With technology playing such a major role in our everyday lives and changing the ways we learn and interact with one another, it is very
hard to believe that there is still a digital divide. Schools are adopting the technology way of learning and now supplying internet and
various technological devices like laptops, tablets, iPads, and Smartboards for students to use throughout the school year to help them be
successful in the educational setting. It’s not like back in the day where the only thing that was needed to learn was paper, pencil, and a
textbook. These days, those things alone would simply not be enough. While students have access to these things at school, some students
don’t always have access to these things outside of the school setting. This is where the divide comes into place. While the use of
technology allows students to be able to learn outside of the classroom setting, students are not allowed to take these devices home (for a
number of reasons that are understandable), and even if they were able to some students do not have access to the internet at home. While
it would be ideal for each student to be issued a device for the school year, there are some things that you have to take into consideration
like the initial cost to purchase items such as laptops and iPads, price of maintenance, and if students would truly be able to take care of
them for the year. To bridge these gaps there are a number of things that could be done.
1. Teachers could fundraise to obtain their own classroom set of iPads. There are site like Donors Choose and Go Fund Me that
practically allows any and everyone to fundraise for whatever they choose.
2. Teachers could modify lessons and assignments where less technology is being used. By modifying lessons and assignments maybe
internet access will not always be necessary. There are other ways for students to learn information like textbooks and books from your
local library.
3. Computer time and usage could be expanded throughout the day. If there are students that you know do not have access to these things
at home, they could be allowed more time than usual to use them at school.
4. An informational could be held for parents to let them know where they could take their child to be able to use the computer and gain
access to the internet. For example, most libraries communities allows access to their computers.
I don't think that the gap will ever completely be closed due to the fact that not everyone will have access to these things, and not everyone
wants to have access to these things. As a teacher teaching 21st century learners, it is imperative that you do all that you can to assist
students who may not have access to these tools and materials outside of the school setting.

Editorial With technology playing such a major role in our everyday lives and changing the ways we learn and interact with one another, it is very hard to believe that there is still a digital divide. Schools are adopting the technology way of learning and now supplying internet and various technological devices like laptops, tablets, iPads, and Smartboards for students to use throughout the school year to help them be successful in the educational setting. It’s not like back in the day where the only thing that was needed to learn was paper, pencil, and a textbook. These days, those things alone would simply not be enough. While students have access to these things at school, some students don’t always have access to these things outside of the school setting. This is where the divide comes into place. While the use of technology allows students to be able to learn outside of the classroom setting, students are not allowed to take these devices home (for a number of reasons that are understandable), and even if they were able to some students do not have access to the internet at home. While it would be ideal for each student to be issued a device for the school year, there are some things that you have to take into consideration like the initial cost to purchase items such as laptops and iPads, price of maintenance, and if students would truly be able to take care of them for the year. To bridge these gaps there are a number of things that could be done. 1. Teachers could fundraise to obtain their own classroom set of iPads. There are site like Donors Choose and Go Fund Me that practically allows any and everyone to fundraise for whatever they choose. 2. Teachers could modify lessons and assignments where less technology is being used. By modifying lessons and assignments maybe internet access will not always be necessary. There are other ways for students to learn information like textbooks and books from your local library. 3. Computer time and usage could be expanded throughout the day. If there are students that you know do not have access to these things at home, they could be allowed more time than usual to use them at school. 4. An informational could be held for parents to let them know where they could take their child to be able to use the computer and gain access to the internet. For example, most libraries communities allows access to their computers. I don't think that the gap will ever completely be closed due to the fact that not everyone will have access to these things, and not everyone wants to have access to these things. As a teacher teaching 21st century learners, it is imperative that you do all that you can to assist students who may not have access to these tools and materials outside of the school setting.
