For each criteria, they will rate their experience on 5 metrics (effective, efficient, engaging, error tolerant, easy to learn) using a Likert scale from 1 to 5. Students will create a data collection sheet with their criteria and metric ratings to collect both qualitative and quantitative results from their usability testing. The goal is to evaluate the usability of the selected app and provide a recommendation to the professor.

The type of data collected, like qualitative user feedback or quantitative metrics, should depend on the goal and who will use the results. Common metrics include success rates, error rates, and task completion times. Planning goals and metrics upfront helps focus the testing and ensure it provides useful results.
What is usability testing?
Usability testing involves having representative users perform tasks and observe where they succeed and struggle. It is important to test individually without help. Initial tests with 5 users are typically enough to identify most usability problems as additional users provide overlapping feedback. Running many small tests with 5 users each and redesigning between tests identifies issues efficiently. While a single user provides initial insights, 3-5 users are needed to account for diversity in behavior. Testing should increase if distinct user groups exist.
Evaluation in hci

Tool Number Seven: Grid Analysis
Timing: Tool #7 must be completed and turned in during the initial third of the Leadership Tools Marathon, but no later than Thursday, September 24, 2015.
PROJECT MANAGER ROLE:
In working through Tool #7, the project manager’s primary role is to make sure that his/her team members understand the strengths and weaknesses in using Grid Analysis to make better decisions. The project manager needs to manage the contributions of each individual on the team in the sense that he/she needs to make sure that each team member has at least one decision to make – a unique and complex decision that has several alternative choices to consider before deciding on one specific solution. The project manager should examine the solution alternatives and the factors of the decision for each of his/her team members to make sure that they are viable and appropriately weighted.
Properly using Tool Seven is an opportunity for the project manager to demonstrate his/her leadership influence skills.
BACKGROUND ON GRID ANALYSIS:
Grid analysis involves making decisions by weighting different factors.
Many decisions have several alternatives to choose from for a solution. This tool is especially useful in making a decision where there is not a clear and obvious solution. Using grid analysis allows a leader to make a decision in a rational and measured way that then leads to increased confidence in the decision.
The information on this tool comes from www.mindtools.com. You may want to go the website and download the free Grid Analysis worksheet or you can find one on Canvas. Other Internet and/or library resources may yield variations of the worksheets that may be more adaptable to your needs. Feel free to use any related worksheets, but keep in mind that “trial” worksheets usually carry the trial company’s name and/or logo or that they may have other restrictions that may cause problems with reproduction down the road. Check out any restrictions before your work effort becomes too involved and your work product is basically useless.

What is process evaluation?
Process evaluation uses empirical data to assess the delivery of
programs. In contrast to outcome evaluation, which assess the
impact of the program, process evaluation verifies what the
program is and whether it is being implemented as designed. Thus,
process evaluation asks "what," and outcome evaluation asks, "so
what?"
When conducting a process evaluation, keep in mind these three
questions:
1. What is the program intended to be?
2. What is delivered, in reality?
3. Where are the gaps between program design and delivery?
This workbook will serve as a guide for designing your own process
evaluation for a program of your choosing. There are many steps involved
in the implementation of a process evaluation, and this workbook will
attempt to direct you through some of the main stages. It will be helpful to
think of a delivery service program that you can use as your example as
you complete these activities.
Why is process evaluation important?
1. To determine the extent to which the program is being
implemented according to plan
2. To assess and document the degree of fidelity and variability in
program implementation, expected or unexpected, planned or
unplanned
3. To compare multiple sites with respect to fidelity
4. To provide validity for the relationship between the intervention
and the outcomes
5. To provide information on what components of the intervention
are responsible for outcomes
6. To understand the relationship between program context (i.e.,
setting characteristics) and program processes (i.e., levels of
implementation).
7. To provide managers feedback on the quality of implementation
8. To refine delivery components
9. To provide program accountability to sponsors, the public, clients,
and funders
10. To improve the quality of the program, as the act of evaluating is
an intervention.

- 2. User-Centered (UX) Design UX is a rhetorically based philosophy of design that considers users’ needs and wants and limitations when designing a product. It is a quickly growing career field and a useful skill for anyone who is trying to make sure that the relationship between their company’s product and its users is a positive one.
- 3. Usability Testing (UT) UX researchers/designers conduct usability tests where they observe a small group of sample users completing a planned set of tasks. They record the results of these tasks to both quantify and qualify the overall usability of a product before launching it for the general public to use. The goal of a usability test is to see if a product works.
- 4. Our Objective You will design and conduct a usability test where you are both the researcher and the user. You will write a set of criteria statements and use a set of metrics to collect data on how usable an app designed for workplace communication (of your choosing) is. I am considering adopting one way for us to communicate as a full group in Technical Writing. Therefore, this is an authentic task, and I will consider your recommendation as I redesign this course in future semesters!
- 5. Criteria The first step is to identify criteria that will help you evaluate the app you have chosen. Think of these criteria as tasks – actions a user should reasonably be able to take when using the app for its intended purpose of enhancing communication among co- workers. Draft these criteria as at least ten task statements (not questions). During your usability test, you will complete these tasks and evaluate them according to the metrics in upcoming slides. For each of the ten criteria, there will be five metrics that you will need to track.
- 6. Metrics The following five metrics will be used for each of the criteria statements to evaluate usability: 1. Effective: I was able to complete the task. 2. Efficient: The amount of time I spent on this task was reasonable. 3. Engaging: The product’s style and appearance enhanced my user experience. 4. Error Tolerant: I either did not make a mistake, OR, if I did make a mistake, the product gave me feedback so that I could correct my mistake. 5. Easy to Learn: It was easy to learn how to do this task.
- 7. Likert Scales In 1932, Rensis Likert invented a means of measuring responses to a survey. He showed how asking respondents to place themselves on a scale of favor/disfavor with a neutral midpoint worked better than other means of measuring responses. The Likert scale has since been adopted throughout the world. (It is worth noting that there is much debate about the “neutral” option, and many now favor a six-point scale rather than a five-point scale).
- 8. Data Collection Sheet: Ultimately, for each of your ten criteria, you will include five metric statements evaluated on Likert Scales. You will create a data collection sheet for each criteria (10 sheets total), that will look something like this: Criteria 1: I am able to create chat threads or channels for full groups, small groups, and pairs.
