The many activities of metal ions in biology have stimulated the development of metal based therapeutics. It has been found that biologically active compounds become more effective and bacteriostatic upon chelation with metal ions also the biological activity of many drugs has been shown to be enhanced on complexing with metal ions, hence promoting their use in Pharmacology. The present work deals with the synthesis of metal complexes derived from a novel Schiff base drug synthesized from urea and salicylaldehyde and its physico-chemical analysis to find out ligand- metal ratio of this complex in solution. For the structure elucidation of these complexes “Monovariation method (Mole ratio method/ Yoe-Jones Method)” has been used to ascertain the ligand-metal ratio in the complex. The stability constant of the formed complex was calculated by molar conductance measurement using Modified Job’s method (Method of Continuous Variations). The analysis has been carried out using conductometry. To confirm metal-ligand ratio, conductometric titrations were carried out at room temperature using analytical grade metal salts. Titrations were carried out with “systronics conductivity-meter” using dip type conductivity cell having cell constant 1 at room temperature.

Complex 1 has been structurally analyzed by FTIR and UV spectroscopy, TGA, Powder-XRD and single crystal X-ray diffraction. X-Ray crystallographic studies revealed Zn(II) complex crystallizes in a P21/c space group and exists in a distorted trigonal bipyramidal geometry (τ = 0.68).

Producing metallic hydrogen requires very high pressures, around 4-5 megabars. The author proposes using electron injection to reduce the critical pressure for producing metallic hydrogen. Experiments will study electron localization in solid hydrogen under pressure and aim to produce small amounts of metallic hydrogen to test its properties and metastability. Successful production of metallic hydrogen could enable new rocket and launch vehicle designs with much greater payloads and range.

Biomass is considered as a potential source of energy production.Gasification can be employed to convert dilute biomass energy source in to gaseous products holding concentrated form of energy. A steady state model for fluidized bed biomass gasifier is developed based on reaction kinetics and hydrodynamic aspects of fluidization. The presence of sorbent for absorption of carbon dioxide from the product gas is also incorporated in the model.The developed model predicts the variation of syngas composition, temperature, pressure and velocity along the height of gasifier. Experiments were carried out in a lab scale fluidized bed biomass gasifier and the results were used to validate the model.An increase of 50.35% in H2 mole fraction and a decrease of 50.88 % in CO2 mole fraction were observed when CaO was used as the sorbent.

Selection of prime mover type was investigated for use in combined cooling, heat and power systems. Selection was determined from comparison of performance criteria for economic, energy and emissions savings. Simulations were run for three different types of prime movers in one climate zone and compared to a reference case with a typical separate heating and power system in the same climate zone. A hybrid load following method was implemented, with a suggested improvement. Performance parameters were compared and results indicated emissions and energy savings for all three prime movers. The prime mover types were reciprocating internal combustion engine (ICE), micro-turbine and phosphoric acid fuel cell. The climate zone was chosen to be a cold, humid climate represented by Chicago, IL. Economic savings were seen for both the ICE and micro-turbines. Emissions savings for carbon, nitrogen oxides and methane, for all three types, were greater than 9%, 12%, and 13%, respectively. Primary energy consumption savings for all three were greater than 8%.

A concept of a liquid tin anode-indirect carbon air fuel cell (LTA-ICFC) are described. Experimental setups for analysis of LTA-ICFC polarisations of an operational electrochemical reactor of the LTA-ICFC are presented. Results from Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) Analysis of the electrochemical reactor of the LTA-ICFC are shown and analysed.The rate-determining step of the system is concluded. The charge-transfer resistance did not show considerable differences at 700-800 °C. This can be implied that the charge-transfer resistance is not the rate-limiting step of the transport processes of the fuel cell. The increase of the Warburg impedance concurrently with the resistance to fit mass-transport loss (R3) suggests that the rate-limiting step for the LTA-ICFC in voltage recovery mode is the diffusion of the oxide ions through SnO2 layer. The increment of mass transport lost, R3, of the cell causes the slowly increase of the cell’s voltage over the voltage from 0.7-0.8 V at 700, 750, and 800 °C.
