Deliberate and focused instructional design requires an important shift in our thinking; first, about the specific learnings sought, and the evidence of such learnings, before thinking about what we, as the teacher, will do or provide in teaching and learning activities. Understanding by Design (UbD) or "backward design" is the practice of looking at expected outcomes before designing curriculum units, performance assessments, and classroom instruction as opposed to the traditional methodology of teach, test, and move one. This session is designed to understand UbD.
Questioning is the most powerful tool in a teaching repertoire. Being able to ask higher-level questions is a good way to differentiate in your class and challenge students. Using Bloom’s teachers can ask or write higher-level questions that will open up all sorts of avenues for rich dialogue, deep responses, and challenge your gifted students. The Seven Rʼs of a Quality Curriculum

To teach for understanding, teachers must be able to identify the big
ideas of their subject and know what it is they truly want students to
understand. They also must engage students in understanding
performances, that is, opportunities for actively building personal
understanding, and provide meaningful feedback on learning as it
unfolds. It is at this intersection of big ideas, understanding goals,
performances, and assessment feedback that curriculum lives, in what I
call the enacted curriculum.
Over the past fifteen years I have worked with teachers exploring the
enacted curriculum of understanding. During that time I’ve had the
opportunity to reflect on the qualities that make an activity, a unit, a
curriculum something that effectively engages students in developing a
deeper understanding. Seven common criteria emerge: rigorous,
rewarding, real, requires independence, rich in thinking, revealing, and
reflective. I present these here as guidelines for the planning, enacting,
and evaluating of a curriculum focused on understanding.

Rigorous
What does it mean for a curriculum itself to be rigorous? For a task or a
lesson? Rather than think of difficulty, I think in terms of affordances. A
rigorous curriculum embodies and affords students opportunities to
develop a deeper understanding and not just show what they already
know. Too often curricula state carefully defined objectives that put an
unintentional cap on students’ understanding and obscure the big ideas of
the discipline, leading to superficial coverage. A rigorous curriculum
must point the direction for learning but be open enough to extend
students’ understanding beyond a minimal outcome.
When I look at an activity a class is to do, I ask myself, “How can
students further their learning of big disciplinary ideas through this task?
How does this task launch the learning but avoid truncating it?” I also
ask myself if students can do a particular task without understanding, by
merely walking through the steps or repeating back information. If so,
that performance doesn’t offer the rigor of understanding.
Real
Disciplinary learning can be thought of as a process by which individuals
gradually increase their participation in communities of practice. As
such, a curriculum that builds understanding must look to engage
students in authentic disciplinary activities so that students’ classroom
activities mirror the real work of adults in the field. Rather than learning
about math, science, writing, history, and so on, students must become
mathematicians, scientists, authors, and historians to build true
disciplinary understanding. When a topic is assigned to a curriculum, we
need to ask: When, where, and ho.

#BLC17 Rebranding through Social Media HandoutChris Shade
The foundation of a PLC rests upon the four pillars of mission, vision, values, and goals. A PLC begins by exploring these questions: Why do we exist, or what is our mission? What must our school become to accomplish our vision? How must we behave—what values must we demonstrate—to achieve our vision? And how we will mark our progress toward our goals? While the PLC process is often a campus-based process, Denton ISD took the lead in embracing it to drive the district mission, vision, values, and goals.
To answer the first question, Denton ISD embraced the power of social media (i.e. Facebook Twitter, YouTube, etc.) and rebranded its mission using feedback from its stakeholders. Using crowdsourcing, a concept embedded in the mission statement, the district involved contributors from all over the world to create its logo. In determining its values, DISD used the power of technology to reach out to 30,000 members of its community. What followed was a set of values the district used to develop an alternative community accountability report (in addition to the state ratings system based on standardized assessment, the lowest rated community value). The interactive report not only reflects the community’s values, but drives the district goal setting process.
How did the district do it? How did the district do it with a ZERO budget? Find out in this session led by Chris Shade, the Coordinator of District Improvement and Innovation.
I had a remarkable idea the other day; and I decided to pitch it at the ACET conference.
We currently spent upwards of $2,000 to print parent compacts just to check a box on the NCLB/ESSA compliance report and store them for 7 years in the highly unlikely event TEA will audit our compacts. Compacts are printed on duplicate as a matter of principle. (It seems odd to have a parent sign an agreement and turn around and take it away from them to store in a box.) If I’m being generous in my assumptions, 99.9% of parents toss the compact in the trash. (As a parent, I did.)
Then I got to thinking…what if we took a different approach? What if we tied the ReadyRosie videos to the compact (i.e. When parents ask, what can I do to help my child?, we can answer by guiding them to use the videos.).
While crafting the presentation I did on the topic at ACET, Make Compacts Great Again (see attached) or go to . I shared some of the videos with my wife, Tenille, a fourth grade English/Language Arts/Reading teacher (and now an ELAR consultant/coach for ESC Region 11) who said (several times), “Wow. That’s what teachers do. Those are great!” Two of our district coordinators/coaches (reading and math) worked alongside Ready Rosie to align RR videos to our curriculum units of study had the same opinion.
And for our younger grades, what if we included what parents could do to contribute to their child reading on grade level by third grade? In my presentation, I cited research that noted that 4 out of the 5 greatest predictors of 3rd grade reading are a result of what happens OUTSIDE the classroom in children’s home and community experiences. (According to The Annie E. Casey Foundation’s report, Early Warning Confirmed: A Research Update on Third Grade Reading, research points to five main factors that contribute to third grade reading proficiency: School Readiness, Chronic Absence, Summer Learning, Family Stressors, and High Quality Teaching.)
Further, I wondered, what if we made it simple? What if we merely asked parents to do three things. Read. Play. Talk.
Granted, this is not an original idea. I initially heard the phrase from Mesquite ISD, but I've found it’s being used in some variation by a number of other places such as the U.S. Department of Ed, Boston, Kansas City, and as far away as Scotland, so I don’t necessarily feel bad using the idea.
A couple of other notes to consider. Compacts do NOT have to be signed. There is nothing in the ESSA law that requires a signature or even a piece of paper. Thus, it can be electronic. A rep from the TEA sponsored Title I statewide school support and family and community engagement office attended the session and supported the idea and concurred it could be electronic.
Think about how much longer the current model of education can sustain itself. The industrialized model of education is nearing its end. Is this frightening or exciting? It’s no more fearful than how the farmers must’ve felt when leaving the fields for the factory. And look how that turned out. America became the world’s most prosperous nation. We are on the cusp of another breakthrough, but it requires another seismic shift in thought.
Play with these ideas and come prepared to stretch your thoughts and challenge assumptions, while pondering some of the biggest questions facing the future of education.

The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

Curriculum should lay out the most
effective ways of achieving specific results.
It is analogous to travel planning. Our
frameworks should provide a set of
itineraries deliberately designed to meet
cultural goals rather than a purposeless
tour of all the major sites in a foreign
country.
We can best decide, as guides, what “sites”
to have our student “tourists” visit and
what specific “culture” they should
experience in their brief time there only if
we are clear about the particular
understandings about the culture we want
them to take home.
The appropriateness of this approach
becomes clearer when we consider the
educational purpose that is the focus of
this book: understanding. We cannot say
how to teach for understanding or which
material and activities to use until we are
quite clear about which specific
understandings we are after and what such
understandings look like in practice.
But many teachers begin with and remain
focused on textbooks, favored lessons, and
time-honored activities—the inputs—
rather than deriving those means from
what is implied in the desired results—the
output.

Consider a typical episode of what might
be called content-focused design instead of
results-focused design. The teacher might
base a lesson on a particular topic (e.g.,
racial prejudice), select a resource (e.g., To
Kill a Mockingbird), choose specific
instructional methods based on the
resource and topic (e.g., Socratic seminar
to discuss the book and cooperative groups
to analyze stereotypical images in films and
on television), and hope thereby to cause
learning (and meet a few English/language
arts standards). Finally, the teacher might
think up a few essay questions and quizzes
for assessing student understanding of the
book.
This approach is so common that we may
well be tempted to reply, What could be
wrong with such an approach? The short
answer lies in the basic questions of
purpose: Why are we asking students to
read this particular novel—in other words,
what learnings will we seek from their
having read it? Do the students grasp why
and how the purpose should influence
their studying? What should students be
expected to understand and do upon
reading the book, related to our goals
beyond the book? Unless we begin our
design work with a clear insight into larger
purposes—whereby the book is properly
thought of as a means to an educational
10. end, not an end unto itself—it is unlikely
that all students will understand the book
(and their performance obligations).

Answering the “why?” and “so what?”
questions that older students always ask
(or want to), and doing so in concrete
terms as the focus of curriculum planning,
is thus the essence of understanding by
design. What is difficult for many teachers
to see (but easier for students to feel!) is
that, without such explicit and transparent
priorities, many students find day-to-day
work confusing and frustrating.

concepts, principles) and skills (processes,
procedures, strategies) will students need
in order to perform effectively and achieve
desired results? What activities will equip
students with the needed knowledge and
skills? What will need to be taught and
coached, and how should it best be taught,
in light of performance goals? What

Note that the specifics of instructional
planning—choices about teaching
