Implementation for 3rd Grade
English/Language Arts
Rolling Hills Elementary School’s BYOD
Policy (Huntsville City Schools)
Guidelines
• Huntsville City Schools has adopted a Digital 1:1 initiative.
• This initiative provides students in grades 3rd-12th daily access to a laptop.
• At the beginning of each school year, students are issued their own personal laptops that
they will be in possession of for the duration of the school year.
• Once issued, the student is responsible for the laptop at all times.
• Laptops should be brought to school daily.
• Laptops should be used for educational purposes while at school.

Guidelines, Continued….
• Each school is assigned a technology specialist who is a full-time employee.
• As issues arise with student laptops, students are to report them to the technology
specialist.
• Students are responsible for keeping their laptop, charger, and computer case for
the duration of the school year.
• If a student damages his/her laptop, there is supposed to be a fee associated with
the damage. However, in most cases, students are able to have their laptops fixed
and/or receive a loaner while their laptop is being fixed.
• Students who access non-approved sites are subject to disciplinary action.
• Laptops and iPads provided by the teacher are the only source of technology to be
utilized. Students should not have their cell phones out during instruction.
Platform
– 3rd grade students in English/Language Arts and teachers will be utilizing the Google
Classroom Platform
– Google Classroom has many beneficial features to both students and teachers:
*Google Drive that allows for assignment creation, distribution, feedback, and
student revision
*Sharing files
*Schedule creation through Google Calendar
*Available apps for iOS and Android devices
*Access information offline
*View, copy, or edit documents
*Google Forms
Student Groups
– Students will be grouped based on their weekly/bi-weekly pre and post assessment
data.
– Groupings will occur based on current data and standards being taught for each
particular week.
– This grouping method will allow for flexible grouping to occur continuously in the
classroom.
– Students will more than likely not remain in the same group every week as some
students may perform better on certain standards/skills than others.
– Students will work individually on essays and other writing assignments. Before they
publish their writings, they will trade writings for a partner to provide a list of
“glows” and “grows” for them to aid in revising their work.
G Suite for Education
– Google Earth: This app allows students and teachers to take virtual field trips to
any location on the planet without leaving the classroom.

– Google Forms: This app allows for teachers to create quizzes for students to
take. The quiz can also be printed in the form of a PDF for students.

3rd Grade Apps
– Grammar Up: The full version of this app has 1800 questions with 20 topics and the free
version has 10 topics. Students can select the topic and number of questions they want to be
tested on, and it shows them the correct answer. Students receive instant feedback on any
errors made.
– Idioms: This is a topic 3rd graders study. This app can be included during the figurative
language unit. Features of this app include descriptions of common idioms and their
meanings, as well as pictures to correlate with each idiom.
– LAZ Leveled Libraries: This app will be used for differentiated purposes. Since every student is
not reading on the same level, this app allows them to chose books based on their ability
level.
– Vocabology: This app allows students to expand their vocabulary by learning new words with
the “word of the day” feature. Another feature of this app is the read-aloud pronunciation of
a word, while also using it in a sentence.
No device? No problem!
– If a student does not bring their student laptop, they can use a teacher-
provided iPad. The technology specialist can provide an iPad.
– Students may share a laptop with a teacher-permitted partner in order to
ensure that productivity and a level of focus is present.
– If the two previously stated options are not available, students may still
complete their work using materials such as pencil, paper, marker, poster
boards, etc. The appropriateness of the materials will depend on the
assignment.

Rolling Hills Elementary School’s BYOD Policy (Huntsville City Schools) Guidelines • Huntsville City Schools has adopted a Digital 1:1 initiative. • This initiative provides students in grades 3rd-12th daily access to a laptop. • At the beginning of each school year, students are issued their own personal laptops that they will be in possession of for the duration of the school year. • Once issued, the student is responsible for the laptop at all times. • Laptops should be brought to school daily. • Laptops should be used for educational purposes while at school. https://www.huntsvillecityschools.org/schools/sites/default/files/HCS%20Laptop%20Computer%20Use%20Agreement_16_17_V2.pdf

Guidelines, Continued…. • Each school is assigned a technology specialist who is a full-time employee. • As issues arise with student laptops, students are to report them to the technology specialist. • Students are responsible for keeping their laptop, charger, and computer case for the duration of the school year. • If a student damages his/her laptop, there is supposed to be a fee associated with the damage. However, in most cases, students are able to have their laptops fixed and/or receive a loaner while their laptop is being fixed. • Students who access non-approved sites are subject to disciplinary action. • Laptops and iPads provided by the teacher are the only source of technology to be utilized. Students should not have their cell phones out during instruction.

Platform – 3rd grade students in English/Language Arts and teachers will be utilizing the Google Classroom Platform – Google Classroom has many beneficial features to both students and teachers: *Google Drive that allows for assignment creation, distribution, feedback, and student revision *Sharing files *Schedule creation through Google Calendar *Available apps for iOS and Android devices *Access information offline *View, copy, or edit documents *Google Forms

Student Groups – Students will be grouped based on their weekly/bi-weekly pre and post assessment data. – Groupings will occur based on current data and standards being taught for each particular week. – This grouping method will allow for flexible grouping to occur continuously in the classroom. – Students will more than likely not remain in the same group every week as some students may perform better on certain standards/skills than others. – Students will work individually on essays and other writing assignments. Before they publish their writings, they will trade writings for a partner to provide a list of “glows” and “grows” for them to aid in revising their work.

G Suite for Education – Google Earth: This app allows students and teachers to take virtual field trips to any location on the planet without leaving the classroom. https://www.google.com/earth/ – Google Forms: This app allows for teachers to create quizzes for students to take. The quiz can also be printed in the form of a PDF for students. https://www.google.com/forms/about/
  • 7. 3rd Grade Apps – Grammar Up: The full version of this app has 1800 questions with 20 topics and the free version has 10 topics. Students can select the topic and number of questions they want to be tested on, and it shows them the correct answer. Students receive instant feedback on any errors made. – Idioms: This is a topic 3rd graders study. This app can be included during the figurative language unit. Features of this app include descriptions of common idioms and their meanings, as well as pictures to correlate with each idiom. – LAZ Leveled Libraries: This app will be used for differentiated purposes. Since every student is not reading on the same level, this app allows them to chose books based on their ability level. – Vocabology: This app allows students to expand their vocabulary by learning new words with the “word of the day” feature. Another feature of this app is the read-aloud pronunciation of a word, while also using it in a sentence.
  • 8. No device? No problem! – If a student does not bring their student laptop, they can use a teacher- provided iPad. The technology specialist can provide an iPad. – Students may share a laptop with a teacher-permitted partner in order to ensure that productivity and a level of focus is present. – If the two previously stated options are not available, students may still complete their work using materials such as pencil, paper, marker, poster boards, etc. The appropriateness of the materials will depend on the assignment.
