Assignment One. “To View Language As Though It Were An
Assignment One to view language as though it were an object, devoid of the social context of its
creation and use, is to dislocate it from the field of human interaction within which language derives
the full quality of its meanings... (Grugeon and Gardner 2000: 105) Language is a mixed bag of
contradictions which all of society use to address the specific needs of their group. A teacher s role is
extreme in the process of understanding language. It is not enough to merely consider the cultural
context in which the speaker emerges, teachers must understand the implications arising from such
circumstances, and how they present in the classroom. Socio cultural factors such as religion, sex and
social class play a significant ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, to grasp the full meaning of language, Gee conveys the need to view language as a three
dimensional object, requiring human interaction and social context as the further dimensions. Without
human interaction and social context, language is merely an object void of any meaning. It is hard to
find any characteristics of society that plays a role as fundamental as language does (Hudson, 1996, p.
4). Language is therefore seen as more than a tool to communicate. Language is an identity used
distinctly by different groups to recognise people with parallel values and beliefs who share similar
qualities. Vygotsky explains cognitive development as a socially mediated activity which occurs
during social interaction (O Donnell et al. 2016. p. 101). By providing us with this description,
Vygotsky is reinforcing the fundamental role our social settings play in contributing to student s
overall development. Gee explains an important factor of why he believes some student s do not
succeed in the classroom. A Discourse, as illustrated by Gee is a network of people that shares a
similar way of using language, of valuing, acting and thinking, these traits make the group easily
identifiable (Green, 2006. p.3). While there are many benefits of belonging to a group, Children can
be identified as failures if the Discourse is unfamiliar to them. All cultures are diverse in one aspect or
another. Many have different beliefs, ideologies and rules which help us identify different

The Importance Of Music On Music
Studies have shown that music helps improve memory, increase focus, helps you become more
creative, reduces stress, increases your IQ, and stimulates both left and right brain while studying.
Music has been proven scientifically to have beneficial effects on mental development. The Dana
Foundation studied the impact of listening to music while taking a test and the scores improved when
students were listening to music. While music can help you focus it can also impact and regulate your
mood and the best mood to take a test in is a relaxed mood. The four music types we are doing our
project on are classical, rock, country, and pop. Studies have shown that Baroque music is the best for
stimulating learning, research and work. Baroque music is a type of classical music and is known as
the best music to listen to when learning and working as said before. The most important is the type of
noise and music. We have found that music you enjoy listening to increases focus and music you don t
enjoy listening to impedes focus.
The first type of music that we researched is classical music. We found that people who listen to
classical music have a high self esteem and can focus more when testing at any time. Classical music
is known for helping you calm down and relax your nerves while it also helps you focus. We have two
attention systems that are the complete opposite of each other. One is called the conscious side and it
helps us direct our focus towards things such as tests,

Group Disconnection
During the initial stages our classes group process meeting, group member interactions brought to the
surface this notion of responsibility. For the purposes of confidentiality, I will refer to the individuals
as member X and member Y. Member X was asked by the group leader to elaborate on a feeling by
using one word. Although done in a caring way, member X was not able to completely grasp the
request without storytelling. For the purposes of achieving more congruency in expression, the group
leader used caring confrontation. Subsequently, this skillful application of confrontation, while
keeping the focus on the present, allowed member X to go deeper in self expression. In addition,
member Xs willingness to trust (1) the leader, (2) the process, and (3) self, also assisted in the
outcomes possibility. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As a result, there was an immediate reaction regarding the apparent disconnection. In this instance, the
group leader expressed her observation and used facilitation in inviting the group to share their
feelings. Despite this, member Y s verbal and non verbal cues remained out of sync. With both
member s, the group leader demonstrated caring confrontation, giving feedback, and facilitation.
Caring confrontation when expressing the conflict between the verbal and non verbal cues and the
blockage of in depth self expression. Giving feedback when encouraging the other group members to
give feedback. Lastly, facilitating when encouraging the member s to establish a goal around the issue
discussed. In spite of the group leaders, non abrasive, non intimidating approach, avoidance behavior

Social Medi Destroying The American Youth Of Today Essay
Jocelyn Lizardo Mr. Somers ERWC 18 November 2014 Social Media Social media might be
destroying the American youth of today. Social media are several websites and applications created so
people may commutate, collaborate, or share information through social networking. Enough though
social media sounds great, there are big issues such as, cyber bullying, lower grades, and wasting an
incredible amount of time. These are things we should all be cautious about when we allow younger
folks enter the world of social media. Initially, social media is commonly used as a weapon to attack
others on their opinions or simply because they despite other people. For instance, cyber bullying has
caused huge problems ever since social networks have started becoming popular. Nearly 43% of kids
have been bullied online. 1 in 4 has had it happen more than once, ( 11 Facts about Cyber Bullying
www.dosomething.org). This is more targeted at teenagers and children because they are unaware of
the harmful things they might say over the internet. To illustrate, cyber bullying can become a very
serious issue when a minor commits suicide. Bully related suicide can be connected to any type of
bullying, including . . . cyberbullying, and sexting, or circulating suggestive . . . about a person (
Cyber Bullying Social Bullying http://www.bullyingstatistics.org). It s the parent s duty to filter the

Cultural Artifacts In The Wizard Of Oz
Cultural Artifacts
My first work is the American film, The Wizard of Oz, directed by Viktor Fleming. The film was
released in 1939 and is also a musical. The screenplay was written by Noel Langley, Florence
Ryerson, and Edgar Allan Woolf. The music was written and composed by Herbert Rosson. The film
is based on the book, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, written by L. Frank Baum. It is set at the turn of
the 20th century in Kansas and then in the Land of Oz. My second work is the book, The Lion, The
Witch and The Wardrobe, written by the English writer, C.S. Lewis and published in 1950. It is the
Scholastic edition from 1995. The book is set during World War Two in the English country side and
then then magical world of Narnia where time is different and therefore cannot be compared to any
time period of the real world.
Common Theme
The common theme I will be exploring is Good vs. Evil . The theme is expressed in The Wizard of Oz
throughout the movie through the use of the antagonist, the Wicked Witch of the West pursuing the
main character, Dorothy, for the shoes she wears (Fleming LeRoy, 1939). The Wicked Witch wants the
shoes for herself because they hold great power, but also because they belonged to her sister, The
Wicked Witch of the East (Fleming LeRoy, 1939). However, Glinda The Good Witch of the North,
gifts them to Dorothy after she traveled to Oz, in her house and through a cyclone (Fleming LeRoy,
1939). The house landed on the Wicked Witch of the East and

Value Chain of H M Essay
H amp;M s value chain:
The value chain, made by Michael Porter, is really important to see how a company structure is
created. The value chain is constituted by two parts: support activities (firm infrastructure, human
resource management, technology development, procurement) and primary activities (inbound
logistic, operations, outbound logistic, marketing and sales, service). (Johnson et al. 2011, p.97 99)
Support activities: * Firm infrastructure: H amp;M is present in 44 markets in the world, holds more
than 2,500 stores and employs over 94,000 people. Its head office is located in Stockholm, Sweden
where there also are the main departments for finance, buying and design, advertising, accounts,

Nevertheless, H amp;M could keep progressing in its online store. Indeed, even if H amp;M is present
in 44 countries, only 8 have access to the online store (Sweden, Germany, UK, Norway, Denmark,
Austria, USA and Netherlands). Increasing it, H amp;M could increase its sales a lot. * Procurement:
As it is the second Europe s cloth retailer company, for the production H amp;M uses a lot of material
and workers so its mains recourses are material, labour and energy. That is why small changes in
prices can affect the company s profit a lot, and the fact that it does not own any manufactories causes
some problems in controlling the production s prices. However, not owning the factories can be an
advantage in some cases. Indeed, if a problem appears, H amp;M can easily change its suppliers.
Moreover, due to its huge size, H amp;M can easily manipulate with its suppliers to have the best
quality at the lowest production s price.
Primary activities: * Inbound logistic: One of the core values of H amp;M is the sustainability, and,
thus, sustainability in production. The aim of H amp;M is to offer good quality fashion at the best
price and to achieve it, H amp;M tries to avoid the waste. In this purpose, all the waste coming from
the manufacturing, the transport and other sources are planned to be reused, recycled and reduced.(H

Chloramines Lab Report
Conclusion and evaluation
Investigating the effect of pH on the concentration of chloramines and evaluating their effects in pool
water was the aim of this experiment and research. With the data collected and processed, I can now
discuss the extent of influence of pH in chloramine treatment as well as the success of this experiment.
The experiment prove that pH is a very crucial agent in cleaning of a pool. A pound for pound
efficiency is almost guaranteed for chlorine administered in any form if proper pH management is
considered. Looking at the dissociation of hypochlorous acid under different pH values, it can be
proven that the lower the pH the better the efficacy of chlorine. Calcium hypochlorite itself raises the

Lethal Anti Cancer Drugs And The Treatment Of Treatment
Chemotherapy is employed as part of a multimodal approach to the treatment of many tumors (Copra,
2016, pp.1). During the process of chemotherapy very potent anti cancer drugs are used to interfere
with the cancer cells ability to produce new DNA. There are approximately fifty different forms of
chemotherapy that can be intermixed to provide the most efficient treatment of the cancer cells. They
can receive chemotherapy medication orally or through an IV. If an IV is used, the patients are
physically stuck with a needle during treatment, but due to the repetitive sticks, the veins cannot
withstand that process for any length of time. In those cases, the patient can choose to have a life port

By taking other medications for nausea and low blood count, it can minimize many of the side effects
caused by the chemotherapy. Even with the alternative medications, the patient may still suffer from
the side effects. The long term side effects are, but not limited to, the development of other cancers, or
permanent damage many vital organs such as the lungs and kidneys within the body. Finding ways to
combat the damage from long term cellular damage can be impossible. (Chopra, 2016; Schulmeister,
2014) Studies have shown that females will tend to have a higher rate of adverse reactions with the
use of chemotherapy over males. Over fifty one percent of adverse reactions are listed as not
preventable, forty two percent as probably avoidable, and only a mere seven percent are listed as
preventable. With advancements in chemotherapy growing, so do the adverse reactions. The drugs are
becoming more intense, and they offer a higher success rate with a lower risk of re occurrence. The
unfortunate side is the greater adverse reactions, such as nausea/vomiting, anemia, alopecia,
constipation/ diarrhea, and fatigue. (Chopra, 2016; Schulmeister, 2014)

Today s Competitive Postal Service
Running Head: Today s Competitive Postal Service 2 The United States Postal Service began
operations in 1971 following the passing of the Postal Reorganization Act of 1970. In the decades that
have followed, the Postal Service has tried to remain relevant in a competitive business environment.
In order to be successful at this, a revamping of the agency was necessary in order to keep up with
advances in technology used by business and individuals, and to address an overall change in the
public attitude regarding old fashioned mail services. This transformation of the Postal Service has
been successful because of progressive management and effective leadership. Management and
leadership are not the same thing, however they are interrelated and complementary. Shafritz, Russell
and Borick (2010, pp. 361 362) state, Leadership is the exercise of authority, whether formal or
informal in directing and coordinating the work of others. Management involves power (usually
formal authority) ...with the power of management comes responsibility and accountability for the use
of organizational resources. In order be transformed, the Postal Service needed to implement new
management ideas combined with the pioneering concepts of new leadership. The power and authority
to implement new ideas and provide innovative leadership is held by the 11 member Board of
Governors of the Postal Service. According to The United States Postal Service website, As

Comparison Of The Sabines, Titian s Rape Of Europa
Poussin s Rape of the Sabines, Titian s Rape of Europa, or other paintings depict an assailant,
commonly a Greek or Roman god or hero, raping a female in a beautiful and heroic love manner. This
type of image also viewed as a heroic rape, has always received considerable attention. Initially from
Greek mythology, the story of Castor and Pollux is an anecdote of the great twin brethren interested in
two beautiful daughters, Phoebe and Hilaeira, as their wives. Disregarding the fact that these girls
were betrothed to their cousins Lynceus and Idas, they carried the girls off to Sparta. Abduction,
sexual violation, and defilement caused the fatal quarrel between the brothers and the brother s
cousins. Visually stunning, Rubens depicts this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Rubens s painting shows to be an example of arrogant, masculine dominance over weak, feminine
submission. However, there is eroticism in the lighting and brush strokes, which in contrast to the
context of the story, the central female figures appear to have some level of sexual energy and tension
with the male figures. Ruben renders the soft face maidens in such a manner that they do not
energetically resist the male figures. Although these characteristics correspond with the mythological
scene that is taking place, this new interpretation also seems to have more psychoanalytical
significance as well. Sigmund Freud expressed and refined the concepts of the unconscious, infantile
sexuality, repression, and proposed a theory of the human brain s structure, all part of understanding
the human psychological development and treating mental

My Passion For Architectural Design
I have always had a passion for being practical for as long as I can remember, I often sought pleasure
from helping my parents build dreaded flat pack furniture. Over the years this passion for being
practical and building things has just developed into a love for structures and especially in the last few
I have been able to hone my passion down to architecture. What could be greater than wanting to
design these great edifices and seeing your design built for people to integrate into part of the lives.
My application to your university derives from my eagerness to study at one of the best universities in
the UK and from my desire to create well designed spaces that are both practical and gratifying to the
eye. It also hopes to ensure a satisfaction for my passion for practicality, my appreciation of
architecture and hopefully in the future it should secure me a place among some of the architectural
greats.
As a designer, I am constantly studying the world around me and looking at ways in which I can
change and mould it to make it more appealing and suitable for the tasks we undertake in our
everyday lives. This is reflected in my Extended Project Qualification that I completed earlier this year
which looks into the influence of architecture on human behaviour and how this compelling link
between the health and satisfaction of the human body that is largely determined by the fundamental
design of buildings can often be ignored by many of the architectural designers today.

In 1159, Kiyomori of the Taira clan was victorious over the Minamoto clan. Kiyomori murdered all
the adults of the Monamoto clan and forced the children into exile. The emperor rewarded Kiyomori
victory by giving him an advisor position in the government. This event was significant because
Kiyomori was the first warrior in Japan s government. Like the Fujiwara family, Kiyomori desired a
royal bloodline within the Taira clan. So the Taira clan consorted with the imperial family in efforts to
secure an imperial bloodline. Later, Kiyomori obtain a higher government position and more
importantly a grandson was born and is heir to the throne. Feeling cheated an imperial prince sought
the exiled Minamoto to overthrow the Taria clan. In 1180, Yoritomo of the Minamoto clan formed an

Marilyn Manson has been pushing the envelope of the right to freedom of expression since his

most of society, as it cannot understand what he is trying to achieve. Many people believe that Marilyn
Manson is bizarre, seeing him wearing women s clothing, applying heavy facial makeup, and covering
himself with jewelry. His success can be attributed not only to his entertainment abilities, but even
more so to the incredible marketing campaign organized to promote himself and his crazy actions. His

Manson also begins to experience his sexuality with women. From his school experiences to his
involvement with sexuality, Manson begins terrorizing the people who have mistreated him. He
started to experiment with black magic, began an enduring drug habit, and displayed his disgust for
mainstream citizens by stealing from stores. All of this is what Brian Warner was, and who Marilyn
Manson was to become. (Long, Manson and Strauss)
As Manson s reputation developed, so did the disturbance surrounding him and his actions. His
concerts were regularly protested by civil rights groups, and his music was the target attacks from
religious and more specifically, Christian groups. This image was created using Manson s genius for
marketing. At the peak of this controversy, Manson had a cover story in Rolling Stone Magazine as
well as a best selling autobiography: The Long Hard Road Out of Hell.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise

Stress Is The Body s Way Of Demand
Stress is the body s way of responding to any kind of demand. People s bodies react in different ways
to stress depending on how the view and handle the demand. Stress can be caused by multiple factors
such as friends, family, jobs, schools, and worldview. The way we handle the different stresses of life
can either greatly improve our quality of life or harm it. There are two forms of coping with stress and
the first is problem focused coping. This form of coping is aimed at managing or correcting the
distressing situation (Coon, Psychology: modules for active learning). Then there is emotion focused
coping where we try to control the emotions caused by the situation. Both forms of coping can be used
in unison with each other. Being able to control your emotions could help you manage the stress in
your life. However, it is possible for the two methods to cancel each other out. When making a
difficult decision, a person may feel an intense form of emotional distress. In this moment, making an
easy decision seems like the best option to end the suffering but the easy decision might not be the
best one. The easy way out may cause later harm to a person s physical and mental wellbeing. The
harmful effects of stress on the human body is limitless. When under stress muscles in the body tense
up and become rigid. This is a defense mechanism used by the body to prevent injury. Frequent stress
and muscle tensing can potentially lead to stress related disorders such as ulcers,

aspects within an organization such as finances, the business prospective, short and long term goals,

The NFL Protest Argument
During the pre season of the 2016 National Football League season, San Francisco 49ers quarterback
Colin Kaepernick sat for the National Anthem to protest racial injustice within the United States.
When asked why he sat, he stated, I ve been very clear from the beginning that I m against the
systematic oppression of black Americans (Willingham). The quarterback received some negative
reaction to his method of protest and, after three games, met with former NFL player and Army
veteran Nate Boyer to discuss his protest. During this meeting, Kaepernick agreed with Boyer and
decided kneeling during the anthem was a more respectful form of protest (Willingham). Since that
time, many NFL players joined Kaepernick in his protest and continue to kneel during the playing of
the anthem. Through this silent, non violent protest, many uncomfortable questions are now at the
forefront of American cultural discussion. To date, Kaepernick alone has paid a price for the protest
actions as currently he is not playing in the NFL since no team would dare sign such a controversial
player. In addition, the President of the United States, Donald Trump, recently jumped into the debate
during a speech calling any player who kneels a son of a bitch and stating they should lose their jobs
(Jenkins). The President also inferred the protests are disrespectful to the American flag and to the
members of the United States military. This background on the NFL protests raises several questions

The Work Of Nina Simone
Nina Simone was born Eunice Kathleen Waymon, February 21, 1933 in North Carolina. The sixth of
eight children, she began playing the piano at the age of three and showed extreme talent for classical
music. Due to the poverty of her family, her mother worked as a maid. Nina showed her talent to her
mother s employer, who recognized her great ability and started a fund to pay for Nina s piano lessons
and early education. When she was twelve she performed a classical piano recital. Her parents had
taken two front seats to proudly watch their daughter, but were forced to move to the back row in
favor of the white attendants of the concert. Nina refused to play a single note until her parents
regained their seats. She later cited this incident as one of the main reasons she became a Civil Rights
activist.
After high school, she was given a partial scholarship to Julliard School in New York City. She left
Julliard, due to lack of funds, began to play jazz and blues, and made ends meet playing in night clubs.
Shortly after, she took on the stage name Nina Simone. She was able to release her first album, Little
Blue Girl , in 1958. With this album she was able to gain influential African Americans, like Langston
Hughes and James Baldwin, as fans of her work.

Summary Of The Anchor Bible
In the Anchor Bible, Joesph A. Fitzmyer interprets the Gospel according to Luke. Fitzmyer starts with
Jesus continuing his journey through towns and villages and he is teach and continuing towards
Jerusalem. In verse 23 someone asked him, Sir is it true that only a few are to be saved? Jesus answers
to them in verse 24, Strive to enter through the narrow door, for many, I tell you, will seek to get in,
but will not be able to. Luke carries on to the second part of his account with Jesus statements about
salvation and reception or non reception into the kingdom (Luke 13:22 30) these statements give an
outlook for the whole second part which are closely linked with the two final parables which ended

In these verses Fitzmyer finds similarities in passages in the Gospel according to Matthew. Verse 24
resembles the Mathhean sermon on the mount where Jesus talks about two gates and two ways which
lead to life or destruction. Luke s version only speaks of a narrow door, however both have to do with
a door. He believes Luke may have modified his source to create a tie. In the Sacra Pagina passages
Luke Timothy Johnson and Daniel J. Harrington give us an interpretation on Luke 13:23 24 also.
Johnson and Harrington feel this section gives the reader a challenge to stay committed to Luke s
validity in his gospel. Much like Joesph A. Fitzmyer s interpretation of the Gospel according to Luke
in the Anchor Bible, Luke s twist on 13:22 is very evident. Jesus in again on his journey to Jerusalem.

different types of stories. The first story is what we will focus on. We find two extremes of who will
be at the banquet which is the kingdom of God. Those who will be included and those who will be
excluded we find in Luke 13:23 30. Luke 13:23 Someone said to him, Lord, are those who are being
saved few in number? In saying someone, Johnson and Harrington believe this refers to a statement

Avoid Automatic Car Washes
When it comes to advertising your business, vehicle wraps can be among the most economical
options. Whenever your company vehicle is driving, these wraps allow everyone around it to see your
business s sign and contact information. However, it should be noted that these wraps require some
protective care to ensure they always look appealing to prospective customers. If you are unfamiliar
with the care requirements for these wraps, the following couple of tips may help you to extend the
usable life and protect the appearance of your business s wrap.
Avoid Automatic Car Washes
You will eventually need to wash your company car, but if you have a vehicle wrap, you may want to
avoid using an automatic car wash for this task. This is particularly ... Show more content on

This will ensure that your car looks as good as possible without accidentally ruining or otherwise
damaging its wrap.
Apply Vehicle Wrap Finish Every Few Months
In addition to being careful when you wash the wrap, you will also need to apply a new coat of
protective finish to the wrap every few months. These coatings will help reduce the chances that the
wrap suffers a tear due to flying road debris. Also, the coating will help to prevent the sun s intense
rays from bleaching the color out of your wrap.
These finishes can be purchased from most automotive supply stores, and you will need to ensure that
the vehicle has been thoroughly washed before applying the finish. If you apply the finish to a dirty
exterior, it may not form a strong bond with the wrap, which will inhibit its protection.
Having a vehicle wrap placed over your company car can be one of the most cost effective forms of
advertising that you can utilize. However, you may not be aware of the type of care that a vehicle
wrap needs to keep it looking good. Making sure that you avoid automatic car washes and apply a
protective finish every few months will help you to keep your wrap safe from common sources of
damages and

Immersion Reflection Paper
A recent experience of mine that has made a significant impact on who I am today would be my
joining of open immersion. Immersion has always been a tradition of my school, Assumption College,
for many years. This became one of many reasons why I decided that I d like to take part of this
tradition before I graduate and leave my more than a decade long alma mater. I also chose to volunteer
because I saw this as a good opportunity to render community service and fulfill my social
responsibility as a student in the Assumption community.
However, I had underestimated how this journey would impact my own identity. I entered this odyssey
without much prior knowledge on what would happen and what exactly we would be doing. The
immersion took place in the small community in Barrio Obrero, Iloilo. Our volunteer group,
consisting of only five high school students and a couple of teacher chaperones, was based in a public
learning center called the Assumption Socio Educational Center (ASEC), which was founded by the
Assumption community many years ago. Our first activity during our immersion was ... Show more

One of our assigned tasks was to repaint the playground. Our first thoughts were that this would be
easy and even fun to do, but we were quickly proven wrong. It was difficult to repaint the playground
under the scorching sun, and the paint fumes were also a factor that made this hard for us. But after we
ve done our part for this task, we were assigned to help out in the school s bookstore, wherein we
covered notebooks in plastic wrap. It seemed to be a menial task, but it was an enjoyable afternoon.
We were able to interact with the bookstore workers there and learn more about the community while
we did the task. The workers, like many of the other members of their community, lived very simple
lives, and yet seemed to be happy and content with what they have and what they

Running With Scissors By Augusten Burroughs
Child development is the biological, psychological and emotional changes that occur in individuals
between birth and the end of adolescence. (Wiki) Child development is inevitably altered when
obstacles such as mental instability and abandonment arise, ultimately affecting children going into
adulthood. Adolescents are very unlikely to reach their full potential without the guidance of an adult
figure, such as a mother, father, sibling, or guardian. Adult figures are essential to a growing child
because they exemplify decision making, wisdom, and overall life lessons on how to grow up.
Although some children do have an adult figure in their life, they aren t always the best influences for
their children, adults also face their own battles which can reflect upon their exterior, ultimately
having a critical effect on a child s development. For example, in Running with Scissors by Augusten
Burroughs, the main character Augusten lives with his mother who suffers from a mental disorder who
guides him into a pathway of chaos and disorder. Augusten learns to cope with no guidance, but still
faces many issues that could have been resolved with a reassuring adult figure. Situations that affect
adults can range from divorce, alcoholism, and depression. Although not as talked about, teenage
parenting also plays a big role in the way a child will develop. In most cases, teenage pregnancies are
unplanned and as a result young teenage girls either decide to keep, abort, or put the baby

Spearmint Log
In this research paper, I am determining which gum will last the longest. It may come to your surprise
that mint flavored gum lasts longer than fruit flavored gum. To do my project, I am taking five
different gum flavors and chewing them to determine which flavor lasts. The types of gum I will be
using are Juicy Fruit, Fruit Stripe, Spearmint, Extra Polar Ice, and Bubblicious. When I chew the gum,
I hypothesize that the Spearmint gum will last longer.
The reason mint gum lasts longer is that mint is a very strong oil with a strong distinct flavor. The
flavor will simply last longer as it s a stronger taste. Although you may have thought that Juicy Fruit
or Fruit Stripe may last longer because it s strong fruit flavor, but the mint actually

Tragic Events In The Book Night By Elie Wiesel
The book night is about the holocaust but more importantly. It s about a boy who goes through it and
the terrible events that happen to him. Tragic events could have devastating effects on any one. Eliezer
has gone through terrible events that changed his perspective on god. When the holocaust started and
Eliezer s family got moved to the ghetto he questioned god but, didn t think much of it. Then when his
mother and sister got separated and killed, he was angry with god. He started questioning god and
everything around him. He just couldn t believe that god could let so many innocent people be
murdered. Being forced to work with minimal food. While watching people die every day. With the

Rape as a War Tactic in the Rwandan Genocide
The sweetly sickening odor of decomposing bodies hung over many parts of Rwanda in July 1994: . . .
at Nyarubuye in eastern Rwanda, where the cadaver of a little girl, otherwise intact, had been flattened
by passing vehicles to the thinness of cardboard in front of the church steps, (Deforges 6). The
normalcy of horrible images like this one had cast a depressing gloom over Rwanda during the
genocide, a time when an extreme divide caused mass killings of Tutsi by the Hutu. Many tactics such
as physical assault or hate propaganda are well known and often used during times of war. Sexual
assault and rape, however, during times of war is an unspoken secret it is well known that rape occurs
within combat zones and occupied territories, but ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After she was seized, she had been raped multiple times not only because of her beauty, but also
because she had been sleeping with Tutsis which therefore meant that she could sleep with the Hutu as
well (Mullins 726). The woman had been raped in front of four Interhamwe soldiers as well as a large
group of refugees. In the chaos after of the rape by Musema, the woman was ordered to turn over from
her stomach to her back and raped by multiple soldiers in turns. Her breast was cut off by one of the
soldiers, which they tried to make her child eat (Mullins 726 727). The violence and chaos allowed for
the pre existing animosities to turn into the crime of rape. The act, though isolated, was obviously
meant directed towards the entire Tutsi population as a whole. Alfred Musema was a man who often
engaged in these opportunistic rapes, which were single episode events (Mullins 726).
During the Rwandan genocide, some rapes occurred recurrently throughout a timespan. Sexual
enslavements occurred when a woman was detained, typically in the house of an Interhamwe, and
subjected to repeated sexual assaults over a period of days, (Mullins 727). These kinds of rapes belong
in their own category because of the added element of confinement and intent to continually rape and
therefore, harm. An Interhamwe soldier named Rafiki, personally sought out one Tutsi woman whom

Static Characters In Romeo And Juliet
In stories, readers often pay close attention to the protagonists and the antagonists of the story who are
often constantly changing due to natural character development. As readers, we often overlook the
stereotypical static character. Every story needs flat or static characters which create conflict involving
dynamic characters making them more important. Although this isn t exactly true in all stories, it isn t
uncommon for a novel to have a protagonist that is static. A static character, in this vocabulary, is one
that does not experience imperative change over the span of the story, remaining basically the same
toward the end as he or she was toward the start. An example of this is Romeo, from Shakespeare s
renown play Romeo and Juliet. If Romeo wasn t in the story, Juliet wouldn t have fallen in love with
Romeo. Juliet also wouldn t have died which would defeat the plot line and whole purpose of the
story. When identifying a character is static or dynamic, you have to look at the identity change
throughout the play. Some of Romeo s well known character traits are his impulsivity, immaturity, and
his sensitivity which the audience see throughout the duration of the novel which adds to the point that
he is a static character. We see some immaturity and sensitivity at the beginning of the play when
Romeo is upset because Rosaline rejected his love. Even when Benvolio and Mercutio try to help him
out of his glum, he refuses to believe that there is anyone more

Definition Of Propaganda By Jacques Ellul
Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East. This statement, a cornerstone of pro Israel activism
and discourse, and the bane of activism for Palestinian rights, in fact reveals the complexity of
propaganda, and of the critical importance of narratives and framing. It perfectly embodies George
Orwell s astute observation that All propaganda is lies, even when one is telling the truth. This paper
argues that Israel is particularly adept at using propaganda because Israel is able to use it not just
domestically, to also cultivate a positive image internationally, particularly in Western democracies,
and especially the US. Furthermore, in targeting Western audiences, Israel is adapt at simultaneously
appealing to different demographic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, Israeli propaganda, at least the most visible, is not directed at Israeli society itself, but
towards the international community . In particular, it is aimed at its geostrategic allies, Western
democracies, especially the US, with whom Israel shares a particularly strong relationship. Yet, while
of course the political leadership of both states are responsible for perpetuating this relationship,
popular support for Israel often stifles discussions about the plight of Palestinians and their struggle
for self determination. As the political turmoil of a faraway state rarely is a priority in influencing the
politics a domestic population, Israeli propaganda is responsible for, and particularly effective in,
framing propaganda in a way that resonates with Western, particularly American, audiences.
Importantly, my use of the term Israeli propaganda refers to organized pro Israel messages in general,
not just propaganda created by the Israeli government or even inside Israel, as Israel is very active at
outsourcing propaganda to Israeli/Jewish diaspora organizations as well as political allies in the West,
in promoting pro Israel

Dietary Guidelines For Americans And The Healthy Eating...
MyPlate from the 2010 dietary guidelines for Americans and the Healthy Eating Plate from the
Harvard School of Public Health have many similarities and some differences. They both have
strengths and weaknesses. The 2010 dietary guidelines for Americans focuses on food variety, amount,
and nutrition. It also emphasizes less saturated fat, sodium and added sugar. It encourages people to
make small changes in their diet and to make healthy food and beverage choices. These are some of
the strengths of this dietary approach. MyPlate is the name given to the illustration for the 2010
dietary guidelines for Americans. This illustration depicts a plate with the four common food groups
(grains, vegetables, fruits, and proteins) on the plate in different representative sizes and a cup to the
side of the plate for dairy. This illustration suggests that whenever someone makes their plate for a
meal their proportion of each food group should be similar to the food proportions on the MyPlate
illustration. This illustration is a strength and a weakness of this dietary approach. The strength of this
illustration is that it creates a visual that could be easy to follow and used as a rough guideline when
trying to eat healthy. The weakness with this illustration is that by itself it does not give any indication
of what a healthy portion size actually is or what size the plate should be. It forces people to look
online for more detailed information which may not be easy or convenient for

Two ancient civilizations with rich history. Ancient Egypt and Ancient Greece. They have also been
the center of my interest for the longest time. Said civilizations have many similarities and differences.
Ancient Egypt and Ancient Greece have many similarities. For example, they re both countries that
are still around today. Both civilizations had vast polytheistic mythologies that they believed
controlled the events and aspects of life, and offerings were to be made to appease them. Both held
hygiene in high regard, surprisingly. Also, the civilizations had breathtaking architecture that was
revolutionary. Ancient Egypt and Greece both created their very own writing system, both of which

Putting Don Carlos Together Again Analysis
The article, Putting Don Carlos Together Again: Treatment of head injury in sixteenth century written
by L.J. Andrew Villalon tells the story behind the treatment of Philip II s son, Don Carlos. The article
begins by explaining the details of the incident that almost caused the prince s death. The author then
goes into a more deeply examination of the treatment itself; he explains the ways in which the
physicians took care of the situation and the reaction of the prince. The author talks about the reaction
not only from the king but also from the community of Alcala. One of the main topics of the article is
how many writers of the time, portrayed the injury of Don Carlos. And how this image persisted so
much that it influenced the way in which the community of Alcala and even in modern times we
observe the life of Don Carlos. After giving the details of the injury, the author explains the interaction
between the physicians, who took care of the man who was supposed to be the king of Spain. He tells
the readers how Philip and his advisors gathered the most respectful and well known doctors of the
time, which among them were Dr. Vesalius and Dr. Daza Chacon. As the author explains, at the
beginning of the injury the relationship between the doctors was healthy, the only issue between them

They also wrote about how the king, Philip, reacted. Writers such as Giuseppe Verdi, who wrote a

as Villalon says because of texts like this the myth of Don Carlos was created. As the author implies,
the life of Don Carlos was more a superstition than an actual life. Villalon also says that the way these
writers portrayed King Philip s reaction gave more emphasis to think that Philip killed his son in

Improving The Health Of The Population
Should improving the health of the population be more important than that of the individual? This is
the controversy that surrounds the idea of public health, and specifically, the life of Henrietta Lacks.
Public health can be explained as the desire to do what is deemed necessary to keep society as a whole
in a healthy state, by eliminating possible causes that may be leading to detrimental outcomes in the
health of our nation. It is the research of cures, immunizations, quarantining, and raising public
awareness in an effort to stop the spread of disease among the community. However, there is a large
amount of gray area when it comes to what is right and wrong in terms of placing the health of the
nation as a whole over the health ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She received radiation treatments at John Hopkins hospital, however at this time, there was a
disadvantage in being an African American, because it was unlikely you were given the same quality
of treatment and care as a Caucasian. When Henrietta s cells were extracted from her cervix, she was
not informed that a part of her body was being used for medical research. However at the time, there
was little regulation regarding the ownership over one s own body parts and tissue, so lawfully
nothing was considered illegal. Although this would play hardly any role in the life of Henrietta, the
toll it took on her family was quite large. The controversy of the HeLa cells revolved around the
principle of ethics in public health. Since Henrietta s cells were taken without permission from neither
her nor her family, it is shown that there is a lack of regulation in the law that controls one s ownership
or lack there of over their tissues. Although at first this seemed to not be an issue, it deeply altered the
lives of her descendants, even though it didn t affect Henrietta directly while she was still alive. The
emotions revolving around the feeling of immortality of Henrietta s cells left some of her ancestors
very uncomfortable with the fact that their mother, sister, wife, and aunt was being shipped around the

Birth Family Structure
The Impact of Birth Order and Family Structure on Success in Education Many researchers have
questioned whether or not birth order and sibling structure play a role in dictating one s success in
education. Research shows that firstborns tend to exceed their siblings in intelligence and achievement
levels (Cheng, Wang, Sung, Su, Li, 2012; Boomsma, Beijsterveld, Beem, Hoekstra, Polderman
Bartels, 2007; Cho, 2010; Bu, 2014; Akgeyik, 2013; Karwath, Relikowski, Schmitt, 2014; Horner,
Andrade, Delva, Grogan Kaylor Castillo, 1998; Rammohan Dancer, 2008) starting at the age of eight.
(Boomsma et al., 2008). This may be due to several factors including the uneven divide of familial
resources (Cheng et all, 2012; Harkonen, 2014; Rees, Lopez, ... Show more content on

Parents may choose to provide more educational opportunities to only one child in a case where they
can t afford to provide for all of their children. However, if the family is particularly large and with big
gaps in age between siblings, the household configuration could change as older children become less
reliant on parental support (Schmeer, 2009). This presents the opportunity for parents to provide their
resources to their younger children. Alternatively, large age gaps could constrict educational resources
by eliminating the opportunity to share clothes, toys, etc. to help parents financially (Karwath, et al,
2014). Nevertheless, research has shown that children benefit and obtain more schooling (Marlani,
2008) from larger age gaps (Karwath, et al, 2014; Bu, 2014) and smaller families (Booth Kee, 2008;

Buying vs Leasing
Executive Summary
What would be the best option for a company to lease or purchase equipment? Each business owner s
situation is different. The decision to buy or lease business equipment is unique. It must be made on a
case by case basis. Leasing equipment preserves capital giving the business more flexibility. While
leasing can be good in the short run it can cost you more in the long run. We will look at the
advantages and disadvantages of leasing. My research will look at the different options a company
faces if they lease or buy and why it has become more attractive to lease.
First let s start by describing the basic concept of a lease. Some leases are merely rentals, whereas
others are effectively purchases. FASB classifieds ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Like house, then, buying is cheaper than renting in the long term.
While leasing has both advantages and disadvantages. Let s take a look at the disadvantages. The lack
of ownership would be a main disadvantage. You are obligated to make payments and when a lessee
encounters financial distress, the lessor typically becomes its largest creditor. If a lessor decides to
reduce exposure and recall its leased aircraft, an airline can no longer operate. Lessors require
payments for all aspects of airplane utilization and rent, meaning maintenance reserves and so on. The
cash flow becomes much tighter while if they own their own jets they have much more flexibility.
According to Boeings Zolotusky, it comes down to two basic considerations, the quality of the aircraft
involved and the customer involved.
Businesses can change operations and it may be expensive and difficult to terminate a lease before the
end of the term. If the business owns the property it might be easier to sell and make money rather
than losing all of its assets and getting nothing in return. In some cases of leasing when it s time to
renew the owners might demand higher rental payments putting the lessee at a disadvantage.
Lessors offer a very sensible business proposition. For airlines that want to be primarily airlines, it s a
very attractive and efficient service. If the operators want to focus on the service of getting people on
planes,

Atomic Theory
Atomic theory is the idea that matter is made up of small particles made of atoms. The atomic theory
first had 5 points which were stated by John Dalton who came up with it. The first one was that all
elements were made up of small units called atoms. The second one was that all atoms of a given
element are identical to each other. Third, all the atoms were different from all the other atoms.
Fourth, atoms of different elements combined together in equal numbers to form compounds. Fifth
and final, atoms cannot be broken down, created or divided. John Dalton was a chemist in the early
19th century and his work was focused on the behavior and properties of gases. He used his work on
gases to come up with his law of proportions which was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

1909 R.A. Millikan Oil drop experiment determined the charge (e=1.602 x 10 19 coulomb) and the

1911 Ernest Rutherford Using alpha particles as atomic bullets, probed the atoms in a piece of thin
(0.00006 cm) gold foil. He established that the nucleus was: very dense, very small and positively
charged. He also assumed that the electrons were located outside the nucleus.

  • 2. Assignment One. “To View Language As Though It Were An Assignment One to view language as though it were an object, devoid of the social context of its creation and use, is to dislocate it from the field of human interaction within which language derives the full quality of its meanings... (Grugeon and Gardner 2000: 105) Language is a mixed bag of contradictions which all of society use to address the specific needs of their group. A teacher s role is extreme in the process of understanding language. It is not enough to merely consider the cultural context in which the speaker emerges, teachers must understand the implications arising from such circumstances, and how they present in the classroom. Socio cultural factors such as religion, sex and social class play a significant ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, to grasp the full meaning of language, Gee conveys the need to view language as a three dimensional object, requiring human interaction and social context as the further dimensions. Without human interaction and social context, language is merely an object void of any meaning. It is hard to find any characteristics of society that plays a role as fundamental as language does (Hudson, 1996, p. 4). Language is therefore seen as more than a tool to communicate. Language is an identity used distinctly by different groups to recognise people with parallel values and beliefs who share similar qualities. Vygotsky explains cognitive development as a socially mediated activity which occurs during social interaction (O Donnell et al. 2016. p. 101). By providing us with this description, Vygotsky is reinforcing the fundamental role our social settings play in contributing to student s overall development. Gee explains an important factor of why he believes some student s do not succeed in the classroom. A Discourse, as illustrated by Gee is a network of people that shares a similar way of using language, of valuing, acting and thinking, these traits make the group easily identifiable (Green, 2006. p.3). While there are many benefits of belonging to a group, Children can be identified as failures if the Discourse is unfamiliar to them. All cultures are diverse in one aspect or another. Many have different beliefs, ideologies and rules which help us identify different ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Importance Of Music On Music Studies have shown that music helps improve memory, increase focus, helps you become more creative, reduces stress, increases your IQ, and stimulates both left and right brain while studying. Music has been proven scientifically to have beneficial effects on mental development. The Dana Foundation studied the impact of listening to music while taking a test and the scores improved when students were listening to music. While music can help you focus it can also impact and regulate your mood and the best mood to take a test in is a relaxed mood. The four music types we are doing our project on are classical, rock, country, and pop. Studies have shown that Baroque music is the best for stimulating learning, research and work. Baroque music is a type of classical music and is known as the best music to listen to when learning and working as said before. The most important is the type of noise and music. We have found that music you enjoy listening to increases focus and music you don t enjoy listening to impedes focus. The first type of music that we researched is classical music. We found that people who listen to classical music have a high self esteem and can focus more when testing at any time. Classical music is known for helping you calm down and relax your nerves while it also helps you focus. We have two attention systems that are the complete opposite of each other. One is called the conscious side and it helps us direct our focus towards things such as tests, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Group Disconnection During the initial stages our classes group process meeting, group member interactions brought to the surface this notion of responsibility. For the purposes of confidentiality, I will refer to the individuals as member X and member Y. Member X was asked by the group leader to elaborate on a feeling by using one word. Although done in a caring way, member X was not able to completely grasp the request without storytelling. For the purposes of achieving more congruency in expression, the group leader used caring confrontation. Subsequently, this skillful application of confrontation, while keeping the focus on the present, allowed member X to go deeper in self expression. In addition, member Xs willingness to trust (1) the leader, (2) the process, and (3) self, also assisted in the outcomes possibility. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As a result, there was an immediate reaction regarding the apparent disconnection. In this instance, the group leader expressed her observation and used facilitation in inviting the group to share their feelings. Despite this, member Y s verbal and non verbal cues remained out of sync. With both member s, the group leader demonstrated caring confrontation, giving feedback, and facilitation. Caring confrontation when expressing the conflict between the verbal and non verbal cues and the blockage of in depth self expression. • 6. Cultural Artifacts In The Wizard Of Oz Cultural Artifacts My first work is the American film, The Wizard of Oz, directed by Viktor Fleming. The film was released in 1939 and is also a musical. The screenplay was written by Noel Langley, Florence Ryerson, and Edgar Allan Woolf. The music was written and composed by Herbert Rosson. The film is based on the book, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, written by L. Frank Baum. It is set at the turn of the 20th century in Kansas and then in the Land of Oz. My second work is the book, The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, written by the English writer, C.S. Lewis and published in 1950. It is the Scholastic edition from 1995. The book is set during World War Two in the English country side and then then magical world of Narnia where time is different and therefore cannot be compared to any time period of the real world. Common Theme The common theme I will be exploring is Good vs. Evil . The theme is expressed in The Wizard of Oz throughout the movie through the use of the antagonist, the Wicked Witch of the West pursuing the main character, Dorothy, for the shoes she wears (Fleming LeRoy, 1939). The Wicked Witch wants the shoes for herself because they hold great power, but also because they belonged to her sister, The Wicked Witch of the East (Fleming LeRoy, 1939). However, Glinda The Good Witch of the North, gifts them to Dorothy after she traveled to Oz, in her house and through a cyclone (Fleming LeRoy, 1939). • 7. Value Chain of H M Essay H amp;M s value chain: The value chain, made by Michael Porter, is really important to see how a company structure is created. The value chain is constituted by two parts: support activities (firm infrastructure, human resource management, technology development, procurement) and primary activities (inbound logistic, operations, outbound logistic, marketing and sales, service). (Johnson et al. 2011, p.97 99) Support activities: * Firm infrastructure: H amp;M is present in 44 markets in the world, holds more than 2,500 stores and employs over 94,000 people. Its head office is located in Stockholm, Sweden where there also are the main departments for finance, buying and design, advertising, accounts, communications, logistics, ... Indeed, even if H amp;M is present in 44 countries, only 8 have access to the online store (Sweden, Germany, UK, Norway, Denmark, Austria, USA and Netherlands). Increasing it, H amp;M could increase its sales a lot. * Procurement: As it is the second Europe s cloth retailer company, for the production H amp;M uses a lot of material and workers so its mains recourses are material, labour and energy. That is why small changes in prices can affect the company s profit a lot, and the fact that it does not own any manufactories causes some problems in controlling the production s prices. However, not owning the factories can be an advantage in some cases. Indeed, if a problem appears, H amp;M can easily change its suppliers. Moreover, due to its huge size, H amp;M can easily manipulate with its suppliers to have the best quality at the lowest production s price. Primary activities: * Inbound logistic: One of the core values of H amp;M is the sustainability, and, thus, sustainability in production. The aim of H amp;M is to offer good quality fashion at the best price and to achieve it, H amp;M tries to avoid the waste. In this purpose, all the waste coming from the manufacturing, the transport and other sources are planned to be reused, recycled and reduced.(H amp;M, 2012) * Operations: H amp;M makes only one operation which is the design, as other ... Chloramines Lab Report Conclusion and evaluation Investigating the effect of pH on the concentration of chloramines and evaluating their effects in pool water was the aim of this experiment and research. With the data collected and processed, I can now discuss the extent of influence of pH in chloramine treatment as well as the success of this experiment. The experiment prove that pH is a very crucial agent in cleaning of a pool. A pound for pound efficiency is almost guaranteed for chlorine administered in any form if proper pH management is considered. Looking at the dissociation of hypochlorous acid under different pH values, it can be proven that the lower the pH the better the efficacy of chlorine. During the process of chemotherapy very potent anti cancer drugs are used to interfere with the cancer cells ability to produce new DNA. There are approximately fifty different forms of chemotherapy that can be intermixed to provide the most efficient treatment of the cancer cells. They can receive chemotherapy medication orally or through an IV. Finding ways to combat the damage from long term cellular damage can be impossible. (Chopra, 2016; Schulmeister, 2014) Studies have shown that females will tend to have a higher rate of adverse reactions with the use of chemotherapy over males. Over fifty one percent of adverse reactions are listed as not preventable, forty two percent as probably avoidable, and only a mere seven percent are listed as preventable. With advancements in chemotherapy growing, so do the adverse reactions. The drugs are becoming more intense, and they offer a higher success rate with a lower risk of re occurrence. The unfortunate side is the greater adverse reactions, such as nausea/vomiting, anemia, alopecia, constipation/ diarrhea, and fatigue. • 10. Today s Competitive Postal Service Running Head: Today s Competitive Postal Service 2 The United States Postal Service began operations in 1971 following the passing of the Postal Reorganization Act of 1970. In the decades that have followed, the Postal Service has tried to remain relevant in a competitive business environment. In order to be successful at this, a revamping of the agency was necessary in order to keep up with advances in technology used by business and individuals, and to address an overall change in the public attitude regarding old fashioned mail services. This transformation of the Postal Service has been successful because of progressive management and effective leadership. Management and leadership are not the same thing, however they are interrelated and complementary. Shafritz, Russell and Borick (2010, pp. 361 362) state, Leadership is the exercise of authority, whether formal or informal in directing and coordinating the work of others. Management involves power (usually formal authority) ...with the power of management comes responsibility and accountability for the use of organizational resources. In order be transformed, the Postal Service needed to implement new management ideas combined with the pioneering concepts of new leadership. Comparison Of The Sabines, Titian s Rape Of Europa Poussin s Rape of the Sabines, Titian s Rape of Europa, or other paintings depict an assailant, commonly a Greek or Roman god or hero, raping a female in a beautiful and heroic love manner. This type of image also viewed as a heroic rape, has always received considerable attention. Initially from Greek mythology, the story of Castor and Pollux is an anecdote of the great twin brethren interested in two beautiful daughters, Phoebe and Hilaeira, as their wives. Disregarding the fact that these girls were betrothed to their cousins Lynceus and Idas, they carried the girls off to Sparta. Abduction, sexual violation, and defilement caused the fatal quarrel between the brothers and the brother s cousins. Visually stunning, Rubens depicts this ... However, there is eroticism in the lighting and brush strokes, which in contrast to the context of the story, the central female figures appear to have some level of sexual energy and tension with the male figures. Ruben renders the soft face maidens in such a manner that they do not energetically resist the male figures. Although these characteristics correspond with the mythological scene that is taking place, this new interpretation also seems to have more psychoanalytical significance as well. • 12. My Passion For Architectural Design I have always had a passion for being practical for as long as I can remember, I often sought pleasure from helping my parents build dreaded flat pack furniture. Over the years this passion for being practical and building things has just developed into a love for structures and especially in the last few I have been able to hone my passion down to architecture. What could be greater than wanting to design these great edifices and seeing your design built for people to integrate into part of the lives. My application to your university derives from my eagerness to study at one of the best universities in the UK and from my desire to create well designed spaces that are both practical and gratifying to the eye. It also hopes to ensure a satisfaction for my passion for practicality, my appreciation of architecture and hopefully in the future it should secure me a place among some of the architectural greats. As a designer, I am constantly studying the world around me and looking at ways in which I can change and mould it to make it more appealing and suitable for the tasks we undertake in our everyday lives. This is reflected in my Extended Project Qualification that I completed earlier this year which looks into the influence of architecture on human behaviour and how this compelling link between the health and satisfaction of the human body that is largely determined by the fundamental design of buildings can often be ignored by many of the architectural designers today. ... People s bodies react in different ways to stress depending on how the view and handle the demand. Stress can be caused by multiple factors such as friends, family, jobs, schools, and worldview. The way we handle the different stresses of life can either greatly improve our quality of life or harm it. There are two forms of coping with stress and the first is problem focused coping. This form of coping is aimed at managing or correcting the distressing situation (Coon, Psychology: modules for active learning). Then there is emotion focused coping where we try to control the emotions caused by the situation. Both forms of coping can be used in unison with each other. Being able to control your emotions could help you manage the stress in your life. However, it is possible for the two methods to cancel each other out. When making a difficult decision, a person may feel an intense form of emotional distress. The NFL Protest Argument During the pre season of the 2016 National Football League season, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick sat for the National Anthem to protest racial injustice within the United States. When asked why he sat, he stated, I ve been very clear from the beginning that I m against the systematic oppression of black Americans (Willingham). The quarterback received some negative reaction to his method of protest and, after three games, met with former NFL player and Army veteran Nate Boyer to discuss his protest. During this meeting, Kaepernick agreed with Boyer and decided kneeling during the anthem was a more respectful form of protest (Willingham). Since that time, many NFL players joined Kaepernick in his protest and continue to kneel during the playing of the anthem. Through this silent, non violent protest, many uncomfortable questions are now at the forefront of American cultural discussion. To date, Kaepernick alone has paid a price for the protest actions as currently he is not playing in the NFL since no team would dare sign such a controversial player. (Wiki) Child development is inevitably altered when obstacles such as mental instability and abandonment arise, ultimately affecting children going into adulthood. Adolescents are very unlikely to reach their full potential without the guidance of an adult figure, such as a mother, father, sibling, or guardian. Adult figures are essential to a growing child because they exemplify decision making, wisdom, and overall life lessons on how to grow up. Although some children do have an adult figure in their life, they aren t always the best influences for their children, adults also face their own battles which can reflect upon their exterior, ultimately having a critical effect on a child s development. • 27. Static Characters In Romeo And Juliet In stories, readers often pay close attention to the protagonists and the antagonists of the story who are often constantly changing due to natural character development. As readers, we often overlook the stereotypical static character. Every story needs flat or static characters which create conflict involving dynamic characters making them more important. Although this isn t exactly true in all stories, it isn t uncommon for a novel to have a protagonist that is static. A static character, in this vocabulary, is one that does not experience imperative change over the span of the story, remaining basically the same toward the end as he or she was toward the start. An example of this is Romeo, from Shakespeare s renown play Romeo and Juliet. If Romeo wasn t in the story, Juliet wouldn t have fallen in love with Romeo. Juliet also wouldn t have died which would defeat the plot line and whole purpose of the story. When identifying a character is static or dynamic, you have to look at the identity change throughout the play. Some of Romeo s well known character traits are his impulsivity, immaturity, and his sensitivity which the audience see throughout the duration of the novel which adds to the point that he is a static character. She received radiation treatments at John Hopkins hospital, however at this time, there was a disadvantage in being an African American, because it was unlikely you were given the same quality of treatment and care as a Caucasian. When Henrietta s cells were extracted from her cervix, she was not informed that a part of her body was being used for medical research. However at the time, there was little regulation regarding the ownership over one s own body parts and tissue, so lawfully nothing was considered illegal. Although this would play hardly any role in the life of Henrietta, the toll it took on her family was quite large. The controversy of the HeLa cells revolved around the principle of ethics in public health. Since Henrietta s cells were taken without permission from neither her nor her family, it is shown that there is a lack of regulation in the law that controls one s ownership or lack there of over their tissues. Although at first this seemed to not be an issue, it deeply altered the lives of her descendants, even though it didn t affect Henrietta directly while she was still alive. The emotions revolving around the feeling of immortality of Henrietta s cells left some of her ancestors very uncomfortable with the fact that their mother, sister, wife, and aunt was being shipped around the ... • 33. Birth Family Structure The Impact of Birth Order and Family Structure on Success in Education Many researchers have questioned whether or not birth order and sibling structure play a role in dictating one s success in education. Research shows that firstborns tend to exceed their siblings in intelligence and achievement levels (Cheng, Wang, Sung, Su, Li, 2012; Boomsma, Beijsterveld, Beem, Hoekstra, Polderman Bartels, 2007; Cho, 2010; Bu, 2014; Akgeyik, 2013; Karwath, Relikowski, Schmitt, 2014; Horner, Andrade, Delva, Grogan Kaylor Castillo, 1998; Rammohan Dancer, 2008) starting at the age of eight. (Boomsma et al., 2008). This may be due to several factors including the uneven divide of familial resources (Cheng et all, 2012; Harkonen, 2014; Rees, Lopez, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Parents may choose to provide more educational opportunities to only one child in a case where they can t afford to provide for all of their children. However, if the family is particularly large and with big gaps in age between siblings, the household configuration could change as older children become less reliant on parental support (Schmeer, 2009). This presents the opportunity for parents to provide their resources to their younger children. Alternatively, large age gaps could constrict educational resources by eliminating the opportunity to share clothes, toys, etc. to help parents financially (Karwath, et al, 2014). Nevertheless, research has shown that children benefit and obtain more schooling (Marlani, 2008) from larger age gaps (Karwath, et al, 2014; Bu, 2014) and smaller families (Booth Kee, 2008; Karwath, et al, ... • 34. Buying vs Leasing Executive Summary What would be the best option for a company to lease or purchase equipment? Each business owner s situation is different. The decision to buy or lease business equipment is unique. It must be made on a case by case basis. Leasing equipment preserves capital giving the business more flexibility. While leasing can be good in the short run it can cost you more in the long run. We will look at the advantages and disadvantages of leasing. My research will look at the different options a company faces if they lease or buy and why it has become more attractive to lease. First let s start by describing the basic concept of a lease. Some leases are merely rentals, whereas others are effectively purchases. FASB classifieds ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Like house, then, buying is cheaper than renting in the long term. While leasing has both advantages and disadvantages. Let s take a look at the disadvantages. The lack of ownership would be a main disadvantage. You are obligated to make payments and when a lessee encounters financial distress, the lessor typically becomes its largest creditor. If a lessor decides to reduce exposure and recall its leased aircraft, an airline can no longer operate. Lessors require payments for all aspects of airplane utilization and rent, meaning maintenance reserves and so on. The cash flow becomes much tighter while if they own their own jets they have much more flexibility. According to Boeings Zolotusky, it comes down to two basic considerations, the quality of the aircraft involved and the customer involved. Businesses can change operations and it may be expensive and difficult to terminate a lease before the end of the term. If the business owns the property it might be easier to sell and make money rather than losing all of its assets and getting nothing in return. In some cases of leasing when it s time to renew the owners might demand higher rental payments putting the lessee at a disadvantage. Lessors offer a very sensible business proposition. For airlines that want to be primarily airlines, it s a very attractive and efficient service. If the operators want to focus on the service of getting people on planes, ... • 35. Atomic Theory Atomic theory is the idea that matter is made up of small particles made of atoms. The atomic theory first had 5 points which were stated by John Dalton who came up with it. The first one was that all elements were made up of small units called atoms. The second one was that all atoms of a given element are identical to each other. Third, all the atoms were different from all the other atoms. Fourth, atoms of different elements combined together in equal numbers to form compounds. Fifth and final, atoms cannot be broken down, created or divided. John Dalton was a chemist in the early 19th century and his work was focused on the behavior and properties of gases. He used his work on gases to come up with his law of proportions which was ... He established that the nucleus was: very dense, very small and positively charged. He also assumed that the electrons were located outside the nucleus. 1914 H.G.J. This programs main focus is youth development, prevention, and education. For prevention the focus is risk and risk factors, for education it focused on skills and knowledge, and last youth development focused on developmental needs. With these three main focuses they all had three common goals such as eliminating or reducing problems, competency in knowledge or skill, and most importantly maturity. Reaching a very diverse group of youth, grades K 12, it is very important for them to develop and mature each year in the program. The mission of the program is through non formal research based, experiential activities, 4 H ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
