyes. Blake s uses fire to describe the tiger because they share similar qualities, such as
being deadly and harmful to many living things. William Blake did a excellent job at explaining
how a tiger is a good archetype for power.
In The Chimney Sweeper uses archetypes to represent faith. Blake is able to use these chimney
sweepers as a good archetype for faith because they often go through very hard lives. When my
mother died I

The New Black
The speech I attended was a panel of women who had all previously been to prison. This panel
was particularly interesting because these women were the inspiration for the television series
Orange is the New Black. The Netflix original series is based on Piper Kerman s book of the same
name. The book was based on her experience in the womens prisonDanbury, which is located in
Connecticut. Piper wrote about her personal story and the stories of many of the women she
interacted with. Several of these very women came to Suffolk University to give a talk on their
own personal experience in the prison system and their thoughts on the television series. There
were four women who spoke to us, two of whom were in prison with Piper, one who attended the
same prison at a different time, and one women who was a professor at Suffolk University and had
never been to prison. Each womanspoke about her own personal experience with the prison system
and they all spoke about the issues surrounding the United States legal system. They also all spoke
about the problems with America s glorification of the prison system, especially in recent years.
The entire speech was very clearly targeted to college students, as each woman spent time
addressing us personally as the next generation who can do something about the faulty legal system.
The entirety of the speech extremely informative and motivated, while also being interesting a
sometimes funny. This speech was interesting in the fact that

Lying on the uncomfortable, terrible, backstabbing prison mattress, I am feeling exhausted. I

me is unbearable and seems to become more and more horrifying as time goes past. As my cracked
lips tremble, Pearl shaped tears slowly drip out of my puffed up eyes and down my frail face, as I
remember that unforgettable moment that happened in a split second. I stare at the damp, dirty
ceiling with my heart completely shattered, trying to think of reasons why I should live. The more I
think about the accident, the more distressed I feel.
Three days earlier on a wintery morning. I walked out of my warm apartment, as the cold breeze
instantly smacked me in the face, even with my woolly, Christmas themed sweater and thick,
quilted coat I was still cold. The sky was washed with grey clouds, as the ground was covered in

BeyoncГ© Knowles is a Grammy Award winning, multi platinum R B musician who is commended

In addition to fornication and reconciliation, Lemonade tells a story that focuses on African
American oppression and women hood. Taking both a political and spiritual approach with the use
of literary elements and techniques, Freedom , featuring Kendrick Lamar, displays a central

His form of writing is a count down from ten to five, foreshadowing that Kendrick is counting
down towards something significant. Ten Hail Mary s I meditate for practice (line 37) is an
allusion to the Catholic prayer, Hail Mary, which is often recited ten times. This is another
spiritual symbol: using God to heal the dilemmas being faced. This line also alludes to Tupac
Shakur s Hail Mary , one who shared the same views on oppression as Beyonce and Lamar. In
lines 38, moving backwards refers to how throughout the first few bars of his verse, Lamar is
literally counting backwards. Line 39 is an allusion to his hometown of Compton and all
neighborhoods in the African American communities affected by high crime rates, murder,
poverty where Eight blocks refers to Section 8 Housing. Lamar states seven misleading
statements about my persona (line 40), alluding to the stereotypical and derogatory terms
associated with being an African American male. Linked with its previous line, Six headlights
(line 41) refers to the six lights on a police car and police brutality on men of color. The
countdown ends at Five O which is slang for police and a metaphor of death. Five O is simply a
symbol of the short lived lives of African Americans at the hands of law enforcement. The
countdown is a diction, suggesting the idea that African Americans are killed in the early stages of

The Long Term Success Of German Discount Grocery Stores
The researcher examined the reasons for the long term success of German discount grocery
stores. German discount grocery stores, such as ALDI, have dominated the German retail food
sector and continue to grow. In many parts of Germany the discount grocers have been so
successful that they are becoming oligopolies. The long term success of the German discount
grocers is related to the price of products, product selection, choice of store location, and size of
new stores. Jurgens gives credit to the creation of discount stores to German discount food giant
ALDI. ALDI has gone through great lengths to standardize its stores and maintain a consistent
area per store. Many of ALDI stores are 500 1000 square meters of retail space with large parking
lots. The location of discount grocers was determined to be in peripheral urban locations, on arterial
roads, or in commercial business parks. Discount grocers were also found to choose locations that
increase their attractiveness in strategic clusters near other complementary retailers.

It is also important to keep accurate record of Liam s fluid balance chart, and assess Liam s

Rapid virological testing for RSV is recommended in order to guide isolation and allocate Liam
into cohorts in hospital (Fitzgerald, 2011).

I don t know about you but that has to take a lot of courage to uncover your deep dark past. This
movie is filled with fear and courage and most of all the help of others.
There is one part in the movie that really made this movie one of the most impactful movies I have
ever seen. He made a poem and presented it to his psychiatrist. It read:
Who will cry for the little boy lost and all alone
Who will cry for the little boy abandoned without his own
Who will cry for the little boy he cried himself to sleep
Who will cry for the little boy who never had for keeps
Who will cry for the little boy who walked a burning sand
Who will cry for the little boy the boy inside the man
Who will cry for the little boy who knew well hurt and pain
Who will cry for the little boy who died and died again
Who will cry for the little boy a good boy he tried to be
Who will cry for the little boy who cries inside of me
This poem has a true meaning behind it. The meaning of it is of Antwone when he was little. He
would cry himself to sleep. He would get beaten over an over again. It just kept building up and
finally he cried for help on the inside. Luckily he got help from his psychiatrist before it was too
late. The last quote from the movie that made it such an impactful movie was, You are the champ,
you have beaten everyone who has beaten you In the end I think that Antwone Fisher is the most
impacting movie someone will ever see. Throughout

Portugal And Brazil Essay
Both Brazil and Portugal share an intense bond with Africa. Portugal held African colonies since the
era of overseas exploration. The first violent occupation from the Portuguese took place in Ceuta in
1415, in the north of the African continent, however, the real discovery of the continent took place
little over the 15th century, expanding also to the Latin America (Brazil) and Asia (China and India).
In the 17th century, the British, French and Deutsch expelled the Portuguese from the best coastal
areas in order to pursue the slave trade. Portugaland Spain kept some of the old colonies like
Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau, Mozambique, and SГЈo TomГ© e PrГncipe. Portugal sent

With the end of the war and the independence of these countries in 1975, the white Portuguese
colonizers, who had built their life in African territory, had to return. This exodus was called The
Returned although, this word was received with discontent, being a taboo to this day. Some of
the people returning from the African colonies, had not been in Portugal for many years or were
second, third generation, so the term Returned is not as well accepted for those who had never
stepped foot in Portuguese soil. However, what many people may not know, is that the first wave
of the Returned were in fact black Portuguese, who were looking for a new way of life, many of

Federalist 10 Analysis
The question that is dispatched in the Federalist paper # 10 that James Madison has written is
how to protect the country against factions? A faction is a group of people with the same interest
opposed to the rights of the citizens or the interests opposed to the rights of the citizens or the
interest of the whole community. The paper is also written on how a strong republic would protect
better against the dangers then a smaller one for example, an individual state. Madison explains
that in a large republic there will be many different factions, held together by regional or local
interests that none of them will dominate national politics, it is important to devise a plan of
governmentthat can control the instability, injustice, and confusion... Show more content on

Madison believes it is a process or aftereffect of people being born with very different physical
and mental capacities. In order try to remove the causes of faction are only two options: destroy
free will by taking away the opinion of every citizen, passions and interests. The first won t work
because we have fought long and hard for freedom. The second is not fascinating nor even
possible. By factions, whether amounting to a largest of a minority of the whole faction. Who
are untied and actuated by some common impulse of passion or of interest, opposing of the
rights of other citizens, or to the durable and collective interests of the community? There are a
few things bad about faction one of those things are they will try to get they want even if it hurts
others. Madison wants to create a republic. Two ways to remove factions are to destroy liberty so
we can t take it away again that s why destroying liberty won t work. The system does not work
today because people can have better communication around so they can have the same interests
around the country. The point of the Federalist papers was to promote the ratification of the
constitution. Madison believed that factions operate in their own interest and ignore the rights of
other citizens and interest of the community. Madison believes that as long as man is allowed to

The Battle of Hastings Led by William of Normandy
The Battle of Hastings took place in October of the year 1066. It was fought between the
Normans (French) and the Anglo Saxons (English). The English were led by Harold II, while
the French were led by William of Normandy. William of Normandy made some key decisions in
the battle that allowed his army to defeat the English. William of Normandy followed Sun Tzu s
Art of War and because of the he went on to win the battle. William of Normandy won the battle
by following Sun Tzu s teachings of Weak points Strong, Strategy and tactics, and leading by
example. William of Normandy used Sun Tzu s tactic of attacking the enemy s weakness while
avoiding the enemy s strength. According to Sun Tzu Art of War When Strong, avoid them. If of
high morale, depress them. Seem humble to fill when conceit. If at ease, exhaust them. If united
separate them. Attack their weaknesses. Emerge to their surprise. The previous quote tells us to
stay away from enemy who is strong, and if they are strong, make them weak. Then once they are
weak attack them and exploit their weaknesses. William of Normandy demonstrated this tactic
very well. He exploited the strong shield wall of the Anglo Saxons by retreating his army.
Although it may seem counterintuitive as the French retreated the Shield Wall broke as the Saxons
charged at their opponent. The now vulnerable Saxon Army was wiped out by William s cavalry.
William of Normandy successfully used Sun Tzu s tactic of attacking the enemy s weakness

The Bureaucracy Of The Business World Of Greece
The bureaucracy found in the business world of Greece makes it even more difficult for innovation
to exist, according to the article: bureaucracy, laws, and rules exert particular influence in Greece
because they help make life more structured and less uncertain. In Greece, acquiring construction
permits, registering property, and enforcing contracts in courts require vast amounts of paperwork
and time. Thus, the rules which are in place to prevent uncertaintyin Greek businesses also inhibits
innovation which is already unlikely to occur because of the avoidance of uncertainty already
prevalent in Greek culture..

It could be argued, however, that American business writers are judging Greece s economy based
on their own ideas of how business is done. They may say that it is merely a coincidence that
Greece is struggling and happens to avoid uncertainty. It would be impossible to say that their
struggles are because of their tendencies to avoid uncertainty, but the weight of the previous
information given in this paper outlines the role uncertainty does play in the American corporate

This is not the only argument to be made, however. The article from the Harvard Business Review

Japan And Japanese Culture
Japan is an East Asian Island country with a distinct cultural identity. Samurai values, kimono
clothing, Noh Theater, woodblock art, and sumo wrestling are among the many instantly
identifiable aspects of Japan s culture. Many of Japan s cultures have developed through centuries
of feudal rule and has benefited from the country s geographic isolation.
Japan put in place a policy of national seclusion for hundreds of years until the 1850s, but it
succumbed to an imperialist power by the end of the 19th century. The culture of Japan was spread
internationally through occupation in military campaigns before World War II. Japan then
reinvented itself after the war and began to flourish economically. Japanese influence spread not by
militarist might, but through economic integration with much of the international community in
the last part of the 20th century (Encyclopedia Britannica Online, Japan, 2011).
East of the Asian mainland, Japan is a country of mountainous volcanic islands and intermittent
valleys situated in the western Pacific Ocean. Japan has four main islands, the biggest is Honshu,
which contributes to sixty percent of the nations total land area and eighty percent of the entire
population. Some of the other major islands of Japan include Hokkaido, Kyushu, and Shikoku.
Lying south of the main islands are the Ryukyu Islands, including Okinawa. With a land area
totaling 377,835 sq km (145,902 sq mi), Japan is a fraction smaller than California. Neighboring

evaluate use by multiple users outside a laboratory environment. In particular, an important future
direction is to remove the dependency on cables and extraneous equipment for what is supposed to

Comparison s The Trolley Problem By Judith Jarvis Thomson
The article, The Trolley Problem , written by Judith Jarvis Thomson, poses an intense ethical
argument. Within the reading, she addresses two of Philippa Foot s imaginary situations. The
first involves a trolley with faulty brakes, and if the driver should flip the switch to kill five
people or just one person. The second is a similar situation; should a doctor let five patients die or
operate on one patient to take his organs without consent? I will argue that it is not morally
permissible to turn the trolley or to operate without consent. This article starts with an interesting
scenario. A trolley is speeding down its tracks. As the trolley is coming around a turn, the driver
sees five men working on the tracks. Luckily, the driver of the trolley has the option to flip a
switch to make the trolley turn to the right onto a separate section of the tracks. It is not that simple,
though. On the right spur of the tracks, one man is working. Philippa Foothas arranged that no
matter which way the driver turns, it would be impossible for the workmen to get off the track
safely and on time to avoid being run down by the trolley (Thomson 1395). As a first instinct, the
driver tries to slam on the trolley s brakes to avoid hitting any of the workmen. Unfortunately, the
brakes on the trolley do not work. Thus, the driver is left facing this situation: should he continue
going straight or should he quickly turn the trolley to the right? If he stays straight, he will
continue hurdling towards the five helpless workmen, inevitably hitting and killing all five of
them. If he flips to switch to turn the trolley right, the driver will undoubtedly hit the lone
workman and take his life (Thomson 1395). Now here is the real catch of the situation: the reader
is the trolley driver. It is up to the reader of this article to decide what route to take. Would the
reader, in the driver s situation, keep the trolley straight, or turn it to the right? Thomson explains
that when she gave such a hypothetical case to several people, the consensus was overwhelmingly
harmonious. Many readers believed that it was morally permissible for you to turn the trolley
(Thomson 1395). Some say that it is completely necessary to turn the

Abstract
Judges are the most prestigious members of the court system, but they are faced with challenges
that reflect upon there ethics, and faithfulness to the people they serve. Often judges make careless
misstates and forget that they are appointed or voted in by the public. Therefore some judges have
been removed from the bench due to their behavior that includes, sexual allegations, taking cash,
making racist and sexist comments, and lying to a grand jury just to name a few. Voters elect some

Many issues may arrive because of this and create problems within the courts. According to Skaggs
(2010) A recent study of the Texas Supreme Court, found that the more money a petitioner
contributed to the justices, the more likely it was that the court would accept a petition for review .
Contributions may show that a judge is in favor of the individual that may give the most money to
there campaign which may give true insight on what kind of judge they will be in the future. In
the past some judges have abused their office because of the lust of their flesh and the pride of
life. Many have given over to the power and prestige of the office instead of walking in humility of
the office of judge.
The article Are Campaign Contributions Compromising The Independent Judiciary also gives
verification that there are issues within our current system today. According to Jefferson People
doubt that a judge who have received campaign contributions from a lawyer will remain neutral
when deciding the donor s case (Jefferson, 2010). People may not really care about the reputation
of a judge but rather look at how much money that particular judge have spent on there campaign.
This type of actions by canadates has affected the public views by decreasing the public
confidence in America s courts. By adopting a system where judges are seeking a judges seat
would eliminate much of the negative response by the people. By focusing on a candidate s work

The Political Interest Of Madagascar
Madagascar has always been of great political interest to many countries and governments. It
seems a suitable island that is out of the way, but it is in the centre of everything at the same time.
People are very unsuspecting of it, and it was the same in World War 2 as well...
The Germans and the rest of the Axis had very good reasons for wanting to control Madagascar.
The first is that they were going to use this remote island as a place to deport some of the
remaining 10,000 Jewish refugees still in France that had not been able to find a home in South
Africa or Brazil. The French were not the only ones suffering though; the Polish and the
Germans really need to get the Jews out as well. However like many of the other Nazi ideologies,
it was not a new one. A lot of British, Polish and Dutch anti Semites had been considering the idea
to move the Jews there since as early as 1878.
Luckily for Nazis, Madagascar was under the control and within the empire of Vichy France (the
part of France that had surrendered to Hitler), and according to the surrender terms, France had
to let the Germans into Madagascar as well. It was going to be easy. Not only would it get rid of
the Jews, but it would also help the Axis financially as the Jews were currently surviving on
charity. In May 1936, there was a new French administration voted in, and there was serious talk
of the Jews being moved there, and they even went as far as to investigate the island to check if it
was liable for that

chapters of William Least Heat Moon s book PrairyErth, I have become very interested in the
ways we are harming the planet. I have thought deeply and conducted in depth research into
alternatives for electricity, agriculture and how we affect the environment. Over Thanksgiving, I

Saudi Arabia also faces challenges in fracking their shale oil supplies due to the lack of the fresh
water required for this technique (Zaleski).
I guess, with this evidence, my uncle would have probably said, well then, this further proves
that we don t need electric and hybrid technology. There are too many controversies with
fracking though, at least for me, to accept this as a long term solution. To give you just an
abbreviated idea of some of frackings issues, here is a shortlist. It requires that we pump millions
of gallons of water mixed with tens of thousands of gallons of chemicals into the ground, which
could potentially seep into our drinking water sources. The water used for fracking must remain
in the earth once contaminated for proper disposal. How can we remove this much water from the
natural cycle when there are so many locations already susceptible to drought conditions? This
process has also been causing a multitude of earthquakes in regions that before did not have them.
Another drawback is that during the fracking process methane gas could be and likely is being
leaked into the atmosphere. Methane gas is even worse for the greenhouse effect than the carbon
dioxide we usually worry over (Loki).
I could also see the conversation with my uncle turning to, what would we do with all of the
current fuel burning cars, and won t it take fossil fuels to charge the electric vehicles anyways? My

sort of special weapon. When we first meet Bilbo Baggins he is nothing more than a homely

Good Communication Is Effective Communication
Good communication is effective communication; it provides direction, a clear goal, and
encourages the flow of ideas. Successful communication is achieved through a variety of methods,
but most importantly, it begins with a foundation of security and trust within the team. Successful
Communication
Over the past few weeks my group has been using our group discussion board as our primary
method of communication. Since beginning our power point project we have been posting updates,
questions and simple check ins to see how each member of the group is coming along with their
portion of the PowerPoint assignment. Our key to success has been because of our communication;
this is especially important because we are a virtual group. We touch base with each other regularly
for multiple reasons, the first being the need to establish a relationship.
In contrast to teams who meet face to face on a regular basis, we cannot pick up on non verbal
clues that are expressed through body language, nor are we able to establish an emotional
connection with one another; with that being said, we must maintain regular contact in order to
build a rapport. Secondly, regular communication allowed us to report progress and drawbacks that
may hinder our success. Moreover, scheduling regular periods of communication enforced
accountability by instituting periodic milestones of progress.
In previous experiences I have had working in collaborative groups, in regard to the importance of

The Effects Of Drought On Human Consumption
Throughout the past century many areas of the Western United States have faced agricultural
concerns, many environmental hazards, and economical stressors stemming from severe drought.
According to livescience.com, a drought can be described as a period of unusually dry weather that
persists long enough to cause environmental or economic problems. (Oskin, 2014) Droughts are
natural occurrences that have been happening for hundreds of years, and although their effects
haven t been documented that long, scientists have been able to identify their impacts by using
various research methods. Droughts are fairly complex issues that can have many impacts on
humans as well as be influenced by human interactions with the environment. Negative impacts are
being felt currently in the Western US and are not showing signs of slowing up. Droughtis highly
dependent on human consumption of water be it for agricultural, industrial, or household uses.
There are many issues regarding human consumption of water, but one of the most notable is the
fact that we have very little fresh water available that can be accessed and used by humans.
According to the USGS, about 71% of the Earth s surface is water covered, and the oceans hold
about 96.5% of all Earth s water (Perlman, 2014). This is a pretty humbling statistic, and brings to
light how easily water can become scarce. With less than 3% of the Earth s water being readily
available for consumption, humans do not have much room for waste.

Master Cleanse Research Paper
TThe Master Cleanse: Is it the Real Deal? Ever heard of losing ten pounds in ten days? The
Master Cleanse claims this to be true. The Master Cleanse, also called the Lemonade Diet, is a
liquid only diet consisting of three things: a lemonade like beverage, salt water drink, and herbal
laxative tea. The diet consists of consuming nothing but this lemonade drink for ten days (or
more) and you re supposed to shed weight and detox your digestive system. All in all, the Master
Cleanse is claimed and intended to make people healthier, feel more energetic, and happier.
Beyonce did the Master Cleanse to quickly drop weight to play in Dreamgirls, but the real question

In the words of Maura Shenker, You may also suffer digestive issues because of the constant
flushing of your system, which can damage healthy probiotic bacteria that aid digestion and help
keep your immune system strong (3). This quote justifies the master cleanse could have danger to
your digestive system and normal bodily functions. According to Tina Rubin who wrote Mastering
the Master Cleanse , Detox symptoms include irritability, aches and pains (including caffeine
headaches), lethargy, and eliminations that burn. Many of the symptoms disappear the next day.
After day three, most people experience no more detox symptoms until day seven or eight, and then
it s smooth sailing. Other than on symptom days, people report having unusual energy, strength,
and clarity that continues throughout the cleanse (3). There seems to be a lot of symptoms that go
along with this detoxing diet but seems to possibly be worth it in the long run. It may only do that

History Of Mission San Juan Capistrano
The history of Mission San Juan Capistrano is similar to that of two other nearby missions in that it
was relocated to the San Antonio area from East Texas in 1731. Its purpose was also similar to that
of the other missions, namely to convert Native American groups to Christianity, assimilate them
into Spanish society, and promote settlement in the region. In addition to its early history, the
mission compound itself was constructed in a form typical of other San Antonio area missions,
including a church and plaza surrounded by a defensive wall formed from stone Indian quarters.
The compound included other ancillary structures such as a granary, convent, workshops, and other
storage facilities. Today the complex includes the ruins of the second

Ethnic Identity
To solve this identity crisis, I believe all ethnic groups should stick to their roots and embrace
their unique culture to create a mosaic society. Similar to a mosaic that uses many different
colored glasses to create a beautiful piece of art, people should value and appreciate their
differences from others. Instead of being submissive and following American societal norms,
cultures should strive to build cultural, political, social, and economic communities that
appreciate and emphasize the richness of their own individual cultures and realize that trying to
educate racist people is not the best use of our energy. As a result, everyone can come together to
create a unified mosaic. Amy Tan s essay titled, Mother Tongue describes the idea that we all
speak different languages unconsciously and that we are categorized by the way we speak. Tan
describes her life with her mother in America and how her mother s limited English had an
influence on her life. For example, Tan s mother once said, Why he don t send me check, already
two weeks late. So, mad he lie to me, losing me money (Tan, 365). For Tan, her mother s way of
speaking English is an intimate language used only among her family. I believe Americans view
this type of language as poor because they cannot appreciate the level of intimacy in it; however,
Americans do not realize is that many use this type of intimate language when communicating with
babies in gurgles, cooing, and indistinguishable noises. The

Salmonella – description, pathogenesis, symptoms Essay
Salmonella description, pathogenesis, symptoms
Salmonella is a gram negative bacillus that causes inflammation of the GI tract and in some cases, if
the immune response is not sufficiently powerful and treatment is not administered, can become
systemic and cause even more serious conditions throughout the body. After ingestion, these
bacteria cause infection by invading the epithelial cells of the small intestine and macrophages.
Though there are more than two thousand different subspecies of Salmonella, few of them are able
to cause serious conditions in humans for most, the disease resolves itself in a matter of days.
Those who are most affected by Salmonella infection are infants, the elderly, and people with

salmonella is a specialized invader of the gastrointestinal system that can cause a variety of painful
conditions of varying severity.
The bacteria known as Salmonellae are gram negative, rod shaped bacilli that belong to the family
Enterobacteriacea they are typically anaerobic, unable to form spores, and motile, or able to move
around spontaneously. An important characteristic of the Salmonella bacteria is that they are able
to grow and multiply outside living host organisms, thus having greater survival chances than
otherwise (Gray and Fedorka Cray 56).
The bacteria can have a combination of three antigens: the O antigen, H antigen, and Vi antigen.
The O antigen is located in the cell wall of the bacterium, and each salmonella bacillus may
posses 2 or more O antigens on its surface. Also, the H antigen is a flagellar antigen that can be
destroyed by heat and enables the motility of the Salmonella bacterium (Slack and Snyder 295).
The last antigen is known as the Vi antigen because this antigen is related the virulence of the
bacterium. As a capsular antigen, its presence enhances the virulence of the bacterium that has it of
all the sub species of Salmonella, only two, Salmonella enterica serovar (S.) typhi and S.
choleraesuis, have the Vi antigen (296).

Youth And The Hip Hop Youth Culture
Australian Youth Culture
Introduction
Youth has various definitions. It can be considered as a state of mind, a life stage, or a stage of
development. Youth can also be considered as a creation of marketing and a demographic
category. Youth cultures as well as subcultures based on the theory or theories applied refer to
cultures that in most part comprise of young people as the members. Youth cultures are
determined by ways of living and they revolve around peer groups that stress a definitive style of
living as an external designation of affiliation and appearance. In this essay, I will analyse how
globalisation, popular culture, and consumerism emerge as factors that influence the participation of
young people in the hip hop youth culture in Australia. I will also apply the human ecological
theory in order to facilitate the understanding of factors that affect youth participation in the hip hop
culture.
Culture is generally described as a way of life. It entails the meanings, values, practices, and beliefs
that are usually contrasted with structure, nature, and biology (Alim, 2006). As a concept, culture
can be divided into two. The first classification of culture is the expressive culture form which
comprises of argot, artifact, behaviour, and clothing that constitute the expression of a given youth
culture (ibid). The second classification of culture is the impressive form of culture content. This
implies to the culture meaning (ibid). In the same vein, youth

Madame Bovary Essay
The confinement of females under mental and physical distress is the central theme in Gustave
Flaubert s Madame Bovary, and Wilkie Collins The Woman in White. Flaubert s Emma Bovary is a
narcissist whose self induced obsession with literature restricts her from having a happy fulfilling
life, as nothing compares to the excitement and adventures she reads in her novels. While the plot
of Wilkie Collins The Woman in White depicts two women incarcerated against their will in a
private mental institution. These private asylums proliferated in the mid nineteenth century as
alternatives to the established large scale public hospitals/asylums. This assignment will compare

Indeed, Emma is a narcissist who is dying in her own solitary world. Her father takes the earliest
opportunity to marry her off to a doctor for his own pecuniary measures, as the narrative states,
Pere Rouault would not have been vexed to have his daughter off his hands, for she was hardly
any use to him in the house (p, 23). Emma s long process of dying endures throughout her life, but
nothing she does matches the felicity, passion and rapture (33) she reads about in her novels.
Emma s disappointments arise from her frustration to aspire to a more refined and sophisticated
class than the one she actually is. Furthermore, the fairy tale ending she thought would come
through her marriage does not transpire, instead, all sense of her own individuality disappeared
and society expected her to act in a certain way. Emma does not appreciate the love she has around
her and she is constantly discontented, Oh, why, dear God, did I marry him

How Does Sita Portrayed In Ramayana
Chapter 1
Introduction
Sita is the most controversial figure in Indian mythology. Critics are always at war while
discussing her actual character. Some regard her as a Goddess while there are many who consider
her as an oppressed woman bearing the pangs of patriarchy. As she is a mythical figure, not much
proof is available regarding her existence. It was first through the epic Ramayana by Valmiki that
we received information about her character and personality. Myths are not a reliable source as they
are ambiguous and cannot be assigned a single meaning.
You should never assign a meaning to a myth because if you assign a meaning, the mind clamps
onto just that one meaning. Then it s no longer active, because when a story is active it allows for
new beginnings all the time. Don t give meanings to anything...[for] it doesn t ever mean just one ...

However, Samhita Arni aims at defying such an opinion. She unleashes another perspective which
is the intermingling of first two perspectives in her graphic novel Sita s Ramayana . She believes
that Sita is a very complicated character and there is a lot more to her when observed deeply. She
agrees that Sita is victimised by the patriarchal society but she rejects the view that considers
Sita as a submissive. Her opinion does not identify Sita only as an ideal , loyal and devoted wife
but she also becomes a subversive and fiery woman as and when the situation demands. According
to Samhita and most feminists, the name Sita itself is synonymous to strength , grace , valour and
sacrifice . Sita is the very image of kindness and therefore she forgives Rama and acts as a moral
bridge in a marital relationship. She maintains a graceful bond with her husband no matter how ill
matched is Rama s thinking. She shows her subversive side when she rejects Rama at the end and
plunges herself into the earth

borrowing from other games. It is no secret that throughout the years, Call of Duty has some
pretty significant rivals, and on a head to head basis in the early days, the games often came off
worse. The PlayStation 2 era titles are a prime example of this, with Medal of Honor: Frontline

William Shakespeare s Othello And Racial Interactions...
New York City is the biggest, most international, multi racial and cultural difference city in the
world. It is common for the New Yorkers to interact with people visiting from all over the world.
The racial differences seem not to matter to anyone in New York. The book Othello show
similarities to racial interactions with the ones from New York City. However, looking closer at the
play, Othello, seem to show us many interesting aspects of cultural differences. It seems that not
only, racial and cultural differences were unconventional, but also unnatural .
As an illustration, within first act of Othello , Roderigo and Iago encounter Brabanito and make
many _not nice__ remarks towards the relationship between Brabanito s daughter and Othello. Iago
says (...) an old black ram is tupping your white ewe. (P.30), suggesting that the black ram is
Othello, and the white ewe is Desdemona. The first aspect of that quote is that a black ram,
meaning black person (Othello) shouldn t be tapping, meaning reproduce (having sex) with a white
ewe, a white person (Desdemona). Iago suggests that Othello s relationship is not only
unconventional to the society in those times, but also unnatural . Iago tries to explain that Othello s
and Desdemona s relationship in unnatural because, as he states in the previous citation, a black
ram and a white ewe shouldn t be interacting with each other. Another supportive line that Iago used
to underline the racial difference, and the

Chinese Room Scenario by John R. Searle Essay
Chinese Room Scenario by John R. Searle Through the use of his famous Chinese room
scenario, John R. Searle tries to prove there is no way artificial intelligence can exist. This
means that machines do not posses minds. The debate between those who are in favor of strong
and weak artificial intelligence (AI) is directly related to the philosophy of mind. The claim of
weak AI is that it is possible to run a program on a machine, which will behave as if it were a
thinking thing. Believers of strong AI say that it is possible to create a program running on a
machine which not only behaves as if it were thinking, but does actually think. Strong AI followers
argue that an installation of a computer program is considered a mind as real... Show more content

Searle remarks that this choice of program is not directly relevant to his argument, but is merely an
example. He then suggests that instead of running the program on a machine, that it can be
represented as a series of written instructions that he could follow. To make sure he is following the
instructions, everything is expressed in Chinese, since Searle did not know the language. The
complete situation has Searle in a room where Chinese symbols are passed through one slot of the
room along with English instructions on how to read them. He then computes them and passes out
the meanings through the second slot in the room. Searle s actions resemble Schank s program.
The input is the Chinese and instructions, and the output is the translated story. Since he is the
installation of the computer program, it shows the reader how other installations, such as a
program running on a machine, must lack the same understanding of Chinese and of the stories as
he does. The Chinese room offers a good starting point for thinking about the claims of strong AI,
but it does not completely prove they are false. It is not at all surprising that Searle running the
program does not show understanding of Chinese since the program, in any of its installations,
never seems to understand it in the first place. The program was only a simple story, which could
give answers to certain questions, but also made no attempt to ever

God Is The God Of Wine And Parties
Dionysus is the god of wine and parties. He is the son of Semele, a mortal, and Zeus, god of the
sky and ruler of all the gods. There have been many similarities between Dionysus and Jesus made
by people throughout history yet we have to wonder why do we need Dionysus? He is not exactly
the most moral god ever. Is he actually important and necessary in Greek mythology? Does his
danger outweigh his importance and necessity? What is the play telling us about sanity and insanity?
There have been so many similarities throughout history noted between Dionysus in The Bacchae
and Jesus in The Bible. Some similarities include their births, people wanting to kill them as infants,
others disbelief that they are gods, the persecution because others do not believe in their divinity,
and their rebirths.
Both gods were born to virgins and miraculously conceived without sex. When Semele told others
about her pregnancy, she was mocked. They said that Dionysus was no son of Zeus, but Semele
had slept beside a man in love. Cadmus lied to protect his daughter s name. (Euripides 20, 28). In
the book of Matthew, Mary conceives a child through the Holy Spirit while she was still betrothed
to Joseph (Matthew 1:18).
Both gods lives were in danger as infants. When Dionysus was born Zeus s wife, Hera, was
furious Zeus had had another affair and tried to throw Dionysus down Mount Olympus. Zeus hid
Dionysus and gave Hera a [baby] molded piece of the ether that encircles the Earth (Hathaway 247)

Comparing Colonial Virginia and Colonial New England s...
I believe colonial New England had more of an effect on the American character than Virginia for
several reasons. First they promoted more of the values that have transcended into modern day
America such as religious toleration, their educational ideas and their focus on the importance of
family. And we shouldn t forget the fact that the American Revolution began in New England so in
essence the America we know today would not exist without New England.
First off, colonial New England was more family based, as I believe America is today. When
immigrants landed in New England they brought with them their families, expecting this place to
become their permanent place of residence. Therefore their communities were more tight nit and ...

Second, the New England colonies were founded by many who were seeking religious freedom,
therefore the New England colonies were more open minded regarding religion. For instance, the
first religious toleration act was passed in Maryland in 1649 by the by the assembly of the
Province of Maryland. This act mandated religious toleration. Rhode Island was also seen as a
colony of free thinkers and a place for religious toleration. So there was simply a lot of diversity
in New England, the vast majority were Protestant Christians however there were significant
numbers of Roman Catholics in Maryland and Delaware, as well as a small amount of Jews, most
of which lived in Rhode Island. So therefore it was New England that began acting upon one of
this country s founding ideals, the ideal of freedom of religion.
Our system of education is still based of a lot of colonial New England s system of education.
The first public schools of the new world began in New England with the passing of what is
referred to as the Olde Deluder Satan Act which specified that schools be started and publicly
supported when town populations were large enough. So basically they would build a school if
the population of a particular are became large enough and the demand from the local citizenship
was high enough. Whereas those in the Virginia area s of the new world were either home
schooled (often poorly) or immediately

  • 3. The Education Of Higher Education Institutions of higher learning compete amongst each other, enabling them to focus on subjects that do not pertain to education. The education system has become more of a business organization, making learning their second priority and further shifting their focus from the quality of education and students to the quantity of students and the popularity of their institution. The economy of the country has also had a big impact on shaping universities operating systems. American modern economy is based on knowledge, thus there is an increasing high demand for higher education. Higher educationhas become a market system, and universities have to change their traditional structure in order to become a valuable competitor; although education is in demand, the supply of quality in education is decreasing. Competition among traditional universities and the increase of for profit schools have diminished the value of higher education. Educational instiutions are evolving into businesses and primarily focusing on the profit aspect.Education is a very valuable business, it creates a lot of free cash flow and there is a high rate of educational needs that continue to grow. In the essay The Sandbox Experiment , by Peter Sacks, the author makes an argument that professors are placed in situations where they are forced to moderate their course material in order to please their students(Sacks 1 2). • 7. Chesapeake Bay Eutrophication In this paper I will examine multiple perspectives in an attempt to understand the recent eutrophication of the Chesapeake Bay. Our textbook, Cambell Biology defines eutrophication as a process in which nutrients, usually phosphorus and nitrogen, are unusually present in a body of water, leading to algae blooms and accelerated growth. Anoxia is a condition in which areas of water are severely depleted of dissolved oxygen. Fisher, Hagy, Boynton, and Williams provide a helpful overview of this phenomenon, focusing their study on the Choptank and Patuxent estuaries specifically. They note that the Chesapeake has become eutrophic over the last 50 to 100 years and that systematic monitoring since 1970 has shown a 2 5 fold increase in nitrogen and phosphorus inputs. They attribute this change to sewage discharges, fertilizer application, atmospheric depositions, and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 11. The New Black The speech I attended was a panel of women who had all previously been to prison. This panel was particularly interesting because these women were the inspiration for the television series Orange is the New Black. The Netflix original series is based on Piper Kerman s book of the same name. The book was based on her experience in the womens prisonDanbury, which is located in Connecticut. Piper wrote about her personal story and the stories of many of the women she interacted with. Several of these very women came to Suffolk University to give a talk on their own personal experience in the prison system and their thoughts on the television series. There were four women who spoke to us, two of whom were in prison with Piper, one who attended the same prison at a different time, and one women who was a professor at Suffolk University and had never been to prison. Each womanspoke about her own personal experience with the prison system and they all spoke about the issues surrounding the United States legal system. They also all spoke about the problems with America s glorification of the prison system, especially in recent years. The entire speech was very clearly targeted to college students, as each woman spent time addressing us personally as the next generation who can do something about the faulty legal system. The fear and pain I am feeling deep inside me is unbearable and seems to become more and more horrifying as time goes past. As my cracked lips tremble, Pearl shaped tears slowly drip out of my puffed up eyes and down my frail face, as I remember that unforgettable moment that happened in a split second. I stare at the damp, dirty ceiling with my heart completely shattered, trying to think of reasons why I should live. The more I think about the accident, the more distressed I feel. I walked out of my warm apartment, as the cold breeze instantly smacked me in the face, even with my woolly, Christmas themed sweater and thick, quilted coat I was still cold. German discount grocery stores, such as ALDI, have dominated the German retail food sector and continue to grow. In many parts of Germany the discount grocers have been so successful that they are becoming oligopolies. The long term success of the German discount grocers is related to the price of products, product selection, choice of store location, and size of new stores. Jurgens gives credit to the creation of discount stores to German discount food giant ALDI. ALDI has gone through great lengths to standardize its stores and maintain a consistent area per store. Many of ALDI stores are 500 1000 square meters of retail space with large parking lots. The location of discount grocers was determined to be in peripheral urban locations, on arterial roads, or in commercial business parks. William of Normandy followed Sun Tzu s Art of War and because of the he went on to win the battle. William of Normandy won the battle by following Sun Tzu s teachings of Weak points Strong, Strategy and tactics, and leading by example. William of Normandy used Sun Tzu s tactic of attacking the enemy s weakness while avoiding the enemy s strength. According to Sun Tzu Art of War When Strong, avoid them. If of high morale, depress them. Seem humble to fill when conceit. If at ease, exhaust them. If united separate them. Attack their weaknesses. Emerge to their surprise. The previous quote tells us to stay away from enemy who is strong, and if they are strong, make them weak. Then once they are weak attack them and exploit their weaknesses. William of Normandy demonstrated this tactic very well. He exploited the strong shield wall of the Anglo Saxons by retreating his army. Samurai values, kimono clothing, Noh Theater, woodblock art, and sumo wrestling are among the many instantly identifiable aspects of Japan s culture. Many of Japan s cultures have developed through centuries of feudal rule and has benefited from the country s geographic isolation. Japan put in place a policy of national seclusion for hundreds of years until the 1850s, but it succumbed to an imperialist power by the end of the 19th century. The culture of Japan was spread internationally through occupation in military campaigns before World War II. Japan then reinvented itself after the war and began to flourish economically. • 30. Comparison s The Trolley Problem By Judith Jarvis Thomson The article, The Trolley Problem , written by Judith Jarvis Thomson, poses an intense ethical argument. Within the reading, she addresses two of Philippa Foot s imaginary situations. The first involves a trolley with faulty brakes, and if the driver should flip the switch to kill five people or just one person. The second is a similar situation; should a doctor let five patients die or operate on one patient to take his organs without consent? I will argue that it is not morally permissible to turn the trolley or to operate without consent. This article starts with an interesting scenario. A trolley is speeding down its tracks. As the trolley is coming around a turn, the driver sees five men working on the tracks. Luckily, the driver of the trolley has the option to flip a switch to make the trolley turn to the right onto a separate section of the tracks. It is not that simple, though. On the right spur of the tracks, one man is working. Philippa Foothas arranged that no matter which way the driver turns, it would be impossible for the workmen to get off the track safely and on time to avoid being run down by the trolley (Thomson 1395). As a first instinct, the driver tries to slam on the trolley s brakes to avoid hitting any of the workmen. Unfortunately, the brakes on the trolley do not work. Thus, the driver is left facing this situation: should he continue going straight or should he quickly turn the trolley to the right? If he stays straight, he will continue hurdling towards the five helpless workmen, inevitably hitting and killing all five of them. If he flips to switch to turn the trolley right, the driver will undoubtedly hit the lone workman and take his life (Thomson 1395). Now here is the real catch of the situation: the reader is the trolley driver. It is up to the reader of this article to decide what route to take. Would the reader, in the driver s situation, keep the trolley straight, or turn it to the right? Thomson explains that when she gave such a hypothetical case to several people, the consensus was overwhelmingly harmonious. Many readers believed that it was morally permissible for you to turn the trolley (Thomson 1395). Some say that it is completely necessary to turn the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It seems a suitable island that is out of the way, but it is in the centre of everything at the same time. People are very unsuspecting of it, and it was the same in World War 2 as well... The Germans and the rest of the Axis had very good reasons for wanting to control Madagascar. The first is that they were going to use this remote island as a place to deport some of the remaining 10,000 Jewish refugees still in France that had not been able to find a home in South Africa or Brazil. The French were not the only ones suffering though; the Polish and the Germans really need to get the Jews out as well. However like many of the other Nazi ideologies, it was not a new one. A lot of British, Polish and Dutch anti Semites had been considering the idea to move the Jews there since as early as 1878. Luckily for Nazis, Madagascar was under the control and within the empire of Vichy France (the part of France that had surrendered to Hitler), and according to the surrender terms, France had to let the Germans into Madagascar as well. It was going to be easy. Not only would it get rid of the Jews, but it would also help the Axis financially as the Jews were currently surviving on charity. In May 1936, there was a new French administration voted in, and there was serious talk of the Jews being moved there, and they even went as far as to investigate the island to check if it was liable for that ... There are too many controversies with fracking though, at least for me, to accept this as a long term solution. To give you just an abbreviated idea of some of frackings issues, here is a shortlist. It requires that we pump millions of gallons of water mixed with tens of thousands of gallons of chemicals into the ground, which could potentially seep into our drinking water sources. The water used for fracking must remain in the earth once contaminated for proper disposal. How can we remove this much water from the natural cycle when there are so many locations already susceptible to drought conditions? This process has also been causing a multitude of earthquakes in regions that before did not have them. Another drawback is that during the fracking process methane gas could be and likely is being leaked into the atmosphere. Methane gas is even worse for the greenhouse effect than the carbon dioxide we usually worry over (Loki). Negative impacts are being felt currently in the Western US and are not showing signs of slowing up. Droughtis highly dependent on human consumption of water be it for agricultural, industrial, or household uses. There are many issues regarding human consumption of water, but one of the most notable is the fact that we have very little fresh water available that can be accessed and used by humans. According to the USGS, about 71% of the Earth s surface is water covered, and the oceans hold about 96.5% of all Earth s water (Perlman, 2014). • 52. Chinese Room Scenario by John R. Searle Essay Chinese Room Scenario by John R. Searle Through the use of his famous Chinese room scenario, John R. Searle tries to prove there is no way artificial intelligence can exist. This means that machines do not posses minds. The debate between those who are in favor of strong and weak artificial intelligence (AI) is directly related to the philosophy of mind. The claim of weak AI is that it is possible to run a program on a machine, which will behave as if it were a thinking thing. Believers of strong AI say that it is possible to create a program running on a machine which not only behaves as if it were thinking, but does actually think. Strong AI followers argue that an installation of a computer program is considered a mind as real... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Searle remarks that this choice of program is not directly relevant to his argument, but is merely an example. He then suggests that instead of running the program on a machine, that it can be represented as a series of written instructions that he could follow. To make sure he is following the instructions, everything is expressed in Chinese, since Searle did not know the language. The complete situation has Searle in a room where Chinese symbols are passed through one slot of the room along with English instructions on how to read them. He then computes them and passes out the meanings through the second slot in the room. Searle s actions resemble Schank s program. The input is the Chinese and instructions, and the output is the translated story. Since he is the installation of the computer program, it shows the reader how other installations, such as a program running on a machine, must lack the same understanding of Chinese and of the stories as he does. The Chinese room offers a good starting point for thinking about the claims of strong AI, but it does not completely prove they are false. It is not at all surprising that Searle running the program does not show understanding of Chinese since the program, in any of its installations, never seems to understand it in the first place. The program was only a simple story, which could give answers to certain questions, but also made no attempt to ever ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 53. God Is The God Of Wine And Parties Dionysus is the god of wine and parties. He is the son of Semele, a mortal, and Zeus, god of the sky and ruler of all the gods. There have been many similarities between Dionysus and Jesus made by people throughout history yet we have to wonder why do we need Dionysus? He is not exactly the most moral god ever. Is he actually important and necessary in Greek mythology? Does his danger outweigh his importance and necessity? What is the play telling us about sanity and insanity? There have been so many similarities throughout history noted between Dionysus in The Bacchae and Jesus in The Bible. Some similarities include their births, people wanting to kill them as infants, others disbelief that they are gods, the persecution because others do not believe in their divinity, and their rebirths. Both gods were born to virgins and miraculously conceived without sex. When Semele told others about her pregnancy, she was mocked. They said that Dionysus was no son of Zeus, but Semele had slept beside a man in love. Cadmus lied to protect his daughter s name. (Euripides 20, 28). In the book of Matthew, Mary conceives a child through the Holy Spirit while she was still betrothed to Joseph (Matthew 1:18). Both gods lives were in danger as infants. When Dionysus was born Zeus s wife, Hera, was furious Zeus had had another affair and tried to throw Dionysus down Mount Olympus. Zeus hid Dionysus and gave Hera a [baby] molded piece of the ether that encircles the Earth (Hathaway 247) ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 54. Comparing Colonial Virginia and Colonial New England s... I believe colonial New England had more of an effect on the American character than Virginia for several reasons. First they promoted more of the values that have transcended into modern day America such as religious toleration, their educational ideas and their focus on the importance of family. And we shouldn t forget the fact that the American Revolution began in New England so in essence the America we know today would not exist without New England. First off, colonial New England was more family based, as I believe America is today. When immigrants landed in New England they brought with them their families, expecting this place to become their permanent place of residence. Therefore their communities were more tight nit and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Second, the New England colonies were founded by many who were seeking religious freedom, therefore the New England colonies were more open minded regarding religion. For instance, the first religious toleration act was passed in Maryland in 1649 by the by the assembly of the Province of Maryland. This act mandated religious toleration. Rhode Island was also seen as a colony of free thinkers and a place for religious toleration. So there was simply a lot of diversity in New England, the vast majority were Protestant Christians however there were significant numbers of Roman Catholics in Maryland and Delaware, as well as a small amount of Jews, most of which lived in Rhode Island. So therefore it was New England that began acting upon one of this country s founding ideals, the ideal of freedom of religion. Our system of education is still based of a lot of colonial New England s system of education. The first public schools of the new world began in New England with the passing of what is referred to as the Olde Deluder Satan Act which specified that schools be started and publicly supported when town populations were large enough. So basically they would build a school if the population of a particular are became large enough and the demand from the local citizenship was high enough. Whereas those in the Virginia area s of the new world were either home schooled (often poorly) or immediately ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
