Subject :
SYNCHRONOUS AND
ASYNCHRONOUS OF E-
LEARNING
The modern day e-learning environment
can be divided into two categories:
• Synchronous
• Asynchronous
Synchronous e-learning
• Synchronous learning refers to a learning event in
which a group of students are engaging in
learning at the same time.
• Synchronous learning involves online studies
through chat and video conferencing. This kind of
learning tool is real-time.
• It is a virtual classroom which allows students to
ask,and teachers to answer questions
instantly,through instant messaging,which is why
it is called Synchronous.
Advantages of Synchronous e-
learning.
• Cost effectiveness : Organizations do not need to
spend money on travel and accommodation
expenses like in classroom training; learners can
attend the training session right from other places
virtually.
• Instant feed back/ gratification : Participates can
raise queries via instant messaging and get answers
instantly. This helps them gain sound knowledge on
the concepts and retain it longer. In addition,by
getting quick answers, people learn from their
mistakes and avoid them.
Advantages of synchronous e-
learning
• Highly convenient : Organizations can train global
employees at one go. Learners can interact with
their peers like a classroom without feeling isolated.
In addition they can attend the learning on any
device ( desktops, tablets, mobiles, etc).
• Highly motivating : A synchronous learning
environment enhances learning by increasing
audience's motivation levels, as real- time
interactions are much more engaging than the
isolated environment of asynchronous learning.
Advantages of synchronous e-
learning
• Fosters a sense of community : Social interaction
and collaboration are the essence of synchronous
learning organizing a series of online group
activities encourages team work and cooperation,
as online discussions allow to develop learning
community in online forums or in social networks
and exchange ideas, questions and concerns about
the learning course material.
Disadvantages
• It is strictly technology based : Lack of technical
knowledge,poor computer skills,and inability to
handle the various technologies involved in
synchronous learning may tremendously frustrate
and discourage online learners,so high dropout
rates might be expected.
• Demands a high speed internet connection :
Synchronous learning requires a good
bandwidth, and this could be an issue when online
training for distributed workforce is involved.
Disadvantages
• Local time barriers : different time zones can
create communication challenges,as a
synchronous learning course requires from both
employees and trainers to be online at the same
time.
• Requires careful planning : the challenging
planning process that synchronous learning
requires coordination of schedules is
absolutely necessary, but sometimes it is not
possible.
Asynchronous E- Learning
• Asynchronous learning is a student- centered teaching
method that uses online learning resources to facilitate
information sharing outside the constraints of time and
place among a network of people.
• Asynchronous learning can be carried out even while the
student is offline.
• Asynchronous learning is based on constructivist theory, "
a student centered- approach that emphasizes the
importance of peer- to- peer interactions".
• This approach combines self- study with asynchronous
interactions to promote learning, and it can be used to
facilitate learning in traditional on- campus education
and,distance education, and continuing education.
Supporting resources of
asynchronous learning are;
• E- mail
• threaded conferencing
systems.
• Wikis
• Electronic mailing lists.
• online discussion
boards.
• blog
Merits of asynchronous e-
learning
• Learn at own pace : Employees can hone their
skills round the clock and at their own pace,
without the fear of failing to catch the pace of
the instructor. Moreover they can jot down
doubts while learning and clarify them later
with the instructor .
• No time constrains : Employees can interact
with peers through e- mails or chats without
any time constrains .This form of learning has
no time and distance constrains.
Limitations of asynchronous e-
learning
• Cannot get instant feedback : Employees who have
doubts in the course material have to wait until the
instructor replies to their e- mails. This stops employees
from taking the course to the next level until doubts are
clarified. This wastes a lot of valuable time.
• Does not motivate : Employees get demotivated to
login and attend the training session due to a lack of
competitveness ,interaction and live training
environment. Importantly, learners keep on delaying the
training , unlike in the synchronous environment , due to
a lack of motivation and interest.
Thank you
