On Dumpster Diving Rhetorical Analysis
Lars Eighner represents the thousands of homeless people that have simply fallen victim of
financial struggles, holding strongly onto his respect for others, his community, and himself,
despite the difficulties he faces. According to Eighner s website, he spent time at the University of
Austin, Texas studying creative writing, which is clear through his writing techniques and narrative
style. However after falling on hard times, Eighner ended up homeless. While homeless in the late
80 s Eighner composed the essay On Dumpster Diving. It need not take long for one to find his
purpose in writing the essay. Dumpster diving and homelessnessare deeply connected to a notion of
poor life choices, mental illness, and substance abuse. And while Eighner doesn t deny that many
people he encounters are winos, Eighner s purpose is to represent dumpster diving, in sense, as an
art; reclaiming homelessness as a modern form of self reliance. ... Show more content on

survival without asking for handouts. And furthermore Eighners draws on the logical reality that

Counseling Theory Critique: The Bondage Breaker by Neil T. Anderson Dealing with the demonic
should be seen as a truth encounter rather than a power encounter (Anderson, 2000, p. 258) this
quote by Anderson, 2000, basically sums up his entire counseling theory in The Bondage Breaker.

actually demonic strongholds over the mind. Throughout his ... Show more content on

Another weakness to Anderson s theory is that he negates the reality of some physical ailments
and instead attributes them to demonic forces. While this may be fact in some cases, this theory
is farfetched in my personal opinion. Even Anderson s example of Dee and her bout with MS is
questionable as he notes a few pages after describing her miraculous recovery after completing
his steps that some cases of MS are degenerative and some display symptoms which come and go
such as seemed the case with Dee (Anderson, 2000). This type of theory comes under scrutiny by
people outside of the Christian faith and makes Christians look like quacks since we believe that
some supernatural force, not scientifically proven, is responsible for physical ailments able to be
treated by medicine. While I feel that many components go into diagnosing physical and mental
ailments I am cautious about subscribing to a belief that could do a person more harm than
good. As a skeptic of Anderson s theory I must consider stories I have heard of Christians
refusing medical treatment because of a belief that God would treat their ailment and later
suffering greatly because of this belief. I believe that God is all powerful and has the ability to
cure disease, however, I also believe that God has allowed us to develop modern medicine to treat
very real physical ailments and we should be careful not to negate

Analysis of the Novel Ishmael by Daniel Quinn Essay
Ishmael begins when the nameless narrator finds a newspaper ad that reads: Teacher seeks pupil.
Must have an earnest desire to save the world. Apply in person (4).
At first, he is angry, as it reminds him of the counterculture movement of the 1960s, which he
participated in only to discover that there was no easy way to save the world.
Nonetheless, he responds to the ad, and finds that the teacher is a gorilla. Behind the gorilla is a
sign that reads With man gone, will there be hope for gorilla? (9).
The gorilla, named Ishmael, can communicate telepathically. Communicating with him in this
fashion, the narrator learns Ishmael s background in which the gorilla was stolen from the wild and
displayed in a menagerie, then rescued by a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To hep understand how Takers pass along their story, Ishmael introduces a figure named Mother
Culture, who he insists reinforces the story through every facet of Taker society. Takers assume that
humans are the pinnacles of evolution, and that the world was made for man. This belief has led to
catastrophic results, yet the Taker story allows man to blame to gods. They believe the gods wishes
man to be in control, and so if man is fundamentally flawed, then the gods are responsible for
engendering the situation. Ishmael refuses to accept this premise, saying that the only thing wrong
with humans is that the story that they insist on enacting puts them at odds with the world.
Ishmael and the narrator also work to establish some immutable laws of life and species that have
allowed the world to survive for this long. They agree that a law of limited competition exists
amongst all species on Earth, and only man has taken exception to that law. In short, this law
suggests that any species may protect and look out for itself, but cannot wipe out another species. A
natural food chain must persist.
Ishmael next discusses the Genesis origin stories of Adam and Eve, and of Cain and Abel to explore
the meaning of the Taker story, and how it historically worked against the Leaver civilizations. He
claims that the Fall of Man story was actually developed by Leavers to explain why the Takers

During the Industrial Revolution (During a period between the 18th and 19th century which

Two of the major issues were the state of working conditions for lower paid workers including

During the Industrial revolution innumerable deaths were caused by the outbreak of infectious

were often overcrowded with up to thirty people living in one building at one time. Other
problems such as sewage leaks and pipe burst contributed to the spread of diseases. Polluted

Dog Memoir
Memoir
Although my family had talked about getting another dog I never actually thought we were really
going to. A couple days before we went to Lamancha, my parents had to fill out an application
online for permission to adopt a dog from them. The application included that we had to have
references and asked questions like where the dog would sleep, if my parents had kids and how old
they were, if we were good with dogs. All kinds of questions to make sure that the dog we picked

When they left, my family all got in the car and we drove to Lamancha; an animal rescue center.
When we got there and pulled in there were dogs everywhere, they surrounded the car. There
were probably about 15 dogs, both big and little. All the dogs eventually backed up and we were

We told the person who was working there what we were looking for. She brought us to the back
where there were three adult dogs; a boxer, a lab and a Pitbull and then we saw the three puppies.
The first puppy was an all black with a white shape that looked like a star on her stomach and a

The Ecstasy Of Saint Teresa Analysis
Rooted within John Berger s observations on the consumption of visual culture, in his 1972 book,
Ways of Seeing, is the statement that The relation between what we see and what we know is never
settled . Within the texts first chapter, Berger endeavours to illustrate the unique nature of
perception along with its vulnerability to influence. The author further comments on the loss of
independent thinking regarding artwork, instead being replaced by a state of false mystification .
The enigmatic nature of the Baroque piece, Girl with a Pearl Earring (c.1665), by Dutch artist
Johaness Vermeer, proves to allow for unique interpretations that are free from the learnt
assumptions often implemented by the elite art society. Berger s desire for... Show more content on

The dynamic piece fuses architecture, sculpture and fresco to create a theatre for the spectacle
which lies in the Cornaro Chapel. Bernini depicts the spiritual awakening of the Saint as she has
a vision of an angel, who plunges a spear into her heart. The sculpture attempts replicate the
sensation with the detailed facial expression of the Saint her eyes closed and mouth open which
displays a moment of spiritual pain and pleasure as she is consumed by her love for God. The
angle appears to wear a light cloth that wraps around his figure, whilst the mortal Saint wears a
heavy cloth, denoting a sense of stability associated with earth. The tangible quality of the cloth
further enhances the realism of her transcended state. The sculptures theatrical element is
foregrounded by the placement of a small hidden window which shines daylight onto the dramatic
event, illuminating the bronze shafts representing the golden rays of heaven above. Placed on the
surrounding walls are theatre boxes which seat the patrons who witness the climatic event.
Bernini s work contributed to the Counter Reformation propaganda, as it provided pictorial
evidence of the divine power of Christ to encourage faith amongst people of all social standing.
The composition of the chapel ensures that it s visitors experience the art which defies mundanity
and thus inspires awe and faith. In the promotion of intended context, Berger asserts that
reproduction of an artwork creates multiple meanings which defer with each spectator and their
respective contexts. His assertion may imply a scenario in which the grandeur and gravity of the
artwork is lost as it is perceived from a television screen in an ordinary living room or printed

Importance Of Common Stock By John Locke
When dealing with a common stock within a society, one would assume that taking from the
commons would leave other people worse off than they were before. However, this is not the case
according to John Locke. In the beginning of Locke s Second Treatise on Civil Government
(1690), he acknowledges that all men are equal and independent, no one ought to harm another in
his life liberty or possessions (В§ 6). This raises the question of whether taking from the commons
harms another person s interest or not. According to Locke, the common stock is everything that
God, as King David says (Psalm 115:16), has given the earth to the children of men (В§ 25). Locke
argues that taking from the commons would not affect the other people in society negatively, but it
would instead enhance the value of the commons themselves. Locke utilizes the abundancy of the
commons and the theory that applying one s labor to an object taken from the commons raises the
value of the common stock.
The First Objection to the Thesis Locke s first argument is that the commons are so abundant that
there is no need to worry about depleting resources. While discussing appropriation in the
commons, Locke infers that no man s labour could subdue or appropriate all, nor could his
enjoyment consume more than a small part (В§ 36). One man alone could not subdue all the
objects in the commons, but what does this mean when everyone is appropriating? This raises an
issue as resources in a society are never

Essay On Minorities In The Civil Rights Movement
Minorities face oppression in any society, each minority having a perspective and situation unique
to their own experience. The complex relationship between the Asian Americans and other people
of color s opinions regarding affirmative action, an outcome of the Civil Rights Movement in the
1960 s, act as a stark reminder of the different effects of past injustices and current inequalities
depending on the particular ethnic group. Affirmative action, essentially a policy designed to
compensation/reparation/redress for the present disadvantages which minorities face as a result
from past injuries and injustices throughout history with measures to improve their educational and
economic opportunities. However, with affirmative action providing special privileges to
minorities based solely on the color of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Systematic oppression and discrimination against people of color and immigrants have placed these
ethnic groups in present positions that fail to provide them with the necessary resources and
opportunities to maximize their full potential.Questions, however, start to surface about the fairness
of holding the American government and society responsible/accountable for the persecution that
African Americans and other minorities were submitted to. Although the past American society and
government did play roles in the suppression of the minorities throughout American history, the
current American government and society are now completely different entities. Comprised of a
variety of people from a multitude of backgrounds, the present day American government and
society differs greatly from their predecessors. If advocates of affirmative action justify it as a form
of compensation, then the usage of Affirmative action accepts and condones the idea of retribution.
It is unfair to hold the new diverse generation of Americans responsible for past persecution and

Somali Ethnic Groups
The History, Religion, and Traditions of Somalia s Ethnic Groups Somali ethnic groups do not only
live in Somalia, they live in northern Kenya, the Ogaden region of eastern Ethiopia, and Djibouti.
Even though Somali ethnic groups live in different places around Somalia, they still consider
themselves as one. The country of Somalia is best understood by learning about the Horn of Africa,
defining its common religion, and examining its rich traditions. Comprehending the history of the
Horn of Africais important in order to understand its effect on Somali ethnic groups. Unlike most of
African nations, Somalia is made up of single, homogeneous ethnic groups (Lewis). Somalia shares
a uniform language, religion, and culture that leads to a common ancestor. In the mid 1800s,
Somalia was broken down into several territories by Colonies. The French controlled the northern
region (the area that is now Djibouti), the British colonized northern Somalia (creating a country
called British Somaliland), Italians governed southern Somalia (creating Italian Somaliland),
Ethiopia controlled the region of Ogaden, and Kenya controlled the northern border that contains
Somalis (Lewis). In 1900, British Somaliland and Italian Somaliland peacefully obtained
independence and were united to form the current borders of Somalia (Lewis). After World War II,

A Brief Note On The Primary Function Of Exec
Lab 2
CSNB324
Muath Abdullah SN091649
Answer Q1:
Execv(): it is a prototype of exec family, v is added to indicate the type of argument which in this
case specified as a vector (array of character pointers). The primary function of exec () system call
is to execute a file or a program. This is done by creating a new process image from a regular,
executable file.
This file is either an interpreter script or an executable file object. It has the form execv(char
*path, char *argv[], char *envp[]). The path argument is the pathname of a file that contains the
new program to be executed. The argv array is a list of parameter strings, and the envp array is a
list of environment variable strings and values that should be used when the process begins
executing the new programs. When a process encounters the execve() system call, the next
instruction it executes will be the one at the entry point of the new executable file.
Execvp()
The created child process does not have to run the same program as the parent process does. The
exec type system calls allow a process to run any program files, which include a binary
executable or a shell script. On this page, we only discuss one such system call: execvp(). The
execvp() system call requires two arguments: 1. The first argument is a character string that
contains the name of a file to be executed.
2. The second argument is a pointer to an array of character strings. More precisely, its type is char
**, which is exactly identical to the

and William Charitable Contribution FACTS Recently, Katie and William had a baby named
Georgina. The couple is very famous and collectively worth $300,000,000. On December 3,
2015, the couple decided to sell the first photos of their newborn baby for $15,000,000 to a
national magazine. Katie and William plan to donate all of the proceeds to the American Red
Cross. They wish to complete this transaction as soon as possible because the paparazzi has been
harassing the family. In 2015, the couple will have a combined adjusted gross income of
$8,000,000, without any proceeds from baby pictures, and will file jointly. Katie and William are
expected to be in a similar taxable income situation in future years and tax rates are not expected
to change. ISSUE What are the tax implications if the couple sells the photos for $15,000,000 and
then claim a charitable contribution deduction on their 2015 joint tax return? Are there any
planning strategies to reduce the tax impact of the transaction? CONCLUSION Katie and William
would first have to recognize the $15,000,000 proceeds from the sale of the photo as income
along with the couple s combined adjusted gross income of $8,000,000 for 2015. They will be
limited to deducting only $11,500,000 of their charitable contribution in 2015 because of the 50

However, there was one main internal and one main external conflict that Shea sealed with. The
internal conflict appeared early on in Shea s adventure. When Shea started his journey to

their lives to help him, but he was giving them nothing in return. This affects Shea s actions
because it makes him try to contribute more than everyone else . The external conflict that takes
a large role in the book is the distance between Shea s homeland and the Skull Kingdom, where
the Warlock Lord resides. This huge area affects Shea s actions greatly, because it instills a sense
of foreboding about the journey, which makes Shea s decision to go on the journey all the more
important, because it reveals just how brave Shea is. The great journey also affects Shea s actions

Racism, Class, And Gender Discrimination
Social injustices are unfortunately still prevalent in today s modern society. Racism has come a
far way due to many social movements, however it still remains ingrained and institutionalized in
various forms. Race is a cause of political and economic interest who stratified groups in order to
gain more power. The government created social regulations to prevent social inequalities due to
race, class, and gender to take place. Despite social regulations racismstill is a part of out present
day society. Article 34 by Christine Williams discussed discrimination in the forms of class, gender,
and raceto women in particular. Stratification leads to racial and gender discrimination in
companies towards employees and customers. This is an analysis of discrimination in the
workforce to colored woman as well as businesses discrimination to colored consumers. Reading
Racism in Toyland describes the experiences and observations of a white woman while working
at two different toy stores. She talked about how in one of the toy stores the employees were
diverse however the few whites working at the store were cashiers. They were put as cashiers
because they re the ones that interact with the customers the most therefore seen as the face of the
company . The hire end toy store Williams worked at lacked diversity and the few colored
employees that worked there were discriminated against. Williams noticed how the customers

unification along, Germany as we know it today would not exist. The Germanic states would not
have unified as they did and the resulting wars that came about never would have played out. World
history, not just European history, would be far different without modern day Germany, and the
state that led to its emergence; however, Prussiadid not unify Germany overnight. Prussia worked
up to unification with a series of wars and interactions throughout their history. Prussia was formed
as a result of a series of crusades sanctioned by Pope Gregory IX against the pagan inhabitants of
the area. The group of knights that undertook the crusade formed the Teutonic Order. The Kingdom
of Prussiawas officially erected in 1701 by the order. The area that the knights had originally
inhabited to convert the indigenous peoples of the area was now an official political power.
Prussia was located largely in the Northern hemisphere and was surrounded by Russia, Hungary,
France, Belgium, and the Netherlands. It was one of the largest German states and held most of the
power within the Germanic area, where it competed mostly with Austria for power.

Prussia for unification was a man named Otto Von Bismarck. Otto Von Bismarck was a master

The Religious Freedom Restoration Act
The Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) is a federal law that was set up to protect the
free exercise of religion, as an undeniable right, protected by the First Amendment. Easy enough,
right however, it seems can be interpreted in different ways, some depending on what your
beliefs are i.e., religious or secular. Such as in the legal case of Burwell (U.S. Secretary of Health
and Human Services) vs. Hobby Lobby. Hobby Lobby argued that they should not have to pay for
contraceptives for their employees as part of their healthcare because contraceptives such as the
emergency contraception went against their religious beliefs because is an abortifacient.
I went into this with an open mind as I really didn t follow the case at the time and really didn t
know too much about it. I also did really know too much about what RFRA was from a legal
point of view. To help me fully understand I found the syllabus from this case in which part of the
first paragraph says: The Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 1993 (RFRA) prohibits the
Government [from] substantially burden [ing] a person s exercise of religion even if the burden
results from a rule of general applicability unless the Government demonstrates that application of
the burden to the person (1) is in furtherance of a compelling government interest; and (2) is the
least restrictive means of furthering that compelling government interest. (Supreme Court Of The
United States, 2013). The second paragraph reads:

Compcompare the Ways in Which Larkin and Abse Write About...
Compare the ways in which Larkin and Abse write about place. You must include detailed critical
discussion of at least two poems by Larkin in your response.

Larkin and Abse both write about places in a very different, very unique style. One the one hand
Larkin talks about the places of his past and how they are no longer accessible; the changing of a
beautiful, unspoilt place to something short of an eyesore; a pace he is in but does not feel he
belongs and even places within his mind. Alternatively Abse talks longingly of the places he once
lived in, and how upsetting it is to find they are no longer the same. Some examples of the copious

Moreover, in the first stanza when describing the rural area he repeatedly uses assonance. Skies
and scarecrows, haystacks, hares and pheasants these soft consonant sounds make you slow down
as the repeated s sounds become hard to say, slowing you down and not allowing you to rush past
these, in Larkin s case, beautiful little details of the countryside.
Furthermore, Larkin s poem Mr Bleaney refers to a place that the persona does not wish to be
in, yet has ended up having surrendering and suffers the consequences. Mr Bleaney is
essentially a poem about a circumstantial situation that is given as a dramatic monologue, and
rather like a drama, tells a story that is full of lucid mystery. The first half of the poem is slow
and deliberate and helps to create a macabre feel to the poem. A change of pace occurs in the
second half of the poem, though is not immediately apparent. It then seems to be despairingly
urgent, as Mr Bleaney subtly moves from a recollected past to an observed present, through his
mediation with the new tenant. In addition Larkin s use of listing creates a dull and monotonous
feel to the place, giving the reader the feel that no one, unless in a dire situation, would want to
suffer living in such an undesirable place. One may argue the most symbolic thing in the room is
the sixty watt bulb . Light is a commonly used symbol to portray

Essay about Air Pollution in Birmingham, Alabama
Air pollution continues to be a significant problem in the city of Birmingham, as it has been for
decades. No one enjoys walking the streets of Birmingham only to taste or smell the smoke and
particulates in the air, not to mention the damaging effects to one s health. Fortunately,
improvements have been made; forty years ago, residents of Birmingham could not even see the
skyline due to the immense amounts of particulates in the air, but now the skyline is visible on a
daily basis. The noticeable improvement indicates the progress that has been made over the years,
but there is still plenty of room for much needed improvement. Birmingham s air quality is among

For decades, the air quality in Birmingham did not meet EPA criteria, but crossed the threshold this
year. This achievement demonstrates the prominent progress made by the industries and residents
to improve air quality.
Although much improvement has been made, there is still more to be done. Spencer states that In
2011, the American Lung Association ranked Birmingham the eight worst city in the nation for
particle pollution, or soot (An Old Cloud of Polluted Air Lifts from Birmingham s Shoulders).
Birmingham s attempts at improving air quality have been valuable, but the air in Birmingham is
still dirty when compared to other industrial cities. Pollution continues to pose an enormous threat
to residents of urban cities worldwide. In the August 2008 Monthly Update, it is stated that
approximately 800,000 deaths each year can be attributed to outdoor air pollution, making pollution
the single most harmful environmental hazard to human health in urban areas (Kallman). The fact
that pollution kills hundreds of thousands of people each year alone portrays just how dangerous
living in these conditions can be. Kallman writes about a study which proves an increase in upper
respiratory diseases, cardiovascular mortality, respiratory mortality, and low birth weights when
exposed to air pollutants (August 2008: Monthly Update). These can be very serious diseases and
complications which, when contracted, can lead to death or very serious illnesses. There

Global financial crisis, increasing for a while, began to show its results in the mid of 2007 into

in even the richest nations have had to develop packages to assist their financial organizations.

A decrease in world GDP occurred in many countries, specifically in developing countries.
Imports have also declined significantly in importing countries. This was obvious in countries
such as China, Taiwan, Mexico, Egypt and Russia. it was stated that GDP fell to 3.8% in the
U.S. The impact of recession on employment may not be felt for some time. Investigation in
Britain shows that low skilled, low educated workers and the immature are in a weak position to
unemployment in a downturn. It took Britain five years for unemployment to go back to its
initial levels. From 2000 to 2003, the Federal Reserve lowered their target rates. They then
raised the funds rate significantly between July 2004 and July 2006. This added to an increase
in number of years to the adjustable rate mortgage rates and made it more expensive for
homeowners. As a result, this may have also contributed to the deflating of the housing bubble.
Gross Domestic Product declined at an in the last two years in the United States. When GDP
collapses, economic growth will also plunge. This is as a result of fewer goods being
manufactured and therefore the rate of exports will reduce. It is said that when exports decrease, it
will not have sufficient funds to accommodate any growth in the economy what so ever. As a
result in the decline in GDP, employment rate will sooner or later begin to drop. As a result of the
credit crunch, consumers have less purchasing power therefore

Consideration includes behavior involved in fostering effective relationships. Examples of such
behavior would include showing concern for a subordinate or acting in a supportive manner
towards others. Initiating structure involves the actions of the leader focused specifically on task

subordinates accountable to those standards.
Organizations are relying increasingly on teams to improve quality, efficiency, and adaptive change.
Cross functional teams are used to improve coordination among the different parties involved in
carrying out a joint project. Self managed teams are delegated most of the responsibility and

The Motifs In Joseph Conrad s Heart Of Darkness
While light and darkness are recurring motifs throughout Heart of Darkness, they do not merely
facilitate a simplistic, binary examination of core themes. Rather, Conrad utilises these motifs to
explore deeper meanings, cultivating a nuanced, multidimensional narrative in which interpretations
are rarely finite, but fluid and ongoing. Thus, by ostensibly focussing on light and darkness, Conrad
unveils the spectrum of meaning between these fixed opposites; employing absolute, black and
white imagery to reveal ambiguous greys. Such ambiguities manifest in Kurtz s ever evolving
characterisation. Throughout the narrative, Kurtz embodies light, darkness, and various spaces in

descriptions of Kurtz are counterbalanced with darker portrayals. Marlow discerns that Kurtz

Furthermore, Kurtz s devilish tendencies are overtly identified: The wilderness...had sealed Kurtz

Kurtz is not exclusively godlike (light) or devilish (dark), but a fluctuating amalgamation of the

Activist Movement In The Civil Rights Movement
An activist is a person who campaigns for some kind of social change. Being an activist means
being involved in a protest or a political or social cause. Many different activist groups exist
around the world, fighting for different beliefs and reasons. Protesting, or being an activist against
racial inequality has always existed in America. Activism for racial equality in America was widely
known with rights for African Americans after slavery but since then diversity has increased over
time. Not only is there still activism for racial equality among African Americans, but also for many
other races that have made America their home, that discrimination. Many things since the Civil
Rights Movement have also changed, like technology and the use of social media and how it
collaborates with activism. Activism is a big part of American History. One of the most known
activist movements in American history is the Civil Rights Movement. The movement was a non
violent protestagainst racial segregation and discrimination of African Americans. The Civil Rights
Movement began in 1954 and ended in 1968 and was led by Martin Luther King. The Civil Rights
Movement commenced with the liberation of slavery. The movement included peaceful protests
and speeches. It angered White people to think that African Americans deserved the same rights as
them because they wanted to be superior raceand thought of the Blacks as animals.

Ted Demme s Blow is a highly informative movie about America s war on drugs. Although
dramatized at times, the film depicts the war on drugs rather accurately and captures the true
essence of why America is fighting a war on drugs. Rather than generalizing the drug war to its
audience, the film individualizes it to help facilitate the understanding of topics such as drug
smuggling, mandatory minimum sentencing, and sting operations. The formation of an almost
personal connection with George Jung is crucial in the beginning of the film. Including Jung s

At the end of the movie, George Jung decided that after legally making his own money he
wanted to have one last drug job for some extra cash, little did he know that his old gang was
setting him up to be caught by the federal government. Although the movie does not show the
work done by the federal government to find out this information, it showed how easy it is for
the government to still access anything they want. In the world of drug cartels, wiretapping is
extremely important since law enforcement can directly listen into conversations and use it as
evidence against the drug offenders. In some cases, previous drug cartel members are turned
into informants so the government can set up a sting operation, which is what happened to
George Jung. Since the drug deal already went through and he was in possession of the cocaine,
there was nothing Jung could do to escape law enforcement. Operations like this can be very
risky nowadays since drug cartels are rather violent, but for the time Jung was in the drug
business it was perfect. Jung s crime itself also showed how strict sentencing had become for drug
offenders over the years. For simply conspiring to smuggle drugs, Jung received a 60 year prison
sentence. Although his sentence was extremely reduced for testifying against his old partner, the 60
year sentence is still very extreme for simply smuggling drugs into the United States. This shows
the harshness of the drug laws in the United States and how the country is trying to do everything
in their power to win the war on

The Importance of George Wilson in The Great Gatsby Essay
The Importance of George Wilson in The Great Gatsby
F. Scott Fitzgerald s The Great Gatsby is a superbly written and an intrinsically captivating novel
that deals with the decline of the American Dream and how vapid the upper class is. To illustrate
and capture the essence of these themes, Fitzgerald uses characters Gatsby, who epitomizes the
actual American Dream, and Daisy, who is based on the ideal girl. Yet, as these characters grasp
the topics Fitzgerald wants to convey, there is something inherently like missing from the story as a
whole. To fill this void, Fitzgerald utilizes minor characters as a means to move the plot along,
develop characters further, and build upon the themes present in the novel. One such ... Show more

The paradox here is that Tom is, in a sense, George himself as Tom s wife, Daisy, is in the process
of being taken away from him.
As seen with the aforementioned example, Wilson also plays a role that involves parallelism. His
situation parallels Tom s, as both have their wives being stolen. His situation parallels Gatsby s in
both their idealization of Myrtle and Daisy, respectively. Both of these patterns serve to emphasize
the character flaws in Tom and Gatsby and ultimately in the superficial lifestyle presented in the
novel.
While all previous cases of Wilson have been employed as a means of further developing
characters. Complementing this role, Wilson also plays a noteworthy part in plot development.
Following the death of Myrtle, who Daisy, in fact, killed, Wilson learns of Myrtle s affair.

The essay will explore the concepts of Habitus and how it can form a personal taste. In order to
discover if taste can be considered to be truly personal, it is important to first investigate on the
ideas of consumer culture and how meaning can be created. There are a number of theorists that
need to be pointed out when talking about this subject matter, such as; Slater, Bourdieu, Lury and
Miller. There will also be a slight touch on the key aspects of semiotics and semiology as this tool

However, people from the upper class will always stay where they are and will always be
located in the highest position of the hierarchy. Things usually start with the upper class and
trickle down to the common, lower classes in terms of movement and originality. This is the
reason why people from the working class, for instance chavs, tend to purchase products that are
a replica of the original products which initially belong to the upper class. Moving on, the theory
of conspicuous consumption which according to Bourdieu (1986:31) seeks distinction in the
crude display of ill mastered luxury, is nothing compared to the unique capacity of the pure gaze,
a quasi creative power which sets the aesthete apart from the common herd by a radical difference
which seems to be inscribed in persons . He explains that conspicuous consumption is when people
buy things not for themselves, but for others in the society in order to show it to them and what
they think of it. This is to express that they have the money and can afford to buy such items.
People want to look different through their appearance by the use of their luxury. It seems as if it
has become significant to people that their identity lies within the products that they can purchase.
This notion of using consumption to portray your identity within the class is also mentioned by
Lury (1996:80) when she claims that lifestyle is thus an instance of the tendency for groups of

Abortion And The Second Presidential Debate Essay
I have chosen to write about abortion and its role in the third presidential debate of 2016. To begin,
we need to understand abortion and how it is received in the United States before we try to
understand how the current candidates addressed abortion. Abortion has been a hot button topic in
the United States since Roe vs. Wade in 1973 when criminalizing abortionwas considered
unconstitutional under the Due Process clause of the 14th amendment. This trial created a
nationwide debate on not only the legalization of abortion but also the restrictions and regulations.
To best understand the topic, it is best we look at both sides of the issue. Pro Life or anti abortion
activists often argue that the fetus is a human immediately after fertilization, resulting in murder or
killing innocent human beings. Pro Choiceor Pro abortion activists often argue that regardless of the
status of the fetus, women should have the right to choose what to do with their bodies. According
to the National Abortion Federation on prochoice.org, abortion was common and openly used
around the time of the creation of the constitution. In the mid 1800 s abortion became illegal state
by state, the reasoning behind criminalization varied by state but it was believed there was a fear
the population would be primarily children of immigrants rather that Anglo Saxon women if
abortion remained legal. The third debate primarily focused on later term abortions. Typically
abortions are considered late term

Phoenix, Thomas got to come along too. Victor had no other choice but to accept the offer. And the
journey begins.
Victor and Thomas had never been off the reservation before. They experienced what it s really
like to be a Native American in the real world. On the bus ride there, two white men took their
seats and made rude comments about them being Native Americans. They received a lot of stares
and uncomfortable looks from people as well. The bus ride to Phoenix was hard for Victor because
he had to deal with Thomas talking the whole time. Victor especially didn t like it when Thomas

Design Of The Fourth Amendment
Design of the Fourth Amendment The Fourth Amendment was not designed to serve as a fixed
protection against government abuse. There is no amendment to the Bill of Rights whose contents
should be taken at the face value they were written for. Keeping any amendment in its historical
context would solidify the amendment as a defense for the historical incidents that occurred in late
eighteenth century, rather than a guarantee that law enforcement officers act accordingly in present
day. As times change and advances are made to technology, society identifies a need for changes
within amendments; specifically the Fourth. Based on the majority opinions of landmark cases by
the Supreme Court, we are able to predict where Fourth Amendment law is headed in connection
with new technologies. Law is the formal embodiment of rules that legislators, regulators, and
judges etch into statute books, administrative manuals, and judicial decisions. It is unavoidable and
desirable to see the law change as technology becomes increasingly sophisticated (Larkin 2013).
The invention of telecommunications systems in 1875, created a need for a law to protect the
integrity of conversations. Likewise, the invention of electronic devices such as car spotlights,
electronic listening devices, global positioning systems, and thermal imaging scanners brought
upon a validated reason for the public to be concerned. The concern raised was over the abuse of
these devices by the government in order to acquire

Chapter Notes On Holden s Life
1.Chapter 1 Quote: What I was really hanging around for, I was trying to feel some kind of a
good by. I mean I ve left schools and places I didn t even know I was leaving them. I hate that. I
don t care if it s a sad good by or a bad good by, but when I leave a place I like to know I m leaving
it. If you don t, you feel even worse (Salinger 4). 1.Chapter 1 Quote Explanation: 2.Chapter 2
Question: Holden understands that life is game and that one must play by the rules, but why
does he determine it not by winning or losing but by who he s playing with?2.Chapter 2
Question Explanation: When Holden is told by old Spencer that life is a game and that he must
play by the rules, Holden interprets it not by winning or losing, but by what team he is playing
on. Holden believes his life is hard because of the relationships he has with certain people. He
believes that if these people were not in his life, his life would be a whole lot easier and simple.
3.Chapter 3 Quote: Like hell it (red hunting hat) is. I took it off and looked at it. I sort of closed
one eye, like I was taking aim at it. This is a people shooting hat, I said. I shoot people in the hat
(Salinger 22).3.Chapter 3 Quote Explanation: This hat for Holden is something that makes him
different from others. It makes him his own independent person. This hat gives him uniqueness and
individuality. The hat also shows the conflict in the novel because he is self conscious of it when
he is wearing it

Nuclear Energy Is Energy Generated From The Fission Or...
Nuclear Energy Jason Venturini April 6, 2016 What is nuclear energy? Nuclear energy is
energy generated from the fission or fusion of enriched uranium. The power plants in which this
type of energy is made are called nuclear power plants, but have many variations in how this
energy is achieved. Almost all reactors use heat generated from the enriched uranium pellets to
bring water to a boil, and use steam powered generators to create power. In Canada, the type of
reactor used is called a Pressurized Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR), a method created by Canada
in the 1950 s. In the next sections the inner workings of the PHWR method will be examined
and its safety explained. How does PHWR work? As mentioned before, many nuclear reactors
use enriched uranium. PHWR, however, does not for cost reasons as enrichment facilities for
uranium are complicated, expensive and the PHWR method is much more efficient. It avoids
the usage of enriched uranium through heavy water as a coolant instead of light water. Canada
specific reactors, called CANDU (CANada Deuterium Uranium) reactors use 30 40% less fuel
than light water based reactors. With the benefits of using heavy water out of the way, the
complicated process of creating energy from small uranium pellets the size of half an AA battery
will be explained as simply as possible. The process starts with hundreds of pellets being incased
in metal, welded into small cylinders and inserted into a large tank called the calandria . Nuclear

  • 2. On Dumpster Diving Rhetorical Analysis Lars Eighner represents the thousands of homeless people that have simply fallen victim of financial struggles, holding strongly onto his respect for others, his community, and himself, despite the difficulties he faces. According to Eighner s website, he spent time at the University of Austin, Texas studying creative writing, which is clear through his writing techniques and narrative style. However after falling on hard times, Eighner ended up homeless. While homeless in the late 80 s Eighner composed the essay On Dumpster Diving. It need not take long for one to find his purpose in writing the essay. Dumpster diving and homelessnessare deeply connected to a notion of poor life choices, mental illness, and substance abuse. And while Eighner doesn t deny that many people he encounters are winos, Eighner s purpose is to represent dumpster diving, in sense, as an art; reclaiming homelessness as a modern form of self reliance. ... Anderson Dealing with the demonic should be seen as a truth encounter rather than a power encounter (Anderson, 2000, p. 258) this quote by Anderson, 2000, basically sums up his entire counseling theory in The Bondage Breaker. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another weakness to Anderson s theory is that he negates the reality of some physical ailments and instead attributes them to demonic forces. While this may be fact in some cases, this theory is farfetched in my personal opinion. Even Anderson s example of Dee and her bout with MS is questionable as he notes a few pages after describing her miraculous recovery after completing his steps that some cases of MS are degenerative and some display symptoms which come and go such as seemed the case with Dee (Anderson, 2000). This type of theory comes under scrutiny by people outside of the Christian faith and makes Christians look like quacks since we believe that some supernatural force, not scientifically proven, is responsible for physical ailments able to be treated by medicine. While I feel that many components go into diagnosing physical and mental ailments I am cautious about subscribing to a belief that could do a person more harm than good. As a skeptic of Anderson s theory I must consider stories I have heard of Christians refusing medical treatment because of a belief that God would treat their ailment and later suffering greatly because of this belief. I believe that God is all powerful and has the ability to cure disease, however, I also believe that God has allowed us to develop modern medicine to treat very real physical ailments and we should be careful not to negate ... • 4. Analysis of the Novel Ishmael by Daniel Quinn Essay Ishmael begins when the nameless narrator finds a newspaper ad that reads: Teacher seeks pupil. Must have an earnest desire to save the world. Apply in person (4). At first, he is angry, as it reminds him of the counterculture movement of the 1960s, which he participated in only to discover that there was no easy way to save the world. Nonetheless, he responds to the ad, and finds that the teacher is a gorilla. Behind the gorilla is a sign that reads With man gone, will there be hope for gorilla? (9). The gorilla, named Ishmael, can communicate telepathically. Communicating with him in this fashion, the narrator learns Ishmael s background in which the gorilla was stolen from the wild and displayed in a menagerie, then rescued by a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To hep understand how Takers pass along their story, Ishmael introduces a figure named Mother Culture, who he insists reinforces the story through every facet of Taker society. Takers assume that humans are the pinnacles of evolution, and that the world was made for man. This belief has led to catastrophic results, yet the Taker story allows man to blame to gods. They believe the gods wishes man to be in control, and so if man is fundamentally flawed, then the gods are responsible for engendering the situation. Ishmael refuses to accept this premise, saying that the only thing wrong with humans is that the story that they insist on enacting puts them at odds with the world. Ishmael and the narrator also work to establish some immutable laws of life and species that have allowed the world to survive for this long. They agree that a law of limited competition exists amongst all species on Earth, and only man has taken exception to that law. In short, this law suggests that any species may protect and look out for itself, but cannot wipe out another species. A natural food chain must persist. Ishmael next discusses the Genesis origin stories of Adam and Eve, and of Cain and Abel to explore the meaning of the Taker story, and how it historically worked against the Leaver civilizations. He claims that the Fall of Man story was actually developed by Leavers to explain why the Takers started ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

During the Industrial revolution innumerable deaths were caused by the outbreak of infectious diseases. Due to the lack of sanitation in Industrial Britain disease spread through towns and communities very quickly. With no enforceable building regulations and even basic sanitary facilities required, many of the poorest people were left vulnerable to these outbreaks. Buildings were often overcrowded with up to thirty people living in one building at one time. Other problems such as sewage leaks and pipe burst contributed to the spread of diseases. Polluted water and lack of bathing facilities added to poor general hygiene. According to Elizabeth Isola The first outbreak of cholera, which is often spread by water contaminated with faecal matter, was in Sunderland, England, in the fall of 1831. In the course of the outbreak, 52,000 died. From 1837 1838. Two major long term reforms, the Factory Act in 1833 and the Public Health act in 1848 lead to the reduction of the harsh brutality of child labour and better means of sanitation for the general population. The Ecstasy Of Saint Teresa Analysis Rooted within John Berger s observations on the consumption of visual culture, in his 1972 book, Ways of Seeing, is the statement that The relation between what we see and what we know is never settled . Within the texts first chapter, Berger endeavours to illustrate the unique nature of perception along with its vulnerability to influence. The author further comments on the loss of independent thinking regarding artwork, instead being replaced by a state of false mystification . The enigmatic nature of the Baroque piece, Girl with a Pearl Earring (c.1665), by Dutch artist Johaness Vermeer, proves to allow for unique interpretations that are free from the learnt assumptions often implemented by the elite art society. Bernini depicts the spiritual awakening of the Saint as she has a vision of an angel, who plunges a spear into her heart. The sculpture attempts replicate the sensation with the detailed facial expression of the Saint her eyes closed and mouth open which displays a moment of spiritual pain and pleasure as she is consumed by her love for God. The angle appears to wear a light cloth that wraps around his figure, whilst the mortal Saint wears a heavy cloth, denoting a sense of stability associated with earth. The tangible quality of the cloth further enhances the realism of her transcended state. The sculptures theatrical element is foregrounded by the placement of a small hidden window which shines daylight onto the dramatic event, illuminating the bronze shafts representing the golden rays of heaven above. Placed on the surrounding walls are theatre boxes which seat the patrons who witness the climatic event. Bernini s work contributed to the Counter Reformation propaganda, as it provided pictorial evidence of the divine power of Christ to encourage faith amongst people of all social standing. The composition of the chapel ensures that it s visitors experience the art which defies mundanity and thus inspires awe and faith. In the promotion of intended context, Berger asserts that reproduction of an artwork creates multiple meanings which defer with each spectator and their respective contexts. His assertion may imply a scenario in which the grandeur and gravity of the artwork is lost as it is perceived from a television screen in an ordinary living room or printed arbitrarily on a ... • 10. Importance Of Common Stock By John Locke When dealing with a common stock within a society, one would assume that taking from the commons would leave other people worse off than they were before. However, this is not the case according to John Locke. In the beginning of Locke s Second Treatise on Civil Government (1690), he acknowledges that all men are equal and independent, no one ought to harm another in his life liberty or possessions (В§ 6). This raises the question of whether taking from the commons harms another person s interest or not. According to Locke, the common stock is everything that God, as King David says (Psalm 115:16), has given the earth to the children of men (В§ 25). Locke argues that taking from the commons would not affect the other people in society negatively, but it would instead enhance the value of the commons themselves. Locke utilizes the abundancy of the commons and the theory that applying one s labor to an object taken from the commons raises the value of the common stock. The First Objection to the Thesis Locke s first argument is that the commons are so abundant that there is no need to worry about depleting resources. While discussing appropriation in the commons, Locke infers that no man s labour could subdue or appropriate all, nor could his enjoyment consume more than a small part (В§ 36). One man alone could not subdue all the objects in the commons, but what does this mean when everyone is appropriating? This raises an issue as resources in a society are never ... The country of Somalia is best understood by learning about the Horn of Africa, defining its common religion, and examining its rich traditions. Comprehending the history of the Horn of Africais important in order to understand its effect on Somali ethnic groups. Unlike most of African nations, Somalia is made up of single, homogeneous ethnic groups (Lewis). Somalia shares a uniform language, religion, and culture that leads to a common ancestor. In the mid 1800s, Somalia was broken down into several territories by Colonies. The French controlled the northern region (the area that is now Djibouti), the British colonized northern Somalia (creating a country called British Somaliland), Italians governed southern Somalia (creating Italian Somaliland), Ethiopia controlled the region of Ogaden, and Kenya controlled the northern border that contains Somalis (Lewis). • 15. A Brief Note On The Primary Function Of Exec Lab 2 CSNB324 Muath Abdullah SN091649 Answer Q1: Execv(): it is a prototype of exec family, v is added to indicate the type of argument which in this case specified as a vector (array of character pointers). The primary function of exec () system call is to execute a file or a program. This is done by creating a new process image from a regular, executable file. This file is either an interpreter script or an executable file object. It has the form execv(char *path, char *argv[], char *envp[]). The path argument is the pathname of a file that contains the new program to be executed. The argv array is a list of parameter strings, and the envp array is a list of environment variable strings and values that should be used when the process begins executing the new programs. When a process encounters the execve() system call, the next instruction it executes will be the one at the entry point of the new executable file. Execvp() The created child process does not have to run the same program as the parent process does. The exec type system calls allow a process to run any program files, which include a binary executable or a shell script. On this page, we only discuss one such system call: execvp(). The execvp() system call requires two arguments: 1. The first argument is a character string that contains the name of a file to be executed. 2. The second argument is a pointer to an array of character strings. More precisely, its type is char **, which is exactly identical to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Without Prussia pushing unification along, Germany as we know it today would not exist. The Germanic states would not have unified as they did and the resulting wars that came about never would have played out. World history, not just European history, would be far different without modern day Germany, and the state that led to its emergence; however, Prussiadid not unify Germany overnight. Prussia worked up to unification with a series of wars and interactions throughout their history. Prussia was formed as a result of a series of crusades sanctioned by Pope Gregory IX against the pagan inhabitants of the area. The group of knights that undertook the crusade formed the Teutonic Order. The Kingdom of Prussiawas officially erected in 1701 by the order. The area that the knights had originally inhabited to convert the indigenous peoples of the area was now an official political power. Prussia was located largely in the Northern hemisphere and was surrounded by Russia, Hungary, France, Belgium, and the Netherlands. It was one of the largest German states and held most of the power within the Germanic area, where it competed mostly with Austria for power. The Religious Freedom Restoration Act The Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) is a federal law that was set up to protect the free exercise of religion, as an undeniable right, protected by the First Amendment. Easy enough, right however, it seems can be interpreted in different ways, some depending on what your beliefs are i.e., religious or secular. Such as in the legal case of Burwell (U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services) vs. Hobby Lobby. Hobby Lobby argued that they should not have to pay for contraceptives for their employees as part of their healthcare because contraceptives such as the emergency contraception went against their religious beliefs because is an abortifacient. I went into this with an open mind as I really didn t follow the case at the time and really didn t know too much about it. I also did really know too much about what RFRA was from a legal point of view. To help me fully understand I found the syllabus from this case in which part of the first paragraph says: The Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 1993 (RFRA) prohibits the Government [from] substantially burden [ing] a person s exercise of religion even if the burden results from a rule of general applicability unless the Government demonstrates that application of the burden to the person (1) is in furtherance of a compelling government interest; and (2) is the least restrictive means of furthering that compelling government interest. You must include detailed critical discussion of at least two poems by Larkin in your response. In timed conditions Gemma N Larkin and Abse both write about places in a very different, very unique style. One the one hand Larkin talks about the places of his past and how they are no longer accessible; the changing of a beautiful, unspoilt place to something short of an eyesore; a pace he is in but does not feel he belongs and even places within his mind. Moreover, in the first stanza when describing the rural area he repeatedly uses assonance. Skies and scarecrows, haystacks, hares and pheasants these soft consonant sounds make you slow down as the repeated s sounds become hard to say, slowing you down and not allowing you to rush past these, in Larkin s case, beautiful little details of the countryside. Furthermore, Larkin s poem Mr Bleaney refers to a place that the persona does not wish to be in, yet has ended up having surrendering and suffers the consequences. Mr Bleaney is essentially a poem about a circumstantial situation that is given as a dramatic monologue, and rather like a drama, tells a story that is full of lucid mystery. The first half of the poem is slow and deliberate and helps to create a macabre feel to the poem. A change of pace occurs in the second half of the poem, though is not immediately apparent. It then seems to be despairingly urgent, as Mr Bleaney subtly moves from a recollected past to an observed present, through his mediation with the new tenant. In addition Larkin s use of listing creates a dull and monotonous feel to the place, giving the reader the feel that no one, unless in a dire situation, would want to suffer living in such an undesirable place. No one enjoys walking the streets of Birmingham only to taste or smell the smoke and particulates in the air, not to mention the damaging effects to one s health. Fortunately, improvements have been made; forty years ago, residents of Birmingham could not even see the skyline due to the immense amounts of particulates in the air, but now the skyline is visible on a daily basis. Although the movie does not show the work done by the federal government to find out this information, it showed how easy it is for the government to still access anything they want. In the world of drug cartels, wiretapping is extremely important since law enforcement can directly listen into conversations and use it as evidence against the drug offenders. In some cases, previous drug cartel members are turned into informants so the government can set up a sting operation, which is what happened to George Jung. Since the drug deal already went through and he was in possession of the cocaine, there was nothing Jung could do to escape law enforcement. Operations like this can be very risky nowadays since drug cartels are rather violent, but for the time Jung was in the drug business it was perfect. Jung s crime itself also showed how strict sentencing had become for drug offenders over the years. For simply conspiring to smuggle drugs, Jung received a 60 year prison sentence. Although his sentence was extremely reduced for testifying against his old partner, the 60 year sentence is still very extreme for simply smuggling drugs into the United States. Abortion has been a hot button topic in the United States since Roe vs. Wade in 1973 when criminalizing abortionwas considered unconstitutional under the Due Process clause of the 14th amendment. As times change and advances are made to technology, society identifies a need for changes within amendments; specifically the Fourth. Based on the majority opinions of landmark cases by the Supreme Court, we are able to predict where Fourth Amendment law is headed in connection with new technologies. Law is the formal embodiment of rules that legislators, regulators, and judges etch into statute books, administrative manuals, and judicial decisions. It is unavoidable and desirable to see the law change as technology becomes increasingly sophisticated (Larkin 2013). The invention of telecommunications systems in 1875, created a need for a law to protect the integrity of conversations. Likewise, the invention of electronic devices such as car spotlights, electronic listening devices, global positioning systems, and thermal imaging scanners brought upon a validated reason for the public to be concerned. The concern raised was over the abuse of these devices by the government in order to acquire ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 44. Nuclear Energy Is Energy Generated From The Fission Or... Nuclear Energy Jason Venturini April 6, 2016 What is nuclear energy? Nuclear energy is energy generated from the fission or fusion of enriched uranium. The power plants in which this type of energy is made are called nuclear power plants, but have many variations in how this energy is achieved. Almost all reactors use heat generated from the enriched uranium pellets to bring water to a boil, and use steam powered generators to create power. In Canada, the type of reactor used is called a Pressurized Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR), a method created by Canada in the 1950 s. In the next sections the inner workings of the PHWR method will be examined and its safety explained. How does PHWR work? As mentioned before, many nuclear reactors use enriched uranium. PHWR, however, does not for cost reasons as enrichment facilities for uranium are complicated, expensive and the PHWR method is much more efficient. It avoids the usage of enriched uranium through heavy water as a coolant instead of light water. Canada specific reactors, called CANDU (CANada Deuterium Uranium) reactors use 30 40% less fuel than light water based reactors. With the benefits of using heavy water out of the way, the complicated process of creating energy from small uranium pellets the size of half an AA battery will be explained as simply as possible. The process starts with hundreds of pellets being incased in metal, welded into small cylinders and inserted into a large tank called the calandria . Nuclear ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
