WHAT IS EVALUATION
Evaluation is a systematic determination of a
subject's merit, worth and significance, using
criteria governed by a set of standards. It can
assist an organization, program, project or any
other intervention or initiative to assess any
aim, realisable concept/proposal, or any
alternative, to help in decision-making; or to
ascertain the degree of achievement or value
in regard to the aim and objectives and results
of any such action that has been completed.
TYPES OF EVALUATION
DIAGNOSTIC EVALUATION
Is normally undertaken before
instruction, in order to assess
students’ prior knowledge of a
particular topic or lesson.
Formative evaluation
Is usually administerd during the
instructional process to provide
feedback to students and teachers
on how well the former are
learning the lesson being taught.
Summative evaluation
Is undertaken to determine
student achievement for
grading purposes.
Approach to evaluation
According to Escarilla and
Gonzales (1990) there are two
approaches to evaluation, namely:
norm referenced and criterion
referenced.
Norm referenced
evaluation
Is one wherein the performance of
a student in a test is compared
with the performance of the other
students who took the same
examinataion.
Examples
1. Karl’s score in the periodical examination is
below is mean
2. Cynthia ranked fifth in the unit test in physics
3. Rey’s percentile rank in the math
achievement test is 88.
criterion referenced.
On the order hand, is an approach
to evaluation wherein a students
performance is compared is
compared against a predetermined
or agreed upon standard
Examples
1. Sid can construct a pie graph
WITH 75% ACCURACY
2. Yves scored 7 out of 10 in the
spelling test.
3. Lito can encode an article with
no more than 5 errors in spellin.
basic guidelines in
educational assessment,
measurement and
evaluation
1. Teacher need to know how
much they are doing
2. Students need to know how well
they are doing
3. evidence feedback and input
data for knowing how well the
students and teacher are doing
4. Evaluation and continuing
process to check on programs and
modify adopt strategies to
promote desired behavior.
5. the procedures used for
assessing student learning must be
compatible with instructional
objectives.
