This document discusses selecting a research topic and organizing the research process. It emphasizes focusing the topic narrowly, ensuring adequate time and resources are available, and framing the topic as a series of questions. The objective is to have students thoughtfully select a topic they are interested in and can adequately research within the constraints of the assignment. Students should discuss potential topics with their professor or librarian to identify appropriate resources and scope. Organizing the research from the outset through narrowing the topic, assessing time and resources, and questioning what they aim to learn will save students time and improve their results.

Introduction to quantitative and qualitative researchLiz FitzGerald
This presentation, delivered in an Open University CALRG Building Knowledge session, gives a preliminary introduction to both quantitative and qualitative research approaches. There has been widespread debate when considering the relative merits of quantitative and qualitative strategies for research. Positions taken by individual researchers vary considerably, from those who see the two strategies as entirely separate, polar opposites that are based upon alternative views of the world, to those who are happy to mix these strategies within their research projects. We consider the different strengths, weaknesses and suitability of different approaches and draw upon some examples to highlight their use within educational technology.

This presentation was given by Francisco Marmolejo (Tertiary Education Global Coordinator The World Bank) to present the work of group 4 at the international seminar “Opening higher education: what the future might bring” 8-9 december 2016, in Berlin, Germany, jointly organised by OECD Centre for Educational Research and Innovation (CERI) and Laureate International Universities (LIU).
In 2015, PISA asked students about the occupation they expect to be working in when they are 30 years old. Students’ responses were later grouped into science-related and non-science-related careers – with the former including science and engineering professionals; health professionals; science technicians and associate professionals; and information and communication technology (ICT) professionals. Girls and boys are almost equally likely to expect to work in a science-related career.
On average across OECD countries, almost one in four students (24%) reported that they expect to work in an occupation that requires further science training beyond compulsory education. Specifically, 8.6% of students expect to work as professionals who use science and engineering training (e.g. engineer, architect, physicist or astronomer), 11.4% as health professionals (e.g. medical doctor, nurse, veterinarian, physiotherapist), 2.6% as ICT professionals (e.g. software developer, applications programmer), and 1.4% as science-related technicians and associate professionals (e.g. electrical or telecommunications engineering technician).
Global Education and Skills Forum 2017 - Educating Global CitizensEduSkills OECD
Andreas Schleicher - Director for the Directorate of Education and Skills, OECD
Each year the Global Education & Skills Forum brings together world leaders from the public, private and social sectors seeking solutions to achieving education, equity and employment for all.
Higher education policy is the key to lifelong learning and this is particularly important as the ageing population is increasing in many countries. It is a major driver of economic competitiveness in an increasingly knowledge-driven global economy and it also brings social cohesion and well-being. Countries are increasingly aware that higher education institutions need to foster the skills required to sustain a globally competitive research base and improve knowledge dissemination to the benefit of society. Kazakhstan’s higher education system has made progress over the past ten years. However, there is scope for improvement in delivering labour-market relevant skills to Kazakhstanis, and in supporting economic growth through research and innovation.
In examining the higher education system in Kazakhstan, this report builds on a 2007 joint OECD/World Bank review: Reviews of National Policies for Education: Higher Education in Kazakhstan 2007. Each chapter presents an overview of progress made in the past decade across the main areas explored in the 2007 report. These include quality and relevance, access and equity, internationalisation, research and innovation, financing and governance. The report also examines policy responses to evolving dynamics in higher education and the wider socio-economic changes.

Professional Digital Presence for the Librarian Reseachermputerba
Good Day,
Take the survey https://bit.ly/2ZlJvkR
My colleagues Heather Alexander, Dominican College, and Hua Sun, Shandong University of Arts, and I are researching the development of librarians as professionals. Part of this research comes in the shape of a survey found at https://bit.ly/2ZlJvkR. The study looks at one aspect of this research, the promotion of librarians as researchers.
Generally speaking, librarians conduct research as part of their work. Usually, this research involves day to day tasks such as the gathering usage statistics for ILL, databases, and the physical library. These are important within the institution. At other times the information gathered by librarians has practical implications for the profession as a whole and are shared in publications or conference presentations.
As part of our research, we want to know if and with what tools librarians promote their research as professionals. In particular, we are looking at the use of social media to create a professional digital presence.
Please help us in this study by taking the survey at https://bit.ly/2ZlJvkR . The survey takes less than 10 minutes. We are doing this solely for scholarly purposes.
If you would like to review the sites discussed in the survey, please see the presentation at https://bit.ly/2JxSfiR .
Thank you,

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

2. In this lesson we discuss selecting a research
topic and beginning the research process. The
objective is to have you organize your thoughts
in order to make the process easier.
Writing a college research paper is complex.
Approaching the process in a logical manner
makes for an excellent learning experience.
Organizing from the outset saves you time and
increases the quality of results.
3. Thinking It Through
If you have the option of
selecting to choose your own
topic, make it is a subject
that interests you.
Satisfying your curiosity
makes the work much more
enjoyable and you may
already know a great deal
about the topic.
4. Adequate Resources
When selecting your topic you
should ask if there are adequate
resources available to you in
order to develop the topic?
Check with a librarian to see if
the resources you need are
available through the library.
The librarian can help you
locate materials whether in the
library or from other libraries
using interlibrary loan.
5. How soon is the paper due?
Adequate Time
Finding the right materials takes time. Reading
your research takes time. Writing the paper takes
time.
When selecting a topic make sure that you can
manage your time to do the research, acquire
information and the properly compose your
paper.
6. Is your theme too broad or too
narrow?
Finding the right balance between
broad and narrow topic selection
takes thought. This can be difficult.
You might start with one topic and
find there’s not enough time or
resources to explore it properly.
Be flexible enough to broaden or
narrow your research to meet class
deadlines.
7. Broad View
Thinking broadly is great for many
things.
In the process of developing a
research topic this is not the case.
It’s best to be precise about the
subject you want to explore.
9. Test yourself to see what you already know about
the Abraham Lincoln. Create a list of words that
you feel are relevant to your research interest.
Organize.
10. Narrow the Topic
The more you can focus your
thoughts the easier the research
will be.
Look at Lincoln’s speeches. The
topics in Lincoln’s speeches reflect
the history that surrounded him.
Early speeches dealt with topics of
secession, states rights and slavery.
Later speeches had similar subject
matter but they were given during
the Civil War when the nation was
deeply divided.
11. Be Specific.
Focus on one of Lincoln’s speeches.
Your topic can be narrowed down to a
specific speech, the Gettysburg
Address for instance, with its influences
and effects.
Look closely at those influences and
effects.
Look for specific reasons for the
speech.
Look for specific effects the speech
had on individuals or the country.
12. Three Questions
Frame the topic as a series of questions.
1. Why?
2. When?
3. How?
Why did Lincoln give this speech?
When did he give this speech?
How was the speech received?
Your questions can help you in focusing
your search for information.
13. Remember the Audience
Focus your ideas with your
audience in mind (read professor).
Remember that all your research
will be used to build an argument or
defend a position on the topic.
The results of your research should
enforce your ideas. It may, also,
indicate that you need a change of
opinion.
Either way, your ideas about the
research are important!
14. It’s your ideas that mean the
most to your professor.
Your ideas supported by the results
of your research.
15. Ask Questions!
You are writing about this
topic for a reason. It's either
your own interest or
something your professor
feels that you should know.
Focus your thoughts by
determining what you want
to learn from the research.
16. It’s your education,
make the most of it.
Ask yourself, “What do
I want to know about
this topic?”
Your education is all about you.
17. What outcomes do you want from this research?
Yes you want an A+.
However, this is about a
learning experience.
The process of
researching a topic should
change your perspective
about that topic.
18. Next we’ll begin to look at the materials used for academic research.
Answering the question, “What sources are available for your research?”
Do the student activity for this lesson.
After that proceed to the next lesson.
