The document discusses different types of social media including blogging, microblogging, social networking, media sharing, social news and bookmarking, online forums, and widgets. It describes blogging as a form of content management that allows users to easily write and publish posts. Microblogging is similar but limits posts to short texts about what the user is doing. Social networking connects users with friends through profiles with personal information. Media sharing allows uploading photos and videos for public view. Social news and bookmarking provide links to online content that users can rate, vote on, and share with others. Online forums are spaces for discussion around topics of interest. Widgets are another potential type of social media.
rticles reporting the success of social media for business, corporations and other dot-coms are a dime a dozen- they're everywhere! We know it can work for them, but what about us? Can non-profits, who operate in an environment of limited resources, expect the same sort of returns as big biz, and how? What should we consider before we decide to invest in social media?

A Network-Aware Approach for Searching As-You-Type in Social MediaINRIA-OAK
We present a novel approach for as-you-type top-k keyword search over social media. We adopt a natural "network-aware" interpretation for information relevance, by which information produced by users who are closer to the seeker is considered more relevant. In practice, this query model poses new challenges for effectiveness and efficiency in online search, even when a complete query is given as input in one keystroke. This is mainly because it requires a joint exploration of the social space and classic IR indexes such as inverted lists. We describe a memory-efficient and incremental prefix-based retrieval algorithm, which also exhibits an anytime behavior, allowing to output the most likely answer within any chosen running-time limit. We evaluate it through extensive experiments for several applications and search scenarios , including searching for posts in micro-blogging (Twitter and Tumblr), as well as searching for businesses based on reviews in Yelp. They show that our solution is effective in answering real-time as-you-type searches over social media.

67% of admissions officers surveyed in 2015 said they had looked up college applicants on Facebook. And 40% didn’t like what they found.
These days, social media comes with great responsibility, whether you're just starting high school or finishing up college. On one hand, it’s a convenient way to communicate and connect with others...but on the other hand, it can be detrimental if used irresponsibly. It can impact the impression college admissions officers or employers have of you and cost you a spot at your dream school or a job.
The good news is that most of the bad consequences are preventable and easy to avoid with some foresight.
Here are 10 social media mistakes high school students should avoid...and keep in mind that social media circumstances vary by school, user and situation, so use your best judgement and think twice when you share something publicly.
Are you the parent of a high school student? We have tips for planning for college, writing college application essays, applying to and affording college at our site, http://yourcollegeconcierge.net. We help YOU help YOUR CHILD succeed.

On building more human query answering systemsINRIA-OAK
The underlying principle behind every query answering system is the existence of a query describing the information of interest. When this model is applied to non-expert users, two traditional issues become highly significant.
The first is that many queries are often over specified leading to empty answers. We propose a principled optimization-based interactive query relaxation framework for such queries. The framework computes dynamically and suggests alternative queries with less conditions to help the user arrive at a query with a non-empty answer, or at a query for which it is clear that independently of the relaxations the answer will always be empty.
The second issue is the lack of expertise from the user to accurately describe the requirements of the elements of interest. The user may though know examples of elements that would like to have in the results. We introduce a novel form of query paradigm in which queries are not any more specifications of what the user is searching for, but simply a sample of what the user knows to be of interest. We refer to this novel form of queries as Exemplar Queries.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
