World of
Vertebrates
 How many animals are there?
 Almost all living things are made up of either
animals or plants. There are 2 ways to tell them
apart:
1. Animals move around. Most plants are held by
their roots.
2. Animals find their food. Most plants make their
own food.
The animal world is divided into 2 groups. Animals
with backbone are called vertebrates.
Animals without backbone are called invertebrates.
Vertebrates
 Each vertebrate has an
inside skeleton
 A vertebrate’s skeleton
is the backbone and all
the other bones
Backbone
 The backbone is like a string of bones that
are close together. When you pet your cat or
dog, you can feel their backbone.
The animals that have bones can
be classifed into five different
groups.
1. The
Mammals
Mammals are alike in5 ways:
1. Make milk
2. They have hair
3. They have limbs
4. Warm blooded
5. Have lungs to breath
2. Fish
Fish
 Lives in the water their entire life
 Covered with scales
 Smell well, but has poor hearing.
 Instead of hearing they feel vibrations.
Fish are alike in 3 ways:
1. Gills
2. Fins
3. Cold bloded
3. Amphibians
Amphibians
 Amphibians are a class of animals that spend the
first part of their life in the water. Then some
can live on the land.
 They lay their eggs in the water.
 When the eggs grow they breath using their gills
then eventually develop lungs.
 The parents do not take care of the young at all.
Amphibians
 They are cold blooded.
 They do not have scales.
 Amphibian means “double- life”. They
spend their life on land and water.
