3. Types of energy
Energy is the ability some objects have to change
things around them. Energy produces a change or a
transformation. For example, when we leave an object
in the sun, after a while we notice that its temperature
changes; that transformation is the result of the sun
energy.
12. • Nuclear energy. It is the energy given by
chemical elements such as uranium and
plutonium.
13. Energy transforms
One type of energy can transform into a different type
of energy. For instance, when we turn a toaster on, the
electrical energy transforms into thermal energy; or our
bodies transform chemical energy from food into mechanical
energy to move.
Some of these changes of energy are very simple. For
example it is very easy to transform kinetic into sound energy
when we clap our hands, but it is more difficult to transform
sound energy into movement.
14. Electricity
Electricity comes from other types of
energy existing in the nature, such as the
kinetic energy of moving water and wind, or
the chemical energy of coal.
15. Electricity is very useful.
• We can transport it easily through wires in power
lines.
• It transforms in other types of energy, for
example, into light energy through a light bulb, or
in thermal energy trough a heater.
17. ACTIVITIES
• Name things that use electricity
• Choose the correct words:
There are different types of energy. Mechanical energy is
related to static/moving objects. Light/Sound energy comes
from the sun. Musical instruments emit chemical/sound
energy. Fire gives thermal/ electrical energy. Food and
fuel/wind generate chemical energy. Chemical elements
like uranium or water/plutonium generate nuclear energy.
• Match the words to the pictures.
Electrical energy sound energy chemical energy
