- Synchronous communication can be an effective method of ensuring that all students are familiarized with assignments, tutorial topics, questions and feedback can be almost simultaneous. The ability to hold live chat sessions/discussions, Chat rooms and other such forums are an excellent way for students to socialize, to assist each other with study or to learn as part of collaborative teams. The disadvantage is that all the participants involved with the communication must be available at the same time. With busy schedules, and different time zones, real-time communication can be difficult to execute.

It helps to motivate students to participate in collaborative learning. Students feel that someone is there to give responses, so that they willing to work with them on their concerns and to answer their questions. Students can still reach out for help using their computer, and do not have to reach for their phones to connect to instructors to hear their voice. It allows the student to see instructor’s faces as they can speak to students and direct them. Visual learners get benefits from these tools. Students can ask their problems using video and screen capture or web navigation tools. Both instructors and students must be open and willing to reach out in order to find a solution for an issue, and this requires working together in tandem—brainstorming, discussing, even negotiating.
