Culture Matters: The Impacts of Asian Culture on Mental Health and the Patient Practitioner
Relationship Mental health illnesses affect everyone. It is highly prevalent affecting people of all ages,
gender, cultures, and social groups. Attitudes towards mental health illnesses vary among individuals
and often are highly influenced by the various cultures that the individuals identify with. Culture as a
social concept can be defined as a set of norms, values, behaviours, and beliefs that are common and
shared amongst a group of individuals (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 1999).
Culture can be applicable to groups like Asians and Americans but also to groups of shared norms,
beliefs, and values established within professions such as the culture of patients and practitioners.
Culture provides these groups with structure and context to understanding their society and the world
as a whole. Culture influence a wide range of aspects of mental health, including how mental health is
perceived by the patient, how the patient will experience mental health stigma, and how they cope
with symptoms of mental health illness. Additionally, these cultural influences impact the relationship
between the patient and the practitioner in a number of ways.

Cluelessness In Clueless
Clueless of her own Cluelessness
The iconic release of Amy Heckerling s production of Clueless (1995), dramatized the struggles of a
typical, rich American princess Cher Horowitz. Her story is set in Beverly Hills, California where she
comes from an affluent home headed by her father who is a lawyer. Being in high school, Cher is
popular amongst her peers and that in addition to her wealthy background are big parts in upkeeping
her lavish lifestyle. Cher is obviously intelligent, yet still so naive; most of her focus and energy is
spent in hopes to achieve meaningless goals such as getting the boy she likes in the moment or having
designer clothes. Though she does maintain the egocentric, sort of superficial mindset throughout
most of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
And this is confirmed by her father, in the times she makes sure he is eating healthy and taking
medication as suggested by their doctor, etc. This suggests the idea that Cher might not be as self
centered and naive as she seems. Cher s taking upon the role of caring for her father comes from the
obvious lack of a maternal figure in their household. Later, in the narrative Cher finds that she wants
to help people and ends up offering the new girl at school a makeover. Whether or not Cher realizes
what she had done at that moment, is unknown to the audience. But in suggesting that Tai had
character traits that needed changing in order to fit into Beverly hills norms that might differ from
ones in the Bronx [where Tai initially is from]. It was that moment that marked the beginning of Tai s
assimilation to higher social status. Cher told Tai that they needed to work on that accent , after they
changed her hair color amongst other things. This all stems from Cher s presumption that Tai needed
help to fit into the new school she was attending, though Tai never asked for their help in the
beginning. Ironically, Cher mentions how clueless she thinks Tai is, when she really was the one that
had been clueless all long. However, it would be interesting to question Cher s true intentions of that
makeover. Because throughout the narrative, Cher and Dionne who would be considered the popular
girls , are depicted to be kindhearted and humanitarian. As opposed to the teen movies that followed
Clueless, less than a decade later such as Mark Waters production of Mean Girls (2004) in which the
popular girls are antagonists in the film; who are much less forgiving and

Comparing The Lewinsky Scandal In The Human Stain By...
Near the beginning of the novel, The Human Stain by Philip Roth, the Lewinsky Scandal is introduced
and discussed in great detail. The narrator indicates his feelings towards the forty second president of
The United States, Bill Clinton, and his affair with a White House employee. This woman, named
Monica Lewinsky, was twenty two years old when the political scandal was made public, while
President Clinton was forty nine years old. The Human Stain is set in 1998, which is the same year
that the scandal became known to the public and President Bill Clinton was impeached. However, the
author also introduces the Lewinsky Scandal because an equally astonishing affair has been revealed
in a small, quiet New England town. The author essentially compares the two affairs in order to show
how significant the affair between the two characters from the novel, Coleman Silk and Faunia Farley,
actually is. I also think that the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Faunia Farley goes to visit the specific bird at the Audubon Society. Faunia also reveals that she has
known Prince for quite some time by saying, I used to live in Seeley Falls, so I know all about Prince.
I knew him when he was up there hanging around Higgison s store (Roth 239 240). During her visit
with Prince, Faunia questions Prince s caretaker regarding the newspaper clippings about the crow.
The young girl responded by saying that Prince had torn down the articles that were posted on the wall
because He didn t want anybody to know his background! (Roth 240). I found this to be particularly
interesting because both Faunia and Coleman are guilty of hiding or lying about aspects in their lives.
Faunia tells everyone that she is illiterate, when she could, in actuality, read and write. This lie is
revealed when her diary is discovered. Coleman is also ashamed of his past as he tries to pass as a
white man, even though he is an African

Model Respect
Respect is one of the most important social skills that a person can have therefore it is educators and
parents to model to the young children what is respect. Before we do anything to the child we should
acknowledge them what we are about to do to them for example before moving the child from the
floor to the crib, caregivers should tell them what we are about to do to. In order to model respect to a
child, we must respect infants and toddlers as worthy people
An example of a respect interaction that I encountered was sitting outside of James Hall, in Brooklyn
College. There was a mom and a boy toddler (around two years old). The mom was holding the boy s
hand and was walking into the building. The mom was also giving the boy pieces of cut

The Day Of The World Country
Living in a 1st world country we never really think outside our borders, we mainly only realize our
problems in our country. Which could be anything from not being able to eat tomorrow to my parents
won t buy me the latest iPhone . Each country has their poor and their wealthy. Sure, we see those
commercials of starving 3rd world country children, who have little to nothing and we feel horrible.
We hear about wars and see the horrible tragedies they face but we will never fully understand the
horror or devastation they ve lived through until we walk in their shoes. We always find the things we
see on the news appalling, but truth is most of us won t do anything. After Paul thanks Jack, a
photographer he replies I think if people see this footage they ll say, oh my God that s horrible, and
then go on eating their dinners (Hotel Rwanda). It doesn t mean we are bad people, we all have our
own struggles and strife. We are all human, and to be human means different things to different
people. I believe that this film showed both sides of the human condition, one being a genuinely
decent human and the other showing people striped of all right or wrong conciseness. You would
always think why don t people stop this kind of brutality? and why don t they have a sense of wrong?!
The Hutu s may have had parents or guardians who installed in them that sense of hate, or someone
had a way with words and persuaded them that the Tutsi s were their rivals. Just like Hitler

Wineburg, Ohio Essay
Wineburg, Ohio
Winesburg, Ohio, also known as the Book of Grotesque is a modern American classic by Sherwood
Anderson. He came to be known as the Father of Realism , as he left his mark on literature, being the
first one to portray authentic moments in American life. He tells the stories of many faces he saw in
his dreams, describing their deeply moving lives filled with secrets. The twenty one stories in the
novel are united through the setting, Winesburg, and the main character, George Willard. The novel is
character driven, and the stories have very weak plots. Winesburg is a small town, full of lonely
characters whom Anderson calls grotesques because of their inability to express themselves and
communicate with others. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During the long years of his residence, he never considers himself as a part of the community. The
only person with whom he develops a kind of friendship was George Willard. During a conversation
with him, Biddlebaum leaves saying, I can t talk no more with you, (15) because the anguish from the
tragic memory overtook him. However, he still hungered for the presence of the boy, who was the
medium through which he expressed his love of man (15). He runs away from George, but he still
wishes his company; this manifestation makes him lonelier and more isolated.
Wing Biddlebaum is gifted with a quality that cannot be seen in most of (us) the people. During the
flash back, when the story goes back to the past and looks at the days when he used to be a teacher at
Pennsylvania, Biddlbaum was one of those rare, little understood men who rule by a power so gentle
that it passes as a lovable weakness (14). These fragment reveals that he was one of the few people
who can not only perceive other people s feelings, but can also teach them how to dream. Biddlbaum s
voice and hands, the stroking of the shoulders and the touching of the hair were a part of the [his]
effort to carry a dream into the young minds. He understood his students doubts and disbelief.
Knowing that the only way to start dreaming is by forgetting all negative thoughts, he was able to get

Increasing the Diversity of Plants
According to the Simpson s diversity index calculations of all the sites in figure 7, Site 3 had the
highest index reading of 0.701 out of 1. With 1 being the highest possible value, it indicates very high
diversity while 0; the lowest possible value, indicates no/very low diversity. This suggests that 0.701 is
a high reading, indicating high diversity of plant species. The analysis of the first hypothesis There is a
direct correlation between the diversity of plant species and the relative humidity at each site , will
help explain why site 3 had the highest diversity index reading when compared to the other sites. To
answer this hypothesis, data will be used from graphs in figure 2, 3 and 4. It can be suggested from
figure 2, 3 and 4 that the abiotic conditions of site 3 have proven to increase the diversity of plants
when compared to other sites. For plant A, according to figure 2, the humidity (rH) decreases from
64% in site 2 to 50.1% at site 3 while the total number of plant A increases from 9 in site 2 to 80 in
site 3. Even though the diversity of plant A increases with a decreased relative humidity in Lamma
Island, this is not supposed to occur in general according to theory as higher levels of relative
humidity are supposed to increase biodiversity, not decrease biodiversity. Theory suggests that a
higher level of humidity is supposed to decrease the effect of solar radiation while a lower level of
humidity is supposed to increase the effect of solar

The Book Thief Good Vs Evil
Henry David Thoreau once said, Justice is sweet and musical; but injustice is harsh and discordant.
Whenever there are complications and divided opinions in the world, nobody is at rest; because of
rallies, protests, fights, and angry mobs. But when justice is achieved, people can relax, even if for the
smallest amount of time. Thus, to reach times of joy and happiness, people need to overcome evil
through strong efforts as a whole; but, defeating evil takes more than just rallying together. There are
many obstacles along the path of achieving justice, that forestall the good men s endeavors. Some
argue that the key to evil s success is either for good men to do nothing, or for evil to fight stronger.
Edmund Burke, a political theorist, believes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, in The Book Thief, Jewish prisoners are led down Munich Street as the German people
watch them silently. But an outlier, Hans Hubermann, sees the starved prisoners and presents a piece
of bread, to a Jewish man (Zusak 394). Hans gives hope to the prisoner that there are still people out
there, willing to help others out. He makes the man feel like a human, alive and thankful again.
However, Hans kindness comes to a halt when he is brutally whipped on the street by a German
soldier (Zusak 394). Even when Hans attempts to be a good samaritan, his plans are crushed by the
authority of the Nazis. Additionally, Hans later on regrets his decision to help the Jewish man, and
worries that Max will be taken away by the Nazis; so he sends Max away, to escape. When Hans acts,
he does not solve injustice he only worsens it, by putting Max and his family in possible danger.
Therefore, good men ultimately do not reach complete justice, because some things are out of their
control. According to an article called Remembering Selma s Bloody Sunday , Martin Luther King
and a group of peaceful protesters for black voting rights marched from Selma to Montgomery. When
they arrived, they were stopped by Alabama state troopers, who then knocked the marchers to the
ground...struck them with sticks...and chased them back over the bridge (Klein). The brutal beatings
from the troopers ended their rallies, leaving them unable to fight at that moment. Their attempts to
make change would have succeeded if it were not for the uncontrollable force of the police. Similarly,
in an article called Freedom Summer , black Mississippians and few white volunteers came together to
peacefully protest black voting rights. Before the Freedom Summer movement, less than seven
percent of the state s eligible black voters were registered to

Mary Barton Disparity Between The Rich And The Poor
The main purpose about the first ten chapters of Mary Barton is to emphasis the disparity between the
rich and the poor. It focuses on how the poor work a lot and the rich benefit from it. The rich know
nothing if the trials of the poor; (Mary Barton) This quote stuck out to me because in the book it
seemed to talk a lot about how the rich benefited the most from what the poor did. This in turn created
areas in the city that were mostly poor. Once these people were in this part of the city they had a hard
time getting out. It was hard for them to make money to get out of there. Han ye had no money fra th

earnings. Their stock prices have also significantly grown along with their success. They had hit a
high stock price of $46.81 in 2009. Buffalo Wild Wings average earning per share is about $1.45 from
2006 to 2010. In the following graph to the right you are able to see the recent increase of same store

Buffalo Wild Wings has been able to react well to the fall in economy. The same store sales has
remained pretty consistent in the more recent years from 2011 to 2013. Case Study

Middle Eastern Respiratory Syndrome
Middle Eastern Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) is only a recently found human infectious agent,
originating in the Middle East (Zaki et al 2012). MERS infections are due to an individual being
infected by a coronavirus (CoV), more specifically the MERS CoV. Corona virus symptoms are
typically acute, upper and lower respiratory infections (Tyrell Myint 1996). MERS like all corona
viruses, are spherical or pleomorphic enveloped which contain a single stranded positive sense RNA
(Tyrell Myint 1996). Transmission of corona viruses typically involves close contact and through
aerosol droplets, usually spread from sneezing (Tyrell Myint 1996). Corona viruses invade the
respiratory tract, and have an incubation period of roughly 3 days, causing ... Show more content on

As mentioned before, MERS CoV zoonotic infections are transmitted from animal reservoirs to
humans (Azhar et al 2014). As of 2014, there were 707 patients suffering from MERS throughout 21
countries, with a case fatality rate of 35% (Sharif Yakan Kanj 2014).). Furthermore, peak infections
appear to occur seasonally, peaking between April and June each year (Sharif Yakan Kanj 2014).). A
coincidence of the seasonality of the diseases is that it is parallel with camel birthing seasons, where
younger camels are infected easier than older ones (Sharif Yakan Kanj 2014).). Although it has spread
some distance (as previously mentioned), the spread of the disease has occurred in small clusters,
typically infecting a family or healthcare area (Breban et al 2013). Animal to human transmission,
such as a camel to human, must involve close exposure of the infected animal, as well as a passing of
aerosol nasal droplets from the animal into the human respiratory tract (Azhar et al 2014). Human to
human transmission occurs the same way, an infected individual can pass MERS coughing, sneezing
and nasal secretions (Azhar et al 2014). Although, transmission of MERS is known to be a sporadic
disease, which occurs between family members and requires prolonged exposure (Mackay Arden
2015). As the transmission rates depend on increased exposure time, and that one is

The Insanity Of Edgar Allan Poe
Edgar Allan Poe, was especially antisocial, and some would say insane. His insanity was solely
prompted by events in his life. On December 8, 1811, both of Poe s parents died from the dreadful
disease, tuberculosis. Poe s foster mother, with whom he was close with, dies in Richmond on
February 28, 1829 from a long sickness. Upon the date Aug 1, 1831, Poes older brother Henry dies of
either tuberculosis or cholera at the age of 27. Poe s wife Virginia died of tuberculosis on Jan 30, 1847
(Poe Museum). Poe has been so despondent while the illness consumed the final months of Virginia s
life that friends thought he was going insane. The loss of his wife extended Poes dependency on
alcohol. Some of Poe s beliefs were viewed as ludicrous, but truly were coherent. Poe expresses these
beliefs throughout his stories. These beliefs include, alcohol can end and destroy one s life, there s
nothing to stop death, and that true happiness is not possible as long as moral evil lurks within the
darkness.
Edgar Allan Poe believed that alcohol could end and destroy one s life. He conveyed this belief
throughout Hop Frog, and Cask of Amontillado. In Poe s story Hop Frog, a self righteous king coerced
a jester to drink knowing he was especially not fond of alcohol. The king himself was intoxicated, and
had performed his actions solely for his amusement and attention from his consol of ministers. Hop
Frog became tremendously irritated. His irritation had brought great iniquitous actions,

Durkheim also suggested the use of statistics to investigate into social fact. Statistics can reflect social
phenomena. They are the external index for individuals consciousness. Some criticisms claimed that
such index does not represent social currents or phenomena because they are merely the aggregate of
individual datum. However, Durkheim argued,
(statistics like marriage, birth rate,) each of these figures contains all the individual cases
indiscriminately, the individual circumstances which may have had a share in the production of the
phenomenon are neutralized, consequently, do not contribute to its determination. The average, then
expresses a certain state of the group mind. (Durkheim, 1964: 8)
He argued that these social facts arises from social relationships and human association and exist at
the level of society as a whole while individual cases are insignificant. The change in the rates
(Durkheim calls it pathological) reflected changes in certain social currents or social relationships and
it remained as a fact external and coercive to each person.
In conclusion, social fact were both the way of functioning (like thinking, acting and feeling) and the
way of being (the size of population, suicide rates etc). He successfully extending scientific
rationalism to human behavior and differentiate sociology from other natural and social

In comparison to US, Australia s structural unemployment rate is higher (Statista, 2018) that gives
some ground for Australia to lower the unemployment rate from the nation (Australian Government
Budget, 2004 05). Before the Second World War, the unemployment rate of Australia was only around
two percent. Due to increase in working age population in Australia, along with increase in
employment, unemployment rate also increases. Rapid growth in economy, trained workers, educated
and skilled workers, expansion of business in country will lead to lower the unemployment rate.
Carvalho (2015) claimed that every year number of young Australians enter the labour market and
they get trouble while searching for the job due to lack of experience, low skill, skill mismatch.
Unemployment is not problem of Australia only rather it has become the global issue. Australia has
been able to lower its unemployment rate in recent five years. The study explains the unemployment

Analysis of Jonathan Harr´s A Civil Action Essay
Jonathan Harr wrote a compelling novel, called A Civil Action, on the actual events of a thrilling court
case involving two major corporations and the families who were affected greatly. In Woburn,
Massachusetts there were twenty eight children who contracted acute lymphocytic leukemia between
the years of 1964 and 1986. The explanation for the contraction of the disease and even the death of
some of the children was discovered in the water; two municipal wells near the town were found to be
contaminated with toxic chemicals. Eight families filed suit against W.R. Grace Co. and Beatrice
Foods Inc., accusing them for the contamination of the wells and the death of their children. The
families only wanted an apology and the truth but when ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In a conversation with Schlichtmann, Facher stated, the truth? I thought we were talking about a court
of law. Come on, you ve been around long enough to know that a courtroom isn t a place to look for
the truth. Facher also stated, truth is found at the bottom of a bottomless pit. If truth is never found in
court, it must ve taken a lot of nerve to take on the Woburn case. Facher s words provide proof that
achieving victory is far more important than providing the facts and discovering truth, in his opinion.
His actions and tactics indeed worked for him.
Furthermore, the chances of the plaintiff winning a civil court case are low. When it comes to it, a
settlement is commonly agreed on before a verdict is even presented. Schlichtmann didn t want the
case and refused at first because he knew it was going to be tough. He explained his reasons for not
wanting the case in his quote:
The odds of a plaintiff s lawyer winning in civil court are two to one against. Think about that for a
second. Your odds of surviving a game of Russian roulette are better than winning a case at trial. 12
times better. So why does anyone do it? They don t. They settle. Out of the 780,000, only 12,000 or
11/2 percent ever reach a verdict. The whole idea of lawsuits is to settle, to compel the other side to
settle. And you do that by spending more money than you should, which forces them to spend more
money than they should, and

Rodeo Is The Way Of Life
We all ride for the same purpose, to win, but its those that ride with their heart and soul and leave
everything in the arena that truly win in the end, no matter the outcome of the final placing. Its not the
person on the horse s back, or the cowboy on a bodacious bull, that wins. It s the horse and the bull
themselves that are the champions. There are misconceptions when it comes to the sport of rodeo.
Despite what PETA and animal activists think, rodeo is the way of life for some people and nothing
can change that. We take pride in our animals, the livestock we use, and wouldn t dream on
attentionally mistreating these wonderful creatures. People who deliberately chose to plan their
recreation around the same animals they spend long hours working with developed rodeo. Rodeo was
designed with thorough knowledge and respect of the animal s capabilities and limitations. Who
would know a horses or bulls capability better than someone that works with them everyday? We
wouldn t use or ride an animal that couldn t perform the task needed to get the job done. These
animals were built for work. They were not put on this earth to stand in a field and become lawn
ornaments. Most rodeo contestants have a great deal of respect and love for these animals they work
with and it s a huge insult to those people who say they are recklessly endangering the lives of these
animals. PETA has been pretty lose with their accusations of physical abuse to rodeo animals and cite

The Symbol Of The Confederate Flag
On September 18, 1863 Confederate soldiers stood proud at the edge of the battle field raising their
Confederate Flag in pride and hope. One hundred and fifty four years later, that flag is now being
demonized from its true meaning by many people. Conflict about this well known flag has been going
on for generations. In Georgia, during the Civil War, the Confederate Flag represented the formation
of the Confederacy and hope for success of the Southern states; now some people have turned the flag
into a symbol of racism, hate, and many more untrue meanings.
The idea of a Confederate Flag started 24 days after the secession of the Confederate States of
America from the United States. These states included South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama,
Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina, and Tennessee. Since they had yet to
make a flag for their new government the Provisional Congress made the Committee on the Flag and
Seal, directed by William Porcher Miles of South Carolina. The Committee asked for ideas for the
Confederate Flag and received hundreds of designs for the flag from ... Show more content on

example, a Cherokee High School senior said, The flag stands for my heritage and pride in my
southern culture . Another said, I think it is a symbol of pride because my people stood up for
themselves (Schall). The negative statements said about the flag include, ...it represents red necks and
stupidity, (La Tona), ...it means slavery of African Americans by ruthless white men and women and
their fight to keep slavery, (Sicilia). After asking someone from Quebec, Canada who has lived in
Georgia for 30 years about their thoughts on the flag they simply answered with, It means the south to
me, nothing more.

Charles Dickens Great Expectations
Many people say that writing is nothing more than a way of the author to express himself. This is true
in many cases but none as much as in Great Expectations. In many ways the narrator/protagonist Pip
is Charles Dickens in body and mind. While there are many differences between the story and Charles
Dickens life there remains one constant. This constant is the way Pip as the narrator feels, because
these feelings are Dickens s own feelings about the life he lead. Since Great Expectations was written
towards end of Charles Dickens life, he was wiser and able to make out the mistakes and regrets of his
life, and Pip experiences them all. While Great Expectations is seen as a tragic book not many people
really think about where these themes come from, and when the book is read with the knowledge of
Dickens life it truly reveals new meanings.
Charles John Huffam Dickens born February 7th, 1812, was born a poor man. When Charles Dickens
was 12 his father John Dickens was sent to jail because he had too much debt. Since Charles father
was sent to jail Charles had to drop out of school and join a shoe blacking company. When Charles no
longer had to work he felt betrayed by his parents for making him do what was their rightful job,
taking care of the family. He thought that the second he started working for that company his youth
was gone. Once his father had received the family inheritance Charles was able to go to school again
and his father was released from jail. When

Essay about The Origins of the Cold War
The Origins of the Cold War
The Cold War was a state of extreme hostility and confrontation but without direct militant action
between the two world powers, the USSR and the USA. The USSR and the USA were originally
wartime Allies during the Second World War; however a string of events and issues caused a built up
of suspicion and distrust which finally escalated to what was known as the Cold War. The start of Cold
War can be simply defined as the period of time whereby both powers were simultaneously hostile to
each other and the idea of peaceful cooperation could not exist anymore.
Churchill s Iron Curtain Speech was a warning of Soviet influence beyond Eastern Europe. Churchill

The Truman Doctrine was an open and direct confrontation of the Soviets. In it, the Soviets were
accused of political oppression , suppression of personal freedoms and were even perceived as evil by
the Americans. Under the Doctrine, the US policy was to support people who resisted attempted
subjugation by outside pressure which meant the Soviets. The US felt the need to assist the free people
against the spread of Communism and saw the Soviets as a threat and an enemy. This was the first
concrete and coherent American foreign policy towards the USSR. There was no immediate official
response from the Soviet government. However, a few months later, the Soviet Two Camps Speech
emerged stating Soviet stand to American aggression. It stated officially that the USSR was anti
democracy. Also the need to prevent Western powers desire to dominate the world was emphasized;
therefore the policy of cooperation between the Socialist and Liberal parties would cease to exist.
Communist parties in Western European countries were told to adopt a militant anti government
stance. The USSR was no longer keen on peaceful cooperation and acknowledged the fact that the
Americans and the Soviets could no longer be allies. This marked the start of the Cold War as the
Truman Doctrine instigated and caused the end of any form of peaceful

Charlie evolves throughout the story, it is made clear that Charlie has a better life when he has a low

The study of the high crime rate in the city will include a range of research methods. I would indicate
that there is no standard threshold for what constitutes a hot spot as well no clarity about what may be
the best method to identify the area. In research of areas that may appear to be the hot spots in the city
can vary depending on the area was researched. The variance in the research would fall into the unit of
analysis, scale of the map, and the amount of data mapped. Having said that, moving forward I ll
explain the four methods that I will attempt to identify, describe, providing an example, indicate the
relationship among them and lastly indicate which one would be best for identifying the highest crime.
Each research method will be introduced to the same question in this process of (1) descriptive, (2)

Personal Freedom In The Indispensable Opposition By Walter...
Walter Lippman writes on his beliefs on the subject of personal freedom in the article The
Indispensable Opposition . The author draws from his personal knowledge and observations of natural
human interactions in order, to support the basis of his argument. He utilizes repetition of the word
freedom, an abrasive tone, and day to day natural occurrences in order to stimulate the reader into
thinking about freedom overall and how it effects themselves as a common human being. Lippmann
also uses Voltaire s enlightenment ideas to provide a rebuttal to Lippmann s ideas which he
successfully argues in order to make his opinions seem more correct. All of these strategies help to
convince the reader that freedom is taken for granted and selfishly abused when another being
displays an opinion that we don t agree with.
A useful tactic that Lippman uses throughout his article is repetition. The word that he mostly repeats
is the word freedom . He constantly reminds the audience that there is freedom of speech, freedom of
opinion, freedom of discussion because freedom of discussion improves our own opinions . He
utilizes this specific strategy in order to create a prominent image of freedom within the reader and
draw out the reader s personal feelings on freedom and overarchingly connect the audience back to the
central idea of the article. Lippman establishes his argument immediately, which makes it seem simple
and direct to the reader even though it is actually quite

War Poetry The soldier by Rupert Brooke and Dulce et decorum est by Wilfred Owen
The poems The soldier by Rupert Brooke and Dulce et decorum est by
Wilfred Owen are related to the events in WWI. These two poems concentrate on a similar subject,
going to war, but have totally different points of view and contradict each other. Rupert Brooke has a
patriotic point of view meanwhile Wilfred Owen has a critical opinion. Both of the authors use their
own knowledge to show us how soldiers confront war and what consequences do war brings to
soldiers.

By trying to explain their opinions the authors use different tool when writing the poems. Meanwhile
Rupert Brooke uses a celebrative and cheerful tone, Wilfred Owen uses a tone of darkness, fear,
suffering and terror. The authors describe totally different things. While
Brooke describes the good English people and the beautiful geography in England, Owen describes
the suffering of soldiers as the march tired and mood less ready to face their deaths. They use different
poetic devices to support their ideas. In The soldier Brooke uses a similes (e.g.: Her sights and sounds;
dreams happy as her day) meanwhile in Dulce et Decorum Est Owen uses imageries imagery (e.g.:
If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood of froth corrupted lung obscene as cancer bitter as the cud.)
and similes (e.g.:Bent double like old beggars under sacks.)
Both of the authors had their own experience in battlefields and they use these to show how they and
other soldiers feel about going to war.
Rupert Brooke and Wilfred Owen have opposite opinions as they face war with different points of
views.
. It talks about soldiers that do not want to die for their own country. They had gone to war thinking

of the way his mouth is open and because of the white paneling surrounding the space he is confined

Human beings may attempt to understand his death and what it was like, however could never really
grasp or relate since their own death has not been reached. While humans may mentally comprehend,
relate to, and be able to view death of living things around them, they are unable to completely know
what it is physically like, which is portrayed in Damien Hirst s work The Physical Impossibility of
Death in the Mind of Someone Living. The title of his work gives more meaning to the artwork itself,
which applies to titles of other pieces of art, poems, books, or movies, as well. Many people say not to
judge a book by its cover , which is actually partly true. Giving the work a quick glance or just a look
at the title is clearly not a fair way to judge, however the title is important because it gives way to
what the creator was attempting to portray. The shark in the museum and its title both allow people to
decipher what the shark itself and the title mean in various ways; however, if it was just the shark, the
artist s purpose would definitely not be depicted as well. At first glance, one may believe that the
shark is in the museum because of something special about him, such as his age or any other
specialities. Once the title is read, full meaning is given to the work and individuals see that the artist
actually created it to portray the reason that death is incomprehensible to living individuals. The role
of titles is not only important to

Importance Of Guns And The Right To Carry Guns
Guns and the right to carry them is such a debatable topic in today s society. So many different people
have their opinions on how people should use their guns or where they can and can t carry them. They
have this misconception that guns are such a big problem and that they kill people, but in reality guns
are not the problem at all it is the people holding them. Even though guns can be dangerous, guns are
used for good more than bad. Getting a conceal carry permit is something that has very precise steps
to follow in order to obtain it. You are required to be at least 21 years of age. If for some reason you
are ineligible to purchase a firearm then you are no longer able to get the permit to conceal a handgun.
A person that has been convicted of a violent misdemeanor or drunkenness in the last three years will
be rejected if applied for a conceal carry permit. As you can see a lot goes into obtaining the permit to
be able to conceal a handgun. After a very thorough background check gets cleared for the applicant
the court may require proof that the applicant can demonstrate competence with a handgun. This
includes: completion of a firearm training course offered by the NRA, the state, or school (Virginia
Gun Laws). Also a lot more goes into it. Many choose to conceal carry instead of open carry for a
couple of different reasons. When you conceal a handgun nobody knows you have the gun. If a
criminal comes to rob a gas station that you are in and sees a handgun on your hip

Analysis Of The Book The Lottery
Austin Walker
Erickson
English 12
20 November 2014
Blind Tradition Every society in the modern world has some form of tradition that has been passed
down from generation to generation, and no matter what the custom is, people will continue to follow
it due to the human nature to resist change. Even if there is an urge for change, it will likely be
suppressed and seen as an act of rebellion as most people follow tradition simply because that s just
how it is , and never seem to question why. Suzanne Collin s novel The Hunger Games and Shirley
Jackson s short story The Lottery best illustrate this point by showing how a violent annual tradition
affects a society and its innocent people. The Hunger Games has such uncanny similarities to The
Lottery that it almost seems as if Collins used Jackson s story as a source of inspiration for her novel.
Both The Hunger Games and The Lottery are extremely similar thematically in the sense that
sheepishly following tradition can often be detrimental to society because it can lead to adverse
consequences such as death, ignorance, and a society with no desire to change. Although both works
are very much identical, the primary distinguishing characteristics are the setting and tone. The
Lottery takes place in a small village with about three hundred inhabitants, while The Hunger Games
involves a much larger post apocalyptic world consisting of thirteen districts known as Panem. In The
Lottery , the introduction presents itself

It is highly prevalent affecting people of all ages, gender, cultures, and social groups. Attitudes towards mental health illnesses vary among individuals and often are highly influenced by the various cultures that the individuals identify with. Culture as a social concept can be defined as a set of norms, values, behaviours, and beliefs that are common and shared amongst a group of individuals (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 1999). Culture can be applicable to groups like Asians and Americans but also to groups of shared norms, beliefs, and values established within professions such as the culture of patients and practitioners. Culture provides these groups with structure and context to understanding their society and the world as a whole. Culture influence a wide range of aspects of mental health, including how mental health is perceived by the patient, how the patient will experience mental health stigma, and how they cope with symptoms of mental health illness. • 5. Cluelessness In Clueless Clueless of her own Cluelessness The iconic release of Amy Heckerling s production of Clueless (1995), dramatized the struggles of a typical, rich American princess Cher Horowitz. Her story is set in Beverly Hills, California where she comes from an affluent home headed by her father who is a lawyer. Being in high school, Cher is popular amongst her peers and that in addition to her wealthy background are big parts in upkeeping her lavish lifestyle. Cher is obviously intelligent, yet still so naive; most of her focus and energy is spent in hopes to achieve meaningless goals such as getting the boy she likes in the moment or having designer clothes. Though she does maintain the egocentric, sort of superficial mindset throughout most of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... And this is confirmed by her father, in the times she makes sure he is eating healthy and taking medication as suggested by their doctor, etc. This suggests the idea that Cher might not be as self centered and naive as she seems. Cher s taking upon the role of caring for her father comes from the obvious lack of a maternal figure in their household. Later, in the narrative Cher finds that she wants to help people and ends up offering the new girl at school a makeover. Whether or not Cher realizes what she had done at that moment, is unknown to the audience. But in suggesting that Tai had character traits that needed changing in order to fit into Beverly hills norms that might differ from ones in the Bronx [where Tai initially is from]. It was that moment that marked the beginning of Tai s assimilation to higher social status. Cher told Tai that they needed to work on that accent , after they changed her hair color amongst other things. This all stems from Cher s presumption that Tai needed help to fit into the new school she was attending, though Tai never asked for their help in the beginning. Ironically, Cher mentions how clueless she thinks Tai is, when she really was the one that had been clueless all long. However, it would be interesting to question Cher s true intentions of that makeover. Because throughout the narrative, Cher and Dionne who would be considered the popular girls , are depicted to be kindhearted and humanitarian. As opposed to the teen movies that followed Clueless, less than a decade later such as Mark Waters production of Mean Girls (2004) in which the popular girls are antagonists in the film; who are much less forgiving and ... • 6. Comparing The Lewinsky Scandal In The Human Stain By... Near the beginning of the novel, The Human Stain by Philip Roth, the Lewinsky Scandal is introduced and discussed in great detail. The narrator indicates his feelings towards the forty second president of The United States, Bill Clinton, and his affair with a White House employee. This woman, named Monica Lewinsky, was twenty two years old when the political scandal was made public, while President Clinton was forty nine years old. The Human Stain is set in 1998, which is the same year that the scandal became known to the public and President Bill Clinton was impeached. However, the author also introduces the Lewinsky Scandal because an equally astonishing affair has been revealed in a small, quiet New England town. The author essentially compares the two affairs in order to show how significant the affair between the two characters from the novel, Coleman Silk and Faunia Farley, actually is. I also think that the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Faunia Farley goes to visit the specific bird at the Audubon Society. Faunia also reveals that she has known Prince for quite some time by saying, I used to live in Seeley Falls, so I know all about Prince. I knew him when he was up there hanging around Higgison s store (Roth 239 240). During her visit with Prince, Faunia questions Prince s caretaker regarding the newspaper clippings about the crow. The young girl responded by saying that Prince had torn down the articles that were posted on the wall because He didn t want anybody to know his background! (Roth 240). I found this to be particularly interesting because both Faunia and Coleman are guilty of hiding or lying about aspects in their lives. Faunia tells everyone that she is illiterate, when she could, in actuality, read and write. This lie is revealed when her diary is discovered. Coleman is also ashamed of his past as he tries to pass as a white man, even though he is an African ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Model Respect Respect is one of the most important social skills that a person can have therefore it is educators and parents to model to the young children what is respect. Before we do anything to the child we should acknowledge them what we are about to do to them for example before moving the child from the floor to the crib, caregivers should tell them what we are about to do to. In order to model respect to a child, we must respect infants and toddlers as worthy people An example of a respect interaction that I encountered was sitting outside of James Hall, in Brooklyn College. There was a mom and a boy toddler (around two years old). The mom was holding the boy s hand and was walking into the building. The mom was also giving the boy pieces of cut ... • 10. The Day Of The World Country Living in a 1st world country we never really think outside our borders, we mainly only realize our problems in our country. Which could be anything from not being able to eat tomorrow to my parents won t buy me the latest iPhone . Each country has their poor and their wealthy. Sure, we see those commercials of starving 3rd world country children, who have little to nothing and we feel horrible. We hear about wars and see the horrible tragedies they face but we will never fully understand the horror or devastation they ve lived through until we walk in their shoes. We always find the things we see on the news appalling, but truth is most of us won t do anything. After Paul thanks Jack, a photographer he replies I think if people see this footage they ll say, oh my God that s horrible, and then go on eating their dinners (Hotel Rwanda). It doesn t mean we are bad people, we all have our own struggles and strife. We are all human, and to be human means different things to different people. I believe that this film showed both sides of the human condition, one being a genuinely decent human and the other showing people striped of all right or wrong conciseness. You would always think why don t people stop this kind of brutality? and why don t they have a sense of wrong?! The Hutu s may have had parents or guardians who installed in them that sense of hate, or someone had a way with words and persuaded them that the Tutsi s were their rivals. Just like Hitler ... He came to be known as the Father of Realism , as he left his mark on literature, being the first one to portray authentic moments in American life. He tells the stories of many faces he saw in his dreams, describing their deeply moving lives filled with secrets. The twenty one stories in the novel are united through the setting, Winesburg, and the main character, George Willard. The novel is character driven, and the stories have very weak plots. The only person with whom he develops a kind of friendship was George Willard. During a conversation with him, Biddlebaum leaves saying, I can t talk no more with you, (15) because the anguish from the tragic memory overtook him. However, he still hungered for the presence of the boy, who was the medium through which he expressed his love of man (15). He runs away from George, but he still wishes his company; this manifestation makes him lonelier and more isolated. Wing Biddlebaum is gifted with a quality that cannot be seen in most of (us) the people. During the flash back, when the story goes back to the past and looks at the days when he used to be a teacher at Pennsylvania, Biddlbaum was one of those rare, little understood men who rule by a power so gentle that it passes as a lovable weakness (14). These fragment reveals that he was one of the few people who can not only perceive other people s feelings, but can also teach them how to dream. Biddlbaum s voice and hands, the stroking of the shoulders and the touching of the hair were a part of the [his] effort to carry a dream into the young minds. • 12. Increasing the Diversity of Plants According to the Simpson s diversity index calculations of all the sites in figure 7, Site 3 had the highest index reading of 0.701 out of 1. With 1 being the highest possible value, it indicates very high diversity while 0; the lowest possible value, indicates no/very low diversity. This suggests that 0.701 is a high reading, indicating high diversity of plant species. The analysis of the first hypothesis There is a direct correlation between the diversity of plant species and the relative humidity at each site , will help explain why site 3 had the highest diversity index reading when compared to the other sites. To answer this hypothesis, data will be used from graphs in figure 2, 3 and 4. It can be suggested from figure 2, 3 and 4 that the abiotic conditions of site 3 have proven to increase the diversity of plants when compared to other sites. For plant A, according to figure 2, the humidity (rH) decreases from 64% in site 2 to 50.1% at site 3 while the total number of plant A increases from 9 in site 2 to 80 in site 3. Even though the diversity of plant A increases with a decreased relative humidity in Lamma Island, this is not supposed to occur in general according to theory as higher levels of relative humidity are supposed to increase biodiversity, not decrease biodiversity. Theory suggests that a higher level of humidity is supposed to decrease the effect of solar radiation while a lower level of humidity is supposed to increase the effect of solar ... • 13. The Book Thief Good Vs Evil Henry David Thoreau once said, Justice is sweet and musical; but injustice is harsh and discordant. Whenever there are complications and divided opinions in the world, nobody is at rest; because of rallies, protests, fights, and angry mobs. But when justice is achieved, people can relax, even if for the smallest amount of time. Thus, to reach times of joy and happiness, people need to overcome evil through strong efforts as a whole; but, defeating evil takes more than just rallying together. There are many obstacles along the path of achieving justice, that forestall the good men s endeavors. Some argue that the key to evil s success is either for good men to do nothing, or for evil to fight stronger. Edmund Burke, a political theorist, believes ... But an outlier, Hans Hubermann, sees the starved prisoners and presents a piece of bread, to a Jewish man (Zusak 394). Hans gives hope to the prisoner that there are still people out there, willing to help others out. He makes the man feel like a human, alive and thankful again. However, Hans kindness comes to a halt when he is brutally whipped on the street by a German soldier (Zusak 394). Even when Hans attempts to be a good samaritan, his plans are crushed by the authority of the Nazis. Additionally, Hans later on regrets his decision to help the Jewish man, and worries that Max will be taken away by the Nazis; so he sends Max away, to escape. When Hans acts, he does not solve injustice he only worsens it, by putting Max and his family in possible danger. Therefore, good men ultimately do not reach complete justice, because some things are out of their control. They are the external index for individuals consciousness. Some criticisms claimed that such index does not represent social currents or phenomena because they are merely the aggregate of individual datum. • 34. Study Of The High Crime Rate The study of the high crime rate in the city will include a range of research methods. I would indicate that there is no standard threshold for what constitutes a hot spot as well no clarity about what may be the best method to identify the area. In research of areas that may appear to be the hot spots in the city can vary depending on the area was researched. The variance in the research would fall into the unit of analysis, scale of the map, and the amount of data mapped. Having said that, moving forward I ll explain the four methods that I will attempt to identify, describe, providing an example, indicate the relationship among them and lastly indicate which one would be best for identifying the highest crime. Each research method will be introduced to the same question in this process of (1) descriptive, (2) exploratory, (3) explanatory, and (4) quantitative research. These research methods will provide an interactively to provide an understanding of the question presented for the investigation ( Criminology and criminal justice research: methods, 2016). • 35. Personal Freedom In The Indispensable Opposition By Walter... Walter Lippman writes on his beliefs on the subject of personal freedom in the article The Indispensable Opposition . The author draws from his personal knowledge and observations of natural human interactions in order, to support the basis of his argument. He utilizes repetition of the word freedom, an abrasive tone, and day to day natural occurrences in order to stimulate the reader into thinking about freedom overall and how it effects themselves as a common human being. Lippmann also uses Voltaire s enlightenment ideas to provide a rebuttal to Lippmann s ideas which he successfully argues in order to make his opinions seem more correct. All of these strategies help to convince the reader that freedom is taken for granted and selfishly abused when another being displays an opinion that we don t agree with. A useful tactic that Lippman uses throughout his article is repetition. The word that he mostly repeats is the word freedom . He constantly reminds the audience that there is freedom of speech, freedom of opinion, freedom of discussion because freedom of discussion improves our own opinions . He utilizes this specific strategy in order to create a prominent image of freedom within the reader and draw out the reader s personal feelings on freedom and overarchingly connect the audience back to the central idea of the article. Lippman establishes his argument immediately, which makes it seem simple and direct to the reader even though it is actually quite ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 37. Upon first glance of this image, a large shark is... Upon first glance of this image, a large shark is displayed that is enclosed in a rectangular tunnel like space. It is unclear where exactly this space is located, however it is most likely not in an aquarium because the space is too small and there are no other fish, marine like organisms, or marine characteristics around the shark. The shark is probably dead and preserved to be up on display because of the way his mouth is open and because of the white paneling surrounding the space he is confined to. Considering that the shark is in a museum, there must be something remarkable or idiosyncratic about him, such as his size, breed, capabilities, or place of death. Upon second glance of a more expansive display of this image, along with a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Human beings may attempt to understand his death and what it was like, however could never really grasp or relate since their own death has not been reached. While humans may mentally comprehend, relate to, and be able to view death of living things around them, they are unable to completely know what it is physically like, which is portrayed in Damien Hirst s work The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living. The title of his work gives more meaning to the artwork itself, which applies to titles of other pieces of art, poems, books, or movies, as well. Many people say not to judge a book by its cover , which is actually partly true. Giving the work a quick glance or just a look at the title is clearly not a fair way to judge, however the title is important because it gives way to what the creator was attempting to portray. The shark in the museum and its title both allow people to decipher what the shark itself and the title mean in various ways; however, if it was just the shark, the artist s purpose would definitely not be depicted as well. At first glance, one may believe that the shark is in the museum because of something special about him, such as his age or any other specialities. Once the title is read, full meaning is given to the work and individuals see that the artist actually created it to portray the reason that death is incomprehensible to living individuals. • 38. Importance Of Guns And The Right To Carry Guns Guns and the right to carry them is such a debatable topic in today s society. So many different people have their opinions on how people should use their guns or where they can and can t carry them. They have this misconception that guns are such a big problem and that they kill people, but in reality guns are not the problem at all it is the people holding them. Even though guns can be dangerous, guns are used for good more than bad. Getting a conceal carry permit is something that has very precise steps to follow in order to obtain it. You are required to be at least 21 years of age. If for some reason you are ineligible to purchase a firearm then you are no longer able to get the permit to conceal a handgun. A person that has been convicted of a violent misdemeanor or drunkenness in the last three years will be rejected if applied for a conceal carry permit. As you can see a lot goes into obtaining the permit to be able to conceal a handgun. After a very thorough background check gets cleared for the applicant the court may require proof that the applicant can demonstrate competence with a handgun. This includes: completion of a firearm training course offered by the NRA, the state, or school (Virginia Gun Laws). Also a lot more goes into it. • 39. Analysis Of The Book The Lottery Austin Walker Erickson English 12 20 November 2014 Blind Tradition Every society in the modern world has some form of tradition that has been passed down from generation to generation, and no matter what the custom is, people will continue to follow it due to the human nature to resist change. Even if there is an urge for change, it will likely be suppressed and seen as an act of rebellion as most people follow tradition simply because that s just how it is , and never seem to question why. Suzanne Collin s novel The Hunger Games and Shirley Jackson s short story The Lottery best illustrate this point by showing how a violent annual tradition affects a society and its innocent people. The Hunger Games has such uncanny similarities to The Lottery that it almost seems as if Collins used Jackson s story as a source of inspiration for her novel. Both The Hunger Games and The Lottery are extremely similar thematically in the sense that sheepishly following tradition can often be detrimental to society because it can lead to adverse consequences such as death, ignorance, and a society with no desire to change. Although both works are very much identical, the primary distinguishing characteristics are the setting and tone. The Lottery takes place in a small village with about three hundred inhabitants, while The Hunger Games involves a much larger post apocalyptic world consisting of thirteen districts known as Panem. In The Lottery , the introduction presents itself ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
