Prioritizing Crop Wild Relatives Collecting

There are certain cases in the field of bioprospecting which have made quite an outbreak to commercialize ceratain biological products. Government and legal bodies, if they make dealy in reaching agreements can put an end to research after promising compounds or their derivatives have been synthesized. It is also possible that many government agencies like the customs and public health officials responsible for overseeing and processing forms and documents linked to bioprospecting could be seeing them for the prime time and hence lack the experience needed to handle such paperwork . In such cases political will needs to be directed towards orienting, arraying and training concerned officials in matters related to bioprospecting activities(Andrioli et al.,2004).

CEAP involves research at watershed networks, national assessments, literature reviews, and watershed case studies. The goals are to develop the science behind managing agricultural landscapes for environmental quality and provide data demonstrating the outcomes of conservation programs. Fifteen years of research in CEAP watershed networks are helping to validate models, demonstrate improvements in water and soil quality from conservation practices, and enable targeting practices to sensitive areas.

The Global Taxonomy Initiative (GTI) was developed by the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) to address the lack of taxonomic information and expertise, known as the "taxonomic impediment", which undermines conservation efforts. The GTI aims to facilitate access to taxonomic knowledge to inform decision-making. It has a program of work comprising 19 activities within 5 operational objectives focused on assessing needs, building capacity, facilitating information access, generating taxonomic information to support CBD thematic programs, and cross-cutting issues. Parties to the CBD and other organizations collaborate under the GTI to advance global taxonomic research and training.

Encouraging examples include attention to human well-being, attempts to work collaboratively with communities and their subgroups, a focus on power relations (devolution, ethnic and gender studies), and attention to people’s knowledge about forests. More controversial topics like swidden agriculture, human health, nutrition, human rights and population have also been addressed. But much remains to be done.

Over 850 million people worldwide are undernourished and nearly 2 billion suffer from micronutrient deficiencies. Sub-Saharan Africa has the highest rates of undernourishment at over 17% of its population, while South and East Asia also have significant populations suffering from lack of food. Global population is projected to increase from 7 billion in 2010 to over 9 billion by 2050 and 10 billion by 2100, placing additional stress on food production. Agricultural practices must adapt to climate change through strategies like improved irrigation and more resilient crop varieties, while also pursuing mitigation efforts such as restoring degraded lands, to help ensure future global food security.

Brazil nuts are harvested from giant trees in the Amazon rainforest, especially in Brazil, Bolivia, and Peru. In Peru, the government has established a concession system where families have rights to collect nuts from designated areas of forest. A scientist observed a 60-year-old woman's concession being harvested by a worker, counting the nuts extracted from fallen fruits to study the impact of selective timber logging on nut production. The worker sealed sacks of around 2,000 kilograms of shelled nuts to be transported from the forest for processing and international export.

Agrarian change in tropical forests: A change for the better?

Agricultural expansion has resulted in losses to habitats, forests, ecosystems and biological diversity. Socio-ecological research methods were used to assess the livelihood impacts of agrarian change across the forest transition in six tropical landscapes in Zambia, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Indonesia and Bangladesh. Early findings suggest the transition from a forested landscape to a more agrarian-dominated system does not immediately result in better livelihood outcomes, and there may be unintended consequences. This presentation was given by Terry Sunderland at the 53rd Annual Meeting of the Association for Tropical Biology and Conversation.
