INTRODUCTION
Wildlife corridor joins two or more larger
areas of similar wildlife habitat (Burkart et
al., 2016).
 Plays important role in the conservation
of biodiversity
Corridors enable migration, colonisation
and interbreeding of plants and animals.
(NBSAP, 2014-2020) Source: TAL Strategy 2015-2025
Source: Bennett, G. And Mulongoy, K.J.
WHY ARE CORRIDORS IMPORTANT?
Wildlife Corridors:
• Allow the movement of birds, reptiles, mammals, frogs, invertebrates, plant
seeds and fungal spores.
• Provide habitat for migratory and resident wildlife.
• Provide refuge for wildlife that use nearby limited-value habitat such as open
paddocks.
• Allow species to re-colonise patches of vegetation.
• Enable the exchange of genes between wildlife populations
• Reduce the possibility of inbreeding.
• Maintain species richness at patch and landscape scales.
• Maintain ecosystem processes such as pollination.
STATUS
 GON has identified seven corridors such as Barandabhar, Basanta, Khata,
Laljhadi Mohana, Kamdi, Brahmadev and Karnali in TAL area
Kali Gandaki, Seti, Marsyangdi, Daraundi, Budhi Gandaki and Trishuli
rivers are naturally occurring river corridors(Sharma 2013, CHAL Strategy
2016-2025)
3. LITERATURE REVIEW
Interest in restoring ecological integrity has been growing over the past
30 years particularly through the establishment of transboundary
protected areas.
Establishment of ecological networks and biodiversity corridors in
countries around the world has accelerated since 2000.
A march 2006 global assessment identified the establishment of 200
ecological network/corridor programmes, 26 migratory bird flyways and
188 transboundary complexes all attesting to this growing interest
(Bennett and mulongoy 2006).
THREAT AND OPPORTUNITY
OPPORTUNITIES
•Rich and unique biodiversity
•Economic Potential
•Accessibility
•Climate initiative and carbon financing
•Existing institutions and service provider
•Indigenous knowledge and practices
THREATS
Major threats to Biodiversity Corridors in Nepal:
• Land use change
• Riverbank cutting
• Agricultural expansion
• Uncontrolled grazing
• Infrastructure (Example; Khata Corridor due to Hulaki road)
• Illegal Logging
• Forest Fire
CONCLUSION
• Aid in the movement of wildlife through an area
• Ensures their long-term survival of animal
• Biological corridor conservation has been initiated by
governments, research institutions and NGOs.
• Successful initiatives depend on finding workable ways of
dealing with ‘boundaries’ at all tiers of government levels:
political, jurisdictional, socio-economic, cultural and legal.
• Management should aim to retain and enhance the existing
vegetation cover and wildlife habitats.
RECOMMENDATION
Lessons for Nepal that emerge from national and international experience
with conservation corridors and the laws that enable them indicate that a
regulatory framework should:
• Be based on policy that outlines a clear national vision and strategy for connectivity
conservation;
• Empower government institutions, community groups and individuals, research
institutions and NGOs to initiate and participate in connectivity conservation initiatives;
• Enable incentives for all stakeholders – the public and private sectors, communities and
individuals;
• Require monitoring and evaluation of the effectiveness of corridors and their contribution
to local livelihoods and to biodiversity conservation objectives at the national, sub-
national and local levels.

  • 7. 3. LITERATURE REVIEW Interest in restoring ecological integrity has been growing over the past 30 years particularly through the establishment of transboundary protected areas. Establishment of ecological networks and biodiversity corridors in countries around the world has accelerated since 2000. A march 2006 global assessment identified the establishment of 200 ecological network/corridor programmes, 26 migratory bird flyways and 188 transboundary complexes all attesting to this growing interest (Bennett and mulongoy 2006).

  • 9. THREATS Major threats to Biodiversity Corridors in Nepal: • Land use change • Riverbank cutting • Agricultural expansion • Uncontrolled grazing • Infrastructure (Example; Khata Corridor due to Hulaki road) • Illegal Logging • Forest Fire
  • 10. CONCLUSION • Aid in the movement of wildlife through an area • Ensures their long-term survival of animal • Biological corridor conservation has been initiated by governments, research institutions and NGOs. • Successful initiatives depend on finding workable ways of dealing with ‘boundaries’ at all tiers of government levels: political, jurisdictional, socio-economic, cultural and legal. • Management should aim to retain and enhance the existing vegetation cover and wildlife habitats.
  • 11. RECOMMENDATION Lessons for Nepal that emerge from national and international experience with conservation corridors and the laws that enable them indicate that a regulatory framework should: • Be based on policy that outlines a clear national vision and strategy for connectivity conservation; • Empower government institutions, community groups and individuals, research institutions and NGOs to initiate and participate in connectivity conservation initiatives; • Enable incentives for all stakeholders – the public and private sectors, communities and individuals; • Require monitoring and evaluation of the effectiveness of corridors and their contribution to local livelihoods and to biodiversity conservation objectives at the national, sub- national and local levels.
