Deficit irrigation of row crops

Abstract In the present study, flood frequency analysis has been applied for river Kosi in Uttarakhand. The river Kosi is an important tributary of Ganga river system, which arising from Koshimool near Kausani, Almora district flows on the western side of the study area and to meet at Ramganga River. The annual flood series analysis has been carried out to estimate the flood quantiles at different return period at Kosi barrage site of river Kosi. The statistical approach provided a significant advantage of estimation of flood at any sites in the homogenous region with very less or no data. In the at –site analysis of annual flood series the Normal, Log normal, Pearson type III, Log Pearson type III, Gumbel and Log Gumbel distribution were applied using method of moments . From the analysis of different goodness of fit tests, it has been found that the Log Gumbel distribution with method of moment as parameters estimation found to be the best-fit distribution for Kosi River and other sites in the region. It is recommended that the regional parameters for Kosi Basin may be used only for primary estimation of flood and should be reviewed when more regional data available. The life cycle involves nursery rearing of fry from 2-5 grams to 5-10 centimeters, then grow out in ponds or cages to a market size of 300-400 grams in 3-4 months or 700-1200 grams in 8-12 months. Asian sea bass, also known as giant perch or Bhetki, is a profitable species for aquaculture in Southeast Asia. It can be cultured in both freshwater and saltwater. Hatcheries in Thailand produce sea bass fry that are also exported to other countries. Major challenges for sea bass culture are cannibalism among young fish and dependence on fishmeal. The life cycle involves nursery rearing of fry from 2-5 grams to 5-10 centimeters, then grow out in ponds or cages to a market size of 300-400 grams in 3-4 months or 700-1200 grams in 8-12 months. Abstract: Different kinds of fishing gears used along the Ulhas River estuary (URE) were studied for their make and methods of operation. Most of the gears were designed indigenously to suit the availability of the amenable fishery species. The overall chronospatial pattern of frequency of gears operation was obtained using PRIMER v6 software. The use of gears was most frequent and diverse towards the lower reaches of the estuary. Late post-monsoon season was the most affluent in gear frequency. The important fishing methods used along the URE was ‘vana’ (barrier net), ‘busa’ (surface gill-net), ‘dol’ (stationary bag net) and ‘malli’ (basin method for capturing mudskippers on mud-flats). The fishing was carried for subsistence or artisanal levels at major while commercial fishing was highly reduced in URE. Abstract— Present study was conducted in the river Chota Bhagirathi in Malda district of West Bengal to assess the productivity of fish-pens and its impact on economic condition of the pen farmers. Fifteen pen farmers were selected for the study and their age ranged from 25-40 yrs. Among them 53.33% were 31-35 yrs old and 33.33% were within 36-40 yrs. Individual pen farming area varied from 3.0 ha to > 6.0 ha in the river Chota Bhagirathi. According to the size, pens were categorized into three groups: small pen (3.0-4.5 ha), medium pen (4.6-6.0 ha) and big pen (> 6.0 ha). Small pen farmers contributed 40.00%, medium pens 33.33% and big pens 26.67% of the total pen farming area in the river. The lease amount of pens varied according to pen area. Maximum fish production achieved from P1 (3281 kg/ha/year), P7 (3333 kg/ha/year), P8 (3444 kg/ha/year), P9 (3225 kg/ha/year) and P10 (3279 kg/ha/year) compared with other pens. P1 (Rs. 1,14,474 ha/year) earned highest profit and P8 (Rs. 1,06,771 ha/year) was second highest among 15 pens. Gulf of Mannar is a suitable environment for the study of Polychaetes with special reference to their systematics, spatial and temporal distribution. It has a number of islands and estuaries and a variety of environments such as, mangroves, coral reefs, pearl oyster beds, sea weed and sea grass beds. Hence, a study was conducted for 2 years by collecting samples from 21 stations covering all the ecologically important locations such as, 13 sea bottoms surrounding the islands, 4 estuaries, 3 intertidal regions, and 1 backwater using standard methods. A total of 49 species were identified, out of which 34 are found to be new records to the area. If we take this and the earlier reports in to consideration the total number comes to 144 species and 33 species up to genus level. This study was aimed to know the sedimentation rate and the total suspended solid of the estuary in
relation to the implementation of melombo culture practice area. The sedimentation rate was measured using
sediment traps placed in 3 set stations and data were taken for 8 months of two weeks interval. The sediment
traps weremade of PVC pipe, 11.5 cm long and 5 cm diameter and located at 20 cm above the sea bottom.
Sediment samples were firstly soaked in freshwater for approximately 4 hours to remove salt content.

Dr. Abhijit Mitra, Associate Professor and former Head, Dept. of Marine Science, University of Calcutta (INDIA) has been active in the sphere of Oceanography since 1985. He obtained his Ph.D as NET qualified scholar in 1994. Since then he joined Calcutta Port Trust and WWF (World Wide Fund), in various capacities to carry out research programmes on environmental science, biodiversity conservation, climate change and carbon sequestration. Presently Dr. Mitra is serving as the advisor of Oceanography Division of Techno India University, Kolkata. He has to his credit about 388 scientific publications in various National and International journals, and 34 books of postgraduate standards. Dr. Mitra has successfully completed about 16 projects on biodiversity loss in fishery sector, coastal pollution, alternative livelihood, climate change and carbon sequestration. Dr. Mitra also visited as faculty member and invited speakers in several foreign Universities of Singapore, Kenya, Oman and USA. In 2008, Dr. Mitra was invited as visiting fellow at University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth, USA to deliver a series of lecture on Climate Change. Dr. Mitra also successfully guided 29 Ph.D students. Presently his domain of expertise includes environmental science, mangrove ecology, sustainable aquaculture, alternative livelihood, climate change and carbon sequestration.

Seagrass and Carbon Studies in Indonesian Waters

Diversity of macrobenthos in karanja creek
A total of 93 species of macrobenthos belonging to 69 genera and 44 families were recorded from selected sites along the Karanja creek during present investigation (January 2004 to December 2005). The benthic fauna recorded, is highly diversified, heterogeneous in size and was represented by gastropods, crustaceans, pelecypods, polychaetes, echinoderms, coelenterates, cephalopods and poriferans in order of species abundance. Macro and micro algae of divisions chlorophyta, cyanophyta, rhodophyta, bracillariophyta and pheophyta, dominated the benthic flora of the creek.
Exclusive mangrove species recorded from the creek belongs to families Avicenniaceae, Euphorbiaceae and Rhizophoraceae. Among gastropods, Nerita oryzarum, Planaxis sulcatus, Bursa tuberculata were found abundantly whereas Murex adustus , Bursa elegans and Bursa lissostroma were recorded rarely. Among bivalves, Placenta placenta recorded from Karanja creek was with clean, luster white and large shells. Polychaetes like Perinereis cultrifera, Perinereis vancauria and Pseudonereis anamola were commonly reported. Presence of three species of sea
lilies (Antedon bifida, Antedon pitasus and Antedon rosacea) and one species of sea urchin (Echinus esculantus) is a unique diversity characteristic from Karanja creek
and no earlier reports are available for presence of such a number of echinoderm species in and around Mumbai coast. At present, Karanja creek supports rich diversity of molluscs, crustaceans and echinoderms, but in future, measures must be taken for protection and conservation of macrobenthos diversity.

A culture experiment was conducted to see the growth and production performance of Vietnamese koi (Anabas testudineus) with Magur (Clarias batrachus) at different stocking densities in a farmer's ponds under semi-intensive rearing system for a period of 120 days. The experiment was conducted in three ponds at Rahmatpur of Muktagachha Upazila of Mymensingh district from 5 August to 5 December, 2013. The size of ponds were 24 (T 1), 24 (T 2) and 24 (T 3) decimal with an average depth of 4 feet. Three different stocking densities were tested, namely treatments T 1 (400 fish /decimal, 350 Vietnamese koi and 50 magur); T 2 (450 fish /decimal, 400 Vietnamese koi and 50 Magur) and T 3 (550 fish /decimal, 500 Vietnamese koi and 50 Magur). Ruposhi Bangla feed was used in all treatments two times daily from the beginning of the fry stocking. The initial weight of Vietnamese koi and Magur were 5±0.00 g and 2±0.00 g respectively. The initial length of Vietnamese koi and Magur were 2.54 and 3.50 cm respectively. The average highest final weight gain of Vietnamese koi was (138.71±0.03 g) observed in T 1 and followed by T 2 (135.65±0.12 g) and T 3 (129.29±0.49 g). Similarly, the average highest final weight gain of Magur (76.00±0.58 g) was observed in T 1 and followed by T 2 (68.36±0.43 g) and T 3 (62.61±0.58 g) respectively. The average highest final length gain of Vietnamese koi (17.38±0.05 cm) was observed in T 1 and followed by T 2 (17.00±0.04 cm) and T 3 (16.33±0.03 cm). Similarly, the average highest final length gain of Magur (21.30±0.09 cm) was observed in T 1 and followed by T 2 (17.00±0.05 cm) and T 3 (15.87±0.02 cm) respectively. The survival rate of the stocking Vietnamese koi and Magur were recorded 95.14 and 72.00 % in T 1 ; 93.25 and 64.00% in T 2 ; 90.80 and 68.00 % in T 3 respectively. Fish production in T 1 , T 2 and T 3 were 48.93; 52.79 and 60.83 kg/decimal/120 days, respectively. The total production of T 3 was increased with the increasing of stocking density compare to T 2 and T1. The benefit-cost ratio (BCR) was higher in T 3 where BCR was 1.67 and on the other two treatments BCR was 1.53 in T 2 and 1.52 in T 1 although the highest production was obtained in T 3 but individually growth performance of Vietnamese koi and Magur were higher in T 1. Based on the result of the present experiment, farmers could be suggested to rear Vietnamese koi with Magur at the stocking density of 550 fish/decimal (500 Vietnamese koi and 50 Magur) which was the highest density tried to get more production and financial benefit. Further experiment need to be conducted by taking higher density than the 550 fish/decimal for the optimization of stocking density to get more production and benefit.

Total fish production in Odisha has increased from 386,185 tonnes in 2010-11 to 469,548 tonnes in 2014-15. Freshwater production comes primarily from tanks and ponds, accounting for 84% of freshwater production in 2014-15. Brackishwater production includes cultured shrimp and fisheries catch. Asian seabass is one of the candidate species for aquaculture because of the wide range of water quality tolerance, growth performance, and consumer preference. The Indian and Western Pacific Oceans are where Asian seabass is found in its natural habitat. It can be cultured in the earthen pond, floating or stationer cages, and recirculating system. Seed resources are available in rivers and lakes of fresh water, but aquaculture is the depending on the hatchery that produces seed because of the superior growth production. In the nursery phase, cannibalism is predominant in Asian seabass cultivation, which will improve via the grading of a shooter. Feeding is one of the important management for good growth performance and reducing cannibalism to give the optimum feed requirements. The growth rate of the Asian seabass is 400-600 g in 4 to 6 months. Asian seabass farmers are suffering from some infectious and non-infection diseases, it will improve via the good management practices of the culture promises. In this review paper, some key points of Asian seabass farming are covered for better understanding.

Among districts, Gir Somnath produced the highest volume of fish landings at 3.87 lakh tonnes. Multiday trawlers were the most productive mechanized fishing method.

Ukai dam is located on tapti river at 90 km , distance having 62,225 sq km catchment area . 2. kakarapar weir is situated having 62,801 sq. km catchment area, at distance of 120 km.

- 5. Ukai dam constructed in 1972 and construction cost is 1389.6 Million. The site is located 94 km from Surat. Height - 80.772 metres ( 270 ft ). Length – 4,927 metres ( 16,000 ft ). Catchment area – 62,225 Kilometre square. Water spread of about 52.000 ha .

After the initial stocking, fishing was not allowed for three years to facilitate building-up of a stock of carps. During the period between 1972 and 1977, more then 5 million fry/fingerling (30-150 mm) of catla (40.9%), rohu (29.0%) and mrigal (30.1%) were stocked into the reservoir, along with 1600 of their brooders.
