Library
 A place in which reading materials, such as books,
periodicals, and newspapers, and often other materials
such as musical and video recordings, are kept for use or
lending.
 A collection of such materials, especially when
systematically arranged.
 A room in a private home for such a collection.
 An institution or foundation maintaining such a collection.

 Is used in libraries with large collections of books. This system groups books
according to subjects of 61 major classes with each class represented by a
capital letter.

(DDC)
 Is a system of classifying books & other publications whereby main classes are
classifying books and other publications whereby main classes are designated
by a three-digit number & subdivisions are shown by numbers after a decimal
point

Encyclopedias, dictionaries, atlases,
almanacs, yearbooks, manuals,

CARD CATALOGUE
 Is a guide to the collection of
books in a library. It is an
alphabetical list of all the
books together with
information as to where they
may be located on the
shelves.

Author Card
 The first line of the author card has the author’s last and first names.
This is usually the main entry followed by other information about
the book.

 The first line of the author card has the author’s last and first names.
This is usually the main entry followed by other information about

Subject Card
 The first line of the subject card has the subject, usually in red or
black capital letters. This describes the content of the book.

The Call Number
 The Call Number guides you where to find the book on the shelf. It is found on
the upper lefthand corner of every card in the card catalougue. It is the
combination of the class number and the author number.

RULES AND REGULATIONS
 Leave your personal belongings such as handbags, briefcases, etc.,
outside the library entrance, on your own responsibility. The library
disclaims any liability for loss or damage.
 Submit any book or object for inspection, when requested by the
library staff.
 Do not write, underline or mark any book. Library books are carefully
examined on return and the borrower will be held responsible for the
damage.
 After reading, leave books on the table or on the book trolley. Please
do not shelve the books.
 Complete silence should be observed except for brief and subdued
talk with the library staff.
 Drinks and eatables are not allowed in the library.

RULES AND REGULATIONS
 Keep your mobiles off within the library premises.
 Report lost books or other materials to the library immediately to stop
overdue fines.
 In case of lost Library Card, please immediately report to the
circulation staff so that your membership is temporarily blocked to
prevent misuse of the Library Card. Once you get a replacement,
please inform circulation staff so that your memberships can be re-
activated.
 Ask for help from library staff if you are unable to find your required
material.
 While returning library books or other materials at the Circulation
Desk please ensure that the circulation staff has returned the book(s).

Using the library

  • 2. Library  A place in which reading materials, such as books, periodicals, and newspapers, and often other materials such as musical and video recordings, are kept for use or lending.  A collection of such materials, especially when systematically arranged.  A room in a private home for such a collection.  An institution or foundation maintaining such a collection. Study & Thinking Skills

Library Materials  Reference books of a general or specialized nature giving various kinds of information  Books of fiction consisting of novels and stories about imaginary people, places and things  Books of biographies and autobiographies  Books which supplement college courses such as education, engineering, business, computer, history, foreign language and others  General books not related to specific subjects and books on special fields not included in the program of instructions Study & Thinking Skills

Library Materials  Magazines & Newspapers that include current issues & bound volumes  Government reports & publications  Pamphlets & clippings kept in a special cabinet referred to as vertical files  Audiovisual materials such as pictures, films, plates & slides  Microfilms & microprints which are reduced photographic productions of printed materials  CD-ROM databases Study & Thinking Skills
  • 5. Library of Congress System  Is used in libraries with large collections of books. This system groups books according to subjects of 61 major classes with each class represented by a capital letter. Study & Thinking Skills

Dewey Decimal Classification Scheme (DDC)  Is a system of classifying books & other publications whereby main classes are classifying books and other publications whereby main classes are designated by a three-digit number & subdivisions are shown by numbers after a decimal point Study & Thinking Skills

Library Setup REFERENCE SECTION Encyclopedias, dictionaries, atlases, almanacs, yearbooks, manuals, magazine indices, handbooks, directories, gazettes and biographical dictionaries are arranged systematically in the Reference Section for class work or personal inquiries.   • 8. Library Setup  RESERVED BOOK SECTION Books that are in the Reserved Book Section can only be read in the library. They cannot be taken out for home use. Study & Thinking Skills
  • 9. Library Setup  FILIPINIANA SECTION Any book or pamphlet about the Philippines, including award-winning plays, poems and novels written by Filipinos can be found in the Filipiniana Section.
  • 10. Library Setup  PERIODICAL SECTION Magazines, periodicals & newspapers that contain many interesting and valuable articles on multifarious subjects including current issues are place in the Periodical Section. Study & Thinking Skills

  • 14. CARD CATALOGUE  Is a guide to the collection of books in a library. It is an alphabetical list of all the books together with information as to where they may be located on the shelves. Study & Thinking Skills
  • 15. Author Card  The first line of the author card has the author’s last and first names. This is usually the main entry followed by other information about the book. Study & Thinking Skills

  • 18. The Call Number  The Call Number guides you where to find the book on the shelf. It is found on the upper lefthand corner of every card in the card catalougue. It is the combination of the class number and the author number. Study & Thinking Skills
  • 19. RULES AND REGULATIONS  Leave your personal belongings such as handbags, briefcases, etc., outside the library entrance, on your own responsibility. The library disclaims any liability for loss or damage.  Submit any book or object for inspection, when requested by the library staff.  Do not write, underline or mark any book. Library books are carefully examined on return and the borrower will be held responsible for the damage.  After reading, leave books on the table or on the book trolley. Please do not shelve the books.  Complete silence should be observed except for brief and subdued talk with the library staff.  Drinks and eatables are not allowed in the library.   • 20. RULES AND REGULATIONS  Keep your mobiles off within the library premises.  Report lost books or other materials to the library immediately to stop overdue fines.  In case of lost Library Card, please immediately report to the circulation staff so that your membership is temporarily blocked to prevent misuse of the Library Card. Once you get a replacement, please inform circulation staff so that your memberships can be re- activated.  Ask for help from library staff if you are unable to find your required material.  While returning library books or other materials at the Circulation Desk please ensure that the circulation staff has returned the book(s).
