Deterrence And Rational Choice Theory
Throughout the world crime is happening every single day. Yes, some people may feel as if the
deterrence theory does not work. Due to the fact that crime still happens in the world. This essay
will look at the support for the theory. As well as the key problems for the theory. Next, it will
explain some of the newest directions in deterrence/rational choice theory. Finally, it will either
agree/disagree with someone s thought on deterrence and how it does not work and is a waste of
time to study. Deterrence and rational choice are two different things. Deterrence is used to punish
those who disobey and in return help deter others from committing the same crime. While rational
choice is when the individual thinks about the cost and the benefits of them committing this
crime (Cornish and Clarke, text CH 34). Deterrence and rational choice tend to work pretty well
on young adults. For example, if a teenager sees his friends face time in prison for committing an
act of violence. That may deter them from committing the same crime or something similar.
Reason is that they possibly think of the pros and cons of each situation and how the effect it
could have on family. Also where deterrence and rational choice work could not be define. Due to
the fact that judges interpret the law, and do not have a across the board rule and sentencing
guideline to help them make a decision. Deterrence and rational choice does have some problems.
One problem is that there is no way to tell if

Essay How to Tame a Wild Tongue
Natalie Gonzalez 3/14/2007 Gloria Anzaldua, author of the article How to tame a Wild Tongue ,
expresses very strong views on how she feels her native Chicano Spanish language needs to be
preserved in order to maintain cultural unity when used as a private form of communication. Her
statement, for a people who cannot identify with either standard (formal, Castilian) Spanish, nor
standard English, what recourse is left to them but to create their own language? suggests that
despite the societal pressures of needing to learn more formal and В‘properly accepted English and
Spanish, the very nature of the Chicano language is a unique creation of acceptance, through
language within the Mexican culture. She is opposed to assimilation on... Show more content on

The English language is universal. It has very set rules, forms and functions. The Chicano
language at best represents a personal story, a private communication that is not understandable
or even acceptable by non chicanos. By contrast, Richard Rodriquez, in his article entitled Aria ,
strongly believes in surrendering to learning the proper English language, despite how strongly
he feels his native tongue is a private language that once functioned to unite his family.
Rodriguez creates a division of a public and a private discourse. He feels that he has a В‘right to
learn the public language of los gringos . He creates a visual clash of two worlds: a public world
as represented by school and the need to learn English; and a private world as represented by his
family and the use of Spanish within the home. He feels that in order to adapt and create
assimilation that he needs to abandon the comfort of using Spanish to communicate and force
himself to learn English В– even if it meant alienating his family members. He does not believe as
Anzaluda does that you have to create your own language if you cannot identify with more formal
forms of acceptance. Although he admits it is heartbreaking to have shared fewer words with his
parents because of the language barrier, he thinks his choice in learning and practicing English was
necessary. In fact, the more he learned

The Pros And Cons Of Little Albert
The ideal of behaviorism is to eliminate coercion: to apply controls by changing the environment
in such a way as to reinforce the kind of behavior that benefits everyone. (B.F. Skinner).
Behaviorism is the study of behavior and how it can change when the patient is introduced to a
stimuli. Little Albert was an 8 month old orphan who was taken to be experimented on. He was
introduced to a small white fluffy mouse, and whenever he touched the mouse he would hear a loud
noise. Trained to not touch the mouse, he obtained an irrational fearof all things white and fluffy.
Although there were advantages and disadvantages, the study on Little Albert was an unethical
experiment, because Little Albert was taught to have an unnatural fear, he was only eight months
old when he was tested on, and he was taken away before his fear could be removed.
Little Albert s case wasn t all bad. The study on Little Albert gave a lot of insight on how to train
humans to behave certain ways. Through the conditioning, the animals and objects ... had become a
trigger of fear. (Monitor on Psychology 1) Watson was able to train Little Albert to fear all things
white and fluffy. This helps us understand the way to train humans to see things in the way we want
them to. Another advantage would be the fact that Watson believed that he could train infants to
excel in any field that he wanted them to. Give me a dozen healthy infants, ... train him to become

How Did Tesla Contribute To Modern Society
Nikola Tesla: Inventor Of Modern Society
When Nikola Tesla was born, electricity was a mere theory. There were no light bulbs, lamps,
computers, cell phones, or any form of harnessed energy. Nevertheless, young Tesla had a great
mind that could envision all sorts of possibilities for this force. He invented the alternating current,
induction motor, Tesla coil, as well as laying the foundation for radio, neon lighting, remote
control, radar, and even cell phones. So why don t we think of Tesla as the true inventor of modern
society? Because while Tesla s mind was great, his skills as a businessman were not. Although Tesla
was a poor businessman, his inventions were the driving force behind industrial modernization.
Born in 1856 in what is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A.K. Brown, from the Western Union, decided to invest in Tesla s AC theories. In a modest
laboratory not too far from Edison s offices, Tesla crafted the motors just as he imagined them.
He had finally been able to create the machine he had dreamed of for so long, but how would it
fare against Edison s generators? In late 1887, Tesla applied for seven patents affiliated with
polyphase AC motors and power transmission. His ideas were accepted and those inventions
proved to be some of the most valuable ever created. Soon after, a man by the name of George
Westinghouse caught wind of Tesla s incredible ideas. After meeting with Tesla, he purchased the
patents for $60,000 dollars, plus he agreed to pay $2.50 per horsepower of electrical capacity sold.
The advancements from Tesla s patents caused an industrial war to erupt. The future of electricityin
the U.S. was at stake, as well as whether Edison s DC or Westinghouse s AC would prevail as the
central form of energy. It was around this time that Edison began his rampage against alternating
current. He told anyone who

Taking a Look at Quorn
PROJECT IDEA
In our modern world one of our biggest problems is food, or rather a lack of food. To combat this
problem Quorn was developed in 1925. However Quorn only recently became easily accessible to
South Africans. What I aim to achieve with this project is to establish whether Mycoproteins are
the best way forward. WHAT IS MYCOPROTEIN
Mycoproteins are derived from the fungus Fusarium venenatum . This fungus is grown in a
fermentation vat filled with glucose syrup and minerals and vitamins. To maintain growth oxygen
is pumped in, carbon dioxide is removed and the vat is kept at a temperature between 350C to
420C. To form the all important protein, nitrogen is consistently added to the fungus. The result of
all this optimization is that the fungus can double its mass every five hours.
However even with this fast production rate the fungus must be dried to ~10% water, this was the
main cost in the production of other single cell proteins. Of the dry mass of the fungus
approximately 48% is protein with the remainder being fat, carbohydrates and cell wall. Currently
the best single cell protein production system is unibio s u loop technology which converts natural
gas into a highly concentrated, 71%, protein product. The mycoprotein used in Quorn was chosen
above the natural gas system because the hyphae in the fungus are similar in length and width to
genuine muscle fibres which gives the quorn a more realistic meaty texture.

Critical Discourse Analysis For An International Crisis...
Methodology
Critical discourse analysis
For an international crisis happening thousands miles away, it is not sufficient to be understood
without acknowledging itself as a mediated complex. From critical linguistics perspective,
Fowler (1991/2013) believes news is socially constructed. What events are reported is not a
reflection of intrinsic importance of those events, but reveals the operation of a complex and
artificial set of criteria for selection (p. 2). The news media select events for reporting according to
a complex set of criteria of newsworthiness; so news is not simply that which happens, but that
which can be regarded and presented as newsworthy (p.13).
Filtered by the latent criteria, the final representation of Hong Kong protests in Canadian press is
the outcome of social inclusion and exclusion. In Fowler s sense, representation is a constructive
practice. Hong Kong protests are not communicated neutrally in natural structure per se. Instead,
they were transmitted through the Canadian press with its own structural features permeated by
Canadian social values. The discourse of Hong Kong protests reflects the social actions
accomplished by language users when they communicate in social situations and within society and
culture at large (van Dijk, 1997, pp. 13 14).
So to speak, studying how the protests were represented requires not only analyzing texts or
processes of production and interpretation, but also analyzing the relationship between texts,

Kabuki Greek Culture
In 1603, the establishment of the Tokugawa shogunate allowed Japan to stay at peace until 1868
(Theatre histories 203). The return of peace allowed for a new culture to emerge that was the
opposite of samurai elegance and control; there was a new form of entertainment called Kabuki.
These types of performers reversed genderroles and mocked samurai rulers, which caused the
samurai, traders and workers in wealthy towns to disapprove of these performers. Even though they
were annoyed at these performances, it confirmed what they took to be their innate superiority to
the rowdy culture of the cities (203). The success of these performances can be explained by the
cultural hierarchy theory. The cultural hierarchy is the idea that cultures create a divide to depict
the ethical differences. There is a high status... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Viewers could see the divide between social classes in the performer s costume and makeup
because of how they were being used to get around the government regulations in place to censor
anything that undermined the political and social hegemony of the samurai. When Kabuki first
emerged, samurai, traders and workers in wealthy towns disapproved of these types of
performances, but Ieyasu and his warriors decided to allow them because of how they believed
the ban of these performances would only lead to more trouble. The Samurai and wealthy traders
and workers thought very poorly of the low class people like merchants, so they believed it was
better they were being distracted by entertainment because that way they are not turning to serious
crime. However, the Samurai rulers thought that these performances should be regulated, so
soldiers and young men of their class would not be corrupted by watching these

Research Paper On Luigi Pirandello
Many people are inspired by things that occur in their life or things they witness, which tends to
motivate them to do something or express an experience in someway. Luigi Pirandello always said
ВЁNature uses human imagination to lift her work of creation to even higher levelsВЁ ( Luigi
Pirandello Quotes ). Case in point, Luigi lived by this quote, incorporating nature and reality in his
works. He was an Italian dramatist, novelist, poet, and short storywriter whose greatest contributions
were his plays. Pirandello was mostly inspired by individual desires, physiological issues, and
struggles within communities/countries.

Living in Rome during his time, World War I outbroke. He wrote about the war in his novelcalled
War. The story is about worried parents that are distraught over their kids being deployed to war.
The parents soon learn in this story that there s no reason to be concerned because it s their
children s choice not theirs. Pirandello relates to this because as World War I was going on his son
Stefano was deployed. Another novel concerning events in a country or community was The Other
Son. This novel tells about a concerned Sicilian mother pining for her two sons who have
emigrated to Sante Fe. The mother s longing for her sons urges her to follow each group of
prospective emigrants walking away from their village, in hopes to find her sons. This deals with
community issues and the fact that people are emigrating in and out of the community. Pirandello
honored the heartbreaking events that could happen to someone or a community or country.

Property Law Servitudes
Dear Madam,
Praedial servitude limited real right
The servitude pertinent to this matter is a praedial servitude, relating to two pieces of land,
adjacent to each other. A paedial servitude is established over the servient property (The Trust) for
the benefit of the dominant property (UCT) in perpetuity. A right of way typically confers a real
right to benefit from the property of another. It affords powers of use and enjoyment to someone
other than the owner. Section 63(1) of the Deeds Registry Act tells us that limited real rights are
capable of registration. This particular right of way, in favour of UCT, is therefore enforceable
against the Trust as it appears to satisfy the requirements for a valid praedial servitude and ... Show

The relationship between the dominant and servient owners is governed by the principle of
reasonableness. Where there is a conflict of interests, the interests of the dominant owner will have
precedence over those of the servient owner, subject to the principle of reasonableness. The Holder
of the servitude must exercise the servitude civiliter modo, that is, in a civilized and considerate
way. This does not mean that the dominant owner is restricted in exercising the servitudal rights
merely because to do so would detrimentally affect the servient owner. It follows however that the
holder of the servitude may not increase the burden on the servient property beyond the express or
implied terms of the servitude.
One must therefore examine the rights and obligations that arise from the servitude, as governed
by the aforementioned principle of reasonableness, paying attention to the factors responsible for
the footpath s state of disrepair. In the light of this second contributory factor, should the Trust
approach a court for a declaration of rights, arguing that UCT has failed abide by the principle of
civiliter modo, such a court has the power to enforce specific duties by way of an interdict.

Hypocrisy, By Arthur Miller
These people had no ritual for the washing away of sins. It is another trait we inherited from
them, and it has helped to discipline us as well as to breed hypocrisy among us. (19) These
words, which were written by Arthur Miller in 1953, in the description of John Proctor, have
given us the explanation of the hypocrisy we have today and will remain within us for a long,
perpetual time ahead. Hypocrisy is just one of various universal theme that Miller had
endeavored to illustrate while he was writing this story of notorious Salem witch trial in
Massachusetts, in the year of 1692. Obviously, Miller did not write the Crucible merely to
produce a reminiscence of a wrongful event in the past, but rather he desired to share with people
what he had experienced during the time of composing this script. As we wish to analyze the
specific point Miller is making about hypocrisy, we need to recognize the relationship between the
time and event of Miller s life around the year of 1953, when he wrote the Crucible. For a brief
biography about Arthur Miller, he was born in 1915 and passed away in 2005. Miller had lived
through the destructive years of World War I and World War II, which strengthen the existence of
communism in Europe and Asia. To preclude the expansion of communism in the country, United
States had established the House Un American Activities Committee, which acted like the Salem
court, offering the opportunity for confession and the grace of redemption (xii). A

Capulet Responsible For The Deaths Of Romeo And Juliet

Hypothetical Screening
Think of hypothetical screening programs for diseases of interest to you; find one example of a
disease where high sensitivity would be more important, and one example where high specificity
would be more important. Screening programs utilize diagnostic tests on individuals who are
asymptomatic of certain diseases and the intent of diagnostic tests are used to establish the
probability of having a certain disease (New York State, Department of Health (n.d.). As a
provider, the fundamental intention of screenings is to reduce morbidity and mortality; however,
providers must also understand the potential affect on individuals if results reveal false positives
and false negatives (Gates, 2001). Therefore, diagnostic accuracy is critical and making sure
quality of screenings is important in that the tests are sensitive enough to detect disease during the
period in individual who do not have symptoms of a particular disease and specific enough to
lessen the incidence of false positives (Gates, 2014). Screening the female population with Pap
(Papanicolaou) smears for cervical cancer is considered a sensitive test (Lalkhen McCluskey, 2008).

Therefore, it is the period of time between early diagnosis with screening and the time in which
diagnosis would have been made without screening (Gates, 2001). Thus, lead time is an important
factor when evaluating the effectiveness of screening programs. According to Gates (2001),
advancing the time of diagnosis solely does not validate screenings because those diagnosed early
are not living longer per se compared to those individuals that are not screened. Therefore, the best
way to avoid lead time bias is to compare actual mortality rates in the screened and unscreened
populations through randomized trials (Gates, 2001; Gordis,

Spirited Away Essay
Give 110% this quote is usually uttered to athletes who are struggling to find motivation or to
push through a workout. It is pretty obviously a hyperbole. We usually over emphasize what we
want our children to learn. It seems that Miyazaki followed this pattern in his film Spirited
Away, specifically in his character Chihiro. In the story Chihiro gives 110%. She is always
humble and willing to do anything with very little personal gain involved. Chihiro is a very
idealistic representation of how to be selfless, which is not possible to apply to real life. Modern
culture has a strong opinion on being selfish versus being selfless. People who display the

Look to a child for an answer. Chihiro embodies this sense of complete trust and outpouring of
oneself. Specifically represented by her willingness to go to Zeniba s house on the small chance
that she has a possibility to save Haku s life. This choice sounds like it is relatively small and
should be an easy accomplishment, but requires going on a train that runs one way and a long
journey away. There is a chance she will not make it back to her parents and go home. Now she
does have some personal gain due to her love for Haku, but the risk of never returning home
displays how selfless she can be. Chihiro is willing to throw away chances of going home on the
slight change that she can save her friend. She does not stop there, she brings along the monster,
No face, who was terrorizing the bath house. She not only does something for little gain, but
changes others for the better in the process. By bringing No face, she is bettering the world for
everyone when she could have easily left him there to continue to cause problems. The only issue
is the way she is portrayed is not entirely accurate to how real life

Item 3 Journal Article
Juana C, The interplay between Incoterms and the CISG (2013) 32(1), Journal of Law Commerce 58
This article demonstrates that the CISG and Incoterms to some extent mutually supplement and
support each other in terms of passing of risk. Where the regulation provided by Incoterms is
inadequate, rules in CISG can supplement the Incoterm rules and vice versa. And these two
instructions both adopt the delivery principle. Therefore, in order to undertake a research about
the allocation of risk in my dissertation, it is better to combine CISG rules and trade terms in
Incoterms 2010. In addition, by comparing CISG and Incoterms 2010, I could have the
knowledge of similarity on the risk rules that is both connecting the passing of risk to the transfer
of physical possession, or at least being placed in the position of having control over the goods.
This article also expounded some differences regarding risk allocation. For instance, the Incoterm
rules revised the CISG s rules on delivery

Semantic And Semantics
1.1. Statement of the problem.
English is the language commonly used in the world. In the trend of globalization today, the
importance of English can t be denied and ignored because it is widely used everywhere in the

Taking An Abnormal Psychology Class
Taking an abnormal psychology class is not part of my requirements for my degree, but with my
wanting to work with children and their families, I feel that this course was beneficial for me to
take. I also enjoy learning about how the human mind works, the different disorders, and ways to
help people that may be suffering from the many disorders that we covered. As I have mentioned
throughout the semester, I or someone I know has or is suffering from many of the disorders we
have discussed. I personally have struggled with addiction and bulimia in my past, and I feel that
learning more in depth can assist me in my future if I have a student that also struggles with
similar disorders. My father suffers from schizophrenia, although he attempts to block his
disorder out and refuses medication. This can be extremely hard for both me and my child to
visit him because he is different. I try to remember that the disorder is not his fault and I also try
to remind my daughter that he is her grandfather and she should accept him, but it is a struggle
for both of us. I feel that learning a little more on schizophrenia was helpful for me and I plan on
doing a little more research on my own time to also help me to cope with his differentness .
There was such a variety of topics covered in this course and I wish that I had taken it in a
classroom instead of online. With this online course, I feel like the material went a little too
quickly. If I were in a classroom setting, I feel that

For every thing their is always a symbol resembling it. For example on the house on mango

Another example would be the summer from The Flowers by Alice Walker . In the story there was

Homophobia In Canada
As time has progressed, Canadian society has adapted an increasingly liberal attitude towards
controversial subjects. Such changes have thereby prompted an evident surge of positive perceptual
changes within the nation. Various prominent social advancements in Canadian history consist of
the recognition of coloured individuals, multiple movements for gender equality and the
acknowledgement of the rights of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender population, also
known as the LGBT community. Throughout history, gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender
individuals have been heavily discriminated against based upon their sexual preferences. Many
individuals perceive homosexualityto be abnormal and immoral due to the fact that it violates the...

Homophobia is the concept in which people are hateful or fearful towards lesbians and gays
(Dictionary.com, 2014). Fear and revulsion of the LGBT population commonly emanate from
religious concepts or traditional ideas of society. In 2011, 18% of hate crimes based upon sexual
orientation were reported, however, the number proved to be higher than expected due to the fact
that many more individuals are reporting these crimes to the authorities (Northhumberland View,
2013). This further demonstrates the progression of LGBT rights in Canadian society due to the
fact that lesbian, gay and transgender individuals alike feel comfortable enough to report these
matters to the police and receive justice rather than allowing the issue to go unnoticed out of fear of
being judged. Also, though many laws have been implemented to prevent discrimination, it is a
reality in which many members of the LGBT community still face today. In terms of bullying, 25%
of homosexual adolescents reported being physically harassed by heterosexual peers in 2009 (CBC,
2010). However, in 2002 approximately one third of homosexual students were harassed based upon
their sexuality (Riese, 2014). Although discrimination and bullying based upon sexual orientation
is prevalent in today s society, Canadians have become more accustomed to the idea of
homosexuality which is reflected through the decrease in the amount of harassment that occurs.
However, with adequate education and continuous learning about the matter, discrimination based
upon sexuality can be virtually eliminated in the

aged whiskey. Also, aged coffee is not that exceptional, and it does not deserve the credit. Here is

The History
Coffee was introduced to Europe in the mid 1500 s, it was referred to as aged coffee. During that
period, Mocha which is now Yemen was the primary supplier of coffee in Europe. Importing coffee
from Yemen to Europe takes a long journey through the sea around the southern region of Africa.

The Belief behind Aged Coffee
It is only some particular types of coffee that age well, and they need to be aged under some
specified conditions or else they will lose their oils and affect the coffee taste and flavor. This can
make the coffee taste sour or bitter.
According to some specialists, they claimed that the coffee does not get better with the long aging

The Theory, Ego Psychology, And Attachment Theory
Drive Theory, Ego Psychology, Object Relations, Self Psychology, and Attachment Theory are
different vistas from which we can observe and study human development. I have decided to
explain mine from the perspective of Attachment Theory, whose main contributors include John
Bowlby, Mary Ainsworth, and Mary Main. However, before doing so, it would be useful to outline
a bony framework and define certain key concepts of Attachment Theory, which focuses on the
relationships and bonds between people particularly long term ones such as child parent and
husband wife.
Bowlby believed that the needs for attachments are built into our biology, and because humans
experience the longest period of immaturity of all animal species, we might infer that they are not
hardwired to have inflexible personalities, nor can they survive independently of parents. Humans
are gregarious creatures who cannot exist in vacuums, and their early ineptitude and dependence
apparently make them mutually dependent beings.
Attachment also affords a type of reciprocity between parent and child, because both benefit from
their relationship to each other. The child benefits by receiving affective care form the parent and
the parent benefits by experiencing a sense of value for caring for the child. If a child has a secure
attachment pattern, it will more readily accept the caregiver s advice and instructions since he or
she trust the caregiver. Bowlby believed that the earliest bonds formed by children with

into manageable pieces so that Shawna could feel successful and empowered to continue moving

felt more manageable, and her anxiety decreased with each goal that was accomplished. I asked

trust to empower Shawna to lead, while I provided support.
Crisis Intervention Plan

A democracy is a system of government controlled by the people, not by one certain group or

leads to the concept that all citizens should have the same rights, responsibilities, and influence in
the governing of their country. In writing the Declaration of Independence Thomas Jefferson was
trying to break his ties with the harsh and non democratic rule of the British and begin a new, equal

nation, which could govern itself. To do this, though, it was necessary to write some sort of

would be built. This document was the Declaration of Independence. Jefferson felt that Britain was
doing nothing but hurting America with unfair rules and all sorts of ridiculous taxes. The colonies

The Declaration of Independence was a formal document stating that the people of America were
breaking away from Britain and that the American colonies were now Free and Independent States.
The Declaration of Independence was the cornerstone of American freedom and equality. By
writing this document, the American Colonies could now begin the process of starting a new way

the concept of equality was more limited than it is today. Certainly, all members of colonial
America did not share equal status. However the concepts of the Declaration of Independence have

Terms Wisdom and Knowledge are often used interchangeably within our society without second

wisdom when really wealth is meant to symbolize the degree of spirituality one conducts

Prayer In Public Schools
Prayer in school has always been a very controversial issue. In 1963, the Supreme Court case of
The Abington School District v. Schempp was broadcasted for the nation, opening up the issue
with public schools requiring prayer as part of their education. The case told of The Abington
Country School District requiring elementary children to read 10 verses of the Holy Bible each
morning in school. The problem with the school requiring such a task is that not all the students
were Catholic. One parent in particular, Ellery Schempp, was very much against this practice in the
public school. He made the executive decision to take the Abington School District to court in
hopes to allow children to find their own form of religion. In the end, the case... Show more content

Studying The Bible in Public Schools Can Help US Students Win the Future, the author, Nyasha
Junior, makes a point that having the Bible in public schools can help to increase this vital
cultural literacy, public schools should teach courses in biblical literature (Junior, Nyasha). But
how can allowing just one book in a public school make such a difference? Furthermore, public
schools main priority is to educate students about basic courses such as math, reading, science,
and writing. It is not a priority for a public school to teach subjects such as ...biblical literature.
Also, in the same article as above Nyasha Junior states teaching biblical texts can contribute
toward making the US more competitive in the global marketplace. We need to educate students
who can read critically and make coherent arguments (Junior, Nyasha). To sum up the quote from
above, teachers are saying that the Bible will help to make public school education better by
encouraging competitiveness and making valid arguments. However, what are teachers
teaching now that is not helping public school students become competitive ? There has to be
more than one resource available for students to learn these valuable skills. Lastly, many people

the media that public schools need to incorporate prayer because public schools have become

from our schools, he said in a television interview. Should we be surprised that schools would

Japanese Imperialism in Korea and Korea s Police/Military Era As I stood on a mountain pass,

advocate policies and legislation favorable to workers in the United States and Canada, and take an
active role in Democratic party politics. The AFL CIO is especially concerned with global trade

Labor Education Programs in the United States
In the US, labor education programs such as the Harvard Trade Union Program created in 1942

important contemporary workplace and labor law issues of the day. The Harvard Trade Union

Labor unions use the term jurisdiction to refer to their claims to represent workers who perform a

A Brief History of Religion in Englad
Before the Reformation, England was a Roman Catholic society that was led by the Pope in
Rome. Religious life followed a very traditional and structured way of life and was very much
deeply embedded in the whole social and mental fabric of the country (Russell, 1996, p. 262).
Roman Catholic s were a very visual and ritual based religion and their churches were extremely
lavish in design and contained highly decorated furnishings inside (Wolffe, 2008).
England s dissent from the Catholic Church began with King Henry VIII (1491 1547). After
Catherine of Aragon failed to produce a male heir, Henry demanded a divorce from her. The Pope
denied Henrys request which led to Henry dissolving all ties with the Roman Catholic Church and
changed the direction of religion in England. Henrys VIII motives for change were for personal
gain rather than changing religious beliefs (Christianity in Britain, 2011). A law was passed in
1534 allowing Henry VIII to declare himself the head of the new Church of England, this move
allowed Henry VIII to divorce Catherine and marry Anne Boleyn the second of six wives (Steele
MacDonald, 2007).
Edward VI (1537 1553), Henry s son, who was only 9 when made king, was raised as Protestant.
Under Edwards VI reign (1547 1553) his uncle Edward Seymour, Duke of Somerset who was a
devout Protestant, was made guardian and ruled in Edwards place. Somerset together with

increasing organizational effectiveness, and finally (4) what needs to happen to change the

The Important Road Ahead: Optimizing Value and Performance
Understanding the motivating basis of a behavior makes it easier to deal with that behavior and
improve performance. Motivation and Employee Involvement are two of the most researched and
often, challenging aspects experienced by organizations and leaders today. Many leaders remain,
despite clear majority of research, ill equipped to motivate their employees or lack understanding of
link between them. Furthermore, studies indicate that the understanding of the importance of
employee involvement by employer is essential to managers because this is a significant predictor
of work behavior among employees (e.g. Manojlovich, Laschinger, Heather, 2002). Thus, to create
responsiveness for operational excellence, the employees representing the organization must be
valued. Creating this balance, it is essential that business designs encompasses offer support and
training for leaders/employees to work well together and appreciate the efforts of each member.

value to a pharmacist as this indication was not yet known. If yesterday s pharmacists didn t
continue to keep up with ever changing treatment options for specific medications, a pharmacist
wouldn t be able offer drug expertise to patients. As the wealth of knowledge that exists and
continues to grow is exceptional, pharmacists will have to constantly stay up to date with the latest

Essay on Alcohol Advertising
Alcohol Advertising
Exposure to alcohol advertising is an everyday occurrence. Alcohol advertising is persuasive not
only to adults but to those who are too young to buy alcohol legally. Although parents and peers
have a large impact on youth decisions to drink, marketing also has a significant impact by
influencing the attitudes of parents and peers and helping to create an environment that promotes
underage drinking. Alcohol companies focus billions of dollars on advertising their products and
still claim that the effect is minimal. I pose a few questions that are; who are the targets of alcohol
advertising? How does alcohol advertising affect the people targeted by alcohol companies? Finally
what actions are being taken to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Recognizing this important marketing fact, alcohol companies deliberately devise ads designed
to appeal to heavy drinkers. The heavy user of alcohol is usually an addict. Another interesting
perspective on the industry s claim that it only advertises to encourage moderate drinking to
those of age, is that if this were true, and only the 105 million drinkers of legal age in the US
consumed the official maximum moderate amount of alcohol, .99 ounces or roughly two drinks, a
day the industry would suffer a 40 percent decrease in the sale of beer, wine, and distilled spirits.
Meaning that if alcohol companies truly only targeted who they claim they do, they would only
be nearly cutting their profits in half. Besides the heavy drinkers, the young audience plays a
great deal to the alcohol industry. It is no wonder alcohol is appealing to the youth when ads only
display very healthy, attractive, and youthful looking people. Advertising is a powerful educating
force in American Culture, one that promotes attitudes and values as well as products. Ads are
now even featuring characters with special appeal to children. The makers of some 200 consumer
products including stuffed animals, dolls, T shirts, posters, and mugs are dedicated to alcohol.
Advertisements have even gone as far as popular children s movies; one example of this was the
very popular Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie. The average age which people begin

A Comprehensive Analysis Of Online Gambling Essay
The cheap and accessible Internet combined with the growing confidence of consumers in online
commerce has enabled the increasing popularity of interactive gambling which is defined as online
and remote wagering and gaming through interactive media devices (Gainsbury, Russell, Hing,
Wood, Lubman Blacszczynski, 2015). In fact, despite its relatively new history, the industry has
significantly grown in the last few years, accounting for approximately 10% in the worldwide
gamblingindustry and been expected to steadily flourish in the foreseeable future (Global Betting
and Gaming Consultants, 2011). However, the rapid growth of interactive gambling outpacing the
laws and the complex nature of the Internet has given rise to a great number of concerns around the
negative aspects that it can bring to the economy and society (Gainsbury, 2012). A thorough and
critical understanding of these disadvantages is crucial, especially in a country, whereas people are
highly involved in gambling and increasingly participate in online gamblinglike Australia
(Gainsbury, 2012). Thus, this report aims to provide a comprehensive analysis into the
unfavourable aspects of online gambling in Australia and suggest solutions towards them. To
achieve this, the report has three main objectives:
1.Provide a general and informative background about the online gambling in Australia
2.Analyse the negative impacts of online gambling on the economy and society
3.Discuss a set of recommendations to

The Use of Coal as an Energy Source in the United States...
Energy from Coal: The Nation s Dirty Secret
Abstract
While technology has led the world into such an advanced setting with intelligent machinery and
automated devices, coal has remained a loyal contributor of the energy needed by these various
types of equipment to function properly. Almost half of the electricity in the United States is
produced in coal plants where coal is burnt to produce this energy [1]. Both beneficial and
detrimental factors come with this alternative source of energy, known by the world for centuries.
Background Information
Even with the quantity of fossil fuels dwindling due to human consumption, coal has remained one
of the cheapest, reliable sources of electricity, natural gas, diesel fuel, and steel ... Show more

But there are also many detrimental factors as well, since the production of coal results in air
pollution, sulfur dioxide emission, carbon dioxide emission, acid rain, and hazardous waste [4].
These environmental problems are due to both the mining of coal and coal production plants.
Many issues arise with the mining of coal. Firstly, the safety of miners is put at risk as they
descend hundreds of feet below the surface of the Earth. After many years in this field of work,
many miners develop black lung because of inhaling the coal extensively. Secondly, the extraction
of coal is very costly due to the machinery needed along with the transportation of the coal after it
has been mined to the various factories that are able to extract the sulfur impurities in coal and burn
the coal for energy [5]. New methods have been developed to help with some of the issues relating
to coal production. To rid the surrounding environment of toxic pollution, emission scrubbing
technology has been installed into coal plants. This is approximately 90% to 95% affective in
eliminating the mercury, sulfur, and nitrogen emissions [6]. As for the deep mining issues, there is
another method to retrieve coal from the Earth, removing the entire mountain tops covering a
reserve of coal beneath. Although this

The Fall of the Ideal American in American Pastoral Essay
It is not so much that Philip Roth disagrees with the concept of the American dream; he simply
does not wish to buy into the myth of it all. In American Pastoral Roth laments the loss of
innocence, as exemplified by both Seymour Levov, the protagonist, and Nathan Zuckerman, the
narrator. Both grew up in an idyllic Jewish Newark neighborhood, both being the sons of Jewish
parents. The separation of their commonality came at a young age, when Zuckerman began to
idolize the golden boy of the neighborhood Seymour Swede Levov, born blond haired and blue
eyed, and representing everything that a young, Jewish boy would want in a local hero. It is
through the narrator s eyes that we see both the rise and fall of a Jewish family in America,... Show

Seymour eventually moved his family out of the city and into Old Rimrock, where all of
America lay at their door (310). It was the realization of the American Pastoral concept, one
which gave Seymour the feeling of accomplishment and success, the typical archetype of the
American dream. Unfortunately, the peace that was on the surface would boil over in due time.
Merry Levov, Seymour s daughter, would be the cause. She was described as an all A student,
setting very high standards for herself (171) and continuing on in the striving tradition of her
family. It is hard to pinpoint the exact moment of her loss of innocence, but eventually Merry
would be accused of becoming a leftist radical, of bombing Old Rimrock s general store, and of
murdering Dr. Fred Conlon. The Swede s dream was now interrupted by both the politics of the age,
but also the violent acts of his daughter. He lamented, wondering why Merry had become the
angriest kid in America (279) and most likely wondering how his actions had potentially led to it.
The Grandfather may have alluded to the changing zeitgeist of American society, albeit with the
change in his business. He points out that the assassination of John F. Kennedy and the arrival of
the miniskirt ... was the death knell for the ladies dress glove (349). More importantly, the
disillusionment of that generation, living through the Vietnam War, would bring about the extreme

Sherwood Anderson Winesburg Ohio

Depression and Seclusion in Sherwood Anderson?s Winesburg, Ohio
Seclusion is the state of being private and away from other people. It can be caused by many
things including judgement of others, or can be self inflicted. It can many times result in depression
and in some cases personality disorders, breakdowns, and such. Sherwood Anderson, who spent
much of his childhood in the small town of Clyde, Ohio, was inspired by his own trials with
depression and seclusion, to write about his distorted view of life in a small American town. A
great grouping of these stories is Winesburg, Ohio. In each of the stories included in Winesburg,
Ohio, Anderson highlights a specific character and their personal struggles with isolation, and its
effects ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Reefy devotes his entire life to this theory, and throughout the book, many hints are given to how
important truth is in people?s lives. As Irving Howe puts it, ?Anderson simply persuades us that to
this lonely old man (Dr. Reefy) they (truths) are utterly precious and thereby incommunicable,
forming a kind of blurred moral signature.?25 Dreams, another theme often presented in these
stories, fills the lives of the characters. They dream what their lives could be like if they were
normal, they dream about past memories, their dreams envelop them and sometimes keep them
from reaching their potential because they hang on to them. However, it is also shown that these
dreams allow some of the characters to have happy ending, and achieve their desires for life. ?What
turned these characters into grotesques is for instance unfulfilled dreams, being misunderstood by
others, or the tension between the human drive for lust and

When people think of French gastronomy wine is an essential component of her culture. While it
remains a one of many licit joys the French indulge in, this gluttony is an important image and
offering to tourist. Although parts of France greatly rely on the production and manufacturing of
wine more than the actual consumption, they still rather enjoy their wine. Oenology in itself is a
very interesting study and takes the appreciation of the drink to a whole new level. French wine is
much like the French themselves its well dressed, elegant, never overpowering, and well behaved.
Even on the topic of Oenology the variety and quality that France provides is incredible. Two well
known regions, RhГґne and Bordeaux, produce the some famous wine names such as CГґtes du
RhГґne and ChГўteau d Yquem. The CГґtes du RhГґne is more earthy and tends to be described as
rustic while ChГўteau d Yquem is a sweeter or dry wine, and also holds the record for most
expensive wine bought at 117,000$. Avoiding great detail it s easy to say that the difference
starts in the soil that makes the grapes. In a way the wine can be seen as a model for modern
production and food by promoting quality and variety, in other words, an optimistic point of view
for French food. France is always advancing in food and wine production therefore it is a fair
assumption that they will continue to grow together.

Theodicy And Suffering
Many of us question why we live in a universe full of sin and evil? We question if our god is
good why is our natural world filled with suffering, violence and destruction? This is where the
theodicy problem comes into play, Theodicy is an attempt to explain why a good god would have
created evil and suffering. Atheists don t believe in Godfor this matter, since evilexists they assume
God must not. I believe that we were all blessed with the ability to choose and we can still make
our own choices. What God did was he created mankind with free will, it can t be logical for a man
to remain sin free when they are making their own choices. So we can make our choices moral,
immoral, or amoral. Immoral acts result in evil, if God intervened it... Show more content on

I had to search this question because I am too wondering why good people suffer and why bad
people don t seem to. I came across an article and it basically explained that our Lord clearly
taught that his blessings should fall upon all people regardless of the evil they commit. And it
later explained that we often only witness and know of the good that happen to bad people rather
than the entire situation. We don t entirely know what the person has been dealt with. For
example, I sometimes question those who don t have money problems. I always thought to
myself they are so blessed to not have money issues and there life is probably less stressful and
they don t know what its like to struggle. What we would give right? Well I started to notice that
most people with money were miserable. They had problems in other departments such as
commitment, relationships and family. We aren t all blessed with the same things. God s
blessings apply to all people. So we need to stop questioning why bad things happen to good
people? God has a plan and Instead of questioning God s fairness or justice, we are called to trust
in His love and ultimate justice. Those who are persecuted or reviled for their faith in God in this
life are considered blessed (Matthew 5:11 12) yet the reward in eternity will be great. (CT) We are
all blessed to live through our Lord Jesus Christ, and his eternity far outweighs any situation that is

The Supreme Court Case Of Buck Vs. Bell
Buck vs. Bell The Supreme Court case of Buck v. Bell in 1997 is a lawsuit in which the U.S.
Supreme Court upheld a Virginia law that offered the eugenic sterilization for individuals regarded
genetically unfit. The Supreme Court s decision to uphold Virginia s statute regarding sterilization
provided the basis for enactment of similar laws across the United States and subsequent
sterilization of 65,000 Americans without their approval or that of their family members. Notably,
the ruling of this case was based on the concept of feeblemindedness, which is no longer applicable
in medical terminology. Actually, this case primarily involved state enforced eugenic sterilization
for individuals considered feebleminded or genetically substandard in certain ways. The case
provides considerable insights concerning eugenicsand enforced sterilization in the United States
and significant concerns on whether genetics should be used for any king of legal decision.
Case Summary As previously mentioned, the Supreme Court case of Buck vs. Bell in 1927 was a
lawsuit that entailed state enforced eugenic sterilization for individuals regarded feebleminded or
somehow genetically substandard. Carrie Buck, the plaintiff, together with her mother had been
devoted to the Virginia Colony of Epileptics and Feeble Minded in Virginia (Eugenics Archive,
n.d.). The two were judged to be genetically inferior or feebleminded and immoral since they had
children out of wedlock. Moreover, Carrie Buck s child

Period Of Susceptibility In Kittens
1.The period of susceptibility, as defined in the present study, is a critical period in which vision is
developed. The researchers discovered that the period of susceptibility in kittens has a sudden onset
at the beginning of the fourth week of life. A gradual decline in the period of susceptibility is seen
sometime between the sixth and eighth weeks of life and continues through the end of the third
month of life. By the end of the third month and the beginning of the fourth month, the period of
susceptibility disappears.
2.Figure 2 consists of two histograms (Figure 2A and Figure 2B) depicting the ocular dominance
distribution of cells in the left visual cortex of two kittens born of the same litter. In this part of the
study, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Figure 9 contains two ocular dominance histograms of the left visual cortexes (9A and 9B) in
which two kittens had a period of monocular deprivation in their right eyes during the first three
to four months of their lives. In Figure 9A, both eyes were kept open for thirty months and then
the results were recorded, which shows ocular dominance in the left eye (expected based on the
research). However, in Figure 9B, following the original period of deprivation in the right eye,
the kitten s left eye was then sutured closed for a complete year, after which remained open with
the right eye for four years and ten months. The results of this cat were recorded at age six years
and one month. One may expect the results in Figure 9B to show ocular dominance in the right
eye due to the fact that the left eye was closed for a longer period of time (roughly 8 months).
However, the results instead show ocular dominance in the left eye like Figure 9A does. This can
be explained based off of the research that the period of susceptibility ends around the fourth
month of life. Because the right eye was deprived during the period of susceptibility, but the left
eye deprivation occurred after the conclusion of this sensitive period of cell growth and connection
formation, the left eye displayed dominance. This again suggests that the length of deprivation does
not necessarily matter as long as it does not occur during the period of

How Did Nancy Reagan Changed America
Nancy Reagan once said, I am a big believer that eventually everything comes back to you. You
get back what you give out. As the former First Lady of the U.S. from 1981 to 1989, Nancy
Reagan was a model First Lady who helped and inspired many. She is known for her undying
love for her husband, Ronald Reagan and her role to protect him. She founded the Just Say No
drug awareness campaign which educated people on drug abuse. Even though many people saw
her in a negative way, she changed America greatly. My life really began when I met my husband,
said Nancy. As the wife of Ronald Reagan, Nancy encouraged Ronald, especially during his
campaigns. In the campaign of 1980, Ronald Reagan had already been the Governor of California
but now he was running for president. Ronald... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Nancy created an Anti Drug campaign. Then a little girl asked her a question and the name, Just
Say No was created. The Just Say No drug campaign championed drug abuse awareness and
education. In this campaign, Nancy traveled across the U.S. saying speeches on drug abuse
awareness and education. In 1984 alone, Nancy made 110 appearances and 14 anti drug
speeches. The campaign reversed her negative image from before. Then in 1985, Nancy held a
two day First Ladies conference. Eighteen wives of world leaders came and discussed drug abuse
awareness all around the world. On October 27, 1986, President Reagan signed the anti drug
abuse law. The National Crusade for a Drug Free America was a personal win for Nancy. She
wanted to stop the use of drugs! By 1988, more than 12,000 Just Say No clubs had been created all

Passenger Pigeon Research Paper
At one time the Passenger Pigeon made up 40% of the bird population in America. When they
migrated their flock stretched 300 miles, and covered the sky for hours. How did 5 billion birds
disappear within 30 years? Yes, it is because we hunted the whole population.
The passenger pigeon was an average bird with a big population. This bird served as the cheapest
source of protein while hunters successfully killed the entire species. These birds never attached
or harmed others in any way shape, or form. We killed them in the sky, with nets and bullets, we
also invaded their nesting and mating sites. We killed 5 billion in 32 years date to today. Passenger
pigeons were hunted for their meat which was sold cheaply by the ton.

In this case we would use cloning to bring back this bird. Here is a diagram of how we would do
this:
As we can imagine this is a very tricky procedure and also isn t every actuate. Main implications
that would be results of using this method is that once you spoil a Passenger Pigeons nucleolus
cell it can not be reverted. This means that we are lowing the change of bringing this bird back
because we wouldn t have DNA evidence.
Although this is bad there are worse things. If this works and we release the Passenger Pigeon, it
will have a huge negative effect because it wouldn t have any predators. As things change
carnivores change their hunting styles technique and in this case food source. Reintroducing this
new food source would have a huge negative impact because the carnivores could get sick from
eating meat that they haven t had before. Also the first Passenger Pigeon wouldn t know what to
eat because they wouldn t have experience that was passed down from their parents. This pigeon
wouldn t be able to teach its young either. Passenger Pigeons could negatively impact other bird
habitats. If pigeons take over nesting sits, they could wipe out other birds in the area. There are
many negative environmental implications if we release the Passenger

Cosmic Perspective Summary
In his article The Cosmic Perspective , Neil DeGrasse Tyson introduces us to the idea of the
cosmic perspective. This concept puts all humanity in their place, for we are not the center of
the universe. Tyson accomplishes this by stating that the issues that seem so big to us are
nothing when you see them with the cosmic perspective. He also talks about how the earth is so
small that it s like a speck of dust compared to the universe. He goes on to say that without the
cosmic perspective we wouldn t even be the people we are today! With all this talk about the
universe and how big it is, the connection to the reader gets lost. However, Tyson brings it back
down to earth by stating the following, A single breathful draws in more... Show more content on

Among all the facts that the cosmic perspective is vital to humanity there is some sentiment too.
Tyson introduces the atomic structure of everything in the universe. The basic building blocks
of life. These are carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, and nitrogen. All of these natural elements are found
in the human body as well as in the stars of the universe. We are thus a part of the stars and the
stars are a part of us. This brings up a feeling of importance to the reader. Throughout the article
readers feel the weight of the world coming in at them. In this short paragraph Tyson reminds
them that they are a part of the universe and have a place in life. One thing that is prevalent to the
reader is the idea that the cosmic perspective is more than seeing the universe. One must take
into account that applying the perspective is as important as knowing what the perspective
entails. There is a particularly powerful section of this article that states exactly how the cosmic
perspective is vital to living in today s world. Ideas that the cosmic perspective teaches how to
see the beauty of the world, be open to new things, act selflessly, and reach beyond our everyday
needs assists humanity in living the best life for themselves. Tyson invites his audience to consider
the ideas that the cosmic perspective brings. We must push forward with these newly found ideas
and create a better world for ourselves and the generations to follow.

  • 2. Deterrence And Rational Choice Theory Throughout the world crime is happening every single day. Yes, some people may feel as if the deterrence theory does not work. Due to the fact that crime still happens in the world. This essay will look at the support for the theory. As well as the key problems for the theory. Next, it will explain some of the newest directions in deterrence/rational choice theory. Finally, it will either agree/disagree with someone s thought on deterrence and how it does not work and is a waste of time to study. Deterrence and rational choice are two different things. Deterrence is used to punish those who disobey and in return help deter others from committing the same crime. While rational choice is when the individual thinks about the cost and the benefits of them committing this crime (Cornish and Clarke, text CH 34). Deterrence and rational choice tend to work pretty well on young adults. For example, if a teenager sees his friends face time in prison for committing an act of violence. That may deter them from committing the same crime or something similar. Reason is that they possibly think of the pros and cons of each situation and how the effect it could have on family. Also where deterrence and rational choice work could not be define. Due to the fact that judges interpret the law, and do not have a across the board rule and sentencing guideline to help them make a decision. Deterrence and rational choice does have some problems. One problem is that there is no way to tell if ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Essay How to Tame a Wild Tongue Natalie Gonzalez 3/14/2007 Gloria Anzaldua, author of the article How to tame a Wild Tongue , expresses very strong views on how she feels her native Chicano Spanish language needs to be preserved in order to maintain cultural unity when used as a private form of communication. Her statement, for a people who cannot identify with either standard (formal, Castilian) Spanish, nor standard English, what recourse is left to them but to create their own language? suggests that despite the societal pressures of needing to learn more formal and В‘properly accepted English and Spanish, the very nature of the Chicano language is a unique creation of acceptance, through language within the Mexican culture. She is opposed to assimilation on... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The English language is universal. It has very set rules, forms and functions. The Chicano language at best represents a personal story, a private communication that is not understandable or even acceptable by non chicanos. By contrast, Richard Rodriquez, in his article entitled Aria , strongly believes in surrendering to learning the proper English language, despite how strongly he feels his native tongue is a private language that once functioned to unite his family. Rodriguez creates a division of a public and a private discourse. He feels that he has a В‘right to learn the public language of los gringos . He creates a visual clash of two worlds: a public world as represented by school and the need to learn English; and a private world as represented by his family and the use of Spanish within the home. He feels that in order to adapt and create assimilation that he needs to abandon the comfort of using Spanish to communicate and force himself to learn English В– even if it meant alienating his family members. He does not believe as Anzaluda does that you have to create your own language if you cannot identify with more formal forms of acceptance. Although he admits it is heartbreaking to have shared fewer words with his parents because of the language barrier, he thinks his choice in learning and practicing English was necessary. In fact, the more he learned ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Pros And Cons Of Little Albert The ideal of behaviorism is to eliminate coercion: to apply controls by changing the environment in such a way as to reinforce the kind of behavior that benefits everyone. (B.F. Skinner). Behaviorism is the study of behavior and how it can change when the patient is introduced to a stimuli. Little Albert was an 8 month old orphan who was taken to be experimented on. He was introduced to a small white fluffy mouse, and whenever he touched the mouse he would hear a loud noise. Trained to not touch the mouse, he obtained an irrational fearof all things white and fluffy. Although there were advantages and disadvantages, the study on Little Albert was an unethical experiment, because Little Albert was taught to have an unnatural fear, he was only eight months old when he was tested on, and he was taken away before his fear could be removed. Little Albert s case wasn t all bad. The study on Little Albert gave a lot of insight on how to train humans to behave certain ways. Through the conditioning, the animals and objects ... had become a trigger of fear. (Monitor on Psychology 1) Watson was able to train Little Albert to fear all things white and fluffy. This helps us understand the way to train humans to see things in the way we want them to. Another advantage would be the fact that Watson believed that he could train infants to excel in any field that he wanted them to. • 5. How Did Tesla Contribute To Modern Society Nikola Tesla: Inventor Of Modern Society When Nikola Tesla was born, electricity was a mere theory. There were no light bulbs, lamps, computers, cell phones, or any form of harnessed energy. Nevertheless, young Tesla had a great mind that could envision all sorts of possibilities for this force. He invented the alternating current, induction motor, Tesla coil, as well as laying the foundation for radio, neon lighting, remote control, radar, and even cell phones. So why don t we think of Tesla as the true inventor of modern society? Because while Tesla s mind was great, his skills as a businessman were not. Although Tesla was a poor businessman, his inventions were the driving force behind industrial modernization. Born in 1856 in what is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A.K. Brown, from the Western Union, decided to invest in Tesla s AC theories. In a modest laboratory not too far from Edison s offices, Tesla crafted the motors just as he imagined them. He had finally been able to create the machine he had dreamed of for so long, but how would it fare against Edison s generators? In late 1887, Tesla applied for seven patents affiliated with polyphase AC motors and power transmission. His ideas were accepted and those inventions proved to be some of the most valuable ever created. Soon after, a man by the name of George Westinghouse caught wind of Tesla s incredible ideas. After meeting with Tesla, he purchased the patents for $60,000 dollars, plus he agreed to pay $2.50 per horsepower of electrical capacity sold. The advancements from Tesla s patents caused an industrial war to erupt. The future of electricityin the U.S. was at stake, as well as whether Edison s DC or Westinghouse s AC would prevail as the central form of energy. • 6. Taking a Look at Quorn PROJECT IDEA In our modern world one of our biggest problems is food, or rather a lack of food. To combat this problem Quorn was developed in 1925. However Quorn only recently became easily accessible to South Africans. What I aim to achieve with this project is to establish whether Mycoproteins are the best way forward. WHAT IS MYCOPROTEIN Mycoproteins are derived from the fungus Fusarium venenatum . This fungus is grown in a fermentation vat filled with glucose syrup and minerals and vitamins. To maintain growth oxygen is pumped in, carbon dioxide is removed and the vat is kept at a temperature between 350C to 420C. To form the all important protein, nitrogen is consistently added to the fungus. The result of all this optimization is that the fungus can double its mass every five hours. However even with this fast production rate the fungus must be dried to ~10% water, this was the main cost in the production of other single cell proteins. Of the dry mass of the fungus approximately 48% is protein with the remainder being fat, carbohydrates and cell wall. Currently the best single cell protein production system is unibio s u loop technology which converts natural gas into a highly concentrated, 71%, protein product. The mycoprotein used in Quorn was chosen above the natural gas system because the hyphae in the fungus are similar in length and width to genuine muscle fibres which gives the quorn a more realistic meaty texture. • 7. Critical Discourse Analysis For An International Crisis... Methodology Critical discourse analysis For an international crisis happening thousands miles away, it is not sufficient to be understood without acknowledging itself as a mediated complex. From critical linguistics perspective, Fowler (1991/2013) believes news is socially constructed. What events are reported is not a reflection of intrinsic importance of those events, but reveals the operation of a complex and artificial set of criteria for selection (p. 2). The news media select events for reporting according to a complex set of criteria of newsworthiness; so news is not simply that which happens, but that which can be regarded and presented as newsworthy (p.13). Filtered by the latent criteria, the final representation of Hong Kong protests in Canadian press is the outcome of social inclusion and exclusion. In Fowler s sense, representation is a constructive practice. Hong Kong protests are not communicated neutrally in natural structure per se. Instead, they were transmitted through the Canadian press with its own structural features permeated by Canadian social values. The discourse of Hong Kong protests reflects the social actions accomplished by language users when they communicate in social situations and within society and culture at large (van Dijk, 1997, pp. 13 14). So to speak, studying how the protests were represented requires not only analyzing texts or processes of production and interpretation, but also analyzing the relationship between texts, ... • 8. Kabuki Greek Culture In 1603, the establishment of the Tokugawa shogunate allowed Japan to stay at peace until 1868 (Theatre histories 203). The return of peace allowed for a new culture to emerge that was the opposite of samurai elegance and control; there was a new form of entertainment called Kabuki. These types of performers reversed genderroles and mocked samurai rulers, which caused the samurai, traders and workers in wealthy towns to disapprove of these performers. Even though they were annoyed at these performances, it confirmed what they took to be their innate superiority to the rowdy culture of the cities (203). The success of these performances can be explained by the cultural hierarchy theory. The cultural hierarchy is the idea that cultures create a divide to depict the ethical differences. When Kabuki first emerged, samurai, traders and workers in wealthy towns disapproved of these types of performances, but Ieyasu and his warriors decided to allow them because of how they believed the ban of these performances would only lead to more trouble. The Samurai and wealthy traders and workers thought very poorly of the low class people like merchants, so they believed it was better they were being distracted by entertainment because that way they are not turning to serious crime. Pirandello relates to this because as World War I was going on his son Stefano was deployed. Another novel concerning events in a country or community was The Other Son. This novel tells about a concerned Sicilian mother pining for her two sons who have emigrated to Sante Fe. The mother s longing for her sons urges her to follow each group of prospective emigrants walking away from their village, in hopes to find her sons. This deals with community issues and the fact that people are emigrating in and out of the community. • 10. Property Law Servitudes Dear Madam, Praedial servitude limited real right The servitude pertinent to this matter is a praedial servitude, relating to two pieces of land, adjacent to each other. A paedial servitude is established over the servient property (The Trust) for the benefit of the dominant property (UCT) in perpetuity. A right of way typically confers a real right to benefit from the property of another. It affords powers of use and enjoyment to someone other than the owner. Section 63(1) of the Deeds Registry Act tells us that limited real rights are capable of registration. This particular right of way, in favour of UCT, is therefore enforceable against the Trust as it appears to satisfy the requirements for a valid praedial servitude and ... Where there is a conflict of interests, the interests of the dominant owner will have precedence over those of the servient owner, subject to the principle of reasonableness. This does not mean that the dominant owner is restricted in exercising the servitudal rights merely because to do so would detrimentally affect the servient owner. It follows however that the holder of the servitude may not increase the burden on the servient property beyond the express or implied terms of the servitude. One must therefore examine the rights and obligations that arise from the servitude, as governed by the aforementioned principle of reasonableness, paying attention to the factors responsible for the footpath s state of disrepair. In the light of this second contributory factor, should the Trust approach a court for a declaration of rights, arguing that UCT has failed abide by the principle of civiliter modo, such a court has the power to enforce specific duties by way of an interdict. ii. • 11. Hypocrisy, By Arthur Miller These people had no ritual for the washing away of sins. It is another trait we inherited from them, and it has helped to discipline us as well as to breed hypocrisy among us. (19) These words, which were written by Arthur Miller in 1953, in the description of John Proctor, have given us the explanation of the hypocrisy we have today and will remain within us for a long, perpetual time ahead. Hypocrisy is just one of various universal theme that Miller had endeavored to illustrate while he was writing this story of notorious Salem witch trial in Massachusetts, in the year of 1692. Obviously, Miller did not write the Crucible merely to produce a reminiscence of a wrongful event in the past, but rather he desired to share with people what he had experienced during the time of composing this script. As we wish to analyze the specific point Miller is making about hypocrisy, we need to recognize the relationship between the time and event of Miller s life around the year of 1953, when he wrote the Crucible. For a brief biography about Arthur Miller, he was born in 1915 and passed away in 2005. Miller had lived through the destructive years of World War I and World War II, which strengthen the existence of communism in Europe and Asia. To preclude the expansion of communism in the country, United States had established the House Un American Activities Committee, which acted like the Salem court, offering the opportunity for confession and the grace of redemption (xii). • 14. Hypothetical Screening Think of hypothetical screening programs for diseases of interest to you; find one example of a disease where high sensitivity would be more important, and one example where high specificity would be more important. Screening programs utilize diagnostic tests on individuals who are asymptomatic of certain diseases and the intent of diagnostic tests are used to establish the probability of having a certain disease (New York State, Department of Health (n.d.). As a provider, the fundamental intention of screenings is to reduce morbidity and mortality; however, providers must also understand the potential affect on individuals if results reveal false positives and false negatives (Gates, 2001). Therefore, diagnostic accuracy is critical and making sure quality of screenings is important in that the tests are sensitive enough to detect disease during the period in individual who do not have symptoms of a particular disease and specific enough to lessen the incidence of false positives (Gates, 2014). Therefore, the best way to avoid lead time bias is to compare actual mortality rates in the screened and unscreened populations through randomized trials (Gates, 2001; Gordis, ... We usually over emphasize what we want our children to learn. It seems that Miyazaki followed this pattern in his film Spirited Away, specifically in his character Chihiro. In the story Chihiro gives 110%. She is always humble and willing to do anything with very little personal gain involved. Chihiro is a very idealistic representation of how to be selfless, which is not possible to apply to real life. Modern culture has a strong opinion on being selfish versus being selfless. Where the regulation provided by Incoterms is inadequate, rules in CISG can supplement the Incoterm rules and vice versa. And these two instructions both adopt the delivery principle. Therefore, in order to undertake a research about the allocation of risk in my dissertation, it is better to combine CISG rules and trade terms in Incoterms 2010. In addition, by comparing CISG and Incoterms 2010, I could have the knowledge of similarity on the risk rules that is both connecting the passing of risk to the transfer of physical possession, or at least being placed in the position of having control over the goods. I also enjoy learning about how the human mind works, the different disorders, and ways to help people that may be suffering from the many disorders that we covered. As I have mentioned throughout the semester, I or someone I know has or is suffering from many of the disorders we have discussed. I personally have struggled with addiction and bulimia in my past, and I feel that learning more in depth can assist me in my future if I have a student that also struggles with similar disorders. My father suffers from schizophrenia, although he attempts to block his disorder out and refuses medication. This can be extremely hard for both me and my child to visit him because he is different. I try to remember that the disorder is not his fault and I also try to remind my daughter that he is her grandfather and she should accept him, but it is a struggle for both of us. I feel that learning a little more on schizophrenia was helpful for me and I plan on doing a little more research on my own time to also help me to cope with his differentness . Homophobia is the concept in which people are hateful or fearful towards lesbians and gays (Dictionary.com, 2014). Fear and revulsion of the LGBT population commonly emanate from religious concepts or traditional ideas of society. In 2011, 18% of hate crimes based upon sexual orientation were reported, however, the number proved to be higher than expected due to the fact that many more individuals are reporting these crimes to the authorities (Northhumberland View, 2013). This further demonstrates the progression of LGBT rights in Canadian society due to the fact that lesbian, gay and transgender individuals alike feel comfortable enough to report these matters to the police and receive justice rather than allowing the issue to go unnoticed out of fear of being judged. Also, though many laws have been implemented to prevent discrimination, it is a reality in which many members of the LGBT community still face today. In terms of bullying, 25% of homosexual adolescents reported being physically harassed by heterosexual peers in 2009 (CBC, 2010). However, in 2002 approximately one third of homosexual students were harassed based upon their sexuality (Riese, 2014). The Theory, Ego Psychology, And Attachment Theory Drive Theory, Ego Psychology, Object Relations, Self Psychology, and Attachment Theory are different vistas from which we can observe and study human development. I have decided to explain mine from the perspective of Attachment Theory, whose main contributors include John Bowlby, Mary Ainsworth, and Mary Main. However, before doing so, it would be useful to outline a bony framework and define certain key concepts of Attachment Theory, which focuses on the relationships and bonds between people particularly long term ones such as child parent and husband wife. Bowlby believed that the needs for attachments are built into our biology, and because humans experience the longest period of immaturity of all animal species, we might infer that they are not hardwired to have inflexible personalities, nor can they survive independently of parents. Humans are gregarious creatures who cannot exist in vacuums, and their early ineptitude and dependence apparently make them mutually dependent beings. Attachment also affords a type of reciprocity between parent and child, because both benefit from their relationship to each other. The child benefits by receiving affective care form the parent and the parent benefits by experiencing a sense of value for caring for the child. If a child has a secure attachment pattern, it will more readily accept the caregiver s advice and instructions since he or she trust the caregiver. • 36. A Brief History of Religion in Englad Before the Reformation, England was a Roman Catholic society that was led by the Pope in Rome. Religious life followed a very traditional and structured way of life and was very much deeply embedded in the whole social and mental fabric of the country (Russell, 1996, p. 262). Roman Catholic s were a very visual and ritual based religion and their churches were extremely lavish in design and contained highly decorated furnishings inside (Wolffe, 2008). England s dissent from the Catholic Church began with King Henry VIII (1491 1547). After Catherine of Aragon failed to produce a male heir, Henry demanded a divorce from her. The Pope denied Henrys request which led to Henry dissolving all ties with the Roman Catholic Church and changed the direction of religion in England. Henrys VIII motives for change were for personal gain rather than changing religious beliefs (Christianity in Britain, 2011). A law was passed in 1534 allowing Henry VIII to declare himself the head of the new Church of England, this move allowed Henry VIII to divorce Catherine and marry Anne Boleyn the second of six wives (Steele MacDonald, 2007). Edward VI (1537 1553), Henry s son, who was only 9 when made king, was raised as Protestant. Under Edwards VI reign (1547 1553) his uncle Edward Seymour, Duke of Somerset who was a devout Protestant, was made guardian and ruled in Edwards place. The Important Road Ahead: Optimizing Value and Performance Understanding the motivating basis of a behavior makes it easier to deal with that behavior and improve performance. Motivation and Employee Involvement are two of the most researched and often, challenging aspects experienced by organizations and leaders today. Many leaders remain, despite clear majority of research, ill equipped to motivate their employees or lack understanding of link between them. Furthermore, studies indicate that the understanding of the importance of employee involvement by employer is essential to managers because this is a significant predictor of work behavior among employees (e.g. Manojlovich, Laschinger, Heather, 2002). Thus, to create responsiveness for operational excellence, the employees representing the organization must be valued. Creating this balance, it is essential that business designs encompasses offer support and training for leaders/employees to work well together and appreciate the efforts of each member. ... Alcohol advertising is persuasive not only to adults but to those who are too young to buy alcohol legally. Although parents and peers have a large impact on youth decisions to drink, marketing also has a significant impact by influencing the attitudes of parents and peers and helping to create an environment that promotes underage drinking. Alcohol companies focus billions of dollars on advertising their products and still claim that the effect is minimal. I pose a few questions that are; who are the targets of alcohol advertising? How does alcohol advertising affect the people targeted by alcohol companies? Finally what actions are being taken to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Recognizing this important marketing fact, alcohol companies deliberately devise ads designed to appeal to heavy drinkers. The heavy user of alcohol is usually an addict. Another interesting perspective on the industry s claim that it only advertises to encourage moderate drinking to those of age, is that if this were true, and only the 105 million drinkers of legal age in the US consumed the official maximum moderate amount of alcohol, .99 ounces or roughly two drinks, a day the industry would suffer a 40 percent decrease in the sale of beer, wine, and distilled spirits. Meaning that if alcohol companies truly only targeted who they claim they do, they would only be nearly cutting their profits in half. Besides the heavy drinkers, the young audience plays a great deal to the alcohol industry. It is no wonder alcohol is appealing to the youth when ads only display very healthy, attractive, and youthful looking people. Advertising is a powerful educating force in American Culture, one that promotes attitudes and values as well as products. Ads are now even featuring characters with special appeal to children. The makers of some 200 consumer products including stuffed animals, dolls, T shirts, posters, and mugs are dedicated to alcohol. A Comprehensive Analysis Of Online Gambling Essay The cheap and accessible Internet combined with the growing confidence of consumers in online commerce has enabled the increasing popularity of interactive gambling which is defined as online and remote wagering and gaming through interactive media devices (Gainsbury, Russell, Hing, Wood, Lubman Blacszczynski, 2015). In fact, despite its relatively new history, the industry has significantly grown in the last few years, accounting for approximately 10% in the worldwide gamblingindustry and been expected to steadily flourish in the foreseeable future (Global Betting and Gaming Consultants, 2011). However, the rapid growth of interactive gambling outpacing the laws and the complex nature of the Internet has given rise to a great number of concerns around the negative aspects that it can bring to the economy and society (Gainsbury, 2012). A thorough and critical understanding of these disadvantages is crucial, especially in a country, whereas people are highly involved in gambling and increasingly participate in online gamblinglike Australia (Gainsbury, 2012). Energy from Coal: The Nation s Dirty Secret Abstract While technology has led the world into such an advanced setting with intelligent machinery and automated devices, coal has remained a loyal contributor of the energy needed by these various types of equipment to function properly. Almost half of the electricity in the United States is produced in coal plants where coal is burnt to produce this energy [1]. Background Information Even with the quantity of fossil fuels dwindling due to human consumption, coal has remained one of the cheapest, reliable sources of electricity, natural gas, diesel fuel, and steel ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But there are also many detrimental factors as well, since the production of coal results in air pollution, sulfur dioxide emission, carbon dioxide emission, acid rain, and hazardous waste [4]. These environmental problems are due to both the mining of coal and coal production plants. Many issues arise with the mining of coal. Firstly, the safety of miners is put at risk as they descend hundreds of feet below the surface of the Earth. After many years in this field of work, many miners develop black lung because of inhaling the coal extensively. Secondly, the extraction of coal is very costly due to the machinery needed along with the transportation of the coal after it has been mined to the various factories that are able to extract the sulfur impurities in coal and burn the coal for energy [5]. New methods have been developed to help with some of the issues relating to coal production. To rid the surrounding environment of toxic pollution, emission scrubbing technology has been installed into coal plants. This is approximately 90% to 95% affective in eliminating the mercury, sulfur, and nitrogen emissions [6]. As for the deep mining issues, there is another method to retrieve coal from the Earth, removing the entire mountain tops covering a reserve of coal beneath. Although this ... The Fall of the Ideal American in American Pastoral Essay It is not so much that Philip Roth disagrees with the concept of the American dream; he simply does not wish to buy into the myth of it all. In American Pastoral Roth laments the loss of innocence, as exemplified by both Seymour Levov, the protagonist, and Nathan Zuckerman, the narrator. Both grew up in an idyllic Jewish Newark neighborhood, both being the sons of Jewish parents. The separation of their commonality came at a young age, when Zuckerman began to idolize the golden boy of the neighborhood Seymour Swede Levov, born blond haired and blue eyed, and representing everything that a young, Jewish boy would want in a local hero. Seymour eventually moved his family out of the city and into Old Rimrock, where all of America lay at their door (310). It was the realization of the American Pastoral concept, one which gave Seymour the feeling of accomplishment and success, the typical archetype of the American dream. Unfortunately, the peace that was on the surface would boil over in due time. Merry Levov, Seymour s daughter, would be the cause. She was described as an all A student, setting very high standards for herself (171) and continuing on in the striving tradition of her family. It is hard to pinpoint the exact moment of her loss of innocence, but eventually Merry would be accused of becoming a leftist radical, of bombing Old Rimrock s general store, and of murdering Dr. Fred Conlon. The Swede s dream was now interrupted by both the politics of the age, but also the violent acts of his daughter. He lamented, wondering why Merry had become the angriest kid in America (279) and most likely wondering how his actions had potentially led to it. For example, I sometimes question those who don t have money problems. The Supreme Court s decision to uphold Virginia s statute regarding sterilization provided the basis for enactment of similar laws across the United States and subsequent sterilization of 65,000 Americans without their approval or that of their family members. Notably, the ruling of this case was based on the concept of feeblemindedness, which is no longer applicable in medical terminology. Actually, this case primarily involved state enforced eugenic sterilization for individuals considered feebleminded or genetically substandard in certain ways. The case provides considerable insights concerning eugenicsand enforced sterilization in the United States and significant concerns on whether genetics should be used for any king of legal decision. Figure 9 contains two ocular dominance histograms of the left visual cortexes (9A and 9B) in which two kittens had a period of monocular deprivation in their right eyes during the first three to four months of their lives. In Figure 9A, both eyes were kept open for thirty months and then the results were recorded, which shows ocular dominance in the left eye (expected based on the research). However, in Figure 9B, following the original period of deprivation in the right eye, the kitten s left eye was then sutured closed for a complete year, after which remained open with the right eye for four years and ten months. The results of this cat were recorded at age six years and one month. One may expect the results in Figure 9B to show ocular dominance in the right eye due to the fact that the left eye was closed for a longer period of time (roughly 8 months). However, the results instead show ocular dominance in the left eye like Figure 9A does. This can be explained based off of the research that the period of susceptibility ends around the fourth month of life. Because the right eye was deprived during the period of susceptibility, but the left eye deprivation occurred after the conclusion of this sensitive period of cell growth and connection formation, the left eye displayed dominance. This again suggests that the length of deprivation does not necessarily matter as long as it does not occur during the period of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
