The district has a one-to-one iPad initiative where each student and teacher is assigned an iPad. The revolution has arrived. Mobile devices are in our classrooms, but after technical issues have been resolved, how do you actually use devices as a teaching resource? Hear how schools are using devices in the classroom to improve learning and increase student engagement.

As mobile devices continue to proliferate throughout society, the question of how higher education might take advantage of these devices for use in teaching and learning remains unclear. While many institutions now have ‘bring your own device’ (BYOD) policies, others have mandated access to mobile devices at the program or institutional level.
The purpose of this session is present the case of how our department of forestry went about implementing a tablet initiative. The tablet was a required device for both faculty and students entering the program in September 2014 with the intended goals of reducing textbook purchase costs for students, mirroring industry standard practices in mobile device usage and enabling collaborative and active learning in the classroom.
In the session we will share what we have learned thus far in supporting the initiative and reflect on feedback collected from faculty and students in interviews, focus groups and observations throughout the program. At the end of the session, participants should be able to identify the challenges, issues and best practices for implementing a tablet initiative at this level.

- 1. BYOD/BYOT Implementation Plan for High SchoolMath 1. District BYOD/BYOT policy: The district does not have a BYOD policy. Instead, they have a one-to-one to initiative that discusses all of the policies for the students’ iPads. The information is here https://www.gcbe.org/Page/1860 2. Platform: The district is a one-to-one district and each teacher and student is assigned an iPad. Apple has many different apps that can be utilized in the classroom. Also, google and Microsoft applications can be used as well. All platforms can be used for teachers and students to work together and also communicate. Additionally, Schoology is a platform that students will use to access and post work done in class. 3. Students who don’t have their own device: Students who do not have their own device will still have the opportunity to use a device. Each student in the district is assigned an iPad. The school offers insurance to students who would like to be able to take their iPad home. If the iPad gets damaged, students are able to turn them in to be fixed. Students get to keep the iPad the entire school year so they are able to save their work and project to the iPad. If students leave their iPads at home and need to use a device at school, the library has Chromebooks that can be checked out to be use at school. 4. Grouping students when using technology: Students will be using their devices in various ways in the classroom. Majority of work and technology use will be done individually. Other technology use will be done with partners, in small groups, and also in whole group situations. This all will depend on the type of work or activities that will be done. When students are doing more practice work, they will do this individually. If students are working on projects or reviewing for assessments, then groups and the whole class as a group will be used. 5.
