Typhoid fever is a life-threatening illness caused by the Salmonella Typhi bacterium. It affects the intestines and bloodstream and symptoms include sustained high fever, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. The disease is contracted through ingestion of food or water contaminated by the feces of infected individuals. While antibiotics can effectively treat the infection, multidrug-resistant strains are emerging. Prevention relies on vaccination, safe food and water practices, and hygiene.
