Tuberculosis is caused by the Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacteria which most commonly affects the lungs. It spreads through airborne droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Common symptoms include cough, fever, chills, night sweats and unintended weight loss. There are three stages of TB: exposure, latent infection where the person feels healthy but tests positive for TB, and active disease where the bacteria multiply causing symptoms and ability to spread. Treatment for drug-sensitive TB involves taking multiple antibiotics for 6 months while drug resistant TB requires longer treatment up to 2 years with additional drugs.
