The Security Strategy of the United States has marked similarities and differences to the Security
Strategy of Europe. This can be effectively traced to the similarities and differences between the two
cultures themselves, particularly in the cultural factors of religion, modernization, ethnicity
/nationalism, and geography. The US and Europe have different responses to the modernization of
warfare from traditional (ships, armies, tanks, aircraft) to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The European document, on the other hand, openly and repeatedly calls for Unification and
Cooperation (European Security Strategy, 2003, 1 8). The United States can draw from European
religious history and ethnic origin, which gives it some cultural similarities. At the same time, the
birth of our nation was so much more recent, and so dramatically different from the beginning of
European history, that it s no wonder there are fundamental differences in culture. Even before the
Declaration of Independence ( God and truth referenced) or the US Constitution were drafted (
freedom of religion ), early America was rooted in Christianity. The first Pilgrims fled religious
persecution in Europe. Christian doctrine has been quoted in speeches given by American leaders
from the beginning (Governor John Walthrop, Massachusetts Governor, 1630), to recent/present
day Presidents (Reagan, GW Bush, Obama), The United States has been referred to as something
different , a shining example all the world to see and

Santorini Research Paper
Santorini is a Greek island in the Aegean Sea. The island is also known as Thera, the English
pronunciation of the island s historical Greek name for the island Thira . Approximately 3500
years ago a series of volcanic eruptions devastated the island, its inhabitants and other
Mediterranean Bronze Age civilizations1. The significance of these eruptions and their aftermath
is that they had a severe environmental impact and may have led to the collapse of Bronze Age
Mediterranean civilizations; moreover it may have been one of the largest volcanic eruptions in
human history. This has led to some labelling the event as catastrophic. Figure 1 is a map of the

The eruption resulted in the formation of a massive underwater caldera4, 5. A caldera is a large
volcanic crater formed by the collapse of a volcano6. These calderas may have led to tsunamis
that overwhelmed settlements and civilizations across the Aegean Sea and Mediterranean 4,5,7.
The deposits of these tsunamis have been studied as evidence of the effects of the eruptions on
nearby civilizations such as the Minoans5. The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines a tsunami as a
great sea wave produced especially by submarine earth movement or volcanic eruption. 6 The issue
with the discussion and debate around the Thera eruption is that there is no known written record
of the event (that we are able to decipher at least). The Minoan people were known to use a non
phonetic language known Linear A1. Figure 2 illustrates an example of Linear A inscriptions9. To
this day there is still no way of translating these inscriptions but there is the possibility they could
hold written record about the events that occurred but until then these symbols still remain a
mystery1. To put the power of this eruption into perspective, the 79 A.D. eruption of Vesuvius that

Conocophill Case Analysis
ConocoPhillips (COP): Lower Commodity Prices Could Lead to the Sixth Quarterly Loss despite
Strong Operational Performance ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP), the largest Exploration Production
company, has been experiencing significant volatility due to unstable crude oil and other
commodity prices. Though the company has taken several key steps to return to profitability,
lower crude oil and gas prices continue to erode its earnings over the last five consecutive
quarters. Recently, the company announced a quarterly loss of $1.1 billion, or ($0.86) per share,
the fifth quarterly loss in a row. There is no problem with the COP s strategy. In fact, the company

John Rawls Moral Knowledge Summary
The Possibility of Moral Knowledge: Rawls s Reflective Equilibrium Reconsidered Are
statements in morality simply expressions of approvals or disapprovals, as suggested by
emotivists, or are they certain kinds of universal prescriptions, as what R.M. Hare has pointed out
(Hare, The Language of Morals, p.163 179)? While nearly all moral theories cannot avoid counter
examples and conflicts between duties, it seems that moral knowledge is not possible. In this essay,
with reference to John Rawlss conception of reflective equilibrium, I argue that moral knowledge is
indeed possible under a coherentist model, without accepting that there are no universal moral
standards as what non cognitivists suggest.

Rawls illustrated that there are some necessary conditions for one to make good judgment on any
topics: a competent judge must not be upset or frightened, and must have the ability, willingness
and access to a correct decision (Rawls, Outline of a Decision Procedure for Ethics , p.177 197). A
competent judge, Rawls argues, could come up with principles which follow everyday moral
judgments or considered judgments that people make (Rawls, A Theory of Justice, p.47). Once the
necessary conditions for a competent judge is fulfilled, and principles behind one s considered
judgments are formulated, Rawls thinks that the moral knowledge of that person would reach
provisionally fixed points . However, given the fact that there are always distortions and
irregularities among people s considered judgments, these judgments should not be given an
absolute priority to the choice of one s moral principles (Rawls, A Theory of Justice , p.48). On the
other hand, as there are also some circumstances that moral principles cannot cater to, for instance,
conflicts between duties. Therefore, one should regularly reflect on his own system of moral
beliefs, sometimes modifying principles to be coherent with his considered judgments, sometimes

Block Booking Essay
It was during World War II that The Golden Age of Hollywood flourished, which not only produced
many patriotic films, but also brought to Hollywood a great number of exiled Europeans from
France, Germany and Austria, which included many actors, writers, directors, and composers.
During this time the film studios grew in power, new stars and directors were discovered and the
eight major studios produced more than 7500 feature films. These films were released by the
studios to audiences eager to be entertained. More than 80 million people attended at least one film
per week. This period enjoyed the greatest collection of talent gathered in one place. (Motion
Pictures, The New Encyclopedia Britannica, Chicago, Encyclopedia Britannica, 2001) ... Show

The studios often used block booking to sell films of mediocre quality.
In wasn t until the late 1937 that the studios began to run in to trouble, partly because on of
economic conditions in the United States and partly because of movies that the public felt were
low in quality and subpar. Many blamed this on the block booking. It was during this time that
one of the smaller studios (Disney Studios) released its 1937 hit Snow White and the Seven
Dwarfs, an animated film with no stars and released by a small studio. This was a wakeup call for
the larger studios that maybe this practice of block booking wasn t such a good idea.
Variety magazine wrote: The wonder is not the scarcity of outstanding, smashing film hits, but that
under the present system of industry operation there are any hits at all. (Hollywood Renegades
(Archive, Hollywood in slump 1938: Variety. 12/14/1938, accessed 6/8/17). By 1947, the United
States Supreme Court Anti Trust law split the Studio System from its distribution component,
which led the way for independent theaters. By 1947 the Sherman Anti Trust Law put an end to the
studio system by dissolving the relationship between the theaters and the

Museum Analysis Essay
On October 26, 2017. I made a visit to the Menil Collection by 1533 Sul Ross street, Houston
Texas. It was amazing to be in such a lovely place. I was accompanied to the museum by my aunt
name Cynthia. who volunteered in taking care of my new born baby during the trip. Everything at
the museum is so great. Especially the people that work there, the way they communicate with the
tourist was so simple and understanding. Even at the end of the visitation, I was given a sticker
which was placed by the right hand side of my chest. During the visit, they are some lots of great

museum visit. Though, I saw other great artwork design in the Menil Collection but I really
adored the way the pieces retorted to my emotional side. I really wish if I would have this
artwork in my home. The first thing that catches my eyes was the way the colors were used.
They were three images shown on the artwork. The one on the right hand side was painted with
yellow and green with a light color of pink and red on the chest side which appears more brighter
and coloful. On the other hand, the one on the left hand side was painted with red and pink and a
little green at the feet side which looks more specifically like Egyptian royal traditional way of
dressing. Furthermore, the middle one was design with more of green, black, and red color on the
head and legs side that gives patterns to the artwork. Meanwhile, the background was like yellow
that seems like fading into dark brown color. It seems that the concertation of the artist focuses
more on the colors that brings out the beauty of the image. However the visual rhythm and

Calculus And Similarities Between Newton And Leibniz
In order to dive into precursors to calculus we need to understand exactly what calculus itself is.
So what is it? According to the Merriam Webster dictionary calculus is defined as a branch of
mathematics that deals mostly with rate of change and with finding lengths, areas, and volumes;
it is divided into two types: integral and differential. The calculus we have come to know and
love has been around for quite some time, dating all the way back to its creation which is credited
to Newton and Leibniz. But what if there was an ancient form of calculus before our modern
calculus? Many ancient civilizations were brilliant and used mathematics in ways that the people
before them never could but is there enough evidence to support the theory that calculus was not
simply the conception of the two rivals Newton and Leibniz? According to Dr. John H. Lienhard
the bare bones of [calculus] had been hatching before either Newton or Leibniz was born. Ancient
Egyptwas one of the civilizations that was hatching the bare bones of calculus. We will discuss the
problems the ancient Egyptians were trying to solve as well as the methods or techniques they used
and why this leads to the conclusion that neither Newton or Leibniz should be solely credited with
the birth of calculus.
Ancient Egypt has long been a focus for many of us here in the modern world. With its magnificent
architecture, culture, and interesting literature it has baffled the minds of many great thinkers. It is

How Romanticism Has Diminish Throughout Popularity
My part starts by talking about how romanticism had diminish in popularity. The book talks about
how drama was in a period of conflict, in which serious romantics wanted Art to target a sensitive
audience making it more limited. In contrast, extremist wanted to created closet drama which
means that they wanted plays to be read instead of been acted. By 1840s romanticismwas no longer
a movement and even though it had effectively ended with neoclassicism it did not changed theatre
completely. Romanticism established the idea of an artist as someone who was exceptional,
sentimental, with great abilities, and inspired. It also established Art as something important just
like a religion. In my opinion, we still share those ideas especially... Show more content on

I think that his ideas were fascinating because he tried to go away from the standard idea of
assigning places according to the person s importance in society but rather made the actors the
main focus for everyone. I think of this as a way to make the audience all the same making the
actors the only celebrities in the room. Also the idea that everyone had the same opportunity to the
same view went away By the nineteenth century melodramas and sentimental comedies were
popular in commercial theater. However, reformers saw these plays as a waste of resources
because they wanted plays to portray stories that could be considered more seriously by the
audience. The need for more seriousness in plays eventually lead to the creation of realism. As
mentioned by Boime, realism was committed to reproducing aspects of the unstable world of
sensory perception (77). The idea of realism was to create plays that portrayed everyday life and
events. As time changed and more problems in society emerge, such as industrialization and
inequality, plays also transformed. For instance, radical realists wanted plays to portray this
events as a way to not only represent current situations but also as a way to promote a change for
these situations. In other words, the main idea of realism was to question and challenge the current
state of society. We have to think that during this period of time science was evolving and society
was more open to acknowledge it. The

What Is The Similarities Between The Scarface And The...
I. Introduction
Scarface is a crime drama film that is famously known for being one of the most violent and
profanes films during its time of release. Focusing on the rise of Tony Montana (Al Pacino) on
the criminal ladder and becoming more psychotic as his career as the leader of his drug empire
progresses, leading to his eventual downfall. Directed by Brian de Palma, written by Oliver Stone
and with performance of the cast with the lead Al Pacino, Scarface became a cult classic among the
masses.
The Godfather is a mob film focuses on the Corleone Family, with its head Vito Corleone(Marlon
Brando) trying to find a suitable heir to his empire, while war is breathing down the neck of other
crime families. Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) then steps in to organize the family back to shape.
Directed by Francis Ford Coppola and based from the novel of the same name written by Mario
Puzo. It received critical acclaim by critics and was cited as an influence by real life mobsters due
to its rather realistic portrayal of gangster life and Cosa Nostra.
Even with the similarities of theme, both movies have a parallel between how it portrays itself, and
it further widens the gap due to its difference of timelines.

violence. The conceptions are wrong; the movie portrays violent scenes as a major turning point for
characters, both tragic and bittersweet. Like the tagline of the movie. Tony loved The American

Why High School Should Start Later Research Paper
Teens need at least 8.5 hours of sleep a night , says Jilly Dos Santos, a teenager who launched a
campaign to start her school later in Columbia, Missouri, you would think anyone especially teens
would want to take advantage of those hours especially on a school night but, with high school
times as early as 7:05, the body itself has complications falling asleep leading students to wake up
late because of sleeping in the next morning which leads to students rushing out the door not having
time to eat breakfast. High schooltimes should start between 8 to 9. Sleeping for a short period of
time for adolescents could lead to health risks and having loved ones affected as well.
It s better for specifically high schools to start later in the morning because the body s circadian
rhythm shifts during adolescence making it difficult for teens to fall asleep early, instead what it
does is makes adolescents sleepy after 10 which causes minimal time to sleep and making it harder

Film Analysis of The Gods Must Be Crazy
Analysis of The Gods Must Be Crazy (Order # A2059556) In 1980 a low budget South African
film was released which over the years has not only spawned a number of sequels, but took a
rather humorous look at the cultural differences between so called primitive cultures and the
modern world. The film was called The Gods Must Be Crazy, was written and directed by South
African filmmaker Jamie Uys, and called by the New York Magazine pure play, an amiable
shaggy dog story in which the awesome wilderness serves as an adaptable prop. (Denby, 47) It
told the story of a Ju/hoansi bushman who journeyed to the end of the Earth to discard a Coke
bottle; and along the way encountered the modern world for the very first time. Modern society
was presented through the eyes of a person who had never encountered it before, and while the
interaction was often portrayed as hilarious, it also provided a interesting view of the modern
world from a most unlikely source. Uys film captures the interaction between members of two
very different societies with very different sets of values. It begins when a coke bottle is thrown
out of the window of a passing airplane and lands in the village of a group of primitive Kalahari
Bushmen. Because they had never had contact with the outside world, they had no knowledge of
what the bottle was, and believed that it was a gift from their gods. However, as they found a
number of uses for this item, the Bushmen began to fight over possession the

Battle Of Resaca Essay
The Civil War was made up of multiple different battles, and was essential to keeping the nation
together. After Lincoln was elected president, the states began to leave the Union (King). In order
to keep the country, the Union needed to fight the states to stop them from leaving over the ideas
of slavery. One of these battles during the Civil War was Resaca. This battle was part of the
Atlanta campaign. A campaign is the way that many battles in the Civil War were categorized. The
result of the Battle of Resaca can be attributed to the leadership of the generals, the geography of the
region, and the conflict that took place. An important Union general in the Battle of Resaca was
commander William T. Sherman, he attended West Point Academy and excelled academically, then
graduated in 1840 ( William Tecumseh Sherman. ). Sherman was well trained and was planning to

The military, in modern times, has many purposes. These forces are given high powered weapons

The Epidemic Of Global Health
Global health is not a topic we often speak of. In fact, it is mostly forgotten or ignored. But as with
any event of international stature, it is important for us to understand and acknowledge. Global
health has many facets, and I encourage each of you to find a topic that inspires you. Whether those
inspirations be small donations or large movements towards change, find something and let it move
you. We overlook the headlines in the news talking about mass genocides or rising HIV epidemics.
Why? Because numbers mean nothing to us. When choosing a topic, nothing is more important
than remembering that those numbers you are reading about are brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers,
people. Humanizing these sufferings leads to a connection and empathy.

Ozymandias and the Grecian Urn Paper
Even though Ozymandias by Percy Shelley and Ode to a Grecian Urn by John Keats sound like
very different types of poems, they still share some of the same characteristics. In Ozymandias,
Shelley tells a story of how a man found a ancient statue of a king, with the words My name is
Ozymandias, King of Kings,/ Look on my Works, ye Might, and despair! The statue was broken
into pieces, and the land was bare, with nothing to look on (11). In Ode to a Grecian Urn, Keats is
speaking to an ancient urn and describing the unchanging pictures that are on it. These poems are
very different in how their objects interact with the passing of time and in the feelings that they
invoke in the reader, but very similar in the romantic... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The poem gives the reader a feeling of loneliness and emptiness by using lines like The lone and
level sands and boundless and bare (14, 13). In Ode to a Grecian Urn , the connotations of the
words that Keats uses are completely opposite. Keats even describes the urn as being able to tell
A flowery tale more sweetly than [their] rhyme (4). Keats then goes on to state that the melodies
unheard/ Are sweeter; therefore, ye soft pipes, play on (11 12). These lines are so light and
pretty especially compared to the harshness of Shelley s poem. Keats describes the beautiful
pictures on the urn throughout the rest of the poem, even making a sacrifice sound peaceful.
Even though the way the poems objects interact with the passing of time and the feelings the
poems invoke in the reader differ greatly, the romantic characteristics that both poems symbolize
are very similar. Ironically, the opposite parallels of the two poems have a way of representing a
romantic mindset. For example, the romantics believed that nature is supposed to teach. In
Ozymandias , nature destroys a statue and a town that had arisen from greed and the abuse of
power. The king is stated to have a sneer of cold command and a heart that fed his own desires
(4,8). The trunkless legs of stone and a shattered visage makes it sound like nature was not very
happy with the king s show of authority (2, 4). In Ode

Gay Marriage Research Paper
In today s society, there are many stereotypical people that are against gay or lesbian marriage.
Everyone should have the right to decide on who they would like to marry. Gay marriage should
be legal and a non punishable offense because it can prevent teenage suicides, more children will
be adopted, and people will not feel like second class citizens.
If humanity were to accept gay marriage, it would lower and prevent some teen suicides. Most
teens are deciding and revealing what path they are going to take in middle and high school. The
number of suicide attempts among high school students decreased in states where same sex marriage
was legal. The findings covered thirty two states that legalized same sex marriage from 1999 to
2015 (Willingham). All kids have a difficult time coming out to the world, and it causes them not
to feel heard or accepted. When states make it legal more people that do not support it change their
views when they see it is not different from a ordinary couple.
Many teens also feel less accepted by the world when it comes to other kids in their school. Students
that do not support others orientation creates a discomforting environment. Unsafe school
environments prevent LGBT students from reaching their full academic potential (Slater). The
children have to feel heard or they will fall into a depression and will shut out everyone that cares
about them. Therefore, safe spaces for LGBT students ( LGBT Youth ) Which will allow kids to

Analysis Of Riverbank Filteration In India
Sandhu et al.,(2011)worked on potential of riverbank filteration in India and found that the

Comparing the Great Gatsby and Winter Dreams
Fitzgerald Essay
And one fine morning... With this phrase, appearing on the last page of F. Scott Fitzgerald s
masterpiece The Great Gatsby, narrator Nick Carraway effectively sums up the motivating force
that drives the novel s titular character, Jay Gatsby. It is the achievement of the American Dream
that hangs unreached at the end of Carraway s sentence. In this way, the story leaves us with a
similar lasting taste of longing, the bittersweet realization that powerful as the Dream may be, it is
just that: a dream. And yet, while the Dream, like the sentence is never fully realized, this
unrealization is itself a source of motivation for continuance. There is still the promise of that one

Side Effects Of American Imperialism
Imperialism is described in the American history as a the quest for colonial empires . This was
something new for the newly developed country, the request for more natural resources was at
its peak, with countries like Britain, Germany who have practised imperialism and has
succeeded in expanding its power and influence the United State was more than eager to get into
this river that seems to cough out silver and gold. At first, most American viewed this as a
positive expansion because it will help spread American way of life such as democracy.
However this idea was not fully explored by the Americans, they headed into a battlefield with
weapons and crafty strategy but without knowledge of what the war is about and a possible side
effect on not just the U.S. Do Americans in today s worldview imperialism as a positive idea or
negative?. Imperialism is viewed by many an immoral act even if its initial reason was thoughtful,
suppression of the American way of life and the after effect is a stain on the nation that way never

American must begin to look outward. the growing production of the country demands it.... U.S

The University Where I Earn My Bachelor s, Through The...
I will be looking at the University where I earned my Bachelor s, through the Quinn Model.
I earned my BA at Marylhurst University which when I started its big selling point to their students
was a focus on non traditional students, small class sizes and advisor that work with small groups
of students.
From the student perspective it was very much Human Resources view and Internal process view.
On the more administrative side the president of the university was typically a person educated in
business while there was a diverse administration to keep the university in balance (Cawsey,
Deszca, Ingols 2016).
In my second year a president came along that was educated in education, they overhauled the
administration and the business side of the university suffered. The school lost that equilibrium.
Money was lost, departments were merged, some advisors were put in charge of larger groups of
students and class sizes were doubled. Both students and staff were not happy with the direction
things were heading in fact that s how people became aware of it. Tenured professors flat out told
us that things were changing and the school had to change its core model because for Because the
president had bungled things. The president was stepping down but it was going to take a while to
get things back to normal.
Insights:
1.There might be a tendency to focus on one area. In the case of Marylhurst the president and the
new administration were very focused on the students and education,

Identify The Four Major Landforms Of Europe

four major landforms of Europe include the Western Uplands, North European Plain, Central
Uplands and Alpine Mountains. These landforms are primarily arranged in bands that run from
east to west. Each landform provides a biodiversity and resources for humans. The Western
Uplands are formed of ancient rock that has been shaped by glaciation and shapes the north and
west coastline of Europe. It includes Spain, French Brittany, Scandinavia, and the British Isles. The
North European Plain is low and fertile and has rivers. It goes from southern Britain through the
middle of Europe to Russia. The Central Uplands are mostly wooded hills and highlands in France,
Belgium, southern Germany, and the Czech Republic. The Alpine Mountains have high mountain
peaks and active volcanoes that run from northern Spain across southern Europe to the Caucasus in
Russia. The High Alps range from eastern France to Slovenia and are central to the Alpine region.
Mountains act as a natural dividing range and can also isolate people and separate cultural groups.
The Central Uplands is the area bordering the main Alps to the north, which includes a significant
portion of southern Germany extending eastward. These foothills provide excellent farmland, and
there are major agricultural operations here. Western Highlands offer an area for grazing livestock

Fabtek has appointed a former marketing expert, Lightfoot, to lead operations. Lightfoot has
indicated the need for a greater mark up on labor due to uncertainty. However, customers are
unlikely to pay for uncertainty. This approach will only inflate a quote and hamper the ability to
make a sale based on value provided to the customer.
Reducing manufacturing overhead improving labor estimates on quotes is important because
currently the marketing department does not trust cost estimates from the operations department.
Marketing typically adjusts quotes to reflect market and corporate goals. This is a poor approach
to address the bidding process and is likely a contributing factor the low success rate of quotes.
Manufacturing Costs are unreliable and the Bidding Process has a low success rate. Fabtek needs to

The Conflicts Of Deadly Conflict In Shakespeare s Macbeth
Judd Murphy
Brenda Polk
EN 101
16 October 2017
Deadly Conflicts Poets have always written in their own unique ways that are different from
others. All poets have their own style of writing that sets them apart and allows them to appeal to
different audiences. William Shakespeare was especially well known and still is because of this
amazing ability to write such good plays. Shakespeare s play The Tragedy of Macbeth displays
several characters who struggle with indecision and internal conflict. The characters who face these
struggles are also faced with making tough decisions that have a lasting affect on how the play is
developed. The indecision and internal conflict in this play causes Macbeth and Lady Macbeth
commit irrational actions and enter an intense state of paranoia. This emotional and physical state
that the two characters struggle with is what eventually leads to their downfall. Macbeth s main
struggle is his indecision on weather or not he should kill the king. Macbeth s main reason for
wanting to kill Duncan was because he wanted to become king himself. In Laila Abdalla s article
about the roles of power in Macbeth she says, Macbeth, I contend, illustrates that the kings
competing notions of power are a formula for calamity. Macbeth has several things to consider
when thinking about killing Duncan such as thoughts of it coming back to haunt him, Macbeth is
his host, and since he is noble many people would miss him. These three thoughts replay over and
over in Macbeth s head causing him to become a little crazy and have irrational thoughts. The
Tragedy of Macbeth has three major internal conflicts that consist of Lady Macbeth pressuring
Macbeth into murdering Duncan, Macbeth s feeling guilt after he murders Duncan, and Macbeth
losing his sanity after Banquo is murdered. Lady Macbeth encourages Macbeth to harm Dunkan in
the play, yet Macbeth procrastinates because he doesn t believe it s the best idea at the time. As
time goes on and Macbeth decides this is what he shall do, he kills Dunkan where he can become
king. Seth Clark s article about Macbeth says, Macbeth s actions become unjustifiable after the
murder of Duncan, the struggle of Macbeth before and immediately after he

Pros And Consequences Of Privatization
What drives the movement for privatization? In the past few decades, countries around the world
have taken action to privatize their services. It is believed that privatization creates markets that
allow companies to compete, and contribute to the economy. The idea is to cede ownership of
public services to the private sector; where competition will drive innovation, and reduce costs for
the government and the taxpayer alike. That being said, in some cases privatizationdoes not create a
real market where competition occurs, or is even feasible. Privatizing these services can
deteriorate quality and increase costs for those who require their use. This way, it is possible to
limit a service to those who can afford them. While privatization can,... Show more content on

As shown in Prisons, Privatization, Patronage by Paul Krugman, privatization can have negative
consequences. These privatized prisons are understaffed and poorly run. There are have been
convicts escaping prison and minor offenders suffering in the hands of other prisoners (Krugman).
These prisons also show very little reduction in costs, as opposed to state funded prisons and the
little savings come from understaffing and underpaying their employees (Krugman). In this case,
privatization was used for the benefit of private companies who are making a profit, as well as the
government who does not have to invest money in prisons. However, this is done at the expense of
those receiving the service.
Moreover, privatization can limit a service to a certain group of people. As argued by Gary
Haugen in The Privatization of Justice , private services can be limited to the wealthy. In many
developing countries police enforcement is sometimes limited. In some areas, people looking to
protect themselves and their property hire their own protection (Haugen). This is great for
companies who now have access to this new market, allowing them to make money and create jobs.
However, many people cannot afford private protection, making justice available only for the

Signs of Nihilism in Tyler from Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk
In the society, man individuals are troubled by the social rules. Indeed, some of them develop
measures to escape the rules, which govern personal conduct. Nihilism acknowledges that all
human values are baseless, and it is impossible to know anything with certainty (Wilshire 4). It is a
belief that people adopt to reach total anarchism. Wilshire (5) contends that people with anarchistic
values are troubled, and they may require psychological assistance. In Chuck Palahniuks novel
Fight club, Tyler embodies these qualities. This paper will shows that Tyler is a nihilist, since he
does not believe in any human values, and he is not loyal to anyone.
Tyler is a nihilist because he does not believe in the value of friendship or loyalty. Tyler s main
drive is to destroy the narrator s life. Tyler has not emotional connection to people, and he also has
no regrets. He, eventually, forces this philosophy onto the narrator and thereby transforms him into
Tyler Durden. In the first chapters of the novel, it is difficult to distinguish the narrator and Tyler
because of the effect that Tyler had on the narrator s personality. Tyler emphasizes this point when
he says, I used to be a nice person (Palahniuk 98). Eventually, Tyler destroys the narrator s humanity
and pulls him from the senses that control societal actions.
Tyler is a nihilist because he has no regard for community rules or respect for other people. When

This not only solves the legality situation that the company faces, but it also gives the workers
their days back. Those factory workers are people too. This solution falls under the Kantian
school of ethics. This school of ethics was established by Immanuel Kant and is all about the
individual. Kant argues that people should be treated like the actual human beings that they are
and not just some piece of property that is to be used to achieve the end goal of a company. The
current way this company is treating their factory workers is like they are just pieces of property.
If Sarah is to stop the illegal overtime, she is showing that the employees matter and that she cares
for those workers. These workers most likely have families, and by making them work this

Three Witches In Macbeth
In the play of Macbeth, by William Shakespeare, Macbeth is confronted by Three Witches and his
wife, Lady Macbeth. It was said that the Three Witches could speak of the future and his wife knew
of this and thought of it as truth so, she influenced her husband to make them true. With the help of
the Three Witches and Lady Macbeth, Macbeth seeks out to make these prophecies come true and
some not. Because of the prophecies he commits murder (with the help of his wife) on several
occasions to fulfill or to prevent them. Through Macbeth, Shakespeare conveys the power of
suggestion using a supernatural entail, the influence of significant others, and how suggestion can
lead to action.

The Three Witches then summon three apparitions, which state, ...Macbeth! Beware/ Macduff;
/ Beware the Thane of Fife/...laugh/ to scorn/ The pow r of man,/ for none of women born/ Shall
harm Macbeth/... Macbeth shall never vanquished be until/ Great Birnam Wood to High
Dunsinane Hill/ Shall come against him. (4.1.121 123). The interpretation of the apparitions is
Macduff will stand in his way, no one who is born that of a women shall kill Macbeth, and that
he will never die until he fights against Great Birnam Wood to his castle hill. This gives a sense
of overconfidence to Macbeth, if never have known this info who knows what would have
happened and what he would have done. He fights a war against the the English Army who are
in command of Macduff and Malcolm. They tell their men to dress themselves up in camouflage
so they use the Birnam Wood branches to march up to his castle and so the third prophecy is
fulfilled. Macbeth knows about this and accepts this prophecy so, he leaves his castle to fight in
the battlefield. Young Siward and Macbeth have a fight because Macbeth still thinks that he can t
be killed of a man born from a women, who then kills him fueling his overconfidence even more.
Macduff finds Young Siward dead and hunts for Macbeth, who tells Macduff that no one that is
born of a woman can harm Macbeth; Macduff was not naturally born from a woman he was
ripped out of his mother s womb . Finding out this info Macduff knows he can kill Macbeth and
Macbeth knows that he is going to die. He accepts death rather than suffer humiliation so Macduff
kills Macbeth confirming the first and second

McDonald Regional/Cultural Studies Lesson 03 24 Mar 2013 Instructor: Col (ret) Frank Belote Air Command and Staff College Distance Learning Maxwell AFB, AL The Security Strategy of the United States has marked similarities and differences to the Security Strategy of Europe. This can be effectively traced to the similarities and differences between the two cultures themselves, particularly in the cultural factors of religion, modernization, ethnicity /nationalism, and geography. The European document, on the other hand, openly and repeatedly calls for Unification and Cooperation (European Security Strategy, 2003, 1 8). The United States can draw from European religious history and ethnic origin, which gives it some cultural similarities. At the same time, the birth of our nation was so much more recent, and so dramatically different from the beginning of European history, that it s no wonder there are fundamental differences in culture. Even before the Declaration of Independence ( God and truth referenced) or the US Constitution were drafted ( freedom of religion ), early America was rooted in Christianity. The first Pilgrims fled religious persecution in Europe. Christian doctrine has been quoted in speeches given by American leaders from the beginning (Governor John Walthrop, Massachusetts Governor, 1630), to recent/present day Presidents (Reagan, GW Bush, Obama), The United States has been referred to as something different , a shining example all the world to see and ... • 5. Santorini Research Paper Santorini is a Greek island in the Aegean Sea. The island is also known as Thera, the English pronunciation of the island s historical Greek name for the island Thira . Approximately 3500 years ago a series of volcanic eruptions devastated the island, its inhabitants and other Mediterranean Bronze Age civilizations1. The significance of these eruptions and their aftermath is that they had a severe environmental impact and may have led to the collapse of Bronze Age Mediterranean civilizations; moreover it may have been one of the largest volcanic eruptions in human history. This has led to some labelling the event as catastrophic. Figure 1 is a map of the Greecein the Aegean Sea. Santoriniis located within a group of islands known as the Cyclades3. Due south of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The eruption resulted in the formation of a massive underwater caldera4, 5. A caldera is a large volcanic crater formed by the collapse of a volcano6. These calderas may have led to tsunamis that overwhelmed settlements and civilizations across the Aegean Sea and Mediterranean 4,5,7. The deposits of these tsunamis have been studied as evidence of the effects of the eruptions on nearby civilizations such as the Minoans5. The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines a tsunami as a great sea wave produced especially by submarine earth movement or volcanic eruption. 6 The issue with the discussion and debate around the Thera eruption is that there is no known written record of the event (that we are able to decipher at least). The Minoan people were known to use a non phonetic language known Linear A1. Figure 2 illustrates an example of Linear A inscriptions9. To this day there is still no way of translating these inscriptions but there is the possibility they could hold written record about the events that occurred but until then these symbols still remain a mystery1. To put the power of this eruption into perspective, the 79 A.D. eruption of Vesuvius that destroyed the Roman ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Conocophill Case Analysis ConocoPhillips (COP): Lower Commodity Prices Could Lead to the Sixth Quarterly Loss despite Strong Operational Performance ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP), the largest Exploration Production company, has been experiencing significant volatility due to unstable crude oil and other commodity prices. Though the company has taken several key steps to return to profitability, lower crude oil and gas prices continue to erode its earnings over the last five consecutive quarters. Recently, the company announced a quarterly loss of $1.1 billion, or ($0.86) per share, the fifth quarterly loss in a row. There is no problem with the COP s strategy. John Rawls Moral Knowledge Summary The Possibility of Moral Knowledge: Rawls s Reflective Equilibrium Reconsidered Are statements in morality simply expressions of approvals or disapprovals, as suggested by emotivists, or are they certain kinds of universal prescriptions, as what R.M. While nearly all moral theories cannot avoid counter examples and conflicts between duties, it seems that moral knowledge is not possible. A competent judge, Rawls argues, could come up with principles which follow everyday moral judgments or considered judgments that people make (Rawls, A Theory of Justice, p.47). Once the necessary conditions for a competent judge is fulfilled, and principles behind one s considered judgments are formulated, Rawls thinks that the moral knowledge of that person would reach provisionally fixed points . Many blamed this on the block booking. • 11. Calculus And Similarities Between Newton And Leibniz In order to dive into precursors to calculus we need to understand exactly what calculus itself is. So what is it? According to the Merriam Webster dictionary calculus is defined as a branch of mathematics that deals mostly with rate of change and with finding lengths, areas, and volumes; it is divided into two types: integral and differential. The calculus we have come to know and love has been around for quite some time, dating all the way back to its creation which is credited to Newton and Leibniz. But what if there was an ancient form of calculus before our modern calculus? Many ancient civilizations were brilliant and used mathematics in ways that the people before them never could but is there enough evidence to support the theory that calculus was not simply the conception of the two rivals Newton and Leibniz? Also the idea that everyone had the same opportunity to the same view went away By the nineteenth century melodramas and sentimental comedies were popular in commercial theater. However, reformers saw these plays as a waste of resources because they wanted plays to portray stories that could be considered more seriously by the audience. The need for more seriousness in plays eventually lead to the creation of realism. As mentioned by Boime, realism was committed to reproducing aspects of the unstable world of sensory perception (77). The idea of realism was to create plays that portrayed everyday life and events. The film was called The Gods Must Be Crazy, was written and directed by South African filmmaker Jamie Uys, and called by the New York Magazine pure play, an amiable shaggy dog story in which the awesome wilderness serves as an adaptable prop. (Denby, 47) It told the story of a Ju/hoansi bushman who journeyed to the end of the Earth to discard a Coke bottle; and along the way encountered the modern world for the very first time. Modern society was presented through the eyes of a person who had never encountered it before, and while the interaction was often portrayed as hilarious, it also provided a interesting view of the modern world from a most unlikely source. Uys film captures the interaction between members of two very different societies with very different sets of values. It begins when a coke bottle is thrown out of the window of a passing airplane and lands in the village of a group of primitive Kalahari Bushmen. Keats then goes on to state that the melodies unheard/ Are sweeter; therefore, ye soft pipes, play on (11 12). • 27. Comparing the Great Gatsby and Winter Dreams Fitzgerald Essay And one fine morning... With this phrase, appearing on the last page of F. Scott Fitzgerald s masterpiece The Great Gatsby, narrator Nick Carraway effectively sums up the motivating force that drives the novel s titular character, Jay Gatsby. It is the achievement of the American Dream that hangs unreached at the end of Carraway s sentence. In this way, the story leaves us with a similar lasting taste of longing, the bittersweet realization that powerful as the Dream may be, it is just that: a dream. And yet, while the Dream, like the sentence is never fully realized, this unrealization is itself a source of motivation for continuance. There is still the promise of that one fine morning making it impossible to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This plan ended up working for Gatsby, because he met Daisy, whom he then did not see for a while, and bought a large house. Jay Gatsby threw extravagant parties each Saturday to prove that he had social status, and money. One thing about Gatsby is that nobody knows about his past. People make up rumours about him, but no one really knows his story. Gatsby is too ashamed of his background to tell anyone the real story. Because nobody knows Gatsby very well, this makes him very mysterious. For Nick, Gatsby is very mysterious because he is his next door neighbour, yet he has never met him. When Nick first sees Gatsby, he does not know what to think. This passage describes Nick s first look at Gatsby He stretched out his arms toward the dark water in a curious way, and, far as I was from him, I could have sworn he was trembling. Involuntarily I glanced seaward and distinguished nothing except a single green light, minute and far away, that might have been the end of a dock. When I looked once more for Gatsby he had vanished, and I was alone again in the unquiet darkness (25). The reader later finds out that Gatsby was looking at the green light on Daisy s dock. Dexter Green is quite similar to Gatsby in many ways. Dexter was also born into a family in which he wanted to leave, and change his identity. I earned my BA at Marylhurst University which when I started its big selling point to their students was a focus on non traditional students, small class sizes and advisor that work with small groups of students. From the student perspective it was very much Human Resources view and Internal process view. On the more administrative side the president of the university was typically a person educated in business while there was a diverse administration to keep the university in balance (Cawsey, Deszca, Ingols 2016). In my second year a president came along that was educated in education, they overhauled the administration and the business side of the university suffered. The school lost that equilibrium. Money was lost, departments were merged, some advisors were put in charge of larger groups of students and class sizes were doubled. Both students and staff were not happy with the direction things were heading in fact that s how people became aware of it. • 34. The Conflicts Of Deadly Conflict In Shakespeare s Macbeth Judd Murphy Brenda Polk EN 101 16 October 2017 Deadly Conflicts Poets have always written in their own unique ways that are different from others. All poets have their own style of writing that sets them apart and allows them to appeal to different audiences. William Shakespeare was especially well known and still is because of this amazing ability to write such good plays. Shakespeare s play The Tragedy of Macbeth displays several characters who struggle with indecision and internal conflict. The characters who face these struggles are also faced with making tough decisions that have a lasting affect on how the play is developed. The indecision and internal conflict in this play causes Macbeth and Lady Macbeth commit irrational actions and enter an intense state of paranoia. This emotional and physical state that the two characters struggle with is what eventually leads to their downfall. Macbeth s main struggle is his indecision on weather or not he should kill the king. Macbeth s main reason for wanting to kill Duncan was because he wanted to become king himself. In Laila Abdalla s article about the roles of power in Macbeth she says, Macbeth, I contend, illustrates that the kings competing notions of power are a formula for calamity. Macbeth has several things to consider when thinking about killing Duncan such as thoughts of it coming back to haunt him, Macbeth is his host, and since he is noble many people would miss him. These three thoughts replay over and over in Macbeth s head causing him to become a little crazy and have irrational thoughts. The Tragedy of Macbeth has three major internal conflicts that consist of Lady Macbeth pressuring Macbeth into murdering Duncan, Macbeth s feeling guilt after he murders Duncan, and Macbeth losing his sanity after Banquo is murdered. Lady Macbeth encourages Macbeth to harm Dunkan in the play, yet Macbeth procrastinates because he doesn t believe it s the best idea at the time. As time goes on and Macbeth decides this is what he shall do, he kills Dunkan where he can become king. Seth Clark s article about Macbeth says, Macbeth s actions become unjustifiable after the murder of Duncan, the struggle of Macbeth before and immediately after he ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 37. Pros And Consequences Of Privatization What drives the movement for privatization? In the past few decades, countries around the world have taken action to privatize their services. It is believed that privatization creates markets that allow companies to compete, and contribute to the economy. The idea is to cede ownership of public services to the private sector; where competition will drive innovation, and reduce costs for the government and the taxpayer alike. That being said, in some cases privatizationdoes not create a real market where competition occurs, or is even feasible. Privatizing these services can deteriorate quality and increase costs for those who require their use. This way, it is possible to limit a service to those who can afford them. While privatization can,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As shown in Prisons, Privatization, Patronage by Paul Krugman, privatization can have negative consequences. These privatized prisons are understaffed and poorly run. There are have been convicts escaping prison and minor offenders suffering in the hands of other prisoners (Krugman). These prisons also show very little reduction in costs, as opposed to state funded prisons and the little savings come from understaffing and underpaying their employees (Krugman). In this case, privatization was used for the benefit of private companies who are making a profit, as well as the government who does not have to invest money in prisons. However, this is done at the expense of those receiving the service. Moreover, privatization can limit a service to a certain group of people. As argued by Gary Haugen in The Privatization of Justice , private services can be limited to the wealthy. In many developing countries police enforcement is sometimes limited. In some areas, people looking to protect themselves and their property hire their own protection (Haugen). This is great for companies who now have access to this new market, allowing them to make money and create jobs.
