OBJECTIVES
Upon the completion of this lesson, you will be
able to Know :-
 What is Tsunami
 About tsunami warning system(TWS)
 Types and working of TWS
 Advantages of TWS
TSUNAMI
 The word Tsunami is a Japanese word
meaning “harbor waves”.
 A tsunami is a series of traveling ocean waves
of extremely long length
 It generated by disturbance associated by
primarily with earthquakes occurring below or
near the ocean floor.
TSUNAMI WARNING SYSTEM
 A tsunami warning system is used to detect
tsunami in advance and issue warning to prevent
loss of life and damage.
 This system consist of two main parts.
TWS
NETWORK OF SENSORS
COMMUNICATION
INFRASTRUCTURE
WORKING OF TWS
 Network of seismic monitoring station at sea
floor detects presence of earthquake.
 Seismic monitoring station determines location
and depth of earthquake having potential to
cause tsunami.
 Any resulting tsunami are verified by sea level
monitoring station such as DART buoys, tidal
gauge.
WORKING OF TWS
TRANSMITTER BUOY
TYPES OF TWS
 There are two distinct types of tws
TWS
Regional warning
system
International warning
system
ADVANTAGE OF TWS
 Can be used to provide early warnings of
tsunamis
 It has always been in operation in the ocean.
 Enabling emergency messages to be sent to
the emergency services and forces.
 Continuously monitors and confirms tsunami
waves following an earthquake
